Post by Elise Von Eisenberg on Jul 11, 2020 14:00:47 GMT -4
Quietly she wandered along the corridors of the hospital, the occasional nod and friendly smile being given toward her colleagues and fellow doctors at the hospital. However, behind that calm exterior, the mind of Elise von Eisenberg was caught in a state of chaos, turmoil as one might call it. She had just finished her shift at the Public Safety Commission and had been forced to deal with a topic that caused her, by all means, a great deal of discomfort. It was the elections and polls that were conducted on a yearly base to decide the top heroes of Japan and the most promising students at the hero academy.
Although, if one was to ask Elise her opinion about it she would be lying if she said anything else that: bullshit.
It was a disgusting flaw in the hero program, and it only reaffirmed Elise's belief in that there was something fundamentally wrong with the program. As she ascended the staircase at the end of the corridor Elise made her way toward her destination, right past the warning sign that said that only staff was permitted beyond this point, all while allowing her thoughts to continue simmering in the back of her mind.
It was a problem she had quickly come to acknowledge during the second year within the hero academy, the fact that the fundamental aspects of the hero program were entirely disconnected from her belief of what a hero should be. There was no denying the fact she was naive and idealistic when it came to her view of what a hero should be, a reason why it was difficult for her to find likeminded individuals among the students.
What exactly is a hero? From her opinion: A hero is someone who is a role model for society. Someone who upholds themselves with a greater sense of virtuousness and shoulders responsibilities that by all means, people would call inhuman, after all, heroes were meant to be selfless, they were the saviors of fantasy stories and fairy-tales.
Although the reality had given her a rough wake up call. The truth was that heroism was commercialized. People started to care more about popularity, or about beating up the bad guys compared to the responsibilities they had. Heroes were those who aspired to protect the weak, to give them hope and courage to stand up to the despair villains induced into society.
It was because they were such paragons of virtue that Elise understood she could never be a hero, the day she realized she was willing to kill someone for the sake of ensuring her future at Tetsuko's side remained. To others Elise might had looked perfect, cliché even, but she was a flawed woman, and sometimes even a selfish human being.
She might had good intentions, but by all means she was someone who had followed a 'The end justifies the means' mindset, a thing her late mentor had noticed quite early. As Spymaster Elise would not hesitate to do things one might consider not heroic in the slightest, if it meant succeeding in her task. Perhaps it was for that reason that she would only act as Spymaster when it was truly needed. For now she could just remain herself, the Elise von Eisenberg that she wanted to be.
Unlocking the door Elise stepped onto the tiles of the rooftop, the gentle wind breeze brushing against her cheeks as she stepped toward one of the benches and took a seat.
Now one might be wondering why Elise had been thinking about such things, such topics like the hero program when she herself was no longer involved directly in the program. It was because... Elise was, at her core selfish and manipulative at times, and she refused to see her beloved Tetsuko's heroic nature become tainted by this popularity-focused mentality of the program.
It was why she had started to understand the importance that social standing carried. Being respected led to influence, and influence led to the ability to make change, without needing to use force or violence. Perhaps it was for that reason she had been thinking about the future, about how she could improve this flawed program.
She pulled out her phone from the pocket of her doctor coat and looked at the recent messages. As she had expected there was a certain degree of dissatisfaction among some of the heroes, but one in particular had drawn her attention for now. Witch Doctor, Nimue Nakahara was a medical inclined pro-hero. While they might had been equals in the medical field, she liked to consider the woman as a bit of a senior to her due to age and experience, but for today she had some special plans in mind. Opening the private message function she read her message anew:
Hello Nimue-senpai~ Congratulations on your placement on the hero rankings, it was well-deserved! Would you be available to visit Tokyo's hospital this weekend? I'll be waiting on the rooftop during lunch break on Saturday~ There are a few things I hope to discuss with you: Not just as a pro-hero, but also as a fellow doctor. Besides, some catching up will be healthy, don't worry I won't ask you to pay for a consultation~
Best wishes,
Elise.
And so she gazed at the sky up above, silently wondering about the plan she had in mind. It was daunting, far-fetched even and in all honesty, a plan she couldn't handle on her own. She would need help, and she believed one of the best persons to consult for this matter would be Nimue. Fortunately, it seemed she didn't need to wait long, because once the clock ticked to noon on her clock the sound of footsteps was hearable from a distance, suggesting that her guest was about to make her entrance!
Would this be one of those crazy ideas of hers that while ambitious, were too unrealistic to accomplish? or would it be the start of something truly legendary? Only time would tell...

