dine and dash FIVE FIRST WORDS OF POST The shock of being left at the roadside still hadn’t left the boy. It’d been so emotionless, and so surprising. You would think that for such a callous act, Shiloh would’ve been pushed from the moving car, but no-- they said “We’re here, this will be your new home” and then drove off without him. He knew their names, sure, but if they’d left him, they probably didn’t want to be found. Shiloh had waited the better part of an hour until someone who spoke English explained that he had been left in front of an orphanage.
Having been given that information, Shiloh decided he should find breakfast.
After all, he had a whole life ahead of him for being forgotten.
So what harm was a little sightseeing? Besides, it wasn’t like anyone was expecting him… or else they wouldn’t have locked him out.
So, Shiloh took his suitcase in his taloned hand, and set-off, hopping along with bobbling hop-skip. After a while, he reached the city-- the boy knew this to be the city because of the *whoosh* of the electric doors and the *ring-a-ding* of their sensors and the fast, unconcerned steps of passerby’s. In the lull of the early morning, people were too busy heading to work to pay any mind to the boy that barely glanced a meter.
It wasn’t long until he found the grocery store-- he knew this to be a grocery store because of the shopping carts and the crinkle of paper bags in the arms of patrons. He stashed his suitcase on the roof of a nearby building, and then returned with a casual hop-skip into the store. A short meandering around the grocery store later, and Shiloh found the produce section-- its low tables of spherical delicacies, labeled with small, unintelligible signs.
Now, Shiloh was a good boy who knew right from wrong.
But Shiloh was also a very hungry boy with no money to his name.
So Shiloh grabbed a plastic produce bag, trailing his thumb and forefinger along the surfaces of fruits until he found the slick, waxed surfaces of apples, and grabbed roughly a dozen. He painstakingly sealed the bag with a twist-tie, concealed it in his wing, and hop-skipped towards the door.
A man shouted in Japanese. Shiloh clicked inquiringly. They were walking towards him.
Shiloh didn’t speak Japanese, but he assumed they wanted to know if the boy was going to pay for his apples.
To which Shiloh replied by simply breaking into a run.
“Hey, get back here! You have to pay for those! Thief! Thief!”
The child ran, bobbling down the sidewalk past unsuspecting pedestrians. He clicked frantically, trying to avoid any obstacles that might arise. But he reached a blind corner (where his echoes didn’t reach), and read headlong into another pedestrian. As small as he was, Shiloh just rebounded, landing on his rump. His bag of apples rolled free of his wing.
“Thief!” the cashier’s voice called after him, roughly a block away.
“Excuse me!” Shiloh said distractedly, in his heavily-accented English.
He began to feel the ground for his squandered apples.

G was on his way to a grocery store, he needed to buy several things such as fruit, milk, water, pasta, sweets for Miku, diapers for Kai and other things. Needless to say, G needed to get a bunch of stuff because always going to the grocery store was not productive, so it was best to get as much as possible. As G walked though he heard something 'Thief! Thief!' "Who? What? Where?" G thought to himself And then suddenly someone ran into him and then fell on their bum. G looked down and saw a bat boy child on the ground with a bunch of apples. The bat child not only seemed young, but spoke english. This wasnt your typical hooligan shoplifting. Something was wrong. Well, luckily he wasnt Vigilante mode to get things overcomplicated.
G then placed a hand on the bat boys shoulder, he wanted to speak to him, but soon the people who were chasing him caught up. Welp, time to improvise "Oh! My son! There you are! You buzzed off so fast I forgot to give you your money for the apples." he said and then reached into his pockets. He had enough for 3 apples, otherwise if he used more money he wouldnt have enough for his own shopping. "Here you go gentleman. Im sorry, my little sonny gave you trouble. He's such a shy boy. I guess you scared him off. Dont worry I'll give him a stern talking for trying to nab the apples" G said and then grabbed 3 apples and gave them to the bat boy. He helped batty off of the ground. Grabbed him by the head and took him away from the angry men. He hurried because he didnt wanna be questioned by those guys. It was OBVIOUS G and the bat werent related at all, because one is human the other is a bat. Its a literal day and night difference. As they distanced themselves, G felt he could finally talk "Ok. You're safe. Now can you please tell me why were you trying to steal those apples?" G asked the bat in english

