“Aaaaah…!~ Don’t think I’ve let myself pig out that much since I had my growth spurts…!~”
Wearing a shit eating grin despite her still present signs of healing injury, Mia worked her way inside the house with the hustle and bustle outside. That woman who looked like Godzilla started getting crowded by Hacchi a bit once she realized she was this big movie star she recognized, which Mia herself was definitely surprised by. It wasn’t like she watched Japanese shows in America but even then, to have someone with such a clear mutation hold a bit of stardom outside of hero work? Heck, even Serperior surprised her sometimes that he managed to be an actor with his clear physical differences. Did they have to write a snake half into scripts for him or were they all made with him in mind?
Ah, whatever, her food sogged brain was getting distracted. Point was she needed a bit of time alone without shooing away the guests, and after a quiet comment to Jack to ask he let the others know she and Jaz need some time away from the noise, portraying it as the two just needing to rest with their time to rest given the recent injuries. A half lie, she could use some time off her feet afterall, but she really just wanted to spend some time alone with her gal.
“Remind me to put some ramps in this place next time I do an upgrade…!” She shifted the seat, careful not to knock Jaz out of it while managing to shift her up a step or two into the house and the living space beyond that, easing the wheelchair over to a nice recliner, helping Jaz if she wanted to shift into it rather than the wheelchair. “Something tells me this won’t be the last time one of us comes here in a wheelchair.~” She gave herself a hearty little chuckle, a relaxed sigh flowing out of her as she fell back into a nearby couch herself.
Digging into the fabric of her sling, she pulled out the framed art that had been resting in there. Sure the edges poked her injured arm but she didn’t wanna stick it under her sweaty armpit to carry it… even a brief moment glancing at it brought a warm smile to her face, glancing around the room and dipping her head to the mantelpiece over the wooden fire. “Watcha think? Up there, middle o’ the room? Or should I put it in the hall so no one can miss it on the way in?~”

A soft sigh left Jasmine's lips as Mia wheeled her inside her cabin, the girl offering the Oni a small smile with the meaning of a silent thank you behind it. While it might have been only a half truth for Mia, in Jasmine's case it was about three fourths of the truth. She mentally reminded herself never to doubt Nimue's word or argue with her ever again. Given the state she was in it was already a miracle she was even able to attend the festivities, let alone try to get out of her wheelchair when nobody was looking. With all of the social interaction to boot the black-gold haired teen quickly found herself being drained of whatever energy she still had, exhaustion quickly setting in to the point that she practically yearned for some peace and quiet.
"Your barbecue was really good," she offered, for once in her life being completely sincere with the other woman which tended to only happen when she was running on fumes. "Been eating nothing but hospital food these past few days and I gotta say... those ribs back there? Heaven on a plate. Haven't felt this good about a meal in ages."
"I was just about to ask if you're expecting any more cripples visiting but uh, you probably have a point. With the way we handle things we're bound to repeat this at one point or another," Jasmine replied with an amused scoff, though with that amusement came a sense of bitterness stabbing into the back of her skull. While bedridden and not asleep courtesy of the medicine Nimue had been pumping her full of, Jasmine had spent her time reflecting on what had happened during the so-called 'zombie outbreak.' Trying to figure out where she messed up, what she could've done differently, things of that nature. This had become a ritual of hers that she went through each time she found herself in a fight regardless of the outcome, but never had she felt this disgusted with herself before.
While she'd be a fool to state she didn't comprise a good portion of the team's firepower, by the end of it all she'd been nothing but a burden that the vigilantes had to carry out on a proverbial stretcher, risking their own lives for her safety. The inability to do anything... the thought alone made her sick and the scars she refused to let Nimue heal were a testament to that catastrophic failure of a situation she had put herself in. Food for thought. Motivation to strive for more. A memory she'd remind herself never to reenact again. She wouldn't allow herself to become that helpless little girl ever again.
Jasmine sucked in a sudden breath sharply, cutting herself off after quickly realizing that her thought process was leading her down a dark alley she had no business being in given the company and occasion.
Refocusing on Mia, Jasmine tilted her head as she watched how carefully the Oni handled her present. It was a wonder, really, how much something Jasmine herself didn't think much of could mean so much to someone. Though she was also aware that her thoughts in regards to the present were likely far too jaded. The meaning and importance of the message sent with the gift was clear to anybody with half a brain. The fact that this was one of Jasmine's drawing that inspired it, though? Yeah, Jasmine still felt a little awkward about it all despite being sincerely happy it was received as well as it did.