Starting on Friday night, Nimue would spend her weekend at her boyfriends and god it had been a week. With the announcements of the top pro-hero list, which surprised her when looking at the results, the comment of Mikhail, it made her wonder what she was doing. She should stop focusing on what she wanted but focusing on what was better for everyone. She was apparently good at her job, that meant she could continue, that she should work on a better image on the outside, which was weird to consider if Japan already voted you as number one, but she hated how Mikhail was right at least somewhere in what he said. She moved a little closer to Giovanni as he still slept and looked up at him as she wondered. The reason why the words Mikhail had said bothered her was that why would heroes keep attacking each other? That whole popularity contest made them work against each other, it showed vanity and maybe stupidity, while all their goals were the same. Weren't they there to ignore the fame and just protect the people, their friends and colleagues at that moment with Mia? She remembered Mikhail not accepting her there either. She knew she made decisions based on the heart but also with her knowledge and they couldn't be all known yet in two years, not even him or anyone else. Another fact to why it hurt was how he said it, had she not been hurt enough and she gripped her pillow and pulled it closer to her face to not wake up the Italian. She had worked her butt off to the part she was probably overworked and emotional about everything because she was so tired and yet it wasn't enough. It would never be enough, she would never get him back after all.
She moved up slowly and trying to make no sound to make sure she did not wake up Giovanni. She softly kissed him on the cheek and moved to the edge of his bed and got up. She pulled a long-sleeved shirt over her tank top and boxers before moving into the hallway on the first floor and slowly going down to the kitchen and making a cup of tea. She leaned against the kitchen cabinets when she noticed her phone was still on the kitchen table, she would pick it up when her tea was done and she went to sit there and pull her phone and laptop close. She could work in the early morning when Giovanni still slept. It did not happen often but she had to work tonight so it was better to work at school stuff when she got the time.
At least the bulk load of making so many different biology classes had fallen away, she was glad for the opportunity. And to be honest for opening her mouth to Hatsumomo that at the beginning of the year that had been her idea but Vega came in. She gritted her teeth, better not say anything about that. She turned her phone screen up and noticed a message of Elise, that was a surprise. She read it about two times before she put her phone down and checked her appointments for today, nothing at the hospital, she was off, preparing her classes for the new class she was teaching, considering a first aid class but that could be moved to tomorrow as well. She did not see an issue but forgot to answer Elise as Giovanni showed up and she got distracted. With the appointment in mind though she worked in the morning on her classes and whatever else she needed to do for school to make sure biology was closed off and left to the new teacher.
She borrowed Giovanni's car or at least one of them to get to the hospital in Tokyo, it was a little easier than taking the train and she could park easily at the hospital so there was no issue about that either. She got inside, dressed maybe a little too casual with her summer dress in white and yellow and her hair up in a ponytail, but she had no work today anyway, so it should be fine. She got stopped and talked to by a couple of nurses, the receptionist and other doctors and tried to point out that she had an important meeting with Elise, it wasn't that everyone here knew about her alter ego, but it was damn annoying that they asked her opinion and she did not know what to say, another point to Mikhail then. Ugh, she still wasn't ready to ask him for advice. She ignored Ryuutaro Mori by moving around his floor with a very big bow and finally got up at the roof a little late.
She noticed the girl obviously there was no one else here and she gave a slow wave with a smile. "Hey, sorry I think I forgot to text back." That was a little silly but at least Elise was still here that meant she did not offend her for not replying then, that was something. She would look around before ending up standing next to Elise and look at the view this spot gave them. She had never been to the roof, it was something, funny to see how there were fences to protect from falling off, it was at least something good to consider. "Are you okay?" They both lost people and she wasn't sure if Elise was okay in the slightest about it, last they talked about a lot of things, it was quite a loaded conversation and yet here they were again. She really liked and appreciated Elise so this was going to be an okay conversation, even if Elise told her the same as Mikhail did, she would accept it from the girl or no, young woman. There was not much of an age difference between them and maybe they were not so different in general and she looked at Elise, but what was this conversation as friends maybe and colleagues be about?

Despite the thoughtful mood she found herself in, Elise still couldn't help but find herself smiling briefly at Nimue's arrival, for as much as the pro-hero was a teacher at the academy she used to attend, as much as she was someone Elise considered her senior in the medical field, the Eisenberg lass also considered Nimue a friend. "Don't worry about it~ I bet you hand your hands full~ and you still showed up, that is what counts."
The pink-haired woman nodded her head lightly at Nimue's concerned inquiry about her wellbeing, and while she stretched her arms lightly into the air she mused softly. "I could ask the same for you Nimue-senpai~ It must have stung a little, to see the flawed aspect of the hero program now that you stand at the figurative top of the pro hero rankings."
She smiled gently at Nimue as she continued. "I was on standby during the conversation Nezumi-chan participated in, do you remember our last conversation? About how the hero program is starting to feel like commerce? Now that you seen and experienced in, do you notice how this popularity concept only proves to be a detriment to the program? Rather than encouraging one another to improve, to work together and form a united front against the rising tide of villainy, we get our glorious peacekeepers to bicker and leer at each other with envy, competitiveness for the sake of fame and glory, overall it is quite troubling."
She sighed briefly, leaning back against the bench as she looked at the school nurse and hummed softly. "But nonetheless, my words to you were genuine, I truly believe you deserved the credit that you were due. But... does it not frustrate you to see your fellow heroes act like this?"
