"Ya know what, for one arm I think I'm doing pretty damn good here..."
Managing to finally flip a burger without it landing in the grass and soon after going in the trash, Mia was finally getting the hang of running her barbecue without the constant issues of wasting food. She'd been meaning to try and get this going for some time but each time she'd thought about sending out the invite she either talked herself out of it or, in the case of last time she tried... there was a zombie invasion of Tokyo she had to stop.
Ah well though, alls well that ends well so to speak and with her injuries from trying to protect the city still healing up Mia felt the other heroes and maybe some of the students might deserve a break. Sure, she'd meant for this whole thing to be a celebration of her birthday last month but ehhhh, celebrating the city standing till the next big disaster was probably reason enough to celebrate eh? That being said she still had a few decorations up. It was her cabin and a small patch of land she owned around it so she didn't care about the place being a mess to clean up. A few steamer things, got out a few lawn chairs and shit all out along the grass, there were some solid paving stones and shit from where she'd tried to build out from the cabin and where she was doing most of her barbecuing right now so the place didn't look all too bad in her eyes. Was just a matter of getting the bodies to fill it out.
She'd made sure to ask anyone she invited to maybe bring some beer too, while she had a cooler chock full of the shit (and some cider incase a certain bee showed up) She didn't know if she had enough for everyone who might come... ah knowing her no one would come so what was she worried about.
She'd thought to invite the heroes she worked with and some of the students she was close with, as well as the vigilantes who helped her out on that day of the zombie invasion. She wasn't even sure if her message got to them but it was a shot in the dark trying to find them on that weird 'tokyo underground' chat anyway, she tried her best whatever the case... now she just had to focus on the meat.
She had her fire pit up next to the barbecue itself, a stone well filled with charcoal and fire basically cooking a cauldron of different meats, and for the more classical barbecue vibe she was working one armed on some burgers and sausages. Not that the one arm she had was much better than the one in a sling. That poison Panzur fired at her had really done a number on her once the adrenaline kicked off. Sling should be off in a week but even the limbs she was using were all bandaged up to high heaven. Downsides of ignoring your body yelling at you to stop she guessed...
Now and then she'd glance over her shoulder down the path leading from the main roads up to her house, wondering if anyone might even bother dropping by... eh. If no one did, more meat for her she supposed...

Post by Jasmine Noir on Sept 20, 2020 18:40:19 GMT -4
A subtle yet incredibly exasperated sigh rolled off Jasmine's tongue. It had been a little over a week since the very out of the blue zombie invasion which left a good part of Tokyo city quite decimated and the wolf still felt like she'd been rolled over by a train. She had sustained a wide array of injuries, ranging from barely reparable bones in her arms to her lungs almost giving out from having been punctured by a few broken ribs, resulting in the lass almost drowning in her own blood. Frankly it was a miracle Jasmine even survived the whole thing. Had it not been for the strange lizard woman the student would've undoubtedly died.
She reminded herself to thank her. If she ever saw her again, that is.
Witch Doctor sure as shit had a field day ranting to the wolf about how reckless she was. Jasmine wouldn't in a million years argue back or be ungrateful in any way, but holy Christ could the Hero go on prolonged tangents. The headache that sometimes followed said tangents quite honestly felt like they ignored the painkillers Jasmine was now swimming in... and even then her whole body hurt like a motherfucker. Despite that, Jasmine had tried, by God did she try, to argue against the use of a goddamn wheelchair. Nimue wouldn't have it. It was either that and an escort, or she wouldn't be going. Period.
Much to her own chagrin, Jasmine relented. If only because this was Mia's birthday, and that she wasn't going to miss, death be damned.
"Sorry about this, Jack," the wolf breathed out, scratching her cheek with her semi-healthy left hand sheepishly. She absolutely hated having other people take care of her. "You really didn't need to bother..."
Despite her apprehension for allowing others to baby her like this, deep down she was ultimately glad the second year student had agreed to chaperone her. The fact that the girl was even able to move only a week after having sustained so many injuries and gone through surgery as a result was a miracle in and of itself. A miracle brought on by Nimue and the hospital staff's expertise, of course, but a miracle nonetheless. Yet despite that, the girl was still a mess. She was covered in bandages, neck to toe, dressed in a loose hoodie and sweatpants. Her right arm was still in a cast, having sustained the most damage during the fight. Luckily Jasmine's other arm was in better condition, meaning she could at least move it around some without it feeling like she'd break another bone or five.
"But, uh..." she slowly glanced over her shoulder. "Y'know. Thanks. For doing this, I mean. I'd really hate to miss Mia's birthday because of something like this." Jasmine glanced over at the sealed picture frame she had in her lap. A 60 by 90 centimeter frame, it was something Jasmine had been preparing to gift to Mia ever since she started trying her hand at art again. Even though she ended up being a little behind schedule, the lass was ultimately glad she ended up finishing it before Resident Evil came to fuck the town up. "Thanks for bringing this too, by the way. Hope she'll like it."
The two had been brought to the location by one of Nimue's nurses, driven over via a car modified to assist disabled individuals: in this case, namely someone on a wheelchair. Jasmine was forbidden to get out of it even if it was just to get in and out of a car. She absolutely loathed that idea and it showed on her face plain as day, but... yeah she had to admit, even getting from her bed into the wheelchair felt like someone had stabbed a kitchen knife in her side, painkillers or not.
Jack had helped Jasmine out and drove her wheelchair into Mia's property. The wolf's eyes quickly spotted the herculean frame of her mentor. A somewhat tired yet warm smile spread across her face. "Hey Mia," she said. "How's recovery treating you? I'm kind of surprised you even managed to set this thing up given how utterly screwed we were back in the city."
