Rin-san, I'm sorry for this being so sudden, but we need to meet. Please, it's about Elise. When can we talk? - Tetsuko Shindou It was the first message she'd sent directly to Rin Kurama in some time. Things hadn't exactly been quite clear enough between them all for Tetsuko to act casually around Rin, and nothing much had developed to change that. Nonetheless, the Shindou girl had sent out that blunt message barely an hour after receiving the details on Elise's condition. It had been done without hesitation and without much thought, something much stronger than a calm and rational mind driving the swordswoman at present. It was something as simple and primal as a desire for survival, though not her own. Instead, she was merely trying to protect something much more abstract, something that was embodied by the comatose Elise von Eisenberg. Tetsuko couldn't let the last bastion of her past fade away, even if the present had become so confusing and twisted, she couldn't allow that which was certain and safe to be lost... Fortunately, Elise wasn't letting herself fade away either. At the hospital, Tetsuko had discovered, with not a hint of uncertainty, that Elise was still fighting. From within the darkness that the vile Nick Cross had plunged her into, Elise was struggling and climbing her way out, displaying a warrior's spirit that Tetsuko could not deny. In some ways, she was taking this whole thing a lot better than Tetsuko was, so what a cruel and twisted fate that the one who had to find Elise's true savior was the single person who couldn't do a damn thing to save her. Tetsuko Shindou, the broken and dulled blade who'd been relied upon time and time again, only to fail to protect the one she held dear at every turn. The swordswoman balled up her fists in frustration, breathing in deeply to steel her nerves. Paradoxically, she was starting to loathe herself for all the self-loathing she put herself through. Pitying oneself seemed truly pathetic, particularly when she had no right to feel sorry for herself for her own failures. The young Japanese girl continued to focus on her breathing, doing her damndest to maintain that warpath-like state that she'd taken on in efforts to fight for her past. Her chest heaved steadily, her hands upon her knees as she sat deathly still upon a bench in Tokyo Park, the place where she'd chosen to meet Rin. It seemed as good a place as any to convene and let the blood-wielding girl know what she had to do. Perhaps, however, it had been almost subconscious that Tetsuko had chosen here of all places... The same place that was tied so tragically to the events that had caused this whole thing to unravel in the first place. Rin Kurama and Nick Cross... Their visages floated through Tetsuko's tired and addled mind, doing little to help the confusion and strange unease she was feeling. Even Elise's smile couldn't put her at ease, as it was a smile she'd failed entirely to protect. Not just the smile of her lover, though Tetsuko could barely call herself something as kind and warm as that when she'd been so horribly hesitant, so cruelly unreceptive during their relationship. It was the smile of the girl who'd been by Tetsuko's side for the majority of years, the smile of a bright past, the smile of a pleasant future, the smile of an innocence now lost. A smile taken by Thunder Shock, by Nick Cross, by Tetsuko's incompetence, by a cruel world, perhaps even... Breathing. She scolded herself again and told herself to focus on breathing. Twisted thoughts would do little to help her here, she had only one thing in mind, and that was to no longer act idly in her present. Tetsuko wouldn't allow Elise to rely on her any further, but that didn't mean she wouldn't fight to save the life of the girl who loved her. Contacting Rin Kurama, convincing her that Elise was fighting, that she needed to do what she could to save Elise, that she could do more than Tetsuko ever could... Well, that was the first step. Glancing around the park, Tetsuko hoped she would be arriving soon. She couldn't waste any more time, and she didn't want to deal with the conflicting feelings this girl brought up for too long...

WORD COUNT: TAGGED: TAGGED: Fluffy To Loathe. Defined as the feeling of intense disgust, dislike or disapproval. In some cases a mixture of all of the different possibilities. Words that were typically applied extrovertedly, directed towards the outside world, ones surroundings. For some, like Rin and Tetsuko Shindou, said loathing was far more often directed inwards. There were so many things that Rin could be disgusted with in herself. The fact that the quirk she wielded, that was part of her, was of such a disgusting nature. The fact was that blood was so often seen as something evil, something to stray away from, something to avoid. There were several who fainted when even remotely exposed to the substance, despite it being so vital in their survival. In middle school, the girl had often been told that her dreams of changing the world into a better place were malplaced. That there wasn't a single soul in the world who would depend on her. That there wasn't a single one that would accept her as she was. It was a sentiment that was displayed in the world around her as well. Class mates were refusing to eat their bentos in her pressence, afraid that the blood witch had cursed or poisoned their meals. There had on occasion been songs. Burning the witch. Even the teachers seemed to fear or judge what was going on, leaving her very little respite. It was enough to make her feel unworthy of existing. It had taught Rin to keep quiet. To conceal her pressence whenever possible. To speak to no one. To view everyone around her as worth more than herself. That when others granted her, even negative communication, it was more than she deserved. At least they were willing to spend a little time on you!
