There was so much to take in since coming to Yuuei Academy, and not only was the school and its campus a lot on its own, but arriving and enrolling just before the upcoming Sports Festival practically multiplied that mental load. Having gotten lost a couple of times in his previous attempts to navigate the school, Takumi was slowly but surely starting to find his confidence when it came to journeying through the academic labyrinth and luckily all of the attention being focused on where most of the events would take place, it became rather easy for the boy to find the main alley purely based off of the general foot traffic of others. Even more lucky for Takumi was the fact that he had a meeting with some of his classmates and other future comrades for the Rescue course earlier, so he not only already found his way to the Main Alley before, but he was practically already there.
Now that the meeting with everyone was over, there was just so much for Takumi to do with his now free time in this bustling social hub. So many people were walking around with their friends, or solo, exploring the various clubs that had set up booths as a means of recruiting new members and garnering attention, or selling food as a means of fundraising for their clubs or possibly the school in general. Takumi went to a really small school that didn't do anything like this prior to coming to Yuuei, so a lot of the deeper details would be missed by the boy, but the general energy of everyone buzzing around and the grand scale that he was witnessing was all just so amazing, if a tad bit intimidating.
What to do, what to do... Takumi would voice his thoughts aloud, the actual volume being drowned out by the general chatter of everyone else in the area socializing, as well as just all the other background noises filling the area, to the point where even he didn't hear the words that his thoughts pushed into reality. Takumi would wander around somewhat aimlessly and dedicate several seconds to reading the signs of each booth he passed by and just observing what they all generally looked by.
With the few interactions that he had been involved in with other students, Takumi was on his way to building up friendships, but it seemed that none of those budding friendships would be around at that moment to keep him company. Hye-Rin was doing her own thing somewhere, probably training for the Sports Festival herself, and all the students that Takumi met during the earlier meeting were probably off doing their own things and personal training as well.
Maybe I should go look for one of them, see what they're up to... This time, Takumi's thoughts wouldn't slip out through his voice and instead remain in his mind as he pondered what to do at that moment. A small bout of guilt could be felt in the pit of his stomach, thinking back to that meeting and wondering if he should be somewhere else training.
He knew he should have been training to some extent, so as to not let any of his classmates down, but a bigger part of him felt that there was no reason to be doing that right now, for several reasons. It wasn't like a couple hours of training crammed in before his event after fifteen years of never doing much with his quirk besides trying to make pretty looking and delicious tasting whipped cream toppings would actually help him develop game changing skills that would make an actual difference in the Sports Festival when the time came.
Even if there was a chance that it might, just how would he go about doing this training? Takumi didn't know the first thing about any of this sort of stuff, and perhaps finding one of the other students that had more skills and a better mindset and work ethic for these things might have been helpful, but it wasn't like he knew where to find them. Maybe he could pull out his phone and try checking in with that online chatroom, but Takumi would have felt like a jerk for standing in a crowded area with all of these people and just staring down at his phone like a jerk that couldn't be bothered to socialize with anyone around him.
Okay, I'll walk around a bit more and see what I can find... maybe bump into someone from earlier and ask if they want to train or do something, and if I don't find anyone or anything to do I'll go back to my room and check the chatroom.
Takumi wouldn't even realize that he was once again voicing his thoughts at a normal conversational volume, mostly because of all the loud noises and droning chatter of everyone crowding the area and drowning out his own words, but also partly because he was so lost in his own thought process and excessively focused inward. His mind was becoming introspective to the point where he was almost losing sight of his surroundings and diving deep into the abyss of his own imagination. Takumi began walking again, keeping his eyes open and glancing around trying to see if he recognized anyone, but his own focus was still inward and causing him to not notice almost anything as he walked around, with his body only not bumping into other people rudely because of sheer semi-mentally present reflex.

The sports festival had left her feeling a bit hectic in all honesty. It was more than a little bit of a struggle balancing everything she needed to do, from having had to have prepared a class president speech she had to present to the school and all the visiting parents and pros (one that she had promptly burnt on stage much to Junko’s frustration. She’d have to remember to apologize for that when she could). She’d had to help with the art club display…well she hadn’t HAD to but it had felt nice to, and she felt her more cartoonish style of drawing added a bit of variety to the drawings they were offering. She’d also been training non stop for the festival events she signed up for, working hard on her stamina and her speed thanks to a technique that Darren had been helping her develop, and ON TOP OF ALL THAT she was still managing to somehow find time to actually try out the other booths and games around the place! Jesus Christ she was pretty sure she didn’t have an ounce of free time these past few days! At the very least she could say that she was enjoying everything she was doing, from the training to the help with the art club, but damn she wanted to just relax a little for a bit and enjoy the other booths at her leisure.
As such though Yumi had managed to find a bit of free time that she wasn’t spending with Robin or Yusaku or Darren and could finally devote a little to herself. Sadly what came with her free time was the realization that, on her own, it was very easy for her to succumb not only to a mild sense of boredom, but also decision overload. There was so much going on with the festival, and so much she could or even should be doing, that finding a booth that caught her attention enough to overcome the decision overload she was suffering wasn’t exactly easy. She was left wondering the alley of booths and the like wondering which of them was worth devoting her time to, and sadly coming up with squat, just leaving herself to wonder without any real aim among the games and the like.
