feel the light shining in the dark of the night | Toma milled around the mall like a lost teenager. He had come out to do some clothes shopping after neglecting his civilian attire for so long, one of many things he had neglected in his zealotry to take down Thunder. The boy had he screwed the pooch real good this time. He didn't even know what he was looking for.
He stood staring at the full body mirror at the ghost on the other side. He was disheveled and unkempt. His hair had gone wild and there was a bad two-day beard crawling across his chin. He had to force himself to stand up straight and look anything close to human.
He begrudgingly bought a new suit and slacks since the old one had holes in it from about 5 years of wear and tear. He had to do something though, he couldn't sit moaning and groaning in his apartment any longer. He had to do something with his life since he had selfishly decided to fuck it all up.
He was on his way out of the mall when he stopped at a store packed with teenagers. A bright colorful poster caught his attention so he stopped and stared at it with a mix of disgust and apathy. "Heroes...." The poster was for a new video game, Super Hero Brawl. It had a cheap knock off versions of real Heroes as the fighting game characters. One of them made him angry. Some edgy looking guy in a black leather suit wearing an over-the-top Sentai style helmet standing in the back of the poster frame.
"That looks ridiculous...."

Niji was finally close to a breakthrough. She just needed a few game systems, a ton of copper wire, and high powered battery design to hold a ton of electrical charge. Well... she might be able to find one of those things in the mall. She strolled through it in her yellow shorts and bright yellow jeans. No sense of looking pretty today. She had work to do and she was only here for supplies. This invention would be what she would need to start her dream company. And Chereka was released from the Tokyo Police Department, free of all charges. With the warning that she would not use her quirk unless it was a last resort situation. Maybe this would keep Chereka out of trouble. Maybe.
As she made her way across the mall, something caught Niji's eye. Wait, could it be? No way. It was him! The beard would have thrown her off, but she noticed the face. He was standing in front of a mirror, apparently looking for a new outfit. For what, who knows? "Toma-sensei?" Niji said walking up next to him. She was hope she was right otherwise she would be walking upon a complete stranger and that would be super awkward for her and this person. "Is that you?"

feel the light shining in the dark of the night | Toma was about to leave when he heard a young voice call out to him. A lump formed in his throat as he turned to see Niji, one of his former students. He wasn't expecting anyone to see or recognize him out in public. He felt his heart leap up in his chest and try to jump its way out of him as a cocktail of confusing emotions and surprise gripped.
"Oh!" He cleared his throat and composed himself a little. "Hello. Miss Uta. It's a pleasant surprise to see you." It was a surprise for sure but not necessarily pleasant. Not that Niji wasn't a good kid, but he was dressed like he had spent a week on the couch and looked like he hadn't cleaned up in a few days.
"What brings you out here" He pointed at the store's poster and covered his tracks. "I was just out shopping for a game. Thought about picking this one up" He had no interest in the game but he didn't want to look like he was pining in front of Niji. Besides, he didn't care about fighting games. Toma preferred racing games and the occasional life-stealing RPG. He wasn't a fan of the stress of fast-paced games.

Toma-sensei looked like he had seen better days. Maybe it was his day off. Whatever the reason, Niji was happy to see him. On the day Nimue-sensei took over, she wondered what happened to her sun-powered teacher. She always wondered if it was because maybe they were not the best students for him. But she knew that it was her thinking silly. She felt in her heart that Toma-sensei really wanted to stay with her and Jin. But she understood that the hero life took more responsibility than a bunch of high-powered teenagers.
"I came out to gather some supplies for an invention that I am working on," Niji said with a smile. "What about you?" She listened as Toma told her about a game that he came here to buy a game. "I would never take you as a gaming type, Toma-sensei. Then again, everyone needs a way to have fun in life, right?" Niji wondered what happened to him. There has to be a reason he left them. All the reasons she thought about just felt like it was leaving a hole in understanding what really happened. "So," Niji said not sure how to approach her question. "What have you been up to?"

feel the light shining in the dark of the night | Toma froze like a deer in the headlights. What did he tell her? Did he give her a comforting lie and try to save face? He could say whatever he wanted and it's not like she wouldn't believe him. On the other hand, he had the sour truth, while bitter and ugly it was the truth nonetheless. It was a hard decision, but obvious in the end.
"Well, Niji..." He sighed and placed his thumb to his temple and two fingers to his forehead in a bad attempt to hide his face. "The truth is I got canned." Boy was that a lot to unload. He wasn't going to tell her everything, no she was still a kid and probably couldn't handle/process the level of his stupidity. "I was given administrative leave from the Hero program and the school for making some bad decisions."
"I'm sorry, kid. You guys deserved a better teacher than a no-show like me." He pointed at his disheveled self almost as evidence of this statement. "I made decisions that put my own goals above the promises I made to you students and Japan. Those mistakes cost me a lot as you can guess."
"But hey, it happens, and a good kid like you doesn't need to hear me whine about it." He tried to redirect the conversation back to a friendlier topic. "But yeah, I love video games. I've been playing them my whole life and no one told me that adulthood required that I stop."
He chuckled a little at the end, a polite attempt to bring a little brevity back to the conversation. He would answer questions if he asked, to a certain limit, but a part of him hoped she wouldn't. Another part kinda wanted her too because it would be cathartic.
"What are you out working on?" He inquisited. "Something for a class or just something fun?"