Then there were the problems escalating at home. Economic situation having gone to hell and back, a heart broken in a thousand too many pieces. A man broken in far too many pieces. Pieces which a young girl, despite trying her best, had been unable to assist piecing back together. In some sense, it almost seemed that her father had wished to remain broken. That the pain he felt, alleviated some of his negative emotions towards himself. That the pain he felt, was easier to deal with than his thoughts... So Rin created her own world. A world lived between four walls and a locked wooden door. A world in which her only escape had been the litterature she could bring home from the libraries. A world that she filled with stories, with attaining knowledge through studying, through mathematics, logics. Rin, through a book of chess, through moving the chess pieces in accordance to what the books mentioned, escaped her lonely prison. Through the litterature, Rin had went on countless adventures. Seeing chess titans facing off to claim the title of ultimate grand master. Rin had sailed the seas, seeing foreign lands. Yet, no matter how much Rin traveled in these worlds, no matter which situation the girl viewed... Rin had always been alone.
In desperation, as if the girl knew that continuing such a life could only lead further into the darkness, Rin had dared to dream. Dared to dream that Yuuei could be the one chance she had at re-restablishing herself out into the world. Through the shattered pieces of her broken father, through the door, through the home she grew up in, she escaped. There were others like her out there. Others that wanted to show the world exactly how wondrous and fantastic quirks could be. Over time, the four walls which had been her entire world, had begun crumbling away. There were others, constantly passing by. Naoru-san, Yoruhi-kun, Jasmine-chan, Elise-chan, Shindou-chan, Ryuusei-kun, Maximillian-kun, Kanna-chan... The list was much, much longer. Individuals whom Rin enjoyed being around. A few of which Rin had grown attached too. They made her laugh. They made her smile. They made her feel like there was hope for the future after all...
Music Night had made those ideals incredibly difficult to hold onto. It had proved to Rin, that despite how wondrous and magical a setting might've been, humans were foolishly greedy. They wanted to take what they should not. They wanted to believe they had been abandonned, when they had not. Emotions drove them to insane decisions. Decisions that would lead Rin so deep into the dark, that for months, the girl wasn't sure she would ever see the light again... Nick Cross... However, those same individuals had come searching for her. Shouting her name, echoing into the thick veil of loneliness. They had refused to let her fade. They had grasped on, little by little, forcing the girl back into the light. There was still a long way to go. There was still a plethora of things Rin still needed to learn... but, despite what she may have thought, Rin had not ever been abandonned. The girl's friends were there for her, even when she had insisted on pushing them away. Even when Rin had insisted that the secrets she carried were too dark for them to deal with. How utterly foolish...
The consequence of pushing everyone away had been dire. A few nights ago, Elise Eisenberg had, despite every wrongdoing Rin had caused her, stepped in the way, when Nick had stretched his arms out to , once again, claim Rin as his prize. Elise Eisenberg had, despite how cruel and horrible Rin had been, done everything she could to protect her friend. Now the burgundy haired lass was in the hospital, beaten to a pulp by the monster whom Rin could not face. In that moment, Rin had fled. Out of fear. Out of pain, out of misery. Fled. Then like some coward, she had called Tetsuko Shindou and Jasmine Noir... Self loathing was in the air, shared between two experts in the field...
Rin knew. Rin instinctively knew that, with the words Nick Cross had said, Elise Eisenberg and Tetsuko Shindou both knew. They knew why Rin had been unwilling to speak. They knew the dark secret. They knew everything. So when a message appeared on Rin's phone, from none other than Tetsuko, Rin was confused. Despite everything that had happened, despite what Rin was responsible for, Tetsuko Shindou-san still wanted to meet...? It was about Elise-chan..?...
With quiet, soft steps, Rin approached the bench. Nervous, the raven haired female swallowed deeply. Quietly placing herself down onto the bench at Tetsuko-chan's side, without so much as uttering a word. Placing one hand on top of the other in her own lap, the girl scratched at her own skin, fidgeting with her hands. Even before they had shared a word, a sentence, the atmosphere was thick, awkward, unpleasant... Guilt was a terrifying drug, that one quickly became addicted to when feeling inadequate.
Rin might've no longer been alone, but she felt she deserved to be. These wondrous, fantastic people, didn't deserve to suffer in her pressence.

