| ◀ | As Sweet as Candy Ever since her business picked up speed her mornings had become surprisingly predictable. 5:30 AM, alarm goes off, hit snooze, begrudgingly wake up 30 minutes later to the second alarm. Then she took a shower, normally not even allowing herself the time to enjoy the warm water as she woke up. By the time she got out, dressed and beautified with her makeup, it tended to be between 7 and 7:30 am. From there she would make sure Amai was up and getting ready before heading down for breakfast. Usually she made it for both her and her daughter but there were days all she had was a cup of coffee or her daughter only had some toast. By 8 to 8:30am she was downstairs in the kitchen of her store, receiving food deliveries for the candies she couldn’t make herself or the drinks, making sure she had enough stock for the day and would begin on special orders. This time of day was iffy, sometimes she was done quick, others she would be working right up until they opened. Today thankfully was one of the lighter days. She created a bunch of caramel the other day, so she only really had to handmake some of the chocolate candies and fill out the day’s special orders. But by 9am, she was caught up, sitting at one of the few tables in her store with a cup of coffee in hand while going over some invoices, order documents and other business-related papers. The store was open by now, despite the time on the door saying 11:00am-8pm. Honestly, she opened early on days she finished early. Although people rarely came through until closer to lunch, looking for some sweet treats to bolster their lunches or dinners.
The store was rather nice though, consisting of a main counter which spanned most of the length of the store with display cases of her candies. A cash register and a door behind it were on one side. On the other side of the counter where two drink coolers where people could grab what they wanted to pay for. The store itself had 4 places to sit. Two standard size round tables with four chairs surrounding them more central in the building. By the front windows there where two tall tables that had two seats each. She offered them mostly for regulars, but not many people used them to begin with. For a while Kaya had been debating on getting rid of the larger tables but in the end, she used them herself, so they stayed. In the back of the store there was the kitchen and a staircase that lead upwards to her apartment.
Kaya would sigh as she looked at her expenses. She wasn’t doing exactly bad per say, still far from and level of well of, but more often than not she worked 7 days a week, and as the only official employee it slowly was wearing her down. As she debated on closing the store proper and only accepting calls, she would flip through the papers, as she did something that was stuck between them fell out and onto the floor. Reaching down to pick up the paper she would look through. She couldn’t remember where she got it from, but it was a flier for a parcel service.
“Golden Sun Direct Delivery…” She said to herself as she read it over. She had considered a delivery system for a while after one of her regulars asked about it. The fox would pull out her phone and dial the number on the paper. Maybe since she was going decently well she could afford them. “Hello?” She would ask after the phone was picked up. “My name is Kaya Okashi, I own and operate Candy Fox Konfections. I was wondering if we could speak in person about potentially delivering some of my candies through you. I am tied down at my store but if you can stop by I would love to talk about rates and fees.” |

Relatively light day today! Wow! That had been a rarity lately with how quickly her business had suddenly grown within the last month. She swore Yumi was some kind of good luck charm, bumping into her with that magazine had at least tripled her orders, maybe even quadrupled. She had no idea, she wasn't very good at mathematics. Meeting with that man... what was his name again, Inukai-san? Meeting with him had secured her first proper business contract and regular deliveries to there had been sustaining her income pretty damn well. Maybe it was time to spruce up the office a bit? Maybe she could even afford a part-timer at this rate! Humming as she did some basic workouts in her office, Kai was enjoying the chance to take it easy until a little later. All of her delivery slots were in the afternoon and the distribution center hadn't informed her of any special deliveries or asked her to pitch in for a particularly busy day. Doing one knee-lift after another, her mind wandered to her friends and what they were doing right now. She knew Yumi had taken up a lot more contract time with ASTA and was doing her internships; she suspected Kirk was doing much the same while the summer went on. Apparently classes started for them on the 31st. Was she supposed to feel proud of them? She was. It's not like she was much older than either of them but she'd been