Despite the ache in her ribs spurred on by the bear hug courtesy of Mia clearly wanting to argue the point.
"Not to like, uh... kill your excitement or anything, but shouldn't you put something like your full family portrait above the fireplace? Far as I remember you were on pretty great terms with them?" Jasmine said, a small smile playing on her lips as she tried relaxing into the backrest of her wheelchair. She hummed curiously, eyes looking around the large room, "Maybe on the opposite side could work? Or the hall, like you said. Depends on what other pieces you're planning to hang up on the walls, really."

“Heh, eat enough of ‘em and you’re guaranteed to grow back a few to replace the ones you broke.~” She teased with a chuckle in her throat. She didn’t consider herself a great chef or anything but in the circle of people she knew, when it came to a nice, greasy, fatty fry up or a meat filled babecue like this? The only person who could beat her out was probably her dad, and she could still tell herself that was only cause every mouthful was moistened with nostalgia. “The trick for the ribs though is making sure it’s just tough enough to feel the juices ooze out as you bite, but soft enough it isn’t a struggle getting it off the bone.~”
Her chuckles didn’t exactly cease as Jasmine commented on her talk about the ramps, nodding along readily as she could already picture the two of them being stuck here in wheelchairs, cracking cheeky remarks at one another’s injuries. Didn’t seem like something that’d be too far off for either of them. “Yeah yeah. I mean I don’t see myself putting in a ramp tomorrow or anything but, definitely could come in handy if I wanna keep spending my recovery time here. I mean heck sometimes I forget one of my arms is fucked and go to reach for something with it. That alone stings like a right bitch. Imagine trying to drag myself up steps with dead legs, heheheh!~”
Glancing back to the picture in her hands as she turned it back to herself, Mia’s smile didn’t seem to be fading at all with time, if anything everytime she read over the words on her gift it just perked her smile up all over again. Here was a great work of art by a kid she cared for a whole lot, just… stating on it a level of their connection Mia may not have been able to put in as many words herself if she’d had to have been the first one to ‘cross that line’ so to speak. She was almost annoyed with herself that this was the most emotionally affected she’d been by something in… well years really, excluding the times some dumb villain shit just made her angry as all hell. She was only brought from looking at it noticing the little intake of breath from Jaz. Girl didn’t usually wear emotions on her sleeve so even small things like that caught her attention… buuut it didn’t seem to spark any words of concern. Maybe it was just a spike of pain or something.
“I mean, I’m putting a picture of my sister up there so it’s a start.~” She responded cheekily, though as she tipped her head back, folding her arms, she did realize something. “Shit tho… I ain’t had a good family picture in forever…” Mia was far from a stranger to her family, they had loving get togethers every so often, they were just… a chaotic bunch. Pulling in for a big picture didn’t tend to come naturally. None of them really had those instincts to record their lives in photos or films, and each of their facebooks or whatever were pretty barren. “I should see about that… it’d legit be nice…” She let out loose chuckle at the idea, sitting forward again. “Maybe I should invite my new ‘sister’ along.~” She teased with a grin, not about to drop the teasing aspect of this any time soon.

Jasmine snorted with some mild amusement, eyes trailing towards Mia as she felt herself relaxing. Somehow the Pro Hero always had that effect on her. "That how you got so big? Hiding an extra two dozen ribs behind all that muscle?" She asked jokingly, a small smile seemingly permanently etched on her lips as she wondered what it was about Mia that made Jasmine feel so safe around her.
Caldera was, for better or worse, a paranoid and jittery little creature in a world far too big for her. No matter how much she struggled or tried to make a place for herself inside this big blue globe of theirs Jasmine couldn't help but always feel insignificant in the grand scheme of things. She'd growl, she'd bite, she'd claw and she'd roar, all in defiance of the system created by normalcy and, before long, stagnation. Yet it always managed to catch up to her, bring her down and threaten to crush her resolve. Waking up in the hospital a few days ago had been one such moment as consciousness showed her body hooked up to a range of machinery she couldn't name if she tried without which she wouldn't have been able to even breathe. Perfectionism was a bitch, and no one was a worse critic of her than Jasmine herself was. She'd chewed herself out more times than she wanted to think about, each inner conversation ending up turning into a dull shit show which she knew she needed but could have frankly done without.