She knew at the very least she should offer her friends the courtesy of checking out their own club’s booths. Yusaku had joined the robotic’s club right? Yeah it would only be fair to go and check that out while she could, but then again Darren, Kirk, and even Elise now…? Yeah they were all in the sports club weren’t they? As important as Yusaku was, there was no arguing with math there and she should definitely be seeing the sports clubs booth, assuming they even had one. Knowing Darren’s fascination with football they probably set up a penalty kick booth or whatever they were called. Those games where you had to try and hit targets with football shots. Yeah, sounded like his and Kirk’s style, getting people’s blood pumping with that and the like…
Yumi was so lost in her thoughts about what she should be doing that she didn’t really realize where she was going. She usually had a nact for what she called ‘crowd dodging’, the ability to practically run through a crowd of people and not actually bump into anyone, but right now at a walking pace she just had no concept of her own path or what was ahead of her, and found herself meeting with someone else’s forehead, an unsatisfying ‘clonk’ signalling the two of them bumping heads in this little instance, followed by the redhead whining softly as she rubbed her reddened forehead, thankfully not landing on her ass but very caught off guard. Geeze how bad had she been lost in her own thoughts not to notice another HEAD on a collision course with her own!?
“Ow ow ow!” She whined, rubbing her head for a moment till she lowered a hand to actually see who she’d bumped into, an apologetic look all over her face. “G-god I’m so sorry I had no idea where I was going.” She whimpered for a moment as a last throb pulsed through her forehead before the sudden collision started to ease off on her, lowering both of her hands and shaking her head about, as if that would somehow make it better, raising her hands right back in in an apologetic gesture. “I-I really am so so SO sorry about that! A-are you visiting from off campus?” She asked, having not seen his face around before today (though really with her Memory she wouldn’t be able to tell if he was a new student or not with much surety) “Bet running into someone like me wasn’t exactly the best introduction to the school…”
She offered her hand with a sheepish smile, still wincing a little from the pain in her forehead. “N-name’s Yumi. Class 1-C president…heh, if you can believe it after that blunder.~”

With most of his mental faculties still being focused and directed inward, Takumi would barely have any sense of his surroundings while he walked around in an almost zombie like fashion, wading through the various people of the crowd that filled up the area. It was bodily instinct alone that allowed Takumi to wade through the sea of bodies surrounding him as his eyes focused on the bright and fancy signs set up by all the different clubs to help draw attention to their respective booths. His eyes would still be tilted upwards slightly as his head swiveled from right to left, but the general rotation, along with his forward directed foot plodding, would be abruptly interrupted by someone else's forehead slamming into his own.
Oww- Ah!" Not much more could come out of Takumi's mouth as his eyes clenched shut from the pain, which wasn't actually all that much but being caught off guard while both of them walking into each other adding a bit to it, and his hands instinctively shooting up to press against his forehead and apply pressure to the area... because for some reason pressing his fingers up against the slightly red mark now on his forehead would somehow help small amount of pain subside.
Oh! I'm sorr- Takumi finally opened his eyes and saw a girl with hair more red than a tomato and longer than a line out the door at a Moonbucks Cafe during peak hours, also seemingly in a fair amount of likely exaggerated pain from the collision. Takumi's instincts compelled him to immediately apologize to the girl for walking into her because of his tendency to zone out in these types of environments, but his attempt would be stopped by the girl doing the same.
Takumi watched as the girl with an expression of contrition pressed her hands against her forehead, much how he had just done seconds earlier, before shaking off the incurred headache and doubling down on her apology, this time asking if he was a visitor. As the seconds passed by and he had more time to actually process what just happened, along with seeing the girl jump into her own apology despite the pain, Takumi mentally fell back into a slightly more relaxed state of mind and smiled leading into his response.
No no no, that was totally my fault... Takumi's smile would persist as he brought up both hands to about chin level and waved them away from each other and back together, as if metaphorically waving off the girl's apology because it wasn't need. I'm sorry... I wasn't paying attention while walking around and I sort of zoned out for a second...
Takumi chuckled when the girl made a small quip about their encounter not being the best introduction to the school for him, meeting her offer of a handshake with a more confident smile now. I'm Takumi, from class 1-B. Nice to meet you!
Not wanting to let a silly accident ruin Yumi's day nor his own, Takumi immediately went into engagingly friendly mode, making sure his smile and body language reinforced what he said. He didn't want her to think that their collision was her fault, nor did he want her to carry around any bad feelings for the rest of the day because of this. With the way she jumped to apologize let him know that she wasn't angry at him for what happened and he felt that his reaction would let her know the same on his behalf.
So you're class president of 1-C? That's gotta be pretty cool! Does that mean you're busy with a lot of stuff here today? Wait! Did I get in the way of something?! Do you need to be going somewhere else right now? Wow! I'm REALLY sorry now...
Takumi wasn't afraid about how their paths crossing might have ruined her day before aside from that initial instance of seeing her in pain exactly as he was, mostly because of her demeanor once she started speaking to him, but as soon as he found out she held a position of responsibility he began to have a mini panic attack about how he might actually be getting in her way. He didn't know much about what a class president was supposed to do in general, but he figured that whatever responsibilities Yumi held because of the title were likely doubled or tripled because this was Yuuei Academy, and then doubled or tripled again because the Sports Festival was kicking into gear and everyone was busy with their own stuff. Even if she didn't have anything to do because of being president, there was still the chance that she was competing in some events and was on her way to be training right now, or helping out with a booth for a club that she belonged to.
