"Hey if you think this doctor guy knows his stuff then I've no reason to really doubt you... I'll look him up!" She couldn't help but blush at the 'hotter than you think' line. It was hard to believe considering its the first time she'd ever heard something like this from someone she actually respected. Her mind tried to find some reason for Yumi to lie but came up with nothing, other than maybe trying to make her feel better which didn't... really fit Yumi's MO. She seemed very honest. Her lips stretched into a small but genuine smile. "Thanks, I-... I appreciate that. I really do." The tender moment didn't last long though, Kai swallowing the lump in her throat pretty quickly if only to not tip Yumi off to how much that comment had affected her. As she picked a song, Kai took a moment to just look her companion over, taking everything in. Not the looks, she'd seen those already but the way she moved, the way she thought. There was a natural spring in her step, a general playfulness that tinged everything she did and it made her so appealing to be around. It's why even though they'd only been together a few hours it felt like they'd been friends for years; because Kai has that exact same spark, that exact same fire. But there was also a distance there too. Like Yumi didn't want to let her too close. She understood that considering they had pretty much just met but... It felt like more. She wasn't sure how to describe it and she didn't really get a chance to find the words before Yumi snapped her back to reality with a nudge of her elbow, hurriedly looking towards the screen instead of at her, as if that's what she'd been doing all along. As much as Kai had become adept at reading people, Yumi was an enigma. A tangled mess of... something that Kai couldn't quite figure out. Maybe she'd never get the chance to. "Easy, huh? Do you have that little faith in me, geez?" Obviously kidding, she chuckled to herself, stretching a little as well but her thoughts were a little distracted, as were her eyes. Kinda hard to concentrate when she was doing that. No! Stop it! Come on, Kai this is important! Her pride was on the line here she had to focus. Taking a deep breath, she fell into position, trying to keep limber and quick. Regardless as to what had happened over the past few hours, right now Sticky Fingers was the enemy! She had to prove herself! As the song started, the slower tempo meant she fairly easily kept pace, learning the rhythm and the nuances of the game quickly. Keeping a central position was key but also all the movements were designed to flow together. Her natural grace and flexibility helped quite a bit but her inexperienced showed through pretty immediately, generally in the form of hitting notes slightly too early or confusing her left from right. Still, she was keeping a decent pace; she really did learn quick, huh? Yet when she afforded a glance at Yumi, she pouted at her little show-off moves, her competitive spirit getting the better of her and trying it for herself, only to miss a few notes as a result. Eventually she had to go back to doing it normally, a tinge of red coating her cheeks and her lips in a perpetual pout until she got into the groove again. Another obstacle though was her own choice of dress; with the rapid movements it was getting a little nerve-wracking trying to ensure that she wasn't spilling out of her own top, which is not a problem she generally had! When the song finally came to a close, she finished with a little jump, grinning at what she believed to be a pretty damn good score! And then she looked over at Yumi's and groaned dramatically, pretending to cry. "Oooh c'mon, I tried so haaard!" She couldn't hold it for long though, snapping up with a determined expression and pose. "Right, well, I've warmed up a bit! Time to do the real thing!" She stuffed more money into the machine before Yumi could even think about paying, flicking through the songs herself this time to find one. Not finding any songs she knew but seeing one that looked kinda goofy with a picture of a gigantic muscular guy in a speedo, she pressed it, not realizing it was a 'Hard' song, taking a deep breath as the song began to start. The beginning was once again quite slow, falsely raising her confidence, before the beat hit and she immediately almost had a heart attack. So many arrows! How was anyone supposed to hit all those! She tried her best, sweating like a madwoman, tripping over herself a few times as the beat seemed to just get faster and faster!