paying taxes for quite a while now and only in the last month had she really started to interact with the Hero System. Like an investment she'd only seen shaky returns on suddenly blossoming into something wonderful. As a citizen she could be proud of what the collective consciousness of Japan had built and in her own small, very small way, she'd contributed to it. there was a sense of pride and accomplishment in that. But her work wasn't over and neither was theirs. If anything the world was more dangerous now than it'd ever been. That list leaked online had her worried. Ishtar threatened to tear down everything she had been so proud to help create. She had faith in the Heroes... or at least she had faith in Yumi. She just didn't know how much they'd all have to sacrifice to remove this stain from Japanese history. She hoped people would look back in one hundred years and only see a footnote. A forgotten name in a triumphant time. Just then, the phone rang, breaking her out of her thoughts. She cleared her throat as she stepped over to it, snatching up the phone and pressing the button to hold it up to her ear. "Hello there! Golden Sun Direct Delivery, Inoue, Kaisaki speaking, how can I help you?" A smile spread over her face as she spoke, that sense of pride washing over her once again as she was so happy she could say that for real. Ah! Another delivery contract! And a business, perfect! Candy Fox Konfections... Kon-fec-tions... what did that word mean...? Candy, though, she knew what that meant! A candy shop! "Of course! Always willing and able to speak to a potential customer directly! Now that I think about it, I think I've seen your shop before in my travels. No need to give me the address, I know exactly where it is! I'll be on my way momentarily! Have a good morning!~" With that she placed the phone down, quickly grabbing her notebook to scribble a few notes. Okashi-san. Candy Fox Konfections. Mustafu Shopping District.------------ The train ride to Mustafu had always been fairly short, it was mainly the trip to and from the train station that took the most time. Crowds, rambunctious students, tourists, sports fans; all of it contributed to a fairly congested environment that made Kai wish her Quirk had been flying rather than sprinting. That'd at least mean she could move around without disturbing anyone's day. As it was, she was squeezing between people, accidentally shoving or bumping into them, just barely making train connections... something needed to be done to fix this. Clearly adding more stations wasn't working either, they'd tried that. Ah well, she wasn't exactly a politician or a city planner, what did she know? All in all, it didn't really take long to get to Mustafu and she had a delivery here anyway later on, so she was at least able to visit somewhere nice for lunch after this meeting. It was a nice day, rather hot as well, so there'd been no need to change into her secondary uniform. Just her usual shirt and shorts; besides that always made a more professional impression. People quite rightly seemed to get rather uncomfortable with a lady in a bikini showed up to hand them a package but... well, it was either that or they didn't get the package at all those days. The candy store wasn't hard to find, exactly where she'd seen it before now. Looking at it, she had a twinge of giddy joy... maybe she should grab something for Yumi while she was here? That was romantic, right? Giving chocolates? Or... was she not supposed to do those kind of gestures considering she and Yumi were... well, friends-plus. Friends-squared. Well hey, better to ask forgiveness than permission, right? Pushing open the door, she popped her head inside with a beaming smile, looking around for the owner. "Hey there! How are ya? It's Inoue, Kaisaki from Golden Sun Direct Delivery, at your service! Feel free to call me Kai though, s'faster!"

| ◀ | As Sweet as Candy “Great, glad to hear it. Do you have some paper? I can give you my address- Oh really! That’s great to hear. Glad to hear my little slice of Japan is stands out enough. I’ll see you in a moment, have a great morning yourself!” The call clicked to an end shortly after that, well wasn’t that exciting! Who knew she was popular enough that someone who had never visited knew exactly where her store was! Kaya would be lying if she denied the fact, she felt a bit warm inside when she heard that, maybe this was a sign that she was moving in the right direction. But she would clean up her paperwork, considering she had a guest coming over soon it would be rather rude if she was still working on it by the time Kai arrived, besides she was pretty much done anyway. But taking the papers back she would dart up the stairs and drop them on her kitchen table and would place the cup of coffee in the sink before sprinting back downstairs. Cleaning her store so it looked pristine as possible she would wait. It was still before opening so only a certain amount of people would walk in.
