It was blisteringly hot that morning, the streets of Tokyo were awash with waves of little mirages here and there. People were on edge and already there'd been a few arrests that morning for confrontations between people just trying to get to work on time. Even so, for some reason there was something refreshing and even cooling about the building that Yumi Tasukai approached. It had that traditional japanese estate look, high walls with tiled crenellations. It spread out over several blocks, making it about the size of a small park. One could see trees inside and from the sound of it a creek cut through it at some point.
There was only a simple wooden plaque against the gate that read "TAKA" as one would write the word "Hawk".
The door would open without any real prompting, the lone security camera at the front gate enough evidence to indicate that at least they had someone watching the front to let her in. Yet it was beyond there that she would find herself in a whole other world...
The Taka Family home in Tokyo proper was just one large dojo. A series of japanese style buildings set on stilts within a mixture of flat grass and sand gardens, framed by a small collection of trees. It was comfortable, cozy, and punctuated by the sounds of young voices exclaiming with each practiced punch within the main room of the dojo. A session was already underway, apparently.
"Oi!" A voice called.
Approaching from the estate in nothing more than blue jeans, a tank top, and heavy black boots, was the blonde haired drill sergeant that trained hero-students in combat. Aquitaine was no larger than Yumi, her aging stunted by her quirk, but where she lacked in physical size she made up in borderline supernatural strength. She cracked a wide, almost manic grin at Yumi as she approached, scratching the back of her head and throwing out her hand.
"Look what the cat dragged in, eh? Gotta say, I was a little surprised when you asked to intern with me. I ain't exactly popular miss super model," She said, grinning; "But if this is what you want, I ain't too worried about it. Why don't you come inside a minute and we can talk about what you wanna do, sorry if we don't rush out there on patrol right away. I've watched your slog runs and trained with you every day; but that dont' mean there ain't more to talk about," She said, nodding toward the building.

Yumi didn't really know what to expect from todays apprenticeship. She'd arrived on the scene of the supposed meeting space with minimal context, only knowing this was where Aquitaine wanted to meet and more than happy to accomodate. She'd made sure to check the weather before choosing which version of her hero costume to come in. With how hot it was going to be she'd opted for the heatwave edition. It was the same material and patterns as the rest of her costumes, consisting of a midrift, sleeveless top as the centerpiece, short shorts, knee high socks with shoe like soles, and bracer coverings that helped channel the electrical currents down her arms. Now from the fact they were meeting somewhere not just 'out on the street' Yumi assumed that they'd be meeting more casually first, and so had worn some more casual attire atop her costume.
She didn't want to be sweating though, so...
Dressed in a half-length open hoodie, and some roomy cargo shorts, Yumi's hero costume top, bracers, and sock-shoes were still very clear, but she wasn't about to double up on layers and with the tight nature of the costume needed to lock in her current, she didn't fancy the idea of getting in and out of this thing after meeting aquitaine, so may as well incorporate it into a normal outfit like this.
Walking up to the gate she didn't hesitate much when it opened on it's own, noticing the camera well enough and as she walked over to the dojo like structures, she gave the pro hero a nice wave. It could be... hard, remembering that this woman was twice her age rather than pretty close to it like she sometimes looked. Maybe she could use her physical appearance as an argument to being a teacher if her own age ever played against her when she applied post graduation.
A-anyway. Awkward visuals aside she maintained a warm smile as she met her mentor for the day. She was a little surprised by the idea that they'd just be... hanging out first? That was the impressions he was getting, that aquitaine wanted to get to know her first. "Wellllll popularity or not I still need to make sure I can actually do my job as a hero before I worry about being popular you know? Who better to drill that into me than the commander of fort slog?~ Lead the way though, I'm happy to follow your pace."

