WORD COUNT: TAGGED: TAGGED: Fluffy The task that they were given had been a relatively simple one. Show up at a specific spot, reconvene with another student from the same class, exchange quirks and begin working on refining them. The suggested method had been relatively simple. Learn to more appropriately control ones quirk by passing a baseball back and forth between the two students. Of course, for some such a method would not be appropriate. For most, however, this simple exercise could be adapted to fit their needs through teamwork. If one was a speedster, toss to make them run precisely to catch the ball. If one was strong, make them throw further while remaining accurate. For elemental quirks, targetting a flying baseball with a gout of flame would provide challenge enough. It was the first lesson. It was a simple one. It was supposed to give them an idea of where they started. Yet, it also had an ulterior motive. To get two students talking, cooperating, getting to know each other. There were many students in every class, so of course getting to know everyone on the first few days was impossible. So introducing the students to the class little by little seemed appropriate.
A young female, thin as a stilk, was making her move. Wearing the standard Yuuei school uniform, there wasn't anything remarkable about the girl. Rin had begun walking out onto the ground alpha, significantly earlier than the scheduled meetup. Nervous that she may get lost, nervous that she may be late, anxious that her partner was going to arrive early and therefore wait for her for a significant amout of time, she had decided to show up there early. Really early. Not knowing her partners quirk, she had gotten a full net of baseballs. There were easily fifty balls in the net. In case her partner needed to target them with an element and had the skill to hit, they needed a rather significant amount of balls to make it through to the e nd of the lesson. Also with her, she had a small notebook and several pens. Taking notes of how quirks functioned, understanding what others were capable of, creative ways they used their quirks. Absolutely all information gained on the first day was important. Learning quickly, adapting quickly, it was the only way that she was going to survive...
When it came to the lesson itself, Rin unfortunately had no plans to share the true nature of her own quirk. To even showcase it, she needed to be wounded, either through self harm or through external harm. It wasn't a practical quirk to practice, it was always associated with pain. Additionally, not many understood how her quirk worked. As soon as they saw blood, they freaked out. Calling teachers, ambulances, or even being frightened. The girl's quirk was evil, of that much she was certain. It was a curse onto her being. A curse that she needed to turn into a blessing if she was going to be of any use as a heroine in the future. Sighing softly, she plopped down the bag of baseballs. Carefully stroking her own shoulder, it was still pained from the weekend. It hadn't been a pleasant weekend at all.
The girl's sapphire blue eyes moved across the landscape. There were still a handful of minutes until the official time where they were supposed to meet. Even so, there were several individuals that hse had met in class, who she'd prefer not having to cooperate with just yet. Especially the guys were towering over her, making her feel so incredibly small and insignificant. Hopefully, maybe, she would have a partner her own size and frame, and not some hulking monster that could toss balls at a speed where they'd tear her arms right off....

The tall, broad young man with the monstrous Quirk known as Nick Cross made his way to his designated exercise area. As usual, he walked with confidence, head held high as he took long and purposeful strides. He could not afford to show weakness, not now when he was about to get up and close and personal with one of his classmates.
He found the notion of getting to know his classmates through these exercises pointless and silly; they were all working through the hero course as individuals, after all. Still, it was not his place to complain, he knew that. He had been raised knowing he had to respect his teachers if he wished to succeed, as much as he wanted to complain about this. He preferred so much to work alone. He was not even sure how he would begin working with a complete stranger.
At the very least he hoped for someone with a powerful Quirk, someone of a similar build to him he could really test his mettle against –
These aspirations crashed and burned the instant he arrived where he was supposed to be. The fragile, demure girl from his class he hardly ever heard speak stood waiting for him. He stopped, unable to prevent himself from wide-eyed blinking, wondering if there had been some sort of mistake here.
“You?” he cried.
There had to have been a mistake. They were clearly not matched well at all.

WORD COUNT: TAGGED: TAGGED: Fluffy Lady luck simply wasn't on her side when it came to these things. There had been several partners in class that she had felt more comfortable interacting with. Several partners that were of frames that seemed more compatible for this kind of exchange. Instead, the tiny girl, frail and meek, was given one of the largest guys in class. The sheer size difference made it very clear that this was likely going to go south exceedingly fast. Sighing softly as he approached, she was going to make the best of it. Afterall, he was there to train to be a hero too. This couldn't possibly go all bad. It couldn't poss--
You?!