At this point, the bright smile would melt slightly into an expression of mild discomfort, not enough to make it look like he was in a really bad mood or terrified, but enough to display that his mind was in the middle of a tiny downward spiral over something that he wouldn't actually think of as a big deal if he was looking back on it with a clear head, but in the moment with all the craziness of the Main Alley going on and the energy of the Sports Festival his mind was definitely working a bit differently and less objectively.

Yumi was rubbing her head still but a little less frantically, much like him she seemed to have that natural instinct of adding pressure to a potentially forming bruise should somehow ease the pain. I mean, hey, in a weird way it worked. You replaced stinging pain with a dull pulse for a little bit till it settled down, though really she should be flipping a coin on which one was actually worse. Variety may have been the spice of life but she didn’t think that saying was too encouraging when it came to accidental pain like this.
Seeing the boy also break into apologies she actually felt extra bad that he felt he had the need to apologies too, getting just faintly flustered as she waved off his own apology, not dismissively, but trying to be polite in a way as she countered it with her own. “Oh no no no. Don’t you worry. Totally my fault. I’ve been so clogged up in my head today I just had no idea where I was going. Really, totally my fault!~”
She broke into a few light giggles as it was clear neither of them were mad at the other, and admitted to herself her initial reactions may have been just a little exaggerated. She blamed anime. Whenever people so much as stubbed a toe in those cartoons it was as if every nerve in their body was on fire…which okay fair, when you stub your toe it does feel like that, but with her habit for making expressions when trying to draw and her general habits of adopting habits from anime, her exagerations had been maybe a little more than overblown for such a relatively light butting of heads. She gave her head one last rub before easing up on it, meeting the boy with a warm smile as she took him in.
Really now Yumi just did not have a good eye for detail or a strong memory, so for the life of her even when they introduced themselves as a student Yumi had no idea if she’d ever seen them before as a starter, and beyond that she found it hard to catch any details of him she’d mark as memorable. For someone like Darren she’d mentally lock onto the fact he had blonde hair on top and was a brunette on the sides, with Melody the blue hair, with Yusaku the fact he was a robot cat, but this just…he wasn’t bland by any means, but she wasn’t locking onto anything just yet. He seemed pleasant at the very least which was always nice to see, and already she felt she’d picked the right person to bump into at a busy sports festival.
Ya know…if she HAD to pick someone to bump into in the first place. Preferrably that would have just never happened in the first place but ya know.
“Takumi Takumi Takumi, B B B.” Not trusting her memory in the slightest she repeated the vital bits of info there to herself to try and make sure they set in, smiling extra warmly towards him as she quickly explained. “Sorry about that, half the time I can’t even remember the names of my own classmates so just a precaution. I always feel so embaressed when I forget the names of my school mates. Still though, I can’t say I’ve seen you about before. Are you new to the school or have we just been managing to avoid eachother?~” Her question ended with a cheeky smirk, just trying to be playful about the fact she definitely didn’t recognize him, adding. “I mean hey if you are new you picked one hell of a time to join, everyone’s on edge and ready to kick your ass if you signed up for the events. Must be kinda stressful I imagine?”
With Takumi’s worries that he was interrupting her busy work, she quickly rose her hands to try and stop his worries with a physical gesture and a sheepish smile as she quickly tried to hush his worries. “Oh no no no! Don’t worry! Honestly this is like, the first free time I’ve gotten all week. Been busy training, helping out the arts club at their booth, running this way and that. I even had to help show a new student in my class around at one point. Really it’s been one hell of a week, but really. I am free as a bird right now. If anything I just got a story to giggle about later so you’ve literally got nothing you need to threat about.”
She hoped to fully set him at ease with an extra warm smile, ever friendly and welcoming herself, she didn’t want someone else to be worrying like that. “So Takumi, where you heading to a booth or…what? I mean you even said you were a little zonked out. Tired from training maybe?”

Takumi's awkward innocence would inevitibly lead him to go from ping ponging enthusiastic apologies between himself and Yumi to laughing along with her at what looked like a potentially never ending chain of contrition. Luckily, neither of them were actually angry or even necessarily upset with each other and both wanted to assume the responsibility of just being a little absent minded for a moment in a crowded area. The constant head nodding and waving as if to wave away the other person's apology turned into a common laughter and Takumi really felt that that alone was enough to really open up a friendly path way to some common ground and interaction.
After the subsequent introductions between the two Clumsy Cleos, Yumi didn't seem as if she recognized Takumi, which was understandable considering that he had only been living at Yuuei for a total of 40 some odd hours and had yet to actually attend a class. It went without saying that Takumi didn't know Yumi at all besides the fact that she was a student and the name that she had just provided. Takumi watched as Yumi said his name in triplicate and then followed it up with "B, B, B," although the three B's would confuse him.
B B B? What's that mean?
As Takumi tried to process the second half of Yumi's memorization, the girl would give him a smile and an explanatory apology followed asking him if he was new to the school or if they just avoided each other up until now by chance. A small chuckle, really more of a short exhale of air puffing out through his nose accompanied by a smile, came from Takumi as Yumi explained how she often forgot the names of her own classmates. Takumi would wait to answer her question, letting Yumi make another quip about picking a great time to come to Yuuei with the Sports Festival going on and how stressful it must have been.
