I see you through the flood See you through the fire See you through the storms-a-raging
❧ There was a short nod from Yoru as Emi replied, as if there was no question about the meeting being held. Oh, if only she knew how many plans have failed before just because the students didn’t have enough time to arrange such gettogethers on their free time. She definitely haven’t experienced that yet. For the start, Emi sounded confident and enthusiastic enough, which was about what Yoru could expect from the short exchange they had in the chat. He glanced toward his best friend, checking if he was paying attention at all.
Yoru was aware that Ryuusei probably saw through him like glass. Both of them knew this meeting had little to no point in reality, that the inevitable first meeting would happen before they start the rescue mission, and that whatever plans of possible team-ups they come up with might be shattered by the environment and the circumstances anyway. Both Ryuu and Yoru were good at improvising and working together from the moment they met. Something like this was unneeded. But seeing the number of student that showed up, these others definitely thought this meeting to be important, and to put their mind to ease, the two of them had to be here too. The rest all depends on how the conversation continues.
Although Yoru knew best not to base his beliefs on first impressions, he was also a quick judge of character. Rather than thoughts, he based himself on feelings, and when someone irked him right from the start, he knew it was better to stay far away, or an inevitable clash will happen. And as good as Emi’s first few sentences were, the rest just pulled her speech down the drain.
The amount of eccentricity and ego emanating from her would be able to hold up the school. Even Yoru wasn’t able to put so much face into a group project when the point was to work together. Hearing her talk about us versus them, about a mixed bag of possible team members being present, Yoru immediately saw the trouble that would follow her, and the reasons why this won’t work. The real problem was, however Yoru looked at it, Emi just made the whole rescue event, and this meeting, about her. Not them, or everyone. Her.
That is not how a team member, not to mention a leader that she apparently wants to be would have to act.
He was ready to retort. He glared at her, orange eyes fierce with retaliation, but to his biggest surprise, Ryuu was faster to voice his thoughts – the thoughts that echoed in his own heart as well. He barely ever saw Ryuusei be this riled up by a simple situation such as this, so it was somewhat new even to him. Still, they had the same opinion, and Yoru was ready to voice his own even when another one, Arisu from their class, came to the meeting’s protection. However, what she said was almost as bad as what Emi started. These two girls were so set on winning in a scenario that had the point of rescuing others that they immediately invoked distrust in Yoru just by talking. Arisu was trying to prove her point with more and more words, going in circles. Even worse, she clearly stated that Ryuu going against them will just prove her point further, and Yoru was unable to watch his best friend be the scapegoat for their martyrdom.
They wanted someone to hate here, right? Oh, he could provide.
“Just to be clear here.” He looked toward Emi, voice raised so everyone would be able to hear him. “You want us all to talk, but what do you have to offer?” He tilted his head to the side, obviously unimpressed. “Y’know, maybe you should start by explaining why we would want to be on your team before you ask anything more. I care little about your abilities.” He pointed a finger toward her, his hand discolored from his healing burns. “But that attitude...” His voice grew lower. “...is what will kill your team in the long run.”
He could only imagine how bad the first impression he made was after all this, but it was already done, so let’s make it worse. Can’t have Ryuu being hated more than Yoru.
His gaze fell to Arisu, who was protecting Emi’s speech, translating it as if they didn’t understand what she meant the first time. The fact there was someone needed to clear it up already was the mark of a bad start. “God, you guys talk way too much. The point is to do this to the best of our abilities, and not to lose track of the whole point of the event by forcing ourselves to be what we are not. If you ask me, I much prefer a mixed bag compared to an egocentric perfectionist. That will at least show everyone you can make the best of a bad situation. Show that you can improvise.”
Yoru already knew what made up a good team, and what made it crumble within moments. What was happening here, even if unintentionally, will lead a team to ruin, and not fame. Trust won’t be built from this meeting, and unless everyone was on equal footing, there will be no fruit born here. It seemed some people already thought they had more rights than the rest.
After all this, hearing Ryuu’s last few sentences was not surprising. He raised an eyebrow toward his best friend, as if asking if he was sure about going home already. But just by seeing his expression, he knew the answer.
“Nah, I’m going too.” Oh, right. If he wanted to redirect the hate from his friend to him, he still needed to say more. “Can’t stay near that ugly pinkie for another moment.” There was a cheeky smirk on his face, but it was directed at the ones in charge as he turned toward the group one last time. “Bottom line is that you don’t want me on your team, I guess.” And with that, he gave a mock salute as they left the meeting-place. Unless someone stopped them with retaliation, they wouldn’t hear Takumi or the rest introducing themselves to the people gathered.

❝You're showing me colours of the sky, But all I see is Grey❞ 635 w. Rescue kenjutsu-f | reinforcement-f | radiant dawn-e Relena crossed her arms and narrowed her eyes at the girl. She could alread tell that she wouldn't get along with Emi, despite her professional grade prowess in journalism.
"So we're here to make you look good." Relena murmured.
She didn't really care if Emi heard her or not. Although she was the catalyst for the meeting, she wasn't the focus. Relena eyed the others who had shown up and was pretty surprised at how many were present. Some of them she had recognized from either combat training or were actual classmates of hers. Though she disliked the fact that she had never truly interacted with them before.
What really pushed her over the edge was what Emi had ended with. A reason to be on her team. How they can make her look better? She would have spoken up, but Ryuusei was saying exactly what she was thinking. Relena was actually quite stunned at the conviction in his speech! So much so that she was nodding with a small smile on her face.
This whole meeting was starting to fall apart though. The newcomer, who introduced himself as Takumi, seemed like he was really trying to keep things upbeat. But didn't have the presence that someone like Emi or Arisu had. This was even getting to the point where both Ryuusei and Yoruhi were getting ready to leave. No, to hell with this. This wasn't how things would turn out.
Relena sprinted to head them off, throwing her arms out wide directly in front of the two boys. Her eyes were sharp and her jaw clenched as she stared at them with as much conviction as she could muster.
"Listen, I won't stop you further if you two wish to leave. But please just hear me out."
Relena eyed Emi from across the room for a moment, but then redirected her attention back to the two guys. "This isn't about winning. Hell, this isn't even about the reputation of UA. This is a rescue operation and even though it is a mock one, we should take it seriously. Because we're heroes. Every. Last. One. Of. Us."
Though she was looking at Ryuusei and Yoruhi, her speech was directed toward everyone present. She didn't want them to fall apart and she didn't want her own emotions get in the way of what mattered most. Becoming a hero.
"Please don't leave, you guys. We all need each other. Don't you see? Emi's methods may have been selfish, but we're all here now. Not to win, but to be there for one another. We don't have to be the best of friends, but we can still talk about what makes us unique and how we can support each other when we go out there. Honestly, I'm scared stiff right now. You think I can go out there alone with all those people watching me? No! But I can do it if you all are there..."
She lowered her arms and stared at the floor for a minute. Her nose scrunched up, trying to fight back the tears that were, for whatever reason, welling up. Pathetic. Why the hell am I crying? She sniffled as she looked back up at the group. Relena held up her hand toward a point of sunlight and the solar energy weaved toward her like a river of light.
"This is my quirk. It's called Radiant Dawn."
The light weaved above her head, twisting and turning in a myriad of shapes from circles to squares and triangles until it spelled out a phrase above her head.
"I don't have two reason to join this team. I only have two words for you, Emi."
Above her, two words were spelled in bright light.
"Plus Ultra. So, what do you says guys? Wanna start again?"

"The other schools? Even if their budget is anywhere near as insane as UA’s, don’t think for a second that they’ve sent anything less than their best students to represent them. We, on the other hand, have...a mixed bag. No restrictions, really.", Chikako stood there, listening, she did not catch every word her ears would not allow her too but she had more then the jist of it and filled in the spots that she had missed. The pressure, was accumulating inside of Chikako's heart. It was not a pleasantry at all, but a bag of butterflies violently trashing her insides and heart. Almost like the first time she was here, at the movie, she was shaking a little uncontrollably. This pressure, this exception to be better then the average Joe shook her.
'I only came here because I am weak, I cannot fight and physically I am weak so I cannot even do the events. I am deaf, I am stupid, I lack common sense, I can hardly communicate, my quirk does not work with me unless I am endanger and even then it does what it wants, I do not know how to fight. I am Useless, I am small, I am not made out for this! I am no hero! WHAT IS MY PURPOSE?!', her head exploded into a pessimistic state as the pressure began to overwhelm her, causing the butterflies in her stomach to churn even faster. Anxiety. Growing Anxiety. Her body shakes more with each second 'Exceptions, expectations of millions? I cannot meet them. I am weird, I DO NOT LIKE THIS', her head was screaming, her hands shook a bit and her book she was holding onto just seconds ago fell to the floor.
