Any global city could call itself a melting pot of cultures, and Tokyo was no exception. For its many foreigners, a taste of home was rarely far, and the locals never had to look far to try something new. Thanks to that, and the power of the internet, Emi knew where to find the most American of meals – on the top floor of one of the Garden’s many malls.[break][break]
Fry Guys (or ‘furai guys’, as she had exclaimed over the phone), only served burgers, fries, hot dogs, milkshakes, and unlimited refills on their freestyle sodas. Even with her salt-heavy diet, Emi had avoided the place for years. Greasy burgers would do nothing good for her face, the portions were absurdly large (“People eat all of this? In one go?”), and the restaurant was bustling, loud enough that she began to understand her friend’s lack of volume control.[break][break]
But if it put a smile on her friend’s face, she’d bite. Just the one time.[break][break]
That was how the two had found themselves sitting next to a window overlooking rows of shops, each sitting on their own diner sofa. Between them lay a small mountain of fries, and whatever else the two had ordered for themselves. Emi insisted on treating the relative native to whatever she wanted. She had settled for a spicy bacon cheeseburger, but between marvelling at the size of her milkshake (“This thing’s almost as big as my head…”) and finishing up her story, she’d yet to try it.[break][break]
“-so I climb inside the space locker, and the alien’s walking past, and I’m pretty sure it hasn’t spotted me, but remember, it’s all in VR, so I can hear its every footstep as it passes right in front of me, and my character’s heavy breathing and my heavy breathing, and all of a sudden the thing lunges for me and rips off the locker door!"[break][break]
“So, naturally I flipped my shit and started flailing my arms around IRL, but – I didn’t realise this until I watched the stream after - I made, like, a spike of salt and impaled my headset, so halfway through this alien dude tearing my face off the screen goes black, and I think I was screaming too much to realise right away that that wasn’t meant to happen. The audience found it hilarious, and I guess that’s the most important thing at the end of the day, but I don’t think I’m going to live that one down any time soon.” A light chuckle marked the end of her story, but despite her words, her face didn’t show a hint of embarrassment. When did it ever?

Now of course, for any sportsman worth his salt, a good diet and balance of food was pretty much half the exercise. And Kirk was no different in most cases. With the amount of exercise he did from morning to evening, the fact that U.A cafeterias food was top of its class was definitely a blessing in multiple ways. But of course, one superb meal a day wouldn't keep a guy of his caliber going. He needed more fuel to keep himself going for rest of the day! And unfortunately, most of the places in japan were the sort that sold either noodle soups or rice with fish. Super healthy foods in their own right, but for an american, disappointingly almost like an appetizer.
So of course, when one of your rich friends invited you to eat at supposedly 'an american dream come true', and was supposedly outright ready to pay for the whole thing? SIGN HIM UP!
Now, with a mountain of fries in front of him, the guy placed his own little pile of other food items on his side of the table. Something Kirk could call "The food triangle of fast food!" A double beefed burger with a lot of cheese and jalapenos to keep the want to drown the hotness of your lips under its toasted bread, A fishcake to couple with the pile of chips (that and like he had said before, it was healthy!), big ol pile of nuggets for that extra variety, cheese sticks to make it all stick with flavour, and finally a little bowl of dip to dunk em in, and on top of all of it, a big cup of water and good yogurt to keep it all down safely! Kirk had never exactly been the sort for sweet stuff, but yogurt was a clear exception with how much proteins and calcium it provided... and honestly without it, eating this much things this fast would probably make him puke.
And of course, there was also Emi! The reason why he was here gathering all this extra weight to turn into muscle! As usual, Kirk was listening intently to the story she was telling him, while stuffing his face with food. This time the subject was her playing a VR game to a crowd. Yet again, one of those things properly out of his payment range. So just hearing about this big ol adventure of her trying to hide from an alien, only to end up using her quirk and completely destroying it! "Pfffff, Can't blame ya to be honest! If I had been in a similar situation...!" He stopped for a moment to bite into a cheesestick, and let the cheese reaaaaally stretch out before slurping it in. "I brobableh whouldnth hab a rhoob no mowe!" Just his slamming his pouch against the floor would probably break it, and punching forward would break the computer!
