394 words ft. kasumi okino Kuranosuke was awoken by an alien invasion. That was the best way to describe it. He was curled-up beneath a bush, the sunlight warm upon his black fur, when it attacked. He’d read about alien invasions from a book-- silver-skinned creatures with big eyes would come and kidnap people in the dead of night, and do experiments upon them.
The biggest difference was that this alien came at midday, when the sounds of children from the nearby school’s playground barely brushed against Kuro’s sensitive ears. The alien descended through the bush, landed right atop the cat, and sent him scurrying from a dead sleep. It took a moment for the cat to get his bearings, staring wild-eyed at the bush. When he ascertained that the threat wasn’t pursuing him, he crept cautiously back, nose low to the ground.
Upon closer inspection, he’d find that the thing was plush, sewn of linen. He rooted at the thing with his nose, and flipped it over. A doll. A kid’s toy, with yarn hair and button eyes and a little linen dress. He sniffed it. A young girl’s scent was heavy on it. A cherished possession. Hm. Kuro lifted his nose skyward, sniffing at the air.
If it was so cherished, why did it come sailing down from the sky?
He could smell the person who owned this doll. She wasn’t far. Curiosity piqued, Kuro followed his nose, leaving doll where it had fallen beneath the bush. As he pursued the scent, the clamor of children's’ voices grew louder. It must have been recess at the elementary school. A chain-link fence divided the playground from the wilds where Kuranosuke had been napping. There was a hole beneath the fence, dug by some idle child dreaming of escape, or perhaps a larger animal. Kuro didn’t bother with that. He stood at the fence, tail swishing inquiringly.
Another sniff at the air. The doll’s owner was nearby. There was a burst of voices, and shouting, and Kuro’s attention snapped towards it, cowering slightly. There was a gaggle of children, a few round-faced girls clustered around a child who was very… pink. Her face was pink, her hair was pink. She was interesting! Kuranosuke watched, his tail never losing its swish as he watched. One of those girls owned the doll… he could smell it. The question was, which one?

Why did children have to be so cruel?
Kasumi liked school a lot, she liked to learn and she liked to color, she was curious about many topics and wanted to know lots of information like her papa did. Starting a new grade always had it's challenges, new students, new teachers, different things to learn about. Because of her mental situation, Kasumi was starting in the third grade, having graduated from second year this past year. Since being in the orphanage, the main focus was always learning, sending the children to school and letting them learn new things. Having been taken in by Mosa, Kasumi had learned lots of new things and hoped to learn more from her papa and her teachers. The first day of school, however, did not seem like a good one for Kasumi.
All was well in the morning with classes, but by the time recess rolled around, things started going wrong. Kasumi kept to herself, playing with her doll Aki in a small patch of grass since it was a nice day outside. Just as she was minding her own business, a group of girls, her fellow classmates, came up to her and took Aki away from her. One of the girls had a quirk that allowed her to stretch her hand up high in the air, making it nearly impossible for Kasumi to reach her. "You shouldn't be playing with dolls, dolls are for babies." "She's just a silly little baby," some of the girls said snarkily at Kasumi who desperately tried jumping up to reach her dear friend. "P-Please give Aki back!" Kasumi said, tears welling in her eyes as she looked at the girl who held Aki in her grasp. "You don't look like you need this baby toy any more, why don't we help you get rid of it?" the girl with the elongated arm said, chucking Aki over the tall fence that blocked the playground in from the streets. "AKI!" Kasumi cried out, watching as her beloved friend was tossed over the fence, seemingly gone forever. The young group of girls continued tormenting and teasing Kasumi, "Baby baby, little mutant baby!" they chanted as they danced around in a circle around Kasumi. The small pink mutant cowered in fear, crouching down and covering her ears as not to hear their words any more, tears falling down her cheeks as she silently prayed for her papa to come and save her from this nightmare.