"So. One at a time. Your hero name, quirk, two good reasons why I’d want you on my team, and one rescue scenario you’d shine in.", Chikako continued to listen, though she began to breath silently unevenly. 'Worthless, Garbage. My hero name? What is my hero name? Moron? QUIRK? I SUMMON A DEMON GUYS, it doesnt do anything I say at all! a reason you would want me on your team? HEY, at least you know I am a failure! Not like people like me, they hate me. My quirk is why they hate me, i'm dangerous, I am bad. ....A RESCUE SCENARIO I SHINE IN? I do not know! I COULD NOT EVEN PUSH SOMEONE OUT OF THE WAY OF A CAR AND GET HIT INSTEAD, I AM THAT WEAK!', she stood there froze as her head's panic grew and her voice of reasoning left the building. She was so shaken, that she did not even notice that Emi was offering her phone towards Chikako into a goof two seconds after, to which she looked down at the phone.
'My voice sucks, even she knows that. I am weird, strange, different. She offering this because my voice is hard to use, i am no team player because I am incompetent! I will just get hurt, for being different. The kids in middle school told me that. I do not like this. I do not like this. I do not like this. Someone, mother, father, ryu. Someone. Let me disappear. I do not like this.', her thoughts slowly diving into chaos, the semi-reasonable claims she said about herself, and why she was not as good as others, was slowly diving into nonsensical hysteria that was welding into the young frantic girl.
'I doubt even Rimma-Chan likes me, why did I think it would be different, even if it was for a second. I bet she just pities me, because I am so useless. I do not want to lose Rimma-Chan because I am useless...why do I suck! WHY DID I HAVE TO BE SUCH A LOSER. I like her, I realize that now, just another way I am weird. She is not a boy, yet I like her! I can never be normal just a useless idiot! Even Rimma-chan knows I am a loser...what hope did I see me having a normal life....I do not deserve one..', the frozen shaking girl's eyes began to water a little as her mind began to self destruct, what little happiness she was building up and being optimistic about was being destroyed by her inner demons, both metaphorically and actually.
Chikako snapped out of her fantasy, into the real world that was blurred by her growing tears, hearing Ryuu's request to leave this place. Up into then, she was zoned out. Arisu and the other boy's response went over her head and she panicked into the shit storm that she was evolving into. 'It is hopeless, if he wants to go home how can I even be useful. I am lesser, why would I be better then him? because I can draw? slab on make-up? I DON'T PROVIDE ANYTHING. I am just.....I am just dead weight', she said as the tears slide down her cheek and fell onto the screen.
"Im sorry", she typed into the phone and the voice from the found translated into crowd, right after Yoruhi's outburst. "I am sorry, but I am useless. I would not be any use to anyone, I came here because this is the one I would lose the worst in, not because I am actually any good in it. I am different, I am sorry I will drag everyone down', the phone translated into a very neutral tone, not properly showing the anxiety and terror the girl was facing right now, but only one look at her face would show how broken she was. She handed the phone right back to Emi, and went to turn around and pick up her book before she left, but as soon as she did Relena spoke. Something inside the violently shaking girl told her to stay and listen, at leastto the bits and pieces she could hear, that the girl was saying.
She stood there, her eyes almost dead as tears fell down from her own despair, and she listened. Most of it talking to those guys that wanted to leave. Mostly something she cared little for in her panic, but one thing did stand out to her. " Honestly, I'm scared stiff right now. You think I can go out there alone with all those people watching me? No!", she could only think of those words in shock. 'I am not alone?', it was obvious that she was not the only one that was afraid but hearing it and thinking it was two different things in all of it's own entirety. It felt surreal, that she was not alone in her fears; even if it was not entirely for the same reason that she was in her panic but at least a small portion of the reason she was. Chikako raised her skinny and bony arms and wiped her tears into the sleeve as she focused onto the girl whose name was Relena, whom was crying too. 'So I truly am not alone', she thought to herself calming a bit down but still obviously distraught.
"Plus Ultra", she had never heard of these words before, but it seemed almost..inspiring. It was stupid, but that phrase that she never heard before and seemingly had no real meaning behind, seemed like it was the most rightest thing to say. She was not sure if it was more to what she said that might have explained it's meaning before, truly her ears did not bless her with the ability to hear it all, but this feeling of almost hope did help qualm her at least a little. However, she was stuck, she was at the edge of leaving and staying. She stood there staring at Relena as she went into her mind seemingly shaking and silent; just standing there.

There was always one. Emi had learned that lesson from her videos. Somebody always had to go against the flow, shoot down her suggestions. That wasn’t to say that she hated criticism – in fact, constructive comments were the best way for her to improve. It just happened that too much of the criticism the students gave was anything but constructive. More often than not, it was a passionate outburst, or just a contrarian without much thought put into their words, as long as they were against the grain.
The blonde was shaping up to be the former. It wasn’t his words that gave him away, but the shift in body language. From stalking in behind his friend to pacing, raising his voice, trying to hide his face. Had she struck a nerve? Had some tragic backstory led him to decide that he hated knowledge? Or… winning? It wasn’t very clear what part he took issue with – a trait that lined up well with her good old friend, the contrarian. Still, it was no surprise to her that somebody rejected her ideas, and so none showed on her face. She gave Ryuusei the courtesy of eye contact and a focused look, but before she could give her rebuttal, Arisu swooped in to save the day!
Well, first she’d explained her skills and spoke of her worth (something Emi would have to get back to later). Slightly raised eyebrows showed her surprise, but in short order her face settled into a relaxed smile. She’d known that Arisu had thought of the rescue meeting before she’d had a chance to propose it, but to think the girl had it in her to defend the idea in front of near a dozen students? Public speaking was nothing new to Emi, but that didn’t mean she’d forgotten how difficult it was… Which made it all the more impressive that she could do it well, explaining her points and (hopefully) swaying the crowd. She’d have to thank the girl later for the backup.
In the face of that, the boy… just gave up. Maybe she’d been wrong about him – the contrarians always gave up quickly, for their arguments fell apart with the slightest pokes. With some parting comments that made Emi question why he’d turned up in the first place, he turned to leave. That would have been the end of that, if not for Yoruhi. He made no effort to hide his hostility. She could partly respect that, but more importantly, she was thankful for it. Ryuusei had the makings of a point in his words. Not a point that she could agree with, but one that could plant the seeds of doubt in their peers. Yoruhi might have had a point, but it was dragged down by an attack on her character, her ideas and… her face?! She’d been unflappable through most of their comments, but the absolute lie insult earned a brief snigger from her. He’d have to try harder than that to get a real reaction out her; she’d read worse from uTube comments that morning. Still, his efforts had established the protestors as antagonistic, rude and a little bit immature. Emi was no saint, but managing to stay calm in the face of that could only do good things for her image and her proposal.
And so they left, without so much as a word from Emi. She had plenty to say of course, but not to those who had already made up their mind. No, she had to ensure that the rest of them were on board. “Sooo, does anybody else take great offense to my face?” A ghost of a smile remained on her face, only to fade as Chikako spoke- well, typed. Emi wasn’t the best with the subtleties of emotion, but even she could tell that the girl’s ego was somehow even more frail than her body. The girl had problems. Problems Emi wasn’t qualified to fix, and certainly not in the span of one conversation. But that didn’t mean she couldn’t emphasize. It had been years, since she had let her demons catch up with her, but she remembered them all the same. Voices of her own mind’s making telling her she was worthless, unloved, and friendless for good reason.
It was why she had decided nobody and nothing would ever be able to make that claim again. Her phone was offered back to her, but with a shake of her head and the tap of a button, Emi left the phone in her hands. The point of giving her the iFruit was not to speak, but to listen. Takumi, undeterred by the troublemakers’ words, took the stage, and each of his words appeared on the screen. A young lad with the power of heart, whipped cream and a cute smile. His pitch wasn’t exactly making her jump with joy, but speaking out so soon after the boys’ attempted shutdown had to count for something, right? Especially when he had to fight through his nerves to do it. For his efforts, she awarded him a gentle smile. “Thank you Takumi-san, and Arisu-chan too. I didn’t really get your quirk the first time you explained it to me, but now I get why you chose the rescue course. Sounds like you’re all set for a rescue scenario.” And a half-decent leader, if her little speech was any indication. Next, she turned her attention to Takumi. “1-B is my class, by the way, so I guess we’ll be seeing a lot of each other after this anyway. Just try not to stress too much about how ‘strong’ you are. I know I said mixed bag and all, but that’s not going to stop us from nailing this. Power’s not what makes a hero, right?” She offered a sly smirk. “I just hope you’re good at improv. If you’re not, start learning. …Buuuut as much as I’d like to brainstorm, I guess it’s only right that I address that.” Mildly narrowed eyes watched the space where the dissidents had once stood.