Yeah, I'm actually pretty new... like less than two days here, haha... Takumi would break between the different parts of his response with a more friendly, audible chuckle as if it was more of a transition between the ideas of what he was saying rather than anything actually funny happening. I... I don't feel too stressed out... at least not about people wanting to mess with me or anything like that. I mean, I signed up for the Rescue Course event and all, but who would want to do anything to someone in that event, right? I am a little stressed about my event though, but only because I've never trained or done anything like this before...
Takumi's smile and laugh became distinctly more sheepish as he finished talking about his own participation in the Sports Festival and how his absolute lack of experience and training partially dictated his feelings. With how much everyone was either focusing on training, meeting up to plan training, or discussing training in the online chatroom, Takumi was starting to feel like he wasn't pulling his weight. He had never done any training before in his life aside from general physical education classes that his previous school required, and now everyone was kicking themselves into high gear and working hard while he was just walking around and just trying to get acclimated to the new environment. It definitely wasn't the best of feelings, but Takumi was pretty lost when it came to that kind of stuff and any attempts to train, at least without guidance of a teacher or at least a more experienced student, would likely just be wasted time and energy. At most, Takumi would likely only be able to get any real benefits from jogging in order to improve his endurance.
When Takumi thought about how most of the other students were training and became worried about his clumsiness interrupting or delaying any training that Yumi was trying to get done, she wasted no time in reassuring him that his fears weren't the case and that she was actually enjoying some free time, something she admittedly didn't have much of until now. Part of him felt just as guilty for possibly ruining what she considered to be the first block of free time she had all week, but again Yumi quickly dispelled that fear with her generally inviting warmth and friendliness, describing herself as being free as a bird and this sudden encounter as a story to tell later and giggle about.
Takumi felt his heart relaxing once more with a calmer, less awkward smile once again finding its way across his face as Yumi went on to ask him about what he was up to. By his own admission, Takumi was a little zoned out when they bumped into each other. Umm, I was, uh... I don't know where I was going actually... A look of confusion showed on Takumi's face as he tried to think through what he was doing before he bumped into Yumi. I think I was just walking around... I don't really know much about anything that's going on at Yuuei, besides the Sports Festival, and last time I tried to walk around I ended up getting lost while looking for the cafeteria. At least this place was easy to find because of everyone flocking to this area... But yeah, nothing going on, just exploring...
Takumi trailed off at the end of his own explanation and then paused slightly while he turned his head slightly and started looking around, hoping to find some spark of inspiration for a better answer. After a brief moment of scanning, Takumi found nothing that piqued his mind and quickly shook his head as if coming back to reality.
Yeah, I really don't know most of this. I got a snack earlier from one of the food stands, but haven't really checked out any clubs or anything like that yet. What about you? I mean, I know you said this was your free time, but I'm sure you were heading somewhere before you zoned out, right?
Takumi figured that even with this being her free time, Yumi was looking for other friends to hang out with or some food to get, probably to replenish her energy after some intense training or just a hectic schedule in general.

Yumi smiled brightly as she found out he was definitely new like she expected. She never trusted her memory, hence why she not only repeated his name but also his class letter to herself before the continued talking. At the talk of him signing up for the rescue event she tipped her head to the side. Anyone looking for a fight was definitely in one of the other events but at the same time. “Well really I was more talking about the fact they’re all looking for sparring partners and stuff. But yeah, even with everyone getting competitive, the rescue event will probably rely a whole lot on teamwork, so you’re definitely good there.~” Though hearing he was still stressed out, she tipped her head to the side and wondered what was up, hearing it was just natural caution she smiled warmly and pepped up a bit. “Oh I’m sure you’ll be fine. The sports festival is the first but it probably won’t be the last. I’d just focus on what’s ahead of you and not worry too much about it. Yeah?”
They at least seemed to be on the same page when it came to how lost they felt today. He’d just been following the crowd while Yumi had been a little bit…decision blind? Was that the term? It felt accurate yeah. She was just left thinking over too many options and shook her head mentally at her own inability to make a decision. At the question of if she’d been going anywhere she just let out a light chuckle and rubbed the back of her neck. “Nah I didn’t really have much in mind either. I was thinking of maybe finding my friends booths, but then which of them should I see first, should I go to my best friends, my classmates, my boyfriends. Really I coulda just rolled a dice but then I started thinking about where I’d find a dice.” She shrugged with a light blush. “Yeah er…if it isn’t easy to tell, I can get…over-thinky? My mind starts racing them I have no idea what I’m doing by the end of it.” She bobbed her shoulders in a shrug, folding her arms before pointing her thumb down the length of the main alley. “You er…wanna see if we can find anything fun? I mean youre new here right? Could be good sticking with someone you know…well technically, I mean we only just met but-“
Before she got rambling again she flailed her arms about to physically stop herself from saying anything further that could be dumb or embaressing before gesturing down the alley again. She knew how bad she was with words so whenever she caught herself she tried to stop herself from rambling off and on again. “Bottom line…I’m gonna try and hit up a booth or two while I got time. You fancy joining me?” She was a little hopeful of a yes to be sure, always eager to make new friends in the school.

