It had not taken them long. Honestly, Nick was impressed. He had expected to have had another week before they noticed his lack of contact at least. And to have sent someone to Japan already? Mother’s efficiency had chills surging down his spine. She had gotten better. Alarmingly so.
In his hand he brandished his phone, which still displayed the text that had started all of this by requesting his presence at an old warehouse by the docks. Of course the person texting had not outright called themselves a part of the Gifted Underground, but Nick was no fool. Who else would it be? He supposed there was Thunder and Amadeus, but Thunder had his ridiculous underground base to meet him at, and Amadeus his mansion. Not that he and Amadeus were on the best terms currently after what he had done to Susamu…
No, it had to be someone sent by Mother. He walked upright to exude confidence, despite how he twisted on the inside. Each step he took was more reluctant than the one before it. A voice screamed at him in his mind that he was a moron for actually following the directions given by the text, and he was inclined to agree. He was driven by his knowledge that conflict with the Underground for his failure was inevitable and it was best to just get it over with.
Who the hell could it be? He doubted highly that Mother herself would grace him with her presence; whoever she had sent was more than likely here to drag him back to England. Or just kill him. One of the two.
At last he arrived at his destination: an old, shabby abandoned warehouse. How charming. He glanced around: he saw no sign of anyone. The air was calm and still. Too much.
He was all too aware that walking right in was the stupidest possible thing he could do. He could walk right into a storm of gunfire, for God’s sake. So, instead, he crept low and slow towards the warehouse entrance, daring not even to breathe too loud. He waited a moment before ever so slightly peeking around and inside.

Learning he was being sent to Japan to locate Nick was, perhaps, the first time in years Goro had felt excited. Ever since Nick had almost killed him, Goro had been quite deliberately kept out of Nick's way by the Gifted Underground to minimize the chances of the bat trying to get his revenge. So choosing him for this job felt almost as if Goro had been given carte blanche to do whatever he wanted to Nick. The rational part of his brain said it was simply because he'd blend in best in Japan, but it's not like the Underground had specified he couldn't rough Nick up a bit while there.
But, now that he was actually seeing the bastard again, his excitement had disappeared entirely, replaced by a quiet resentment bubbling deep inside him. Goro remained silent and hidden, watching Nick's movements from his perch in the warehouse rafters. He cursed under his breath as Nick hesitated at the entrance. Part of him wanted to text him again, to taunt him into the warehouse itself, but Goro could tell that'd be just as likely to backfire on him. So instead he stayed where he was, hoping Nick would come to him first.

There was no sign of any life within. Obvious ambush is obvious, Nick thought to himself. Or was it just his paranoia? Maybe, but someone had texted him, so someone had to be in there, and the fact he could not see or hear anything had alarm bells ringing to say the least, even if the warehouse was dark. If they just wanted to talk, surely they would be standing in plain sight.
“Alright, I’m here,” he called into the gloom. “So you might as well come out and show yourself, ‘cause I know you’re there. If you don’t, I’m leaving. Stop trying to dick me around!”
As he spoke his body became even tenser than it had already been. He knew he was pushing it possibly talking to one of Mother’s best lackeys that way. He doubted she would have sent just anyone to Japan, after all. The disc-shaped growth on his back twitched and itched in anticipation. He slid his phone into his pocket and then slowly rose onto his feet and backed up a few steps, eyes not leaving the entrance for even a second.
“You hear me?” he cried. “I’m going to go now, whoever you are! Buh-bye!” He even added a mock-wave. He was not actually going to leave, but he would not play their game. That he wanted to make abundantly clear.

Goro rose to his feet as he listened to Nick yell into the warehouse. So, his plan had failed already, huh? He watched Nick back up a few steps before leaping down from the beam he'd been waiting on, hurtling straight towards Nick with a knife drawn. As he landed, he tried to slash at Nick's right arm. "I expected you to be in your Yuuei uniform. Did something happen that you're too ashamed to report, Nick?" He said, the helmet of his costume distorting his voice slightly. However, it wasn't distorted enough to make it unrecognizable.

