Meara was walking through the mostly empty halls of UA. It was extremely quiet right now, most of the student population was gone for the summer break and most of the teachers were either busy planning out the next semester or resuming their hero work. But thankfully for her a certain gear head was still around, tinkering in the robotics lab. Said Gear head was Yojin, he was quite possibly the best engineering student in the school, staff included. But more importantly for Meara, he was also great at keeping secrets if the situation called for it. And what she had for him today was definitely something that needed to be kept on the down low. Ever since she could remember, Meara had a familiar voice in her head. It wasn’t anything that she made a fuss about, since the AI seemed to only tell her when her nanites weren’t acting right, when she was able to use new abilities, and give her general vitals. Meara always believed that she was just a way for her nanites to more easily communicate with her. So she never really mentioned it to anyone. But in the past six months, something new had invaded her subconscious.
It was a new voice in her head, except this one was more; aggressive. And it seemed to manifest itself whenever she was in a fight. At first she made no note of it, but then after she lost in the first round of the Sports Festival and ended up fighting Jace in the Loser’s bracket she began to feel its presence more. It pushed her into lashing out at the poor boy and saying incredibly hostile and vile things to him. It manifested itself again when they fought in the bridge finale but she was so tired and beat up at that point it wasn’t around for long. But then something concerning happened. While she was being held by Ishtar It spoke to her for the first time. It demanded that Meara let it take control with the promise that it would protect her and help her not let anyone do that to her again. Meara was able to push it back down deeper into her subconscious once more, but it kept pulling at her, telling her that it would be waiting for her to accept the offer.
That’s what led her here to Yojin, he was the only one that she could think of that she trusted to help her figure out what the hell this thing was. And maybe help her to answer some questions on the nature of her quirk. Meara had no idea if this was even real or just the result of trauma from being attacked and kidnapped for a week. Though considering the other nicer voice in her head she fully believed that it was indeed real. After another moment she made it to the Robotics Shop and opened the door. The large room was littered with all kinds of mechanical equipment and half finished gear. “Oi Yojin! You in here mate?” She called out. She didn’t see him anywhere but he had messaged her that he was going to be in here at this time. “Come on Mate you said you’d be in here! Don’t make me walk around here! I don't want to step on a bloody boobytrap or something!” She called out again. Last thing she wanted to do was either break something or piss off one of his damn roombas by stepping on it.

Yojin jolted awake, blinking blearily and trying to focus on something familiar to help cut through the fog in his brain. His eyes were burning, even though the sunlight filtering through the window said it was late afternoon. He could tell he was sitting? He’d fallen asleep at his desk?
He rubbed his eyes with his hands, suddenly realizing he’d probably fallen asleep with his contacts on. That’d explain the searing eye-pain, then. Too many late nights, fighting zombies and helping the friendly local Yakuza. Then, suddenly, he felt his heart begin to race, clammy sweat breaking out on his hands.
Something had woken him up. Someone behind him. A voice.
“Second!” He muttered, stumbling to his feet. Pins and needles opened fire up and down his back and legs, reminding him that face-down at his computer probably wasn’t the best place to catch a nap. Yeah. He was in UA. In the machine shop. He recognized it now--the quiet drone of the 3D printer was unmistakable, at least to him. If he had to describe it, he’d have said it sounded like a dire photocopier.
He bent down, feeling for his backpack, eyes still blurry at all hell, feeling stupidly helpless and paranoid at being caught off guard. Maybe this was technically one of the safest places he could have accidentally fallen asleep, but still…
Heart pounding, hands shaking.
“Knees weak, mom’s spaghetti?” His brain helpfully finished.
Yojin resisted the urge to snort in amusement as he pulled out his glasses case, and started to take out his contacts. Both because he might accidentally poke his eye out, and because he didn’t want to look like a maniac in front of…
Who was here?
Yojin forced his sludgy brain to churn, trying to remember who he’d promised to help with a tech problem today. Caleb? No. Girl’s voice. Angie? They met in the library. Um…
Meara. Meara was having. Trouble.
“Come in, sit down, I’ll be done in a second!” He said loudly, waving in the general direction of the door, trying to sound like he hadn’t almost jumped out of his skin because he’d hear someone’s voice. “Sorry about that--I...lost track of time.”
Meara was having a great deal of trouble.
Yojin winced as his hand joltied involuntarily, and he jabbed his bandaged index finger into his eye. He took a deep breath, then tried again, pulling out the second contact and tossing them both back in the cleaning fluid, and put on his glasses, mumbling curses under his breath as his eye began to water. Well. Water more. They were already pretty angry at him for wearing his contacts too long.
