It had been a busy first day of the trip. She’d wanted everyone to get the most of it, wake up at the hotel and be able to enjoy themselves from Saturday to Sunday. That meant however that the trip had been organized pretty much right away afterschool with just enough time for people to go home, grab their bags and meet at the train station. She wouldn’t be surprised if one or two people =cough- Yojin and feng =cough= had just entirely forgot to pack and came to the meeting place sans swimsuit buuuut… well Yojin had Chimera and Angelica to cover his ass and Feng…
Feng had no excuse. She wouldn’t be surprised if she tried to bathe in her normal clothes tomorrow out of pride refusing to let her admit she forgot her swimsuit.
Yumi herself on the other hand had all the stuff she needed but where some of the other students had managed to get some early time in the hot springs Yumi had been still feeling sweapt off her feet. She’d made it her duty to make sure everyone had the right room and there were no issues and even with it being Hiro’s family’s hotel he’d stuck with them when they gave the grand tour so that she could better help anyone if they got lost around the place in the future. Beyond that she had to make sure Kai was introduced to everyone she could and…
It’d been a day and a half, and now it was finally her turn to get some time in the hot springs.
In all honesty, this late at night, she still expected one or two people to be in the female springs enjoying the chilling breeze mixed with the steamy waters but… no. Didn’t seem to be the case pleasantly enough She let out a warm sigh as she finished peaking from the locker room and went back to getting changed, throwing on a cute cosplay swimsuit she’d made before coming on the trip. It was effectively a tube top bikini with a sarong buuuuut she’d used it out of pseudo-materials designed to look like towels. They were still water resistant and wouldn’t absorb water and slide off or anything, but she thought it helped with the ‘aesthetic’ of the experience by wearing what looked like ‘well placed towels’ rather than any old swimsuit.
Still, no one to show it off to so it’s not like it mattered to anyone more than her. She made sure it did indeed fit well before walking out into the hot spring, taking in a deep breath of the steamy air. She remembered coming to one of these… years ago. As a kid. And even then it was pretty much her birthday present. Due to the less controlled nature of her quirk as a kid Yumi had a medical card that, rather than explaining her disability, effectively banned her from open water sources. Basically a reminder she could face legal action if she accidentally electrocuted someone by being an idiot and going into a public pool, so her parents had been nice enough to rent a place like this out once for a few hours as a birthday treat with them. Nowadays she was fine, legally allowed to engage in open water activities but… remembering the difference could result in a mildly pleasant sensation. It was upsetting recalling what the limits on her life used to be sure, but now she just got to enjoy all these things practically for the first time with a mature enough mind to reeeeeally enjoy it, feeling the warm waters soaking against her skin as she eased herself into the edge of the pool, letting out a relieved sigh as she just took in the cool night chill against her shoulders clashing with the warmth of the pool.

LATE NIGHT PRAWN THE JOKES ABOUT "BECOMING A SHRIMP IN A HOTPOT" had actually come from a place of fear—not that Charlotte would ever confess that to her peers. While her fear of swimming had been surmounted by the advent of her ability to breathe underwater, a general (and perfectly reasonable) fear of hot water remained. She didn’t sweat, and was covered head-to-toe in chitin… did that mean it was possible to cook herself alive?
And, jokes aside, no one had expressed any concern over this to Charlie. Perhaps they’d just assumed that this was a possibility that the prawn had already entertained in her younger years. They had no way of knowing that the prawn only took cold showers on principle, and had never set foot in a spa or warm bath.
This is the thought that rattled around Charlotte’s brain, in the wee hours of the night after everyone else had gone to bed. How could she talk her way out of soaking in an onsen, when this was the express purpose of their trip? Trying to sort through this while lying in bed, while her other temporary-roomies were comatose, was impossible. At least at home she could try and burn through her restlessness with passion-projects and technological commissions alike. Here, Charlie was just alone with her thoughts.