He gave a momentary gulp. "Honestly, I've never gotten to try that stuff myself before, but with how you are putting it, it sounds perfect for hero training stuff! To teach ya to have guts and what not!" That good ol sports instructor side of his mind was immediately making connections to some sort of training. "But I gotta ask, How did ya handle the whole 'falling on your ass in front of the crowd' part? I know if I did something like that during an internship or something, I would probably be blushing to high heaven!" Not that much different to fighting a villain in public in that way. He lifted a nugget, and dunked it into the dip, before lifting it up again. "Heck, during the sports festival, it almost felt like that pro casting it was literally on my ass about all those bridges!" It was still a weak spot for him. But a well timed nugget in the gut softened the blow.

She should have known better than to be surprised by Kirk’s choice. You didn’t get to know a guy for as long as she had without knowing that he knew how to run a bank account. And yet, Mount Murica warranted the occasional raised eyebrow. Eh. If he didn’t call out the salt shaker in her hand, then she wouldn’t voice her thoughts. She did let her feelings on his lack of table manners show on her face, but not too much. It was pretty par for the course with him, after all.[break][break]
“It’s not the best show of a hero-in-training’s self-control… But hey, I’d held it together up until then, when I almost stabbed myself in the face and all.” Her smile remained as she popped a fry into her mouth. The side of the mountain facing her had, naturally, been doused in a layer of salt to keep her fuelled. [break][break]
“VR’s not bad for experiencing new things, no! When you go to big game stores, they have model scenarios to really sell you on the idea. Stuff like balancing on a wooden beam between two skyscrapers. Stuff like that would be really useful for helping students overcome their fear of heights and stuff. But at the same time, we can do that with Ground Alpha and a flying pro. Slightly more traumatizing, but same end result, right?” As always, it was easy for her to be relaxed when neither of them were in danger… But her smile teetered between that and callous. Perhaps her next words would shed light on the matter, once she’d given herself a few seconds to think them through.[break][break]
“You gotta learn to laugh at yourself, if you’re going to put your face out there as much as I do. Or at least learn to take it on the chin, you know? It’s one of the first things you have to learn, if you ask me, and I think a few of the guys at our school could stand to understand it. People on the internet, behind a screen where they don’t have to answer for what they say… They turn into real assholes.” Her smile took a turn for the bittersweet; a quick sip of her milkshake served to mask that. Peanut butter, of course – for the added sodium. Either the taste or a few seconds to calm herself made sure her lips were more genuine when she continued.[break][break]
“I was pretty young when I started showing myself online, but it doesn’t matter how old you are or what you’re doing. Somebody out there will have problems with you and what you’re up to, and they’ll find the worst way to let you know. It’s even worse if you give them a reason to make fun of you… So you don’t.”[break][break]
“That’s my secret, Bluster. Never let them see that you’re hurting.” She pointed a fry at him to punctuate her words; it was slipped into her mouth a moment later. “It’s a lot easier said than done, but when you really get into the swing of it, everybody thinks you’re invincible, and since you think it too, you kind of are!” Even talk of playing the part managed to draw out her signature smile – self-assured, almost to a fault. Still, not a bad trait for a soon-to-be hero to have.[break][break]
“The day that you see me, on camera, looking hurt or tearing up… You’ll know that things are really bad.” With that, she reached for her burger, finally ready to take a bite. Just short of it entering her mouth, she stopped. Her brow knitted, she lowered it, and gave the boy a confused stare. “Anyway, I don’t know what you’re talking about!” Her voice, a little louder than before, almost sounded offended. “Mister Third-Best-Student, asking me for advice?” A melodramatic scoff summed up her feelings on the matter. "I've got half a mind to turn the tables on you." Before she could say something she’d come to regret, she allowed herself a taste of the burger. Just like that, her face turned its shock and surprise from the boy to her meal. It packed so much flavour! So much food stuffed between two buns! It was as if the flavour had a life of its own! It was-[break][break]
“Not bad,” she muttered.

Kirk had grabbed his burger and taken a big bite out of it, as Emi proceeded to color his suggestion with all these great examples. Emi had always been the critical sort, so whenever she saw an idea as good, or outright useable, there was a certain sense of pride behind it! Kirk excitedly nodded along whilst chewing, although eventually she brought up a pretty good reason for it not being that great. Kirk raised an eyebrow as his head fell towards his shoulder in sort of an agreement, as he gulped. "I mean, yeah! Nothing can really prepare you perfectly for doing things, than ACTUALLY doing the thing after all." He scratched his brow before his hands reached out for the fries again, dunking them in the dip. "Like, you ain't gonna feel the wind pushing ya whilst you are inside some place with goggles on... UNLESS you put a fan or something in the same room!" Seemed like a smart conclusion to him! "Although I guess some other stuff would be way harder to simulate..."