dine and dash THE MAN-- AT LEAST, JUDGING by his build and voice, he seemed to be a man-- spoke to Shiloh in a booming voice. Shiloh didn't understand a bit of it, trying to jerk his shoulder out of the man's grasp, his heart hammering against his ribs in a panicked, uneven staccato. Three apples thrust into his hands, and something was passed from the man to the shopkeepers.
They should've stooped down to grab the fallen apples, but in thin voices they insisted that bruised apples were no good for selling to customers before storming away. Shiloh finally remembered to breathe. Shiloh was hoisted to his feet, a hand placed firmly on his head as the man directed him away. Thankfully, the shopkeepers were gone, but... what did this guy want?!
When the man finally addressed him, in plain English, the boy tried to summon up the words to speak without avail. He'd been dumped at the gates of the orphanage, with no idea where to find his Auntie or Uncle, and now he'd been caught stealing. Thieves went to jail. So... it seemed like he would still be getting locked-up?
The boy sniffled, and then he started to cry, unable to keep his composure. He was scared that this well-meaning man, whose hand was still on his head, would turn him in to the cops.
"I'm h-hungry," the boy said lamely, his voice thick and wet "I-I-I h-have no money."
And he had no way to get money. He didn't even know how to beg for money. And he'd just been left on the curb by who he'd assumed to be his family.
"P-please, don't make me..." he'd started to hiccup, thoroughly terrified. He didn't know the English word for 'jail', so he began to babble in French, "Please don't make me go to jail, I'm not bad, I'm just hungry. Please."

The young boy frightened and barely said he was hungry and had no money. As they walked the boy then pleaded him. G raised his brow and wondered what was he talking about, but then he spoke french. G then stopped and crouched down so the two have an eye to eye "Whoa whoa whoa. Slow down cowboy." G spoke in english to the boy, and then spoke very slowly "You're not in trouble. I bought those apples for you. So you can eat those. Secondly, I dont understand what else you wrote. And thirdly, Im just taking you on a walk with me. I had to lie to those people I was your dad. So now I have to go to a different store. And you're coming with me" G explained to the boy
So then G got up and continued to walk with the boy "So, whats your story? How did an english speaking bat child found themselves on the streets of Japan starving?" he asked the young one. G wondered if a tourist lost the boy. In that case they'd need to go to police to do that missing person thing. The police can find his parents, plus G was a civi now, so why not

dine and dash THE MAN'S INSISTENCE DID LITTLE TO placate the bat child. He nodded his head, but the panic that was settling-in made him all snotty and hiccup-y. Tears rolled down his fluffy cheeks from his beady, black eyes. He was going to go to jail and he was going to stay there until he died. So spake the fatalism of a scared ten-year-old.
So Shiloh just stood there, quivering and crying not-too-quietly and refusing to look directly at the man in front of him. Not only was he embarrassed, but he was scared. The man insisted that Shiloh come with him, when they went to another store. Hopefully the boy could remember where his things were. Shiloh nodded, to show that he understood.
Obediently, the child followed the man, whimpering to himself and keeping his nose pointed towards the pavement. His ears drooped a little.
The man asked the obvious question. Why was Shiloh on the streets? Why was he hungry?
Shiloh knew that if he told the man the truth-- that he'd been left by his family at the gates of the orphanage, and that he'd wandered off-- the man would just take him back.
"I l-live outside," the boy said simply. That was part of the plan, anyways, "I live in F-France first, where I learn French and English. Then I come here second, and I don't know the language. Yet. I come here recently."
There were noticeable holes in the boy's story-- why he came here, where his parents were, et cetera. Shiloh was a bad liar. So rather than lie, he told the truth... and omitted the things that a grown-up would find suspicious. His face felt hot from not having told the entire truth. The tears were cold against his hot, embarrassed face.
"B-b-but I come here with no money, and no food."

