Darren, usually the one who came up with all the dumb nicknames he called his classmates by, had recently received a new nickname of his own.
Bird Boy was the name the privates in the training area had given him, and in return, he taught them to call Jasmine Blondie -- both blondes were starting to be known by the privates. Darren had scheduled a spar with her too -- a quirkless spar, strategically, as the delinquent had a nagging feeling that if they fought with their quirks now, he would end up with his ass both singed and flat on the ground. If it was old fashioned brawling, he knew he stood more than a few chances, so that’s what he bet on.
However, today, he was not here to spar with Jaz. He was here to answer a challenge: a dozen or so quirkless soldiers against him and an ally of his choice. The men boasted that as fast or as dangerous their superpowers made them, they would be no match against so many professionals. Darren said he was training to be a pro too, so he took them up on the challenge. The men were surprised. It was supposed to be a jest. He told them he was about to show them how exactly could birds dunk on sharks, and he’d only need a few bees to help him. The privates were puzzled. He told them they’d see tomorrow and that they better get ready for an ass-kicking.
He only had to think about who to pick for his partner very little. He knew he needed someone with crowd control, and he only knew of one person with both the means and the guts to fight off waves of trained soldiers, and with an attitude to match the shit-talking of the privates -- and his own. He called her that evening.
“Yo Hayley, you up to fight a bunch of soldiers? It be like that time we fought our way out that bar at that Splinterfist concert, except with dudes that know how to fight. Get yourself, Gerald and the others in gear and get ready to kick ass. And sting ass.” It was amazing what Darren could remember. Mathematics theorems, physics formulas and civil education laws entered by one ear and left by the other, but the name by which he heard the beehive girl call one of her bees -- hornets, but fuck if Darren was ever gonna learn the difference -- a few months ago stuck.
Just like with Yumi, it was easy to talk to Hayley. She didn’t wriggle her pair of personalities around for everyone’s enjoyment the way the red-headed class president did, but she had one pair of things that Yumi didn’t have: a pair of fists that could do the talking for her and do it well. And that attitude. Yumi didn’t mind Darren's violent ways, but Hayley shared them.
And just like him, she had things about herself that she did not tell most people, because most people wouldn’t understand. Her quirks had her have bees -- hornets -- living inside of her body. Most people found it disgusting. Darren was just curious. A little scared, but curious.
Plus, she played guitar in their band and she helped him sick some rock n’ roll on these maid cafe fools a while back. What was not to like about that?

Hayley, being Hayley, had answered Darren’s call with an enthusiastic “hell yeah my dude, I’m always up for busting some heads; you know that! Let’s do it!”
And so here she was, waltzing into the military camp as though she owned the place. Several of her hornets buzzed around her; Gerald was actually not one, as her hornets only lived for a day and her inner hive replenished itself while she slept, but Darren did not know that. There was, however, a Gerald Mark Two, named such because it flitted around her shoulders as the original had liked to do.
As she walked she looked around with eyes that sparkled in wonderment. Good God, how had she only just now arrived at this military camp place? Real weapons, real training courses and real hardass military instructors; to a lover of extreme violence such as Hayley, it was heaven. The only thing that could have made it better to her would have been the presence of actual mechas.
And soon she would get to fight actual soldiers. Although excited and bursting with adrenaline, there were nerves in the mix as well. These were not the common thugs she was used to; these were trained professionals. After that horrible accident with the elephant, though, the opportunity to really test her Quirk the way it should be utilised was welcomed. Her smile faded away to nothingness as she remembered that awful day.
No. This was not just a fun outing. She had to concentrate, lest things go wrong in the worst way again. She just hoped Darren would not do anything too crazy either…