In the case of her advice on handling the more awkward moments, she suggested laughing at them. Just nodding along, and accepting that it happened! And yeah, in that regard it did hit the note. "I can get that! Kind of like you know, joking with the bros I guess! Just a bit more to laugh with them!" However, when she brought up that folks on the internet were gonna be even worse, Kirk took a bite of the fishcake, eating it a bit quicker. "That's sort of the stuff I'm worried about, you know! Folks you don't necessarily know ain't your bros! They might talk bad about me for that sort of thing, if I keep doing it!" One of those awkward things that kept showing up. He really didn't want to make the wrong impression. Being a hero, being known as 'accidentally destructive' wasn't gonna be good. Especially when bloated by folks who wanted to just be mean.
Now admittedly, Emi did have the advantage on this front. Pure unadulterated experience! It was hard to beat that, that was for sure. Another bite of the burger followed. All this talk about not showing emotions was really making him get the munchies. Another gulp. "Easy with experience I guess. Just not like that in sports, you know! Gotta be ready to generate that hype for folks to cheer for ya and what not, and it's really hard to be genuine, if you ain't feeling it!" Admittedly, her words made him wonder if she had a point. Was his hype the thing that made people make fun of him? Nah, it was the thing that got people jumping! But, on the other hand... He did like the sound of making yourself invincible simply by laughing at the mistakes and still just keeping on going! "You can really sell a guy on an idea, you know!" He pointed at her, almost like his finger was nodding in agreement, before taking a sip of water... all that salt was really drying up his tongue!
However, the mood changed quite suddenly. She outright asked why he would need his help? Kirk just lifted his eyebrow in the middle of all of his munching, and blinked. He had not expected that! However, with her taking a bite of the burger, and actually looking quite lively for a second, Kirk let it slide. Maybe he had just said something awkward in the question. "Eh, That's how bros develop, you know! One of us knows something better than the other, so they can teach them about how that works, and then the other teaches what they know to the other!" Yet another benefit of being friends with folks! Kirks wide smile was back in full force!
"Though I do have to admit, I dunno how I am gonna be repaying a full course meal THIS good!" He momentarily licked his fingers, as he proceeded to grab some cheese sticks again, letting their cheesy goodness linger in the air! "Could always give ya some voice training for victory chants for those streamer pals of yours, you know! Ain't nobody hitting the sound barrier like me!" He slowly lowered the cheese into his mouth, taking 100% of the flavour in before a satisfied "MMMMMMMMMMHM!"

Their school had a knack for trials by fire. What better way to learn combat than to try taking down a hero better than you? How will you know you’ve mastered fire safety without being dropped in the middle of an inferno at least once? It was no surprise that the students left in their year favoured – or rather, had learned to favour – the full experience. That, and they tended to make for the best stories.[break][break]
Still, a VR room wasn’t a half bad idea for training. She’d have to write that one down.[break][break]
On to more pertinent matters, such as herself and her persona. She’d managed to get half her point across, but then her friend trailed off into cheering and-[break] Right. It was Kirk. Sport analogies always won out with him.[break] She cocked a smirk at his quirk. She used the fry in her hand to draw small circles in the air, while she tried to figure out how she’d explain on his terms. “It’s like… When you’re watching baseball. No, wrestling’s probably better for this. When you’re not playing on a team, you’ve got a lot more time to let yourself shine. That’s the big thing with wrestling, right? I’m not an expert- it never really appealed to me- but it seems like the biggest guys in wrestling are all playing up characters, right? It’s not just their skill they’re showing off, it’s their personality. And sure, if you want that personality to be a guy that looks sad and beats themselves up when they mess up, you can do that. Some people might even like it. But-“[break][break]
She paused to take another bite out of her burger. Not because the oversized grease ball was good. No, of course not. She was just giving Kirk a few moments to process her words. Her smile? Irrelevant. “I don’t think that’ll go down well for pro-heroes. At least, not the kind of pro you’re trying to be. Big giant beacon of strength like you shouldn’t be wasting time being seen moping about what went wrong, right? Like, you’re allowed to say that you made a mistake, but if you want people to look up to you all the time, you can’t let them get you down too much.”[break][break]
“There’s an ancient proverb passed through the generations: don’t feed the trolls. You never feed the trolls. There will always be somebody out there trying to bring you down, and you’ll never get rid of all of them. But as long as you don’t take the bait and don’t let them get to you, you’ll at least keep their numbers down. Once you show them that their words get to you, it’ll only get worse. I’ve learned that lesson the hard way so you don’t have to.” No doubt, there was a story or seventeen behind those words, but judging by the girl’s preoccupation with her milkshake, it would be told another time. [break][break]