“Yeah yeah you have a right to complain once the song’s over.~” She flashed a smile across at Kai’s cheeky come back before turning her eyes to the screen. She knew Kai hadn’t actually taken offense in that but this was also for Yumi to warm up too. It had been a long while since she’d played one of these and while some sense of experience was always gonna be with her she definitely needed to ‘re-invite’ herself into the world of the DDR games. How long has it been since she’d managed to find time to hit one of these things up? A year? Maybe more? Hard for her to really remember but either way the point remained it had certainly been some time…
Seeing that Kai was actually having at least a little bit of trouble keeping up, less so with the game itself and more in her attempts to make it a bit more of a ‘show’ like Yumi was, she tried to pull it back at least a little. The flair she added was just natural to her so it was hard to pull out of it entirely, but all in all she managed to ease back at least a bit while still remaining pretty much in the zone. She never dismissed Kai but it was also clear that her focus may have been elsewhere for a good chunk of the song, leaving her focus on the game itself and the moves on the screen. Even when she’d found the rhythm and didn’t need to look per say, keeping her eyes on the dancing figure of the lord, the legend, the pepsiman… certainly helped her stay in the flow.
Yumi came to a stop with a heavy breath of her own, even with the slower paced songs people could underestimate how much of a workout these things could turn out to be. She wasn’t as exhausted as she may have been a few years back, but even with UA’s training she was still left with a bit of a harsher breath or two. “Hey don’t worry about it. I did kinda warn you you were messing with an expert here.~” She offered a sly smile across, a cheeky pull of her tongue to boot, glancing back to the screen when Kai insisted they go for a rematch, snickering a little, tho more so at the choice than Kai herself.
“Challenging the cosplay queen to an anime song remix? Ooo… I wouldn’t wanna be in your bikini.~” She offered across with a teasing smile. As this one began, the machine lit up a different color. It was a subtle signal to those in the arcade who knew about it that someone was attempting a hard song, so while the two girls had already drawn a few viewers in just from the fact they were two hot girls on the DDR machine, they were getting a fair few more once people caught onto the harder challenge going on. With the song’s slow start Yumi got into the zone, before the beat hit, and Yumi may as well have been river dancing with how quick and hard her feet were hitting the panels.
Glancing across to the blubbering mess that Kai was becoming Yumi felt… a little bad, but she was also kinda enjoying the chance to come out the victor in something like this. In UA even when she could win everything came off like a life or death scenario, people pushed themselves to bloody, burned out pulps to try and best her or people around her so… being able to win here and just brush it off as ‘oh its just a game’ felt kinda relieving!
Eventually the song slowed down a bit and Yumi noticed a new feature of the machine since it’s last update. Some of the song’s seemed to set you up to take Photos! Hahahah! She planted one foot back as the down arrow came, another foreward as the up arrow came a moment later, playing it extra silly as she did some kinda sumo fighter pose in the same moment, but following the image on screen she pulled up her wrist to her side, flexed what little bicep she had and burst into giggles the moment the flash was over. There was a few seconds of the song after that left while the machine printed out two copies of the picture, but all in all it wasn’t like there was anything monstrous left to deal with, leaving Yumi a bit short of breath but with a huge grin on her face, a “FANTASTIC” Flashing on her side of the screen. Not a perfect score but a damn good one to say the least.
“G-guess that was a little much for ya huh…?~” Yumi turned around and leaned over the hand bar setup behind the machine as she looked across to Kai, catching a bit of her shirt and lifting it up to her head to wipe the sweat from her brow with a giggle, glancing at the photo printer and snickering as she tore one photo from the other on the pre-made tear line, offering one to Kai. “Your consolation prize, I believe.~” With Yumi flexing to the song’s theme on one side and Kai struggling to breathe on the other.~

"Giiiirl, I'm gonna have to kick your ass twice as hard now, watch this!" Oh the hubris. The delicious, delicious hubris. As they went through the first song it was clear that Kai was at least able to coordinate herself and was fast and nimble enough to keep up but these rapid foot movements, while something she was used to while climbing, in this context seemed entirely too daunting. But she couldn't lose face! Her pride was on the line! Her competitive spirit would not allow her to lose!
And then she lost.
In front of an audience.
She shot Yumi a death glare at the 'expert' comment, pouting even more as she jammed her finger on the start button in frustration. "I'll get it eventually and then you'll see! You may be the Cosplay Queen but I am the Manga Master, Sticky!" Kai added a bit of a 'hmph' at the end there, trying to emphasize the name Sticky as if to taunt her. Probably not a good idea considering she just got her ass kicked on an easy song but no one ever said Kai was smart. In fact, not even she has ever said she was smart. Yet she was so distracted she almost missed the first note!