After confirming Yumi's suspicions regarding his own tenure at Yuuei Academy, along with reassuring her that she wasn't just forgetting who an old classmate was, Takumi found himself telling the girl about his own feelings about the Sports Festival experience so far. It was nice of her to voice some concern over any potential stress he was feeling, and funnily enough he completely misinterpreted Yumi's thoughts when it came to the stress that came with the event. Takumi mostly read into her words as the implication that other students would be on edge and socially aggressive, possibly to the point of looking to start fights, but in reality Yumi was really just referring to a general strain in tensions between students especially when it came to looking to cram in some last minute training. Takumi's original inference was fair, considering how heated things got at that meeting for the other Rescue Course students earlier, but perhaps it was still a bit silly of him to immediately jump to that conclusion.
Ahhh, yeah... A few people I've come across have been getting pretty... uhh 'amped up' about training? But I can't blame them or anything like that. I'm focusing on my own event for now, but I'm not too scared about failing or anything, since this is literally like a starting point for me. No matter how good or bad I do, it really just serves as a good base for me to look back on, especially with all the teachers watching even though I haven't even met my teacher yet...
Takumi laughed as he trailed off the end of his little ramblings about his own stress and focus regarding the Sports Festival. With the exception of the tension from that prior meeting, most of his experiences at this school, so far, had been positive and he had been keeping himself in a good mood throughout his adventuring around the campus as well. Then he suddenly felt a little bad, just slightly guilty really, over how much she was asking him and appearing to want to be helpful without himself doing the same.
What about you though? I mean, I'm assuming you aren't doing the Rescue Course since I didn't see you at the meet up, but are you doing something like the Obstacle Course or the Fighting Tournament?
After Takumi's super long tangent about how he was just sort of zoned out for most of the time he spent wandering the Main Alley, with no real goal in mind as he explored, Yumi mentioned that she was in a similar predicament. Apparently she was contemplating visiting a few booths run by different friends, but was having difficulty deciding which one to start with, which led to another predicament involving figuring out where to find dice when she decided that using such a tool would be the best way to make that choice. Takumi burst into a light, but expressive, laughter as Yumi bashfully shrugged off the dice idea and admitted to her tendency to let her mind run through ideas too quickly to the point of ending up with no clear answer.
Afterwards, Yumi gestured towards one end of the alley and asked if Takumi felt like joining her along in her wandering. Takumi nodded his head slightly with an innocent grin as she mentioned grouping together with someone familiar could be beneficial despite them having just met. Despite his posture and face projecting an agreement, Takumi wouldn't be able to verbally answer the call to adventure before Yumi abruptly reverted back to waving her hands again as if in a small state of panic, trying to elaborate on her plans to check out a few booths while she still had the time.
Yeah! Sounds like fun! Takumi would begin stepping in the direction that Yumi pointed to with her thumb a few seconds prior, maintaining a swivel in his neck to keep eye contact for an extra few seconds. So, do you wanna check out some random booths or visit the ones with your friends first? I don't mind either way... although I guess this doesn't help since you couldn't decide before either...
Takumi would quickly slip into a bashful, almost awkward, laughter and scratch the back of his neck as he tried to joke off the realization that he basically just asked Yumi to make decisions that she literally just admitted to being unable to make on her own. In his own slight state of panic, Takumi would quickly remove his hand from behind his head and perform another small "wave off" motion before dropping both arms to his side and speaking back up again.
Orrr I guess we could just walk along and just see what seems most fun as we pass them by, right? That way we don't have to think so hard trying to decide? Takumi felt that maybe letting things be a bit more thoughtless and decided in the moment, once they were actually going on their merry way, might be the best was to proceed. At the very least, just going ahead without too many preconceived ideas on where to go would help slow down Yumi's knack for overthinking things and possibly ending up without making any decisions again.
Regardless of how Yumi responded to his idea, Takumi would be ready and willing to walk along with her and visit whichever booth she decided upon, whether it be decided upon in her mind beforehand or just in the moment as they passed by. He was just happy to be exploring the area with someone's company and not just wandering around aimlessly in a sea full of strangers.

“Yeah that’s pretty much what I was referring to.” She jumped in at the comment about everyone being amped up. IN no way did she think it was a bad thing, especially since so many of her friends were some of those amped up energetic little nuts and she loved them to bits, heck she’d even been adopting some of their habits and getting pretty amped up herself, but she tended to express her energy more with affection and intimacy than challenging people to fights or dragging them off to train with her, so it wasn’t nearly as potentially toxic to be around her.
“But yeah definitely, can’t really blame them. It’s just…the atmosphere? Everyone knows the stakes. They’re either trying to prove themselves to the people around them, or prove themselves to…well, themselves. Its really just a tense and heated atmosphere but in no way is it a bad thing ya know?~ It’s a great chance for everyone to bring out the best in themselves, buuuut…also the worst in themselves if they go a little overboard.” She smirked weakly and chuckled a little nervously, toying with the base of her ponytail and ruffling her hair up a little bit in the process. “Its good you aren’t scared of a little failure though for sure. Definitely shows you’ve got some confidence behind you if it isn’t too big a worry for you.” She turned back to a more bright smile, hoping her presence acted as more encouraging than awkward to this new fellow. “Hey if anything, if you’re so new here. You have an advantage. You’ll get so much information about all your classmates quirks they won’t have about yours!~”
The rescue course had some sort of meetup? That was news to her. She hadn’t heard about anything similar coming from the obstacle course, but it was a great to hear that the rescue team were working together like that. Naturally the two events were very distinct on a surface level anyway, the obstacle course a contest of speed and agility, while the rescue course had to have people work well in tandem with one another rather than in opposition. The best way to shine was to be a strong cog in the machine when it came to a rescue like that.