“Anyway. Sports. So if you’re a pro-hero, the people of Japan are like your audience, right? And eventually you want parts of the audience to be your fans, and to do that, you need to look like a cool guy to hang out with. And, if I may say so myself, you are a pretty cool guy to hang out with, so you can roll with that. After all, people like you for who you are, don't they?"[break][break]
"There’s a whole thing on it online – parasocial relationships -, but the gist of it is that if you act like their bro enough, they’ll believe it even if you’ve never met them. Like, don’t you have a sports legend you’d just love to be sitting at this table, talking about nothing with? Even though you don’t know much about them personally? The human mind’s a weird thing.” Not that she was complaining. It was those same mind tricks that helped make streamers famous, and she wasn’t innocent when it came to making the most of them.[break][break]
It was always great to be told that her words reached a friend, and Emi was happy to revel in it. A self-assured smile and a raise of her eyebrows said what words wouldn’t – ‘Yeah, I know.’ Something about his response to her outburst caught her off-guard; the mild surprise showed on her face and in her sudden pause. It wasn’t how well he took it – no, that was classic Kirk – but how little he seemed to worry about asking for aid. Too late, she realised that her pride had gotten the best of her again. There she was, scheming ways to shift the conversation to what ate at her mind, only for her friend to prove once again that his simple option was the best one. All she had to do was ask.[break][break]
But asking meant being open, and honest, and maybe a little vulnerable, and she had just told him how important it was to never show weakness. What little of a smile remained on her face, replaced with a contemplative frown. If there was anybody she was going to trust with her thoughts, then it had to be her friend, right? But if he thought her words were stupid or silly-[break][break] He wouldn’t. He never had.[break] But she’d test the waters to be safe.[break][break]
Emi closed her eyes and took a deep breath in. She was being ridiculous, and she knew it, but that didn’t help her to feel at ease. “I think I’m good with my voice, buddy. I’m not gonna get any more fans by deafening them.” Half a smile forced itself onto her face. “But I think there is… something else you could help me with.” Her head had cocked down a little – not nearly enough to break eye contact, but the tilt was a slight yet stark shift from the Emi she chose to show the world. That, and she'd long since stopped touching her food, preoccupied with whatever weighed on her mind.

As Emi changed her tactic on explaining to Kirk what she was getting at, it atleast seemed to be working. Wrestling had never exactly been a big sport for him, but it was certainly one for Darren, him being a bit more of a martial arts nut. And of course, just thinking about all the masked wrestlers with all sorts of weird names had Kirk rub his chin with very excited nodding. It was all about that heroic persona you wanted to show off! However, her even implying that he wanted his persona to be the sort to cry, made Kirk feel a bit insulted. "Oh come on! Just cause I feel bad about it doesn't mean I feel bad all the time! ...right?" Admittedly, Emi knew these things better. Maybe the internet just generalized things really easily.
He scratched his head, as Emi continued explaining. Admittedly, it solidified the problem in Kirks head a little: "I guess I am just a bit too honest about things I do most of the time. No need to usually hold back on em, and what not." Good things usually came in spurts when you were excited! But when you were grumpy, the things could pile up as well. However, in the end, her advice was just to 'not feed the trolls'. "So what you're saying is not to take what the crowd is shouting in the middle of a match seriously?" Maybe an overt generalization on his part. After all, cheering crowd was the best sort of fuel to keep on going during big events! "I guess I gotta find some way to say my annoyances and frustrations in a way that ain't exactly usable by others..." Of course he could use sillier profanities but... That would probably make him look sillier in folks eyes!
However, it almost felt like he was really talking to some sort of an agent helping him groom his image to what he wanted. She had always been more savvy of the duo on these things of course, but just this whole self marketing thing was hitting some curious notes to him! Although part of it was also her just directly saying that he was clearly 'a cool dude' to work with. Simple praises like that had always been his weakness. Admittedly, the whole science behind it, this whole 'paracetamol-relationship', did go over his head namevise, but the gist behind it did hit some notes. "I mean, that doesn't sound too hard! If you're saying that to look like a good bro and get good bros without needing to meet em, is to ACT like a total bro... I think I've got that thing completely covered!" He just had to keep that image going, no matter what, and not stop to get moody about it in the middle!
although of course... "I don't think an interviewer would accept me doing a broheadlock on em though. Guess you just gotta choose your targets well on who can handle that stuff and who can't right?" A question perhaps a little bit on the sillier side, but important in it's own right!