She went quiet for a bit, considering her next choice of words while giving Nimue an opportunity to reply. It was only afterward that she spoke. "Sometimes when a thing is flawed, you reshape it~ Which is, unfortunately, something beyond the reach of influence either of us has..." She hummed with a smile, the glint in her eyes suggesting she had something planned. "Which simply means we have to expand our sphere of influence~ Which brings me to an idea of sorts, after all if there is one field we both excel in, then it is by all means the medical field."
She leaned forwards slightly, her hand shifting out the tablet in her pocket and presented it to the woman. "It's a list of theories, concepts and ideas my father had in order to improve the medical healthcare for Quirkers, in particular, it provides treatments both for Quirkers and injuries caused by Quirks. But some of the ideas are flawed, a bit too unrefined to be truly considered a medical breakthrough. Which leads me to calling for you~"
She smiled at Nimue, and decided to play her cards. "This is how we will prove ourselves, by creating something that any other medical genius in the world would label outlandish, otherworldly or impossible. A medical breakthrough that will go down in the history books. Not only will we become a step closer to getting that influence we need to make people consider our words as important advice, but it will also help me get a step closer to upholding a promise I made to Tetsu..."
Her smile wavered a little as she continued. "Tetsu's mother her medical condition is by all means, complicated, and through some of those concepts my father was working on I hope to make her able to live a more normal life once more." She went quiet for a bit, pondering about the next part. "To be honest, I don't believe there is anyone else I could rely on to aid me in this research than you, after all I think we both want to do the same thing: Improving life for others, and protecting that which we hold dear at all costs. Of course, I did take some thoughts about the future~" She hummed the last bit like a trickster having a final surprise up her sleeve. "Considering Musutafu is the birthplace of the next generation of heroes, some who might have medical inclined interests, I was musing the idea of using our potential success--- no our 'future' success to press the idea of creating a Quirker focused hospital within Musutafu, a place you could have medical inclined students go for further education, or where those o so reckless students can receive finer treatment, on the surface it would be a step toward improving healthcare for Quirkers, but at the same time it will be a visible testimony to the things we accomplished."
Slowly rising onto her feet she hummed with a sheepish grin upon her lips. "But I imagine that this is a fair share of stuff to take in, so if you need some time to think about it, I wouldn't mind waiting for an answer." Of course there had to be more to it than just that, right? In the end, creating some groundbreaking medical breakthroughs, all for the sake of gaining more influence and creating a hospital in Musutafu? "I guess this would be the first step, to changing the flawed concept of the hero program, but for that to happen we need to become 'someone important', and I'm just a little bit too impatient till I became a grey colored slime grannie who finally garnered enough reputation to do such a thing. No, for us to improve things right here and now, we need to become special~ and I think becoming the 'Number One Doctor' would make for a nice partnership with the Number One Hero~"
She chuckled softly, a hand extended toward Nimue as she seemingly was expecting a handshake. "So Nimue-sensei~ Are you in for this crazy adventure I have in mind?" She could only pray that things would go according to her plans, else she would have to struggle with quite a major setback.

Her concern had always been for others. She herself wasn't at the top of her worry list, at the moment it was Giovanni, her students and other heroes and people she cared about such as G and Hanako and his children. She did not want to think about herself too much, which was why she asked Elise if she was okay. Her face looked worried but maybe it was just being in thought that she was considering what to do or say. Her question surprised Nimue, she wasn't sure if many people actually asked how she was doing or always considered her happy or maybe worse even naive. She hated that people thought she was that, she wasn't blind, she was only trying to pick the positive side, if you did not, then nothing will be considered a small victory or something to satisfy you. Yes, she was busy but she was always too busy to consider herself and she gave an empty or more hollow laugh to Elise. Obviously her friend would understand what such a sound meant without having to utter the words of disappointment. "I would lie if I said it didn't hurt and I would lie even more if I said that it was fine and nothing to worry about." He might have been jealous, overcompetitive because of his own nature or because of his mentor but the words hurt. Should she quit had been a question she wondered about just a little over six months ago, something she had shared with Elise at that time and look at her now, number one hero and still unhappy. But she had decided she would stay and she would definitely do so. She nodded, it made sense that Elise had seen it when Nezumi did and that their last conversation was linked to it, so she nodded again.
"I had not expected last year to be ranked third, you may know that us healers aren't the most popular, we are not flimsy, we are not in the spotlight and we do what is necessary. Mia is better in the power moves than I am but that did not mean I sat still. I feel bad for the negative comments she got for her medical condition, the people do not know what happened or how hard she tried to fight it but most of all..." She was disappointed in the slashing of just something she believed she had no influence in. She did not do interviews, she did not go out there to be the great and famous Witch Doctor, she went out there to stop villains from killing and hurting others and yet... yet they cared about her in public, about her imagine and call her out for that. What did they expect her to do. Maybe she should stand up more for herself and walk over to Mikhail and tell him right in the face what kind of ass he had been. She lifted up her phone, not looking directly at the message but the I apologize at the end of his sentence had felt whimsical, not necessary, just words he added to look good. But she did not say that, "And," she continued, "I had hope that we were all in it for the same. But we are not, and it is clear. I don't want the title, of course, I am honoured I got it, but that doesn't change me for being me or me doing my job." Maybe she was slightly afraid she would do so, Elise was the most neutral person she talked to about it, as she tried to avoid to talk about it. Giovanni had been so proud but well he was an outsider when it came to the system and she just accepted his congratulations, his gifts and all, but it did not make her feel better after what was said.
