❝You're showing me colours of the sky, But all I see is Grey❞ 528 w. kenjutsu-f | reinforcement-f | radiant dawn-e As of late, Relena had this pent up anger building up inside of her. It had started with losing her room mate, Kimiko. Having simply left her behind without even so much as a note, Relena felt a hollow spot in her heart. Like a pit in her stomach that ached and gnawed at her soul. She felt like she wanted to cry, but she held it in...and holding it in made her feel even more pain. Now that the Sports festival was up, she had hoped that her Aunt and Uncle would show up to support her in her rescue efforts. However, her hopes were dashed in that regard as well. Her Aunt was running a food drive in the neighborhood and Uncle was busy with training some of the local kids. She told herself that she understood. That they were busy and it wasn't a big deal."It isn't. I don't need anyone...I'll only burden them." She murmured to herself. She came out in her hero outfit, which wasn't going to be impressing anyone. For some reason, ever since she donned Kimiko's old throw aways, Relena had grown quite fond of the get up. Even her initial name hero name idea was cast aside when Darren had quipped the name "Sword Girl" to her. She didn't even really use a sword. It was more like a stick, but it made her feel happy regardless.Relena stood in the combat arena where others participated in practice and sparring. But today she wouldn't be fighting a person. She had a ton of pent up anger in her and she didn't want to hurt someone. So instead, Relena would be practicing against some newer combat drones. Requesting a pair of bipedal bots, she stood facing off against them. She held her hand out to them, eyes narrowed in concentration. "Come!" She barked. The drones moved in tandem with one another. The left one arched back to deliver a hay maker, while the other made to grapple Relena. The girl jumped into the air, landing on the left's arm. Her quirk called forth a ray of light that solidified into a spear of light above her head. She commanded it to shoot directly into the bot's head.Though it lacked the strength to fully pierce it's skull, so Relena clawed her way to wrap her legs around it's neck. She took hold of the lance with both arms and tugged violently. At the same time, she pushed at the bot's neck. With her combined effort of strength and leverage, the head groaned and ripped from it's hinges. As the head flew through the air, Relena jumped off the bot's body and landed to face off against the next bot.She turned her head when she heard some noise around the arena. Apparently there was a small crowd forming to watch the spectacle, which made her feel a bit self conscious. Damn, I shouldn't have done this in public...then again, this is a festival. Maybe a little camaraderie wouldn't hurt.Relena turned to address the small gathering of folks. "Hey, would any of you care to help me deal with these mechanical monstrosities? I'm sure they're calling in the cavalry!"

I see you through the flood See you through the fire See you through the storms-a-raging
❧ One headpiece of an unfortunate drone was flying toward him, and Yoru caught it between dexterous fingers before it could collide with his face. The display in front of him was more than mesmerizing, and he could tell that at least half of the people gathered were similarly drawn to the sight.
He knew who the blonde girl was as soon as he caught a glimpse of her movements while walking through the training area to search for something to do. Not only was she a classmate, he also saw her on a certain meeting with the rest of the rescue participants, which, admittedly, could have gone a lot better than it did. But the most important was that this blonde left the best impression out of everyone present, and what he currently saw just made that impression that much better. She was a breathtaking sight while fighting, so it wasn’t a surprise she gathered an audience with her training exercise.
There was something in the background, a kind of desperation or anger that Yoru saw in her movements and fighting style. He wondered if that was the style she used all the time, or if she was just in the mood. He juggled the drone head in his hands before throwing it away and stepping forward a moment after Relena riled the audience up for a joined fight. Yoru wasn’t wearing his hero outfit, but something that was really similar to it – a prototype of short. Sleeveless red hoodie hugged his frame, his red pants reached just past his knees. Both pieces of clothing were accented by orange colors to match his eyes and flames. In the audience, he was probably the only one that dressed so lightly despite it being winter still. He wasn’t cold though. An inner heat-source kept him going even in a chill.
A lone drone walked up into the fighting ring to take the place of the defeated one, to keep the fight going. A flame crown burst into existence on Yoru’s forehead, the same orange color as his eyes. He leaped into the air, movements fluid and graceful, leaving behind a burst of harmless flames that even made a few people in the audience take a step back before they realized these flames did not burn. He landed just on top of the new drone, a flaming fist punching against its headpiece, the hotness of the flames melting the edges of its accents where it was made of a softer metal. It effectively stopped the drone in its tracks to pay attention to the new arrival instead of Relena. His jump already made the drone unbalanced, but after burning it, he kicked off of its shoulders, kicking it to the side and onto the ground. Yoru landed softly next to Relena, flames still licking both his arms.