The past was a funny thing. It didn't exist, not truly, outside of the minds of those who'd lived it. Yet within that fragile existence, within that frail and delicate being, it wielded incredible influence. Some loathed their past. They feared it, they hated it, or simply wished to escape it. Tragedies and pain colored the path they'd taken to where they were now, and for some, it seemed like the only way to continue forward was to turn their eyes away from the path they'd already walked. For some, the past was powerful, but its existence weak enough to still be abandoned, ignored, discarded and moved on from. They took the meaningful parts from it, the lessons learned and bonds forged, and moved forward, leaving the pain behind.
Some people were not quite as wise with how they handled the past. Some held onto it, not unwillingly, but instead allowing it to shackle them, looking past the dirt and grime and becoming enamored with the rare, glistening memories that were intertwined with that path. And then, rather than taking the precious and important parts, they clung to the entirety of their past, of their origins, afraid to let go and unwilling to believe an uncertain future was worth being free of their shackles. It was a damned fate, to resist change, to struggle against the weathering of time. Whether it was more damned than discarding one's past entirely, who could say?
As she sat waiting in the calm Tokyo Park, Tetsuko knew without a debt where she stood along that line. To let the past slip away, to understand it's worth, or to hold onto it so tightly that your knuckles turned white. She couldn't but wonder where the other figures in this bizarre tragedy fell on this spectrum. Rin, Elise, even Nick Cross... How had their pasts defined them? How did the desire to make the most of one's past bring them to this point... Had Tetsuko herself suffered for turning her eyes away from the future, with all its uncertainty and doubt, or had she not held on tightly enough to the past she could not lose?
Her addled thoughts were broken by the sound of footsteps piercing through the still air, soft yet present as Tetsuko's whole body tensed up, and one of this tragedies more central character's made their arrival. Everything Tetsu had thought she might say to Rin, completely exited her mind, and all the Shindou girl could think of was what she'd heard that night. Nick Cross... A boy Tetsuko knew next to nothing about, a boy she was only aware was a former student of UA, had claimed Rin was his. He'd been the one to cause all of Rin's suffering, as said by Elise herself. What exactly that meant... Tetsuko could only imagine. The dark secrets Rin Kurama had been hiding had come to the light, as did the meaning behind her flight that night, though the swordswoman... Didn't want to yet assume the worst. She knew everything she needed to. It was all laid out, so simply before her.
Tetsuko had not been able Elise's actions at music night. Tetsuko had not been able to find Rin quickly enough after hearing herself and Nick so close by. Tetsuko had not been able to stop the suffering that was to follow, from both her and Elise. Tetsuko had not been able to get there in time to prevent Nick from hurting Eli too.
Every single failure came back to her, back to her inability to act with any agency in the present, leaving her sitting idly by while her past was torn apart before her. Guilt washed over Tetsuko, who was deathly silent and still as Rin approached. The swordswoman was leaned back against the bench, her hands on her thighs in what seemed to be a dignified position, but was instead one of restraint, of solitude. She was shackled by the weight of what she had to do, the weight of what she hadn't done. Tetsuko's loathing wasn't all inwardly directed, and some smaller part of her wanted to blame it on another, to make things so much simpler by giving her an enemy she need only cut down. Yet, things weren't that simple, and no amount of wishful thinking could make them so.
Rin was sat beside Tetsuko soon enough, the breeze picking up for a moment as they sat in complete silence, Tetsuko's mouth opening briefly but closing quickly. All the planning she'd done, the warpath she'd been on, it all faded away in a matter of moments. What right did she have asking Rin for help? What right, after her incompetence had brought all this ruin around them... For a moment, Tetsuko's body twitched with unease, and she felt like fleeing again, until a simple fact crossed her mind. This was not about her.
Tetsuko didn't deserve to ask for Rin's help.
Elise, on the other hand, deserved all the help she could get.
The swordswoman inhaled, exhaled, and spoke. "Thank you for coming, Rin-san." Her words were quiet, wrought with conviction, yet also fragile, on the verge of falling apart. Tetsuko paused with each sentence, doing her damndest to stay composed. "Thank you... For calling me, the other night. I'm sorry, I... I didn't... I couldn't... Get there in time. To... Stop him." She inhaled deeply again, struggling to keep it all together. She couldn't cry, no pity or sorrow for her, not when Elise was still fighting so close by. Tetsuko Shindou had to be the warrior, she deserved no other role.
"There's nothing more we need to say about that night. I won't... I won't ask anything..." Tetsuko could worry about finding Nick Cross later, for now, there were greater concerns, and she saw no point in rushing to the heart of the matter. "What I called you here for is... Elise... She..."