Shit. Nick heard something rushing towards him at an alarming speed and reacted with only seconds to spare. As he jumped back he swore time slowed down allowing him to see the knife blade in excruciating detail as it just whisked past his body.
The person holding the knife was unlike anyone he had encountered before with their elaborate bat-themed costume. Their wings, though, sparked some familiarity in his mind, and while their voice had effects added to it by the suit it was clear enough to his ears…
“Goro?”
The recognition hit like a tank followed by a solid block of concrete to the face. “What the hell?”
Of course he could not see his attacker’s face because of his strange battle suit, but it was definitely his voice, something that was as impossible as flying naked through space and going for a swim in the sun.
“You’re supposed to be dead,” he cried in half-disbelief, half-outrage, completely ignoring Goro’s words to him. “I killed you myself!”
He could still see his bloody hands…
Goro then had been a teenager, trained by the Gifted Underground as Nick had been and then pitted against Nick in a battle to the death. The winner Mother would take on to forge into the Gifted Underground’s perfect solider, and would take on Mother’s surname of Cross to signify their status as her true ‘chosen one’. That had been him, obviously. He was sure Goro had not been moving as he had stood over his broken form victorious, so how the fuck was this happening?

Goro grunted quietly as he just missed Nick's arm. His irritation was quickly washed away by smug glee. The anger and confusion in Nick's voice was exactly what he'd hoped for. He took a moment before responding, wanting to commit Nick's expression to memory, and a smirk spread across his face, hidden behind his helmet.
"Yes, but you didn't do a very good job of it. Of course, I was badly injured, but the Underground saw no point in letting me die. Did you expect Mother would've told you I was alive, anyway? We'd just end up trying to finish what we'd started."
As he finished his sentence, he slashed forward again, this time aiming for Nick's chest, while trying to slap him in the face with one of his wings. "Which isn't what I'm trying to do right now. This is just punishment for not reporting in on time." Keeping his voice steady and calm was challenging, as looking into Nick's eyes made Goro's body hurt. Every scar and bruise that Nick had left on him was burning like they were fresh. No matter what he'd just said, not all of him was willing to let Nick leave alive. Part of his brain was screaming at him to get revenge, to finally prove once and for all that he IS stronger. But he wasn't going to do that. Mother wouldn't want him to.

Nick had never believed in ghosts. It was all superstitious nonsense to him, the ramblings of fools. So, that meant the being attacking him could be nothing other than the real deal, but his mind was having the hardest time processing this.
He had never had a choice in harming Goro the way he had – nor the children he had fought before him, who had not been nearly as fortunate. Goro was not innocent in that regard either; he had slain other children. It was what Mother had demanded of them. Survival of the fittest.
“Don’t act like you didn’t want to kill me back then,” he spat with raw venom in his voice. “We both know you would have!”
As for Goro’s words about not wanting to kill him right then in that moment, well, that was bullshit. Goro must have jumped at the chance to be the one Mother sent.
Speaking of jumping, Nick managed to leap out of the way of the blade again but did not react in time to avoid the wing. It smacked him across the face and stars spun in front of his eyes as he went crashing down.
He bared his teeth moments after landing, face smarting as white hot rage surged through him. Fine. If it was another beating he wanted, another beating he was going to get. Nick had been Mother’s champion for a reason, and it seemed certain bats needed a reminder of that. The disc-shaped growth on his back bulged out and spewed the biological black liquid that consumed his body and hardened into his armour. He was on his feet again within seconds, charging towards Goro and springing into a flying kick aimed right at him.