“Doesn’t look like you need help, but it never hurts to even the odds out.” Three more of the drones walked up to them just as Yoru said that, and he thought, ‘Man, we still has the advantage here’. Let the lightshow start. He rushed forward again, targeting the drone on the far left.

❝You're showing me colours of the sky, But all I see is Grey❞ 629 w. kenjutsu-f | reinforcement-f | radiant dawn-e Relena held her weapon at the ready as the drone slowly began to arch it's way toward her. One of these drones had already tuckered her out a little, but now there were more coming. Hm...maybe this is a tad much? Can't back down now, though. Especially with a crowd watching.
She felt the air around her get warmer, which worried Relena. She hadn't gotten this hot and bothered, had she? No...it was something else. The blonde turned to regard someone who had stepped into the arena with her. A fellow student and one that she recognized to boot! A wide grin splayed across her face at the sight of the flame fighter that she knew as Yoruhi. Though she had encountered him briefly during her initial orientation, it wasn't until recently that she had actually talked to him.
She had been adamant in keeping him at a certain sports festival meeting, feeling both the literal and figurative fire burn within him. Yoruhi was someone who would one day become a true hero and someone that she could hopefully call friend one day. Perhaps that could start today? He wasn't dressed in his hero outfit, but then again neither was she. This was a casual sparring session, so just her plain white collared shirt and black skirt were all that Relena had needed.
Yoru performed an expert fiery delivery directly to the drone's head and leaped off of it, throwing the bot off balance and essentially out of the fight. As he landed next to Relena, she couldn't help but shake with admiration.
"That was quite an impressive assault, Yoruhi-san."
But in her mind, she was far less reserved. That was amazing! He made that look easy! And that flaming crown? He looks absolutely fantastic!
She breathed out slowly to focus on the task at hand. As three more joined the fight against the 1-A classmates, Relena cast a side long glance toward her new ally. "Three against two? Heh, seems unfair. For them!"
As Yoruhi moved to attack the left drone, Relena began her assault on the right one. If the two would be in sync, then hopefully they could finish their bots respectively and destroy the third together before it had a chance to react.
The drone reached out for her, but Relena used her forward momentum to slide low underneath and past the bot. She arched her body around to face the back of her opponent and called upon her quirk once more. Light from the sun shined around the blunt blade of her bokken, manifesting a brilliant golden glow around the sword and hardened into a sharper edge.
With the last of her momentum ending, Relena kicked her feet against the ground to dash directly at the drone. It turned around to face her, but it's reaction was too slow. She drove her blade straight into it's abdomen, digging deep as she forced the weapon in with all her strength.
Relena let forth a ferocious shout to flavor her attack as she adjusted her hold on the pommel. All her strength was used to push the weapon upward, slicing the bot from bottom to top in a jagged line of colorful sparks and white sunlight. As her blade reached the top of the bot's head, Relena kicked up to jump into the air. It wasn't very effective, but it looked cool for the crowd. As she was airborne, she spun slowly in an arc to hold her shining blade aloft with fury blazing in her eyes.
The bot fell apart cleanly in two before she even touched the ground. She held her glowing blade horizontal as she touched down on the ground. She pressed the back of the hilt against her palm, lowering her stance to prepare for when Yoruhi would strike the third bot.

I see you through the flood See you through the fire See you through the storms-a-raging
❧ Although he wasn’t expecting Relena to tell him off for joining her in such a flashy manner, he also didn’t expected her to tell him he was impressive. Getting praised, even if it was such a natural comment, was still a tad bit embarrassing. Yoru looked away to the side, his grin widening, ears getting red, but it seemed like the praise just energized him further instead of distracting him from the battleground. His flaming crown fluttered restlessly, just like the fire on his arms.
“Heh, exactly what I thought!” Was the last thing he said as a reply before he jumped in again with Relena to deal with the rest of the drones. He rushed the left one head on. He leaned forward, gaining speed that could be envied by any normal individual out there. But instead of attacking right away, he did what he did best, and changed direction at the last moment, just as he would have reached the battle machinery. Feinting, he stepped to the left, to end up on the furthest side, and a flaming right arm grabbed the drone’s, his foot moving to sweep its legs from under it and trip it forward, unbalancing it yet again. His fist followed, a burning left smashing against the drone’s back to dent it and effectively injure it in the process, taking it out of the count.