For a few moments, Kirk once again concentrated on his food. With his fishcake now finished, he took another bite of the burger, and after that, dunked fries into the dip, and just took a moment to feel the flavour... however, the way Emi was looking at him had him a bit confused again. Was the food just not hitting her tastebuds as well as they were hitting his? Soon enough, Emis weird side eyed look towards him was met with her saying she had something he could help with. Kirk gulped, and just gave his trademark smile. "Naturally! if you've got anything, shoot it!" He even stopped eating for a bit. Requests like this were of utmost importance, especially when the person sitting in front of you had given you quite a lot to work with already!

A hint of offense in his voice prompted a raised eyebrow from Emi – the kind that pointed out that he was doing the exact thing they were trying to avoid. “Right. But it’s really easy for people that don’t really know you to emphasize parts of you in their head, if they stand out. So, if we can help it, let’s try not to give them that chance.” A small smile completed her point, and hopefully helped to ensure he knew she meant well.[break][break]
“Maybe you might need to be a slightly… tamer bro, to start off with. No headlocking strangers right off the bat and all that. Most people won’t appreciate that, but it is a way to leave an impression. Give it some time, maybe. You’ll get a hang for these things the more you do it – trust me.” It was hard for her to miss the irony in her predicament. How had she ended up offering advice on how to be more liked to another person? [break][break]
She fell silent. His words weren’t lost on her. If anything, they helped to calm her nerves a little. Even if she knew her pride was working against her, it didn’t make it much easier for her to move past it. Perhaps, instead of defeating it, she could continue to put her faith in the boy.[break][break]
The result… wasn’t the best look for Emi. Not in her eyes, at least. She much preferred to be the poster girl for self-confidence, not a teen suddenly struggling to meet the eyes of her friend; a girl with thoughts to share, but stuck with a mouth that wouldn’t voice them. Irritation flickered onto her face. Not at him, of course, but she worked hard to make sure the world knew she was stronger than what she was in that moment.[break] People lived like that, every day. Meek, indecisive, and weak. God, she hated it.[break] So she needed to get it over with.[break][break]
Eyes closed. Deep breath. Hesitant words began to explain her act:[break] “You’ve been having trouble getting people you don’t know to like you. I’ve been…” A hand on the table clenched into a fist. For a moment, she seemed set to stop herself, brush the whole thing off as a weird episode. Determination won out, and she continued. Not easily, judging by how strained the next word was, and how eager she was to look anywhere except at him.[break][break]
“-Struggling, with getting the people I do know to… think I’m good? As a student, I mean. I guess as a friend as well… But one thing at a time, maybe. Forget I mentioned that part.” A light shake of the head helped her to keep her thoughts in order. “I mean, this is our third year. The last year of school any of us will ever have, and it’s like… I haven’t done enough. I hoped that I had-” The words went from slipping out to spilling out. Her other hand pressed itself against the table.[break][break]
“But then I look at all of you guys, cleaning up in the Festivals, having the entire school vote you as one of the best we have, picking up sponsors from huge companies, and meanwhile I’m… just a third-year. I know-“ She’s quick to cover up her defences. “I know it’s stupid. I already told myself that. But it doesn’t stop me thinking about how we’re all going to be graduating in a few months, and I’m going to come out of that as… nothing special. I didn’t spend one-sixth of my life on this to be remembered as ‘average’.” Finally, she came to take a breath. Somewhere in her speech, she had remembered to meet his eyes, but it had little to do with her usual confidence. She had conviction, at least, in her final words and how frustrated they left her feeling.[break][break]
“I have to do better. I need to. And I don’t know how.”

So he shouldn't even give em a chance to dislike em, huh? Of course, in Kirk terms, that meant being even more excited and bolsterous! But the way Emi thought about, she suggested calming down a bit. With an example that Kirk couldn't help but shrug at. "Yeaaaah, makes sense." He rubbed his head a little, giving a brief thought on it, as she suggested for him to just 'give it some time'. "Admittedly, I could go more the good coach angle! Just giving out all these tips to folks, and always giving thumbs up!" One of his sources of the overall bro-attitude he had when he was a kid. Admittedly, that sort of image overall seemed a lot more inviting! Besides, once those guys knew a student well enough, they could pretty much keep that fire lit under them and keep em going. Certainly seemed like a good way to go about it.
