"It's almost time, almost time!" Karasu yelled in his ear, it was a luxury for some people that they could not hear his spirit talking in his face or ear or crowing like an idiot. What a blessing it would be not to see the spirits and just not hear Karasu screaming. He was just trying to zone out because he had no idea what Karasu meant. He was in the back, trying to figure out the new order of the books and manga he got before he realized what Karasu meant. The clock inside the back of the store struck six pm. That meant it was time to close the store and to talk to his employee. She had told him before that she couldn't walk alone at night and he respected that, she was a good and hard worker so why not. This meant he would walk her home. "Charlotte?" He still was too formal with her to call her by her nickname. Maybe one day he would try, "Are you done?" He would get out of the back of the store, the room for stock and he would check if the store was empty. There were a few more customers left, he just hoped they wouldn't make it difficult for him to close even if it was temporary so he could walk Charlie home.
He wondered if he wasn't being pushy, he had liked her interview, she fitted so perfectly but she was probably just as shy as he felt. Good god, what was he doing with himself, it was definitely something to be ashamed of. He would just make small talk with the customers, try to help them make a decision or order something for them, that would make it easier to get them out of the store. He would make sure all was handled and twenty minutes past six the store was empty and he quickly closed the door and moved the sign to closed. It was getting late, he should get some food for himself later, maybe he should offer Charlie some as well, would people expect her at home. Maybe he would ask that of her next if he dared to ask such things, he did not want to be considered a bad employer. Shoot, he never asked such things and he never considered this and now he wondered if it was something bad. He was probably overthinking too much.

walk of spirits EVERYTHING WAS SO COMPLICATED with that “hitlist” the villainess Ishtar had published online. Not only had she threatened pro heroes and exceptional U.A. kids alike, but she’d also called-out all of the third years. The prawn doubted that any thugs would have business with a lowly support student like her, but at the behest of the school (and just, you know, out of common courtesy), she advised her boss of this development. About the possibility of having a chaperone that picked her up in the evenings to ensure her safe travel from work to campus in the future, such and such. And then she apologized for the inconvenience.
Something must have been lost in translation, for this led Mamoru to arrange to walk her home. And despite the prawn’s frantic refusal, he seemed set in his decision. The prawn had dusting-off and facing one of the shelves when her boss’s voice stirred her from her thoughts.
“Inukai-san?” the prawn replied in-turn.
Following his question, she turned briefly to face the shelf, which was mostly straightened and admittedly pristine.
“Ah, yes,” Charlotte said hesitantly “With this shelf, anyways. Although I could face a few more shelves if I am quick about it.”
Usually she would stay about a half-hour past closing to help straighten the store while Mamoru (or one of the other part-timers) closed registers. It was a somewhat menial endeavor, but the prawn took pride in it.
She turned expectantly towards her boss, clasping her hands in front of her. The prawn was the image of a good employee, wearing the usual apron over a pair of slacks and a short-sleeved dress shirt. And, of course, her usual surgical mask.
“Is there something else that you would like me to do, sir?”
The prawn tended to be freer with her words, when it came to her boss. At least in terms of “conversations surrounding the job”. Less so with customers or coworkers, where she was more just… quietly helpful and complacent.

The most important part of the store had to be clean. Mamoru really hated dirt, you wouldn't really say he had OCD but he had some tricks that made him distress about dust and dirt that might not even be there and give him ticks that weren't something to be proud of. It helped that he now had people to help him with the shop and he gave a silly thumbs-up to Charlotte. "If you want you can finish that, I will make sure the people in the store know we are closing." In the sense that he would make more time for them to see if he could help them or else request them to come back tomorrow. Might be easier to have a website where they could research a little more what he had and he was still not done with the preparations for that but it was something to consider. He appreciated every one of the part-timers in the shop and was always proud to see how carefully they tended the books, his favourite, in that case, was definitely Charlotte. The others had been all about manga books and surely he appreciated and listened to their input it wasn't the same.
The serious man was simply built that way and he made sure that Charlotte was okay. He had no idea he had misunderstood her and still insisted that he would walk her home because it was but a small thing for him. He lived above the store and had nowhere really else to go. When he was done he would call the girl over again and thanked her for her hard work today. "Do you have everything, let me walk you home. It's not a problem at all." He should maybe get some food, maybe he could do groceries. Even though he knew what the time was, he couldn't help but look on his watch, what time would Hifumi be here today? It varied a lot and yet he wasn't even sure if she would be home soon. He just would see and would now insist on bringing Charlotte home. She would have to guide him, he had no idea where to go even if it might be his second or third time. "Do they wait for you for dinner at home?" He didn't want to be too noisy or curious, but he should maybe change times more efficiently if they did not. He did not want a girl like her to be home too late and be... left out. By the Gods, maybe he was too dramatic about nothing.
He would open the door for Charlotte and would look over his shoulder to give a nod to Karasu who hopped of the cash register and would come with him on his shoulder. Only if you looked very strictly you could see a dent from the little claw in his jacket but nothing else, so easy to have an invisible companion, if only he also couldn't speak sometimes it would work wonders.

