feel the light shining in the dark of the night | Toma was exceedingly bored. Normally at this time of night, around midnight, he would be out prowling the streets looking for criminals and gang bangers to deal with. Now Toma wasn't able to do that. He was a busted civilian now, too scared of being watched to even act. He didn't even know what would happen to him if he got caught doing something heroic when there was no other option. Would they lock him up or let him slide? He knew that one day he would probably be put into a corner and would have to act.
That's why he was here at the park. Nothing helped him let loose some steam and get out of his head like a good run. The world could melt away for a second as the pounding pavement became the rhythm of his entire world for a brief moment. The music blaring through his headphones helped to close him off from the confusing world too.
"Damnit." He mumbled to himself as he started to pick up the pace of his jog. Sweat had yet to stain his plain white tee so the run was only just beginning when he started to get distracted.
"How the hell did I screw all of that up?" It had been a great gig. His first dream. His howl against the abyss. He was such a hypocrite. He had spouted nonsense about doing what's right and this battle of good against evil. Like he was some shiny clean paragon, instead of the selfish and narrow-minded fool he was.

running on fumes MYRIELLE DIDN'T STOP RUNNING. She hadn’t even grabbed any of her things—she’d been studying when she heard the door of the garage open—but everyone was home. No one should have been coming in through the garage. Myrielle roused herself from her desk to investigate. The house was dark. Goop slithered past her, keeping low.
They met him in the doorway to the garage—a shadowy figure, a threat—Goop roared and pushed him back out of the house, a panicked yell as the intruder lost their balance and went sprawling awkwardly down the stairs, the summon hot on their tail.
Myrielle hit the light switch.
It could have been much worse—they could have been dead. But that didn’t change the fact that Myrielle had attacked her rooommate’s (breaking-and-entering!) boyfriend.
And her roommate kept screaming and hollering about not being able to live with a monster and its keeper.
And Myrielle could feel the confused, hiccupping sobs rising in her chest—she’d always been a bit of a crybaby—the unfortunate thing was, in ugly-crying, she couldn’t really say anything in her own defense.
So instead, she ran. And she didn’t stop running.
Her legs carried her to Tokyo Park before the exhaustion caught-up with her. Her face was numb from the brisk night air, tears burning hot paths down her cheeks. Goop lumbered to a stop beside her, glimmering brightly.
“Disperse!” the Frenchwoman ordered, between gasping breaths. The creature looked taken aback—he’d only been protecting his mistress—but he did as he was commanded, devolving into a host of tiny, writhing creatures.
Myrielle lingered by the building’s side, taking a moment to catch her breath. God, she’d really messed up… really, really messed up… her parents had insisted that she’d be better-off in her own apartment, were happy to finance it, but… the blonde had been insistent.
She hadn’t noticed the two thugs sizing her up, approaching over the crest of grassy hill. It wasn’t until they were upon her, liquor heavy on their breath, that Myrielle saw them. Her body stiffened.
“Heeeyyy girly,” one of them greeted, his sour breath roiling out, “What’s a pretty thing like you doing all by yourself? It’s not good to venture around here after dark.”
“All sorts of sketchy folks about,” the second agreed.
‘Myrielle,’ Goop hissed, pressing anxiously at the bond, sensing his mistress’s panic, ‘Let me form.’
The woman sighed shakily, trying to muster a smile.
“Just… going for a run,” the blonde insisted, ignoring her summon’s plea, “I won’t be in the park for long.”
As if that was the actual issue. Myrielle roused herself from the wall, as if to move-on, and one of the interlopers pushed her back by her shoulder.
“You got any money?”
“No.”
“What do ya got?”
“Leave me alone. I have nothing.”
“If you don’t got anything, what are we supposed to d-“
“I SAID LEAVE ME ALONE! HOW HARD IS THAT TO UNDERSTAND?!” Myrielle yelled, jerking her shoulder free of their hold, “YOU SMELL LIKE BOOZE, AND I DON’T HAVE THE TIME FOR THIS! GO AWAY!”
“Hey, there’s no need to scream about it—chill out—“
They grabbed a fistful of the girl’s hoodie—which, of course, made her shriek and earnest—
“Let me go! What’s wrong with you?!”
Surely, any bystanders would have heard the tense voices from behind the cinderblock park bathroom.

feel the light shining in the dark of the night | Toma was just finishing up his run, heading back to the parking lot, when he heard a woman yelling. Any person in their right mind would know that they were in some sort of trouble. This was enough for Toma so he picked his pace back up and switched directions, heading toward the source of the disturbance.
He was sweating and panting again from running by the time he got there but the trouble was pretty obvious. Two goons were accosting and harassing some young women. The fact that these predators were clearly out here tonight just to cause trouble made Toma's blood boil.
'Hold on.' He thought to himself as he slowed to a jog about 5 meters away from them. He couldn't just quirk up right now. He didn't have a disguise, it was late enough that he would make an easy scene with too much light, and he knew the government would be watching him. 'Let's try to play this cool at first.
"KARI!" He called out the first name he could think of, some girl from an old anime, as he got within an easy earshot of the woman. "Hey, Kari! What took you so long?" He got about a meter or two away from them before he hammed up his tiredness and paused to pant with his hands resting on his thighs. "I've been waiting for over an hour! If you didn't want to have dinner you didn't have to ghost me."
"Who are these guys?" He acted out a perplexed look as he also pretended to cool down from his jog. "Friends of yours?"