Anyway, Meara had been a goddamn wreck since the Fuchu riots. Maybe longer. Some villain attack had fucked her up bad, and Yojin got to enjoy front row seats as his classmate and friend feel apart, and he tried to patch holes in a sinking ship with illegal cigarettes and pot.
It was a rough deal, all things considered.
She’d also vanished recently, scaring the shit out the profs. Yojin didn’t know why she’d vanished--at first, he’d assumed she’d dropped out, as so many of his grade had. He can’t say he’d have blamed her.
But here she was, back, and maybe only a little worse for the wear. Hell. Maybe even better.
Yojin adjusted his glasses, running his hands through his hair--which was even messier than usual, given he’d been sleeping on it, took a swing of the half-empty, warm can of energy drink sitting next to his computer, then cracked his knuckles, stepping over to Meara.
Whatever. She deserves the best I can do.
“Hey. Sorry again.” He said, sheepish smile on his face. His eyes were red and bleary, and he was still groggy, but dammit, he was gonna do his best here. Something about her quirk was bugging her, and even if Angie, Elise, or Nimue was the better doctor, no one was a better engineer than Hino Yojin. “Why don’t you catch me up, and I’ll decide which toys I get to play with today? All in capacity as hero support, of course.”

Meara sat in a chair next to the table where Yojin was and sat down. “It’s a long story mate so I hope yer more awake than you look.” She said as she reclined back. She could tell by the bags under his eyes that he had just woken up, was probably up all night working on some contraption. “But before we begin I think I owe you something.” She said as she dug into her coat pocket. A second later she tossed the young engineer a pack of cigarettes. “I owe you a few of those mate. And I really appreciate you helping me out with those, they helped me to fight the shite off better.” She said as she pulled out a lighter. It was one of the flip lighters and she began to play with it, absentmindedly flipping it open and closed. “And before you ask how I got those, I’m a pretty young lass. It’s easy to get some bloke to buy me stuff if needed.” She said with a shrug. Granted she was doing that a lot lately but she didn’t want to always have to go to him if she needed some, so she found a way to get them herself.
Meara looked back at him and sighed as she flipped her lighter closed. “So before I go into the reasons I came here for your help I guess I should fill you in on how my quirk works on a base level.” She said as she put the lighter away. “So I’m essence my body produces countless numbers of little robots I call Nanites. They kinda take the place of my red and white blood cells. Granted I still have normal blood still, it’s just some of it is made up instead of these little buggers. Anyways so they live inside me just like a cell. And they react in certain ways and can manifest into a lot of different things like my suit and it’s different functions. But they’re not just mindless bots, they react to my surroundings and sometimes on their own. Especially when I’m upset or feel threatened they get almost excited and can randomly manifest my suit or weapons.” She said before taking in a breath. “For example they tend to not let me hurt myself.” She said as she grabbed an exacto knife and went to stab her arm. But a split moment before the blade made contact armor suddenly appeared and blocked the blade. “Like that.” She said with a smile. “I also have this lil AI like voice in my head that gives me data about how my quirk is working or where I have been injured.” She said as she tapped her head. “She’s harmless and doesn’t pop up unless I’m actively using my quirk.” She continued
Meara’s eyes suddenly dropped and her face dropped a bit. “However, recently a new voice has been speaking to me.” She said, her tone showing her concern. “He's different. More aggressive, and it may just be me going insane but he seems to get me to act off of my more, angry and aggressive tendencies.” She said with a pained look on her face. “Normally I would just chalk it up to me going insane from all the bullshite I just went through. But after thing on it more, I can almost for sure say that he’s been here for a long, long time. Maybe the whole time I’ve had this quirk.” She said as her fists tightened. “But ever since the first round of the sports festival I’ve been feeling his influence on me. The fight with Jace being the prime example. I said and did some awful things to him. Things I wish I didn’t and didn’t know why I did up until now.” She said quietly. “Now after the whole kidnapping ordeal he’s been basically screaming at me every chance he gets. Telling me to let go so he can ‘protect me from feeling bad ever again.” She said as she looked away, tears forming in her eyes. “I don’t know what to do Yojin…. I can’t sleep because if I’m not having dreams of the kidnapping, I’m hearing his fucking voice tell me to give in.” She said as she looked at him. “I know it’s a long shot Yojin. But do you think that you can somehow look at my Nanites and see if you can find some subroutine or program that can slow me to at least drown him out?” She almost pleaded. “Cause I’m a hair away from having a mental break.” She said as she wiped the stray tears away. Meara had her doubts if he could help her, or if there was any way to help her. But if there was, Yojin was probably her best bet to find the solution.