WALK OF SPIRITS THE PRAWN GAVE A DUTIFUL NOD as Mamoru insisted that he would make sure the customers cleared-out. Even with the “if you want” attached to the next steps, Charlotte still interpreted his suggestion as a direction. She returned immediately to the shelves, carefully sliding her hands behind books that had been pushed all the way back, bringing them forward so they were all flush with the front edge of the shelf. Prior to taking this position at the bookstore, she hadn’t known that it was common to pull the books forward rather than push them back as far as they could go. It made sense, though—lining the spines of the books along the edge of the shelf meant that the books were more visible to customers.
Charlie went into a sort-of meditative recovering of the shelf, and didn’t really snap-out of it until Inukai-san returned, speaking politely.
“I’d hate to trouble you, Inukai-san,” Charlie said quickly, ever polite. Even if he insisted that it wasn’t a problem, Mamoru Inukai didn’t know how far of a walk it was. And a walk home meant small talk and oh god, Charlotte could fare fine at work-related conversations, but small talk was something entirely else.
And, in regards to his question about whether or not the “people at home” waited for her, for dinner, Charlotte quickly insisted, “No sir. But I live with a bunch of students, like me… so… sometimes we eat at different times. Although… if Saito cooked, he might have made me a plate.”
Saito was nice like that. Or perhaps, Saito hated that Charlie resorted to saltine crackers and peanut butter, when left to her own devices.
Despite the prawn’s protest that she didn’t want to trouble her boss, Mamoru was making the motions to head-out, grabbing his coat to depart. Charlotte ducked behind the register, grabbing her balled-up hoodie and her messenger bag. She wriggled into her coat, and then shrugged the bag onto her shoulder.
“I appreciate it,” the prawn offered, when it was clear she couldn’t shake Mamoru so easily, “I’m sorry to trouble you.”
Then she slipped out the door and into the brisk night air. She’d linger on the sidewalk outside, assuming that Mamoru would lock the door behind the pair of them.
“Do you have anyone at home, Inukai-san?”

The reason why Mamoru asked if the waited for her for dinner was that he did not want to be that person that kept her from hanging out with her family or in her case the other students. So basically he only nodded. Small talk wasn't really his strongest suit. "Thank you for cleaning up the shop again." And do the heavy lifting of most books and such, but yea how to talk about that. He could better ask about things that were close to his heart, was she comfortable in his store and was she doing okay? Hm, he was considering that while closing the store and checking if he put the sign right up, that seemed all fine for now and he made his way over to the girl. Kind of silly, she was probably ten times tougher then he was and he was walking her home because he thought that was her question, it was the least he could do. He did not want his employee to get hurt because it looked like he was lazy or did not care. Besides, now he could get groceries on his way back. "Really no trouble at all, I hope you don't mind me doing this? I realized it's a bit silly. Not much I can do for you in cases of trouble." But it was inspiring that she was a dedicated student and well if the situation in Musutafu was not safe this was everything he could do. He should ask his other employees about it, but he wasn't sure if Poemu and Monty had the same issue, would they else have brought it up? Or he was overthinking. Again.
"Ah, I still live together with my sister. She is a lawyer and works almost twenty-four hours a day, so you could say I live alone." He tried to make a joke, it was very sloppy but he tried, wasn't it the thought that counted. Really very bad at making small talk. "Do you like the store?" Poemu had helped him with the website, Monty got him into Manga, he still hated it but the table in the middle of the store was better than what he had before and it was selling much better, who knew what he could learn from Charlotte, that was an interesting idea, and something to talk about, she, after all, had applied for the job and it had been going really well. He liked her effort and how thoroughly she was in cleaning and keeping the store up to date.

WALK OF SPIRITS THE PRAWN SHRUGGED WHEN THE MAN said it was silly to walk her, a noncommittal sort of gesture. Sure, she understood it—a girl like her should be fully capable of defending themselves if someone attacked her, especially if one was going by appearances alone. But… Charlie was a pacifist. Maybe even a bit of a wuss.
“There’s safety in numbers,” the prawn said placatingly, not wanting to create a false sense of self-sufficience, but also not wanting to contradict the man by revealing how nonviolent she actually was. It wasn’t… necessary information, “At least… it will give my school peace of mind.”
With all these kidnappings and hit-lists or whatever the fuck the Flavor of the Month was in terms of threats against the wellbeing of Third Years.
Mamoru explained that he lived with his sister, who worked as a lawyer and was rarely ever home.
“Hm, sometimes it feels like that, living with classmates with apprenticeships of their own,” Charlotte agreed. Everyone on their own schedule, passing one another like ships in the night, et cetera. In that regards, it could be lonely.
After the prawn’s own apprenticeship had fallen through, she’d sought this job at Mamoru’s bookstore. Even if it wasn’t in the field of technology, it at least gave her a steady stream of income to buy materials in the meantime.
Speaking of the bookstore… Mamoru asked if the prawn liked it. The prawn, who was not an avid reader, by any means—who actually struggled with written Japanese, still, though her speech was improving notably—
“Oh, yes Inukai-san,” the prawn avowed, nodding her head, “It has… personality. And I enjoy working with you, and with Monty and Poemu.”
Monty was downright pleasant to be around, and Poemu… well, Charlotte thoroughly enjoyed messing-with Poemu. Admittedly… the job had just begun as “a part-time job that didn’t demand a whole lot of person-to-person interaction”, so… the pleasant atmosphere was an added bonus.