She looked at the floor underneath her feet, the neat tiles that said nothing. "Thank you, I am glad people see that work, I am just disappointed it comes with such backlash from colleagues because... that is what it was, isn't it? Hachi is right though, maybe people appreciate those that keep up a sort of hidden persona, no private sharing instead of those that do but what does it matter? Isn't our goal not to just get rid of all those villains and protect the people as best as we could?" She actually did not want to talk about it, but the words tumbled out and she felt like crying, "I lost my father, does that not count for something? It hurt so much to be called... to be seen as..." She could not finish the words, Elise would know the feeling, she lost the same as she did. Thanks to the hands of that Kobayashi clan. Why was there no respect for your fellow hero, for your colleague or even better: for another human being?
A tear found its way over her left cheek as she held herself and took a deep breath. Looking up from the perfect tile pattern of the floor when Elise spoke again. She nodded, they did excel together in the medical field. She looked at the tablet that Elise offered to her, Von Eisenberg's work? Really? She listened but looked mostly surprised and stared at it, she had been working hard on that as well, for the students mostly but that did not mean it was only limited to U.A. Her mouth fell open listening to the smart young woman that Elise had always been in Nimue's eyes and she could say nothing. But she felt like crying, that was the dream, wasn't it? Making it better, stopping those people from pointing and making matters worse and she nodded from time to time, albeit lightly, easy to miss, she did not cry yet but she was on the brink. She could not move, it took a bit but when Elise extended her hand and finished speaking about the number one doctor and number one hero, Nimue took her hand, with a hoarse voice and yet a smile she said, "Silly, do you expect me to say anything else but yes? This is it. This is what I was hoping for but I had no time to consider how, what you suggest and the ideas of your father, that is a brilliant start. I cannot wait to see what our future brings before we are old and fragile, we will do it now."

Elise nodded her head, a slightly worried and understanding expression upon her visage as she listened to Nimue's worries and doubts. "You're entirely correct, and in a way I am glad that this wakeup call made you realize the direness of the situation." Indeed, it was a harsh truth, while as individuals they might had been pleasant or interesting in their own ways, take for example Serperior or Red Horn, she genuinely believed they were starting to lose track of something important. She still remembered how Mia had complained about being compared to Blue Agate, and for a while it made Elise chuckle inwardly, in a way that tie had been something symbolic to her.
"It's a sad truth Nimue-" She dropped the honorific to show how serious the topic had become. "Ask most of your colleagues and most will give flowery words or state the answers we aren't looking for: What is a hero? I always firmly believed those who hold the title of hero shouldn't consider it a job, it's a calling. There is no denying that popularity aid in gaining the trust of the people, but by all means it isn't a priority. What is the purpose of a hero is to aid the people in any way you can, and your colleagues are first and foremost that: partners, and only afterwards they are rivals."
She chuckled for a moment. "When Mia declared her disdain for being compared to Blue Agate, I was genuinely amused. I won't deny that her actions during her rampage were out of her hands, but does she even realize that it is a wonder that she still possesses a hero license? The amount of paperwork and coverups the Public Safety Commission had to do to ensure there wouldn't be riots? Nezumi went as far as pulling three all-nighters in a row, to the point I had to ask if she planned to get a coffee transfuse to keep working~ She truly is the coverup queen."
But the fact remained, that some of them were going too lightly over their own actions. "With great power comes even greater responsibility, and heroes have some of the greatest responsibilities a person could have." And until the day where she could make it clear to society about how important it was to keep in mind that being called a hero was a privilege that came with its responsibilities, she would have to struggle to make her opinion understood.
"Hachi-sensei isn't entirely wrong, those who separate their private life from the media often end up developing this 'feeling', like... When you hear the name Witch Doctor people immediately know the benevolent yet just and determined healer who would do her utmost to aid and protect the weak, but the name doesn't directly connect with Nimue Nakahara, right? It's quite similar in the idol industry, people like the feeling that they are more... perfect than others, they want to see the hero, without necessarily acknowledging the person, even if they are doing themselves a disservice~"
When Nimue shook her hand Elise's smile brightened, a firm nod being given in return. "It might not solve all our problems at once, but it is a powerful start: Not just in order for us to improve things within the hero society, but also in order to ensure that we can, and will improve life for those who can't protect themselves. After all, heroes and doctors are both heroes~" She gave Nimue a playful wink and gestured toward the door where the staircase leading back into the hospital was waiting for them.
"I look forward to working with you partner~ For our first concept I actually been brainstorming one of the fundamental basic ideas my father had for a treatment in the form of pharmaceutical remedies." As she waited for Nimue to look at the tablet, Elise carefully guided her back into the hospital.