359 words ft. kasumi okino The cat's tail stopped its intrigued twitching when he heard the human girls. Packs were supposed to protect their members. This wasn't right, or natural. In the feline's limited understanding of schools, he knew that there were packs of children divided into rooms. Unless this was a fight between rival packs?
Kuranosuke, personally, had no pack, but something felt strange about the dance the human girls did around the pink girl. It felt wrong. Kuro was already growling when he scrabbled under the fence, his claws kicking at the dirt. Where was this girl's pack? Why weren't they defending one of their own?
"Is that a cat?" one of the girls asked, stopping in their song-and-dance. The others stopped, too, and looked. Kuro puffed-up, his back arching, and a growl emanated from him.
"It's a cat."
"What's his problem?"
They weren't moving. Kuro broke into a dead sprint, the growl metascizing into snarls.
Sure, he was just a cat, but he was an angry cat. The girls scattered, shrieking in alarm. Kuro stopped, expecting them to run, but the girls halted a few meters off.
"It's rabid!" one of the girls insisted.
They were leaving. Kuranosuke charged at them again, this time swiping at them with his claws. That time, the girls scattered for real. Kuro's growling did not subside until he was sure they would not come back. Humans were awful. Really awful.
The cat finally turned to the pink one. He brushed against the fence as he wandered back-- couldn't let her think he was too interested after all. Because he wasn't! He got within a meter of the girl, a little curl forming at the tip of his tail. And then he laid in the dirt with a soft *whump!*, tilting his head near upside-down to look at her, belly-up. See? Nice kitty.
He didn't want the pink one to be afraid of him, and he wanted to get her scent to see if the doll was hers, so the cat offered an inquiring, "Mrrrrrp?"
Kuro rolled once in the dirt, facing away from her, and then rolled back to face her again.

Kasumi trembled in fear as the girls danced around her, staying in her smaller form until she heard screaming coming from the girls. She slowly opened her tear filled eyes and saw an angry black cat hissing at them and running after them. Would the cat charge at her too? Kasumi fell onto the ground and crawled back away from the hissing cat, not wanting to get attacked by him. Although she was scared, it seemed the cat had no interest in her but instead the girls who had tossed Aki over the fence. Was it...was it protecting her? Kasumi blinked and wiped the tears from her already puffy eyes, watching as the girls ran off and the cat head back towards the fence. Maybe she was just making things up, perhaps they were mean to the kitty too and that's why it attacked. "E-Ehh?" she softly said to no one in particular, watching the languid movements of the black cat that had appeared from the other side of the fence.
For a few seconds, Kasumi made eye contact with the cat, her blue orbs looking into the cat's own unique ones. Se watched as the cat flopped down onto its back, laying in the grass. Kasumi watched the cat as it looked back at her, did he want to be pet? With slow movement, Kasumi sniffled and slowly made her way over to the cat, not getting too close in case the cat might hurt her too. "P-Papa said....not to play with strays...but you helped me...does that mean you're a good kitty?" Kasumi asked softly, getting just a bit closer to the cat, hesitantly holding out her fingers, still afraid the cat might scratch or bite her. She had to keep her distance, what if the cat did have something like the girls said? Was it just them making silly things up? A cat that saved her couldn't be all that bad...right?

307 words ft. kasumi okino When the pink child looked at the cat, Kuro closed his yellow-green eyes, basking in the sun. The girl approached, and Kuranoske lifted his head attentively, the tip of his tail flipping this way and that. She hunched down, extending her hand as she spoke. That was enough encouragement for him. Kuranoske rolled to his feet, closing the distance between the two of them. His tail was high and happy as he approached. The girl seemed apprehensive, understandably. Kuro was, after all, a stray. But he had a little red bowtie, and that had to count for something right.
Kuro touched his pink nose to the girl's pink fingertips, sniffing the hand inquiringly. She certainly smelled like the doll. After a few careful sniffs, he rubbed his cheek against the outstretched hand-- then the other cheek-- then back to the first cheek, and he bumped up beneath the girl's hand, hoping that she'd pet his back, before he flopped over in the dirt again.
"Mrrp," the black cat trilled, purring up a storm. It was definitely her, the one who owned the doll. Papa must be very protective. For of all the people willing to pet the cat, little girls were the most common. The yellow-green eyes, irises only slits in the bright light of day, lingered on the pink child.
"Mrrp," Kuro insisted.
He could probably talk to her. The other kids seemed to be leaving her alone. The grown-ups wouldn't believe her if she said a cat had spoken to her. But she was already wary of him as it was. Kuranoske was in no hurry to lose this newfound friend. So instead, he invited pets. He rolled onto his back again, belly-up.
"Mr-ew!" he said, a little more forcefully. He was a young kitty, so his meow was still quite small.