Even now she couldn't help thinking about it. The constant reminder of her pathetic state thanks to this stupid wheelchair hadn't done her any favors. Yet something about Mia, the way she acted, the way she carried herself, spoke, smiled, laughed... the way she hugged Jasmine after she offered that sorry excuse of a birthday present and the sheer emotion on the Oni's face... it had resonated with Jasmine far more than she dared to admit.
Hell even talking about their conditions, something which would've likely made Jasmine scrunch up her nose in disgust, ended up being nothing more than fun jest-filled banter and the student was oddly okay with that.
"You're something else, you know that?" Jasmine joked with a titter, shaking her head as she brought a hand to her face.
Halfway through watching Mia ponder over where to put the newly painted picture Jasmine couldn't help feel a hard lump in her throat as Mia spoke about family. She did her best to not let the unpleasant sensation show on her face, tapping her finger away at the armrest anxiously. Before long she froze, though, as the blonde's next words hit her like a freight train. The implication -- no, that was no implication -- the suggestion making Jasmine feel all sorts of feelings she couldn't exactly put her finger on.
She chuckled a little nervously, "I, uh... I don't think that's the best of ideas. They're uh... your family, y'know? Like, your actual family. Uh... Yeah," Christ, good job you pathetic stuttering mess. What the fuck does that even mean? Jasmine berated herself, all while offering the older female a nervous smile.

“Eheheh, something like that I’m sure. Then again… I guess that doesn’t explain why my younger brother ended up such a runt by comparison but I guess he just got unlucky. Either that or he shoulda fed less of his dinner to the family pets.” She let out a light wheezing chuckle. Well, it sounded out strong but definitely started wheezing towards the end, a light pat of her chest bringing a wince in the process, but hey, couldn’t complain so long as she was still breathing at this point.~
“So I’m told.~” She replied simply to the something else comment, leaning her cheek against her knuckles, elbow propped up against an armrest as she looked across to Jaz and just… relaxed, letting whatever painkillers they’d taken before the birthday meal rest in her system and the subtler aches fade a little as they rested into place and her body got used to them, a slow breath exiting her…
‘Course, it seemed she couldn’t relax just yet. Her eyes flicked back open as the girl with her seemed to get a little nervous at the prospect of being considered family to such an extent. After calling her sister in her gift? Seemed like she was a lot more nervous about that message than it first seemed, or at the very least, wasn’t meaning it to the same extent Mia was taking it… well. Tough luck. With a light groan Mia started to force herself up from the couch, photo pulled out from where she’d tucked it into her sling, and without a word on it just yet, she placed it on the mantelpiece. She didn’t exactly have any ornaments, so it was easy enough to put it center stage. For now just propped up against the wall behind it, easing her hand away slowly so it didn’t fall, she’d get a proper stand for it when she could.
“Kid?” She began, walking back over to Jaz, knowing the sucker didn’t have the ability to run away and escape as she held a warm smile on her own moaw. Her knees buckled a little as she came down to one, her body weak and sore, but holding herself well enough. She reached over, a hand resting on that spot where Jaz’s neck flowed into her shoulder.
“Shut up.”
It was a simple enough message, clear and given firmly. But as much as it came with the usual Kearney bluntness, she let out a slow breath and pulled Jaz just a little forward, leaning over her lap and touching that slither of forehead under her horn against Jaz’s own, closing her eyes and just holding her there for a moment, gently squeezing the side of her neck.
“Look. You know me. I never ask questions, I just care about who you are now… I’ve never been fully aware if you actually have a family back in America or if you’ve just been on your own but… whatever the case…” She eased back, her hand shifting more to Jaz’s shoulder. “But look-“ She began, chuckling a little through the intimate moment. “You just fucked up. You called me your sister. Yer family, like it or not.” She gave Jaz’s shoulder the gentlest of Jabs… Mia wasn’t in full blown laughs, but it was clear she couldn’t have made it through a heartfelt moment like this without cracking a joke. She probably woulda broke down if she tried. “Stuck with me now kid…”
Unable to even leave it on that warm note, she smirked and added. “Hoo boy… wait till you meet my brother, yer stuck with him too. Eheheh…hehe…heh…~” Her laughs trailed off, looking to Jaz… making sure she hadn’t crossed a line too uncomfortable for the kid.