She would just have to dip into the hot springs to find out. And, honestly, this was probably the best time to try it. No nosey onlookers, and if it went bad, she wouldn’t cause a scene because there’d be no one around to have a meltdown about it. Easy peasy. She wouldn’t be able to sleep, anyways, until she put her anxieties to rest.
So Charlotte hoisted herself from bed, quietly dug through her backpack and procured a swimsuit and a towel, before slipping silently from the room.
The walk was quiet. Even the counter-staff just gave Charlotte a nod as she passed, and the prawn nodded back. In her rush, she’d left her surgical mask in the room. She kept her ears trained on the hotspring as she transitioned from hotel to locker-room. Cautious lavender eyes cased the rows-upon-rows. Quiet. Perfect.
The prawn found an unused locker and changed methodically, shrugging out of her basketball shorts, oversized t-shirt, and undergarments. These were wadded-up and placed in the locker. Charlotte then wriggled into her pair of black-and-white patterned swim-trunks, cinching the drawstring tight around her gaunt waist.
Usually, her androgynous appearance caused problems in publicly-gendered spaces, so the prawn had to wriggle her way into foolish-looking bikinis to really drive the “yes, I am a female” point home. But… it was the dead of night. No one would give her trouble for being bare-chested and in trunks. The prawn swung her towel over her shoulder, and trekked towards the women’s side of the hot springs.
Moments later, the prawn emerged from the locker room, hit by the wall of frigid night air. Well, if ever the warm water would be welcomed, it’d be on a frosty night like this.
Charlotte’s eyes flitted over the pool appraisingly, only to come to a halt on a reposed red-haired figure. There was a momentary panic—an inkling of “maybe I can try again in a half-hour”—until she recognized the other person present. It was none other than the trip’s organize, Yumi.
Well, now it would be weird to back-out. Reluctantly, the prawn padded towards the hot-springs, eyeing the roiling water.
“…hey,” she greeted simply, before cautiously lowering herself into the water. One foot, then the other, followed by the rest of the prawn.
“…you’re up late.”

Yumi had briefly closed her eyes to just focus on the mix of warm and cold where the water line met her body, tipping her head back in a relaxed state when the shifting doors between the pools and the changing rooms caught her attention, drifting her head up slowly with a slightly tired look in her eyes like she was just about read to pass out in the pool herself when Charlie made it across, her vision blurred enough that she could only really make out her shape when she was already putting a foot in the pool, brow raising in surprise but certainly not in an unpleasant manner by any means.
“Oh hey Charlie…~” She responded, trying to put energy into her voice but clearly somewhat tired herself. “Sorry if I’d known you wanted this place to yourself too I mighta rented one of the smaller pools, ehehee…~” She smiled warmly all the same, definitely welcoming to the prawn girls presence. At the comment of being up late she gave the typical- “Same to you~” Before responding more genuinely, rolling back her shoulders as she relaxed further.
“It’s just been a loooong day… I know some people got a chance to roll into the pools after we got off the train but I wanted to get the lay of the place, went for the grand tour with Hiro and all that, that way I know what I’m talking about if anyone comes to me for help ya know? After all that though I still felt tense as hell so I thought I’d come down for a dip… didn’t actually think It’d be empty to be honest but it was a pleasant surprise.” She quickly added though- “Although company is also a pleasant surprise before you read too much into that.~” She stuck the tip of her tongue out in a playful expression, bringing her arms up to rest along the edge of the pool behind her as she sat up a little more.
“How about you? Didn’t ever take you for a night owl if I’m honest.” Charlie always came off a little quiet and reserved, even in text chat. Not the best judge of anyone’s personality really but that was the most she’d ever really interacted with this girl. She pictured a reserved girl like that might be eager to pass out after a long day like this, but it wasn’t like it was too much of a stretch that she’d just want some alone time to relax too. “Your roommate causin’ too much of a ruckus for you to sleep?” She didn’t have that problem with Kai. That girl’s batteries started to run on empty the moment the sun went down.