Unlike Relena’s, Yoru’s style was more about disarming, evading, and then damaging by blunt strikes and burns. He couldn’t cut a drone in half, but the heat and the wild orange fire was enough of a show for the audience to cheer for. Yoru was pure energy and instinct, never-ending movements and a sparking spirit. He was aware of Relena’s movements, the power and elegance of the solid light she created and struck her opponent with. It was a lightshow that matched his own, while the damage she caused was all the more visible in the aftermath.
Once she dealt with her own opponent, Yoru expected her to move to the third just as he did. She seemed to be just ready for that. “One strike for the last one! Come on!” He called for her to make sure they were on the same page. There was no point in either of them taking down this one alone. It should be done together to rile the crowd up further. Let them know that the Yuuei students weren’t only strong, but perfect at improvisation and teamwork, just as it should be. Let them all see that these youngsters will be the heroes to protect everyone from villains later on. Le the two of them be inspiration for the shier, less battle-oriented students out there.
Aiding his legs’ muscles, a burst of his flames helped him jump into the air, his feet lighting up in the same trademark flames that were that of the Flame Lord’s. In the air, as if he was flying freely, he spun his body around with the help of his fire bursts, gaining momentum to deliver a well-aimed kick to the back of the last drone’s head. Just as promised, it would be down in one strike from the two of them if Relena was ready to deliver a similarly timed attack, making this the perfect ending for a spontaneous teamwork exercise.

❝You're showing me colours of the sky, But all I see is Grey❞ 617 w. kenjutsu-f | reinforcement-f | radiant dawn-e It came as no surprise to her that Yoruhi was already finished with his bot. She had wished that she had the forethought to observe his fighting technique, but all she could be awarded with was his ending attack. Yet she did observe the fluidity in his strikes and could feel the orange fire exuding from him. Flame lord, indeed!
While both of them combined strength with speed, Relena could clearly see the experience backing Yoruhi. His strikes were quicker than hers and the precision of his fists connecting to the bot while purposely tripping it. Everything worked in tandem with his style of combat! It brought a wicked grin to her face as she glared at the last bot. She wasn't at all disappointed by his timing.
"You got it! Let's take this metal head down!"
Yoruhi understood what this was about. They were being watched and judged during this festival. Either of them could easily destroy this bot, but showing that UA could work together and put on a big flashy show was what mattered! It also helped that this exercise was great for blowing off steam. It made her smile from ear to ear to see Yoruhi on the same page.
She stood her ground for a moment to gauge just what her ally had in mind, but quickly nodded once she saw him leaping into the air. His fire trailing from behind, Yoruhi was preparing to deliver a kick using his quirk. Relena would answer in kind with her own quirk.
Holding her sunlight blade close to her hip, Relena ran at the bot to build up speed and momentum. Once she grew close enough to it, she kicked off the ground. The two 1-A students had both the front and flank of the bot and, if it could think, it looked pretty screwed.
She put all of her power into her quirk, causing the blade to grow longer and larger until it looked more like a large hunk of sunlight than a real blade. It wasn't blinding at all, but she kept it radiant enough for the crowd to be in awe. It was at that moment that she remembered their previous encounter. When things looked bleak during the meeting from earlier.
Yoruhi landed his precise fiery kick directly to the back of the drone's head, shoving it forward. To match with his attack, Relena drove her blade forward directly at the neck. She bared her teeth in a furious uproar of angry defiance at the bot. To her Aunt and Uncle. To everyone who saw quirkers in a negative light. This was a show to prove herself and all those who worked so hard everyday, risking their lives.
"Plus!"
The kick pushed the neck hard enough against the blade to sever it clean in half. Right at the moment when the blade would make contact with Yoruhi's leg, the light dispersed into a wave of bright sunlight, almost akin to an explosion of light. At the apex of the explosion, Relena let out a shout of defiance.
"Ultra!"
She pulled her bokken back close to her body and spun her body around in the air so that, as she passed Yoruhi, the two were back to back. Relena's shining resonance enhanced the orange flames from Yoruhi! She would grin widely at him with wide eyed adrenaline coursing through her veins.
Relena would land lightly onto the ground with her bokken being sheathed in a quick, decisive maneuver to hopefully cause the crowd to cheer even louder. The girl turned to regard Yoruhi and wave in his direction with a warm smile.
"That was amazing, Yoruhi! I would expect no less from you, of course. But to see you in action was quite something!"