As she slowly lifted her hand towards the black cat, she watched him spring up to his feet, causing her to falter slightly, almost putting her hand back down as the cat approached her. Was he going to hurt her? She softly gasped as she felt his cold nose against her hands, realizing that he wouldn't hurt her, he was trying to get closer to her. Feeling the softness of his fur against her hand made the once crying girl softly smile, liking how soft this stray kitty was. "So soft," she said quietly, watching with a smile as Kuro rubbed himself up against her hand, nuzzling into her palm to show his affection to the girl. Soft giggles left the girl's lips, her fins on the sides of her head wiggling just a bit as she let Kuro nuzzle into her hand.
She gently pet the cat as he walked underneath her hand, allowing her to pet him as she so pleased. "Warm kitty," she said, feeling the sun reflect from his dark coat, making it warm to the touch. She was a bit saddened when he rolled back on the ground, presenting his belly to her. Did that mean she could pet his tummy? She stared into the kitty's eyes, her hand gently reaching out and touching the cat's tummy, not moving it in case she needed to pull it away if the kitty didn't like it. If he did like the pets, she would slowly rub his tummy, her tiny hand running along the black expanse of his stomach. "Pretty kitty," Kasumi said, the small smile not leaving her face as she admired the black cat in front of her. It was as if he was trying to communicate with her, causing another small chuckle to leave her lips. "Meow meow," she said, her fins and tail wiggling a little as she carefully played with the kitten. She had forgotten about Aki in that moment, too preoccupied with the cat to remember her lost friend.

246 words ft. kasumi okino Kuro relished the attention, his pure only magnifying as the girl complimented him. He was very soft, wasn't he? And pretty. It was nice of the girl to notice. As Kuro looked at her from his prone position, the girl took this as an invitation to pet the tummy. N-no! The cat rolled to his feet almost immediately, brushing his side against the girl's approaching hand. No tummy.
It was a mistake that was easily forgiven. This girl at least warranted being claimed by the cat, so Kuro trotted to her and twined around her legs, looking towards the fence. It was easy, in the fog of pets and praise, to forget the original objective: find the owner of the invader.
Kuro looked up at the girl, who was meowing at him, and he responded with a, “Meeeewww,” of his own. He scampered to the hole in the fence, glancing back before once again giving a pitiful, “Meeeewww.”
Maybe she didn't understand. Maybe she'd leave if he went through the fence, and then the intruder would be forever lost. Kuro scrabbled through the hole beneath the fence, decently big enough for a little girl, and then he looked back. This was a serious gamble.
“Follow me!” the cat insisted. Given his diminutive size, his voice was even younger sounding than he really was, perhaps even younger than Kasumi, “I find your friend! Follow!”
He could carry it back, sure, but he didn't want her to leave.

It was nice to play with this kitty, he wasn't mean, he was quite nice. Kausmi couldn't help but enjoy herself as she pet it's soft fur. Although as she was petting him, she made the mistake of petting his tummy. Seeing the cat jump to his feet made Kasumi step back a little, did she do something to upset him? Did she hurt him. "I-I'm sorry Mr. Kitty..." she said but was quickly forgiven as the kitty came back to her and brushed his back up against her hand. Kasumi's fear turned to relief knowing she didn't hurt her new feline friend.
Kasumi stood up and watched as Kuro moved in between her legs, brushing up against her stocking covered legs. Kasumi chuckled, feeling his soft hair tickling the tops of her knees that weren't covered by her socks. "T-That tickles kitty," she said, trying to hold in her laughter. Soon enough, the slight tickling was over and Kuro went back over to the hole in the fence, causing the curious axolotl girl to follow him. Did he have to go back home now? Was his home on the other side of the fence? She watched as Kuro turned back to her and meowed, as if trying to tell her something. "I'm...I'm sorry. I don't understand what you need Mr. Kitty," Kasumi said with a frown, wishing she could help Kuro since he had helped her.
Kasumi watched as Kuro slipped through the hole in the fence, easily making his way to the other side. Kasumi crouched down and locked eyes with the cat once more, hearing words come out of his mouth. This cat...could talk? She had never met a cat who talked before, then again, she hadn't met most of the strange and wonderfully different people that inhabited this town. Perhaps he was like her...but only a cat. As she was getting lost in thought, Kasumi thought it would be best to respond lest the other get angry. "A-Ah ok Mr. Kitty!" Kasumi said a bit frantically, trying her best to crawl through the hole even if she wasn't supposed to. She hoped that no one had noticed. Wait...find her friend? Did he mean he would help her find Aki?! "You know where Aki is? She isn't lost?" Kasumi spoke up, asking the kitty if he did indeed know where she was lost.