“Oh er, obstacle course and the tournament for me. For the obstacle course, I recently learned how to fly and have bursts of speed using positive and negative charges, so it seemed like the best bet to showcase my talents. As far as the fighting tournament…well I shoot electricity out of my hands. Gotta put that to use somehow and the cross school combat event was just full up.” She chuckled a little. She didn’t fancy her chances so much against her fellow classmates but- “Hopefully I don’t get knocked out of the tournament TOO fast. Gotta leave at least some sort of impression ya know?”
She did worry that she’d leave a poor impression if she got knocked out of the tournament too soon but…no. A failure at peak performance was better than no performance at all. Everyone watching the sports festival surely recognized that right? Everyone in this school where aspiring heroes, and while some were surely meant to rise above the others, Yumi was still gonna have the tenacity to potentially put up a strong fight against whoever rose to win against her. Yeah. She just needed to make sure she made a great impression. It didn’t matter if she won, or lost, or even if she was perfect. She sheerly needed to present the absolute best version of herself that she could in the heat of the moment.
At the prompt that he did wanna hang out with her, Yumi felt a little bit encouraged. In a weird way she’d been reading Takumi as a bit stuff but hearing a chuckle out of him, whether it counted at his own expense or hers with how he’d belatedly realized she already had trouble deciding, helped her ease up around him too and see some chance of them getting along going forward. She let out a hearty giggle of her own and shook her head. “Yeah probably not best to give me even more decisions ontop of the ones I already can’t make ya know?”
With a snicker and a giggle before she eased up and took a calming breath, she kept moving down the alley and nodded along to his next suggestion. “Yeah that is definitely the best bet right now. Ya know this is meant to be my freetime. Why not do just whatever catches my eye yeah? Definitely sounds better than stressing out about who I don’t or do spend time with.” She gave a casual shrug, definitely easing up a fair bit and letting her eyes wander as the two of them went for their little stroll to see what caught their attention. It was definitely pleasant having the stress of the decision fade down her spine and melt into a more relaxing sensation.
Eyes drifting around the multiple stalls and booths, Yumi’s eyes were drawn to a booth that had been set up like a carnival game. A simple pellet gun with some target’s set up in the back. Yumi was a little intrigued, but not entirely fussed on it yet just incase Takumi wasn’t bothered to experience it. Really she could go either way, and that seemed present in her expression alone as she casually gestured towards the booth, shrugging a little to show her mild mix of interest and disinterest.
“You fancy a game? I think it’s free for the first game. Couldn’t hurt to kill some time with a fun little game right?” She tipped her head to the side, but again was easily ready to move on if something caught Takumi’s eye any more. (Really Yumi’s writer was just not very creative when it came to booth ideas and was going with the bare minimum and was open to suggestions)

Even though it wasn't exactly a big misunderstanding, Takumi still found a little humor in his interpretation of Yumi's meaning behind other students being on edge versus what she really meant by the comment. Stress was often painted and perceived in a very negative light, but positive stress was very much real and it was likely that many of the people competing in the Sports Festival were able to take all that stress and channel it into legitimate self improvement and progress. Yumi's explanation was spot on and he couldn't have put it in better words if he tried. This whole place had a special type of energy in the air since Takumi had moved into the Yuuei dormitory, and he had mostly just chalked it up to being something special about Yuuei in general, but maybe a fair amount of this amped up energy that he saw carried around by nearly anybody he encountered was due to the incoming event.
Before Takumi could comment on what Yumi said, she spoke back up past a nervous smirk accompanied by some passive hair twirling to compliment him on his self proclaimed acceptance of a possible failure. She mentioned how his perspective regarding his own upcoming performance, for better or worse, must have meant he carried around a lot of confidence but the reality was contradictory. Still though, Yumi's smile getting brighter was definitely a heartwarming sight for Takumi and she even went further to mention how his being new here gave him an inherent advantage for the competition, even if it wasn't necessarily an advantage that would translate well to the Rescue Course.
Oh, I wouldn't say that it's confidence or anything like that... Takumi laughed a bit more than a chuckle as he played off of Yumi's confidence comments. It's more that, I'm just okay with not being as good as everyone else. Of course, I'd rather not be, but I get it... I've been here a couple of days, everyone else has been here for months and training hard every day. It would be kinda messed up if I was magically at your level after not working as hard, or for as long, as you, you know?
Takumi was hoping that his own explanation behind the acceptance of potential failure wasn't too self deprecating; understanding that his own effort thus far didn't come close to matching everyone else's, and therefore should fairly result in his abilities being below those of everyone else, made perfect sense. Hell, if Takumi outshined most of the other students in the Sports Festival then it might say more about the quality of training that Yuuei provided its students than anything about himself.