There was another girl there, one she felt she vaguely recognized but couldn't really put her finger on it. Whichever the case was, the lass figured she'd get to know her eventually.

LATE BIRTHDAY BASH IT WASN'T OFTEN THAT TERUKO received invites to parties, these days. Even rarer that such invites would come from such a prominent public figure as Redhorn. And yet, the professional hero herself had extended the invitation for Teruko and Enda to join her. And though Teruko was busily trying to forget a lot of what reminded her of that day, you couldn't turn-down a birthday invitation from one of Japan's top heroes.
Of course, she lived way out in the outskirts, in a cabin. Not walkable. Thankfully Teruko had an enormous cargo van meant for transporting cakes to catered events which, in a pinch, could also transport her. Though… with all the kids she'd "adopted"... investing in a small school bus was likely in her future.
Anyways-- Teruko had clambered in through the back of the cargo van, dropping the passenger seat and carefully coiling her tail in the back. She'd rested her chin across folded arms on the still-folded passenger seat, the sunlight flickering across her eyelids. Two cake boxes sat on the unoccupied floor of the passenger seat, one atop the other-- a small gift from a rather accomplished baker of cakes.
Teruko lazily opened her eyes, adjusting her position so as to free one hand. She brushed Enda's arm with one knuckle, smiling faintly.
"Thanks again for driving, E," Teruko purred, "It's hard staying hunched for such a long time, when I drive. I really do appreciate it.."
Of all the awful stuff that'd happened that day, of all the stuff she'd rather forget, Enda was one good thing that'd come from it. Enda was one thing she wanted to remember. Sure, they'd known each other prior to that, but… well… a lot changed on that day.
The kaiju let her hand settle again, watching as the view out the window panned left and became flanked by trees. The road grew bumpier, and the roughness persisted a while until the car came to a stop. The crocodilian sat a little taller.
"Cute place."
She'd start to uncoil herself, the van groaning miserably as she shifted her weight to reach for the door. She managed to open the rear doors on her own, and spilled out carefully, adjusting her clothes.
Teruko was dressed in a modest, effeminate outfit. A blouse, high-waisted jeans, and a billowing gauzy cardigan. She took a moment to straighten her clothes, before skirting around the edge of the van to retrieve the cakes. She pulled the door open, but then hesitated, sighing shakily.
Teruko should lift her gaze as her svelte companion came into view again, reluctantly cracking a smile.
"Enda, I…" she started. It had been a week. Business was closed as Tokyo and the surrounding areas pieced themselves back together. Teruko, too, was trying to cobble her own sense of normalcy back together, but she felt so… frayed, "I don't know if I'm ready for this."
At the very least, Redhorn would be there. And if Blondie had been Redhorn's apprentice, she'd likely be there too. Not to mention any pro heroes with close personal ties to the woman.
"What if it's some kind of sting operation?" she persisted in hushed tones, smiling wryly. It would be just their luck, "I have a record, you know. And I'm easily recognizable..."

Post by Hachi Tsutsuji on Sept 22, 2020 14:04:40 GMT -4
I want to sit under my own vine and fig tree, a moment alone in the shade.
"And remember that high shelves will do nothing to keep him away from dangerous objects. Be sure to have locked your power tools in cases or the like. My phone will be on and loud if you need to contact me."
Tsutsuji Hachi was on the phone as she made her way toward a little get-together that she hadn't exactly made plans to attend. It wasn't in her nature to be spontaneous, nor was she very good at stepping away from her work for anything resembling a break, let alone a party. However, as of several weeks ago, she was no longer living alone at home where she could try futilely to separate herself from the stress of hero work, teaching, and the ever present emotional scars left over from...well, name an incident. Now her home was not only inhabited by a small child she was happily caring for, but also that of a flat mate with whom she still had a hard time speaking to about things not revolving around their shared work as heroes.
Tobias was very kind and ridiculously generous in offering to let her and Shiloh move in with him. It was mutually beneficial as well; the house in question was too large for just him alone, and she needed to move at risk of one of Thunder's men finding her home (and nobody was more paranoid about being found than Tobias), and it meant that Shiloh was never alone when one of them was on patrol or otherwise working. It was almost like him having a mother and father, although the two of them were in no way romantic toward the other. Hachi didn't experience those feelings, neither emotionally or physically. And dating a co-worker would not only be unprofessional but difficult with their line of work. Too many risks and emotional stakes.
So why in the name of all that was holy had she agreed to leave Shiloh in the care of some of her students for the afternoon and evening while she went out here?Well, it was partially Mikhail's fault. He talked her into it. But it was also because she did need a moment of peace, especially after this last...consistent three years.
Yeah let's go with that.
So here she was, a sunhat shrouding her enormous red eyes--one of which, the left, was still brutally maimed by a jagged lightning-shaped scar--and otherwise alien face, and a simple blue sundress otherwise covering her form as she touched down a little ways off from the location. She did still have a license to fly. And her vision wasn't so compromised that she couldn't fly through entirely open air (as opposed to the twists and turns of city buildings), but she still didn't want to be seen and scolded for over-exerting herself. Look, she had wings, she was going to use them. Especially when there wasn't a car in the world that suited her figure.
It was partially a birthday celebration, albeit a late one, and partially a well-deserved hoorah over the end of a truly nightmarish disaster. Hachi wasn't quite sure what category of disaster a "faux zombie apocalypse" fell under but it would likely be added to one sooner or later. She wasn't sure how exactly to approach the host. Given their last in-person conversations had been fine, but their last few online interactions had been of a less cordial and more difficult sort, she was unsure if the woman really wanted her here. Hachi was never very good with rejection. But she loved the outdoors, and had needed a chance to be outside the city.
So...hopefully this would be alright by Mia.