I see you through the flood See you through the fire See you through the storms-a-raging
❧ They showed a flawless display of a team attack, if Yoru was to say so himself. His fire burned just as bright as Relena’s own light, and their timing was so on spot that the drone had no chance of winning. A bright spark was all it needed, and Yoru matched Relena’s battle cry with his own shout as they ended the fight with a decisive blow.
He landed with his back to Relena, even unknowingly matching her stance. Fire was kicked up in his wake when his feet touched the ground. As he stood and whirled around, his fire extinguished with a motion of his arms, only leaving his flame crown alive, shining and proud, just like the grin he wore after their fight.
“Man, that was awesome!” He raised both his hands up, palms toward Relena to urge her for a double high-five. She was incredible, the way she so fluidly fought no matter if she was alone or teamed up with another person in the ring. She was not even fazed that someone else joined her to fight, and it was especially impressive that she was able to keep up with his movements at all. Not many could do that anymore, especially among the newer students. Even the cheer from the crowd told him they were both pretty amazing out there, and were successful in riling the audience up.
Only Relena’s praise brought out a completely different side of his personality. His eyes shifted to the side, ears burned red from the words and a hand moved to scratch the back of his head, to distract him with something from the kind words offered. “I-it’s nothing really. I dunno what you expected anyway. But wow!” He grinned again, turning back to her. “You really wrecked them! That light weapon was so awesome, these things didn’t stand a chance! Feel like I wasn’t even needed here.”
Looking back around at the drones, Yoru had to admit the drones might not have been made to withstand this kind of power. Two already lost their heads, one courtesy to Relena, the other to both their combined attacks, another one was in pieces, while the last one had a shiny little dent on its back. All of them were out of order now. He scratched his chin in thought, one arm in front of his chest in a half-cross, holding his other elbow. “Maybe we went a little bit too aggressive but. I mean. These are drones. So being a wee bit showy can’t hurt.”
He turned, as if suddenly getting an idea, and urged Relena out of the fighting ring and away from the mechanical corpses. “How about getting out’a here before they make us clean the mess up? Hurry!” His mischievous smile and glinting eyes could tell her he was still pretty high on adrenaline from the fight, if the still present flaming crown didn’t make it obvious already. It wouldn’t be extinguished for a while, not until he either calmed down, or something happened to dampen his mood.

❝You're showing me colours of the sky, But all I see is Grey❞ 430 w. kenjutsu-f | reinforcement-f | radiant dawn-e Relena let out a laugh. Like, a genuine bawdy laugh as she ran toward Yoruhi and slapped her hands against his. There was a surge of adrenaline going through her from how coordinated the fight had turned out! That and the crowd cheering for the made her feel better about herself. As if she were someone to be admired, for at least a small amount of time. All of the bad thoughts from the beginning of the day seemed so far away, like they didn't even matter.
"Yeah, I really went all out! But what about you!? Just a single kick and that thing shut down! How strong are you anyways?"
It felt odd to hear someone compliment her on how she fought. Although Relena trained often, her quirk was not something she relied on too heavily. Call it what you will, but she wasn't one to boast. Yet hearing Yoruhi call it awesome was something that made her cheeks blush as she chuckled.
Looking at how utterly demolished the bots were, Relena was actually pretty astonished at their handiwork. It was like art, if art was destroying things. But at least the people were satisfied and there were even some kids in the crowd! Who knew? Maybe this display was the spur that these future heroes would talk about when they attended UA? The thought made her swell with pride.
"I feel kind of bad, though. Someone put effort into making these things and we trashed them within mere minutes. You think we should-"
But Yoruhi was already ushering the blonde out of the arena with a look that warranted a suspicious look from Relena. They wouldn't really make us clean this up, would they?
Relena didn't want to chance it and thus she slid her hand into Yoruhi's, sprinting away from the crowd while giggling the whole time. The normally stoic girl threw the tough act out, partially because impressionable kids were still watching her. But also because she was so negative for most of the day that it was being counter balanced hard due to Yoruhi's intervention.
It wasn't until she had led the way to the main street that Relena finally stopped in front of an ice cream stand. She felt how warm her hand was and then it finally dawned on her. She was holding a boy's hand...
Relena immediately pulled her hand back, eyes widened from the sudden realization as she stared at Yoruhi.
"I-I'm sorry! That was way too forward! P-Please forgive me-uhm, here I'll buy us some food!"
She turned to face the vendor, but glanced back at Yoruhi. His hand is warm...