210 words ft. kasumi okino Kuro's tail was high and fluffed with anxiousness, waiting for some visceral reaction. Most people ran or yelled or called him names. The girl... didn't. She agreed to it, wriggling under the fence along with him.
"Not Mr. Kitty!" Kuranosuke insisted, "I am Kuro!"
He sat and surveyed the pink girl, his tail whipping wildly about. She wasn't running from him! Or yelling! Or throwing things. This was good. Most would consider the flicking tail to mean that the cat was angry. But Kuro, quite frankly, was excited.
"Yes!" Kuro confirmed, "The Aki fell on my head, from the sky! The Aki attacked me in my sleep!"
He walked to the girl again, sniffing at her stockings. Now she smelled like dirt, rather than Kuro. That wouldn't do. Kuro rubbed his cheek against her leg, the rest of his body following. There. Now she smelled like Kuro again. She was, after all, his honorary person, and therefore she needed to smell like him.
"I know it is the Aki, because it smells like you," the cat insisted, reverberating with purr, "... follow!"
He got up from his seat upon the ground, trotting down the dirt path.
"I will take you to the Aki."

Oh, so this cat had a name? If he had a name, did that mean he had an owner? "Is Kuro lost? Did Kuro loose his family? Did your family give you your bowtie?" Kausmi asked, remembering the small black cat had a red bow tied around his neck. She grew a little sad at the potential idea of him being separated from his family. The thought of her not being with Mosa made her more sad, not wanting something bad like that to happen. As they crawled under the fence, it seemed they landed in a tall patch of grass, Kuro stopping and turning behind himself to look at Kasumi. Kasumi stopped as well and stared back at Kuro, wondering if he did indeed have a home that he belonged to.
Before she got her answer, however, Kuro had told the axolotl girl where he had seen Aki. From his view, Aki landed on top of him, falling from the sky. This must have been when those girls had taken Aki from her and tossed her over the fence. She hoped Aki was alright. If she had any cuts or bruises, Kasumi would make sure to wash her friend off and patch her up good. She did like playing pretend doctor with Aki but would be a real doctor if need be. "Aki didn't mean to attack you. Aki was taken from me by some not so nice people. They threw Aki over the fence and Aki must have landed on you by accident. I'll tell her to apologize when we find her," Kausmi said, her voice a bit somber, saddened that Aki was taken from her in the first place.
The mutant girl watched with her large blue eyes as Kuro came over to her once more, sniffing her stockings, they did get a bit dirty from the dirt. Hopefully her teacher wouldn't get mad and hoped papa would wash them when she got home from school later. The pink girl softly chuckled once more when Kuro rubbed up against her legs, tickling her a bit. She wiggled her fins as Kuro rubbed his soft fur against the girl's equally soft skin, not as soft as Kuro's fur though. Kasumi listened as Kuro explained he knew where Aki was because she smelled like Kasumi. Did Kasumi have a certain smell? She hoped it wasn't a bad one. Clearing the minor thought from her head, she softly nodded in response as Kuro asked her to follow him once more, heading to where Kuro believed Aki to be.

250 words ft. kasumi okino The cat trotted ahead of the girl, periodically pausing to look back to make sure she was following. The girl asked nosey questions that set his ears back slightly. Kuranosuke could be petulant when it came to questions about his first home.
“Not lost,” Kuro insisted, “I'm on an adventure. This is my bowtie.”
So he could be a little petulant when his origins were brought up… the cat led the girl down a twisting dirt path, past a murky and mostly stagnant pond. Kuro liked this place because of the dragonflies… they were fun chase, catch, and eat. The girl announced that she would make the Aki apologize.
“That's good.”
He left it at that as he wiggled under his bush, grasping the doll in his teeth. He wrestled it out, with minor struggling, and then left the creature prone in the dirt. The cat sat proudly beside it, closing his eyes disdainfully for the doll that had interrupted his nap.
“Is this the Aki?”
He licked his paw, awaiting the praise that being so helpful deserved. The the cat then smoothed the paw over his head, cleaning his fur. And idea struck him, and the kitty ceased the spontaneous bath to look at the pink girl.
"What is payment for the Aki? I did a good thing, there should be payment."
What the cat meant was, there should be payback. He had no need for money, since he stole most of what he needed rather than buy it.