As she hovered at a normal speed and only a couple inches off the ground towards the cabin, and saw some familiar faces. Jasmine Noir was here, of course. From her first year the girl had been a favorite of Mia's--they apparently had a lot in common, and although Hachi had only known her in passing, they did have a similar air about them. There was another student, though not one that she recognized from her face alone. A lithe little thing with an overall gray tint to her entire body. It reminded her of Risaka Reinacht, had that student been a few years younger and a few inches shorter.
Hachi spotted the head of blonde hair (and one very large protruding red horn) near what smelled like an American barbecue, She tapped her claws against her phone before sliding it into her purse, and from it drew out a pair of objects. One was a bottle of sake, one that she had been recommended for its apparent good pairing with red meat. That was a gift for the party.
But there was a smaller box as well, this one actually wrapped with red paper and a thin white bow. If there was ever a chance to bridge whatever gap had been left between the two of them now was a good chance. Hachi was an adult, and as Mia's elder by over ten years (which was shocking to her at times) she wouldn't let a disagreement paint the rest of the day. She was sure Mia would do the same. A lot of time had passed.
I still said some pretty unfair things to her...
Hachi approached, tapping the bottle against her claws to make a pleasant clicking sound to herald her approach since she wasn't making footsteps. "Hello. Is there a good place to set this? It is better chilled, from what I was told." Hachi glanced to the side, although her eyes didn't show this with how they functioned, and she held out the red box towards Mia. "This is a gift for your birthday. I wasn't sure what you like, or if this suits your style. I hope you at least find it amusing."
Inside was a pair of earrings; small, sterling silver and intricately detailed oni masks, each with a pair of sharp horns and both with two little rings with small skull-shaped rubies hanging attached to them.
"Happy belated birthday, Kearney-san."

[nospaces][googlefont=Open+Sans:400,700,700i|Oswald:300,600] [attr=class, punkienda] [attr=class,absolute-holder] [attr=class,image-back accentbg] [attr=class, image] [attr=class,line1] [attr=class,line2] [attr=class, wordcount] tooth fairy [attr=class,lyric1] i'm sorry, not sorry [attr=class,lyric2] for what i said [attr=class, bulk] HOLY SHIT, IT'S A GOOD THING HE KNEW HOW TO DRIVE CONFIDENTLY ENOUGH! [break][break] Man! Who would have thought driving some chonky ass cars in the past would benefit him in the here and now?! Sure, his leg was pretty fucked up, but he welcomed the pain all the same like a normal, sane person welcomes cuddly, warm hugs! In fact, it put him in such a good mood and he couldn't help but happily hum along the drive amidst the silence as though nothing totally traumatic happened. Ah well, he'd been in a much better headspace than before since his grrrrrrrrand return from Ireland, so that was something and he was actually feeling pretty damn confident in himself! Though he was admittedly pretty damn worried about how Teruko as of late and couldn't bring himself to doll up a whole lot, like some glittery gold and reddish-orange eye shadow to accent his eyes and yellow painted nails accented by dark red swirlds that would glow in the freaking dark...and some light pink lip gloss. [break][break] The rest of his outfit was a black zip up hoodie that had a punk vibe to it and rather form fitting to show some effort, three large silver rings at the rim of the hood and four trimming the pockets. Even though he wore finger-less gloves, he still took the liberty of chopping little thumb holes in his jackets like a bad habit! The pants were essentially dark blue skinny jeans and a pair of red sneakers with black accents here and there, it was comfortable enough to him and looked nice enough for a party...well uhhhhhhhh at least he thought so! Ah well, important thing is they were going to this party and being like some rad pair of moral support for someone who helped save their lives! HELL YEAH! In fact, he even took that memo to heart about bringing some booze along for the ride and had a cooler loaded to the goddamn brim with different types of beer and some foo foo hard lemonade too. [break][break] You know, variety was important! Of course, he didn't plan on getting totally sloshed since he felt like it might be better to stay kiiiiiiiiinda sorta definitely sober until Teruko eased up a little more. That cooler was sitting right on over in the back seat next to a wrapped up box which had about five different gloves, all of which had hard knuckles built since he really wasn't sure what to get as a gift....and a couple big bottles of sake. The gloves kept the bottles from clanging against each other, so that worked out pretty well. He figured sake was delicious, especially for special occasions...oooooor whenever and the gloves could be handy for Redhorn when it came to beating the shit out of criminals when push came to shove. [break][break] It was crazy how he had to play with the arrangements so everything could be all comfy cozy and not smoosh the cakes, but everything was hella worth! Plus, he had a shred of envy for how comfortable his queen of the kaiju looked pretty relaxed at the corner of his eye...so hey, it made him happy to be her chauffeur today. Though like a good boy, his eyes were focused on the road and making clear he didn't get ten points---errrrrrrrr NOT HIT ANYONE. YEAH, not hit anyone, gotta make sure those wacky civilians don't become road kill. Plus, the drive was oddly therapeutic and kinda peaceful? [break][break] Kinda trippy, maybe he should offer to drive more often? [break][break] Hmmm...yeah, maybe! With a smile playing across his lips, he couldn't help it when he felt her knuckles brush against his arm. "Mmm~? Like yeah, any time you need me to drive, s'long as I'm not busy, I got'chu~" Chuckling softly under his breath, he let out a gentle sigh that almost rolled out like a melodic hum. Once the got there, he parked the car in a nice little spot and couldn't help but admire how damn cute this place was! Definitely had some charm for sure, though the dash of paranoia in his brain was like pssssst, it sure would be hard to run away if shit hit the fan, eh? and he shoo'd that thought away for a hot second. Getting out of the car and idly pocketing the keys, he brought his hand up to shield his eyes from the sun while looking around like some bemused teen who was hype about getting out after a long drive to the more nature-y side of things. Taking in a nice, deep breath of fresh air before