| Hard days made me, hard nights shaped me I don't know, they somehow saved me | |
When the two of them walked all the way up to the top of the hill, it felt easy compared to the rest of the challenges they faced that week. Stuff really wasn’t letting up very much. But Wes kept telling himself to forget that bunk...at least it was a simple task to get to the top of the hill in time for the sunrise. Just stay up until the right time and find a good spot. And they did just that, per Bishop's recommendation. Wes heaved a sigh as they reached the top, a bit tired-legged and lost in thought. It wasn’t really that tall of a hill compared to a lot of memorable places back home, but a good couple of stories tall was enough to see the skyline burst open that morning (and feel the burn of a decent leg workout too). Something in the air felt more fresh with each breath. Light brilliantly passed through the branch-sized spaces in a few tall trees down the hill, manifesting in thick, foggy bars. Then ribbons of morning fog were scared stiff and scattered by Nature's dimmer switch sliding to its on-position. >> "Pulling an all-nighter was definitely worth it for this. Not like it was much different then falling asleep an hour or two before sunrise, but still...I'm glad you pushed to do this, bro. It looks really great from here...and those huge trees almost blocked the sunrise for a moment. I didn't know tall trees like that grew in Japan, dude!"He sat down on the bench set for the view, and looked back at Bishop tossing some "breakfast" trail mix in his mouth by the handful. Wes was hoping that his brother was feeling just a bit more like himself today. The more times that life felt like normal, the easier it was to handle the times that were far from it. Normal in this case being similar to the way their lives used to be. The adventure and the chaos without all the desperation and stirring up trouble. Any kind of break in favor of their 'normal person' antics and adventures might have been essential to keep the two of them from getting on each other's nerves occasionally, out of stress. At least, that was the idea. >> "I'd bet the view is even better from the top of those trees...damn..."Wes buzzed his lips on the following exhale and rubbed his eyes for a moment. >> "How long you wanna stay here, bro? Your call. Maybe I could toss the ball around a bit or somethin' before we get hungry and tired again?...I certainly feel fine with a 10am bedtime, myself."▲ WORD COUNT: 447 ● NOTES:

throw out the map, don't look back Bishop knew full well that he hadn’t been...the nicest to his brother recently. It wasn’t even his fault entirely, the dog was getting harder and harder to shut up these days and his brother was just being so...against him recently. Rarely coming on his little ‘jobs’, starting to talk about how “wrong” what they were doing was...something had changed. But either way, that needed to be put aside for now. Wes needed a break, Bishop needed a break, and the dog needed a place where he couldn’t keep bitching about things. Something away, something physical to work out energy, something...well there was that hill they could see sometimes. Maybe that’d work. As they all crested the hill, Bishop knew he’d made a good choice suggesting they come up here. A break from the neon lights and sounds of the city felt...well, nice.
Finally quiet, we can hear ourselves think. We can. We should stay up here, but there’s nothing to eat up here, we have things to eat in the bag, calm down. Just relax and enjoy, mutt. He stopped at the top of the hill, quiet for a moment as he just took in a deep breath of fresher air, holding it...then letting it out slowly. He was no ‘live in nature’ hippie, but he’d be damned if that didn’t just *feel* good. He’d been pretty quiet coming up the hill just due to having music in, but as he took in the sight, Bishop finally spoke up.
“Fuck yeah man, who needs sleep when there’s stuff like this to see? Reminds me of those nights back home, just running by dark and sleeping after we saw the sun. ...Looks different here. Different colors or colors. ...Looks good.”
He stretched himself out, lifting his leg behind him to stretch it out before doing the same with the other. It’d been more of a walk than he’d expected, but that burn in his legs was a surprisingly nice feeling. Reminded him of training back home, running free in the night. Reminded him of better times. He put his music away, just taking a moment to enjoy the moment as the sun made its appearance. It wasn’t terribly hard for Wes to see that he was pretty much getting his wish: the dog seemed to have taken a backseat, and his brother was acting awfully close to what he once was. As Wes spoke of the trees, Bishop looked up, and a smirk spread over his face.
“Bet it is. We’re sure as hell not leaving yet though. Why rush it? We got nowhere to go, no one to see. And besides…”
At that, Bishop dipped his body and wrapped his arms around his brother. In one fell swoop, he hoisted him up and threw him onto his shoulders, a toothy grin stretched across his face.
“You’re goin’ up the tree. You know I can’t do it, the branches would break. But we’re not leaving until we know if it’s actually better of a view up there. We can throw the ball around and let the dog out when you’re back down, but we all want to know about that view. Now get up there before my shoulders go out, you’re a hell of a lot heavier when you’re not a fox. ...Leave the trail mix.”