But overall, the conversations priority had at this point switched towards Emi. He took this moment as a chance to drink a little, as Emi visibly was having trouble saying what she wanted. As she just outright said his issue outloud, Kirk nodded. "Yeah?" It was sort of weird to see her like this. It was like she was sitting on a hot seat, and couldn't really keep her head still. His eyes widened however for the next sentence she barely got out. "Huh?" It outright surprised him. Hearing that she wasn't exactly doing that well in school. That and hearing a bro say that they had trouble making friends was always a bit of a red flag, but when the bro themselves wanted to concentrate on something else, Kirk couldn't do much but shrug for now. "Alright, Keep going though!" Kirk knew this whole thing she had going: If you stopped right at the edge before jumping into a pool, you would be never jumping. You had to keep the momentum going!
Kirk had to admit, that just imagining how fast the three years had gone by, Emis panic was sort of relatable. The way she talked about had his mind immediately going into what he himself had been doing... well, been very successful at sports festivals atleast! Those made him stand out very well amongst quirkers with big ol fancy quirks! And yeah, folks genuinely liked him! After that second year, Kirk was relieved to have kept his third spot in those rankings! But Emi? Sadly, as much as Kirk wanted to say something stand out about her as a student... most of the stuff he thought about had happened in the first year. She had not exactly done that much big stuff in a while. And heck, he hadn't heard about her results at the sports festival either. And Kirk had a feeling, if she had done well, she would have been atleast a little bit louder about it...
However, he did know how to react to couple of things. "I mean, it ain't stupid, if it actually worries ya!" His hand holding the water cup extended an index finger to point at her. "If it hits your morale to do things, it's gonna be an awkward slope and what not. Gotta try and fix it somehow, you know!" He leaned his back against his chair as he looked up towards the roof. "That and of course, it ain't just a few months!" He leaned back forward, like he had finished thinking. "It's over half a school year still! Plenty of time to do something to stand out!"
He smiled a bit. "You know, in sports...!" Probably a sentence starter his friends had heard one time too many. "the last sprint is probably the most important part of any competition! You push your muscles and effort to their limit to make it over the goal before others, and what happens after, you leave to that!" Classic case of not giving up until it's over. "In that regard, this is the BEST moment to push yourself forward immensely! If you do something absolutely amazing, somebody is bound to take notice when its combined with the graduate, you know what I mean?" Kind of like in commercials. Piling up good sounding words made the end result seem a lot better!
"I guess the big question is just HOW'd you like to do it? I know you've got a way with words, that's for sure!" He lifted his burger and took a bite. Perfect time for Emi to chime in herself.

[nospaces] [attr="class","wassup1dangerhead"] [attr="class","wassup1dangerbody"] [attr="class","wassup1dangericon"] [attr="class","wassup1dangertxt"] As it happened, doing next to nothing was one of the best things he could have done. Even after their discussion had come to an end, Emi wouldn’t know how to describe to somebody the relief that came from being listened to. A strange sentiment from somebody that had almost made a career out of talking into a webcam, but much to the girl’s chagrin, it wasn’t the same. A thousand emotes from names she would never match faces to could hardly compare to one, two, or a few friends she knew, hearing her honest feelings and taking them seriously. [break][break]
He had a point. A lot of good points, actually. About not brushing off her own worries – a pre-emptive defence, just in case he’d thought them silly too. Why had she thought that he would? Then there was the time they had to work with – half a year and change. She’d knew better than most what could be accomplished in that time, so why had she been stressing so much? Doubt and dismay had eaten away at what should have been an endless font of confidence, and that was where her foolishness lay. It just took another person’s words for her to realise it.[break][break]
And so Emi smiled. It was weak, far from complete, but it was tangible proof that he’d managed to ease her woes some. An obligatory sports analogy helped to ease the tension too. As silly as it sounded, he wasn’t exactly wrong. Most top athletes didn’t fall into the back lines halfway through their race… But hey, the best time to start planting a tree was a year ago. The second-best time was right there, right now.[break][break]
The girl sighed, and with it a little more of her nerves seemed to disperse in the air. She wasn’t trying to bore holes into the table with her fingers, for one, and she seemed a little more eager to look her friend in the eye. “Well when you say it like that, it sounds so simple.” A hollow, single laugh escaped her. “You’re not wrong though. Probably. I’ve got time. I know that now, I just… let myself panic about it. Needed a friend to bring me back down to Earth.” She allowed herself a few seconds to mull her thoughts over… Long enough for her to remember her drink! And food! She was supposed to be eating a meal, and it was getting colder by the second![break][break]