exhaling and closing the door, he'd make his way over to the lovely lady he'd been invited along with and was about to help with getting all the stuff outta the car. [break][break] Eh... [break][break] ....but why did she seem kinda anxious? [break][break] Oh right, vigilantism was illeeeeeegal and they absolutely didn't abide by the law in favor of their brand of justice, did they? "Eh?" Muttering that out as he lightly tilt his head and arched a brow, he brought his hand up to her shoulder, giving it a gentle rub that seemed to silently say it's okay, I'm right here for you, all while she found her words. She...wasn't sure if she was ready for this? He felt his heart skip a beat as he wondered if maybe she meant being around with him or...the whole socializing in a party thing. Or oooooooh fuck, was it both?! Maybe the rest of her words shouldn't have brought him a sense of solace...but they did. It comforted him that at least he wasn't making her feel uneasy...at least the anxious air plaguing her wasn't his fault. [break][break] "...hun, if it's a sting operation, I'll get you outta here as fast as I can..." Saying those words softly beneath his breath, he slid his arm from her shoulder and across her back before pulling her closer so she could kinda of lean on him while she calmed her nerves. Though he had to be careful about re-opening that fussy, dumb slowly but surely healing wound on the calve of his left leg...namely so it wouldn't bleed and fuck up his pants. Granted, he had some bandages and what not to help in case the stitches didn't hold...but he was trying his best to take it easy all the same. Most of his energy was focused on tending to making sure Teruko was alright...so that helped keep his ass out of trouble for sure... "...I promise I will, kay? I don't think Redhorn's a huge bitch to roll with something like that, but if she is, I'll get'cha outta here...I've got you, I really do, Teruko..."[break][break] Those words were spoken with the utmost sincerity...he...mostly didn't feel like this was some danger zone, but he'd be lying if he claimed there was zero concern toward her own fears. They were rational enough and had reasonable foundation...but something about the pro hero didn't strike him as being a mega bitch like that. Why the fuck go out of your way just to screw people over who helped you in a time of crisis...? That didn't seem to match up with her at all, not even a little. Yet, with how the lovely baker was at the moment...it was better to just assure her that he'd be ready for the worst. Trying to rationalize with anxiety after all she'd been through seemed like an uphill climb...so he wanted to go with a more gentle, empathetic approach with comforting her. Rushing her into the party like this was a bad idea...so he'd get her a little more calm at the very least before following the scent of awesome bbq food in the works. Thinking back on it, Jack had never really been much of a party person. Sure, he had been to maybe one other party in the past, but even then he was more in his own corner with the people he knew best at the time. Growing up, of course, he had never really been invited to any parties, for obvious reasons. Nowadays, he could maybe consider himself more outgoing, at the least. Maybe this wouldn't be too bad of an experience.
Then again, it was also Ms. Kearney's birthday as well - as well as a celebration to those who survived the zombie and Tokyo situations. He didn't really know all of his teacher's friends that well, so he was certainly anxious, to say the least. Then again, he certainly needed the vacation, considering all that had happened recently with Meara and Ishtar...and of course, himself. Did anyone even know about that, he wondered? There wasn't as much of a fuss made in comparison to when Meara was kidnapped...maybe no one really did notice. Or really care.
Jack was staring aimlessly with his thoughts out the side of the car when Jaz spoke up about helping her out. His thoughts quickly returned to the present, recalling all that had happened. Right...she had gotten injured during the Zombie crap, and was still recovering. She seemed rather reluctant with her thanks, implying that she was a bother of some kind. The dragon boy gave a brief chuckle and gave her the sharp-toothed smile he was known for. "Bahhh, don't sweat it, amiga. You would've done the same if the roles were flipped. I'm just doing what I do, no sweats about it," he replied, the warm kindness in his eyes as strong as ever. However...there was certainly a dull undertone in his eyes - like he still meant it, but had to try harder than normal to show it.
She then thanked him again for bringing her present as well - a beautiful painting of her and Mia, and very well crafted. Jack, meanwhile, had his own box in his lap, which was a bit custom made in its own right - just not by him, sadly. Nonetheless, he hoped that their teacher would like their gifts. "It's beautiful, Jaz. I'm sure she'll love it," he replied, keeping the optimism going as best as he really could at the moment. It was harder than he would expect...his chest was still a bit tight, but it was probably more anxiety than anything.
Finally, they would arrive at Mia's place. It wasn't much, but the smell of barbeque in the air and the people that were already here certainly gave it a homey feel. Jack smiled, adjusting quickly to the atmosphere. He would help Jaz out of the car and into her wheelchair, and of course, gave her her gift. "Just don't stress yourself too much, ok? If we need to go back, just give the word. I'll get a taxi here as soon as I can," he said. He knew that his senpai was as strong as she was - maybe even on par with Yumi and Tetsuko, if not stronger - but he couldn't help but worry over those in a condition like hers. It was in his nature, more or less.
He would then roll Jaz over to where Mia was, the smaller of her students smiling brightly at her. "Happy Birthday, Ms. Kearney!" he said happily, his tail wagging. He would set down his gift wherever she would motion to, and promptly make idle chat with her and Jaz. It wasn't before long that he would hear a familiar voice heading towards them.
Ms. Tsutsuji made her way over to the group. He had meant to intern under her, but...well, a lot had happened over the last couple of month. Nonetheless, he smiled brightly at the hero, his tail wagging somehow even faster than before as he saw more familiar faces, making it easier to get comfortable with his environment. "Hello, Ms. Tsutsuji! It's good to see you well!" he chirped happily, smiling widely. From here, he would just try to keep quiet for a moment. He would probably go say a cheerful hello to his boss in a moment - he just didn't want to be a spazz about it just yet.