"Currently Quirk usage for most things require specific regulations, permissions and licenses and such. However, some quirks tend to possess such beneficial effects that in most cases it would be essential for us to learn to use them in the medical field. Some examples would be Melody-chan's healing water, Angelica-chan's healing candies, or indeed my own body and fluids. I have been considering the concept of extending the lifespan of such 'Quirk Medicine', some options involve giving it treatment like freezing it slightly in a fridge, basically improving the conditions to preserve it, but one major issue remains that for most Quirks, regeneration is also debilitating since our Quirks are recognized as foreign substances by the human body. In my case, I can actively adjust my Quirk to be compatible with a person's body if I got enough data, but there remains the issue that it is something I can only do while actively treating people."
She sighed softly, scratching the back of her neck lightly while musing softly. "I been trying to think of how we can adapt our medicine to also function on others without the negative downside of the human body trying to counter our treatment. We can't expect to manually treat each dosage for every individual patient, it needs to be something that can apply to everyone. Some sort of missing ingredient within the medical stew so to speak~ And unfortunately I tend to leave the cooking to Tetsu."
Elise chuckled briefly as they started to descend the stairs, seemingly on the way to one of the floors of the hospital, in particular the office that Elise could proudly call her own. Still, it was a good start, to know she had Nimue aiding her in brainstorming those ideas, after all there were some things a person couldn't do by themselves, and she believed that by working alongside her, the two would finally be able to find the answers that till now had always been out of reach for her. "Hmm... something to make the medicine compatible with every single human body in the world..."

There was so much to consider all the time, it would never stop but it would also never become better if they were not going to try and improve it. The question was, of course, how much could you improve all by your lonesome or even as a duo, but that did not mean that they should not try? She wasn't even sure if it was a wake-up call in the sense of the word or that she came to the point that she could no longer ignore it. If this was her job as the new top... well then at least give her some goal to consider in this year or how long they would accept her on that list and she would just munch on her lip, chewing softly while she listened and thought. She felt a mental stone in her stomach with the names she mentioned. Mia would understand but maybe not so much, she wasn't sure but it did not look nice that Mia was complaining about Junko, Nimue liked them both, they were very different but still, why was it a competition?
It was the sad truth and she did not want to think about it while they sat there on the bench and she thus looked away. She was not sure if she herself had ever answered the question right but she had the same intention as Elise had, that she knew. She did not see them as partners, not all of them at least, surely there had to be some and she was just so grumpy about it. She remembered their talk about vigilantes but G was far more respectful than Mikhail at this point was to her. Maybe she should also talk to G again, she had been busy but she wanted to make sure his family was fine. No, not now, she was talking to Elise about this issue. Nimue shook her head and tried to focus on what she was saying. She knew about Mia's issue, that's why she had gone there from the hospital, she had promised to protect Mia and maybe it worked but maybe it didn't but Mikhail had been an ass there as well. Why did he make it seem he can do everything perfectly but always criticize others. She took a deep breath, he probably had his own issues and was taking it out on others, she shouldn't directly blame him for it. She looked back at Elise as she explained what Hachi meant and she nodded, "Isn't that the idea though? That's what I try, I want my privacy, I want to protect Giovanni but I don't want to disappoint the people. I just don't see that they want to know me, they want to know her, Witch Doctor." She could basically make up a whole new story as long as it worked for the people and she remained to do the same.
She took the tablet from Elise after they shook hands on the plan and let Elise guide her silently back inside the hospital and to probably Elise her office, though they could go to the small lab that Nimue now occupied in the west wing. She had clearly understood her father's research and had done her personal investigation, Nimue watched where she stepped before turning her attention back to Elise. The people she mentioned were an intern and an apprentice that Nimue guided so that was something to think about. Though her working together with Melody was new and she wanted to push the water girl a little more to understand her power and the importance of it. She made a soft snorting sound when Elise joked about the cooking, "I agree, I leave that to Giovanni." But this was not the time for jokes and she looked through the research again. "We sort of need to be able to have it like blood group O, available for everyone or AB and O together, that might be safer but the combination of the abilities with such a thing, that is something to study." Where would the failure of such things happen? What would medicine need, she knew a lot and the blood results worked a lot with that and she could study with the blood samples of at least three quirkers and probably more from the school and her colleagues if only she could ask. "It would be something of a dream to work and gain a license for quirk use at the work floor. It is the reason I became a hero too so to say, because I couldn't use my healing power without the permission of the government at the time, a hero was the only option." She had been lucky that her professor at the time wasn't opposed to quirks and she was given this opportunity.
Would the blood work for a starter? A start to find a better way to make it even lower and make it one compatible version for everyone no matter what quirk or blood type? That would be the most ideal situation and she wandered almost aimlessly if Elise wouldn't guide her to her office. She tried to think of more ways, maybe neurological it would have an explanation on why the brain would no longer see it as an intruder but she wasn't a brain surgeon, Elise was closer to home when it came to that, so it was definitely something to research.

Nimue had a point: there was a lot to consider. After all if they left the hero program the way it was right now, then it was unlikely anything would change. It was only by taking initiative and making the effort to change things, that they could try to improve the nature of the program. Of course, the question that Nimue posed herself made sense: How much would they be able to change? Elise wasn't entirely sure of that either. Considering the hero program's regulations were primarily done by the Hero Oversight Committee, it was evident it would take time, effort and influence in order to reach that point. But that didn't mean that Elise didn't want to try to improve things: as long as there was a possibility, she would end up trying.