Startled, the girls eyes shot wide open, staring at him as if she had just witnessed some sort of crime. Immediately stepping away from him, the girl held her arms up in front of herself in an almost defensive posture, as if the boy could jump at her at any given moment. Aggresion wasn't something that the girl felt overly comfortable dealing with at this junction, especially not from enormous guys. It reminded her of things that she would rather forget. Rather never have to deal with. Quietly, she began apologizing to him, not exactly sure what she was apologizing for, but his reaction clearly spoke that she had, in one way or another, done him some huge disservice.
"I'm.. I'm sorry! I.. What.. What did I do? I'm sorry, I swear.."
Heart was hammering away in her chest. Had this boy been just an ordinary human, it would've been bad enough. At the back of her mind however, she kept being reminded that this boy had some kind of quirk. Imagining the most horrible things that he could do to her, she shivered, quivered. Breathing softly, she soon looked at him again, almost as if to confirm that he wasn't coming any closer. Hurriedly, as if introducing herself was going to protect her from his wrath, she s pat out her name and a greeting at him.
"I'm I'm I'm R-rin... Rin Kurama... W-who... Who are you?"
Stuttering nervously, his rather aggressive greeting had definitely put her on the back foot. Not exactly pulling further away, it was still positively clear that there were many other places she'd rather be in this moment... This could very easily end up being one of the worst introductions to a new school that she had ever had. Yuuei was terrifying, and several advisors had assured her that being a hero, was never going to be a real profession. Now, facing these incredible odds, she wasn't even sure being a hero was something her personality was cut out for.

The frustration Nick felt was like a colony of ants crawling around inside him. Of all the people he could have been paired with, why her? Why the frail little girl who would likely shatter upon simply brushing against his true form?
As he watched her fumble around in response to him, he let part of his frustration out in a long, weary sigh.
“It’s nothing,” he said, even though it was something. “Forget about it.”
As displeased as he felt, he knew deep down there was nothing he could do now. He was going to have to make the best of this, somehow. He was going to have to work extra hard to seem impressive in this exercise compared to his classmates. Damn it all…
Begrudgingly, he extended a hand to her. “My name’s Nick. Hi. I like long walks on the beach and reading about things that happened centuries ago.”
Why did he add the latter part? It seemed even when he felt unhappy his humorous side was never truly dormant.

WORD COUNT: TAGGED: TAGGED: Fluffy The girl felt completely out of place. The frustration that he was feeling, somewhat lingered in the air with every movement, with every word. It made the girl feel incredibly uneasy. It was the same kind of treatment that everyone always gave. Like she was a helpless disappointment. Perhaps if she had been a different person, she would've been fighting that notion, shouting loud about how awesome she truly was. Instead, the words and sensations typically rung true. Rin too saw herself as a disappointment. As such, it was easy for her to accept that others would view her in the same way. The boy followed up the introduction with a loud, echoing sigh. Just like so many others, he was settling. Knowing that he couldn't complain and get another partner, he was accepting that he could only make the best of the horrible partner that he was given. Rin seemed to shrink even smaller, not keeping eyecontact, barely even looking at him at all. If the girl had been able, she would've found a hole to hide in. It would be less embarassing than being so sorely out of place.
When his arm was stretched out towards her, accompanied by a short introduction, the girl hesitated. It quickly became apparent to her, that not accepting his handshake would be beyond rude. So despite preferring no physical contact with the behemoth that could likely tear her arm off if he tried, she closed her palm into his. His hand was almost twice the size of her's. Compared, it was almost like pitting an adult together with a child. Their different size frames were ridiculous to look at from the outside. Continuing with a polite, quiet tone, still in a voice that he needed to sharpen his ears to hear, she responded. "P-pleasure to meet you, Nick-san.." Unsure of whether the whole reading part had been an enormous joke, or the actual truth, the girl decided to respond by focussing on herself. Reading was one of the things that the girl did often. Probably too often and for way too long. "I do enjoy reading too. There's so many great things one can learn from literature. In fact, almost anything." Smiling softly, she was doing her best still to not look directly at him...
