WORD COUNT: TAGGED: TAGGED: Fluffy The idea from the teachers perspective was relatively simple. The students needed to get a small taste of what going up against a quirk user was like. The only way to do so safely, was to bring the students together three and three. Two active combatants, one that overlooked the spar. It was implied from the teachers side, that there were expected to be minor wounds. Moving to one of the meeting sites for the practice spar, was Rin Kurama, the class president. The pairings of students had been made with the intent of getting everyone to put forth their best. To give them relatively even matchups, to let them find their limits. There was no doubt in Rin's mind that the matchup which she had been given, was for the reason of having her finally reveal her quirk to her class. As if there was a single chance that her real quirk could stand up to the monster she was paired with. Nick Cross. The girl hadn't interacted with him much, Rin still hadn't found the way to communicate with him properly. Their worlds were completely opposite..
The one that was meant to overlook their spar, was a classmate that Rin had never seen show up to classes before. It was a name that she didn't recognize. There were other cases of students never showing up. Several had enrolled into Yuuei because getting in was relatively easy, even with mediocre grades. Being paid a bit of study money to go there, for some it was just free additional income without any desire to be a hero. It meant that, as far as Rin could tell, she was going to end up alone with Nick. In a way, that was fortunate. If the girl could convince him that fighting without anyone to watch over them could be dangerous, perhaps she wouldn't have to fight him at all. One could only hope. In the little practice the two of them had had on the first real day of school, the difference in power had been rather obvious to her. Nick was capable of throwing a baseball fast enough that it physically hurt her. Attempting to take one of his attacks head on would be a one way ticket to the nurses office... Rin knew as much... Yet here she was, having shown up despite it all.... I'll be a stronger heroine tomorrow than I was today.
Fiddling with her raven-black hair, the girl tried to get it all under completely control in a bun. Wearing the U.A tracksuit, the girl was stretching herself on the off-chance that their classmate would show up to oversee the sparring. Jumping a bit in place, the girl had been thinking of a hundred ways to try and contend with Nick Cross if they were to come to blows. None of them resulted in Rin winning. A few of them resulted in an acceptable outcome. Some of them resulted in the girl getting quite hurt, but walking away with no serious complications. With Nick Cross being who he was, paired up with Rin at the expectancy of equal power, from what little she knew of his personality, he wouldn't hold anything back. Getting out of this one with any kind of pride remaining would be difficult. Rin, however, had an ulterior motive. Nick was strong and could be an excellent hero in time. If Rin's weakness was going to have him shunned, shouted at or worse - ridiculed for being cruel to a girl then she would've failed utterly and completely. Heroes needed to be strong, Rin knew as much....

Nick had been waiting. He leaned against the far wall, arms folded, brows knit and forehead creased in clear annoyance. Fate seemed destined to pull himself and this ‘Rin Kurama’ together no matter how hard he wanted to resist. First there had been the baseball exercise, then her beating him to be the first one to undertake the rescue class, then her being voted president over him – an especially sore spot – and now this.
He knew, however, that this exercise presented him with the opportunity to answer some questions that had risen about her in the last couple of weeks. He was not going to let her escape answering him, that he vowed.
He saw Rin, then, shuffling her way in as fragile as ever.
“You’re late, Rin.”
He emerged from the shadows, taking slow, deliberate steps towards her as his eyes sized up her thin form. Like a predator.
“You know, I’ve had a lot of questions for myself, lately.” He spoke conversationally, as if simply discussing last night’s football scores, but an underlying current of menace was most definitely there. “Why would they vote you, over me? Someone with power, training and a Quirk that’s second to none – I’m the natural best fit. Yet they chose you.”
He stopped barely an inch from her and glared down. If he had been cold during their baseball exercise, he was a blizzard now.
“But it’s not just that I’m wondering about. It’s not even the main thing, surprisingly enough. I saw you come out of that house, you see. You were covered in blood. I went in immediately after you and I encountered nothing capable of doing the damage that had been done to you. What happened in there, Rin? Tell me.”
It was not a request: the firmness of his voice made that abundantly clear.