Neither was she the type to suggest it without a backup plan. She planned to approach the principal of the hero academy also: Trying to convince Touma of the importance of having Quirked individuals who were capable of doing the job of a pro hero but were far more disciplined and focused on the mission rather than their personal reputation. Although she liked Mia as a person, Elise had to admit that as a hero? She had her flaws, then again everyone had flaws, but she did get why her rankings had dropped.
A hand raised to her cheek as Elise pondered about the state of things. There was a certain rift between the heroes, something that made it difficult for them to cooperate at times. It reminded Elise of one of the flaws of the hero program. In a way it was a system that was meant to encourage heroes to become well-liked by the public, but for many, it would become a priority... they took too much importance in those elections... "Indeed, in a way the public sees you as Witch Doctor, rather than Nimue Nakahara, that is one of the similarities between the hero program and the idol industry as an example."
A brief smile lingered on her lips at Nimue's response to her joke, yet the focus soon returned back to the research. "It's not impossible..." She recalled the events of when Thunder Shock poisoned the hero academy's water supply and the way they had discovered the solution. "In the past I experienced something similar: I collaborated with a former student of the academy in developing a cure against a virus of sorts that spread around the school. Her quirk involved being able to manipulate the properties of her blood. If we were to obtain the collaboration of someone with similar properties, we could alter the medicine with it..."
She pondered out loud as they reached her office, and upon opening the door she guided Nimue inside, moving over to her desk where she had prepared several documents. "Hmm... but we'd have to find a Quirker who is capable of doing this, and willing to collaborate- unless..." She peered at the documents and mumbled softly. "The human body is made up out of a large part of water, an alternative would be to get Melody to infuse the medicine with her water, as a liquid solution her quirk should be able to neutralize the properties that make the human body consider it a foreign substance."
She nodded her head a few times and mused softly. "Although... as the school nurse of the hero academy you do possess access to the medical supplies of the school. If I recall right Rin Kurama had stored some vials of her blood in the nurse office, if they are still there we could work on replicating them."
Blood and water, she wasn't sure if it would work, but they had to start somewhere~

Having Elise listen to her woes and agreeing made it a little easier. The fact that she always saw it as two people being, in the end, the same, did not mean that the public wanted to know both of them. They wanted Witch Doctor and that was it. The fact that some people seemed to be doing this for the fame made her a little scared of her position, but she wasn't the only one high on that list and with Hachi by her side, she was sure it was going alright. She looked up to the ceiling as they were now inside and wondered if Hachi was doing alright. But she did not want to invade her privacy, she wasn't sure if they were friends or simply colleagues as they both were so busy, they never really talked. However, she knew that Hachi was loved a lot by the students, she remembered that day, last year when she got wounded too and returned to school only for their conversation to be abruptly stopped because of two support students almost in tears that their beloved teacher came back. Who knows, maybe one day she had a class of her own that cared that much. But that was now not the point, the point was that she felt flattered for this invitation Elise gave her and she listened and considered what to do too.
Nimue had not been at U.A. yet at the time of the QED water or how they called it. Obviously she had heard of it and she knew exactly who Elise was talking about. That girl was missing or so Hatsumomo had told her. She nodded, not wanting to say it out loud, she never really was satisfied with her relationship with Rin, not entirely getting what the girl was aiming at, but being a high ranked doctor and being a hero student and Nim had been worried about it and look at her now, trying to do also those two things at the same time. But they did not have that quirk in her hands, they had different proportions and she listened, "I could bring it up, Melody is my apprentice since recent happenings." But they have not met up yet so the chances were small Melody knew at this point but she would get the information soon and she would follow Elise into her office and take the seat she had about seven months ago too. How strange and how quickly the world changes.
She wasn't sure if medicine would work in the water of the human being, but it might be able to be the carrier that neutralized the idea of the medicine and the quirked stuff they would want to make, but that was something to consider. "I don't know where they left them but I am sure they did not throw them out so there might be a way to find them." She said but not entirely feeling okay with that idea, only cuz Hatsumomo said she was missing and that it had hit Jasmine hard, and then they were just casually going to research the blood. "But maybe I could get a vial. WE should try to find other blood quirkers. But she had no idea where Ketsueki was either. She should pay more attention to such information things, really.

Elise nodded her head in agreement to Nimue's words. "Thank you~ I appreciate it a lot since I don't know Melody-chan that well yet." Meanwhile as she pondered about the situation with Rin, Elise listened attentively to the school nurse's opinion. "You're right, although it is difficult to find Quirkers who fit the specific profile, however, should we succeed in finding a donor, something to base our sample on, then replicating it would be simple enough." Indeed, the reason Rin's blood was so valuable was because it contained adaptability, in essence making it that given the right situation, they could alter other blood to match the same properties as that of Rin. Essentially it followed a concept similar to cloning theories.