“I dunno, man. If I knew what people wanted to see from me, I wouldn’t be driving myself up the wall about this. Isn’t this supposed to be the stuff you’re good at?” The polls didn’t lie, after all. “I already spend most of my day either in class, training or working on my web stuff. Part of me thinks I’m going to have to drop it soon anyway. There’s no way I could be a pro hero playing Drop Boys on the side, right?” It was a part of her life she wasn’t so eager to get rid of, judging by her tone of voice. “Besides, I need that time to start doing business. Trying to see if I can’t get a company to start making Halo merch… Not that that matters if I’m not a stand-out pro. And that doesn’t help me much now anyway.” Her palm rested itself on her cheek, while her other hand helped itself to a French fry. [break][break]
“So until then, I need people to see me as a hero-to-be worth watching, or at least the students… But we aren’t allowed to do hero stuff unless we’re on internships, and then what am I going to do? Set up crimes for me to stop in front of a camera?” A slow shake of her head saved Kirk the trouble of shutting her down. “I guess I could stand to do more about the school. Talk to more of the students or something, and not just in the chatrooms. Try to be more than ‘that girl with the camera’, if that’s still an option…” There she was, muttering and slipping her way back into darker trains of thought. The fry went uneaten, slowly drooping back towards the table as she went on. Perhaps it was telling of how much time she’d spent talking to herself, seeing how easily she trailed off into a one-man conversation.

It did seem like Kirks words were making an actual impact. The girls impression got visibly a little bit lighter, and it atleast didn't look like she was ready to punch the table anymore! However, despite it, it was clear he hadn't exactly made the worries completely disappear. The girl was still sighing and barely looking at him. But with a mark made, he did feel like he was able to say more things. "Yeah, it's not like trying your hardest is THAT hard! Gotta just put your all into it, whatever that is for ya!" For Kirk, it was of course the whole physical deal of things! Making his muscles almost burst like bubbles, and his brain fill with adrenaline to get in range for pounding someone in the face!
It was very interesting how much Emi had to say about his situation and how he could better himself, but when it came to herself, the story was completely different. Her outright saying he should be good at this stuff had him scratching his head. It was kind of hard to point anything out, when most of that sort of thing came from just how he was: Loud and bolsterous! "I mean, I guess most of those votes came from the fact that I am a bro with a LOT of people! Nothing makes you more popular than, you know... Being friends with a lot of folks!" Admittedly, saying it like that was blunt, but the moment he thought about it more, it did feel perhaps a little bit ballsy to say. "That and when I enter the room, ain't nobody ignoring me with how loud I am! I just stand out of the crowd with the volume!" Unfortunately that was a problem overall, when the example was you yourself. He hoped Emi would understand that.
However, her bringing up dropping her hobby had Kirk with a little bit more sure things to say, without fearing that awkwardness! "Come on, bro! You are looking at the definition of 'Hobby made hero' here!" He outright spread his arms out to emphasize! The guy was literally embodiment of sports: He did sports, He fought with sports, he breathed sports and he sported... uh... sports! "That and if it puts you in front of the crowd just like heroism would, you'd think there's some clear line from that to heroism!" Although how excited he was about the idea itself... "...But how though?" His hand escaped to his jaw almost immediately in a thinking pose, as he sipped some water. Maybe he had gotten a bit too excited again? Besides, Emi knew more how the whole 'streaming' thing worked...
Merchandising had not been that big of a thing for Kirk. Of course he had had those 'BIG THINK' moments, where he had considered getting some sort of sports company to sponsor him, leading into free stuff for him to use, but other than that, he wasn't exactly a marketing giant. You needed money for that after all. For a moment he grabbed a handful of fries and munched away.
However, once she started speaking about being the 'girl with the camera', and about how she should be getting out of chat rooms and get to know actual people. And that was the point Kirk his fist into his open hand like a gavel! "That's it! The hero with the camera!" He took a nugget in one hand, and a bunch of fries in the other. "If I got it right, you got a pretty big fandom on the interwebs, right?! Couldn't ya just stream to those folks your heroic antics?!" He waved the fries like in front of a nugget camera. "I mean, you would probably need to ask permission from the hero you are working with of course during an internship or something, but it's an option! That or you could stream to the other students in the school! Would get you attention certainly!" Of course, this was a pretty naive way to look at it perhaps, but you couldn't blame the guy for trying!