...The girl then took a step to the side, slowly untying the net holding the baseballs. While she certainly wasn't of big physique or anything, there was a gentle grace to her movements. In a soft motion, the girl then tossed him a few baseballs, one at a time, from the net. Once he had about three available, she herself pocketed a few into the trek suit. Nodding quietly, she then continued. "S-so.. H-how do you want to practice? W-what would be.. uhm.. good for your quirk?" Hesitating, she wasn't taking even a moment to speak of herself. Having simply stepped into a supporting role, if Nick decided that he wanted to focus on looking awesome, she had no real problem taking the backstage to his performance. That is how she typically did things. Avoid standing out positively or negatively. A side figure, supporting everyone else as best as she could.

Despite the black cloud of negativity hanging over Nick, his eyebrows did lift with mild interest when the girl spoke of her own enthusiasm for literature. So they had at least one thing in common, then. In that case, he would much rather have preferred to talk to her about books and history than this, get to know her in a way where they actually did match up to each other. Not fumble around as they were undoubtedly about to do making complete asses of themselves.
He watched her tiny self move towards a nearby net he had somehow missed until that point. He wondered which teacher had arranged this and if it were their idea of a joke; it was obvious just looking at the pair how horribly unsuited for each other they were. It was like pairing a gazelle together with a rhinoceros. Yes, she had some grace to her, he would admit, but that did not change the fact she was probably going to snap in half if she bumped into him.
She released some baseballs from the net and threw a couple to him. He caught all of them with expert precision. He looked down at them as though he were having flashbacks to the time a baseball murdered his entire family. His eyebrows then narrowed, lines forming on his forehead as his grip tightened and his hands began to shake.
Baseballs. Bloody baseballs. What the hell were they meant to do with these? His frustration now shifted away from Rin to Yuuei itself. He thought Yuuei was supposed to be state of the art. Yes, it was a brand new facility, the first of its kind, untested, but he had expected something a bit fancier than a handful of old, peeling baseballs. Proper targets. Just anything but these. If he told his mother about this entire debacle she would laugh her head off and likely tell him to return to England, as there was clearly no hope for Yuuei.
He would not tell her about this, he decided. Surely Yuuei would still prove itself to be worth his time. Right?
Nick resisted the urge to throw the baseballs against the ground in his anger. He took deep breaths to calm himself. Somewhere in among this he heard her meek little voice say something about Quirks, which brought him back to reality just enough. He sighed again to steady himself.
“Ah, my Quirk,” he said after a moment. “Yes. I suppose the purpose of this exercise was to show each other what we can do, wasn’t it?”
He took a step back from her. “It’s a transformation triggered by a growth on my back. Basically, I can grow armour for a limited amount of time. It enhances my strength and my agility.” He spread out his arms – he did not actually need to make any movements to activate his Quirk, but it helped to indicate to others that he was about to use it. “Here I go.”
The disc-like growth on his back bulged out. A thick, black, sludgy, fleshy substance spread out from its centre and consumed his body, solidifying into black plates over his muscular structure with dark red strands between them. With his spikes and horned, almost demonic face, he knew he looked intimidating, maybe even more like a villain than a hero. He raised a hand.
“Don’t be afraid,” he said. “I’m still me under here. Let’s, I don’t know, see how far we can get throwing them to each other while keeping the same distance.” It was not a very impressive manoeuvre, but he could think of little else to do with just sodding baseballs.
“Is your Quirk suited to a task like that?” he asked, realising she had not told him what her Quirk was.