Goro had been one of the older children the Underground had taken in, so despite his Quirk not exactly lending itself to combat situations he had the advantage of age compared to the others. He’d had years to identify and adapt to his Quirk’s disadvantages, and had figured out how to weaponize it properly long before the children had been pitted against each other.
He’d never gotten along with any of the others very much, Goro had been a quiet kid and was usually either sound asleep or irritated and tired when anyone else was awake. The Underground didn’t exactly encourage them to socialize with each other, so he didn’t see the point in forcing himself to.
Despite this, it was hard to make himself hurt people he’d grown up around, that he’d seen since he was young. At first. By the time he and Nick were the only ones left, nothing was left but his self-preservation instincts.
“Shut up!” He yelled. Nick was right, and that made it harder to keep the hate out of his voice. “I should’ve killed you, too! I would’ve done a better job than you’re doing with Yuuei!” There wasn’t anything he could see to suggest what Nick could’ve done to warrant not reporting in, but Goro knew Nick must’ve fucked up somehow. He had to have. Nick must’ve fucked up so Goro can swoop in and punish him for it, and then he can finally prove his superiority to him.
His anger had distracted him, and he hadn’t noticed Nick’s armour growing or him springing into the air until Nick’s foot had already connected with his face. Goro crumpled to the ground in pain as his face burned in pain. The knife fell from his hand and bounced away as he brought his hand to his helmet.
He pushed himself up onto his knees and rushed to pick up his knife again, trying to push Nick away with his wings again. The hit to his head had left him shaky for the moment, and he couldn’t quite get to his feet yet.

Nick had screwed up. Big time. He had been sent to Japan to do one thing – spy on Yuuei – and he had allowed his feelings to ruin that. He was never going back there now, and what’s worse he would likely be a wanted man once Rin gave away what he had done to her. His mission had well and truly failed, leaving him to leech desperately off Nari with little idea what to do next.
Still, they would be ice-skating in Hell before he would admit any of this to Goro of all people.
He straightened up from his post-kick landing, revelling in the satisfaction of feeling his foot make contact with his idiot brother’s face. He let out a laugh of mocking amusement at the sight of Goro fumbling on the ground.
“That’s right,” he hissed. “Crawl around like the pathetic little bitch you are, Goro!”
He thrust an open hand in Goro’s direction. A slimy, pulsating black tendril as thick as a riding crop burst from his palm, extending about five metres. It could not move on its own beyond its involuntary twitches. He swung it towards Goro’s precious knife in an attempt to knock it further from his reach. As he did this an identical tendril burst from his other palm and he swung this one at Goro himself, though Goro’s wings made this slightly difficult.

The knife was just within Goro’s reach, and the pain had begun to fade. His fingers had almost closed around the knife’s handle once again when Nick’s taunting hit him like a second kick to the face, and the pain flared up again. Something as shameful as this, being reduced to crawling in front of Nick, made him want to die.
Then came Nick’s tendrils. Goro caught a glimpse of one shooting for him from behind his wing, but the pain made it hard to move in time to avoid it. Goro yelped as it whipped him, leaving a large cut down his right wing. The other tendril struck the hand now holding the knife, leaving another cut, but thankfully Goro was able to keep hold of the knife despite it.
He pushed himself off the ground, swaying slightly, and rushed forward, trying to dodge around Nick’s left side. His pace wasn’t exactly even, as the sudden movement of his wings was irritating the cut.
“Shut up!” He screamed as he ran at Nick. “You’re in no position to look down on me. You’re a failure!” The word ‘too’ went unspoken, but it hung in Goro’s mind. Nick should feel as much of a failure as he does, how dare he not admit it!

Nick was grateful Goro could not see him grimace behind his facemask. Goro was right; he had failed, and then some, which he already knew but even so every little reminder of it stung.
Not that Goro was any better, he told himself to stop the pain of his failure from getting to him too much in the heat of battle. Goro was such a failure he was supposed to be dead. The Gifted Underground had likely only kept him around out of pity, not that Nick had believed pity to be Mother’s style before, so she must have taken a lot of convincing. Somehow. Really, it was rather mind-boggling to him that Goro was there besides just that he was meant to have killed him.
Either way, he did not need this on top of all the other crap that had happened. No way in hell was he going to tell Goro anything – he just wanted the idiot bat gone.
“You should’ve stayed in England, Goro!” he snarled.
He rapidly retracted his tendrils and threw himself in his brother’s direction and exploded into a wicked flurry of rapid fire punches. Fist after fist flew with barely a chance to blink between them. He did not want to give Goro even the faintest sliver of a chance to react. He put everything he had into his assault, every ounce of rage. He just wanted to be left the hell alone!