She gave herself a second to get her words in order, which was seemingly just enough time for another student to interrupt. Relena was, for whatever reason, hopeful that the boys would stay. For some reason, she was to blame for that. The girl’s glare was met with a raised eyebrow, but she let the girl say her piece anyway. And… cry. Had UA always had so many unstable emotional students? She managed to keep a straight face, but she couldn’t help but worry. If a few words were enough to make two students break down and bring another to anger, how were they going to handle a crisis?
No. There was no time for her to think negatively – not that it would help matters anyway. What they needed was some motivation, and on that front, she could provide.
Words above the girl’s head. Words she recognised apart from each other, but together… Her eyes showed a hint of confusion. Maybe the girl didn’t have the best grasp of English. “I’m not sure what you’re trying to say with that, and I especially don’t know why you’re directing it at me. I don’t understand why you’re looking at me like I’m the bad guy, and I can’t say I get you calling me selfish either. If I was only looking out for myself, I would have messaged each of you in private to learn what you’re up to. Instead, I reached out to ask you all to come here, so we could talk together. So everybody could learn about each other. So we could improve our odds. Because yeah, I want to win. Winning means being the best rescue team on the field. I guess you can call me selfish for it, but who wouldn’t want to aim for that? But if I’m not going to, I want to see that spot go to somebody here that wants to do better.”
She focused her gaze on Chikako. “And I already know you want to do better. Not from anything you’ve said, but because you’re here. In UA. On the rescue course. Standing with me now.” A pair of fingers gestured towards the group, waiting to see if any of them could argue with that. “As far as I’m concerned, that’s all any of us need right now. I know that’s what I’m here to do.”
She narrowed her eyes for a moment. For all the bravado she put out, she had ventured into unfamiliar territory. “…Sorry. I’m not too great at motivating other people with nice words, and it might show. My point is…” Another pause, mostly spent filtering out blunt words best used on herself.
“I didn’t force anybody to come here, and I’m not going to beg anybody to stay. That would defeat the purpose of this. So if you think this counts as cheating, or you’re too proud to be here, whatever. Good luck to you. But to the rest of you… I think if you’ve come this far, you owe it to yourself to do what it takes to do better. Things are always going to get in the way of that. Actual roadblocks, other students, your own head, but we’d make for pretty shitty heroes if we didn’t at least try to get through them. So… get through them. Not to plug myself, but… you’ve got to stay super.” A signature sign off for the vlogger, though she felt that her speech was lacking. She’d already told them that it wasn’t her specialty; somebody else would have to speak up and do the job.

--- arisu --- - - - It was pretty rapidly clear that Arisu had managed to do little for Ryuusei beyond upsetting him somehow. He handled it well, keeping a grasp on whatever aspect of his temper had burst to life at some angle or another that Arisu touched on, and reining it all in to little more outward response than a sad smile, a short reponse, and an open claim that he wasn't suited to this stuff at all. Confusing, to be sure, but he didn't seem willing to open up about it at all. In fact, the only thing he seemed to have time to do was to check in with his friend before bailing.
Takumi- from Emi's class, as it turned out- introduced himself and started attempting to disarm the general air of conflict with a display of sincerity and vulnerability. He shared his concerns about his own lack of experience, and his own quirk- he earned himself a fervent thumbs up when he mentioned it was good for extinguishing fires, lest he think she worried he was cramping her style. For a moment, the change of pace was relieving, and she shared a smile with Takumi to show his openness was appreciated, valuable.
But then Ryuu's buddy opened up.
He focused on Emi. Attacked her, attacked her attitude, attacked their attempts to defuse Ryuu's complaints, and threw out a circuitous chain of ideas that circled around the fact that to -do- the best they could, to -perform- at the best of their abilities, it was important that they understand what those abilities were, and the best times to use them. It was- confusing. She got the vibe that he was trying to support Ryuusei in all this, but doing it by going on the offensive was deeply puzzling.
Relena did her best to interfere, as well, opening up about how scared she was and breaking down into tears as she tried to use her quirk to inspire the two boys to stay. On her heels, Chikako responded with an even more expressive bout of self doubt and misery, attempting to opt out entirely because she thought she was somehow uniquely terrified.
Emi followed up afterwards, but she gave the boys a long opening to leave before she started- if Relena didn't get through to them, they'd be long gone before Emi started her part. She addressed being called selfish, addressed the parallel between "winning" and "rescuing everyone as best we can." Addressed the worries of those fearing themselves inadequate. Which, honestly, was deeply relieving- Arisu was far less vocal about her demons than the others, but she was painfully aware of how much of a neophyte she was, how little experience she was bringing to bear, and this took a bit of the weight off her shoulders.
Emi had said pretty much everything she had in mind, so all Arisu added was, "I think all of us showed up with some measure of doubt about how well we'd really be able to do. I sure haven't done anything like this before. But Emi's got the right of it. This might be a themed sports competition, but that also means that doing wonderfully means that we're doing our absolute best to get the victims out of these disaster areas in the right way for them, for ourselves, and for the heroes that have to walk on the laws and paths we pave after us. We're the first wave- we need to do it right so there'll be a second, once we're out there for real, and this is an amazing chance to see what we can do when things go south without anyone's actual lives being on the line."
"And I for one am super excited to be working with you guys- scared stiff or not."
It wasn't quite as open or forward as the other girls had done, but the idea of airing her own insecurities in front of the others was far, far more frightening than swallowing them and doing everything she could to keep everyone else bouyant and encouraged. She felt she'd be more useful by being confident in their collective capacity than she would be if she simply added her own fears and doubts to those already aired.

As time passed, more and more of the participants in the rescue course gathered. He recognized one of them- His diminutive classmate, Momoko. The rest- Well, he had seen them in the halls, but unfortunately had never had the chance to get to know them. But that just meant that this was his chance! "Nice to meet you, Yamada-san." he would tell the first of the new arrivals. "Oh, Mozuku-san, you signed up for rescue as well?" Although, really, he had to admit his surprise that she was the only one from support studies who he saw. Well, surely, it was just that not everyone was there- He knew for a fact that Chise had signed up!
With that in mind, he shot his girlfriend a text. Whether she showed up or not- Well, he would be happy to fill her in on what happened if she couldn't make it! Alas, he swiftly recieved a reply- She couldn't make it. Such misfortune. "Sorry, Chise won't be able to make it." Haruto informed the group. "I'll have to fill her in later."
However, while he might not recognize them, at least one recognized him. "It is very nice to meet you as well..." Although, as she hadn't quite introduced herself, he still didn't know who Arisu was. A friend of Hye-rin and Farrah was a friend of his, though.
Meanwhile, people continued to arrive. A girl who spoke by writing in a notebook- That was odd. But since it was because she was mostly deaf, Haruto could understand. Just that it was rather inconvenient to do all that for a simple greeting, so all he could do was give a nod of acknowledgement. Maybe he should look into learning sign language- Well, that was for another time. Though, he also felt it meant someone would need to scribe for her as they discussed or else she would be totally lost. Well, Haruto would be happy to do that if it came to it.
Another few people arrived- Each giving their standard introduction. It was a good mix of people from each class, and with nothing particularly unusual happening, Haruto would continue to greet each of them individually, as was only polite. Some, of course, seemed more enthusiastic than others- As to be expected, considering they had pretty much all come in blind. It was better than not coming at all- Though he was sure that, like Chise, everyone else had their reasons, and so he could not blame them for their choices.
Finally, Emi spoke up to explain why she had called all of them out here. To mixed reactions- Some people simply did as she said and introduced themselves and their quirk. Others... Took offense at her language and began to argue. Haruto couldn't exactly blame them. She had, after all, been less than tactful in her words. It would be inevitable that personalities would clash. Haruto sighed and stepped between the two parties.
"Alright, everybody, please take a step back. We're supposed to be building teamwork, so let's not start off at each other's throats, alright? Yoruhi-san, please let me speak my piece before you leave." Whether the boy would listen to him or not was another story, but Haruto wasn't going to force him to stay if he didn't want to. To do so would only foster hard feelings, and completely defeat the purpose of doing so. "Emi, your heart is in the right place... I think... But you're going about it wrong. Teamwork is about trust and goodwill- And honestly, I don't think anybody likes being told off the bat that they are, ahem, a mixed bag, and to win we need to listen to someone else who we don't even know. Whether you meant it that way or not, I hope that you can understand why your words were problematic."