WORD COUNT: TAGGED: TAGGED: Fluffy If an abstract phenomena was to ever take proper form, it would likely have been frustration. At least, the boy with whom she was paired up, seemed to be seething with frustration. Building, gaining, growing. It was like watching a carbonized drink being constantly shaking, building up pressure, about to blow any moment. The girl decided not to look at him. Instead, the sapphire blue eyes were scouting the terrain, trying to figure out a few different ways that they could possibly do training. Perhaps given the fact that he was another large boy with a toned body, she figured he probably had an enhancement type quirk. Then, in an almost anticlimatic fashion, the pressure of the bottle was released, as Nick began casually explaining her about his quirk. It was strange to see an individually so clearly, so obviously frustrated, let it all fizzle out into nothingness. In fact, to Rin, he almost seemed mellowed out. Settling. It was the same kind of reaction that her father had, when something wasn't going according to his plans. The deep sigh, the soft shake of the head, accepting that he was stuck with Rin.
The explanation of his quirk would've sufficed for the most part. However, Nick decided to simply go ahead and show her. A dark armor, a terrifying visage, the girl took a few steps backwards, startled. Quivering in front of him for a moment, Rin shook her head from side to side, forcing the shock to leave her. Acting like she was scared of him was the opposite of building friendship and trust. So instead, she took another short step backwards, eyes opening wide as if to get him into full perspective. "T-thats pretty awesome. M-my quirk is pretty d-dull in comparison.." Rin spoke quietly, shifting a little from side to side to get a good idea of what his armor was looking like. Looking thoughtful for a moment, as he suggested his method of training, Rin was considering it for a few moments, before shaking her head like a no. "I'm afraid if you were to toss as hard as you can, I couldn't return the baseball to you with a toss. I do have an idea though.."
Grabbing the bag of baseballs, the girl began stepping across the field, until they came to a large concrete wall for the basketball court. Rubbing a bit of grass onto the cement, she colored an essentially green target-practice onto the wall. It took a little while, but it soon became quite noticeable. "..Since you can toss harder than me, if you toss as hard as you can at the wall, hitting the target, it'll fly straight to me. Then I can toss directly to you, instead of at the wall..." Rin smiled softly, facing him, finally looking at him directly, before she began explaining her quirk. "My quirk lets me burn nutrients faster, mainly granting me increased stamina. So whenever your accuracy on the target is off, I'll sprint at the ball to grab it. So you get to practice both agility and strength, and I get to practice my stamina... Yeah? Sounds good?" The girl was trying extremely hard to be positive and open with her idea. Trying extremely hard to be friendly, polite, amazed by his quirk. It was difficult for her to open up, and it wouldn't take much of a retort to have her retreat back into her shell...
"Oh, and, don't hold back. I'm not as fragile.. as uhm.. I look.."

Being in this form made Nick feel like a god among men, plain and simple. The sheer power that coursed through his body would have overwhelmed a lesser being. He emanated it. He knew a mere glance at his towering, muscular, armoured body was all it took to tell people he meant business.
This power was what the Quirkless envied. They lashed out at Quirkers because they knew they could not come close to it. Their time was at an end, and there was nothing they could do. The lessons of his upbringing came back to him in that moment as he looked down at himself and flexed his fingers. The harsh training he had endured, the exhaustion and the pain, had all been for this? No. Yuuei might have so far turned out to be underwhelming, but he would still make something of it; he was determined to.
I’ll make you proud, mother, he thought to himself. Even if this place might not be all that we expected. Just don’t ever try to stop me from becoming the best…
He was too absorbed in himself for that moment to notice Rin’s initial reaction to his true form. He slowly turned his burning crimson gaze back to her as she described her own idea, which he shrugged and nodded assent to. He was not too bothered that she denied his idea; he would go with whatever worked best for both of them. Only then would they get optimal results, after all. Or as close to anything resembling ‘optimal’ as they could get with this horrible mismatch…
He followed her across to the basketball court, ears pricking with at last some interest in her as she described to him her own Quirk. So, a stamina boost. That sounded incredibly simplistic. Surely there had to be something more to it than that for her to have gotten herself here? Still, Nick brushed it off. If he dwelled on it any further he was just going to give himself a killer migraine, he knew. Though it perhaps gave some explanation as to why they had been paired together, since his own Quirk granted him more stamina than the average human. He still felt this was a huge mistake of some teacher’s, though.
“Very well,” he said to her. “Prepare yourself.”