With people starting to arrive Mia lifted the grill up a few layers from the flame so it didn't burn while she was greeting people. Even bandaged up to fuck and with her arm in a sling she still had an air of chipperness to her today of all days. Sure it wasn't actually her birthday but she had a day off, her own well made food, and she was gonna see some of the people closest to her outside of her family, and heck, maybe see who even gave a damn about her out of the heroes. That was gonna be a fun little testeroony~.
First up to arrive was a student and a little more accurately a kid from her past, Michi. They seemed a little shy in arriving and... well Mia wasn't sure why. She hadn't really seen the kid at all since their last talk so she couldn't imagine why she seemed so freaked out, ruffling her silver hair as she came over with her good arm. "I... have no idea what yer going on about kid?" She let out a chuckle and hooked her arm around the back of their neck, giving them a tight but even for Mia's strength still just a playful squeeze. "Glad to have ya here! People seem to be parking up from what I can hear so don't fret about it being just us two or anything."
Next up though, Jaz. Ah as if a bunch of internal bleeding and shattered bones was gonna keep that girl out of the action for long. She walked over with a bright ass grin even seeing her in a wheelchair, looking over the state of her. "What you talkin' about? I just had a burning poison eating away at my muscles. If that's all they got for me I'm gonna live forever bitch!~" She chimed with a wide ass grin, shooting a smile at Jack too. "Thanks for bringin' her kid. Course you were always invited too, you just get bonus points for bringin ma' main gal!~"
Mia noticed the present in her lap but wasn't about to start getting grubby with those things, instead looking to the fact her arm was in a cast and gasped dramatically, crouching down beside her so her sling matched up with her own cast. "Eyyyy look at us. Cripple buddies!~"
Chuckling as she laughed off their death risking injuries, Mia rose back up to her full height, flexing her other arm with a bit of a wince, clearly a little in pain but pulling through it with a grin. "Seriously though, I ain't about to let that shit slow me down. Already ruined my birthday so I'm gonna celebrate on their second-graves."
Next up on the Arrivals was Hachi, who gave their present from the get go, Mia taking it in her free palm. "Heh, thanks, hey I'll open it in a sec but-" She started to walk over to an ice cooler next to where she was keeping the drinks, patting it. "Sake can go here if it needs to be chilled, but for yoooou..." She caught the necks of 3 bottles in her hand between her fingers. "I got cider, apple juice, and orange juice, aaaaand I got alcohol free cider if thats more your speed. I wasn't sure what you liked so I covered all the bases AAAAAND-" Putting the bottles down she reached across and grabbed a straw just to show it. "Cause I know you got those tiny mouth problems.~" She stuck out her tongue, clearly just playing with that tease.
"Glad y'all could make it though... I was expecting a handful more but I guess heroes gonna be busy being heroes. Now, before I dig into the wrapping paper, any more presents I should know about?~"

Jasmine gave Jack a sideways glance, having noticed the peculiar expression on his face she knew all too well. The kid was trying his damndest to keep something under wraps but as curious as she was the wolf wasn't about to poke the bear. Not the time nor place. Today was Mia's birthday and that's what she was there for -- frankly in her current state that was the only thing she could handle to begin with.
She lowered her head a little, messy platinum blonde bangs falling over her eyes. A small smile made its way to her lips, "Thanks. I really hope she does," Jasmine said, her healthy hand playing with the edges of the paper her gift was wrapped in. The wolf was never one to feel anxious about anything -- well, most things, anyway. But this was a little different. Not only was she giving something to one of the people who she considered family, it was also something that she herself made. Something she didn't think she'd be trying her hand at again.
Her underclassman's voice brought her out of her little stupor, making her blink and glance up at him, "Oh, don't worry. I'll be alright. But thanks!"
When Mia approached, Jasmine couldn't help the snort that left her, "Yeah, yeah, you keep flexing like that you'll end up bursting a blood vessel," she teased back idly. A warm smile came over her. Jasmine was well aware that Mia was a borderline freak of nature -- there was absolutely no way what happened back there was going to keep her down for long. Still, she was glad to see her having - mostly - recovered. "And yeah, Jack's been a big help today. Pretty sure if it weren't for him Nimue wouldn't have even let me get out of bed, let alone come here. Christ I hate being stuck in the hospital."
The next few lines from the pro forced a chuckle out of the wolf, "Cripple buddies, huh? That's a new one," she commented, a little amused. "But yeah, glad to see you're doing good. I'm... well, getting there. Heh."
A few other people had joined in on the soon-to-be festivities. People she more or less recognized. Hachi Tsutsuji - one of their teachers. Jasmine's never had a real conversation with her outside a few occasions in the school chat room, but as far as she remembered Rin quite liked her. She smiled, "Good to see you back in action, teach. Been a while."
Then, a ways away, were two people she remembered having been with them during the fight against Torn. Jasmine didn't know their names but there was no way she'd not recognize the woman who was the reason Jasmine was even alive and the guy who tried to help her when she was getting the shit beat out of her. She made a mental note to go over to them to give her thanks.
Speaking of. Jasmine turned to Jack, "Hey, Jack? Feel free to go have fun. This thing's been modified for me so even with my arms a little screwed over I can still move it around by myself, no sweat!" she said, gesturing to the wheelchair and her bandaged arm. Again, she smiled; she'd been doing that a lot lately. "If I need any help, I'll call you over. Promise."
Red Horn had gone over to talk up with Hachi for a little while, pointing out the assortment of beverages available. Christ what she wouldn't give for a glass of liquor right about now. Then again with how many painkillers she had swimming in her system that'd probably do more bad than good. Jasmine swallowed down some saliva at the mention of gifts, a pang of anxiety crossing her chest momentarily.