I see you through the flood See you through the fire See you through the storms-a-raging
❧ That high-five was the best ending they could have. That, and the laugh he heard from her. When watching her fighting style, when she fought alone, Yoru suspected some strain, some trouble behind it. But seeing her genuinely happy and excited made him feel better too. “Pft, I dunno.” He snorted, shrugging with a smile that was a bit too full of himself than necessary. “I could keep up with most of the students here, tho.” He never really considered himself strong, but he knew he was a formidable fighter when it came down to it. That much was at least obvious, but part of it was thanks to the street-fighting he did way before coming to U.A.
They certainly left behind a sight, and if nothing else, the crowd, the smoke and the faint smell of burned metal would attract a supervisor here. While none of them seemed to be worried about it too much, Relena was almost proud of the scrap of metal they amassed in a span of a few minutes, and Yoru could not agree more. Except he remembered their principal was a military veteran. So he pushed Relena’s shoulder to get them out and away from the training ground even before she managed to finish her sentence.
“They made me and Ryuu clean up the pool on the first week when the school opened. I am not taking my chances anymore, better ditch before a teacher finds us!” He added as an afterthought, backing up his little worry about the mess they are leaving behind. But it did not seem he had to justify his actions to Relena – she took his hand and led the way even without that, and Yoru followed without another word. He shifted his body forward to take the lead halfway past the guests of the festival, avoiding collision like a pro.
He felt light and happy. Relieved. This was a nostalgic feeling from back when he was still part of a gang and the team ran through the city, boasting their parkour skills for everyone to see. This was the same. It was a welcomed extra that he was able to see his blonde classmate smile. Her girly giggles and hearty laughs were so much better than the tears he saw on the rescue meeting before, but even then there was so much emotion in her that they were overflowing. She was passion, light and fire, and those were all the things Yoru appreciated in life.
He huffed when Relena thought they were far away from the warzone and stopped. The sudden loss of her grip on his hand caught him by surprise as cold wind rushed through his fingers. He did not understand why she acted the way she did, wide-eyed and stutter-y, as if something happened that she would never be able to tell her family about. “Why are you apologizing?” He even tilted his head, confusion drawing his brows together under his still lit flame crown. Yoru was a being of emotion and instinct, driven by heart rather than mind, and so, awkward shifts in the mood simply fell off of his armor of obliviousness. He could not quite decipher why Relena might be embarrassed, but his simple mind might actually help ease some of the awkwardness she felt. Yoru could care less about holding hands when he threw an arm around his friends all the time. Fire users were the ones with the warmest of touches, after all.
“Eh, no need. I can get you ice cream if you want, tho. In exchange for butting into your training, or something.” He leaned on Relena’s shoulder with his right for a moment while talking, then turned to the vendor to see what kind of sweets they had. They seemed to sell the old school kind of ice cream, little balls of cold wonder. He checked through what they offered and then glanced at Relena, hopefully still around and not intent on buying food for him. “You seem like a fruity kind of girl for me. Or vanilla. Which kind do you want?” He was all about chocolate, stracciatella and lemon, if he had a choice in the matter
He would order and buy before he could have any second thoughts about the ice cream, before it would remind him of a certain old classmate, and before he remembered he will have to eat it under a minute if he did not want it to melt in his hands.

❝You're showing me colours of the sky, But all I see is Grey❞ 648 w. kenjutsu-f | reinforcement-f | radiant dawn-e Relena couldn't help but laugh at the image of Yoruhi being forced to scrub the pools. Sullen faced and annoyed. The complete opposite of how he was behaving now with an easy going smile on his face! Perhaps his emotions were far more infectious than he realized? He certainly put Relena in a far better mood, that was for certain. She could easily see him as a Pro hero and perhaps even the leader of a team with how personable he was.
She tapped the bottom of her chin with her forefinger as she studied him. "Apologize? Well, I suppose it's because I don't really have friends. So I don't know what's going too far or not. Though I will admit that I got caught in the moment when I stole you away like that."
The girl balled her hand in a fist and bonked herself on the forehead to clear the heat from her previous embarrassment. Yeah, it's just hot. I'm not flushed because of him, so just calm down. It's fine. You're fine. He's fine...no, wait. WHAT!? Shut. Up. Brain.
As Yoruhi spoke up about ice cream, Relena jumped at the interruption of her thoughts. "Huh? Wha? Oh!" She clapped her hands over her mouth at the offer. Relena nodded her head, still beaming quite literally. The girl didn't realize it, but her mood was causing her quirk to make her glow, which was an unfortunate side effect of her internal battery.