The song continued and Kai could feel the pressure of the crowd, like they were all looking and expecting these two girls to perform. Granted, some of them were probably just here because 'Hey look it's a girl in a bikini and a hot redhead!' but it was obvious some others were taking this seriously. She couldn't lose face again! No way! Even as she struggled to keep up with the tempo, she tried to regain her composure and even got into the groove a little bit at one point but there was no way it was ever going to last.
Sweat coated her body from the effort and she was almost glad she wasn't wearing a shirt because there'd be pit stains and underboob sweat the size of dinner plates by now. At least with no short in no one could really see that, even if her hair slowly became more and more matted and plastered to her face. For some reason she stole a glance towards Yumi, who was flowing into every move like a natural, as if she'd been playing these things since she was a child. How did she do it!? How did she get so good!? But that glance was a moment too long and she lost the rhythm she'd very briefly had.
A squeak of fear escaped her lips as she tried to catch up, yet her feet always seemed to be a moment behind the song and even when she tried to speed it up she was only tripping over herself. As Yumi moved into her pose at the prompt, Kai didn't even notice it until the very last second; which resulted in her tripping backwards, arms flailing, until she caught the railing. Her scream was rather high pitched and girly, which caused her already flushed cheeks to practically glow red. Rather than even getting up from her awkward position, she just lay down on the dance pad, defeated, looking up at the ceiling of the arcade with a thoroughly 'done with this' expression.
The picture that came out of the machine was of her screeching and falling, arms swinging wildly in an attempt to catch herself. While slightly blurry due to the motion, the terrified expression on her face was clear and the blurriness gave it a certain comedic quality. When Yumi showed her, she couldn't help but let out a little chuckle, even with her severely bruised pride. And ass. "Alright, alright, fine. You win." She shook her head as she used the hand-rail to pull herself up, grinning as she took the picture. The crowd had laughed as well when she'd fallen, even more so when the picture of her falling had flashed up on the screen, frozen in time. At least she'd brought a smile to their faces... and to Yumi's. She gave a short bow to the awaiting crowd, before hopping down off the machine.
"I swear I'll learn these things though and I'll come back and challenge you for your title, Sticky. You won't be DDR Queen for long!" She gave a determined grin, nudging Yumi in the side. "What else ya wanna play? Arcade's pretty empty around this time of day apparently." Kai spoke as she moved towards one of the claw machines, slipping some money in while she waited for Yumi to pick something else to do. Of all the things to be naturally talented in, apparently claw machines were it! She got a prize on her first try! A small grey elephant plush toy that felt very comfortable to hug. With a fist-pump to the sky, she turned with a mock smug expression on her face, before tossing the elephant to her. "Your prize for winning. Don't lose it now.~" Of course, there was every chance she had just been supremely lucky at that first crane. In fact that was probably the most likely outcome.
Kai might be graceful and fast but patient was not a word in her vocabulary. There was absolutely no way that she had managed to grab a prize on the first go out of skill. Yet, she still felt the wounds on her ego begin to heal a little.

Yumi was glad to see Kai be a good sport about things, sharing a warm smile with her. Briefly a moment of temptation flashed in her mind, like a natural instinct but one she had to suppress as she saw the girl beside her still in at least a small way working through her loss, ultimately deciding to just reach over and cup the back of her elbow with a soft squeeze of her hand, just offering a reassuring smile that it had been a fun time as they stepped away from the machine, giggling a little as she joked about the fact she'd come back to conquer her.
"Yeah we'll see... as for what else..." She burned a chunk of her energy already so she was hoping for something a little less physically intensive, her eyes flaring a she caught sight of a gun came she'd played when she was a kid. Time Crisis 15. One of those real gun games where you stepped on a pedal to decide if you were in cover or not. That could definitely work out for them. She gave Kai a little nudge and tipped her head towards the game. "Hey how about that after we-" She blinked as she spotted Kai had already won something on the claw machine game she'd stopped by, giggling a little at the plush little elephant, turning it around and snugging it into her chest so it's ears covered the lower half of her face. "Aw. Ya shouldn't have." She offered with a playful tone, the instinctive impulse pulling at her again but still managing to tug it down a little. "Here-" She opened up her satchel she'd still been carrying with her for the day, tucking the plush in in such a way that even when she closed the lid his head remained poking out of it. "Won't lose him now... come on we can play a co-op game.~ Most competitive we can get there is who gets the most kills or save's the other's ass the most...~"
The rest of the evening would probably blur together from there. A few highlights, like the two of them managing to beat time crisis with like, only an extra couple of continues. Nothing too major there and a bit of a victory high five to boot, and Yumi falling off one of the motorbike games when she leaned way too hard into a turn, which resulted in nothing but a giggle from the red head herself. Before long though, Kai was apparently starting to feel the natural drain of not having the sun for some time, and Yumi offered to at least walk her home for the day.
