The Kaiju Cakery + Café
(Ground Floor)
(Ground Floor)
On a bustling corner of Musutafu sits the four story brick building that hosts "The Kaiju Cakery and Café". The commercial space is decorated in 1950's American revival-- with black-and-white checkerboard floors, candy-apple red cushion seats that glitter in the overhead lights with matching red Formica tables, all lined in chrome. There's an operable jukebox near the counter where customers make their orders, and pop-art all themed after traditional Japanese kaiju. An L-shaped counter is immediately opposite of two mirrored doors, and within the glass cases are a number of American and European desserts, including cakes, pies, cheesecakes, tortes, tarts, pies, cookies, pastries, and more. Teruko cycles through up to 300 desserts seasonally/monthly, or as the mood strikes her. The Musutafu location can host up to one-hundred patrons inside.
Outside, bright red neon lines a generous overhang, which covers patio seating for roughly 40 patrons. The Kaiju Cakery and Cafe is open from 10 a.m. - 11 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday.
Contrary to the vintage look of the diner down below, the building itself is relatively modern. The large, glass windows of the restaurant space give way to chic brick walls up above with tall, sash windows overlooking the street-corner. There is parking on the back of the building (public use), and an old, boarded up dance studio from which light and music periodically seep.