"Thank you so much!" She bowed her head to the boy and turned toward the vendor. "May I please have strawberry? With a little bit of sea salt caramel on top?"
The vendor complied with the request and handed her the ice cream. After fulfilling Yoruhi's order, Relena would casually walk beside him toward the direction of a bench away from the crowd while off offhandedly licking at her ice cream.
"I don't...do well around others, so you'll have to forgive my rather stilted demeanor. It is not my intention to come off the way I do, but it is just my nature."
She furrowed her brows at the thought. My nature. My demeanor. They are just a cover. A blanket that hides the monster that lies dormant within me. A killer.
But she shook the thought out of her head. This wasn't a day for melancholy. For once, she was legitimately happy and it was because of UA. The Sports Festival really was an amazing thing to behold.
"And my experience with boys only comes from romance novels that my Aunt owns, so I tend to behave somewhat standoffish. Oh my, I suppose that was rather forward of me as well. Please, once again, accept that I behave rather strangely whenever physical contact is involved. Even if someone accidentally brushes against me, I just seize up. No insult is intended."
The blonde girl breathed a long sigh as she took a seat on the bench, feeling the wind blow through her hair and causing her to relax a bit. "But I suppose I need to get over that. If I am to be a hero, I'll need to speak up more and get to know people. Kind people like yourself, Yoruhi."
She nodded to herself once again to confirm in her head that Yoruhi was indeed a good person. Relena was already glad that she was starting to branch out more and even happier to be participating in the Rescue Operation. There were so many interesting people at the meeting...
"Whether we are on the same team or against one another, promise me." She turned to look him straight in the eye. "Promise that you will do your absolute best because I will be doing the same."
Relena held her pinky finger out to him to show that she was serious. "Be the greatest man that you can be out there and prove to everyone that we are UA. Not just UA either, but Class 1-A!"

I see you through the flood See you through the fire See you through the storms-a-raging
❧ Relena had no idea how close that mental image was to the truth, but Yoru could at least say he got a best friend out of the involuntary pool-scrubbing, if nothing else.
Her explanation on the apology was rubbing him the wrong way for the sole reason she mentioned she did not have any friends. What was that about? “Well then, think about it this way. You have one more friend than what you started the day with.” He paused. “Actually, you know what? Make it two. I am sure Ryuu liked the way you talked back at the meeting, so you can consider him a friend too. I will just kick him if he says otherwise.” A cheeky grin appeared on his face as he leaned forward, close to Relena’s nose, probably too close for comfort. “Who stole away who now?” He fell back with a tilt of his head, still somewhat confused about the blush on her face but considered it to be caused by their little battle, and instead decided to focus on their main goal here: the ice cream!
Strawberry. A fruit. He knew it! His grin that followed this realization quickly softened into a smile when he noticed her shining, literally glowing. It even paled the sun’s rays and lightened her features, giving a more prominent outline to her blonde hair and light skin as well. This glow was what drew Yoru in even when he saw her kill drones in the battle arena with solidified light, and he couldn’t take his eyes away until it was his turn to order and pay. He got his chocolate-lemon duo and gave the necessary money to the vendor and backed up, already licking at the ice cream to prevent it melting too soon.
Him being busy eating the ice cream at least gave him the time to listen to her without much interruption. Much. “You seem to be doing fine for me. I mean, I am weird too, but everyone is weird. You know what happened at the meeting, so really, you are way better at people-ing than some of us. You are at least nice.” He complimented her off-handedly, as if it was just natural and not at all a special thing to say.
The cone of ice cream faltered in his hand as the lemon already started melting from his body heat and drizzled off on its side. “Why are you talking about romance novels now?” He stared at her for a few moments, expression nearly horrified by the probability of talking about sappy novels with a girl out in the open while eating ice cream. Somehow that mental image was wrong, but he did not know why. Luckily, she caught on and explained herself again, which made him sigh in relief. He went back to lick the melting ice cream as fast as possible to still enjoy its flavor.
“No offense taken. As I have said, you are fine.” His chocolate was mostly gone by this time, but that annoying lemon was still melting. Dang it. “Instead of explaining yourself, you can just act the way you want. If people can’t take the time to figure you out, they are not worth dealing with either.” It might have been a weird advice taking into account everything that happened on the rescue meeting, but that time, Yoru wasn’t exactly focusing on making friends. He was more focused on redirecting harm from his best friend, so he gave no chance for Emi or anyone else to know their personality better. He had priorities, and established friendships were always on top of his list.