The white haired boy would then to the other two- Or one, if Yoruhi ignored his plea to wait. "That said, Emi isn't completely wrong. I can call maybe three of the people who signed up for this event as more than acquaintances. This sports festival is about teamwork, in the end- She's not wrong that it's a good idea to get a general understanding of the people we might be teamed up with before it starts, even if it's too late for any serious practice. It's okay to not like Emi's attitude, but that's exactly why we should work this out before the event starts instead of after."
Whether his words would have any effect, he didn't know- He just hoped that it could defuse the tensions slightly, and help things come to a cleaner conclusion. With that said, he directed his words towards everyone else who had gathered. "Now, personally, I have to lean more towards Igarashi-san's words, although perhaps not so bluntly. The cavalry battle, is a competition. The obstacle course, competition. The tournaments? Obviously a competition. But the rescue course? Saving people isn't a competition, and never should be. Because the second you turn it into one, is when you start taking risks in order to move faster. And in a real rescue scenario, that is the worst thing you can possibly do."
The boy spoke from the heart, drawing on his memories. Kunshu's circus. Semper Fi. QED. Rescue operations. He knew firsthand what it meant to rush in without thinking- Had been guilty of it more than once. This wasn't about competing, this was about saving lives.
"We don't have to win. As I said, rescue isn't a competition. Let our classmates show off how strong UA students are. Our job is to show that UA students have the hearts and minds of heroes- Which means working together to save lives. Not because it makes us look good, but because it's the right thing to do."
He'd accidentally ended up saying more than he intended to. Fortunately, soon after, Relena followed up by suggesting they start again. Haruto took a step back, and waited his turn.
Right. So, as I said before, my name is SHimizu Haruto, and I am the vice president of Support Studies as well as the Cooking Club president. My quirk is Purification, which allows me to draw in harmful substances, like poisons, smoke, smog- Even bacteria. This in turn feeds my quirk, which- Well, it'll be easier to show you." Fortunately, Haruto no longer needed a bottle of poison for this next part of his demonstration. Black blood multiplied in his veins, seeping out his pores to form a slick black glove on his right hand. "Well, I can manipulate this stuff as needed, and while I can't move it very far from myself, it possesses a surprising amount of strength. Anyways, besides my quirk, I have some training in first aid- Not as much as I'd like, I'm afraid, but a passable level."
He considered bringing up Chise's abilities, but upon further consideration... He realized he didn't know that much about what she could do, outside of her quirk. And, explaining that... Well, it just felt too awkward! So he decided to let it slide unless someone asked him.
In conclusion, Plus Ultra?" Haruto added the words Relena and Chikako had used, though he didn't have the foggiest clue what they meant.

Post by Takumi Fujimoto on Feb 9, 2019 23:33:30 GMT -4
Even though it seemed that most of the students present didn't want this meeting to fall apart or turn towards a more socially hostile environment, it seemed that somethings proved more difficult to save. Strangely enough, saving the possibly budding friendships and foundations of teamwork between everyone here might actually be seen as their first rescue attempt, even if it was an internal conflict and no lives were actually in jeopardy. Luckily there was nothing about the way that Ryuusei or Yoruhi spoke or acted that suggested any possibility of their disagreements escalating to a more physically violent expression of anger, which was probably the most comforting thing that Takumi could cling to in that moment. The biggest thing for him was that he actually couldn't find a villain in this disagreement, and it became very easy for him to empathize with the perspectives of anybody whom felt it fit to voice them.
In reality, Takumi could see the reasoning behind Emi's initial call for a meeting and while he somewhat disagreed with the mindset she held towards winning, he still saw some validity behind it. In his mind, Takumi likened it to someone that wanted to become a hero for more selfish reasons such as becoming famous; even if someone was only saving people and stopping crime for their own selfish benefit, that didn't mean that any lives saved were suddenly less important or that the good deed itself was no longer a good deed worth doing. Maybe it was a more altruistic side of the Machiavellian coin, but saved lives were saved lives and any driving force behind that point couldn't just be discarded because of an internal desire for something like ethical purity.
On the other hand, while the concerns of Ryuusei and Yoruhi were voiced in a way that Takumi felt not at all conducive to building towards the goal of the group being able to effectively save more people, their points had just as much validity. If Emi was going to take the initiative and act as a de facto leader for the ragtag "mixed bag" of rescue heroes, she needed to understand that her own bluntness wasn't necessarily the best way to motivate everyone. Obviously there would always be an amount of individual responsibility to be held accountable to for everyone here today, but in order to take the reigns as a leader Takumi felt that the first step made towards building the bridges between everyone needed to be made by that leader. Maybe Emi felt the same way and she saw her call to have everyone explain their personal strengths, quirks, and the advantages their presence gave her, but ultimately it was something done extremely poorly even if with the best intentions. Takumi couldn't hold any of it against her either, just like he couldn't hold the reactions of Ryuusei or Yoruhi against them, because in her own words, they were all here to do better. If leadership was something that she wanted to pursue, then this would be the place for her to learn and improve in that skill as much as any other needed to be a hero.
Once things were really hitting the fan, Takumi stepped up and tried to use his "turn" in the speaking order as a means to bring the atmosphere of this meeting back to something more comfortable. By trying to pull away from the argument and bring the focus back to him and to the focus of actually moving forward, maybe any other lack of social comfort might begin to fade away as well. Feeling his heart race and his skin clam up a bit, made even worse by the butterflies in his stomach and heating up of his face, Takumi tried his best to provide a shameful self plug of himself like a commodity for the team. He explained his quirk as best he could, fighting through the awkwardness of public speaking and the raw discomfort built up in his mind from the argument, talking about how he probably wouldn't be the most useful teammate as an individual but at least he might be able to help when it came to putting out small fires.
As he talked about his foam quirk and mentioned the bit about extinguishing fires, Takumi noticed the cute black haired girl that seemed to be acting like a second-in-command to Emi give him an enthusiastic thumbs up. Arisu offering a gesture of reinforced confidence in him really helped Takumi calm down more as he spoke, the butterflies swarming in his stomach becoming much more docile after the bright and friendly smile she offered him.
When Takumi finished saying his piece, Emi took a momentary command of the platform again to express her thanks. She admitted to not fully understanding Arisu's quirk at first but then mentioned feeling reassured of the rescue ability before turning to Takumi. At his mention of being a new student in 1-B, Emi told him that they were technically classmates and would be seeing a lot more of each other after the Sports Festival, in class. She also tried to console Takumi's worry about not being strong enough for this type of situation, mentioning that power wasn't what made a hero. The bubblegum-color haired vlogger finished her words of comfort by making a small quip about hopefully being good at improvising, prompting another small chuckle from Takumi.
I mean, I would say that I am... I play a lot of Jazz and that's mostly improv... at least when I play... Takumi awkwardly scratched the back of his head again as he trailed off the end of his talk about knowing how to improvise through a smile. He knew that being able to play a few notes in the right key off the top of his head had virtually nothing in common with being able to react and adapt to dangerous and changing situations where lives were in danger, but he felt that still trying to keep things light hearted in the way that he spoke, while also moving away from the self deprecation would probably be best. He had no problems when it came to honestly admitting his faults or where he might be lacking as a teammate, but given the tension that still permeated the air it was probably best to not go too dark with the humor and make a small lack of self confidence appear like an outright self-defeating perspective.
Emi switched gears back towards the conflict that was still ongoing within the group, turning her head back towards the two boys along with another girl, Relena, whom had taken it upon herself to try and convince them to stay. It seemed that her own perspective and feelings had aligned more closely with those of Ryuusei and Yoruhi, but the conclusion that her feelings and led to was to stay and work past the poor first impressions and stressed interaction. She cared more about the idea of only focusing on the moral goal of saving people and shied away from the competitive aspect of the event, which Takumi could still understand even though he could also see why a competitive mindset was still applicable to the test that they would all be taking together. The tears that Relena was fighting against tugged at Takumi's nerves, pulling him slightly away from the warmth and comfort that he was temporarily granted by Arisu's friendly gesture or Emi's reassuring words to him. Wanting to reach out and try to comfort her, Takumi was able to end up finding himself feeling a little better again when she voiced her intention to work hard, or "Plus Ultra" as was Yuuei's motto, as well as a hope to start over with the likely hope of building better relations between them all.
When Emi spoke to address the lingering conflict, she went back into a more confrontational rhetoric that had Takumi on the verge of breaking into a cold sweat. She was speaking very defensively and seemed offended by the way the three students appeared to be viewing things, and even if feeling the need to defend herself was understandable Takumi still worried that this type of talk was still doing more harm than good. Luckily, the speech turned away from confrontation and more towards her reasoning behind the competitive mindset with this event and her hopes for working hard and improvement. Then, in a move that filled Takumi with plenty of hope for the rest of this meeting along with the actual event to come, Emi changed her rhetoric to something with a more cooperative tone and one of looking to find relatable similarities. Rather than questioning the intentions or motivation of those speaking against her, she said that they all clearly wanted to improve and do their best, and even went so far as to apologize for not being the best at motivating or choosing the nicest words to express herself.