The next day, Darren took the bus to the military camp again and stepped off with a smile, brutalizing his left palm with his right fist to pump himself up. Of course Hayley was down; he never doubted that she was. She wasn’t a bird, but they were of a feather all the same.
He soon spied her from the way the crowd would part when they heard her bees -- hornets -- buzzing around her. People didn’t want to be anywhere in the general vicinity of hornets, and no one could fault them. Most hornets weren’t as docile as Hayley’s. Most hornets were, in fact complete assholes who’d sting you if you looked at them wrong.
Darren parted the crowd in his own way, first starting on a jog and then hopping to her side with small activations of his quirk. Scratch hopping, in fact, he was skipping like a giddy schoolgirl on her first day of middle school.
A blonde face not known for its tact suddenly popped to the left side of Hayley’s field of view. The face had its eternal grin glued to its lips, and its blue eyes eyes scanned the girl in an instant. Her riding leathers contrasted with the disturbing lack of smile or visible excitement on her own face.
“What's up, Bee Gee? You don't look too happy. You got a face like a donkey’s ass,” he said in English, trying to imitate her British idioms and mannerisms. As much as he loved to boast his English was perfect, he was born and raised in Japan, and many of the finer subtleties of the language of Shakespeare and chavs still escaped him.
“You better perk the fuck up,” he continued. “Take example on my old buddy Gerald right there. He’s always buzzing happily, see? And I bet he's itchin’ to sting some ass. As it should be, as it should be. We ain't got time for no jokes. These guys ain't the blokes at the bar, they pack a mean right straight and they don't eat mine so easy. I guess that's a pro for you.”
He was maintaining a respectful distance to Hayley and her bees as he walked besides her. He knew they weren't dangerous, he saw them in class often enough, but a primal part of his brain still screamed at him to get the fuck away whenever she released her swarm. It knew humans had no real answer to a bunch of angry eusocial insects who each packed a mean-ass stinger.
He hoped that would work on the soldiers too. “Oh, and hide yo bees when we get there. We're gonna make this a little surprise, yes?” He had a diabolical grin on his face. The poor military men never knew what they were getting themselves into when they challenged Darren.

Sure enough, there Darren was, swaggering over with his usual shit-eating grin. Hayley found some of the negativity inside her faded away at the sight as some of his enthusiasm rubbed off on her, enough for her to perk up a bit and put her thoughts of that horrible accident aside for the moment. However she felt, she could always count on Darren to say some bullshit that made her crack a smirk.
“Yo!” she greeted. She held up a finger and the hornet Darren called Gerald settled on it. “This is actually Gerald Mark Two. They only live for a day, see. But he’s just as eager to fight some assholes as the original Gerald was.”
She had grown better with her Quirk since the time they fought alongside each other back at that seedy bar. She was capable now of releasing not only one swarm but two. She thought about telling Darren, but then again would the look on his face when she sent out another swarm not be hilarious? She realised it would be better to savour that moment.
She followed Darren through the camp, taking no notice of how he kept his distance from her. She was quite distracted by her surroundings. Was there an armoury here? She made a mental note to find it later.
“Alright, I hear you,” she said with a nod. She sent out the silent signal to the hornets that were flitting around her, which at once flew back into the holes on her gloves and the hands beneath, thus leaving her appearing completely ordinary. “Can’t wait to see how they shit themselves.” While she said this, on the inside nerves still stirred.