A short distance from kai's place, Yumi'd break a comfortable silence with a gentle bump of her hip, holding her ever warm smile towards Kai. "Hey... sorry for stealing your work day away from you. I really did enjoy it just... hope you aren't gonna get a bunch of complaints tomorrow or anything."

Kai could only blink as Yumi touched her like that, being so supportive and familiar. It felt good, to just... have someone be so close like that. She couldn't explain it. Like there was a part of her that just didn't feel complete until now. But was that because it was Yumi specifically or was it just a generic feeling of friendship? She didn't know. It was kinda hard to think with her around, like her mind was in some kind of haze. It was good though, like she didn't have to worry about anything; not the business, not her customers, not even what other people thought. It was just... them. Her heart almost stopped from the cuteness; with Yumi playing around with the elephant she felt her chest thrum like some sort of sci-fi power coupling. All sound became muffled and time seemed to slow. She just stared, mouth slightly agape. How could someone be so endlessly beautiful? It was impossible to comprehend, like she was staring at some sort of real life angel. An actual one, not like that girl with the wings from the TV. Kai's smile was warm, not competitive, peppy or mischievous like before, something so much different, a blush coating her cheeks. And then suddenly she was wrenched from it, like she had been falling asleep and someone had sharply awoken her from that half-awake state. They had only met a few hours ago. She had to remind herself of that. A few hours. Sure this was fun and she'd made a new friend but she had to stop herself from taking things too fast; especially when she wasn't sure Yumi would reciprocate. Wait... reciprocate what? Uuugh. It was so hard to think. She blinked as she suddenly become aware of her surroundings again, giving a slightly girly giggle at the elephant poking it's head out of the bag. A tomboy she may be but even she appreciated cute things like this, hell she still kept the teddy bear she'd had as a child. Suddenly her stomach dropped like a rock... she hoped Yumi wouldn't find out about that one. What kind of grown woman kept a teddy bear like that! A lonely, desperate one, that's what! She wasn't-... She wasn't lonely. Right? "That sounds like fun! Though it also sounds like you're afraid I'll win this time! Bet I can get more kills than you!~" Push it down Kai, come on. Don't ruin the day now. She'd never played Time Crisis before but she at least knew what to do, it wasn't that complicated. For a brief while she was able to let this weird feeling pass, losing herself in the game and teasing her companion, getting more and more tired and sweaty. It was pretty clutch, neither of them seemed very experienced with firearms but both were also way too stubborn to quit. By the time it was over, they had only a few continues left. But they'd done it. Together. The day continued and eventually melted into evening. Many more games were played; Kai thoroughly kicked Yumi's ass at the driving games because of course she did, it was pretty much all she ever played when she got to arcades. Yumi even had a slightly embarrassing trip of her own falling off of a motorbike game, which of course Kai helped her up from, just as she had done with the DDR machine. But she was starting to feel that familiar drain, that slight lag in her movements, the heavy feeling of her limbs. She'd probably need to drink something fatty tonight, like a yoghurt to stave off the empty feeling in her stomach. But when Yumi offered to walk her home, she could only blush. A spark of hope ignited within her that she swiftly and decisively tried to stamp out. Yet as they walked the haze seemed to lift, like everything was starting to unravel and relax in her mind. As they walked, they talked, about various things, laughing and giggling as the sky burned orange, then bled into purple. Her question was met with a small chuckle, Kai moving her hands up to rest against the back of her head as she walked. "Nah don't worry about it, I haven't had a night off in weeks, I needed this. Besides, it's a three day delivery window, no specific timed deliveries today." She laughed a little, nudging Yumi on the arm. "Besides, if there was I'm sure you wouldn't have minded being my deputy for a hot minute. I even have a spare hat in the locker!"As they approached Kai's apartment complex, she moved up the stairs, stretching a little as she reached her door. Reaching into her pocket, she found the keys and moved to put them into the lock, before hesitating. Almost on instinct, she turned to Yumi, opening her mouth to speak. But no words came out. Her brain screamed at her to just ask what she wanted to ask. Ask her to come in for some coffee. Ask her. Ask her!