G raised his eyebrow when the boy said he lives outside. How can a poor child live outside.... ... ... Actually point taken, he lived outside too and stole and then became a villain. Then he looked at the boy who said he is French or live in France. But... how did a french person get dumped in Japan? Did someone kidnap him? God what would that do to the parents. But then that gets answered, he knows english and french and then he came here and doesnt know the language and then he came.... and has no money and food G blinked a bit as they walked and conversed "How did you come? Did some bad people take you here by force? Did your parents take you here? Like... why do you live outside?" he asked.
Soon they arrived at another grocery store. He then looked at him "Ok, we can talk and shop together. But dont steal anything. And if you see something you like, then ask me first and I'll see if I have enough money to buy it" G said and then the two entered the store to converse. The first place he went was where all the fruit was. He wondered if he should get bananas or apples. But considering the bat had apples now, maybe he could buy more and some for himself. But first he looked at the prices

dine and dash SHILOH HAD TO JOG TO KEEP-UP with the man's longer strides, and his legs were beginning to ache from the effort of keeping-up. He tried to hide that he was panting a little, his pink tongue lolling out from between jagged little teeth.
"Non, non, nobody... took me," the boy said, between uneven breaths. While Shiloh was in okay-shape, running was not his strong suit. They reached the store, and he paused, finally catching his breath. What could he tell the man, that his supposed family had just dumped him on the sidewalk in front of an orphanage? What kind-of child was so bad that even their family didn't want them? Well, that was easy... a bat-child...
Tears were starting to well-up in his eyes again. Shiloh was a bad liar, but the truth was an ugly truth, and he didn't want to say it. He shook his head. He didn't want to say that his parents were dead, and that the people who were supposed to take care of him had left him. The man would think he was bad, after all he was a thief, and Shiloh didn't want the man thinking that he was bad.
Shiloh kept shaking his head, outright refusing to speak, until the man advised him that they'd walk together, and that Shiloh shouldn't steal from the store, but ask for the man to buy him things. Wow, like a real Papa!
"C-can I ride in uh... the shopping, uh..." the word escaped him, but Shiloh did his best to procure it, "...le panier?"
Thankfully, the English did have the word "pannier" for baskets attached to bicycles, so it wasn't too much of a stretch to determine that Shiloh wanted to ride in the shopping cart.
"My legs are tired," the child insisted meekly. All of this walking and keeping-up was a lot of work. He was still teary when he made these requests, of course, so the man would be hard-pressed to refuse.

The boy said that no one took him, so that was good. It wasnt a kidnapping. But then G assumed he either ran away from home or his parents abandoned him. G didnt wanna think about those grim ideas, but the tears on the boys face would say it all. The bat child shook its head and refusing to speak any further, that is until they reached the store. G then told the boy not to steal and if anything catches his interest that he should ask G, and then G would see would he be able to afford and buy it.
The small one then shyly asked if he can ride in the shopping panier? Ah, he must mean the shopping wagon! Yes, indeed! He said his legs are tired so that must be it "Sure" G said and then picked up the boy and sat him in the shopping cart at that little kid seat "There you go!" he said and then started pushing the cart. He did imagine that it was Kai. Ah yes, when he grows up he'll push Kai like this as well Now G went to the fruit area. Thinking what to do, what to take. Apples or bananas. Hmm, maybe bananas. Yes, he is leaning toward that. He shrugs and takes 6 bananas and weighs them and sticks the price on the plastic bag of the bananas and then goes elsewhere. Next place is milk