Another deep breath. Her lip quivered, her entire body felt like it would collapse, but she held on.
"She's in a coma."
Tetsuko didn't leave it there, however, knowing how those words alone had hurt her... And knowing the cruel hope she'd recieved later. The cruel hope she'd now mercilessly share.
"... But she's fighting. Hard. I just... Need your help..."

WORD COUNT: TAGGED: TAGGED: Fluffy It was remarkable how two females, doing absolutely nothing aside from sitting quietly on a bench, not even sharing words between one another, could instigate a tension that was this intense. They were both the same in that regard. Capable of blaming themselves for practically any travesty that came to their lives. It was strange how often, especially recently, they had been finding the company of the other neccessary. Rin calling out to Tetsuko when Elise had been in danger. Now Tetsuko was mirroring that exact sentiment. In the same ephemeral moment, where Tetsuko tensed, twitched, almost like a deer caught in the headlights, wishing to flee the situation, Rin felt an uncomfortable chill rush down her spine. It was like a cold hand wrapping itself around her neck, constricting the girl's ability to speak, breathe. It was uncomfortable. It was incredibly uncomfortable. Perhaps coming here, with all the emotions that had gotten in the way, was a mistake. Frankly, if the wording from Tetsuko when she had requested a meetup had been any different, Rin would've likely responded with a no. The matter of the fact was, that Tetsuko had made it out so that Elise Eisenberg was the focus of their meeting. Specifically, Rin was predispositioned to listen, as the girl blamed herself for what had happened at the Halloween party. It had been her own stupid foolishness that had gotten Elise involved with him. Taking a deep breath, Rin was going to get the conversation started. Anything at all that could dispell this suffocating atmosphere would do, even if it wasn't related to why they two were meeting....Instead, Rin was slapped with the absolute last set of words that she had expected from the silver haired female. Thank you for coming. There were many things Rin would've expected to hear. Somewhere, the raven haired female had prepared herself to withstand a complete guilt trip. Because you cowardly left Elise to stand alone, she's crippled irrepairably! There were so many horrible sitautions that Rin had been prepared for. Not for even the slightest moment had Rin been prepared for Tetsuko Shindou-chan to be apologetic and thankful. Rin's fingers joined her palms, as her knuckles turned white from squeezing. "...How can you be thankful to me, after what I did, Tetsuko-san?... You should be furious with me! The one you love, I left her there alone, to contend with that... that monster. Because I was afraid. Because I was a coward. Nick only hurt Elise because of me. Don't you dare blame yourself for my mistakes! Don't you dare apologize!" It had been spat out in an emotional, almost insulted fashion. It was clear from the very sharp reaction, that Rin found it lunacy that Tetsuko-chan would blame herself for what had happened, when Rin was the one clearly responsible. It made her even more frustrated with herself. Taking a few short, quick breaths, Rin managed to force it to the back of her mind. Whether the raven haired female or the silver haired warrioress was to blame, didn't matter... It would not change the news that Elise was in a coma.Rin lowered her head, looking down, following the legs of the bench they were sitting on with her eyes. In summer, ants would've been climbing up there to get food. The life of an ant, simply moving forwards following instincts. Human lives were far more difficult. The emotional outburst earlier had subsided almost immediately. The girl had become cold, with the next few things Tetsuko had mentioned. A cold that would be familiar. It was how Rin had been when the two girl's had first met and interacted. Though, compared to that frigid wasteland, Rin's current cold was... significantly less intense. "...You already know what happened that night... your eyes told me you know." It was the only reply Rin gave to that part of the conversation. There wasn't a need for further pity. Nor a need to dig further into that particular evening. It was something Rin had mostly recovered from. At least, recovered enough to return to life. Functioning in her everyday tasks. Still, Tetsuko could likely sense how the emotions that Rin had been portraying simply vanished. Like the walls had come up around her... "Elise-san is in a coma... Do they know if she'll wake up?... What, uh... Would you expect that I could do?... The doctors are probably far more skilled than myself..." Rin explained in a soft tone. With how much Rin had to blame herself for, the lack of selfesteem likely wasn't surprising. Even so, the sapphire blue eyes slowly rose from the ground to meet with Tetsuko-chan's eyes. If.. despite all of this... Tetsuko would still ask for Rin's help... Then the least Rin could do was listen to the request....Rin would always listen to any prayer, no matter whom it came from.

