HISTORY They once told stories up in the mountains of a 'monster' loose in Japan's rural villages. These stories claimed this monster appeared as a buzzing cloud and feasted upon human flesh. Anyone from the cities who heard these stories would probably suspect the 'monster' was actually just some violent lunatic with a Quirk, and one man who did was the vigilante Beetle Battler. Known for his rhinoceros beetle horn and shell, he was a powerful hero who made countless arrests in his time, and certainly not the type to fear being eaten. He was fortunate to arrive in the rural area just as another village was attacked by this 'buzzing cloud', and upon dashing over to save the day was greeted with the shock of his life - The 'monster' was a little girl. She was no older than four. Her clothes were not much more than strips of cloth and her filthy skin was covered in scratches. The 'buzzing cloud' was actually a swarm of hornets that manifested from within her body. Hornets that, as it turned out, rather liked the taste of human flesh. The girl was feral and could not speak or think beyond her need to eat. Despite her state, Beetle Battler took pity on her, and upon subduing her decided to take her in and see if he could stop her hornets' hunger and raise her to be a civilised human being. He found that giving her a proper meal was enough to stop her hornets from trying to eat human flesh. Beetle Battler, true identity an American immigrant by the name of Marcus Reid, thus raised the girl as his daughter as best he could by himself while continuing to be a vigilante-hero on the side. Hayley Reid grew up admiring her father's heroic exploits and dreaming of becoming like him. She remembered little of her life as a feral 'monster', but was confused at the great hunger her Quirk brought and the horrifying urges that hunger gave her. Beetle Battler reassured his daughter that as long as she had heroic spirit she had nothing to worry about: she would tame her Quirk and become a hero like him for sure. Unfortunately, the path of a hero is no easy one, something Hayley learned better than anything the day Beetle Battler was killed in a scrap with some Quirk-bearing Yakuza. She was only ten years old. She did not initally apply for UA, believing she didn't need any new-fangled 'hero program' or license to be a great hero, as her father didn't. Her brief stint as a vigilante brought her only pain, however, when her attempt to stop a rampaging elephant at Herr Kunshu's Circus caused the death of an innocent. Struck with guilt and grief, Hayley applied to UA very late, but thanks to her father's reputation and her own drive was accepted after all. Absolved of her vigilante law-breaking, she now enters UA for a fresh start. Will she learn to be a true hero 'the proper way'? Only time will tell... |