In a move to voice ideas that Takumi had swirling in his mind throughout this whole ordeal, a mild mannered white haired boy also took the opportunity to speak up and try to ease tensions between everyone. Just like Takumi found himself thinking introspectively, this boy Haruto did his best to find common ground between his own perspective and the seemingly opposed perspectives of those in conflict. He expressed his desire to look at rescuing people as something to do without the ideas of beating other teams and focusing more on altruism, but also explained how, because of the nature of this event and the way it was being run, that keeping a competitive mentality could be helpful in helping everyone achieve the best results and ultimately save more hypothetical lives, within reason. Afterwards he identified himself and his positions as the Support Studies vice president and the Cooking Club president, going on to explain his quirk. It was really interesting to say the least, and the nature of his quirk along with his personality made his enrollment in the Support Studies course make a ton of sense.
Once everyone seemed to be done speaking for a moment, Takumi wanted to brave the storm of public speaking once more and hopefully add more to Haruto's efforts to keep the energy between everyone in a friendlier aura. So yeah, I'm super excited to work alongside everyone here, too, and while my quirk isn't anything special I still promise that I'll try my best. Both in what I can physically do and in terms of working as part of a team. I'll be honest that the idea of 'winning' isn't the most important thing on my mind, so much as just doing the best job that I can. I have no real experience with this stuff and I'm really hoping that even if I completely fall flat, I can still learn a lot from everything even my failures. That's what this school is about, anyway, right? The teachers will see how we fail and help us work beyond that and become heroes capable of saving people? Either way, I promise to do my best for everyone!
Takumi would try to keep looking between anybody that was still sticking around, offering a hopeful smile to anybody he met eyes with. As long as everyone could work beyond the argument and find some way to get along or at least act cordially, it would be easy for Takumi to feel calm and at ease.

"What's up, my game guys and gals?! My precious buddies! My favorite pals!" Farrah called out from around the side of a nearby hero-wear prototype exhibition stand. Her cheerful, oblivious optimism was projected loudly enough to be hard to ignore; it was not inspiring like Arisu's pep talk and was so ill-fitting the mood set by those seriously considering both the event and their hero careers in general that it was sure to ruffle feathers. She made her way quickly to Arisu, who was wearing the same uniform that she was. Besides the cheerleading uniform, Farrah carried a black scarf and over-coat, draped over one arm and fluttering like a fancy cape as she twirled towards her friends, raising her skirt almost to the point of impropriety as she spun.
She stopped and clapped, holding both hands into the air like a cheerleader posing... before getting the vague sense that this was not the usual UA gathering. She'd been to a lot of class and team meetings by now. So far, she had generally always acted the same way, with varying degrees of success: gauge the mood and the severity of people's expressions, pour on the old Di Prima charm, and watch as the smiles infected everyone else. If she could get everyone in this gathering to smile, however, it would be evidence of skill bordering on quirk ability to rally a team.
Unfortunately, rallying a team wasn't Farrah's goal right now; general gabbing was. "I spot Momo, and our Support Studies VP! And there's a hundred and fifty or more to see!" she cheered, spreading her arms and facing toward the others. Somewhere, the organizer of the whole pre-mission meetup was mixed in, but she was having trouble picking them out specifically. "I'm Farrah di Prima! But also your friend! I'm your companion to this competition's end! As for victory, there's many reasons we should try and take one, but I'm sure you've all realized the important main one! It's not fame or glory, nor even school spirit! To say the stakes are real is closer near it! We all want to be heroes, a title that's earned, but more important here is the lesson learn-"
Farrah quieted down slowly as she realized she was getting looks saying that all this talk of what's important and so forth was pretty played out by this point. She adjusted her shades, smiled as though she was at a natural pause in her speech, then patted one hand onto Arisu's shoulder. "I have stepped in so fashionably late, I've probably only repeated what you said right out the gate?" she asked, remaining composed but speaking somewhat more softly.
----------------------------
WC 448
Summary: Farrah joins Arisu. She introduces herself and starts to give a speech... before realizing that it's already been done. She concedes the floor back to Arisu.

Post by Emi Ryoko Tachibana on Feb 14, 2019 18:48:31 GMT -4
She almost felt bad for the few that spoke up. Emi had learned that hard way that she could never please anybody. Nobody could. Create the cure for cancer and people would condemn it for smelling funny. Organise a gathering for students to learn about each other and some would whine about her choice or words. Or something. She wasn’t entirely sure that she understood the problem, but she also didn’t care enough to see the viewpoint of somebody that could lie to her face so blatantly. She was beautiful, and they all knew it.
But the others? Hopelessly optimistic, pleading with self-made outcasts to try again. She supposed they would learn the hard way, when the boys threw their offerings back in their faces. At least (almost) everybody else stayed optimistic, or at least didn’t feel the need to storm off. That meant they had something to work with. Arisu, was still surprisingly well-spoken, Haruto was trying his best to be a diplomat (and showing off some new quirky tricks) and Takumi was doing pretty well for the new kid forced to watch a tense situation. She gave each of them the floor, listening with a half-lidded gaze. Her one-time rescue partner might have had a point about her tact… Or lack thereof. Nobody could deny that they probably varied wildly in skill level, but was it rude to say it out loud? Probably. Had somebody taken it to heart? Apparently so, if Haruto had quoted that part, and that part alone. She couldn’t think of many leaders that could get away with insulting their subjects on the first meeting… Except the dictators, and she wasn’t nearly strong enough to get away with that. Fine, she thought, with all the enthusiasm of a child denied her sweets. She could play their game.
“Important distinction. I never said this was a competition. I said I want to win. Don’t have to, but I want to.” The makings of a smirk appeared. “But that’s fine. I’m not here to convince you all to see things my way, and there’d be no point in doing that anyway. You don’t have to agree with me to know that in a rescue scenario, knowledge can be just as powerful as a quirk.” She stopped herself short of giving her own spin on what their challenge meant. “I’d say that’s as good a reason to listen as any, but hey, everybody’s different.” Or inexperienced, but she remembered to hold her tongue before she offended anybody else.
The girl paused. Being blunt came naturally to her. Sugar-coating her words? Not so much. There was a reason why her work was mostly pre-recorded videos, where she could script and edit her words. “Mixed bag, mixed bag… You know I was talking about myself too, right?” She raised an eyebrow. “Most of you already know I haven’t been at this school long. Playing catch-up is tiring, and I’m not even sure I’m doing it right. Can’t let that stop me, though! So you guys shouldn’t either. Besides, there’s way more to rescuing than flexing some muscles. Or quirks.” Ugh. She couldn’t tell if she was being inspiring or rambling; she’d have to leave the former to the chattier students. “I’m not going to repeat the ‘do your best’ spiel, but er… do that. Not for me, for yourselves. That’s what I’ll be doi-“ Her voice trailed off as another student arrived. A cheerleader that may have injected liquid spirit into their veins, judging by her speech pattern. And her posture. And her outfit. Hell, if not for her uniform, Emi would have confused her for one of their foreign visitors. Clarification didn’t stop her from looking at the girl as if she was an alien (in more ways than one) as she gave her poetic speech. It would have been impressive if it wasn’t so bizarre.
“…Er. Okay. Nice to meet you…?” A fake cough helped her to get her thoughts in order. “I’m Emi, but you probably knew that already. I should also probably get around to answering my own question now. I’d always meant to, but I wanted to make sure you didn’t all walk out on me first.” She jabbed a thumb against her chest. Hopefully by that point, Ryuusei and Yoruhi has decided whether they were going. If they hadn’t, she’d pause for them to decide, for she had no interest in giving away information for free.
“My hero name is Halo, and not just for the imagery. There’s a Greek term, halokinesis, that means ‘to move salt’. That’s pretty much what I do.” Since everybody else was giving demonstrations, it only made sense for her to stretch her arm out. Her open palm faced the group as she channelled her quirk, forming a levitating construct in front of it. A chaotic collection of conjoined crystalline cubes, better known as oversized, unrefined salt crystals.
“In layman’s terms, I make and mould pure sodium chloride. Need a shield from debris, or a pillar to hold a car up, or a platform to carry a civilian on? I’m your girl. I don’t know many students that can safely get an injured civilian out of a second floor window, but I’m pretty sure I’ve got a strategy for that. So versatility is at least one reason to call for me, and initiative is another. After all, you’re all here because I set this up. My best rescue scenario would be the ocean. I can do a lot more with my quirk there than most, so if you see any of that around, just let me know!” She finished with a wink, as if she needed any more ways to confirm her confidence. Fortunately, talking about herself was much easier than being nice.