After mentioning that he was participating in the Rescue Course, Takumi decided to ask Yumi about her own respective events, to which she responded with the Obstacle Course as well as the fighting tournament that a lot of people seemed pretty anxious for. Without prompting, Yumi explained her decision to try the Obstacle Course because of learning how to fly while utilizing her quirk, although her explanation of using positive and negative charges had Takumi's brain beginning to overload. Just short of having steam spewing out of his ears from the science jargon almost mentally frying him, Yumi would save him by specifying that her quirk was really just shooting electricity out of her hands, although Takumi still didn't know enough about science to piece together how electricity lead to flying.
Ahh, I'm sure you won't get knocked out right away... I mean, I don't know what a lot of people can do but shooting electricity HAS to be good for stuff like fighting... Takumi would keep a friendly smile while he offered encouraging words to Yumi, although his hands would move up to about chest level with his fingers all pointed forward and slightly spread out while he mentioned electricity, much like Palpatine shooting Force Lightning at someone. ...And even if you did somehow lose early, electricity is pretty flashy, especially if you can fly with it. I can't imagine anybody not being crazy impressed by that. His voice was very uplifted and full of sincere cheer, as opposed to the usual tonality of optimistic concern that people used in order to mask borderline pity whenever they tried to cheer people up with nice words.
Takumi wasn't sure sure if what he said would be helpful for Yumi, but she seemed to be in relatively good spirits regardless so the pressure couldn't have been THAT bad for her. If she cared more about standing out to judges than she did about winning, then maybe that was an easier approach to the competitions for her and would let her be more relaxed when the time came. Luckily it seemed that regardless of how she felt about the events, Yumi was still feeling bright and brimming with enthusiasm to enjoy the present moment, more than eager to explore the main alley for something fun with Takumi's company. When he suggested a potentially more freeform approach to deciding which booth they should check out next, he was met with an adorable giggle from Yumi as she mentioned that not being the best idea, and after she calmed down she seemed up for just wandering around and stopping once they came across a booth that piqued their interests.
Takumi walked along with Yumi, keeping pace to remain beside her rather than following from behind, trying his best to keep his eyes peeled for anything that might seem fun. Even with his mind more focused, Takumi still had a bad habit of missing so many details when it came to his surroundings, it was a miracle that he didn't end up tripping or bumping right into someone else. There were still plenty of attention grabbing games in the area where the pair explored, ranging from things like timed basketball shooting games, to popping balloons stuck against a wall with darts, to tossing plastic rings onto bottlenecks arranged into a square formation, even to games with large buckets tucked away at 45 degree angles with large whiffle balls that needed to be lobbed into them. Eventually, Yumi's eyes were grabbed by a simple target practice game with pellet guns, upon noticing which she would casually, albeit seemingly apathetically, gestured towards it with a shrug.
Sure, looks fun enough... Takumi smiled brightly at Yumi as he walked towards the booth, figuring that the worst thing that could happen was that the game wasn't all that much fun, or that maybe the first game wasn't really free like she thought. Once they approached the booth, Takumi would be ready to compete alongside Yumi once they were cleared to play. Before the game would start, he would still turn to her with a friendly, but slightly daring, smirk. Given the nature of the Sports Festival, maybe we should make this competitive and see who can get the most points on the target?
If Yumi said no for any reason, Takumi would simply offer a more innocent smile and a cordial nod to just play the shooting game at his own pace with no regards for her own target. However, if she agreed to the friendly challenge then Takumi would be ready to really focus his inattentive eyes on his target and try to get as many bullseyes as he possible could.

As the boy walking with her confirmed the idea that they were just comfortable not being as strong as everyone else in their current position, Yumi just gave a calm shrug. “Oh I dunno, these days the mere power of a quirk can mean a lot, but I totally get where you’re coming from. Not everyone can be on the top tier list especially in their first few days, so yeah, its certainly nothing to worry about, but I’d just say don’t count yourself out either.~ Stick to it and you could be on par with even the most diligent of your classmates before you know it. Oh!-“ She stopped as her memory clicked and smiled as she offered the concept of-
“Ya know I heard they’re actually letting a lot of late arrivals, or people who just don’t feel they’ve progressed too much, hang back a year to catch up? Odds are it mightn’t happen, but it’s a rumor in the air. Might be good for you? I mean, ignoring the silly negative idea of staying back a year, you’re a late arrival, and it could be good to stick with people close to your own level right?~”
She hoped her suggestion wasn’t too rude or too insulting, as she genuinely just intended for it to be an idea to help if they were worried about potentially being behind the pack from how late they joined, but she wouldn’t worry too much and just hope it was taken how intended.
When she explained her quirk she could see the other boy getting a bit lost and playfully ruffled their hair. “If it helps, even I don’t understand the science. My pen pal helps me work most of it out and even then she has to put it in dummy terms for me most of the time~” She smiled warmly and continued to listen as he offered the idea that, win or lose, with a quirk like that she was bound to make a splash. Yumi chuckled a little, supposing he was right but-
“Oh having such a big and fancy quirk, and still losing, will just make everyone thing I’m just that terrible.” She stuck out her tongue, clearly just teasing about the possibility and dealing with it with a good sense of humor, ultimately just shrugging it off and holding a confident, warm smile. “But no you’re right. My quirk will at least catch some attention, I just gotta make sure the person using it catches some good attention too ya know? Should all go well, but can never be too cautious when going up against classmates like mine. Everything could go awry when fighting beasts like them.”