Not as fragile as she looked, she claimed. They were certainly about to see how true that was. He cracked his neck. He channelled every ounce of his anger and frustration into his pitch, letting out of furious cry as he let it loose like a meteor. It struck the target with titanic force and rebounded towards Rin at truly frightening speed.

WORD COUNT: TAGGED: TAGGED: Fluffy The girl herself had no real indications as to why the students had been paired in the way that they had. From what she could tell with the timetable, there was about enough time to have five pairings a day. It meant that at the end of the week, if everyone had been equally active in activities, they'd have been paired with everyone in the class at least once. So unlike Nick, her thoughts was never on whether they were compatible or not. Rather, she was trying to make the most out of their time practicing together. When it came to Rin and her own expectations, ideals, goals, they were all personal. The girl's father, Enzo, wasn't too interested in the hero business at all. If the girl was to listen to his advice, she had picked a regular education and started earning some real money, instead of fooling around with that quirk nonsense. Stretching her body, the girl slowly prepared herself. Even if the force of his tosses was going to be reduced by throwing at the wall first, she was going to struggle with catching things from increased strength quirks.
As he spoke, the girl took a deep breath. It was clear that her focus was reaching its absolute peak, for she wasn't aware of exactly what to expect. It was completely possible that he could throw a baseball fast enough that it could become legitimately dangerous for her to catch. His armor looked frightening enough at the very least. The girl noticed it immediately. How every ounce of his frustration was poured directly into the toss. He even let out an angered cry, as he let loose the ball. The loud slapping sound the ball made as it hit the wall was unmistakable. This throw, pure power wise, was on par with something one could see in the MLB. A quick step to the side, the girl attempted to intercept. The baseball slammed straight into her open palm, held in front of her chest, as her fingers closed around it. The force was enough that her hand pressed into her chest in a painful way. The skin in her palm already red, as if she had been giving full-power high-fives for ten minutes. For a short moment, it seemed like the girl may have been pushed backwards and onto the ground, but then balance was maintained. Despite the pain, despite how it felt like her fingers would go numb if she kept catching baseballs with such force, she refused to show it to him. Hiding the flaring, burning pain in her palm behind a soft, gentle smile. "I hope that got out most of your frustration.. I still caught it though."
Throwing the baseball as hard as she could, straight towards him, it was certain that she had no real strength quirk. It was a very ordinary throw. Not horrendous, but ordinary. Hiding the palm of her left hand by pressing it against her pants, she wasn't going to let him see her pain. Rin wanted to prove that she wasn't as weak or useless as he first thought. Even if it was only a soft smile. Even if it was only a stray thought that maybe she wasn't so bad afterall. Anything would count as a small victory. "Give me another." The girl called out to him, gesturing for him to throw again. Hopefully, just hopefully, now that he seemed less pissed and disappointed, his throw wouldn't feel like it could tear her arm straight off. It really hurt, and now letting it show on her face required quite the stubbornness.

She caught it. The force pushed her back slightly, made her falter just a little, but she did not fall on her ass. She did not burst into tears or roll around on the ground gripping her hand in pain. All things Nick had expected her to do. His eyes went wide behind his demonic helmet in a mix of more shock and amazement than he would ever have admitted to feeling. He watched her steady herself and shoot him a smile of all things.
"I hope that got out most of your frustration.. I still caught it though."
Nick folded his arms in an effort to maintain his cool and regain his composure.
“You certainly did,” he answered.
It was like having watched a mouse lift up a titanium block. Perhaps she was not quite the hopeless, helpless weakling he had taken her for? He wondered if she had used her Quirk at all to catch the ball. It could just have been a fluke, of course. Only one way to know for sure; keep going.
His hand shot up and snatched the ball she threw back to him out of the air with ease. He glanced down at it for a second; was his frustration now gone? While he still felt somewhat irked by the situation, a new sensation of curiosity was taking over. Curiosity about Rin, what her Quirk could do and if she was truly capable of more than she seemed to be.
He looked back up as she surprised him yet again by asking him to throw another. Seemed her confidence improved ‘in the moment’, so to speak – maybe. He had to figure this out.
“Alright,” he said. “But I warn you; that was a practice shot!”