dine and dash WHEN HIS PAPA HAD TAKEN HIM grocery shopping, he’d always lifted the hatch on the cart (which helped to store it) and let Shiloh climb into the basket where the groceries usually went. Shiloh would then become the guardian of the groceries, sorting them into piles, pretending he was building a city. It was easier to let Shiloh crawl in, since the thin membrane of his wings went from just below his arms down to his belly button.
This man, however, scooped Shiloh up and placed him in the seat near the handles of the shopping cart. The gesture bewildered the child, and made him go quiet. His feet went through the leg-holes easily enough, as his legs were so short. But his wings took more adjustment—he balled his “hands” into fists, folding his wings and tucking them over the back of the seat. It gave Shiloh a sort of chicken-wing look, with how his arms were tucked.
He kept his eyes closed as they maneuvered through the displays, using the ambient noise of the grocery store to get a lay of the area. He knew this to be the produced department because fruits and vegetables came in all sorts of unusual shapes. His ears twitched spasmodically, and Shiloh turned his head as the man retrieved some bananas.
Something else piqued the boy’s interest, small spherical fruits in a mesh bag, one of Shiloh’s favorites. He began to click softly, turning his head in the direction of the fruit.
“Mandarines,” the child whispered, before grasping eagerly for the man’s sleeve, tugging at it with his two, clawed fingers.
“Sir, can we get mandarins? Please!?” he said, more loudly, fanning his wing towards the fruits. Shiloh loved tangerines more than he loved apples, and his excitement over discovering them was tangible. How quickly the boy changed his tune when he got excited about something.

As he was leaving, he felt a tug on his sleeve. The boy eagerly asked for mandarins. And he seemed pretty passionate about it. G counted his money once again and shrugged before he said "Ehh, sure. I have a bit of extra." and then he went to get the mandarins and placed them in the cart.
After getting the fruit for himself, his family and this bat boy. G went to the other area to buy milk. Of course he could get the cheapest carton of milk because he didnt wanna waste too much money. And then he looked at his list "Bananas check. Milk check. Pasta..." he mumbled to himself and then steered the shopping cart to where the pasta was so he can get that.
As he steered the shopping cart, he looked at the bat child "Hmmm. I dont think I ever asked you your name. So can you tell me your name?" he asked as he realized he never bothered to ask. And as much as he'd like to take the bat home. Sadly he couldnt. And he cant just leave the boy on the streets after doing his groceries. There had to be a solution. He had to help somehow. G just had to figure out how

dine and dash THE BOY WAITED FOR THE MAN'S DECISION, watching as he counted the money in his hand. Finally, the decision was made-- he had enough money to spare for mandarins.
"Yay!" Shiloh cheered, pumping the air with his fists. Upon purchasing the mandarins, Shiloh took the fruit, all bound in their plastic netting, and set it in his lap, clicking eagerly.
The ambient sound of the grocery store helped paint its landscape—rows upon rows of towering metal shelves, filled with boxes and cylinders and bags. Shiloh could really only discern the contours of the things that were immediately around his grocery cart, in his specific aisle… but they were so nondescript, without being able to see their pretty packaging. And the fluorescent lights hurt his eyes, so Shiloh kept them closed. He sighed. Bo-ring.
So, as a means of amusing himself, Shiloh began to sing under his breath, in French. It was a lilting and somewhat nonsensical song.
The man asked Shiloh his name-- you weren't supposed to tell strangers your name—
“No.”
But this stranger was buying Shiloh mandarins, and help save Shiloh’s apples from the mean shopkeeper, so… maybe it would be okay to tell him?
Shiloh picked at the plastic netting, pausing in his song.
"Okay, I will tell you my first name,” Shiloh corrected himself, “It’s Shiloh.”
The man didn’t seem like a bad man, so Shiloh would trust him with his first name.
“What’s your name?”

The bat hummed and quietly sang a foreign song. It was rather cute. He wondered if Kai would do the same when he grows up. As they shopped, G remembered he doesnt know the kids name. So he asked. But when the boy said a flat no. G raised his brow and asked "Pardon moi?" it was the only french he knew, but he thought it was rather fitting right about now.
Bat boy paused his song and pondered for about a moment and said, he will reveal his first name... Shiloh. "Interesting name" G commented, but before he could introduce himself, the boy Shiloh asked G his own name "My name is,..." what name to give? Well the boy seemed sweet, maybe G can tell him his real real name. Well, why not, risk for biscuit "Gilbert" it was rather odd, hearing him say his real name after so so many years. He still flinched a bit when he said it. Why did he say it? He hated his name. But it was something about this cute lil innocent boy, who is all alone lost in a foreign country, who did not want to say his name to strangers. Something kind of resonated there with G. He felt compelled to say it He then added "Gil for short" G decided to only say his first name, just like the boy, so they were even. Speaking of even. Even though his name was now Gabe, he didnt like the name. Maybe he should change it. Gabe is such a chad name. At least change it to Gabriel and keep Gabe for short. Yeah, he should do that. But talk to Hana first, because he wont do it without her say so.