However, perhaps he had jumped the gun a bit. after all she wanted to DROP being the girl with the camera. "In that regard, uh..." He leaned into the chair a bit with, with the fries and nugget still in hand. "Maybe you could try doing this stuff with other people? I got my best bros out of doing sports with people after all. Like you!" Admittedly, that was sort of an obvious answer. He scarfed down his meal, and proceeded to finish off his burger, licking his fingers afterwards.

Nobody had ever called Kirk eloquent, but he’d done a good job of showing that occasionally, the answer didn’t need to be told with word wizardry. So what had her eyes darting about this time? Not out of a lack of confidence, but to search for the answer, as if she could see it manifesting if she just looked hard enough.[break][break]
It wasn’t until her friend showed self-awareness that she seemed to find it. Her lips curled upwards. It wasn’t a grin – far from it -, but the kind of smile that welcome a long-lost friend, or perhaps a lost truth. Her epiphany was so obvious, it made her want to kick herself, and yet she didn’t feel the need to scream it out loud.[break][break]
Kirk was able to finish without interruption, even if she looked very ready to share her conclusion before he’d made it halfway. “You hit the nail on the head there, Bluster… And I feel like an idiot for having to wait until you said it. You are loud. That’s the first thing anybody ever says about you.” A finger tapped twice against the table, as if to make a point of those words in her head.[break][break]
“And it works. It’s one thing to do good and heroic things, but if nobody’s watching- I mean, I’m not saying nothing’s worth doing if nobody sees it, but if you’re trying to stand out, announcing what you’re doing to everybody sure as hell helps. You don’t even think about doing it – you just do. There’s the trick.”[break][break]
She extended an accusing finger towards him as she went on. “Whatever you’re doing, make it loud. That’s part of how to become a top student.” The hand came to rest at her side shortly after, but the energy it held was just as present in her eyes. She’d found her fire again, and she was all too eager to share.[break][break]
“Being loud isn’t hard with a camera, if you know how. And I do know how. I’ve just been slacking on it. I need to get off my ass. Less whining, more doing something about it. Geez… I really let myself slack on that.” Emi fell back into her oversized seat, letting out a sigh that seemed to take most of her troubles with it. There she lay, staring at the ceiling for a good five seconds, before-[break][break]
“This. Was a good talk. And good food, I guess.” It would likely be the only time he’d hear her admit to anything so greasy being edible, so he’d have to savour it. “But mostly the talk. It really helps to hear the right words from a friend, you know? I’d be stuck running circles in my head for weeks if it wasn’t for you."[break][break]
Finally, she remembered to eat a little. She made no effort to hide a relieved smile as she enjoyed her burger, and after a few seconds to clear her mouth, she continued. “I’ll need to figure out the details still, but I’ve got a strength there, and not trying to play to it would be idiotic. It’d be like asking you to be quiet. Not that people haven’t tried, but still.” Her joke managed to get a few laughs out of her before she went on. “I guess what I’m trying to say is… Thanks, Kirk. You really helped me get out of my funk. Dunno what I’d have done without you, and all that.”[break][break]
She did her best to avoid the ‘sappy talk’. If anybody asked her, she’d claim that it had everything to do with keeping up a reputation, and vehemently deny a lack of experience in being open with others. One of the many downsides of spending years talking at a screen. Saying anything at all had been a struggle, and it showed, but with the right person and the right words, she was one step closer to realising talking about herself – beyond what she wanted the cameras to know – didn’t have to be the end of the world.

Surprisingly, Emi didn't interrupt him at all, as he gave these ideas. He had almost expected something a little bit annoyed about the whole 'just make a lot of bros' part. Instead, she proceeded to talk right after he finished, and proceeded to say how he had hit the nail on the head. "I did?" And then she proceeded to say it outloud. Ironically, because the answer was indeed how loud he always was. For a moment Scratched his head while munching. The way how she could dissect such a simple thing to almost science was impressive in and of itself! Of course, Kirk himself felt like perhaps there was a little more to it, but in the end, Emi came to a pretty good conclusion! She had to DO something about it! "Yeah! That's it!" He gave a simple cheer to that.
After Emi rose back up, Kirk gave a nod at all the thanks. "No problemo, bro! Like I said, sometimes a bro knows something you don't consider!" Even if the loudness wasn't his primary idea, if it helped her, that was the important part! "That and of course, if you need my help with being loud, I guess you could consider me the expert, hehe!" With that, Kirk once again started eating, as different singular pieces entered his gullet. And when all of that food was finished, and he opened the yogurt, and scooped the first spoonful into his mouth, there was only a single simple thought in his mind:
'Job well done', both in meal consumption and in being a bro in need!