He unleashed another rocket shot yet again, though despite his cocky words this one did not have the rage-fuelled power of his first throw. It missed its target by several centimetres and went bouncing off in an awkward direction. Nick exclaimed a loud curse in English. “Shit!”
Oh, how his words had come back and force-fed themselves to him. He thanked the God he did not even believe in that this task was not in front of the rest of his class.

WORD COUNT: TAGGED: TAGGED: Fluffy The atmosphere had completely changed around Nick. There was no longer the look of pity in his eyes. No longer the you're so frail you must be a thousand leagues below me. Instead, there was a sparked interest. A desire to see more, understand more, move further. So Rin burrowed the pain deep within, hiding it behind the smile. In reality, the girl could only catch maybe a couple of those before her hand would be completely ruined for a few days. Still, as Nick agreed to throw another, mentioning how the first one had been nothing more than a practice shot, Rin readied herself. If that had truly only been a practice shot, this little entertaining game between the two of them could end much quicker than she had hoped. Learning about the quirks of others, pushing against her own limits, expanding her horizons. Yuuei was providing so much. Seeing more, improving herself was creating the stubbornness to not give up. Not yet. Just a single step further. The focus around her was intense, her breathing steadied.
However, the toss that came from Nick this time, lacked everything the last throw had. It's power was clearly not on the same level, thank the heavens, but the accuracy was off too. Setting off in a dash, the girl had said that picking up stray baseballs was part of the exercise. So of course she'd try to pick it up. The baseball seemed like it was going to pass by. At this point, most normal people would've stopped chasing. This was but a simple exercise. There was no merit to pushing any further. For Rin however, the only thing in her eyes and mind was picking up the ball. Setting off, she leapt at the ball, stretching her hand out to catch it. The baseball touched her fingertips, just enough that it's momentum was stopped. Rin had failed to catch it, but she had managed to touch it! The excitement lasted only for a brief moment however, as Rin came to realize what leaping meant...
Covering her face, the girl slid across the grassy field at full speed. Grass and dirt grinding against her uniform as she came to a skidding halt. The girl's entire school uniform was covered in the mess. Rin's face and hands also suffered the treatment. Spots of dark earth, spots of green grass. Several blades of grass were intermingled in the girl's dark hair. Despite the rather rough landing, Rin didn't remain downed for long. Slightly winded, the girl staggered to her feet, beginning to brush off the worst parts of the dirt and grass, coughing lowly. "Darn.. I almost had it too.." Taking a few wobbly steps, Rin bent over to pick up the baseball. In the same kind of fashion as before, she lobbed it back to Nick. There was no complaining that he had missed his target. No complaining about the swan dive onto the grassy field. No complaining at all. Instead, she offered him a soft fragile smile.
"Next time, for sure, I'll catch it.."

Just like that, any modicum of respect Nick had been developing for Rin was gone. He watched her go sliding across the grass with a sinking soul. Now he was extremely glad this was not in front of the rest of the class. He might possibly have dropped dead on the spot if it had been. Was it possible to die from shame? He was beginning to believe so.
Did he really have a right to judge her, though? He had flubbed that throw. How humiliating. He did not understand; he was normally dead on with this kind of thing, or at least that is what he told himself. He let out a low growl of frustration; not with Rin, but with his own uncharacteristic incompetence.
He had to do better. He was supposed to be better. Those were the words he always told himself whenever he made even the smallest failure. Failure was not an option for him, period. Not for anything.
He watched her stagger back over to him with the ball. She seemed in high spirits now, a contrast from the meek little thing she had been when they met. Nick, too, was no longer the proud and arrogant young man he had been, his fists clenched and the face behind his helmet a grim one.
“It’s fine,” he said with no emotion in his voice.
He was not about to admit having screwed up there. He turned back to the wall. “Let’s try that again.”
Enough messing up. Enough embarrassment. He put everything he had into his next throw, which met its mark much to his infinite relief. It went shooting directly towards Rin.
“Catch it!” Nick howled.
He grimaced as soon as he spoke, feeling his muscles suddenly strain with the effort of keeping him stood upright. He was not going to be able to hold this form for much more. He likely only had one more throw in him.