So Kuro wasn't lost? Was he a stray cat? He said he was on an adventure, but what kind of adventure? "Are you having fun on your adventure?" Kasumi asked, curious to see if Kuro was doing alright without prying too much. Kasumi kept following the cat on the dirt path, walking past a small pond. They were getting a little far from the fence which made Kasumi a bit anxious. She hoped they could find Aki soon so she wouldn't get in trouble for being gone. The two soon came upon a small array of bushes, Kasumi watching as Kuro crawled under one bush as if going to retrieve something. Was this where Aki had landed? After a few moments, Kuro soon came back out of the bush with Aki in his mouth.
Kasumi's eyes lit up once she saw her dear friend again. "Aki! You're ok!" Kausmi said, gently taking Aki from Kuro and hugging her tight to her chest. "I'm...I'm so sorry that they hurt you. I'll be sure to put lots of band aids on where it hurts," Kasumi said talking to Aki. "Mr. K-...Kuro said you disrupted his sleep when you landed on him. I know you didn't mean to but can you please apologize to Kuro?" Kasumi asked the doll in her hands before turning her to face Kuro. It was silent for a few moments but Kasumi's face lit up, happy that Aki apologized in her own way.
The pink mutant girl looked down at the black cat and smiled a soft smile, "Thank you for finding Aki and giving her back. I don't know what I would do if I really lost her," Kasumi said, reaching out to gently pet the cat's head once more. Kasumi froze a bit when Kuro asked for payment. "E-Eh?" Did she have to pay the cat for finding Aki? She didn't have any money on her, causing the girl to get a bit nervous and shake a little. What would a cat even do with money? "I....I don't have any money to give you...I'm...I'm sorry. I-I don't know how to pay you back," Kasumi said, starting to get a bit teary eyed. She didn't know what to do, all she could d was hug Aki tighter to her, hoping that her friend could calm her down.

156 words ft. kasumi okino Kuro pressed his head against the girl's extended hand, rubbing his face and whiskers against her pink palm. He had decided that he liked this pink girl immensely, even if her Aki interrupted his nap. After all, she'd made the Aki apologize. At the mention of repayment, the girl began to tremble and tear-up, declaring that she had no money to offer.
“I don't want money!” the cat protested, “Money is for people. People buy things. I am a cat.” And cats did not buy things. Kuro got up from his seated position, and wrapped around Kasumi's legs once again.
“I like food and pretty things,” Kuro explained, “But mostly food. Do you or the Aki have food?”
He tilted his spring-green eyes up at the girl, reverberating with a winsome purr, “I am very hungry. Food is a very good reward.”
His tail whipped around in wild excitement, hoping the girl had food to share.

The mutant girl sniffled and rubbed at her eyes, trying not to cry in front of her feline friend. Oh? He didn't want money? How would she repay him then? What could she get a cat? Kasumi watched with slightly teary eyes as Kuro maneuvered his way through Kasumi's legs once more, ticking her thighs and making her softly smile, trying not to laugh. Kuro soon said he enjoyed food and things that were pretty. Would a cat like a drawing? Hearing Kuro ask if she had any food, Kausmi thought hard and remembered the lunch that her papa has packed her. They had tuna and rice last night for dinner and she had some in her lunch along with the other things her papa had packed for her. "Ah! Papa made my lunch today and he put tuna inside. Would that be ok? Do you like tuna Kuro?" the pinkette asked, sniffling once more to get the sadness out f her system.
"Although, my lunchbox is back at school where we were before. Can you lead us back that way?" Kasumi asked, holding onto Aki just a bit tighter. She wasn't sure if she could get back on her own, not quite sure how she managed to get to this spot. If Kuro found her once, she was sure he could find his way back to where he found Kausmi. Kasumi reached down and gently pet Kuro, liking the way he was so affectionate to her. She especially liked the way he purred, giving her a clear sign that he liked it.

212 words ft. kasumi okino Kuro waited patiently, hoping in his heart of hearts that the pink child had food. He was always hungry, but right now he was especially hungry, particularly because he was thinking about food. The girl seemed deep in thought about the cat's request, and then something seemed to dawn-on her.
"I like tuna!" the cat confirmed, an excited twitch creeping into his tail, "That is okay! Very okay! Tuna! Tuna is good!"
"Yes! Back to school! Back to tuna!" the cat proclaimed cheerfully, trotting in the direction from whence they'd come. He may have been going a bit more quickly than before, but he was very excited.
The black cat expertly picked his way over the dirt trail, and back to the chain-link fence, where he wriggled through the hole, and turned to wait for his new pink friend.
"I am Kuro, what are you?" Kuro asked, as the girl drew nearer to the fence. What he meant to say was "who" are you, but this wasn't a conversation that he often got to have. He waited for the girl to squeeze her way back under the fence, and then he began to follow her across the yard, trotting beside her.
"Tuna, tuna, tuna," he chanted eagerly, his tail never once lowering.