Oh no, Jasmine froze up as she watched Mia stand up from the couch, quickly realizing the error she had made. She should've seen this coming a mile away. The second Jasmine showed any form of weakness, her end was guaranteed. Seeing Jasmine showing any single sign of discomfort would have undoubtedly make Mia pounce on her with her own version of reassurance and frankly the younger lass swore at herself for not having enough foresight to see something this obvious coming.
Jasmine watched on, almost meekly, as Mia hung Jasmine's drawing up as the main showcase of the entire living room. Even Jasmine couldn't say it looked bad up there but there was still a certain painful pang hitting her in the back of the head, making her brows furrow in near-disgust. Her artwork brought back too many bad memories; everything prior to coming to Tokyo, everything with Rin, her own tattoos... fuck, even the arts club crashing was her own damn fault. No matter how much she tried she couldn't get that disdain out of her system. Certain things made it a little easier -- the portrait of Rowan she gave to the girl, the mini-comic she sent to Nathan for his birthday, the classes Mosa had her participate in and the resulting status updates she'd send the counselor... it was helping, but it wasn't going to end up fixing things any time soon.
Now she found herself looking up at her own work above Mia's fireplace and it... she'd never say she regretted the drawing, ever, but she'd be remiss to say she didn't feel uncomfortable seeing it up there... and unfortunately it wasn't just because it was her own goddamn drawing. It would be so much easier if that was all it was.
Yes, the prospect of family did make her a little uncomfortable. How could it not given she's lost everybody she ever considered family, many of which were, again, her own damn fault? At this point Jasmine couldn't help but see herself as some kind of shitty luck charm who hurt people she allowed to consider her close just by being close to them and if it didn't... If it didn't happen today, it'll happen tomorrow. If it ain't tomorrow it'll be the day after. Whatever, was her usual thought process and while she knew it was wrong, even if she could logically deduce that it was a stupidly loaded fucking mindset she couldn't for the life of her tell it to fuck off and process emotions like a normal fucking person.
Yes those three uses of 'fuck' might be me -- as in, Jasmine -- stealing the power of narrative from dear ol' Dauwz here. Sorry fourth wall. I'll stop punching you.
As she watched Mia approach her like a shark circling its pray she couldn't help but curse the damn wheelchair she was bound to. Yes, she did mean it when she called Mia her sister in her artwork, but... she certainly hadn't expected it to be taken so deeply. It was a massive oversight on her part, and while she didn't regret what she did it... she simply didn't think she deserved was undoubtedly about to come next.
Jasmine simply froze in her wheelchair seat as Mia crouched down, suppressing a wince as she saw the older woman's legs buckle slightly. Wide-eyed, Jasmine stared back at the Oni with shaky eyes as their foreheads met in the most intimate moment she'd ever shared with Mia. Jasmine found herself speechless, almost as though Mia's order to shut up had actually worked for a change. She said nothing. With bated breath Jasmine just listened to what Mia had to say, each syllable digging itself into her brain, making damn sure it would leave a five mile-wide imprint on her memory. Silence followed for the briefest of moments before...
She sniffled.
"N-not... a goddamn word..." Jasmine practically croaked out as she turned her head, averting eyes which threatened to burst out with tears. A sudden warmth assaulted her chest, one she couldn't describe properly using any fucking dictionary she knew the name of. "Christ..." she fussed, her voice cracking a little as she inhaled and exhaled shaky breaths, hands coming to her face, fingers quickly rubbing at her eyelids to make sure whatever tears that had escaped disappeared without a single trace.
Obviously that didn't work given she had the very minimal amount of mascara on, which ended up looking a little messy now but it wasn't anything far too plain to see.
Jasmine stole a few brief moments for herself so she could calm down. The warm tightness in her chest was still very much there but it was manageable and didn't make her want to bust out crying again. She laughed to herself meekly, a smile threatening to split her face in two quickly showing itself on her face even while she was rubbing her eyes. As minutes passed, so did Jasmine's breathing correct herself. Hands ran up her hair as she shook her head, finally finding enough strength to be able to fully compose herself despite the emotional turmoil wreaking havoc inside her.