Fuck it. Now or never.
"Uh... hey, Mia? I, uh... I got- drew this for you," she said, handing over the wrapped up painting to the larger woman, her hands a little shaky, yet whether it was because of her physical or mental state, she couldn't tell you. When Mia unwrapped it, she'd see a graffiti-esque painting drawn in watercolor. She'd see herself - a large, bulky, grinning figure - with one large hand on her hip while the other was on top of a shorter Jasmine's head - something that Mia seemed to enjoy doing, much to the wolf's chagrin. Jasmine herself seemed to be pouting, her eyes a little irritated, yet her expression was drawn in a way that betrayed what was a budding smile.
The top of the piece read: To my sister and the greatest Hero alive...
The bottom: Happy Birthday, Horny!
Below that: Love, Jasmine - and the end of the e connected into a small heart.
The lass chuckled uneasily, "So, uh, yeah... hope you like it?" She glanced up at her, pulling some mental dexterity together to be able to show her a toothy grin. "Happy birthday!"

LATE BIRTHDAY BASH OKAY, SO TERUKO WASN'T THE MOS articulate when she was nervous. But thankfully Enda was able to intuit what was worrying her—a consoling hand found its way to Teruko’s sleeve-clad shoulder, rubbing it gently. Her heart keened slightly, her smile soft and apologetic. It was a stupid concern, particularly for someone with decades of vigilante experience under their belt. But… honestly… the zombie fiasco had left her understandably frail.
Enda spoke soft, reassuring words, pulling Teruko into a sort of one-armed hug. Teruko nestled under his chin, a quiet purr rumbling in her chest. He really was a sweet guy. The crocodilian returned the one-armed hug, looping an arm around the small of his back, listening to his words. She knew they weren’t empty—they’d weathered a fucking zombie apocalypse together. If he said he’d get her out of there, Enda sure as fuck meant it.
“I’ve got you, too,” Teruko echoed, still nuzzling against Enda, “We’ve got each other.”
Something about that felt like a confession. And something about that realization was thrilling.
Redhorn didn’t seem like the kind of person to pull shit like that on her own volition—but heroes were so entrenched in their bureaucracy—Teruko inhaled deeply and then sighed, trying to shake free of the thought. She unspooled herself from the cozy little spot next to Enda, her taloned hand lingering on his side for a moment.
“We can… sound it out? At least give her the cake,” Teruko remarked, still a little lukewarm on the idea of the party. She let her hand fall, looking tiredly (but warmly) at Enda, “If it feels suspect, we can bounce after staying for a… polite amount of time?”
Having steeled herself, Teruko finally dipped in through the door of the van, her clawed hands finding the nondescript, white boxes that contained each of the cakes. They were braced between her two arms as Teruko righted herself, and she used her tail to press the door shut behind her.
Another deep breath followed by a sigh.
“It’ll be fine,” she murmured, “Totally fine.”
The pair followed the road towards the house, which murmurs of life could be heard from already. They seemed to be outside, perhaps in the backyard, just out of view. The kaiju took the lead, treading carefully past the front entrance and around the edge of the house. The smell of barbecue hit her senses before she saw the small gathering. Teruko paused, evaluating the assembly before them. Redhorn was tending to the barbecue, and—oh wow, was that Yellow Jacket?—Teruko couldn’t help but feel mildly star-struck, despite her status as an ex-actress. This really was the big leagues. There was also a familiar, fluffy head of Jack Orion, one of Teruko’s counter-staff, the blonde head of the sidekick that Teruko had whisked away from the studio, and one silver-haired child that Teruko had never seen before.
It then dawned-on Teruko that she didn’t know Redhorn’s real name, and calling her by her hero name might be… weird. So she opted for something more casual.
“Ooooiiiiii!” she greeted in a booming, cheerful voice that betrayed none of her anxiety, “We come bearing cake!”
How was that for an introduction? There was still a nervousness churning in her chest, but she’d just… power through it. S-somehow. Redhorn already seemed to be receiving a gift with the blondie, who was (at-present) wheelchair-bound. That made the nervousness bloom a little, so Teruko sought-out an empty tabletop in the shade, and went carefully towards said table to deposit the cake.
She set the cake-boxes one next to the other. Then Teruko turned to greet the hostess of the party herself, a bit more personally.
Teruko approached the small crowd, ruffling Jack’s hair along the way.
“Fancy seeing you here, kid,” she said congenially, grinning.
Teruko then patted Redhorn’s shoulder, away from any injuries or bandages, like they were old friends.
“Happy Belated Birthday,” Teruko said mildly, “And thank you for having us. The little box is dessert for you. The big box is free game, dessert for everyone.”
And then, Blondie. She was looking better, but still rough—it’d take more than a week of healing to repair what had been done.
“Good to see you too, kid,” Teruko said with a smile. Her poker-face was enviable. Warm, smiling… not as nervous as she was on the inside. Teruko wanted to talk. Desperately. But the last thing she wanted was for Jack to know that his boss was a vigilante.
Teruko didn’t linger on that for too long. She had to portray an air of casualness, she couldn’t let the heavy thoughts settle, “So what’s the set-up, Red? Tell me where the important stuff is!”
Food, drink… the essentials!

I want to sit under my own vine and fig tree, a moment alone in the shade.
Hachi was momentarily distracted from Mia by voices she recognized, and she turned to look down at the young Jack Orion whom she knew from school and from nearly being her intern. She felt guilt mix into her already off-set nerves. She had wanted to do more for him, especially given his natural flying ability and his obvious need for praise and positive reinforcement. But her injuries and then the following chaos meant it had all been delayed. Would he hold that against her?