I see you through the flood See you through the fire See you through the storms-a-raging
❧ Surprisingly enough, Ryuusei and Yoru weren’t the only ones seemingly unsatisfied with the way Emi started the whole meeting, but they certainly were the loudest and most hard-headed about it. He was ready to turn and head off, leaving this gathering behind with a heavy heart but a stubbornly set mind already when a blondie – one of their classmates, as he noticed – stood in their way.
Relena was as firm as a ray of light beaming through the trees as she stood in from of them. Despite the desperation she stood with, they could have brushed her off easily, ignored her to walk past, but Yoru halted, and he could expect Ryuusei doing the same. They were stubborn, no-nonsense guys, but compassion was rooted deeply. Relena wasn’t budging, and by voicing her own concerns, nearly echoing his own, she still decided to stay and sit through the meeting for the bigger good. For a few moments, Yoru had to wonder if it would be best for the bigger good if he just walked off and left the team behind, but she made it more obvious which was best. She pretty much made the decision for him.
Yoru wasn’t a cold-hearted bastard, despite trying to act just like one. Quite the opposite, actually, and Relena’s open display of emotions already melted his scowl away. Standing with his back toward the others, no one else must have noticed except the two standing near him. With a slight huff and a hand on his hips, Yoru reached out to pat Relena’s head soothingly not long after her tears started to fall. He expected a retort, or his hand to be showed away, but if he had a chance, he would ruffle her hair to calm her. She would receive a teasing grin either way though. Even the white haired boy, Haruto, as he learned, plead for them to stay and at least listen to him before deciding what to do.
“Sure. We can stay.” He barely noticed he talked in his best friend’s name too when saying that, but by this time, it almost became a habit. He turned back just a bit toward the team members, only sideways, as if he was still debating it was worth to stay at all. With Takumi introducing his quirk so obediently, he imagined him to be one of those that liked to avoid conflict, and tried his best to sooth any discord happening on a gathering. Like right now. Relena’s show of her quirk was exactly how he envisioned her – a ray of light. The most surprising for him was, however, the little girl holding the phone Emi gave her, suddenly breaking down. Yoru had seen something like that before, when someone had just too much, when they couldn’t take life anymore... There were more problems going on with the rescue participants than just Emi lacking tact and saying things in a twisted way. Even if some people tried to make the situation better by doing what they were told and sharing their abilities, it was still chaos.
He turned his head to Ryuusei, hopefully still standing near him to witness all that was happening. Humming slightly to get his attention, he bumped his shoulder to his best friend’s and for a few moments, just leaned against him. “Hey, let’s stay a bit more. No need to indulge them just... stay?” His voice was quiet, intended to only be heard by Ryuusei, and agreed upon.
To say that Yoru was clumsy at comforting others was an understatement, but losing hope, especially in such a dramatic way as Chikako did kicked his survival instinct into motion. And right now, it meant that no one should leave who gathered here. It was a roundabout way, but he felt it was better for everyone to stay instead of letting anyone run off and be alone. He barely understood it, but just remembering how the gang worked so many years before, he knew that letting anyone go in a bad mood would mark not only the one person, but everyone else.
If only Emi would just shut up. Then again, she at least tried to address everyone present, even offered some words for Chikako to calm her, but still. He had a feeling her voice will just annoy him by default from now on, and it had everything to do with the words uttered by her. Despite that, he just stood there, watching the others introduce themselves and also paying close attention to Ryuusei’s mood. He was ready to pull the other back by the collar of his shirt if necessary.
Compared to his previous hostile outburst, one would find it weird how tame Yoru appeared right about now, as people opened up more. No one needed to see the reason, really. No one needed to know he was more observant than he seemed. Everyone wanted to motivate others, and the sheer amount of talking was already grating Yoru’s nerves. He folded his arms in front of his chest, tapped his heel on the ground, as if his legs were itching for action, itching to run and jump around. He stayed quiet, because keeping up with the conversation now would just make it all that much LONGER. That didn’t mean people were spared of his responses. Emi received a roll of his eyes when she mentioned that she still intended to win, and wouldn’t want to force anyone to stay. Arisu got a shrug in answer to her admitting she was excited to work with every one of them in the rescue event. When Haruto was addressing them, Yoru scratched the back of his head, looking to the side. Emi’s attitude wasn’t the only problem here. She was just the face of the meeting, the person that received most of his hostility for talking the way she did. He could see why Haruto told the things he did, and he also noticed the incredibly diplomatic way he was going about it. The polite and objective words were much better presented than the bluntness of the others up until now. Nearly so well that Yoru was ashamed. Only nearly though. He had nothing to be ashamed of. Seeing Haruto’s quirk as well, it was obvious who the number one medic will be among the few gathered. Takumi’s last few words only received a nod, as if approving the way he said he wanted to do his best.
The new arrival made Yoru’s eyes widen comically. He had never seen this person before, but the rhymes she brought with her and her overall appearance was such a stark contrast to the current mood of the meeting that he couldn’t help but snort, hiding a smile behind a fist, refusing to let it show. It didn’t make things better, but it all certainly turned… weird.
“By saying that you want to win, you already made it into a competition, you know.” Yoru shut his mouth so fast his teeth clanged together after he noticed he actually spoke up and addressed Emi again. He understood little of where she stood by this point, but he could at least see where the rest of them were when it came to the rescue event itself. Just like how she could see “mixed bag” was a poor choice of words, Emi seemed to have mellowed down after the few inputs that were given in exchange. Still, her voice... ugh.
When even their organizer revealed her quirk and abilities to them, Yoru opened up his mouth to talk, only to shut it with the same motion. Oh right. He already told them no one would want him on their team, so there was no point in telling them his abilities now. There were two people who would make literally awesome firefighters among them, Arisu and Takumi specifically, so he was already the redundant piece here. That just meant he will have to fill up any role that is open on the team. That was a little bit concerning, but since his quirk wasn’t at all fit for rescuing, he figured he will just have to do any of the dirty work the rest of his teammates would not want to do. It was obvious by this point that unless specifically asked, he will just do his best to stay quiet.

Dreams breathe life into men. The stars... I'll reach them.
Thank the heavens for Yoruhi wanting to leave alongside Ryuusei. In reality, the blonde Vice-President of Class 1-A was taken aback by how his best friend chose to handle the situation. However, at the same time, it didn't surprise him at all. Their relationship was one of harmony and of filling the voids that each other had, both for good and for worse: if Ryuusei was ice, then Yoru was fire; if Ryuusei was reason, Yoruhi was emotion. But, at the same time, they could also invert roles when needed, shifting the balance of their inherent characteristics while maintaing their perfect compatibility: sometimes Ryuusei was thunder, and so Yoru had to adopt the position of the lightining rod. At the end of the day, it really didn't matter how they thought of Yoru after his angry words, a result of the messy-haired teen trying to save his best friend from being the focus of the group's hatred - something that not even Ryuusei grasped entirely, only thinking that Yoru was simply giving him support. Emi was a sheperd and, by their words and obedience, Arisu and Takumi were sheep that refused to see the colours of their leader, closing their eyes to the fact that they were going in the direction of a slaughterhouse. Even if the other sheep present were to have the desire of stray away from that path, it just wasn't worth fighting for them, for their leader was present and ready to keep her position. Yes, in that scenario, it really did not matter of they thought of Yoruhi - or of Ryuu, even if he didn't care about that to begin with. Let's go then, he voiced to his friend, as they both turned their back to the group and began walking off. With those few steps, his mind wandered to the last year of his previous school. Of how he had been awarded the nickname of Susanoo. ~~ It was his first day in school after staying at home for some days after what happened at his home and his sister entering a coma. Apparently, the rumour had already spread around school. It didn't take long for everyone to start making comments, assumptions, accusations... A group of three boys even made it their mission to say them in Ryuusei's face before the beginning of class.
1: Eh, Ryuuu-kuuun, you got your sister killed?!
2: Not killed, you dumbass, they say she's in a coma!
1: Ah, that's basically the same thing, isn't it, Ryuu?
3: He really fits his name, doesn't he?
2: Oi oi oi, that's right!! How does it feel to be the reason for the sun to be hiding, Susanoo? *
1: You really are a useless dragon! *It was then, as they were laughing, that Ryuusei threw the first punch. As the teacher arrived, Ryuu was trying to fight off his other three classmates. * The kids were making puns with Ryuusei's name. "Igarashi" means "Fifty Storms", so they are making the connection with Susanoo, the God of Storms. According to legend he was the reason for his sister Amaterasu, Goddess of the Sun (Yasu - Ryuusei's sister) to hide (being in coma) for a long time. The other pun comes from his first name, since "Ryuu" can also mean "dragon".