Slightly hazed azures glanced up at the older woman, still looking glossy but otherwise vibrant. "...thanks, Mia, really," she said, finding the strength of mind to not avert her gaze. "Family isn't exactly a light subject for me given I, well, have pretty much nobody but uh... I guess that changed today. Huh, sis?"

Mia couldn’t help the chuckle that burst out of her throat as the girl before her finally broke down a bit, but beyond that she stuck to what she wanted. Reaching around with her good arm she sunk her fingers into that two tone hair and just held Jasmine close as she let the girl get emotional for a moment. No jokes, no teasing, just the two of them with a bit of a smile and a bit of emotion in ‘em for a change. It was good to have a genuine second once in a while, even if both of them were probably embaressed by it all the same.
“Not a word.” She repeated back, hoping to deliver those words in a comforting tone, but with the gruffness of her voice it was anyone’s guess how that may have actually hit Jasmine’s ears. Without crushing her she’d give the girl a firm squeeze in her single arm. Mia couldn’t have any idea of the weight this kid had on them to struggle to accept something like this or to burst out like she did when she let herself come to terms with the fact she was stuck with Mia at this point. For all the roughness she’d been through Mia would never say she’d had a bad life. She’d been bullied at school and misunderstood as a vigilante and even a hero time and time again but… at the end of the day she had a loving family she could rely on. She had a strong will to stand on her own two feet. Jasmine may have only had one of those for a long, long time… and it may have came at the sacrifice of the other.
She gave Jasmine one more light squeeze before easing back from her, knocking her nose with the back of her fingers. “Don’t mention it kid…” She glanced to the window, hearing some commotion outside still from the people she’d invited, and pointed a thumb towards the door. “Ya know I think I’m kinda done entertainin’ for the day… shall I tell ‘em to fuck off? Set you up in the spare room? Or is jacky boy on orders to get you back to the infirmary?~” Honestly it was probably the smart move to get her back to the school and some proper care, but at the very least Mia'd offer her a chance to fix her mascara.~

look at me, i'm a reflection of what you wanna be Queen on the throne, none of you pawns can humble me
Jasmine heaved a slightly uneasy breath. Whatever she had expected the day to come down to it certainly wasn't this. The last thing she thought was going to happen was her walls crumbling to pieces to reveal exactly how vulnerable she could be... yet there she was, bound in an embrace of the large yet strangely comforting arms belonging to a person she'd grown close to over the years. She couldn't help her memory from harkening back to when she first met the Oni back in that rundown military infirmary where the one horned menace teased her to death... and proceeded to beat the everliving crap out of her, of course.
Jasmine sparred with anybody who had the balls to challenge her. Even if it might have come across as her being high and mighty it was no debate - Jasmine could quite easily stand toe-to-toe with even the Pros and some of them shied away from the third year as a result. Not Mia, though. Oh hell no. This brute of a woman was the one to suggest the spars most of the damn time and Jasmine ended up being the one hesitating with accepting... yet she always did. She always accepted and she always grew as a result.
In their seemingly eternal fights the two women bonded. Far more than Jasmine could've ever anticipated. Through her actions Mia had taken up the mantle of the number one Pro Hero and while Jasmine thought she wouldn't care at all... at that moment she found herself smiling. She was happy for the Oni for her achievements. She was frustrated when things didn't go Mia's way. Only now did Jasmine realize exactly how much she cared. She always knew she did, but this... the gravity of it all hit her like a freight train.
She was happy when Mia was happy.
She was sad when Mia was sad.
She was angry when Mia was angry.
Jasmine blinked to herself a few times. Holy shit, is this... a light scoff came from the girl as she felt the titan's arm ruffle her hair like she always did, a smile spreading across her face when she felt the subsequent comforting squeeze against her own arm. So this is what it feels like to have family, huh...
"Y'know what..." Jasmine finally said after a brief moment of silence, her head rising to regard Mia. The girl eased back into the wheelchair, what previous tension held her body before looking like it was never there in the first place. "I think... Yeah. Nimue will understand if I tell her I'm staying over. I'll call her. As for my mascara - you just had to mention it, you ass - uh... yeah. Imma need to clean up a little. Fuckin' girl products, I swear."
The black and gold haired teenager's azure hues once again glanced at the picture now hanging above Mia's fireplace, yet this time her chest didn't twist up with disgust. Instead... her smile grew.
Yeah. My family.