自由自在 have you tried turning it off and on again?
Yojin rubbed his eyes, forcing himself to focus. It was easier than he’d predicted. Something about someone needing his help always got his brain moving. He grinned wryly at the cigarettes when Meara tossed them to him, deftly catching them and shoving him into his backpack. Even if the Robotics Club was his lair, he didn’t keep contraband out. His grin didn’t slip when she mentioned how she got them, even if it made him wonder.
“Thanks. It’s no big deal.” He said, utterly casual.
How does Jack feel about you hitting up older men for favors?
He doubted his friend knew. Yojin didn’t plan to be the one to tell him.
They’re so affectionate. Good for each other in a lot of ways. But in the end, are they just using each other?
Yojin felt pang of guilt stab through his stomach. He wasn’t just thinking about Jack and Meara. He shoved it away, refocusing on her quirk.
Nanites. Robots that small are in theory possible, but outside of Quirks, I’ve never heard of it.
No. The tricky part wasn’t just the existence of the her nanobots, it was how she described them. Responsive to her emotions. Thinking. Borderline AI. Magical. Or...Quirkical?
Angie would go crazy trying to figure it out. Yojin was able to set aside that part of himself, and focus on the smaller problem. You didn’t need to be a rocket scientist to repair a rocket. You just had to know how engines worked.
“You lucky--” Yojin muttered under his breath, taking another sip of his energy drink. “You know I’m gonna spend half my fucking life just trying to reproduce your quirk? And Jack might beat me to it.”
Yojin held up a hand, panic filling his face as that thoughtless remark. Whoops. Unprofessional, and stupid! "Sorry! Joking. Moving on."
He shut up again, holding up a hand for Meara to pause, and pulling a battered notebook from his backpack when she started talking about the second “spirit.” When she resumed, he jotted down notes, all exhaustion gone, intense, furrowed focus on his face.
Two voices. One male, one female. AI from Quirk? Schitzo? DID?
Yojin swallowed, the hair on the back of his neck prickling. It reminded him a little bit of the conversation he’d heard between Reddarc and Angie, or Feng’s antics, but more detailed, less nebulous. Was there something about quirks that drove people crazy?
Well. Summons gotta get their personalities from somewhere. Let’s not even start on Frey.
When Meara finished, he stopped writing, chewing on the tip of his pencil, still frowning.
“Wow. No judgement, but that’s some shit.” Yojin began. Not the most eloquent start, but goddamnit, he was an engineer, not a psychiatrist. “Wonder if there’s anyone out there specifically trained in this. Quirk-AI-Psychiatrist.”
Yojin snorted, drumming his pencil on the text.
“Nah. We wish.”
Yojin whistled through his teeth, still thinking, jotting a few more notes as he tried to pick apart the problem.
“So. Quirk-created intelligence. Basically like a summon, right? Or...maybe two summons. There’s been a lot of back and forth on if summon intelligence is a form of multiple personalities, or if it’s a literal separate consciousness. Let’s um--assume for the moment that these two voices aren’t you.” Yojin said, trying to set some ground rules. A big part of him wasn’t so keen on eagerly accepting that intelligence could just “form” incidentally like that, but the world was weird. “I’m not sure if I can just...open up a dev console, delete a few lines, and suddenly, crazy voice is gone.”
Yojin snorted, opening his laptop, and opening up a python shell. Yeah. Good way to start. Just throw programming languages into the air, and see if the nanobots used WPS encryption on their wifi. Very funny.
“Wonder if Haruuhi could--well, you came to me, so me’s what you got for now. Promise I won’t make it worse, probably, on purpose.” Yojin rambled, starting to get a rhythm. He changed when he was working like this, went from sleepy, odd, and awkward to lazer-focused, brain and mouth moving a mile-a-minute. “Practically, you already have a language down with it. Two, actually. Speech, and physical stimulation. That’s a good start.”
“I think...okay, so mild electrical stimulation might be able to give you a break. There’s always just...talking to it, if we can get an answer. Possibility of a chemical being able to inhibit how it “speaks” to you, like lithium with serotonin uptake. Oh, and worst case scenario…”
Yojin slowed his roll, looking back at Meara, dark brown eyes glittering almost golden.
“I try to see what happens if I use my quirk on yours. I can’t modify devices if I don’t know how they work, so I’d need to break down a nanobot, and they’re still probably tiny, and basically magic to my brain. But...maybe I can feel these...presences. Quirk science, huh?”