WORD COUNT: TAGGED: TAGGED: Fluffy The boy was displeased, clearly. Rin was slowly beginning to understand exactly what type of person Nick Cross was. A boy who had, through life or through lessons, been taught that only strength, power, dominion counted for anything. So when he had made a clear mistake, it had gotten under his skin almost immediately. Disappointed in himself for making mistakes. It had also become clear to the girl, that when she tried to follow up on his mistake by catching the ball despite its strange curvature and off-course direction, the fact that she had been unable made him see her as weaker for it. Scratching her cheek, it was slowly becoming apparent that the only way to make Nick Cross give one respect, was by being strong and fearless... Two things Rin currently did not possess. At the very least, she was thankful that Nick seemed like an individual which was fairly simple to decipher. It'd make upcoming interactions a little simpler to deal with. Even if it did make him seem a bit like a dumb brute type...
"I can catch a few more, if you can keep going." Rin replied simply, calmly, looking at him with the same lack of emotion that his sentences held. Mirroring him ever so slightly, communicating in his language. Even if Nick wasn't her normal type of partner for, well, anything, she still did her best to be a good teammate for him. To match up to his personality and help him grow as a hero, as a person!
The ball was let loose from his grasp in a thundering throw once again. It seemed that his frustration with himself was fuelling this throw. Emotions seemed to drive his competence and effort. The girl made a small mental note, that it may be possible to completely exhaust Nick, by simply getting him completely pissed off. Even if his strength and effort clearly increased with every power-outlet, so too did his stamina and bodily strain. A soft breath left the girl's lips, the sapphire blue eyes focusing on the baseball that came flying at her. Nick's howling catch it startled the girl. The baseball struck into her hand, which slapped directly into her stomach from the force. Gritting her teeth, the pain was getting pretty bad. The red skin at the center of her palm had gained purple hues. Hopefully the students weren't meant to write anything for the rest of the day, for at this point, a third toss at such strength would make it damn near impossible for Rin to hold onto something to write with. From her fingertips to the base of her hand, she could very clearly feel every single of her own heartbeats. Lobbing the ball back to him in a casual manner, the girl's face still showed no signs of her internal struggle. Even her voice seemed mostly intact.
"Nice throw.. Now we just need you to get a bit more consistent, both with power and precision. Do you think you can copy the exact throw you just made?" If emotions were interferring with his ability to output and be consistent, it could be a liability. Asking him to replicate a throw, both in strength and precision, might be a tall task to ask of an oaf. For Rin, it was more testing waters as to whether her theories on his personality and abilities held any water. For Rin, social interactions were all translated by her mind. It is why people who she had a hard time understanding, were incredibly difficult to interact with. So when she figured she understood someones workings, she always tested the waters, even if only hesitantly. The Raven haired girl offered him a soft smile, her fingers twitching. It really hurt. Hopefully this next throw would be the last, cause she wouldn't be able to catch too many more. They could have at least provided the students with baseball gloves if they were meant to catch such a hard ball!

Rin caught it this time. Thank heavens for small mercies. Nick doubted he could have handled seeing her go sliding on her face again. He was breathing heavier by the moment. The effort of staying armoured was about to become too much, he could tell.
She spoke, then. Saying he needed to be more consistent with his power and precision. Telling him what to do would have bothered him enough, but it did even more so when she had screwed up as much as he had. It lit a flame of irritation within him. He turned to face her, body growing tense from more than just the effort of maintaining his form. His eyes flashed dangerously.
“You’re not our teacher,” he said in a low tone. “Don’t tell me what to do.”
He made no move to harm her, however, instead turning back to the wall. “I can do more than just replicate that throw. I can do better!”
He really meant it this time. This was not a statement of arrogance; this was a vow to himself and everything he stood for. He summoned every last ounce of strength in his straining body and channelled it his next throw. The ball exploded out of his hand and went shooting off. It was even more powerful than his first throw. It ricocheted off its target with violent force and went careening in Rin’s direction like a torpedo.