“Welcome to Candy Fox KONfections.” Kaya would say, and as always putting the emphasis on the ‘kon’ part of the word. It was such a stupid play on words with the onomatopoeia for a fox stuff into a word. But she loved it so much. However, a girl, who looked like she was in her early 20’s walked in rather bright uniform. “Oh! Hello!” Kaya would say excitedly as her guest introduced herself and Kaya would make her way to the otherside of the counter, waving for Kai to chose a seat so they could talk. “Do you want anything to drink? I sadly don’t have much mostly water, soda and nitro-brew coffee.” Kaya wished she had some other types of food to recommend but sadly she only had candy. She was dressed rather plainly though, black slacks, a blue blouse and sneakers. A while apron with her logo was wrapped around her front and a white bandana was wrapped around her head save for two large fox ears. If it wasn’t for her nine large and fluffy tails, she would look rather normal. But grabbing her drink and whatever Kai asked for she would sit across from the young woman.
“So I figure we should start with the most painful of Band-Aids. How much do you charge for your services and how often are you available to deliver? Do I have a level of delay with orders I make?” Kaya would ask in a barrage of questions before as revelation would snap on her face and she would get up. “My apologies, one moment.” She would say as she ran back from behind the counter and grabbed a box. Snatching two of each type of candy she made plus one thing of cotton candy she would head back over to the table. “I don’t want to have you deliver without knowing what we sell, in the off chance you get asked I would like for you to be able to give recommendations. So eat up.”

The woman's greeting was kind and warm, the type of greeting someone would give if they genuinely gave a crap about customer service, if they wanted people to really feel at home in their store. Already she was giving Kai a good impression of the place; if this lady was even half as passionate about customer service as Kai herself was, they'd get along great! Of course the business side of her told her that she still needed to make a profit to keep the doors open and the lights on, both of them did. It reminded her of that white-haired guy from the video game Conjurer 3: Savage Pursuit, he never worked for free, neither should she.
Kai slipped inside the store fully as Kaya moved around the counter, happily skipping over to one of the chairs and siting herself down. She looked a bit like an antsy child moreso than a businesswoman but she attributed that to her excitable nature. Here she was about to make one of her first ever business deals, quite literally feeling like a kid in a candy shop. "Oh, no no I'm good! No need to worry about me! Besides, when I drink anything caffeinated my mind starts going at a million miles an hour, haha!" So did her body, frankly. She remembered drinking a can of Blue Ox and feeling the entire world was slowing down around her. Weeeeird...
In any case, she didn't really need much. Her unique biology tended take care of most of that for her anyway. She took this time to observe the woman though. Beautiful, yet emotionally hardened. Soft, gentle, caring and yet seemingly with some sort of firm edge to her and a need for organisation. Clearly a mother; she recognized the signs from her own mother. The lady wasn't going grey yet, so it was probably only one or two kids. How sweet though! A lovely young mother running a candy shop!
As she returned with her drink, Kai awkwardly tried to cross her legs, only to feel very uncomfortable with the position and return to her normal sitting on the edge of the seat, leaning forward. Her expression was intense and excitable; almost burning with eagerness. Yet, her expression softened somewhat as price came up. That really was the most painful bandage, as Kaya had said. "Generally for customers I charge 12% of the item's value to a minimum of 300 yen for delivery. My rate for businesses would be the same for single deliveries but 10% for bulk and a case-by-case charge for sensitive items like documents or special orders."
She let out a short chuckle, rubbing the back of her head bashfully. "W-well, maybe not too much bulk, I don't have a van yet for deliveries, haha! Have to use my bike for now! But I'll let you know when that changes!" Kai understood that 12% was a big cut into some people's profits but once again no one worked for free. She couldn't charge people what she could afford, then she'd make little to no money and the minimum charge discouraged low-value deliveries that could be handled by larger companies. However, she made up for the price by going above and beyond with customer service. That's why she had been getting such good reviews. Every customer was important and valued.