| Hard days made me, hard nights shaped me I don't know, they somehow saved me | |
Wes experienced the long-familiar feeling of flying onto Bishop's shoulders. Nostalgia and G-force came together and his worries faded to a whisper. >> "You know what...yeah! I could totally do that."Fuck all this reluctance using his quirk at harmless times like this. It reminded Wes that he only really had 2 options when faced with his quirk and self-image. He could be more comfortable having shapeshifting powers and goof off every once in a while, or he could be miserable coping with something he couldn't change. No matter how much he thought a quirk like his could be hidden from the world, none of those curtains would be able to stay closed forever. Mistakes can and will happen in the future, so in the long term, Wes needed to start to approach things differently. Compared to his brothers', Wes had a pitiful quirk. But that didn't make it any less special. He just had to get used to it. More than he had been, at least. That couldn’t be too hard to do at a time like this. He pointed toward the next destination like the captain of a great war vessel. >> “Onwards! To victory!”Bishop started to lope his way down the hill from the opposite side they climbed up, towards the tallest tree in view. The park area surrounding them was still lacking any other visitors, a fact that was relaxing and encouraging for his mischief detectors. Bishop's shoulders clunked and trembled under Wes with each step, but he hardly broke a sweat all the way down the hill. Bishop had certainly kept his strength to match his weight. And there it was. The base of a huge Japanese cedar. And the start of a climb larger than he'd faced before. At first it might have seemed like a wash if anyone had seen the brothers from close-by and eavesdropped on their conversation. After all, a chain-link fence stood between them and the mission. But when had they ever been stopped by a fence before? The answer was "never". >> "Alright bro, make me a baseball in the neighbor's yard. I've got a sunrise to apprehend! You can probably find a way around and I’ll make some noise when I’m ready to jump down."▲ WORD COUNT: 378 ● NOTES:

throw out the map, don't look back “Hell yeah you can. If we could handle the park trees back home, we can handle some Japanese tree. Yeah, it’s bigger, but you’re a climber, you can handle it!”
He laughed a bit at that and shrugs. One of them had to be able to get to the vantage points at least! ...One of those times that Shiloh would have come in handy, he was made for this stuff, but not much to do about that now. ...They’d find him again someday. And take him to this same god damn tree, just because. He was gonna let that drag him down too hard today, he knew just as well as Wes how...shaky even his good days were these days. Even now he heard the dog in the back of his head, but he had stuff to do. This felt good, felt like the old days in a way. ...They’d been a bit smaller then, but he’d manage. He shot a teasing smile up to his brother as they made their way down the hill.
“I thought we were starving, but you’re heavy anyway. Guess we need to cut back on your parts of the meals.”
We ARE starving you idiot, I’m hungry, shut up dog. He snickered to himself at that, making a show of lifting his brother a bit more to adjust him on his shoulders. He wasn’t actually that heavy considering, but hey, what was a bit of a fun without making fun of Wes a little? He set his eyes on the tree in the distance, braced...then took off in a quicker run down the hill, just so he didn’t slip if Wes shifted too hard. It worked pretty well! ...Mostly. He had to readjust a couple times, and felt his boots slip a little, but he managed to stay up until they got there at least. He looked up to Wes to listen to him, nodding with a toothy grin.
“Fastball special it is. And don’t worry, I can hop the fence if I have to, but yeah, I’ll scope around for somewhere to get in.”
There was no actual fastball special, he couldn’t do that to Wes as a human. Instead, he lifted Wes off his shoulders, putting him down just long enough to roll his sleeves up a bit, then drops down to hold his hands out together.
“Alright, up ya go.”
He waited until Wes was standing on his hands before with one hard push, he boosted him over the fence with force! Hopefully Wes was good enough to land on his feet. ...Or at least not break his neck. That would put a damper on this whole day.
