APPEARANCE AND PERSONALITY
Appearance:
Sayama could pass for a professional athlete, with a height of 1.98m and 113kg of mostly muscle, if not for his green skin and natural dark green hair. Occasionally a variety of flowers sprout from the tips of his upright dreadlocks, especially in the spring or after a long meditation session. He also sports a short ponytail that reaches down to about the base of his neck. Beyond that, Sayama is just an ordinary muscular dude. Two staples for his attire are his white bandana/headband and his large (fake) golden bead necklace. Otherwise he wears what can only really be described as "yoga instructor clothes". His "hero clothes", aka what he wears when he goes into the city, is really just whatever he was wearing at home with a streetwear-style hooded poncho thrown over the top so he can "look cooler".
Tied to his Quirk, Sayama's level of fatigue can be seen in his appearance. If he is heavily fatigued, Sayama's green skin and hair will fade to a more regular human brown. This can either be symbolic of a plant dying or it can be seen as his plant half fading away to his human half. Either way, it's not a good sign. Also related to his Quirk, when he activates his cell wall hardening, his skin (and whole body) becomes much more rigid and stiff.

Personality:
Sayama is all about nature, most people would even say too much. He spends a vast majority of his time meditating, becoming one with wildlife, or working out to stay in the best shape possible. Too much of his time, actually, because it left very little time every day to sleep or socialize. And Sayama loved to socialize. Restful nights were few and far between for Sayama, something that may have prevented him from achieving the "perfect natural unity" he desperately tried to achieve. But, man, interacting with people was way too exciting to pass up. As fun as nature was, Sayama loved people more than anything. His favorite people are the ones who work hard to accomplish their goals, but all people are created equal in his eyes. In fact, they were the reason he worked so hard. Between workouts and meditations, Sayama goes into the city to see what kind of trouble he can prevent. Nothing brings him greater joy than helping other people, especially when he knows it's right thing to do.
Helping people is fun! Another problem for Sayama comes with that whole fun thing, though. The bigger the challenge, the more rewarding the success. It can put him in a more precarious spot. He tries not to do something like that with potential victims in the area, but sometimes he can't help it. Of course the safety of citizens is his top priority (while his own safety is more of an afterthought) but an exciting challenge can really get the hemophyll (chloroglobin? water-blood?) pumping!
As a person, Sayama has a good heart and not much can get under his skin. He likes to just go with the flow and let whatever happens happen. Just know that whatever's happening is going to have to deal with him running his mouth the whole time. Playful jabs to friends, daring insults to enemies, somewhere in between to acquaintances, Sayama has it all. And he will use it all. Sayama is always willing to make connections with anybody, even known criminals. He may not like it, but networking is an important way to stay in the loop.
Being so carefree, there's not a lot that Sayama dislikes. Pollution and people who litter are probably at the top of his list - and obviously troublemakers who go against his "Code of Hero" are up there, too - but everything else is pretty inoffensive to Sayama. His biggest pet peeve is people who boast about their importance, especially when they don't have anything to back it up. Oh, and quitters! Never give up! Failure is just the first step in improvement!
Some people would say Sayama is jealous that he never got the opportunity to attend UA High, which is why he has a disdain towards the school, but there's more to it than that. Admittedly, he doesn't know a lot about the school and how it operates, but something just seems fishy about it. Even beyond just UA, the idea of some "higher power" controlling what people do with their birth-given abilities doesn't sit right with Sayama. To him, Quirks are a natural part of life, which is why he thinks they should be fully embraced by society as a whole. A kid who wants to become a hero used their Quirk without supervision? Without a license? Who cares? They've gotta learn somehow, don't they? Back in his day... blah, blah, blah. Sayama doesn't care if he's seen as a criminal or a bad guy in the eyes of the public as long as he knows he did the right thing. He believes in the innate goodness of humankind and he enters every opportunity with an open-mind and a hopeful outlook. Spreading these values with his actions will leave a much bigger impact than words ever would.
With his whole nature shtick, it only makes sense for Sayama to be vegan. Whether that's good or bad is completely subjective and dependent upon the food selection wherever he goes.

HISTORY
Born in the countryside of Japan, Sayama's childhood was... rough? Good? Different people will explain it differently, but the thing is, they're all correct. By all accounts, Sayama had an excellent upbringing, with two parents who worked to raise him into the best man he could be. They both worked on a farm and sold their goods to nearby towns to make a living. This allowed Sayama to go to school, graduate, etc.
The problem comes in with the personalities of his parents. Sayama's mother was very strict, and so was Sayama's 8PM curfew. His mother was quite selective about who her son could hang out with, what he could do in his free time, and where he was going to attend university. Her constant overbearing inadvertently caused Sayama not to trust authoritative figures, which lessened as he got older into more of a dislike towards the system. Skepticism, at the very least.