Post by Tetsuko Shindou on Dec 6, 2018 20:37:22 GMT -4
A burden was defined, in its most basic and literal terms, as merely being a load of significant weight that one carried. That 'weight' was what defined it. Rin Kurama and Tetsuko Shindou, were, conversely, people defined in many ways by the burdens they carried... By the 'weight' they carried. The weight of their own guilt, above all else, that dictated to each of them that there was no one else to blame for the events of that night but themselves. That mutual desire to carry the weight of their burden alone, it led to some... Interesting conflicts of opinion between the two. It was because they were so similar in that regard, that their own independent perspectives could not coexist, yet at the same time, they each understood one another's actions in no small way...
Indeed, just like Rin had only arrived because of the topic of conversation, that being Elise von Eisenberg herself, the same lone reason Tetsuko had been able to call Rin for help was also that kind Germanic girl, and because of Tetsuko's own failures that night. The swordswoman was painfully aware of the fact that she did not deserve to ask Rin for help, that to do so was an incredible arrogance, that it was asking for forgiveness and oversight that most would scoff at. Even doing it now disgusted her, the idea that Tetsuko Shindou had the gall and foolishness to seek help from someone she'd failed, just because the swordswoman herself was too inept to handle things alone... There were very few things as insulting to one's honor, yet just like Rin, Tetsuko had gone against that nature in favor of Elise. In favor, not of letting Tetsuko have the things she didn't deserve, but of giving Elise the things she did.
It was a one-track devotion to making up for her wrongdoings, to letting Elise live the life she deserved, free of her reliance on this useless knight, that let Tetsuko continue down her warpath to enlisting the help of others, even if she felt like running at times from her own mistakes... It was that warpath of hers that even let Tetsuko call-up the person she'd wronged in the past, that let Tetsuko carry on through the strange conflict that arose. Rin's brief, emotional outburst was followed by a brief silence from Tetsuko, whose expression remained unchanged, unconvinced. Elise... Had been right from the start, hadn't she? They really were alike...
"I'm sorry, Rin-san. I know... That maybe... I should be upset with you, for that, but... I'm not. You weren't the one that failed your responsibilities." Tetsuko uttered quietly, her voice fragile and impossibly resolute, her hands trembling lightly against her thighs as she spoke. "You aren't the one Eli has always been relying on... You're not the one who swore to protect her. You're not the one who let her call you her 'knight'." The swordswoman scoffed out that last sentence, as though the very idea now seemed entirely asinine. Her voice was growing tenser, more wrought with frustration as her eyes built up moisture. "It was Elise's decision that she step in... Not yours. Then, so many else ran, so... Short of blaming everyone... It's only right to blame the one fucking person who Elise... R-Relied on, to be there for her. I'm the one who failed my responsibilities." The profanity had quite a bite to it. from the lips of someone normally so upright and dignified. Tetsuko took a few moments, breathing deeply, gathering herself before she shook her head again, clarity prevailing.
"Sorry... It's not important... What we do now... Is." Tetsuko lied. The young swordswoman knew that night was still important, still a testament to her failure that she needed to remember. The Shindou girl only hoped she could move Rin's mind from it, and didn't seem any interested in discussing it further. There were far more important matters to intend to, while Tetsuko explained the situation to one of the few people who might be able to make it right. Though the Shindou girl wanted to keep what she'd figured about the music night vague, apparently her eyes gave it away... Blue like the sea, yet it seemed they could not conceal secrets nearly as well.
"...So they have..." Was Tetsuko's only response. The darkness of that secret was far too great to get into now, so Tetsuko refrained from saying anything more... Neither of them had anything more to say, after all. Though, the swordswoman had plenty to feel at the confirmation... Knowing now that these events had transpired, that they had created the Rin Kurama she'd met then... It only added to the 'burden' she carried. There was little more to it...
When Tetsuko finally got to the point of asking Rin for her help, the answer she received was about what she'd expected. It was only natural Rin would be skeptical about what she could do that trained professionals couldn't, that would be any teenager's response, Tetsuko would've thought. Yet, when those eyes met hers, Tetsuko knew that Rin... Could answer this request. So, with a resolution, Tetsuko stood from the bench, standing deathly still as she spoke to Rin.
"She's recovered from the wounds, the only problem is... They need to get blood flowing to her brain properly. It's not something... They can do easily. Not without outright controlling the blood." There was no use stepping around it. Tetsuko looked to Rin with pleading eyes, her request clearer than ever, yet she voiced it anyway, her voice full of desperation and regret. "Rin-san... I need you, with your Quirk, to help her wake up." The Shindou girl's face was contorted with turmoil, as she bowed deeply before the dark-haired girl. Her upper body practically at 90 degrees from her legs, in a gesture that could only be seen as begging. Forgoing her own honor, just for this one request...
"Please, Rin-san... Wake Elise up..."