Instead of sitting down, he just put one leg on the bench and rested his arms on it while keeping the melting ice cream in check. “Man, where is Frigiman when you need him.” He muttered. If nothing else, Maxi was at least useful to have around when eating ice cream. It certainly held out longer with the walking freezer around.
He hummed approvingly as Relena admitted she had to be more outspeaking. That was always a good start. Being straightforward can make life easier, though at the same time, wearing one’s heart on their sleeve can cause hurt much easier as well. Yoru nearly sputtered when Relena mentioned him again. “Kind? Me? I mean, have you seen me? Come on, even you know you are just making things up now.” He turned his head to the other side, hoping his red ears were conveniently hidden by his mess of hair.
He only turned back when she started talking about the rescue operation, and watched her carefully for the truth. Looking down at her, he could feel the determination and resolve emanating from her even on top of the light her body was giving out.
He grinned, reaching out to lock that pinky with his own. “Right back at you. I will not accept any half-assed attempt at the rescue operations, you have to give it your all. Go big, or go home!” He shook Relena’s hand. “Shine bright out there and show them the 1-A pride!”
With the blood oath done, Yoru also sat down on the bench sideways, facing Relena, one leg pulled up and resting on its surface, while the other planted on the ground beside it. His ice cream was nearly gone, only a little bit of cone and lemon flavor remaining.
“Is the strawberry any good? Lemme get a taste.” He was already leaning forward, harmless flame crown still shining, to lick at whatever amount of ice cream Relena still had with her, uncaring about social boundaries and personal auras even though she had just told him moments ago she wasn’t exactly comfortable with physicality. That was a bad habit, Yoru being too direct with people he barely knew. He was even ready to wrestle for a lick. Well, not really. But the intention was there.

❝You're showing me colours of the sky, But all I see is Grey❞ 826 w. kenjutsu-f | reinforcement-f | radiant dawn-e When Yoruhi had mentioned having one more friend, Relena smiled so wide that she felt her cheeks would burst. No one had ever really outright called her a friend before, so it felt nice to receive the recognition. Especially so directly. It took her aback at how forward he was in his declaration and even more so when he vouched for Ryuusei.
It was clear at the meeting what kind of person Yoruhi was. He was behaving overly aggressive on purpose...she saw that now. After finding out what kind of person he was from the day's combat exercise. At the time, she was so focused on getting them to stay that Relena didn't notice the strong friendship that the two shared. In front of all those people, Yoruhi cast aside his ego to defend Ryuusei. How does one gain such a bond? Talking alot? 'Hanging out?' She wasn't sure, since she didn't have much success in performing either.
"Gah!" She exclaimed upon noticing how close Yoruhi had gotten. Don't scare me like that...
As they ate away at their ice cream, Relena mused about the ideas that he was sharing. He was right, of course. Acting the way I want, eh? Hm...but who am I? Question for the ages.
For most of her life, she had been closed off to others. Her stare could cut like a knife and her words were always short and concise. It hurt to not join in conversations, but she passed it off as a perk of being a wallflower. But UA changed that. Somehow her mentality changed at the aspect of her goal to become a hero. More motivated and more emotional about her beliefs.
The crown of flame burned brightly from Yoruhi, accenting his hair in a brilliant glow that seemed to calm Relena. To have such a magnificent quirk must truly be a blessing. The fire was a physical representation of the drive that she could feel emanating from the hero standing before her and it only made her smile ever more warmly.
A slight jolt went through her as he readily accepted her pinky vow with just as much enthusiasm as she had. It was both refreshing and exhilarating at the same time to see a person as driven to become the best as she. A sense of rivalry even threatened to blossom in her mind as she nodded firmly.
"Yes exactly! We're gonna rescue the hell out of those people! We'll rescue them so hard that they won't ever need rescuing again! We're just that good!"
She leaned back against the bench after her explosive declaration and casually licked at the ice cream. It was beginning to soften ever slightly, much like her own demeanor. The day wasn't too terribly warm, so she could take her time at eating eat without fear of catching a brain freeze. But then a whole other dilemma presented itself.