His father was a character in his own right. He boasted about the success of their painfully average farm and taunted that Sayama could never amount to something so great. As a child, Sayama just thought his father was joking since he would likely inherit the land when that time came, but as Sayama grew into his teenage years, he started to understand his father was deathly serious. Whenever Sayama would try to rebut, it was met with cocky laughter and more (unintentional) insults. Somehow owning a farm had boosted his father's ego to astronomical levels. Sayama's father, and people like him, are what made the man become fascinated by people. Why do people act like that? How else can they act? Some somewhat deep psychological stuff from a high school student.
So how did Sayama end up in the countryside surrounding Tokyo? Living in a handmade hut (or a sleeping bag if he wanted to crash somewhere in the city)? Simple, really. To find himself. Being a plant-boy mutant took a toll on Sayama when he was young. Early on, kids tried to bully him for being green, so Sayama became something of a class clown to take some of the heat away from him. At the time, he wanted nothing to do with his plant physiology. It took him many years for the kids at school to stop treating him differently because of his plant skin, so he could only imagine what things would be like when he moved away from the farm and into a big city.
Making matters even worse, Sayama started to become interested in psychology during his high school years. His mother wanted him to become a plant biologist; because it would suit him. That was the straw that broke the camel's back. Instead of applying to universities and getting ready for the next stage in his life, Sayama decided he was going to move away from the family farm and into the big city as soon as he graduated. Thus, that was exactly what he did. To get away from his authoritarian mother and boastful father, Sayama packed his bag and moved to Tokyo.
Priority number one was finding a job. Worrying about housing and all that could wait. As a late teenager, Sayama found himself working three dead-end jobs while he lived wherever he could lay his head. City parks, under bridges, on rooftops, on co-workers' couches, on co-workers' floors; wherever Sayama could find a place to sleep is where he'd do it. Even his first paycheck was spent on a sleeping bag, which immediately improved the quality of sleep he could get. Despite his ridiculous work schedule, over 60 hours every week, Sayama rarely found himself getting tired. It would happen, yeah, but not nearly as quickly as his co-workers or customers would always seem to be. At first he thought he was just built different, but then he realized that was exactly the case.
He was built different.
The plant physiology he'd been living with for his whole life was the only explanation for how he managed to handle a struggle that should have been impossible. As soon as he realized his plant physiology finally had a beneficial use, Sayama wanted to know more. More about himself, more about plants, more about the possibilities. He started spending time at internet cafes to research plants - everything from their biology to superficial things like their names. Instead of staying at co-workers' houses or on street corners, Sayama started living among the trees and going out into the wild. For the first time ever, he started to feel at home. No overbearing parents, no shackles of society, just a plant man in his natural habitat. Where he was meant to be.
Slowly, his hours at work started to decline. Sayama lost one of his jobs, then another, and then basically the third (he only worked about 1 hour per week; he might as well have quit). For the better part of a year, Sayama found himself among the wild (...of Tokyo's outskirts; he still needed some money after all). There he built a serviceable hut, made a home for himself, and started his self-improvement journey. Each day consisted of wake up, meditation, lunch, workout, meditation, dinner, workout, meditation, sleep, repeat. It was a simple life and Sayama learned a lot about himself.
... How does this tie into Sayama becoming a vigilante?
Turns out, living in almost complete isolation for a year wasn't the right move for a social creature like Sayama. He loved the experience of living among the plants, but he needed to find a balance. Despite being part plant, Sayama was indefinitely more human. He started a job at a small flower shop just a short distance (relatively speaking) from his hut. There he could collect a suitable income while working with something that interested him. More importantly, he started to reintegrate himself to human society.
He made friends, he started attending social events, he... started to see the darkness of humanity. Nature was simple: predators and prey. Humans usually flaunted how civilized and advanced they were, but as he reintegrated into a human life, Sayama started seeing similarities. These people who used their Quirks for their own personal gain with no regard for others... they were predators. Anybody in their path was the prey.
Sayama didn't want to see that anymore.
From his time in the wild, he understood himself better than ever. Cell walls, chloroplasts, things like that were a part of him that he could manipulate to his benefit. These ordinary people didn't have to be the prey. Sayama was used to being a victim. Why not use that to the advantage of others? Something as simple as that was enough to push him in the right direction.
Everything snowballed from there. Sayama read up on the laws regarding Quirk usage in public and decided he may be able to get away with a lot. After all, he was always a plant man. If he happened to find himself in an altercation, was it really his fault if he had to "use" his Quirk? For (instigated) self-defense? Sayama knew his Quirk wasn't made for offense, but if he could distract a would-be criminal long enough for police or help to arrive, then he'd have done his job. He'd serve as a Trojan Horse, one could say.
That settled it. If he was born to be a distraction, then Sayama was ready to make sure he could be the best distraction there ever was. If he could eventually get to a point where he could fight back on his own, too... well, that'd just be icing on the cake.
For a while, Sayama was content with being a passer-by vigilante. Someone who would "stop" crimes when he caught them in action. With everything going on as of late, though, Sayama realized he might have to get more proactive. For the sake of the people.