late night prawn THE PRAWN FROZE AS YUMI apologized, her brow stitching in confusion. Sorry? For what? Before the other girl could finish her apology, the prawn was hurriedly waving a dismissive hand.
“No no, it’s okay,” Charlie insisted, “I don’t need the pool to myself. Please. Don’t let me disturb you.”
The remark made the prawn wonder if Yumi did, genuinely, want the pool to herself. That anxious hand found its way to the back of Charlotte’s neck again. This was silly—maybe she should just leave and come back in an hour—that way Yumi could have the pool to herself? But Yumi was still talking… it’d be rude to leave in the middle of a conversation. And this could be better if Charlie was worried about the hot water having an adverse effect on her…
So Charlie took a reluctant seat along the edge of the spring, a few meters away from Yumi. She sunk back so that her head was pointed skyward, but the “relaxed” pose was more of an illusion. Beneath the roiling water, Charlotte nervously gripped the hem of her trunks. How long was long enough to be polite, before making a break for it? What if she really did cook alive?
“O-oh, yeah,” Charlie agreed, “It’s good to be prepared.”
Even if Yumi insisted that the company was welcomed, Charlotte still couldn’t be too sure. She could just be… being polite.
“I mostly just… got food and napped, when we got here,” Charlotte sighed, “I uh… the train was… a lot.”
A lot of socializing in a small frame of time, even if two of the parties present on the train were Charlies’ roommates.
“Oh, no! N-nobody’s keeping me up,” Charlotte insisted, trying to clear the good names of her roommates, “Everyone’s asleep, actually. Sound asleep.”
She sat-up when making the protest, momentarily compelled by her zeal.
“I’m… actually a total night-owl,” the prawn explained, “I stay up half the nigh working on tech… to the point that I fall asleep in class sometimes, and need afternoon naps.”
Not exactly brag-worthy accomplishments, by any means.
“If anything, my roommates keep me in-line… Chim tries to limit the hours when I can use power tools but… I dunno. I find a way,” Charlie sighed, humored by the confession.

Yumi let out a soft chuckle as Charlie categorized the train as… ‘a lot’. Yeah, yeah, it was certainly that to say the least. Yumi never fully passed out but once she got everyone on board and made sure Kai knew some names for the rest of the weekend she’d ended up just closing her eyes and resting her cheek on the young woman’s shoulder hoping to get some rest before the rest of the day. Plus it had left her with some energy so she could enjoy a late night dip like this. “Yeeeeah I can definitely get what you mean… I consider myself somewhat extroverted but even I get overwhelmed by this school and it’s… ‘noise’.” She idly rubbed the side of her head, that seemed the nicest way to put it, ehehe…
She’d quirk a brow over at Charlie as they went into detail about how they were infact a nightowl and, despite being practical neighbours for a few months Yumi realized just how little she actually knew about Charlie. She knew she was a support student but somehow she’d never gotten the idea that she was one of those students who tinkered about with things and built machinery. She guessed Yojin and Red had kinda er… eclipsed that ‘niche’ in her mind and she never really questioned what the other students worked on. She felt a little bad about that now…
“I used to be like that in my first year. I had a habit of staying up late watching anime myself and I wasn’t used to burning my energy throughout the day… being on the hero course QUICKLY whips that habit out of ya.” She let out a chuckle as she remembered how hellish her first year had been before her cardio training really kicked in. “I’m… almost hoping I might be able to get back into that habit once I get used to hero work, get a few quiet patrols. I have like 2 years of good anime to catch up on.” Of course anime wasn’t more important than her training, but it was worth a chuckle.~
She wondered for a moment if she should generally try and hang out with the support kids more, they were an important part of the school but she was realizing just how little she knew about them. She’d met Jisa a few times meeting him for morning runs, she’d only really brushed into Yojin and now Charlie was proving how little she knew about any of them… “Well little miss crafty-“ She teased at her comment of ‘finding a way’. “What have you been up to lately? Any big projects?”

