Welcome to the UA Sports Festival tournament!
This is for the PVP tournament from this signup thread: truepath.boards.net/thread/3510/registration-pvp-battle-tournament-optional?page=2
This will be a four-round direct elimination tournament with 24 participants, including a representative for each foreign school! Given that the numbers would be unbalanced for a regular direct-elimination tournament, a special structure has been put into place.
The top four seeded students in Yuuei will fight the four foreign students in a special bracket, while the remaining 16 will have their own matches as well. The second round will be the special one. The winners of the regular round of 16 will be matched with a winner of the special bracket, resulting in four 1v1v1 matches in the second round! After these high-octane free-for-alls, the winners will then be matched in a semifinal leading to a finale back in a 1v1 format.
A picture speaks a thousand words, they say, so here are your tournament brackets!
(aslo i know this is super ghetto but believe me, i haven't found a single online tournament bracket tool that allows you to do 1v1v1s on the second round xd)
The brackets marked “seed” are the special brackets. OOCly, they have been selected by accounting for their total XP spent in combat abilities. ICly, we will say they were drawn randomly. This was done in order to ensure that the newer students would get at least one relatively fair fight, though we weren’t unfortunately able to seed everyone. We realize this is a bit different than what was advertised, but the only other option was to give the top students a bye for the first round and only have them participate from the second round onwards, but it seemed rather unfair that having spent time and effort to develop a character would be punished with less fights. A group stage would have taken far too long to set up. As such, the compromise that was found was to give them a fight against the NPCs for the first round. Details of the draw process explained in the spoiler. We hope that this arrangement will suit everyone!
Since this is a rather special type of tournament, I couldn’t find anything online that would draw brackets like I wanted it to. Hence, the brackets will be drawn on Discord using dice throws for full transparency.
First off, the four students who were put in the special brackets were Elise, Tetsuko, Rin and Jasmine, as they have the highest XP spent in combat abilities of everyone in the thread as of the 12th/02/2019. The remaining sixteen students will be assigned numbers based on the order in which they posted in the thread. I will draw pairs using a d16 until we have all 8 matches set.
These 8 matches will then be divided into four groups based on the order in which they were drawn: group A will be the first two matches drawn, group B the following two, etc, up until group D which will be the last 2 matches drawn. Then, I will simply roll a d4 to decide in which group each special bracket will be.

The rules and setting haven’t changed, with the exception that we’re now going with 8 turns per fight (8 posts each) with a 48h posting timer, given that the tournament ended up being four rounds instead of five as originally planned. Abilities are locked as what they were on the 12th/02/2019, and will stay like that for all matches; upgrades bought after that won’t be able to be used in the tournament. All pending ability upgrades have been approved. Please find a reminder of the (slightly updated) rules in the spoiler below:
--- IC information ---
ICly speaking, this tournament will be organized as part of the sports festival and be open to any UA student, plus the international students. It will be announced publicly in the media and broadcast internationally; ICly, students can sign up by contacting one of their teachers and informing them of their intention to participate. (OOCly, please fill the sheet below)
The arena will be installed in an empty field in Ground Alpha. The arena itself will be a stone square, 50 by 50 meters. From the bounds of the arena, shimmering walls will be raised by a NPC pro hero's quirk, extending 50 meters up in the sky and closing off the arena in a cube. These walls will be transparent both sides, barely visible, act like solid surfaces you can step on and let air through so you can breathe. Around the arena, bleachers will get erected for the public to sit in. You can expect to see family, pro heroes and perfect strangers watching your matches, and those will have a capacity of about 10 000 seats. The matches will happen in order, from top to bottom.
--- Battle rules ---
First of all, the site rules of course apply. The fight starts from the first post, and the first poster can be either agreed upon or decided by coin throw. Nonetheless, they have 48h to post from the moment the next round is announced.
The tournament threads are NON-DE, and maiming or other forms of long term damage are strictly prohibited. There will be no discussion on this whatsoever: if you want your character to get maimed in a spectacular fashion, then find another thread to do so. ICly speaking, remember this is an internationally broadcast sporting events and that you will be surrounded by teachers and other security officials. If you are about to get hit by crippling damage, assume the fight is going to be stopped and the attack deflected/tanked by one of the teachers. This translates to a loss for the person who had to be protected, but remember -- using crippling attacks on your fellow students on international TV carries IC consequences!
A combat moderator will be assigned to each thread and will be available to intervene in case of a dispute, but we encourage you to try and solve it in a civil manner with the other party first: don't go for the mods the second you see something you don't like. Once given, the mod's ruling goes and must be accepted, and the thread continued.
In order for the tournament to progress, a victor must be determined by the end of the 8th turn. A victory can be achieved by knock-out (loss of consciousness), forfeit (tapping out) or stoppage (intervention by the teachers, the person who needed to be protected loses). In case of a draw (ie double KO or double stoppage) the winner will be drawn randomly by dice throw (which will be done publicly on Discord).