~~
Of course the situation here wasn't the same, but it carried the same feeling: people saying things that Ryuusei deemed stupid and getting too emotional about it, which made him lose any type of reason. He didn't like to feel like that. He liked having a clear, rational, cold mind about things. He was now able to be like that again after getting himself more calm, but the best option was still to leave. But then...
When did Relena got in front of them, speaking those words with her eyes red and watery? And why was he also hearing crying and a fragile female voice from where the rest of the group was?
You zoned out, the female voice in his head reappeared.
Shut up, he mentally said, not having time todeal with his problems right now.
Yoru's expression had changed, at least for Ryuusei that was clear as day. He annouced to Relena that they were both staying, a tone that, in Ryuu's hears, also carried the words "I'm sorry" to her. Ryuu didn't even react, just opting to follow the body movements of Yoruhi in order to try and figure out what the hell was happening.
He felt a bump on his shoulder and a more than familair voice close to his hear. Hands in pockets, Ryuusei exhaled loudly, letting something out only meant for his best friend to hear.
You owe me dinner tonight.
Now with both of them having chosen to stay - Yoru because of his big, warm, stupid heart, Ryuusei because he was too loyal for his own good - they were with their faces turned to the group once again. While Yoruhi remained standing, Ryuusei sat on the ground, one leg extended and the other bent, allowing the boy to have support for his left arm.
Emi changed the meaning behind her speech as it suited her best, Arisu seemed to be fine with being in the shadow of the pink haired female, the self-proclaimed President of the Cooking Club seemed to be rational - Ryuu could even imagine being his friend - but also looked like he was naive towards some things, another girl showed up and then Emi spoke again, which just solidified Ryuusei's previous assessment.
He listened it to it all in silence, just taking mental notes of the content of each speech in order to save them in his memory. When there was a little silence, Ryuusei raised his hand in order to speak. His mature vocie was freezing as it could be, almost no detectable emotion.
Okay - he paused and looked at Emi.
Look, you created a situation where you could take the lead and then proceeded to refer to everyone as mixed-bags, saying how winning is important to you and asking us why we should be on your team. As soon as you got some push back you completly changed your speech and started saying that, afterall, a mixed-bag of strenght and quirks doesn't matter, that you don't really need to win and that you asked us here for everyone to talk together and learn from each other.
He kept looking at her, their golden eyes meeting each other.
I would have some kind of respect for you if you just assumed the ego that you clearly have and ran with it, but instead you just seem to backpedal at every chance you find fitting and try to please the majority with the words they want to hear. You want the attention of a leader, but lack the resolve of one, either for good or worse.
After finishing, he let his back drop and, with his hands beyond his head, he was now laying on the floor, looking at the clouds in the sky passing by.
That's just my opinion, you all can do with it what you want.
Ryuusei Igarashi was being way much more outspoken than what he usually was, but the whole siuation really was striking a nerve with him. At least now he had said everything that he wanted. Thankfully, this time, he was more calm and able to talk even more objectively and without emotion. The reaction he would get didn't really mater to him from this point on, with only one thing on his mind:
Ah, I wish I was one of those clouds...

They’d chosen to stay. Alright. She could live with that, if it meant they would be more well-behaved. But of course, nothing could be that easy in life. The two opted not to contribute to the exercise, instead passively and actively trying to antagonise her every effort to maintain peace. She wasn’t impressed, and it showed on her face; deadpan eyes stared at the two as they gave their comments.
For what it was worth, she hadn’t blown up at them. One look at her – or heck, anybody’s – uTube page would pull up an endless list of criticisms and name-calling, warranted or otherwise. If she hadn’t gained a thick skin, she would have been eaten alive by the masses years ago. That same trait meant that the boys annoyed, but didn’t anger her. Their double act was nothing new to her, so she had a few decent ideas for handling it. At the very least, she knew to pause. Read the crowd. Not say the first thing that came to mind (which was mostly a string of insults). Focus on lowering her construct into her awaiting palm, and letting both hands drop to her side.
“Alright.” Another pause. “It sounds like your problem is with me. Not the people here, or what they’re trying to do, but me specifically. We’ve already established that not everybody liked what I had to say. I clarified, and everybody else either accepted that or put their differences aside to get a job done. But not you two.” Still calm, according to her voice, but not particularly amused.
“They’re trying to work together and help each other, and you’re doing your damn best to derail the conversation. To keep the spotlight on yourselves, instead of on a group of students trying to prepare for their next challenge.” She wanted to outright call them selfish, but her better side told her to keep the accusations out of it. Good leaders didn't resort to that, and it was more important to put an end to their commentary – or at least, force them into a position where continuing would only make them outcasts. Not that they cared much about being the social pariahs, but that kind of outlook couldn’t do their reputation any favours, in or outside of the rescue course.
“Like I said, you don’t have to agree with me, or even like me. I don’t have a problem with that. I do have a problem with the two of you hanging around to do nothing but be difficult. If you’re that bothered by what I have to say, you, and hell, anybody else for that matter, can hang around after. I don’t have much else to do tonight besides train, and I’m more than willing to listen… Once we’re done here." She wasn’t counting on a pair of contrarians to try and hold a proper debate, but trying to talk to them after all was said and done would be easier for everybody except them. There was no doubt in her mind that if given the opportunity, they would drag out their efforts until somebody left – either themselves or another student – or they managed to push her buttons. "In the meantime, why don’t you try contributing your skills instead? Because from where I’m standing, you two are getting all the benefits of being here without adding to the pool.” Which weren’t the qualities she expected junior heroes to have, but she held her tongue. Besides, all of the students had brains, and they could draw their own conclusions. If she’d done her job, then theirs would line up with hers nicely.

Dreams breathe life into men. The stars... I'll reach them.
During the entirity of Emi Ryoko Tachibana's response, Ryuusei igarashi kept his golden eyes on the blue sky and white clouds that travelled in it. Not even once he looked at her, his expression being one of total lack of interest. Yet, he heard carefully, like he always did. It just... stopped being compelling to him. It a feeling that he was familiar with. Like when he played videogames and figured out the exact movements of the final boss he was trying to beat. Or when he knew that he had already won, but prolonged the fight just to grind a little bit more of EXP. Yes. He had already understood Emi by that point and she wasn't offering anything new. It was a shame, really - she had even been able to get emotion out of Ryuusei before. Unfortunetly, she was now just another NPC, repeating the same pattern over and over again. You didn't clarify your words - he kept looking at the sky, hand intertwined under his head - You changed them. It's called manipulation. He paused for a bit. There was a cloud in shape of a sword and another in the shape of a shield. It seemed fitting for the situation, Ryuusei thought. The world really could be poetic if you looked at it in the right way. In her verbal game, however, Emi had unleashed an interested bait - Ryuusei found it appealing to bite in. And yeah, let's meet after this then - he said, perhaps to her surprise .
In Ryuusei's mind, he called her bluff. She made the proposal of talking alone with him after the meeting in front of everyone, probably just to look good, Ryuu thought. Now that he had accepted such suggestion, Emi would've have to accept it in order to not look bad or like a liar in fron of the group. If she didn't accept, it would just prove Ryuusei's point of her just saying stuff that the others wanted to hear. He exhaled loudly before letting out the next sentence. Alright, I'l play your game.He could've said how Emi structured her sentence to make it looks like both him and Yoru just came looking for information about the others - like they were some kind of spy or traitor - and how it was just one more verbal device to make them look bad, since if that was the reason they were there they wouldn't have tried to go away before everyone finished talking nor would they have caused the genuine commotion that they did. Exposing that clear argument would probably make everyone question Emi even more, but... Ryuusei couldn't be bothered. He didn't want to be there to begin with. They wanted to know his skills and what not? Fine, so be it - he'd amuse them, even if there really wasn't any advantage in doing so. Besides: sharing the information would also prove that Emi was somewhat wrong about them, which was also interesting to think about. He stopped laying down and sat once again, his legs crossed like they would be in a meditation pose. It was then that he talked to everyone, in the same detached tone he always carried. I'm the Vice-President of Class 1-A. I was part of the Rescue Group that took care of the Ferris Wheel collapse at Herr Kunshu's Circus and, with the help of two other students, retrivied the QED Antidote and captured Ryouta Hideaki at the Semper Fi Military Camp. I have practical body-combat experience, uncommon agility and know how to handle a knife. My Quirk is called God's Alibi and with it I'm able to turn anything that I touch invisible, whether it's alive or not, whether it's myself or others. You can call me Susanoo'.Notes: ---Words: 631.Tags: Emi Ryoko Tachibana @eris Shimizu Haruto Momonji Yamada Mozuku Momoko Chikako Safaia Relena Tsuruya Takumi Fujimoto Yoruhi Honookaen Farrah di Prima

--- arisu --- - - - Haruto's friendly greeting- or, more the way it trailed off- reminded Arisu that she hadn't actually offered her own name. "Oh!! I'm sorry- I'm Disukodo Arisu, and it's a pleasure to meet you, as well." That, though, led into a rather complex reaction to Haruto's following statements. She thought he had good things to say when he made points about how to focus on teamwork and cooperation, and she made a point of nodding when that topic was addressed in a positive light. But when yet another person tried to differentiate between winning and taking rescuing seriously, as if they were somehow mutually exclusive? Her expression fell, becoming increasingly more frustrated the more that point was belabored.