WORD COUNT: TAGGED: TAGGED: Fluffy There had been no indication to Rin, that Nick had already arrived on the scene. Perhaps the boy had chosen to stay hidden. Perhaps something else had been on his mind, leaving him to take some time to gather his thoughts. However, upon her own arrival, he had stepped out of the shadows; With an almost visibly dreadful aura to him. The girl backed up two steps instinctively. Even so, Nick marched over, standing so incredibly close to her. The girl felt even tinier than normal. With the sun behind Nick, Rin was effectively standing in his shadow. An overpowering darkness. "N-no, t-the uhm.. Lesson d-doesn't begin yet.. A-and we don't have an overseer, so... M-maybe we should---" The girl's breathing was stifled, scared. Moving directly towards her was Nick. There was clear aggression coming from Nick, yet it wasn't a form that she usually experienced aggression in. This aggression was cold, freezing, almost like being stuck outside in a snowstorm. Even if Rin tried to take a step back, Nick was quicker. With his presence so in her face the girl was practically forced to look up at him. It had been so overpowering that continuing to speak was near impossible. Gathering resolve, Rin's hands curled up into small fists. Not because she was about to get aggressive. It simply solidified her resolve enough to be able to speak.
"N-Nick-san, yo-you're scaring me.." Rin tried to stutter as he had begun speaking. Overpowering her voice relatively easily, the first problem was presented from his point of view. A point of view that Rin fully understood. When it came to all the qualities needed to be a hero, perhaps barring empathy and compassion, Nick was utterly and completely out of her league. Combat ability, mobility, rescue capabilities. There wasn't anything that the girl could even remotely compete with. Even so, their classmates had chosen to vote for her. No, a vast majority had decided to vote for her, while Nick had received practically no confidence from the class. "I-I W-wish that I knew, b-but I don't know why... I d-don't think I'm f-fit for the r-role.." The honest truth. If Rin had been the one deciding the class representatives, the girl's own nomination would've been incredibly far down the list. Even below Nick, despite how she felt his aggression could cause discord in the classroom if left unattended. One answer to the question had made itself apparent though. Even if Nick had voted for Rin, he had done so out of pity. Perhaps the rest of the class had voted for her, not for ability, but because they figured no one else would...
The boy declared how those things truly weren't mattering much to him at all. Rin's eyes weren't even widening. It was something that had been spoken about in the class. The answer that she had given consistently was I made a mistake tackling one of the cutouts and got a nasty deep paper cut. It really hurt... For most in the class, that answer had been acceptable enough. Not a soul, until now, had bothered to ask the question twice. Yet, here Nick was, essentially telling her to her face that he wasn't buying her explanation. What on earth was the girl meant to tell him?... The truth would only make matters worse. Letting him know that she had been lying, deceptive. On top of that, this boy, a borderline bully, could cause so much trouble with the information. So instead of answering, instead of lying, Rin simply shook her head. There was a strange hint of defiance in her actions. "..Yo-you're making me really un-uncomfortable.. I'll be leaving then... since we don't have an overseer for the spar... Y-yeah, we can... get the practice some other day." It was clear, with how the girl stuttered, that she found comfort in being able to end their interaction here.
Continuing to step backwards, still facing Nick, the girl would do her very best to try and weasel out of this situation if Nick allowed for it. Heart was hammering in her chest. It was almost like coming face to face with a living nightmare.

Predictable. Weak. Cowardly. All these words and more erupted in Nick’s mind as the feeble little girl fell apart before him. He was scaring her? Please. He had not done anything remotely scary.
He narrowed his eyes as she began to back off. He knew better than to threaten her or otherwise resort to violence, however. He wanted to succeed at Yuuei, not get kicked out barely a month in.
Instead, he let out a long, tired sigh and folded his arms while giving her a look of utter dismissive indifference. “Very well. Do as you will, as pointless as it may be. You’ll have to face me sooner or later, you understand. Even if you prefer it to be later, it won’t change a thing. Your rampant stuttering and clear reluctance to answer me just make it even more obvious you’re hiding something. Like it or not, I’m going to find out.” Even more so now. “And if I don’t…”
Was he low enough to go there, when he was hiding something himself? Well, to him, it was not a matter of being low and his own secret was irrelevant in that moment.
“Perhaps Yuuei’s board might.”
He would absolutely go there. His expression remained the same, but the threat was clear.