“Noooooo, not Gerald!” he cried over-dramatically. He made a military salute with his right hand and looked wistfully at the horizon. “Godspeed, Gerald. We will always remember you. Mark Two will carry on your duties with the zeal and honor you always displayed.” He had seen Gerald exactly once in his life.
His dumb joke made, he relaxed and his hand found its way back to the pocket in which it belonged. Hayley recalled her hornets. It was always impressive to see her swarm obediently head back to the holes in her hands without a word. Really drove the point homes that she was just not a beehive; he recalled her words that the bees, or hornets, were a part of her just as much as she was a part of them.
On the way to the training area, he noticed the bee girl was looking around curiously, so he felt obligated to provide commentary, although she never asked. No one ever asked.
“They have an armory over there… You see Elise from general studies? The redhead? She’s a god damn gun bunny trained by the god damn principal, the things you learn here, I swear. They got a rescue thing out there with helos n’ shit. I went skydiving without a parachute with Yumi here. Well, we had parachutes, but we ain’t use them. I almost drowned, so they took me to the medic area over there afterwards.” As usual, the delinquent spoke of almost dying in the same tone he spoke about everything else.
“Anyway, here we are.” The training area was everything that you’d expect of it; it had MMA cages, boxing rings, some of which were just squares drawn in chalk on the ground, obstacle runs, a collection of olive drab tents and training equipments, and of course, privates walking around in camo pants and shirts.
The pair headed for a bunch of them which were grouped together in one of the larger sand arenas. Darren greeted them loudly and they greeted him back louder, with the strength of numbers at their back. They noticed the girl and the salacious jokes immediately flew in their direction. “Yo, kid, you brought your girlfriend?” “You take us so lightly as to think you don’t need a partner, kid? “Trying to impress the girlie in hopes of a good one tonight, eh?”
They flew over Darren’s head who answered with a smirk. “No, fools, she’s my partner. Now if you ladies are done gossipping, can we start fighting?” The privates hollered and whistled and went “Oh oh oh” at his provocation, and they cracked their knuckles and spread out around the duo of bar fighters. There were a dozen of them and each gave off an air of menace that managed to tie even Darren’s stomach a little, even from ten meters or so away. The majority were taller than him, too.
Nonetheless, the delinquent mustered his bravado and snapped his fingers. “Alright, let’s get started! Hayley, if you please,” he asked in a mockingly polite tone. He knew what was coming next. The men did not. The men took a step forward. Darren doubted they would take a second one.

Hayley laughed quite hard at Darren’s silly mock send-off for the original Gerald. Was it a morbid thing to laugh at? Possibly, but it was not like she was not adjusted to her hornets’ lifespans, and the original Gerald had had a good life.
At last they reached their destination, where a group of hardass military men awaited. A quick scan was enough to tell Hayley that, yes, these were far more than the motley thugs she was used to – even if they bantered with Darren like motley thugs. She tried not to blush at the ‘girlfriend’ comment: emphasis on tried. It was not like that, she wanted to cry out, even if they did spend a hell of a lot of time together and shared all the same chaotic interests…
Fortunately, Darren came to her rescue and denied this. Or was it unfortunately? She did not know why she felt conflicted and somewhat disappointed on the inside.
She abruptly snapped out of it as Darren called for her to get started in a mock polite tone.
“Uh, uh, yeah!” she said.
She quickly assumed a battle ready stance in a desperate attempt to salvage herself. Darren seemed to trust her ability to get them started here. Well, who was she to let him down? As the military men advanced, she thrust her hands out in opposite directions, aiming to reach as many of the surrounding men as possible.
One hornet queen emerged from each hand followed by the rest of their swarms. The military men’s mouths dropped open as they froze in place – which was all the opening Hayley needed. She sent one swarm towards the men nearest to herself, then commanded the other to do the same for the men nearest to Darren, though there was a delay here as she delivered the separate command. The hornets descended upon the military in a mad stinging frenzy like some kind of Biblical plague.