"I think it's best that I figure out a way to contact Jasmine, maybe she might know something, and she deserves to know our objective for the samples. That aside, do you think there is anyone among the students at the academy right now that would have the potential or interest in learning the medical field?"
It was a soft musing as she leaned back in her chair. "That aside, if we were to succeed, and create this 'medicine that can be replicated over and over again', what would you do with it? People likely would offer you millions for it."
A trivial question, and since she knew the answer already it was pretty much a jest. "I do admit that the Red Horn rampage made me realize the difference... it's hard to describe but compared to the riot unit I guided during my work in the Public Safety Commission, the people in the field during that event felt less tight, it didn't feel like a 'team'. You were there Nimue, do you believe that you were acting as a squad back then?"

She did not want to make things awkward or make it bad but she knew she could count on Elise when it came to that and she was sure it would be fine and she nodded, therefore. She could talk to Melody when their apprenticeship tasks would happen and she would be able to ask her about her goals, besides with her future job as the 1-S homeroom teacher, she could also figure out who wanted to be focused on first aid. To have a job next to being a hero was exactly what she wanted to give those children and she wanted to make sure they were okay with it and felt supported. "I know, it just feels a bit... a bit strange but that does not mean that we shouldn't try." She was a little more relieved when Elise suggested that she would contact Jasmine about it and she nodded, yes, that would make her feel better. She did not know much about Jasmine but she did not want to bypass the girl in something so important. She wasn't that far with blood properties, but she had a study on it thanks to the M.A.R.I.N.E. research and the research she had done from some quirks as a result on their blood, such as the plasma she had seen in Jack's blood. "I am hundred per cent sure we have some." She held up her hand with five fingers already, "There is Jisatsu, though he is more focused on first aid and I showed him the emergency room here where he would like to work when he is done graduating," She lowered one finger, "There is Yasashi from the second years, he has some struggles as he thinks his quirk is made for combat but he really would like to study medicine, he interns with me and I plan to bring him to the hospital next time to show around what I do and what he can do too. He told me already that he wants to study medicine. There is Angelica, I don't know if you have met her but she is another second year, sister of Chimera and she has a quirk that makes medicine like ice pops. It might be worth to bring her in the discussion and see what her quirk could do for this now that I think about it. Then you have Kumoko, she is a little clumsy but she is very kind and very patient to help people, she has a spider head so it scares people off but well I have noticed up to now that she knows perfectly well how to deal with it and people forget it very quickly. And you have Honey, squirrel mutation second year who realized that she wants to be a disaster relief support student and she is now really focused on trying to learn first aid and work with it, she is a little scatterbrained but I am sure she works well when she gets her focus on." And she thought a bit more, those were the ones that interned with her, "The first years, I am sure a few are interested and have healing quirks but I can't say it yet without asking them but we will see next year as they can intern."
She was at least glad to say that she got up to five and Melody but well she was already mentioned and she wasn't sure if the girl wanted to focus more on medicine than just her healing capability. Then there were still Ray and Danica, that showed an interest in healing during their rescue mission but she wasn't sure about that yet. "Maybe the two transfers from Canada, Danica and Ray, but I will soon bring them around on the volunteer work I do for quirkers and the doctor's organisation so maybe I can tell you more after."
But Elise next question surprised her, "And get the patent on it and sell it for millions to the people? No. I don't need to become rich, I just need to be able to live my life comfortable enough. I am sick of those big beings that have medicine but don't use them because they want money out of it. They had cancer medicine in 2020 but no one could afford them, so what is the point in making medicine, it should go to the people for a reasonable price." She looked away, it agitated her more than she wanted to admit. Though that was mostly Europe and especially America and she had felt that in Africa, the health care system in Japan worked pretty well, so she should maybe not worry too much about it. But with a sheepish smile she looked at Elise, "You wanted to make sure I did it for the right cause right?"
She shook her head when the question came, "No we bickered as we all had another focus on how to fix it. I wanted to make sure we did not hurt Mia, but obviously the others had other ideas." As Freya had kicked Mia in the face.

Elise chuckled softly and nodded her head gently. "Never forget those feelings Nimue: We do this because we want to help people, not because we want to get rich out of it. It's because of those kind and pure feelings of yours that I respect you so much, both as a doctor and as a hero." She smiled softly as she nodded her head in affirmation to Mia's answer to her question.
"A lack of discipline, no leadership to follow, traditional disorder within a program that lacks a chain of command." She mused softly, thinking further on the matter till she started to grab the digital pen and scribe onto the tablet. "So we got a healthy share of students who might be interested in the medical field."
She paused for a moment, looking to the tablet. "About Mia by the way, were you able to extract the drug from her samples? Building a vaccine might be a good idea if we got a villain on the loose that is able to make people go berserk." Of course it was important for both of them to look beyond just this mission they had started, as one could easily say that the two of them were key figures within Japan's medical world currently."