It didn't appear that he did, but Hachi's worries were hard to calm. "Good afternoon, Mr. Orion. Thank you. I hope you're having a pleasant day yourself." The next voice got another look and small bow. "Thank you, Miss Noir. It's good to be back. I hope you have a smooth recovery and return to class quickly."
Of the three students she recognized here, Jasmine was definitely the worst one off in terms of body damage. The poor girl. She hadn't read every report as to what had occurred during the zombie attack, but she had been privy to the infirmary and hospital accounts due to some of her students being either part of the healing team or part of those injured. But Jasmine looked to be in high enough spirits. Mia certainly was helping.
Their relationship was very nice.
But it also made her a little sad.
Mia took back her attention quickly by directing her to a cooler in which she could put the sake, but not before she produced a trio of drinks and holding them in view. Hachi was almost about to say she didn't drink alcohol until Mia explained, and her mouth shrunk into a small dot on her face. Oh. She had gone out of her way to provide drinks that she could consume...not only juices, but even cider, alcoholic and not. That was so generous and it made her claws fidget around the sake bottle--at least until Mia drew out a straw and teased her. Hachi could not blush given the nature of her exoskeleton but there was a way her shoulders stiffened and the two antenna in her hair twitched that indicated something.
After a moment of silence, Hachi opened her mouth just a little bit, and unrolling like a cord came a long, thin tube like organ. Her tongue. Which, for any who had ever once seen a butterfly or bee eat from a flower, would be quite recognizable. She immediately drew it back in and hoped that her little joke would go well. Some people were disturbed by other Quirks but she had faith that at least those here would be tolerant.
"I...yes. Those are perfect. Thank you, Kearney-san." Hachi placed the sake into the cooler and at the same time drew out a bottle of cider--the non-alcoholic sort, though as it was fermented apples all the same...the effect would be just as much for her bee-like biology. She easily popped the cap off with a claw before bringing it to her mouth like she was going to blow into it, but instead let her tongue slip down into the bottle and begin to drink like it was the most natural thing in the world. Which to be fair, to her, it was.
Mia and Jasmine were having a small moment when another person--pair of people--approached, and while the gentleman in the hoodie wasn't familiar to her...
Is that--
Hachi paused her sipping and kept her eyes--well, eye, technically, with the whole half-blind thing--on the only person present who could make Hachi feel short. She was momentarily stunned but that wasn't the reason. This person (or woman, from the tone of her voice, but it was still not fair to assume) looked remarkably like a certain film sensation that Hachi had grown up on. It had come at quite the perfect time for her, both as a child in need of entertainment and as somebody with such an extreme mutation. Kamirex may have been simple Kaiju films but the woman at its core was much more than a monster. Alas, the actress had stopped being in the films right in time for Hachi to become old enough to actually look into her as a person.
This could just be another individual with a Quirk that made them appear like the Kaiju of films past. But what if it wasn't just a wild coincidence, and this person really was the film star Serizawa Teruko?
I'm staring.
Hachi sharply looked away and focused instead on Mia and Jasmine, finding them having another moment, and just as quickly focused instead on her bottle. She felt suddenly quite uncomfortable in that pleasant social anxiety sort of way that was the main reason she didn't attend these sort of gatherings, but unlike those ones this was one where she wasn't necessarily having a bad time. She wasn't. The bad didn't outweigh the good.
She was just an awkward fumbling bumble bee. So she went back to quietly drinking her drink and hoping that the Kamirex-alike (or the Kamirex herself) hadn't seen her staring. Or if she had, that she had seen it as a good thing...? Hachi knew that she looked intimidating.
Though of all those in the world who might empathize...

O-oh good gods, he absolutely loved it when she nuzzled into him and it felt like a reward in of itself for this very moment and he couldn't help but have a warm smile residing across his lips...pulling her in closer. There was something straight up magical about knowing she actually trusted him when he spent so long being unable to trust himself, feeling like he wasn't worth trusting and completely unreliable...yet he proved himself wrong. Over and over, it was the best broken record in his life, the one thing he was euphoric about when it came to being wrong...the fact that he wasn't some piece of shit that only fucked things up. "M-mm...mhm, yeah, we'll sound it out, hun! I'll help you make a polite exit if we gotta so like it's all good~" It was just...so fucking nice to be trusted.
[break][break]
Nuzzling his cheek against her snout for a moment, he couldn't wipe that big grin across his lips and didn't stop her from getting ready to head on over to say hi to the birthday girl! "You got this, you totally got this on lock down!" With his free hand, he lightly pumped his fist and offered up a wink as his smile was like the foundation of sheer confidence, he wasn't gonna let her down. As long as it was within his power, he'd keep doing his best to support the kaiju woman of his dreams like a pillar of hope, a beacon to aid in guiding her when times were tough...he'd always try for her no matter what. Even as a pro, if he made the cut, he was gonna surprise her by still supporting her all the way!
[break][break]
The lanky guy with bright golden eyes, centered by cat-like slits let out a happy sigh and got out the cooler that was nestled beneath the cakes as with the gift he got which had more thought put into it than he planned. Honestly, he didn't know much about the pros on a personal level, so he worked with what he knew and was gonna wish for the best with a big ol box with two decently sized bottles of sake nestled among hard knuckle gloves to help the glass from clanging against each other. Stacking it on the cooler after pulling up the handle, away from the doors so Teruko could close it up, though before they left, he locked the van up and stuffed the keys in his pocket. Tilting the cooler back, he followed after the retired actress and held up his hand, waving like he was trying to impress the masses like a pageant queen. Maybe being a little extra and balancing out the awkward would help?