"Everyone gets specific delivery slots. The way I'd probably work it is by coming to your store a few times a week to pick up packages and then delivering them throughout those days; not including special orders and such obviously!" She gave an enthusiastic salute, grinning widely. "I pride myself on being as available as possible and never being late, ma'am!"
Kai could only blink as Kaya left the table, rushing behind the counter to bring out various types of candies. Her eyes lit up in glee at the sight of it, almost drooling with anticipation as she took a sample, squealing slightly as it melted in her mouth, the sugar rushing through her bloodstream so much faster than most, like a drug. "It's so gooood!~ Oh my goooood! I'm gonna have to get some of these for Yumi, she'd love 'em!"

| ◀ | As Sweet as Candy Upon hearing that caffeine wasn’t very good for Kai, Kaya would bring her guest a bottle of water. It was rather warm out after all, even if she didn’t drink it now it would be helpful for later. But Kaya would listen intently to the delivery woman, almost as if the rest of the world were shut off during that time. But upon hearing the rates Kaya’s mind would start to work through numbers. That was significantly cheaper then what she was expecting. But this girl seemed so nervous? Was she just not sure about prices yet? If she accepted this deal, she may need to be ready for have delivery prices to hike in the future, but for now this was more than acceptable, considering her profit margins where rather large already.
“Alright Kai, you have a deal! I will have to let my customers know that same day delivery still isn’t possible, at least past a certain time but I think they will enjoy not always having to run out to my store. I know it’s a bit out of the way for most people since not everyone can make daily trips to the shopping district. But as for delivery times, would you have opens for slots after 2pm? It would make people more likely to place orders for that same day. I sell more and you make more in the end! Help you get that delivery van a bit faster.” Kaya would nod to herself and a smile would creep up her face as Kai dug into the treats. It was always nice to see someone knew enjoy her candies.
“Those cookie looking candies are called Pralines. They are believed to have originated in France but they are quite popular in the United States southern states. The recipe I used to make these where based off a southern American one. It’s caramel and oven roasted pecans. However, I made the caramel extra crispy so mine have a very brittle or cookie like texture to them! The ones who have are the original, but I have some covered in dark chocolate so the sweet gets balanced out more. They are sold by the box in increasing quantities of six.” There as a level of excitement as Kaya began to give Kai the run down on her candies. “The ones next to them are standard hard and soft caramels, nothing to really write home about, but delicious all the same. They get sold by the bags and tend to be my main amount I was selling. Oh! Before I forget do you have anything insulated? Long time exposure to heat can melt the candies. So, something that is room temp would be best to ship them in if not lightly cooled.”
The thought came to her while she was going down the list. She was quick to return to it however. “The lollipops are actually just extra chewy caramel on a stick covered in chocolate. The chocolate helps me wrap it and not get stuck to everything. I took inspiration from cake pops for those. And finally…” Kaya’s hands would hover over to the candy foxes and hearts. “These are our chocolate foxes and sweethearts, they are fundamentally similar, Molded chocolate that is either dark or milk and both are solid, and caramel filled. However, the sweethearts also have strawberry and minty fillings option on top of that. And they are perfect for couples.”
The smile on her face becoming a bit slyer for just a moment. “Which I think your Yumi might like quite a bit. We sell them in decorative heart shaped boxes. They are the most expensive thing we sell however.” Hopefully, her intuition was to far off. Normally if someone her age wanted to buy chocolates or candy for someone, they are rather close to them in some capacity or where romantically involved somehow. At least for her husband she was very forward with the gift of candy. Some stuff happened between that but in the end, she ended up with Amai and a ring at the end. “We’ll process your order before you leave here. I’m glad to see you enjoy them so much! I am probably not going to allow people to order drinks, so you won’t have to worry about carrying those yet, maybe after your van is bought, I’ll add them! I will make sure all payments are made ahead of time as well!”