“Hayley?” he called again when he saw the men take a second step. It must have been enough to snap her out of whatever state of haze she had gotten into -- she seemed to lose herself in her thoughts a lot around him for some reason -- and he soon hear the infernal buzz of the girl’s dreadful quirk. “There we go,” he added, and he felt the hairs on the back of his neck stand reflexively. Beekeepers had to wear an integral suit for a reason: men had no counterplay options against a swarm of bees, and hornets were really just bees on a strict regimen of steroids and pain. Stingers pierced their delicate skin with ease and left painful marks for days, and punching back was about as useful as a condom on the pope’s nightstand. Darren gulped and thanked the lord below that Hayley was on his side as the swarms spread around them. Most of the men knew better than to take a third step, but one of the quicker-witted military men, braver than the others, or perhaps more foolish, found an opening in the delay between her commands and managed to duck under the insects and towards the pair of apprentice heroes. Unfortunately for him, he found himself facing the other half of this crack team: Darren. And he had just finished cracking his knuckles too. He smiled a demonic grin as he cracked his neck and the ocean blue sparks of kinetic energy cracked on his skin. “We said quirks allowed, right?” Joining deed with gesture, he blasted forward knee first, flying through the air like a bird boy. The private, however, displayed his quick wits once again and managed to slip the attack so that Darren only scored a glancing blow, and he managed to grab Darren by the collar. He felt strangulated for a second before he cancelled his forward momentum in another shower of kinetic sparks. The sudden change in resistance threw the private off for a second, a second which Darren exploited to reach for his wrist and turn the situation around, and quite literally so. Just like he showed Kutsu a few days ago in the martial arts club, he thrust his hips on the private’s crotch and hooked his right arm under the private’s own. It was very gay for a second, then the blondie executed a beautiful ippon seoi nage -- one-armed shoulder throw in layman’s terms -- and let go early to send the poor man flying towards the hornets. It was suddenly a lot less gay and a lot more cruel. Mercy was not in Darren’s vocabulary and neither was delicacy. His shoulder throw executed, he took a second to admire his work and swiveled his head around to glance at Hayley, see if anyone broke through the hornet barrier. He’d have trusted the energetic beehive bitch in a fist fight -- ‘bitch’ in the ‘strong, confident and absolutely fucking terrifying please don’t kill me’ sense -- but if a soldier did break through her bees, he figured a clutch flying kick would be welcomed.

Hayley was more relieved than she would admit to see Operation Surprise Hornets, Assholes off to a successful start. She was pleased, too, to see Darren get right in there as only Darren could and hold his own against men much older and better-trained than she had seen him fight before.
The delays between her commands were evident, however, and were more than enough to allow some of their opponents to slip through. While some of them went for Darren, a few went for her and she cursed.
She leapt towards the first man to reach her with a kick aimed at the most sensitive area of all. Hardass military veteran or not, no man could withstand such a thing. Sure enough, he fell back with a satisfying grunt of pain.
Speaking of pain, the world suddenly shuddered as she was sent stumbling by a blow to her side it was a miracle she did not fall over from. She grit her teeth. They were not holding back because she was a fourteen-year-old girl, it seemed; not that she would have it any other way. Ordering one swarm to keep stinging the men further out, she then called her other over to her. It formed a barrier between her and her attackers. As her attackers tried to move in, the barrier descended upon them and had them flailing back.
The fact she had called one swarm over meant more of the men further out were able to move in, though, and she spotted them charging at Darren.