WORD COUNT: TAGGED: TAGGED: Fluffy A sigh of relief left the girl's lips as it became evident that Nick valued his position here at Yuuei far greater than settling a dispute between the two of them. Of course he was more sensible than a dumb brute, Rin should've known as much. The whole spiel about facing him sooner or later was a fallacy on his part. There was absolutely nothing which enforced that an encounter between them would be inevitable. Even if it were, with hundreds hours of practice ahead of them, perhaps the outcome in the future would be less of a landslide victory in Nick's favor. It gave the girl comfort knowing that it was a hurdle that, at worst, she would have to contend with some time in the distant future.
Or at least, so Rin had initially thought. With his threat evolving, with Nick managing to properly use his head, he bought himself a bargaining chip. Rin froze in her steps, tension rapidly building within her body. Nick had misunderstood the situation completely. Of course Rin wasn't crazy enough to have lied in her application to the academy. The principal, the teachers, the staff. They all knew exactly what the girl's quirk was. The problem was rooted elsewhere. To be a heroine, it was exceedingly clear that the girl needed to practice her quirk; The teachers had been making as much clear. It was something that Rin had kept putting off, knowing that practicing meant pain, discomfort, even risk at getting seriously hurt...
Now Nick was threatening to go speak to them. The board would be aware that she had avoided practicing her quirk at all. To them, it would likely look like the girl was not even attempting to improve her skillset. Lazy, unfit, unwilling. The label that they'd put on the situation hardly mattered. The result was the same. At best, it would put the girl in an exceedingly negative light. At worst, the girl would be removed from the education without second thought. Even if the risk of such extreme measures being taken seemed unlikely at this point, it was a risk that Rin simply couldn't take. Nick was effectively threatening her dream for the future. It was incredibly effective...
Turning around to face him, the atmosphere around Rin had changed ever so slightly. Becoming cold, sharp. At this point, since he was threatening something dear to her, the stuttering and insecurity had vanished like dew under a bright sun. "So you're this underhanded in your actions, huh?... Fine, I'll fight you... Just don't get me kicked out of Yuuei." Rin said in a quiet, melancholic tone. It was clear that she felt completely defeated. Searching through her backpack, the girl withdrew a darkblue pencil-case.. Inside, was a sharpened letter opener. Enough to easily pierce skin...
In a swift motion, the girl cut across her own wrist, wincing in pain, gritting her teeth and groaning softly. The blood dripped from her wrist into her own palm, where it began gathering rapidly. The process was clearly incredibly unpleasant, painful. Rin's eyes were tearing up. This action of self-harm went completely against her survival instinct. The girl's body was screaming at her to stop the pain. Breathing softly, Rin rose her gaze to Nick. Despite her clear pain, the fire to be a hero was burning brighter than the fear or pain. So far, to him, the actions that the girl had taken may have made no sense. There was nothing indicating that this was normal behavior for her. "...Ready when you are."

To say Nick was surprised when she cut her own wrist was an understatement. For once he gave Rin the satisfaction if she so took it of seeing him stunned. His eyes widened, his eyebrows lifted and his smirk faded into a grimace. No sooner had this happened, though, he forced his usual smug indifference back.
Of course. The blood from the rescue exercise. It all made sense now: her true Quirk must have involved using her own blood in some way. The ‘stamina boost’ she had told him of before was merely a side-effect of it, the same as his own enhanced stamina was. There were a myriad of possibilities: could she shoot her own blood as concentrated blasts, transform it into weapons or even manipulate his own blood, just to name a few. Perhaps all three, though he doubted she was at that level.
He had to play this smart. He recalled the rescue exercise, how he had overdone it with his Quirk and forgotten he was limited with how long he could use it. He doubted she had forgotten the state he had been in after using his Quirk in their baseball exercise.
Please, consider your quirk and how you must conserve energy.
The words of his teacher echoed in his mind. So, he assumed a fighter’s stance – and did not transform. He could take one hit, he figured. Perhaps it was not that smart, but in their sparse area he did not have many options. She would be expecting him to charge her head on. Instead, he just stood there. She could move first.

WORD COUNT: TAGGED: TAGGED: Fluffy Rin remained completely calm in place. The blood continued to slowly drip off of her wounded wrist into the girl's open palm. From her fingertips, it began dripping into the grass below. The sapphire blue eyes were watching Nick with mild disinterest. Rin knew that approaching him would immediately give him the upper hand. In close quarters combat, the hulking monstrocity held all the cards. Even if they started at range, the moment he got used to what her quirk was capable of, it'd again leave her at a disadvantage. The first shot that Rin would launch could decide everything. It needed to be a good one. Fortunately for her, it had been his desire to pressure the female into a fight. Fortunately for her, there were several personality traits that she could probably abuse to her own advantage. Covering her mouth with her left hand, it was clear that the raven-haired youth was suppressing a yawn. "..After all that bravado, is standing there moping all you're capable of?.. Perhaps you got cold feet?... Or are you just scared of me, coward?" Riling him up was the only option that Rin had left. Trying to punch at the buttons that she knew had gotten him going in the past.
"I think you should quit this fight. It's clear to me that you have no chance to win." Rin knew that almost every word she spoke was a complete and utter lie. Winning fights for the young female, was all about getting into her opponents head. When it came to actual combat abilities, Rin was certain that almost any student at Yuuei could take her down without much effort. However, when it came to being creative with ones power, when it came to using her head to win a fight, Rin almost always had a chance. The blood kept overflowing from her palm, dripping into the grass below. The girl still couldn't reveal her quirk to him. The reveal had to count..!
Taking a few steps back, Rin's whole expression was stating exactly how much she was losing interest in Nick. As if he was insignificant. If Nick wasn't going to move, Rin had made it very clear that she viewed him as a coward. If nothing else, it would be a moral victory in her favor. Exactly how was Nick going to respond to being pressured, not by combat ability, but by words?