Yumi did have a sense of confidence in her skill ever since she’d recovered from Semper Fi and put the extra effort in, but in truth…yeah, she could never be too careful. Her quirk was strong but difficult to control, and with her easily shaken nature she constantly needed to be on her toes when using it or risk harming her friends more in the long run. Mhm. Yeah. Had to just…keep her head in the game as they say.
When they arrived at the game she didn’t get the vibe either of them were ecstatic for the chance to play, but it was a good way to kill a bit of time no? She pulled up one of the pellet guns and smirked at her partner for the game as she loaded in a few pellets and got a good feel for the targets. She’d played games like this before with an old friend of hers who’d sadly ended up leaving school, so she had some practice with similar games and was pretty eager to put her skills to the test after so long, clicking the gun shut and lifting it up.
“I dunno, you sure you wanna make this a competition?~ I fire beams of electricity out of my hands for a living, I’m pretty sure my aim ain’t too bad.~” She stuck her tongue out with a cheeky expression as she pulled her shoulders back and focused her aim, her tongue sticking out of the corner of her lips in an oddly concentrated expression as she lined up her targets and got ready to start.

As the conversation between Takumi and Yumi moved along to the general capabilities among the assortment of students, Yuuei and otherwise, participating in the sports festival, the girl made a good point regarding how the mere possession of a quirk was enough of an advantage to standout among many other people in the world. Takumi sort of forgot just how rare quirks were in general still, especially since coming to Yuuei where everyone seemed to not only have a quirk, but a very impressive one that was probably well suited to heroics as well. Still, Takumi knew that despite his own quirk setting him apart from many of the people he had met in his life so far, his life up until now had been more like a small pond and this new move had suddenly dropped him into a vast ocean of all sorts of bigger fish.
Haha, I suppose you're right... Still, I'm just trying to keep my expectations realistic; it isn't like I'm feeling badly about it or anything... Yumi made some comments about other new arrivals to the school that might be competing with as little experience under their figurative belts as Takumi had. It was a sweet gesture, and one that wasn't lost on the boy at all, even if she might have been afraid of him interpreting it with negative undertones, but he really didn't need any extra cheering up when it came to the likely realities of what he was capable of compared to other. ...Yeah, I see what you mean. Either way, I guess it'll just come down to me finding out when the time comes...
After hearing about Yumi's quirk and mentioning that he didn't know much about electricity nor how it worked, she confided in Takumi that her own knowledge on the subject was also lacking and was mostly supplemented by the help of a smarter pen pal. He smiled back at her warm admission of ignorance, recognizing it for the attempt to open up that it was, but he felt more welcomed by her own chuckle before talking about the risks of having such a flashy quirk like hers.
I'm sure that you'll turn some heads and impress lots of people either way. Like, I'm sure the worst case scenario is even if you do something dumb, there will be a teacher or hero that sees a quirk like that and wants to help train you, ya know?
Hopefully Takumi's reassuring words would be enough to help Yumi, although she really didn't seem like she needed any help with the mental or emotional aspect of the upcoming competition. Perhaps she might feel more nervous on the day of her event and his words might become more useful, but either way he was happy to at least offer more warmth and hopeful sentiments for the time being.
By the time the pair found some booths with games and decided to give one a shot, it only seemed right that in the spirit of the sports festival that they play the shooting game as a competition against each other too. It was a friendly challenge with nothing more than a fun time and perhaps some momentary bragging rights on the line, but the suggestion seemed to elicit a more cheerful and excited reaction from Yumi, her teasing tongue sticking out towards Takumi before they began shooting giving him all the information he needed that this would be fun. A fun, more innocent than smug, grin appeared on Takumi's face as he steadied the weak rifle in kind with Yumi, preparing for the beginning of the competition.
Their rifles aimed at the set up targets and a loud bell DING signaled the beginning of the match, and Takumi closed one eye, braced the gun, and focused on what was in front of him as he pulled the trigger. He missed miserably, the weak projectile being caught by the wall standing behind the targets. Takumi couldn't even believe it, not necessarily out of shock at his failure but moreso out of his lack of situational atunement, and the next few trigger pulls would be carelessly cranked out in a rapid succession (albeit still slow compared to what most kids with decent reflexes might be able to pump out), half of them missing the target altogether like the first shot with a select few poking holes around the outer edges of his target. A few more shots would emerge from the barrel of his poorly aimed gun; a final desperate attempt by the clumsy boy to earn himself some points against the girl he had just valiantly challenged, most of them still completely missing.
Wow... Okay... So I'm really bad at this, I guess... Takumi began his words with a bit of a flabberghasted stupor, but it quickly transitioned into a more joking tone as he began his self assessment of the poor performance in their match. He would set down the gun and turn to Yumi with a hearty chuckle and bright smile before speaking again. How'd you do? I'm just assuming you beat me pretty badly, haha...
Takumi would look over at Yumi's target and glance at how many bullet holes might or might not have been there for a quick second before swiveling his head back to face her again. Regardless of how well or poorly she did, he would still be cheery and in good spirits, ready to play again or move onto a different game if she wanted, or go back to exploring other areas of the main alley as well.