Darren was relieved to see Hayley still kicking and kicking dirty, too. He couldn’t help but wince a little himself when he witnessed the kick. However, the limits of her quirk were starting to show; the barriers of hornets were slow in responding to probing steps and feints. Others managed to sneak in without getting stung too much. She was able to push them back but she had taken a blow herself. The blonde delinquent felt an urge to jump over there himself for a flying kick. He restrained himself. I can’t explain, the song in his head said, and he really couldn’t explain his urge to jump over there. Hayley could take care of herself, and besides, he had other things on his plate right now. One man was doable. One professional soldier, Darren could take in hand to hand combat if he used his quirk. However, due to Hayley focusing on her defense, the barrier of hornets she maintained around him weakened and three soldiers got past it, charging him while a fifth helped the first one up. There was no time to worry about Hayley. Darren put up his guard and sprang up on his legs, just in time to dodge a left with a short crackle of kinetic energy. Right on the heels of this attack, he shot his right knee up to block a low kick, and he felt a strong blowback. The third soldier threw an uppercut that he barely slipped by. He finally had an opening. After slipping left of the right upper, he threw his knee to the private’s exposed liver with a burst of Autokinesis. With quick steps and more uses of his quirk, he managed to dodge a kick from the second private and pushed himself down and around, spinning like a top and sweeping his other leg. The deep blue sparks danced everywhere, bouncing off Darren’s skin and unto the privates’ frustratingly and harmlessly. The sparks' dance and Darren’s movements were beautiful and quick indeed, but the third private had time to observe them and managed to catch the blonde on the recovery with a well-timed side kick. Darren grunted and stepped back. He couldn’t take too much of the soldiers’ hits, despite his impressive durability. Each soldier packed a fearsome punch. Thankfully, he had his stamina and sharp instincts. He knew without thinking about it that he had been pushed back into a dangerous area. He knew there were two other privates behind the living black and yellow wall he could hear buzzing in his back, close, very close, too close. He decided to trust Hayley to take care of the two men behind the wall. He had to focus on the man in front of him, and the other two behind this one who were getting back up. Sparks lit up his skin. The best defense was offense. He stepped in as well for a long right straight, his strongest punch, with his quirk at a hundred percent power. The private had a head start. Their fists crossed each other at the same time, both headed straight for the opponent's chin. Darren was a fraction of a second faster. His punch landed first as a counter, and he only ate residual force from his opponent's. He managed to kill the punch and down his opponent with a precise counter, just the way the coach had shown him. However, the delinquent of class 1-C was now unbalanced and surrounded by enemies on every side. He realized this and grinned. Things were getting interesting. The adrenaline was flowing nicely, flooding his neuroreceptors, whom in turn flooded his brain deep down with a deluge of dopamine. He lived for these moments of pure ecstasy, each slipped blow triggering a dose of adrenaline, each landed punch blowing back in his shoulders, each instant feeling more alive than the last.

Hayley watched Darren from the corner of her eye. Someone was definitely enjoying himself. It was infectious, the clear enthusiasm he displayed for kicking ass and the skill he demonstrated in doing so even against trained veterans.
Hayley felt her own adrenaline skyrocketing higher than it had already been. Her own grin widened on her face. Her defensive wall had succeeded in driving back the men that had challenged it, who were now thoroughly stung red raw and stumbling around in drunken dazes.
She sensed movement behind her and spun, directing her defensive swarm with one arm as she did so to rush over her and meet the two remaining men. She was just in time, too, as the two men had almost been upon her. The swarm stabbed and jabbed until the men were brought to their knees.
“How do you like that?” she declared, pumping a fist. This is fun, she added in her mind. It had been so long since she had gotten to let loose. She was practically swimming in her own dopamine.
But then, the mental image of a crushed tent struck her mind like a knife blow.
The wave of nausea that hit her almost brought her down. She was left standing there motionless for a good moment or two.
No. This was not supposed to be fun. People got killed in real combat scenarios if the people in them treated it like a game.
She had to end this quick. She sent all of her hornets towards the men surrounding Darren, again a delay between the two swarms. She ordered them to descend upon the men with everything they had. Their buzzing grew to a furious roar as they obeyed and hurtled down with their piercing stingers like a horde of arrows.

