It’s been a long time coming. You’ve seen me shill it everywhere I go. Now it’s finally starting! Welcome to the first ever UA football thread!
As you can guess, in this thread we will be playing a simple friendly match of football against a team of NPCs. It will be 7vs7 football, and will be played quirkless; mutation quirks are free to join, you just have to DM me on Discord so we can figure out stuff such as if tails count as handballs or not, and unless your character doesn’t have arms and legs, they shouldn’t be barred from playing. If we have less than seven players, we will be filling the other slots with NPCs. For this thread, we will be playing two half-times 6 rounds each. Not all seven players will post every round; see the rules below.
A quick precision on the NPCs we will be playing: while they will be indeed NPCs, I do not intend for them to be one-off NPCs. The idea is to eventually play matches against others hero schools, and the characters I will be making for this thread in particular will likely show up for other events such as the sports festival or provisional license exams. If you would like to tie some of these NPCs to your characters and organize some plots outside of football threads, don't hesitate to DM me!
I will address quickly why I am not doing quirk football: that was my original intention, but as soon as I started pitching the idea and thinking about it deeper, I realized that the rules of football never accounted for things such as earthbenders putting walls in front of goal, and anti-play situations were gonna arise. As such, I have decided to try quirkless sports first to get a hang of how to make sports thread work and be fun for everyone before worrying about inventing a new ball game entirely.
I’ve been thinking about it for a few months now and I believe I have found a simple rule system that is easy to both understand and put into practice that you will find below. For this first game, I will play both the NPCs (aka the opposite team) and Darren, which is certainly not ideal; I ask you all to trust in my impartiality and that it’s not my style to blow my own character’s horn. The aim of these threads is to make everyone participate and have a good time, after all -- just like any other RP thread!
So without further ado, please find the rules in the spoiler below. If you wish to sign-up, simply drop a post with your character’s preferred position, knowing that we will be rather flexible with those anyway (and as you can see, we already have a few people interested!). I hope everyone will have fun and that we can make more of these threads in the future, and that it might inspire others to organize their own sports thread for basketball, baseball and the likes. Enjoy!
Current roster:
- Daimon Darren (striker)
- Kirk Bluster (?)
- Elise von Eisenberg (midfielder)
- Tetsuko Shindou (goalkeeper)
- Igarashi Ryuusei (?)
(if we end up with more than seven players, we can adjust the team sizes or sub people in and out during the thread)

Rules:
The opposite team will be played by a GM, and the field will be divided into thirds: defensive third (where your goal is), middle third and attacking third (where the opponents goal is). Here is a visual representation of the thirds:
Posting order will be organized as such:
On offense, the team can make as much as three posts before they have to hand the reins over to the GM. However, if someone attempts to advance by a third (crossing from defensive third to middle third, or from middle to attacking) with a pass or a dribble, it goes back to the GM. Back passes don't have this limitation, so you're free to use them without the team's turn ending (aka passing the ball from middle to defensive third, or from attacking to middle)
Whoever makes the three (or less) team posts is up to the team to decide, and must be decided in advance. We will be making a Discord group chat to decide these things.
As you can see, this system relies a lot on communication between the team and with the GM. The GMs role is to provide a fair challenge and to give the team members moments to shine; they should not be considered an opponent but a storyteller here to help you develop your characters, and conversely, the GM should not attempt to crush the player team mercilessly. Don't hesitate to contact your GM to figure out a plan for the next round! Once again, the aim is not to trick each other with vague posts, but to develop cool character moments.
A secondary role of the GM is to ensure that the team makes its players participate; for example, if the same two players make most of the posts, the opponents could start marking them tightly, making scoring easier for other players. Football is a team sports where pretty much anyone can score or help out in defense given the opportunity. In the words of Johan Cruyff, “The striker is the first defender, and the goalkeeper is the first attacker.”
This system also allows people to play as much of the match as they want: you might only be posting twice in the entire thread, or you could be participating in most actions and rounds depending on your motivation, just like in a real team. You can also be subbed out or subbed in if you want to join in the middle of it, or if IRL engagements are keeping you away and you wish to pull out.