Nick, meanwhile, dropped onto one knee. His armour melted into its sludgy form and receded into the growth on his back, which shrank down again. His head banged like a drum. He groaned and reached up to rub his forehead, but managed to remember Rin was there even in his hazy post-transformation state and stopped himself.
Rin’s presence was also the reason he forced himself to stand again no matter how much his entire body ached. He briefly glanced down at his hands and grit his teeth at the sight of how painfully, sickeningly human they were now. If only he could hold his transformation for longer. It was pathetic how little time he was able to spend in what he considered to be his real form.
He let his arms drop and assessed what had gone down here. Only one throw had been a dud – but to him one was one too many. He promised himself to come back and practice his throws more and some point in the future. For the time being, though…
“We’re done here.”
Not once had he glanced at Rin to see how she handled the catch.

WORD COUNT: TAGGED: TAGGED: Fluffy Sighing softly to herself, the girl took a few short breaths. It was basically exactly what the tiny female had assumed. This boy was brimming with pride, arrogance. The only ones who could speak any words to him, were those that he himself considered worthy. Perhaps stronger, better. In short, with her meek appearance and lack of achievements, there wasn't anything the girl could speak of that Nick Cross would listen to. Perhaps in his world he viewed himself as somewhat of an apex predator and Rin as nothing more than a harmless sheep. At least this response confirmed her suspicions in regards to his personality. Understanding him was the first step in communicating, in making him a better hero. Perhaps unfortunately, the little personality experiment came with a severe drawback. Nick winded up completely, putting every single ounce of his remaining strength into the throw. Perhaps because his pride had been hurt. Either case, Rin's eyes widened as the throw headed directly for her. Bracing with both hands, the baseball smacked directly into her grasp. The rotation of the baseball alone was grinding against the skin in her palm. The pain was bad enough to make her bite down hard. It sounded like an enormous slap against her bare skin, the girl's body withdrawing backwards. The strike emanated throughout her body, enough to make her feel dizzy.
Nick wasn't looking in her direction. Nick wasn't interested in the outcome of this little activity. Perhaps most would've given up in this situation. Refused to catch the ball that would clearly bring nothing but pain. Even so, Rin had decided to catch it. Blood dripped from her palm, her skin had been broken, the girl's left main hand colored completely purple, now with streaks of red dripping from her fingertips. The ball was securely in her grasp. Holding it with her right hand, for a moment she just stood there. The girl's hand was burning, yet the sensation that felt more like a fire, was the defiance that had strangely built within her. Nick Cross had decided to look down on her, had judged her to be completely useless. Despite Rin's best attempt to cooperate, to be positive, helpful and kind, Nick had only shown disdain and dislike. Even if Rin mostly agreed with Nick, even if Rin inherently knew that she was worthless, she also knew that if she bowed over to a single baseball throw, then there wasn't a chance that her worthlessness could be remedied in the future. Rin went to Yuuei not because she was part of the strong. Rin went to Yuuei with dream of becoming strong...
It was a symbol to signify her defiance. With her right hand, the girl lobbed the ball over Nick, having it fall in the grass in front of him. Whether he was interested in the outcome or not, didn't matter to Rin. If he wasn't going to look at her attempt and catch the ball, she'd simply let him know that she had succeeded by bringing the ball to him. The bleeding, tortured hand was held on her backside, where he wouldn't be able to see it. For the rest of the day, it was going to burn, hurt, ache and pain... but as long as Nick was aware that she had caught it, that she had taken on his best, he'd probably be stuck with that pain for the rest of the day too. In that sense, Rin saw them in a more even light. Perhaps there was even a possibility, that Nick would be more frustrated with his inability to make Rin bow over, than Rin would be frustrated with her unusable hand...
"Now we're done... Remember to bring back the ball."
Changing her direction, Rin began marching off. Deciding not to follow his direction, the thing she really wanted to do, was find a bathroom to pour some cold water on her hand and get to cleaning some of the dirt off of her face and clothes. The day was still young, they still had other things to attend to, so the least Rin could do was remain as presentable as possible. As for Nick, the whole dilemma of dealing with him would have to wait to another day. As things were for the moment, he was simply not a person she could reach with reason and logic. Only a show of force could change his mind... Force that Rin did not yet possess..