dine and dash THE MAN'S FRENCH ACCENT WAS absolutely horrible, even if it was just a few words. The gesture was nice, though—it sent a pang through the boy’s chest, for reasons he couldn’t entirely place.
The man remarked that Shiloh’s name was “interesting”, before revealing that his name was Gilbert.
“Gilbert,” the child repeated, tracing the shape of the name with his mouth. It sounded familiar, “Oh! Your name is Gilbert!”
The second time that he uttered the name, it sounded distinctly not-English. An American, with a French name, in Japan! How funny! Almost as funny as a French boy with and English name, honestly.
“Gilbert, Gil for short,” the child remarked cheerfully, smiling to himself, “It’s a good name.”
The child decided that, rather than wait for another question to get lobbed at him, he would, instead, ask a question first.
“Gilbert,” the child said again, once again using the French pronunciation, “Do you have any kids?”
He seemed like a nice, fatherly man. So Shiloh imagined that he had kids, “Do they speak English, like you?”
Even if his answer had been “No, I don’t have any kids,” the second question would still follow. The child was curious about the man who’d saved his apples—clearly someone that nice had to be a father. There was simply no other rationale.
"What are they like?"

It was his real name and he hated it. But he knew it had a french version of it. So he said it to the french bat. As expected, the young boy repeated his name in a french manner. And honestly it sounded much better in french. Young Shiloh repeated the name and the nickname G told him. The boy sounded cheerful and said it was a good name. That made even G smile a bit.
Now the boy asked a question, he asked did G have kids. G of course nodded "Yep. I have kids" after that the boy asked do they speak english like him "Hmm. I believe 1 does. I never thought about asking the other. The 3rd one is a baby so he doesnt speak anything" G answered
And then another question came. He asked what are they like "Adorable of course. And awesome because they have me. Two of them are gonna be heroes. But now they're in the edgy teen phase so they're a bit rebellious. And well, teens are bound to get some angst too. So yeah. But whatevs, they're still great"
Ah those teens and female hormones. How was he gonna handle them. Hell even Miku was being an angsty teen, where did he go wrong? Maybe he was supposed to shelter her more. Oh boy, if Hana heard him even think that she'd kill him.

dine and dash THE CHILD PUMPED HIS SHORT LEGS through the holes of the cart, listening as he explained that perhaps one child spoke English, while one was a baby and didn’t speak at all.
“Why don’t you teach your kids more English?” the bat inquired. Shiloh’s Papa had taught him so much French and English and Spanish, and the ten-year-old took to the other languages like a fish to water. So it seemed strange that Gilbert wouldn’t share his language, too? Especially when he was so nice.
Gilbert had two, edgy teenagers who wanted to be pro heroes, if they could stop being so angsty all the time.
“They want to be heroes?” the child echoed, immediately star-struck. He was vaguely aware of the Japanese hero scene, since his late mother had been from Japan. But the whole concept of using your Quirk for heroism was foreign to the little bat.
“How does one become a hero, Gil?” the bat inquired, tapping his claws on the handle of the cart, “Isn’t being a hero just… putting-on funny clothes and doing good things?”
Alright, so his understanding of heroism was based largely on cartoons he’d watched—which, by modern standards, was vigilantism. Ironic, given who the child didn’t know he was talking to.
“I think I would like to be hero,” the child mused, slowing the rhythmic kick of his legs, “Or an astronaut. I could be the first outer-space hero. I could fight bad guys on the moon. Or aliens! And robots!!”
The prospect was certainly exciting.