ASK HER!
ASK- "I- um... t-thank you... for tonight..." What was that!? That wasn't what she wanted to say! She mentally berated herself, even wincing a little as she realized what she'd said. She wasn't any good at this! Why couldn't she have been blessed with just a little more confidence!? "It was um... i-it was nice." Her smile was awkward, her heart beating out of her chest like it was some sort of boxing champion. What the hell was she doing!?

Yumi was glad she wasn't taking this woman too far out of her way at least. She'd have felt terrible if she somehow learned by a text message or something down the line that she ended up losing a client's trust or something just to take a day off with her. The fact she hadn't given herself a day off in so long though... was she counting weekends? Yumi hoped not cause it was kind of hard picturing even this peppy person working herself to the bone like that. "Welllll... if you ever need another just send me a message on my blog okay? Or a text through that messenger app I registered you on... I mean you gave me a good day, so I definitely owe you one back right?~" She chuckled at the idea of being her co-worker. "Oh trust me, I'd make your deliveries faster than you can keep up with... may accidentally fry that spare hat in the process though.~"
Stopping at the bottom of the steps up to the apartment complex door, Yumi waited to watch her go in with a warm smile, only to see her turn about and part her lips. Had she forgotten something? Heh, did she want the elephant back? She might playfully fight her about that...~
Oh... just a thanks. Why... why did that feel dissapointing? The most she'd been expecting was a playful fight over the elephant. She shifted her gaze away for a second, thinking quietly on something as she found herself climbing one or two of the steps between them, Yumi about the other girl's height given how shallow the steps where with just one between them, rubbing at the back of her neck. "Well er..." She rested a hand on the step's railing, leaning in a little to the blonde without much thought to it. "... you have my number if you ever wanna do it again yeah?"

Frankly Kai wanted to just fall to the ground and weep. She'd screwed this up so bad! At least if she'd asked and Yumi had she had a boyfriend and couldn't she'd have at least stated her intention! But this was just... nothing! She'd never felt so sure that this was what she wanted before, even if it was just for one night and they stayed friends. Even if it was literally just going inside to drink coffee and chat more. She wanted more time! More... anything! She wanted more of her.
Maybe she could fix this. Maybe she could find a way to communicate her want properly, to reach out and show her that today was amazing! She racked her brain for a way to patch up her blunder, to stop the sinking ship. Think brain, think! She was actively running out of time, the moments were ticking by, everything seemed like it was going in slow motion, like she was in a video game and had bullet time but no ammunition to shoot. Her heart pounded, her legs shook a little. What was she supposed to do?
And then, Yumi stepped closer.
She hadn't been intending it to mean anything but to Kai, that closeness was so... overwhelming. When she leaned in she was supposed to kiss her right? That's what happened in all the movies... But could she rely on moves to teach her how to romance someone? How to sweep them off their feet? Kai tried to respond to her words but her breath caught in her throat, cheeks lighting up red as she felt that pounding heart of hers turn into a jackhammer. Eventually she forced out a squeaky little, "Y-yeah..." staring deep into her eyes.
There was a moment there where she thought she understood. That she instinctively knew what she was supposed to do, that her heart was begging her to do. Gently and carefully she leaned forward as well, every moment that passed feeling like an eternity. The movement was almost mindless, as if working on purely animal instinct. Her lips inched closer, her hand clutched the railing close enough to feel her warm, her mind swimming in hazy, desperate thoughts.
But suddenly, she stopped.
Something forced her to stop, so re-evaluate the situation. Was this fair to her? Should she have done this? Their faces were only a few inches apart, Kai's breathing hot and heavy but her whole body shaking as if she were freezing. What was she doing!? Either commit to the kiss or don't do it in the first place! Clenching her jaw, she pulled back, biting her lip awkwardly for a few seconds. "S-sorry I-... sorry..." She wanted nothing more than to just dive inside her house, curl up under a duvet and just guzzle that bottle of wine she had in the cupboard right now. Stupid! Stupid stupid stupid!