Nick was disappointed, truly. He meant it when he said he wanted to see her real power. Perhaps she would actually change his mind about her if she showed him what she could really do – he was not adverse to it, despite his posturing.
Instead she chose to stand there and goad him. Her words might have actually angered him if it were not so painfully obvious what she was trying to do. He was reminded of those ‘bait’ memes from the old days of the Internet.
He did not drop his stance, keeping his eyes on the blood dripping from her wound, but he tilted his head to the side and smirked. “Cute. But I’m afraid I’m not as simple as you seem to have decided I am. Your obvious attempt to rile me into attacking you first isn’t going to work.” He let out a mock-sigh. “What’re you going to do? You’re obviously too afraid to fight me, so the only other option I see for you is it to walk away. Which means I’m going to have to tell Yuuei’s board you’re not cut out for the tasks they set, only willing to do the bare minimum required to shamble through them. Perhaps you’re not cut out to be a hero at all. Especially given you would have failed the rescue course.”
He did not understand her. She disliked him as much as he disliked her, and here he was giving her a golden opportunity to hit him and she was refusing to take it.

WORD COUNT: TAGGED: TAGGED: Fluffy Shaking her head from side to side, the girl was clearly not as invested into these kind of goating as she had first seemed. Obviously, Nick wasn't aware of what was going on underneath the surface, so perhaps she couldn't blame him all too much. Twiddling some of her darkened locks through her hair, the girl eventually stretched her left hand over to run across the wound in her wrist. The blood hardened immediately, creating a makeshift bandage. It wasn't going to heal any faster than normally, but at least it wouldn't bleed or be overly annoying. "I'm afraid that's not going to work, Nick." Rin spoke quietly, the girl breathing softly. The source of the pain was coming to an end, so the girl's emotions were slowly coming back under control. "The board at Yuuei already know my real quirk. I wasn't worried that you'd tell them I had lied to you about my quirk. I was worried for other reasons... Reasons that have been remedied."
Opening her palm, the remaining blood from the girl's palm dripped into the grass. Tilting her head slightly to the side, Rin sighed softly. "..I guess in classes I will have to face you eventually, Nick. When that time comes, I'll be better prepared." Rin turned around on her heel, turning her back towards Nick, as she began marching away. The girl was relatively certain that Nick wasn't crazy enough to attack someone in the back. Despite how this conversation and encounter had been largely unsuccessful, Rin had learned a fair bit extra about who Nick was and how he reacted. The future would reveal whether they two of them would be facing off. Hopefully later rather than sooner. Nick was quite adept at making Rin feel a little uneasy. The girl's arm was still shaking ever so slightly. No matter how many times Rin did it, hurting herself still felt absolutely horrible.

Once again, she merely stood there. He took note of the way she hardened her blood, however. So that was what her true Quirk involved, though such a little glimpse was not enough. He glanced up again at her face as she proceeded to deny him a second time. She was not going to play into it. She was smarter than she seemed, he would give her that.
And infuriating. Oh so very, very infuriating.
Nick’s lips curled in distaste. “As you wish. Walk away.”
‘You coward’ he almost added, but she was already gone. He could have chased her down and struck at her, but she would have been expecting it, he was sure. No point playing into her hands, which would just be embarrassing after she had avoided playing into his. That, and attacking her now as she was leaving carried too much risk of getting him in trouble with the teachers.
Now that she could no longer see him, he let his indifferent face darken with clear irritation and anger. If she thought this ended things, that she had managed to escape him, she had something else coming. She had not escaped at all: their classes would present other opportunities for him to find out her capabilities. He would find out. One way or another.
It suddenly hit him – was there not supposed to have been a third person here? An overseer? He had been so wrapped up in confronting Rin he had not given it much thought until then. Some use they had been, indeed. He had half a mind to wait for them and scold them for their lack of punctuality, but he doubted they were even going to show at all.
With a sigh, he walked off in the direction of the dorms. He needed to get lost in a good, thick book to forget about this mess.

Well, this was a nice little thread, if cut a bit short at the end. Because of the shortness and the fact that it never got to the fight or the training I won't go overboard with points, but I still think you two deserve a fair amount.