late night prawn CHARLIE SPOKE WITH A NERVOUS ENERGY, compelled by Yumi’s polite interest to offer responses. Conversation. Yeah, Charlie totally had this under control. No sweat.
Yumi’s own lack of familiarity with her neighbor was honestly at no fault of her own—the prawn led a relatively secretive life. She was quiet by nature, and found pursuing her ideas far more exciting than sharing them with others. It sort-of… minimized the disappointment if one of the plans flopped.
And Charlie certainly wasn’t as prodigal as Yojin, Red, or Haruuhi. With kids whose tech could level the entire playing field, things like adaptive tech were easily overlooked.
The prawn laughed in spite of herself when Yumi confessed that she, too, was a periodic night-owl, albeit to watch anime.
“Yeah, they do work you guys pretty hard,” Charlie agreed, recounting the hearsay from various hero-studies kids that crossed the threshold into the workshop. To think that heroes’ studies kids were so overworked that they couldn’t even watch anime. God, that was unthinkable. Charlie couldn’t even imagine having a program that occupied that much time.
Not that support studies was anybody, but her hours in the workshop were Charlie’s “hobby” so to speak.
The prawn relaxed marginally as Yumi resumed her questions, pertaining to Charlie’s own projects. Now there was a topic she could expound upon ad nauseam.
“So I, uh… mostly… work with “adaptive” tech,” Charlie explained, “So like… stuff that... helps people manage their quirks better, or uh, tech that interacts with a person’s quirk. Most recently, I uh, made a sword for Melody, I guess? It’s like… totally blunt when her quirk isn’t activated, but when she uses her quirk, she can channel water through these cartridges that, erm… basically allow her to use water to make a blade.”
It was probably one of her most ingenious designs, to date.
“I also, uh… made suits for the Haymaker twins. To help channel their quirks. They’re elementals.”
There were more creations, of course, but those were her two most recent ones. Not robots or wearable battle armor, by any means, just—devices.
“Stuff like that,” the prawn concluded modestly.

Yumi gave a half shrug at the comment of them being worked pretty hard on the hero course. It was true sure but it felt weird to admit it, it felt like… if she said yeah it felt like she was saying the hero course was harder than Charlie’s support course, and in truth she didn’t know how to compare the two. As much research as she did into theoretical uses of electricity and how charges should affect eachother and all of that, she wasn’t sure if she could ever handle the technical side of all the support gear she used. She had the brains to understand how it worked, sure, but to actually make it work? No, way out of her wheelhouse. It was like… you could understand, logically, how a TV worked. Didn’t mean you had any clue how to actually build one. “Ahhh… they work us hard enough.” Is all she managed to respond with, not wanting to entirely brush off the comment. She felt like she’d be pretending ‘nah it wasn’t really all that hard’ if she did which… it in no way was.
As Charlie got the chance to open up more about her own work Yumi leaned back on her hands to take that in and just listen. Her brow quirked up at the idea of ‘adaptive tech’ but as she explained it wasn’t quite what she expected. Still interesting though, of course! The title just hadn’t fitted with her expections of it. “So its adaptive in the way it ‘adapts’ to the influence of a quirk. Like weapons that are only really viable with a quirk’s input, or help channel a quirk, Kinda like my suit?” Seemed like an easy enough way to relate to the topic. “That’s pretty cool though… if I remember right Melody manipulates water through music right? Does it just provide water for her to channel or does the blade help somehow?” She hoped she was remembering Melody’s quirk, be embaressing if she was talking out her ass about it right now…
“The Haymaker twins?” She asked, not having had any experience with them personally, she may have to give them a poke or something though if they were elementals like her. “Any interesting challenges there?” She asked, clearly interested in her work at this point. It wasn’t even for show, with her needing tech for her own quirk stuff like this really hooked her.