Yoruhi leaned in close to get a taste of her ice cream, which sent every electron in her body to explode. She seized up as he got closer and her eyes widened nervously. Wait wait stop! What's with this all of a sudden? What do I-
Her body moved on it's own as Relena thrust her hand forward and plopped the frozen pink cream onto Yoruhi's nose. Just light enough to coat the tip of his nose. She just kind of looked at him as the emanating heat from his crown caused the cream to drizzle slightly down the cone. And then, from deep down inside her she felt something. From in her gut, building up to her chest at the sudden sight before her.
Relena burst into a full, bawdy laugh that was so hard she doubled over, still holding the ice cream against Yoruhi's nose. Her face was red and she felt tears build up from the force of the emotion as she clutched her stomach. She didn't know why it was so funny or even if it truly was comical, but the feeling was there regardless and she loved that she could experience a feeling of joy like this. She took the cone back, now leaking quite profusely onto the ground.
The air moved around her and, as her head swam, she couldn't prevent herself as she leaned forward toward Yoruhi. She planted a soft kiss on his cheek. It was only for a very brief moment and Relena had already pulled her head back within the span of a couple of seconds.
D-Did I j-just...
Her eyes turned to giant orbs as panic set in. Steam was bursting out of her ears as her mind went into overdrive. What did I-? Why did I? Oh hell, I-I gotta-
"Er-I'm sorry! Please forgive me! I gotta go!"
Relena shot up from the bench in one quick motion and spun on her heel to make a tactical retreat. No, she needed to call it what it was. Running away. She was running away. Because she wanted to die from embarrassment at her own stupid feelings. [Attempt to leave]

I see you through the flood See you through the fire See you through the storms-a-raging
❧ Despite being standoffish, as she had said, Relena was incredibly responsive. That, for Yoru, made communication much easier. With people who hid their feelings behind a poker-face, like Ryuu, he had to trust their honesty to get along with, as was the case with his best friend. But with people who could be as responsive as Relena ended up to be, he could easily gauge if he made a mistake in a move or didn’t. Usually, he could care less if he hurt someone’s feelings, but when it came to friends, it made him happy to know his personality is well-received.
It was also good to know that his words were having an effect on her. Relena seemed to really think about the things he said, which made it all the more worthy. He was not good at giving advice – he usually just told people to do what he thought was right rather than tell them to do what was best for them. In most cases, it just did not work out. But maybe she could get some benefit out of this.
The pinky vow was done, and it seemed to fire Relena up even more than she appeared the first time she offered. Her words, however, barely made any sense to him, and he had to laugh and furrow his brows at her. “What kind of logic is that?” But his words were nearly muffled and breathy from the laugh, though he got his bearings back once he plopped down on the bench next to her.
Leaning forward to taste Relena’s ice cream, he was half expecting an angry retort, the ice cream disappearing out of his reach, or Relena standing to get away as he got too close. He certainly did not expect to have ice cream showed into his face. Literally. He halted in the movement, leaning slightly back to at all see what was happening, because he suddenly only saw pink and nothing else. The cream was melting already, and even the one that got on his nose was softening by the moment. Yoru was cross eyed as he stared at the pinkness, comically sticking his tongue out to lick it – and of course, failing miserably –, and it was Relena’s voice that made him look back at her.
Her laugh was hearty, honest, and contagious. Yoru found himself laughing as well, although definitely softer than she did, because come on, he just had cold cream shoved into his face. “You little!” He growled, laugh turning into a smirk without any mirth behind it. “This is what I get for asking nicely?” He did not, even he knew that, but it was still in his nature to playfully berate her for it. He doubted she heard it from her laugh either way. But this laugh was the most fitting for her, perfectly matching the shine she was giving of, and Yoru couldn’t help but wait until she was done, dumb smile still on his face, nose pink from the strawberry, staring at her brightness.
Then air was caught in his lungs.
He could feel the soft lips, the warm breath on his skin, the touch of something precious, then panic set into a pair of emerald eyes before he could even make a reaction that was more than his dumb, wide-eyed face and lack of voice. She was moving, sudden and swift, and he was sure he had the physical capability to reach out and stop her, be fast and precise enough to catch her wrist so she won’t go. But his brain failed him, as even he needed at least some brain cells to operate his reflexes. “What? But---“ He had no smarter things to say, and by the time he could feel the wind on his skin again, she already turned her back and ran.
He felt he could breathe again. No. Maybe he breathed for the first time in what seemed to be ages.
He jumped to his feet too late. She was already out of sight, and so he had no opportunity to ask her about what had just happened. Because seriously, what had just happened?!?!
His nose was still pink, and he made no move to wipe it off.