[break][break]
"AAAAND EXTRA BOOZE, HELL YEAH~!" Practically cackling after those words, seeing Teruko go around, it seemed like...she was managing well enough? Huh...okay, he'd juuuuust go ahead and park his stuff and sneak away to the snacks or something? Let the kaiju enjoy her time and all that good stuff? That sounded good, he was oddly enough the sort to hide in a corner and fiddle with his phone more often than not and blend in with the background like a total wallflower...aaaaaand drink...aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand snack...okay less like a flower and more like a freaking gremlin, whatever! Well he parked the cooler next to the other drinks, then hefted the box up with a wince since even though he liked the pain, his body's nerves were more or less like listen here you sadomasochistic little shit, ya gotta relax and McChill from moving around so much.
[break][break]
Clearing his throat, he set the nicely wrapped box, one that had a bunch of little Redhorn chibis all over it doing a bunch of dramatic poses with the rest of the gifts. He figured she might get a kick out of having something for her wrapped in some of her own merch, who knows! "Happy birthday, you hardcore badass! I totally wasn't sure what to get, but like, I hope it's good enough! At least, like, the stuff my queen made will taste damn good, though!" Once his hands were free, he put one hand on his hip and reached up to lightly fuss with his bangs a bit in a slight nervous tick.
[break][break]
Before he could check in on who he nicknamed Boom Babe, he caught a glance of a big ol' bee lady staring at Teruko...who...er...wasn't she that chick who got slashed in the face by Thunder some time ago? Standing there with his eyes darting back and forth between the two for a moment, he shuffled a little closer to the beefy blonde oni from the land of Texas and whispered, "Psssssst, like...oh mi gawd...is...like...is she totally a Kamirex fan?" In a way, he was kinda curious and part of his gremlin nature was itching to see what would happen if he introduced the two. Might help Teruko chill to realize one of the hot shot pros looked up to her, right?

(Jack gave permission to be skipped this round)
Mia shot Jack an appreciative smile as Jaz didn't try and undersell the role he had in getting her here, it definitely wouldn't have been her birthday without Jasmine here, at least, not this fake secondary birthday. She'd spent the real one with her blood relatives amidst all the chaos going on the past month but this one... yeah, it'd have felt a bit hollow without Jasmine here. Still, she didn't harass her girl too much and did need to get Hachi seeing what there was for her to drink which developed...oddly.
It was always a little hard to read the bee woman's expressions, not just because of her face but she always came off as a rather stiff person in expressions... no. Stiff wasn't right... reserved? That might have been better, she clearly felt things of course but her expressions seemed muted both in her ability to make them and any desire to, maybe it was just Mia, but her tone always hit her ears like that. Whatever the case, she didn't comment on that... what her own expressions did comment on however was the clear... thrown moment brought on by the reveal of the woman's tongue. Briefly she wanted to ask a question but realized she didn't really have anything to ask, she was just stunned, but with a quick shake of her head she clearly tried to avoid staring. "Well er... hey, s'long as you enjoy it.~ Don't force yerself though aight? Meant to enjoy this day yerself too.~"
About to move back to the food and make sure it was all set out properly, Mia was halted by Jaz wanting her attention, smirking a little as she realized the kid was nervously offering her a gift. Feeling it in her hand, it had the weight and shape of... a picture maybe? Unless the kid was giving her an ipad or something and it had a hella slim case she couldn't really guess much else, plus it seemed a little slimmer in the middle from how the wrapping paper laid out. "Well whatever you got me kid I'm sure iiiiits..." She hesitated, thinking how to open this with one hand before managing to get her thumb nail under the tape, balancing the edge of it against her stomache as she pulled off the wrapping paper, her words trailing off when she finally got her eyes on the present.
"..."
She just... took a moment. She'd seen Jaz's art before, and... this was it. It was a drawing of the two of them and that was impressive and heartfelt enough for her but... that choice of words. Sister. That hit Mia harder than she was expecting. Her lips parted to say something, her hand bobbing up and down with the picture in it, just... losing a sense of what she should do for a moment. Her grasp on it tightened a moment, not dangerously so, just debating if she even wanted to put it down, before turning to the table she'd laid the food on, pushing a fair chunk of spare space out on the corner so no one could even accidentally bump it over, and propping up the stand of the frame, stepping back from it with a final glance before turning to Jaz.
"Yer gonna regret that. C'mere."
Dropping down to a knee Mia wrapped her good arm around Jaz, tugging her out of her seat just a little and giving her a deep, heartfelt squeeze of a hug, just taking in her partner, her sister, and holding her for a moment, pulling back before it got too embaressing for her, unable to stop smiling.
"Ah fuck kid... couldn't o' saved that till Hachi left huh...?~" She teased playfully shaking her head, helping her notice the calls of two of her guests showing up, her smile only brightening as the vigilantes she and Jaz owed a fair bit to made themselves known. "Oh! Hey guys I... woo. Sorry." She chuckled into her hand, wiping at her eyes. "Sorry, caught me at an emotional moment. All good tears though I promise. It's great you both came." In her current mood she'd greet them each with a brief one armed hug. As much as they were close to strangers she was fucking emotional right now and feeling too good to care. "You really didn't have to bring anythin' but I definitely appreciate it. For sure."
She'd smirk a little at the chibi red horn paper, shaking her head and placing it aside. "I'll open it in a sec, just sorta realin' from the last one." She gestured to her Bee heroine pal. "This is Hachi, colleague of mine. Y'all know Jaz in your own way." She reached back and lightly squeezed Jasmine's shoulder. "Aaaaand its a free for all by now. I made a bunch of barbecue food and there's plenty in the coolers. I might get a nice fire going but for now just try and get comfortable ay?~ I'm sure we're all our own level of awkward here.~"