She'd just blown it big time, she knew it. Instead of fixing the situation she'd just made it sooo much worse!

Yumi might question the move she'd made later. Stepping up to her like that, taking a hand on the railing? it just flowed, naturally, instinctively, and much later she'd look back and realize she absolutely shouldn't have done that but right now it just... it just flowed. There was no other way for her to really justify it to herself. She wouldn't have acted this way walking someone like, say, Angelica home, even if they were single! Why had she been such a dumbarse and send such a poor signal here!? M-maybe in her old days when she was intimate all over the place this could have been excused but...
Right now though she didn't even have the thought to call herself a dumbarse. As she lingered there she noticed that Kai was starting to lean in and perhaps a second too late for it to not be painfully awkward Yumi herself inched back, her lips parting to say something, to interupt but... the most that showed on her face was a clear realization of what Kai was doing, her voice a little staggered, an unsure sound escaping her throat but... little else. Hand sliding back down the railing and easing a step back down. She still had a foot on the same step but now bent, lingering a little lower than Kai now, seeming to put a lot more clear distance between them.
"I..." She... was at a loss as to what to say. Should she console her, should she excuse herself as having a boyfriend? She... ugh she really didn't feel like admitting that part of the grand equation right now. Her own heart was pounding a little both hating herself for the mistake and just generally thrown and knocked off balance. Before she knew it she was taking the next step backward without a word... another...turning about and walking away with a still stunned expression in her eyes till she was far enough down the road Kai couldn't get a good angle on her face.
But... of course she couldn't leave her like that. Without thought or second guessing, she turned on her heel, still close enough to call to her without shouting, walking backwards, a smile she couldn't help on her face as she simply re-iterated. A smile in her voice.
"You've got my number.~"
With that and a small wink she turned back about on her heels... she might regret that later but... she didn't want Kai to avoid calling her either.

That little step back felt like a lead weight being dropped into her stomach. Clearly Yumi had thought about it, considered it for a moment and then moved away. What had she been expecting? Of course she didn't want to kiss someone she just met... it was just Kai getting all the wrong signals, right? All the... all the wrong signals. Yumi had just been trying to be friendly, that was it. She hadn't been trying to lean in for a kiss or to share the intimacy of the moment or anything. She was just trying to be friendly. And Kai had spat that back in her face. The hesitation in her face, the little noise she made to say she was unsure, the step backwards. Kai wanted to punch herself, or punch the wall or the railing or... punch something hard. Why had she been so stupid to assume this could ever work like some movie plot? That some magic spell or something would fall over them if they kissed. Her heart sank, trying to force an apologetic smile but it just looked awkward. Without a word Yumi was backing away, Kai reaching out weakly with a hand as if to ask her not to go. To stay, to forgive her for being so bold. But after a moment she pulled it back. She watched her go. The woman who had made her so happy today... she just... watched her leave. Her hand clutched the railing, hoping against all hope there was a way to make this right. And then she turned. She couldn't really see her expression from this distance but... was she smiling? No way was she smiling, who would smile after that? You've got my number.You've. Got. My. Number. She replayed the words in her head several times, her brain lagging as it tried to process what she'd just said, only for her body to move on instinct, giving her a weaker little wave. Her voice was weak but Yumi might still be able to hear her. "M-mine too!" But... what had she meant by that? Was she just being nice or... or was their still a chance? Was she maybe just not ready for it yet? Had she just moved slightly too fast? Kai rubbed her face with her hand, feeling sweaty and faint. Cautiously, she moved to her door, inserting the key and stepping inside. Her back pressed against the door as she closed it, squeezing her eyes closed as she slid down it and slumped to the floor tired, both emotionally and physically. She'd probably be drinking tonight. Maybe go into the Astachat and drown her weird sorrows in memes and silly conversations. It was impossible to know what Yumi was thinking when she'd said what she did, when she'd told her she still had her number. And yet there was one thing she knew for certain, one thing that this whole night had made clear, one thing that her awkward little display at the door hadn't destroyed. She was in love.