She wanted to make a joke about getting rich about it, that she would have Giovanni for that too but she didn't want to say it out loud as it sounded horrible. She did not like how he paid everything for her and on the other hand, it was wonderful and it was more wonderful because it made them able to do things that she normally wouldn't be able to do. Or go to places such as Disney World for her birthday, that would not have happened with her own salary. Yes, maybe it would work with her own salary if she wasn't spending it on researching things and buying a lot of magazines to keep up with the studies and she gave again a little shy smile, yea she got it. She nodded though, yea, she would in case they needed money ask Giovanni though, to support them or at least the start, though she hated the idea she was sure he did not mind. Considering he bought the gifts for the kids in the orphanage and so on. He was a good man. She blushed a little, "Thanks, I am glad we have met, I don't think I would have stand a chance all by myself in such a world but you are a motivation and inspiration, Elise." She also dropped the formalities but she was really curious to how this would work.
She would nod to the statements that Elise made about the issue at Mia's rampage. She still felt bad for her friend who tried so hard and that she fell, but she should let go of a popularity contest, they did it for the people and well she was still there and not fired and that was what counted. She continued with the next question and mentioned five names that she was sure of and then Melody, Danica and Ray. She needed to figure them out and they still had the first year students. "After the summer holiday, I have the intention to hold first aid classes, so I can see who shows up and ask them what their plan is." Surely there were other students with first aid, and good at it, such as Yumi but she wasn't sure if it was Yumi's goal to end up in the hospital and she actually assumed not with all the other work the student seemed to do but maybe she would ask another time.
She thought about the Mia berserk question, "I think it was a new form of QED, but I have her blood and I think they took blood samples of her after, so I could see if there is a difference in there and maybe ask Mia and Sophie if they figured something out as well, I send Mia to Sophie, she is a biologist, to discover more than just the physical part of the rampage." She thought about it, if they could do that, maybe they could fine-tune the works of the M.A.R.I.N.E. medicine, but that would be a harsh research again and tiring and painful. But she could maybe ask Sophie for this new research too, maybe she had suggestions.

Elise smiled gently at Nimue's words of gratitude, the dropping of her formality being something Elise appreciated immensely. After all she was someone who usually only tended to be formal during her work and preferred to be more casual and friendly outside of those hours. Of course, as the topic went on toward the end of the vacation, Elise chimed in return. "That's a good idea, there can always be students who might care about others, who want to help their loved ones but don't know where to start. I'm sure your lessons will motivate them into seeing the usefulness of the medical field."
"A biologist? That makes sense, I hope she has been able to discover some sort of clue about it." After all, despite her harsh opinion she did consider Mia a friend, and wanted to avoid the risk of a repeat of events. "For now I think that's the best thing we can do on that front, although the research will take some time, I'd suggest that we focus on bolstering our support in the meanwhile: While you check with the students you mentioned, I'll focus on approaching Jasmine and see if I can pull some strings to take a peek at the Quirk register to see if there is anyone that might match the profile we need for this research."

She was glad to hear and see Elise happiness in their conversation. She really liked the girl and it was good in the sense that she wasn't her student anymore so they could drop the formalities. "I agree, and it would be a shame to only give first aid classes to the support students as who knows who else is interested in them and we shouldn't limit it. That being said I might change from biology teacher to become the 1-S homeroom teacher, but it's still in the works." Especially after she laid down to Hatsumomo and the Principle how much work she had from biology, the hospital and being the school nurse and this would give her more time to put effort into making first aid classes. So that would work out well and it was only going to get better if she would be able to do more of what she liked to do, the class trips, the organisation of other moments and who knows, it would only go better that way. She was actually quite convinced of it and she had introduced an interesting candidate for biology classes to the school, so that might help as well.
Nimue nodded, rubbing her chin while thinking about it, she should ask Sophie, it was something to consider. "Good idea, that seems to be something. But I have a question, so what I got from you, the intention is to work on a new more quirk focused hospital, which sounds like a good idea. We definitely would need to talk about licenses and all but how are we going to even start financing this research and that idea? I know all my money goes into buying medical magazines but it is not much." She did not want to say she might have a sponsor but she could also ask Giovanni what he thought about it and so on, and consider what else they could do. It was something very important, she could maybe even talk to Deguchi to do a good word for them as the Mayor or Politician of Japan's social class, and especially as a quirker and most of all: as Nimue her friend. She was sure that with how interested she was in supporting U.A. that this would be a nice cherry on the top and that it would be something to consider, at this point Nimue would just see and hear out Elise more.

The financial aspect of their plan was indeed something that needed to be discussed. Although Elise earned a fair amount of money thanks to her career as a surgeon on top of her work for the Public Safety Commission and a famous musician, it was not exactly an amount where she could fund all this research and the construction of an entire hospital on their own. Elise raised a hand to her cheek, pondering quietly. "A good point to consider, I don't really know the right people who would be willing to fund our endeavors, and until we get a noticeable development within our research I don't think the government will be willing to fund us either." Indeed, the government would want to see results before they would be willing to take such a risk, but perhaps... "Would you happen to know anyone who might be willing to contribute?" Of course Nimue was someone with more experience than her, and likely had a healthy share of connections within her own network also, so it certainly was a idea to see if Nimue herself might know anyone who was able, and willing to fund their research and the construction of the Quirker hospital.