The other privates were up quickly. Darren didn’t have any time to peep at Hayley now, much as he wanted. He just hoped she would be okay, and he didn’t have time to wonder why he hoped for that.
A punch came from left side, a kick from his right and a leg grab from above, in what order he couldn’t tell anymore. There was too much to react to at once. With three people on his case, Darren was finally overwhelmed. He backstepped, leaving a sparkling blue trail, but the blows hit him. He couldn’t charge his quirk on time. He only managed to avoid the right and absorb some of the hits’ power. He was taking damage.
Already a few bruises were starting to show on Darren’s arms, and more under his shirt. He took a moment to catch his breath and that’s when the quickest of the three soldiers managed to catch him between breaths, feinting right and diving left and getting in his face before he knew it. This time he didn’t have time to activate his quirk and he ate a right straight straight on the chin. The hit made him stagger backwards, almost fall, but he managed to catch himself back on the ground.
That’s when he heard the swarm of hornets on his left, and then the other one on his right a second later. The one who made him eat a straight was promptly punished by the fury of Hayley’s horrifying hornets. The others were in no better shape. The blonde delinquent got up slowly to admire the carnage and massage his head. That was one hell of a straight. he bled a little on the corner of his mouth.
Wait. He saw two swarms go out. As far as he knew, Hayley had only one swarm; the second was a complete surprise. He turned around, the sparks of his quirk already crackling as he did, an alarmed look on his face. He saw exactly what he expected. A private realized that Hayley was defenseless now and was aiming a nasty kick at the doubled-over girl.
More importantly, Darren had to be protected by Hayley earlier, and that was a slight on his pride that he felt he had to repay with a kick in that private’s face right now, so he did so, releasing his quirk like a slingshot, himself the stone, flying over the sand arena right foot and extended right leg first.
He felt the blowback in his ankle, in his knee, in his hip too. He almost used the full power of his quirk, and his heel landed square on the man’s jaw. The blonde delinquent couldn’t help but below a war cry as he jumped over his friend.
“MOTHERFUCK!” was the word that came on his lips. The private was propelled away by the impact of his blow, stumbled a few feet backwards and fell on his ass before he fell on his back as Darren landed next to Hayley. Most of the others were either stung, in the process of being stung or too disheartened to attempt a real attack anymore. The fight was over. The blondie relaxed with a sight and immediately turned to Hayley.
“Hey, you okay Bee Gee?” He offered an uncharacteristic helping hand.

Hayley had had no idea she had been moments away from being kicked into the next dimension until a Darren-shaped missile had gone speeding straight by her.
Ouchie, she thought as she watched his target go stumbling back from the savage blow to his jaw, which she would not be surprised had been broken. Sucks to be that guy.
When Darren turned to her and asked if she was alright, however, her mind blanked. Her cheeks turned redder than the surface of Mars and she frantically avoided eye contact.
“Yeah, I’m good!” she cried, even as she took the hand he offered her to steady herself. “D-don’t worry about me! I could’ve taken that guy, y’know, but hey I know you gotta have your moment too!”
Her distraction meant both of her swarms had withdrawn from their stinging frenzy and were flitting about in aimless clusters above the arena. Most of the soldiers they had been stinging were not even attempting to get back up, their skin covered in noticeable welts.
Mega ouchie.
Some of the soldiers managed to get back onto their feet, however, for which Hayley was certain they deserved some kind of Biggest Brass Balls award. Determined to dispel how flustered she felt and regain what dignity she could, she took control of one swarm and sent them towards these soldiers again, followed by the other a beat later.
“This is it!” Hayley roared with more fire than Mount Vesuvius. “We’ve freakin’ won this! You jarhead losers ain’t shit!”

The bird and the bees. The combination had worked exactly like Darren expected it to. No one could get close to them, and the few who could would have to contend with Darren, and with his quirk he could cover his partner from anywhere.
He had to admit, it was a dirty move. He knew the soldiers were gonna be wearing t-shirts and tank tops and only have their bodies to fight, which is exactly the type of enemy against which Hayley’s hornets shone. As with every single one of his classmate’s quirks, he had given it some thought as to how it might be used in a battle: Hayley would be useless against anyone wielding fire or any sort of thick armor, but she had the best crowd control quirk in the entire class, hands down. His theory that their quirks went together well had been proved today, as the painful marks on the soldiers’ arms attested. He was glad she was on their side.
But when Darren grabbed Hayley’s hand to lift her up, he stopped thinking about this. For some reason, it caused her to go all red and flustered and babbling and… It was cute.
Cute? Since when do I think things are cute? he thought to himself, staring at her for a few seconds while she sent her bees -- hornets -- after the privates, who ran away screaming about how he was a son of a bitch and he didn’t warn them he was gonna bring a crazy bee bitch out there. He felt a strange tingling in his cheeks.
He wasn’t hearing them. He was busy telling himself that she looked badass, not cute. Even better, said a voice in his head. He told it to shut up.
He shook his head. What the fuck am I on about? he wondered, snapping back to reality. The privates were still running from the terrible Hayley and her hornets -- Hayley and the Hornets, not that was cool band name if she ever wanted to strike out on her own, he thought, and then he wondered why he hated the idea of her leaving the band so much.
He snapped out of his thought again. God damn it, what the fuck is happening to me? he wondered angrily. “Hey, Hayley, cool it, they had enough,” he said. “Let’s get out of here. Ehm... What should we do next?” He hated the fact his voice was less confident than usual, right after he’d just won a fight. It’s ‘we won a fight', boyo, said the voice in his head.
Shut the fuck up, answered Darren again.