Goro didn’t have any time to react before the first of Nick’s flurry of punches hit him square in the jaw. He stumbled back, and a following jab to the gut left him gasping for breath. Another to the chest. Yet another to the neck. Individual punches registered less and less as his whole body was wracked in pain.
Despite this, he managed to stay on his feet. His fist was tight around the handle of the knife now, tight enough that the handle was definitely cutting into his palm. Goro may be a coward, but failing to at least get information on why Nick hadn’t reported back promised more pain than whatever Nick could dish out right now, so he wasn’t about to run away with his tail between his legs. Besides, Nick was clearly getting upset by Goro’s presence, and the satisfaction from that made the pain a little more bearable.
“You’ll have to try harder than that, Nick.” Goro’s voice was weaker now, but he was trying to keep it steady again. He tried to slash at Nick again with the knife in a few staggered swipes, though not aimed at any part of him in particular.

If there was one thing the brothers shared, it was tenacity. At least it was then, as Goro came charging at Nick even despite all the punches he had suffered and as Nick remained standing even as he felt his body begin to strain with the effort of staying transformed.
He tried to dodge Goro’s swings by leaping to the side, but a sudden searing pain told him one of the blows had met its target. Despite how it looked, Nick’s armour currently only offered him increased strength and did not give him any protection, therefore the blade had easily cut through his extra hide and found the human flesh below.
Cursing in bitter, agonised fury, Nick came at Goro again. He could feel his transformation time running out from how much his muscles were beginning to ache and his head beginning to throb, but still he threw as many punches as he could, though his aim grew worse with each attempt.
While his efforts to stay transformed were valiant, there was only so much he could do. At last, the armour melted back into its liquid state and receded rapidly into the growth on his back. Nick fell to his knees without meaning to. He tried to scramble back, but his weakened body moved slow and he was wide open to a counterattack if Goro still could.

Nick was clearly slowing down now, that much was obvious to Goro. As the blade finally met flesh and he heard Nick curse, he smirked behind his mask. Staying upright was becoming difficult, and his wing was still bleeding, and yet he was starting to feel better now. He just wished he could see Nick’s face right now, probably twisted in anger and pain. Imagining it was enough right now, though.
One swing from Nick hit Goro right in the chest, and the next hit him in his right wing. However, with Nick’s faltering aim, it wasn’t hard for Goro to dodge the rest of the strikes. Any he couldn’t dodge, he did his best to deflect with his wings. Even if a couple hit the existing cut on his right, it was preferable to letting Nick punch his face again.
As Nick’s armour retracted and he fell to his knees, Goro wasted no time before going to slash at his back. However, before the knife made contact, he stopped himself. He could kill Nick right now, but… But that’s not what Mother wanted him to do. Shaking, he tossed the knife away.
However, seeing Nick defenseless, he couldn’t stop himself from trying to kick Nick right in his stupid smug asshole face. "Do you have anything left to say, Nick? Any more comebacks?"

Curse word after curse word blared in Nick’s mind. He could not lose his power now: Goro was still there. If he left himself open for even a second Goro would –
Nick’s thoughts shattered as Goro’s foot collided with his weakened form. He was sent crashing onto his back, nose not broken but his face certainly smarting as though it had been.
“You feel better for that, you son of a bitch?” he snarled with all the malice he could muster when his mind finally regained some vague semblance of clarity.
Nick’s vision was blurry. His head pounded like a club bass. It was raw fury alone that gave him the strength to get back onto his feet, though he swayed drunkenly. All the while his hate-filled eyes did not leave Goro.
“I don’t know why I’m wasting my time with a weakling like you. I moved beyond you a long, long time ago. If you really have to tell Mother anything, tell her there’s been a complication.” The image of Rin’s horrified face flashed through his mind followed by a scream of I hate you! In his current state he was unable to stop himself from flinching at the physical pain this caused him.
‘Complication’ was a mild way of putting it, really.
His fists slowly balled. “But I’m not giving up on my dream. I will create a better future for the powerful…” For himself. “A world where weaklings like you don’t belong!”