Aquitaine rested her hands on her hips, a toothy grin on her face. She nodded, "Good, You get it," She tapped her head, "You're a knight for the people, popularity can wait till people are safe," She added, turning on her heel and walking back into the compound. She snickered a little bit at the title 'commander of fort slog'. Her grin getting even a little wider, she didn't confirm nor deny that she liked it, only that she found it funny. As they walked past one of the main buildings, a man raised a hand in greeting. He wore a very traditional looking kimono, had dark hair and eerie blue eyes. His poise was everything that Aquitaine wasn't. He was calm, refined-looking, behind him through a window, one could see students practicing some sort of martial arts form.
"That's the Taka dojo, my husband runs it," Aquitaine said, walking up a low set of stairs into an open air path that connected the dojo to another building. She made her way to the latter, ducking her head a little They stepped into a comfortable looking living room space of a very traditional style. Some kid was laying sprawled across the table, sound asleep with a text book on the back of her head. "Oi, Seiki, wake up, we have company," Aquitaine grunted, kicking the table. The girl jumped, scrambled back and nearly whacked her head on the wall. She covered her nose and squinted up at Yumi.
"Oh. My. God. You're Yumi Tasukai! Oh my god I have your copy of ASTA its uh... UHH.... its right over um!" She started scrambling around the room, Aquitaine shrugged and tilted her head.
"Seiki. Seiiikiiii." She called gently, trying to get her daughter to pay attention. "SEIKI!" She growled.
Seiki stopped, turning her head wide eyed with a pile of newspapers in her hand. "Yeeesss mother?" She laughed nervously, her hair turning yellow and her nails turning blue. Aquitaine sighed and looked over at Yumi.
"Sorry about that," She said, scratching her head and looking at Seiki; "You can politely ask her for her autograph after she and I are done talking, give us some space," Aquitaine ordered, nodding to the door. "She's apprenticing today."
Seiki stared at her mother, then at Yumi, her eyes went wide with delight and she scrambled out of the room without a single word. Aquitaine let out another sigh and grinned savagely at Yumi. "Pretty sure you don't have popularity to worry about, kid," She laughed, sitting down at the table on a cushion. She rested her elbow on her knee and leaned back a little. "Right, lets talk about expectations for this apprenticeship. You said you wanted to make sure you could actually do your job. But you fight well enough. What did you want to learn from this old beat stick?' She asked, jerking a thumb toward her chest. "I wanna hear it from you, what do you think you're lacking?" Aquitaine pressed, eyebrow raised.

Yumi smiled warmly as the woman before her called her a knight for the people, chuckling a little and nodding along as she followed behind her deeper into her home. It was pretty sizeable, and she briefly wondered if all the pro heroes were paid this well, or if it was some family money or inheritance that had her living like this. “If you don’t mind me saying you have a fairly impressive home. Even if some of the buildings have other uses like er, the dojo? To have it all on your own home turf is pretty… hehehe. Pretty ‘wow’ seems like the most appropriate response.~” She briefly glanced to the more refined motions of the man working from the dojo, nodding along to Aquitaine’s word about it being her husband. She wondered if it was a weird dynamic, having a wife who could arguably pass for her late teens but… nooooot an issue she was brave enough to ask one of her teachers about, keeping her lips shut as she followed along.
With her own mother having a European heritage and her father having a more ‘modern aesthetic’ to the way he liked to decorate his home, preferring typically restern comforts like couches, arm rests, a reclining chair in one room and even getting an apartment with a lot more space than your typical Japanese apartment, seeing a place like this, a lot more traditional in nature, felt like it should be out of a story book she was that unused to it. She briefly felt a little out of place. A recent talk with Sonya flittered into her mind however, and she held herself a little straighter. Even if this woman was her teacher she still had to hold a good image for Miss Sonya. Heck if anything, doing it infront of someone who should be ‘imposing’ to her like a teacher meant Yumi would just find it easier when dealing with the general public.
She glanced across to the younger girl sleeping with her head down on a table, suppressing a chuckle behind her hand and her teacher’s back… this must be Yasashi’s sister. She’d only heard about her in passing, sadly never managed to meet them before, this should be interesting.
She blushed a little but wasn’t too embaressed about being identified by the ATSA cover, afterall Kai had noticed her the same way and that was one of the better friendships she had at the moment, even if she worried Kai idolized her a hair too much. “Doooon’t worry. I’m pretty sure I remember what I looked like on it.~” She offered with a playful wink, deciding to be a smiiiidge cheeky and doing a pose from one of the inner pages of that issue. A hand behind her head, one on her hip, cocked to the side with her chin lifted a little off to the opposite side. A powerful pose for a summer issue to say the least, and a short lived one as she quickly eased it down with a playful chuckle.
She realized as Seiki fangirled over her, as much as she appreciated the praise of her peers for this stuff she was always paranoid it was fake or polite, that they mightn’t see much value in the hobbies or side careers she undertook but… well, here was a girl who barely knew her freaking out cause she saw her in a magazine. It was… uplifting, to say the least, and helped validate her view of her own work a little. She offered her a sly wink as she had to slink away, trying to tell her she’d definitely get an autograph if she asked nicely later~
“Yeeeeah that doesn’t seem like something I’ll have to worry about.” She chuckled gently as she came to sit down, cross legged on the opposing cushion, her hands comfortably cupping her ankles. She wasn’t too used to sitting cross legged given the chairs and couches she and her family preferred to use over the traditional Japanese floor cushions, buuuut it wasn’t too uncomfortable. “As for what I want out of this… field experience. That’s as simple as it is really.” She kept her chin level and held a warm, confident smile, her time with Sonya having done a lot for her confidence it seemed in addressing her peers or even those above her.
“I’ve been doing a lot of work in the hopes of being a good face for heroes with my other job and I’ve been working hard on hopefully becoming a teacher at UA myself one day but… I know I lack the necessary field experience. It’s all well and good running fort slog knowing no ones ACTUALLY in danger, but it’d be good to put myself in more uncomfortable, real situations, where I can put my training to the test… sure I know the theory, I know I can shoot a lightning bolt the length of a football field, I can check all the floors of a model apartment building in about 2 minutes but… all of that’s useless if I can’t apply it in the field, right?”