"Please forgive me, Shimizu-san, but while most of what you said was precisely- or almost exactly- the way I feel about cooperation and trying to foster goodwill and cooperation between everyone here, it's really frustrating to keep having people act like the difference between using the word "winning" and "rescuing" here somehow differentiates between people trying to take this seriously or just trying to play a game. And the truth is that real professionals -have- to take risks to try to move faster in a disaster area. Triage is a risk- you're gambling that you can identify the right people to put off full medical attention so you can prioritize the people you think need it first. Rescue work is a gamble in a disaster area any time you're working with collapsed terrain or buildings- saving one person might shrink or close the window you have to rescue somebody else, and in all rescue scenarios, not every person who needs help can wait the same amount of time. Making it a competition puts the same weight of an uncertain time limit before there's a consequence- whether it's brain damage, organ failure, permanent disability, death, or just slipping a place in the rankings. You're not wrong to want to focus on doing the rescue right the first time- but we're all focused on the same thing, regardless of word choice."
"And you might not feel the same way about this, but I very strongly feel that making sure that not just us, but -all- the students in the public eye, regardless of school or nation, look good -is- the right thing to do. Putting specific effort into excelling at everything we do- saving lives in these scenarios included- is an investment in the future of not just us, but everyone who has a quirk. So... -please- don't treat an awareness and interest in performing well as some sort of disinterest in the well-being of the people we have the chance to protect. Those things aren't just not mutually exclusive- at the very least in my case, they directly coincide." She fell quiet, then. This topic was clearly one she felt very strongly about- or some aspect of it, though it might be easy to lose sight of which one it was, depending on perspective.
She brightened a little as Haruto showed off exactly what his quirk was. "That's- phenomenal, Shimizu-san. If we face anyone with an infection or poisoning- or just needs first aid, we'll know we have an ace up our sleeve! And it's strong, too??"
Takumi's comment about his quirk being nothing special led to a bit of a squint from Arisu. "What are you talking about? Your quirk is super versatile. Being able to foam up and project all manner of substances has all manner of application- I'll share some of my immediate ideas later, if you're willing to discuss it? It might well be far more applicable than you think- or I might have delusions of grandeur, but at least one problem will be solved if we talk it through!"
Farrah's arrival brought an immediate wave and a bit of a relieved wash through Arisu's thoughts. Another friendly face was most assuredly a welcome one. "Something like that, Farrah-san. But no worries- we're just happy you're here."
Yoruhi spoke up again, but only a little, and he seemed to grit his teeth after the last comment, like he'd meant to keep that to himself, or maybe just refuse to address Emi- Arisu wasn't at all sure. She pressed her lips thin when mention of the scenarios being a competition was thrown out in a bad light again, her head dipping as the others continued to hammer on what felt like a really personal point. It was getting hard to feel like she was still welcome. And Ryuu's response didn't really help- it wasn't aimed at her, but she felt like potshots at Emi were potshots at her by extension for holding much the same opinions as the more outspoken girl. And when she found out that one of the most outspoken critics of her position was the vice-president of her own class?
The moment her heart sank was visible on her face. She didn't have any more words. At least not right now. Instead, she stood silent beside Farrah and Emi, chin up and jaw set, despite what was clear alienation and discomfort in her expression. TAGS: WORD COUNT: 1013 TEMPLATE BY ELIZA @ BOTE & THQ

I see you through the flood See you through the fire See you through the storms-a-raging
❧ At least he managed to make Ryuusei stay, though his wallet will be the one suffering from it. Still, he was glad, even though Ryuu seemed to be the constant grumpy one this time around, without Yoru noticing they have switched places sometime between arriving here and hearing the first few words of the meeting uttered.
But the sparks flying around between Emi and Ryuusei were painful even to him, and he knew his wallet won’t be the only thing suffering the consequences. Emi offered them to talk in private after this, and while Yoru was ready to take her up on the offer, Ryuu beat him to the punch. That made him debate for a heartbeat longer, and instead decided to opt out. Both of them staying alone with Emi would appear as if they were crowding up on the girl, which would just fuel more animosity among the gang. The team, he corrected himself. He had to stop thinking about every gathering as a gang, really. Old habits die hard.
He would just stay nearby and wait for Ryuusei to be done with the talking if they really wanted to resolve this conflict. So Yoru just shrugged, arms still crossed in front of his chest. If someone else decided to stay, however, he wouldn’t feel bad about it either.
But the argument still continued, and once Yoru saw the expression on Arisu’s face change, that was when he decided it was enough. If he was weak to something, it was puppy eyes and sadness.
“Okay guys, listen. By this time, it is obvious everyone is pretty hard-headed about their opinion, so talking more about competition and winning will lead us nowhere. Even I can notice that.” Part of the reason why he tried to keep quiet and bite his tongue was this. They were already going in circles without fruition. “We can’t change your minds, you can’t change ours. So I would be happy to stop that part of the conversation and just go on, if everyone here had said their last pieces.” He mostly watched Arisu for reactions instead of Emi, because unlike the pink-haired girl, she seemed to be affected more. He wasn’t sure if the other was wearing a poker-face or was really uncaring about it all, though. He expected people to still talk about the topic, of course, Ryuu in the lead. So he poked his best friend’s waist with a foot to get his point across, meaning that what he said was pointed at him too. Ryuusei was awfully impulsive right now, biting any and all bait the others laid in front of him. That wasn’t how things supposed to go. But they were stuck on a tangent, and Yoru hated noting more than being stuck without progress. He didn’t mention any of his opinion on the competition or on Arisu’s and Emi’s words on purpose. If anyone, he knew how to fan fire and how to put it out, and it was best to swallow his words in order for others to do it too. “Not like talking about it more can help us any.”
When Emi asked for their abilities outright, he was just a tad bit hesitant to oblige, even when Ryuusei visibly humored her with an undertone. Yoru changed his posture, raising his arms up to lace his fingers behind his head instead, placing his bodyweight on one leg. He appeared much more open and leisurely this way, and it was an instinctive move to balance out Ryuusei’s still tangible discomfort.
“As for abilities, I am somewhat redundant here. Arisu and Takumi there are good at putting out fire, and that is also something I can do. But it seems like that part can be left to them, they would be obviously the best at it. Relena can deal with darkness, that is also something we have two people for, now. And even if someone thinks of themselves as useless,” he pointedly looked at Chikako, “that doesn’t mean they are. Every extra power can help. Since I won’t go near an ocean rescue area, not even touch it with a ten meter pole, I am happy someone is actually home in that kind of terrain.” That was a nod to Emi. “Haruto seems pretty versatile, as is Ryuu, so they can really best any kind of challenge.” He barely noticed he still somehow avoided talking about himself, and instead praised the others unconsciously. He already told them his name and class when he arrived, but with the new person showing up, it couldn’t hurt to repeat it.
“Okay, so. I’m Yoruhi, from 1-A. I stopped that runaway Ferris wheel this guy mentioned.” He pointed a thumb at Ryuusei from above him. Raising the whole of his arm forward, he activated his quirk for demonstration, as many of the others did. Bright orange flame that matched his eyes ignited over his forehead like a flaming crown before his whole arm was engulfed by flames from the tip of his fingers up to his shoulder, lighting up the already bright area more. “I can ignite a unique fire, and it can catch on pretty much anything, even non-flammable objects. But I can control how much it burns. Right now, it is barely lukewarm.” With one swift movement of his arm, the flames were gone, except for the crown that stayed for a bit more. His arms returned to the back of his head. “Obviously, I am pretty okay with fires and even ice cold weather, if we are faced with any of those. But I can move freely in any kind of terrain, so collapsed buildings or places full of obstacles are nothing to me. I’ve been doing parkour for as long as I can remember, so reaching the fifth floor from the outside is cakewalk. Even when most people collapsed, I will go forward.”
He took a moment of pause as his flaming crown disappeared, only his bright orange eyes remaining to remind everyone of his quirk’s nature. “I am really good at another thing. I can put differences aside. So even if I don’t like someone, I can still help and work together with others in the time of need. The rest is up to you.”