Yojin laughed at that. Humans had gone from absurd, idiotic geniuses making stabs in the dark at electricity and astronomy and weaponry and medicine to hyperspecialized scientists making tiny, incremental progress in labs...and quirks had sent them back to the stone age, poking nature with a stick to see how it worked.
“Gimme a second, I’m gonna steal something from the infirmary.” Yojin said, standing up, and turning away. “Seriously--don’t run off.”
Before Meara could answer, Yojin bolted into the room. Barely two minutes later he returned, pink-faced and panting, with UA infirmary’s EKG machine (donated by ASTA), in his arms.
“Okay--” *huff* “We’re gonna hook you up to this.” *huff* “And see if I can chart anything linked to the two AIs.” *Huff.*
Yojin set the machine down with a heavy thump in front of Meara, untangling the diodes, and waving at her head.
“Help me hook you up. Oh. I brought gel. This is gonna feel weird. I'll try not to make it weirder, but not promises."

Meara kida waved him off with the look he gave her after she told him how she procured the pack of smokes. “I work at a maid cafe. Some of the regulars offer me a lot of different shite already. So trust me when I say smokes are a simple item to get. And less km weird.” she said, the last part of it coming out quickly and quietly. The less discussed about the other things the better. “Oh and needless to say, please don’t tell Jack about the smoking. I give that poor boy enough trouble..” she said her voice trailing off. She really hated hiding stuff from Jack, and eventually she’d tell him. But she didn’t want him to deal with that as well, she already put enough on him.
Meara cracked a smile at his not so subtle joke about Jack and her doing the dirty. Her smile was a rare occurrence lately so she greatly appreciated it, even if it wasn’t intentional. “Yeah unless you can replicate in a few years he got you beat.” she said, laughing. It was actually kinda funny to think about how quirk traits, no matter how ludacris they seemed, can get passed down as easily as hair or eye color. “I’ll make sure to bring my future robot dragon babies to you to gloat.” she teased. The only thing that made this funnier was the look on Yojin’s face when he accidentally said it outloud.
She scoffed at the techie’s comment about this all being a lot. “Yeah, You’re telling me mate.” Meara said as she leaned back and looked off into space. This all was indeed a lot of shit. And she would gladly go talk to a specialist in disembodied quirk voices if she could. “Wish indeed…” she replied absentmindedly. She listened as he talked about the different theories on quirk intelligence and whether or not they were actual individual intelligences with unique personalities, or if they were just split off fragments of their users personality and subconscious. “Yer guest is as fucking good as mine Yojin.” she said as she remained reclined back. “God help me if they’re just multiples of me.” she said in a half hearted attempt to joke about it.
Meara just nodded as the other elaborated about what they could possibly do to possibly help the situation. From potential medication combos, to just having a conversation with the voice. “Yes, because I need more drugs in my life. And talking isn’t an easy option either. At least with the other one.” she said quietly. She had sat there and tried to talk with it before, but it never said much. But all it would say is that it was there to protect her. Her body involuntarily tensed up when she saw his eyes glow slightly when he mentioned trying to use his own quirk to try and help. “Yeah… last resort…” She said, a little uneasy. Meara could feel the other presence in her mind stir at the notion and her nanites start to react in response. “Not a threat, cool it…” she thought, mentaly speaking to the entity. She rubbed her right arm, almost like she was soothing the nanites in her arm. She could tell that the entity was not thrilled with that potential treatment route, and it took more mental power than she would like to admit to keep her nanites from fully activating.
She blinked blankly at him when he said he was going to go steal something from the nurses office. “Ummm..” she started but before she could say anything he was gone. Once she was alone she smacked the side of her head in frustration. “He is a very good friend, don’t even think about doing anything to him again.” She hissed. “If he makes you nervous and proves to be threatening, I will protect you.” The disembodied responded simply. “You will fucking do nothing of the sort. He is just trying to help. Fuck off.” She said flatly. The voice vanished after saying that caused a shiver to run down Meara’s spine.
After a few moments Yojin reappeared with a weird looking device. Meara cocked a confused eyebrow as she eyed the techie and the device. He explained what he was gonna try to do with it and Meara just shrugged at him. “You’re the closest thing to an expert here.” She shrugged as she looked at the diodes and gel. “You know most people buy me dinner first before they break out the clear gels Yojin.” Meara said with a smirk. He had it coming after the whole not trying to make it weird comment. She placed a diode on each side of her head on her temples and leaned back in the chair. “Ok Mr. Mad Scientist. Do your thing.” Meara said as she waited to see what tests he was going to run.