Aquitane watched Seiki go, scratching her head and letting out a sigh through her nostrils. Her kids were getting out of hand. She glanced back at Yumi and sat down, flopping onto the ground with a groan and habitually reaching for a small cooler set in a panel next to her spot on the table. Her fingers stopped and she exhaled, hopping up to walk over to the fridge instead; grabbing a pair of bottles of water and bringing them over. She settled in with those, handing one to Yumi and nodding as the girl spoke; she rested an elbow on her knee and rubbed her nose with her thumb.
"You're right, all of that is useless without field experience," Aquitaine said flatly, opening her bottle and taking a sip. It wasn't beer but it would do. She leaned back and regarded Yumi; "But the only problem is that we can't just make situations where you can test those particular skills," the Ironclad hero waved her hand; "It sounds circular, but the reality is you'll never be truly prepared to face what's out there. So you learn as much as you can at UA, you master the skills you'll need and adapt to situations as they come. Then you'll be out here with us; and you'll find yourself in new and unexpected combinations of circumstances. And you're just gonna have to deal with it;" She let out a breath.
"Thats why I run fort Slog the way I do, it's not about learning one particular routine or another. Its about being able to adapt, immediately, to a different crisis. It's why it changes every month as well," She crossed her legs and rubbed her chin; "But yes, field experience is crucial, even a simple, boring, patrol is something you should be comfortable with doing. But these days?" She shrugged; "I have a few ideas of where we can go. Just remember that this is for training; Heroes don't go looking for trouble. We solve problems, we stop crimes in progress," She said, holding up her finger warningly and then broke into a grin.
She got to her feet; "We're going to Kabukicho tonight, hope you're ready. Highest crime rate in the city," She said, resting her hand on her hip. For now, lets get some warm ups in, you can show off for the fangirl too. Maybe inspire her to pick the hero track instead of support.

Yumi watched as the technically older woman before her reached for some sort of can, and judging from how she reacted to it and went for the fridged water instead it was clear enough to see what was going on there, a soft breath passing through her. She tried not to pass any sort of judgement, it wasn’t like she even expected herself to be alcohol free her entire life but… well, at least Aquitaine registered the situation she was in and went for the water. Though even then… she wanted to see this woman more like a colleague than someone who was basically about to babysit her for the evening. “If… if you want to drink I genuinely don’t mind-“ And despite her momentary thoughts on the matter, she truly didn’t, no awkwardness or nerves in her expression as she added. “I mean, if that’s how you relax, it’s how you relax right? Besides, I imagine your quirk might be pretty similar to Red Horns in that regard.~ Young body or not I don’t see you getting drunk very easily.~” She chimed with a warm smile, she may not have been exactly right but she doubted the woman was a lightweight anyway if she kept beer so close to hand.
As far as her talk about field experience went, Yumi gave a firm nod, not disagreeing or feeling stupid about how she’d worded herself, or anything in that regard. “Oh absolutely, I understand completely. At the end of the day though that’s what I’m looking for. Fort slog is great, a testemant to your own ideas, Asta’s generosity, the support students hard work and tireless effort, but… at the end of the day it’s still not the real world. I appreciate any effort you can make for me, to help me see real action, but your absolutely right. Heroes can’t go looking for trouble… and they can’t fall into complacency either. Whether it’s seeing what crimes the real world can produce, or learning to stay vigilant even when a patrol seems peaceful, that’s what I need experience with, and I thought a strong heroine like you, a disciplined hero, could help teach me both sides of the coin over the course of an apprenticeship… a-assuming of course you’d want to keep working with me for the full length of an apprenticeship…”
Okay, maybe even after Sonya, she still had SOME nerves in that regard.
Taking a sip from the bottle she’d been offered a moment ago, she lifted her gaze as her mentor for the day mentioned they’d be getting in a warm up and showing off for Yasashi’s little sister, scoffing a little and pushing up to her own feet. “I mean I don’t think the support track is anything to look down on but, er… what kind of warm up do you have in mind?” She barely felt like she’d sat down buuuut Aquitaine didn’t seem like the kind of person who liked to sit still for long.