Hayley hopped from foot to foot and waved her arms around like a complete madwoman as she continued to yell insults and challenges at the fleeing ‘jarhead losers’, more hyped up than if she had drank a barrel of caffeine. She had somewhat lost track of what she was even yelling anymore, but she knew it was insulting and that was what mattered.
She only halted her frenzy when she heard Darren tell her to chill, for the soldiers had clearly had enough. Reluctantly she quietened down and tried not to roll her eyes in disappointment at the fight being over so soon. “Yeah, yeah okay. I hear you.”
She called her swarm back over to her and held out her hands for it to return into her body. Once this was done, she faced Darren and lightly shrugged. “I dunno. You wanna hit up the shooting range or something? Or maybe see if we can go parachuting?” She gave a sudden big yawn, which left her blinking in surprise. “Whoa shit, where did that come from? I guess stinging ass tires you out more than you’d realise. Maybe I should just head home and get some rest, I dunno.”

The delinquent couldn’t help but laugh at the shit his friend was yelling at the soldiers, but the reason he told her to stop was that he noticed the hateful looks he got from a few privates in the corner of his eye. “Let’s get out of here,” he told her, and a protective instinct had him put his hand on her shoulder as he led her away, darting threatening looks at the soldiers in question.
Hayley suggested very fine activities, that Darren couldn’t help but comment on excitedly. “Oh, I’ve done both, but I don’t mind doing it again at all. It’s awesome. They got all sorts of guns at the armory, they got them fire blast shells, also they show us the cannons sometime. I went there with Yumi the other day, they shot a rail gun. Also we did skydiving without a parachute. Wanna try?” he added with a grin, knowing the questions it would rise.
But Hayley yawned, quite loudly. It threw Darren a little off-guard. “Maybe no skydiving without a parachute then. You sure you wanna go home now? Day’s barely started. Just take a nap or eat something. I bet it’s like me when I used my quirk too much the other day, you just gotta eat something. They got a ration stand somewhere with them ramen in an aluminum can. It’s surprisingly good.”
For some reason, he noticed, he didn’t want Hayley to leave the military grounds just yet. Maybe the adrenaline from the fight pumping in its veins fucked up his brain chemistry, maybe he just liked a friend he could fight and shoot the shit with, but he realized he liked spending time with Hayley.
It wasn’t like with Yumi. Hayley was more like him, more of a ball of nerves while Yumi was too round around the edges, mentally speaking that is. She tried a little too hard to be nice with everyone, which rubbed the delinquent the wrong way. he could tolerate it with the redhead, but again, Hayley was different. She could take shit and talk shit back with the best of them.
He remembered their first meeting in a bar, where they fought their way out after meeting the band backstage. It was crazy and a lot of fun, and now, she was in his class. Thinking of this, Darren realized he had no idea how Hayley even joined.
“Hey, Hayley. I never asked. How did you end up in our school? First time I saw you, you could clearly fight. Why didn’t you join the school earlier?” He scratched his head, remembering something -- his memory could be half-decent at times. “Wait, actually, you said you ain’t need hero school or something. I guess my question really is, what makes you wanna do this? The whole hero thing, I mean. Fighting villains and the like.”
For once, the delinquent spoke in a softer voice, with a noticeable point of curiosity. It wasn’t often that he was interested in what someone else thought, so it wasn’t a voice he let the world hear very often.
