Natsu's first day of school sure is something else. Everybody was gawking at him. Well, more correctly, they were staring at his burns. Natsu expected the kids to do so, but not the teachers and the hushed "don't stare" kinda made Natsu feel out of place among everybody here, let alone his quirk. The flames wanted to come out and wreak havoc due to Natsu's anxiety shooting skywards at this point. But he kept his calm and his fire down.
And the whole introduction to his class didn't go as well either. When he got brought into the classroom, everybody went dead silent as they stared at him-making feel more of a freak. Natsu subconsciously covered his face with his hand by pretending to fix his dry frazzled hair, trying to hide the shame of being different. Natsu kept his head lowered and looking away from those staring at him as the teacher introduces him. That his name is Natsu Fuyuko and then asked for an introduction from him, which Natsu bit his bottom lip as he politely bowed to his class and said in a soft and polite voice-"Hello, I am Natsu Fuyuko, I hope we can be friends," His response was silence. Deafeningly so. Natsu was then awkwardly guided to his seat, where he silently did at his requested assignment as he heard nearby kids whisper amongst themselves no doubt about him. Who was could they be talking about when they stuff like "Dangerous quirk" or "punk" or even "ugly scars."
By the time Lunch started, Natsu wanted to go home and never come back here. But Natsu kept moving forward and got his homemade lunch from Finn-his first-ever homemade lunch he wouldn't admit it aloud, but it was his first bright point today. Especially to Finn. But Natsu didn't want to eat with the other kids. They made him nervous. So instead, Natsu went to the school roof away from the crowds and was at first glad when he didn't see anybody, but the disappointment raised when he saw a dark-haired boy alone up here. But Natsu took in a breath of air before walking over to the kid and asking him politely with a polite smile on his scarred face. "Hello, I'm new here, would you mind if I sit here with you?" Natsu wasn't sure if this kid was in his homeroom or not, they looked a bit plain. But he kept that to himself. Natsu hoped the kid says yes, he doesn't want to wander the whole school looking for a place to sit.

of copycats and flames YUKI LIKED WHEN THEY GOT NEW KIDS, for the express purpose that it got attention off of him for a change. The hazing usually lasted a few days, while the other students assessed whether or not the new kid was worthy of being “one of us” or “one of them”. If you were one of us you’d join in making Yuki’s (and the other Weird Kids’) lives miserable. If you were one of them you’d either be ignored or subjected to whatever torment the cool kids chose for that day.
And this New Kid? New Kid had some pretty wicked scars. Totally bad-ass, in Yuki’s humble opinion. But if they were anything short of an absolute hellion, odds were that they were another “Weird Kid” in the making. And, wouldn’t you know it, New Kid—more commonly known as “Natsu Fuyuko”—was very soft-spoken.
RIP him.
Wasn’t Yuki’s problem, though. Yuki just kept his head down, and it usually worked for him. Until he opened his know-it-all mouth, anyways.
Lunch rolled around, and Yuki took his backpack—bento box included—and headed for the roof. It was decently quiet up there—small groups of nerds discussing whatever game they were interested in this week, delinquents smoking behind the stairwell, and a collection of loners sitting out of earshot of one another. No bullies, though. Most of the bullies were down in the yard defacing and otherwise destroying school property, or roughing some miserable soul up for money.
Yuki sat cross-legged on the ground, eating in small, modest bites. He wore a pair of fingerless gloves to protect his palms from the genetic residue that his mom had left on the bento box, his eyes carefully downcast. On one knee, some index cards were balanced, held in-place by a single split-ring.
Yuki would take a bite, look at the index card, and after some pensive chewing, flip the card over and look at the back. He appeared to be studying for a test.
He heard the person approaching before he saw them—and only because he kept his eyes pointed towards the ground. Only one person.
Yuki lifted their gaze. His irises lingered somewhere between orange and yellow.
“If you want to, sure,” the teen said, returning his gaze to his bento box. He stabbed at some rice, attempting to gather it into a neat little pile, before taking a bite.
“Should warn you,” Yuki said flatly, without looking up again, “Sitting with me on your first day is like… social suicide. Not a lot of people like me. You could do better.”
Yuki reached for their index cards, turned to the next one, continuing to study. If the warning didn’t cause the new kid to clear-out, Yuki would lift their gaze, now somewhere between yellow and green.
“Well?”

Natsu has always been a more soft-spoken and weary person when it comes to those he doesn't know. So Natsu had expected to be ignored by the other boy, instead, the plain-looking boy looked up at him with bright eyes. And Natsu couldn't help, but stare at his eyes for a brief moment before listening to the boy's words, saying hanging out with him was social suicide, Natsu let out a small sigh and said, "I don't think I ever had a chance." It wasn't sad or angry, sounded more resigned than anything else. Natsu had expected as much when he moved here. But didn't think it'd be so fast.
Natsu had frankly expected the boy to tell him to leave. Instead, he asked him "well" as he waited for his choice-his eye now a different color then it was before, Natsu blinks once-twice taking note of the shift in eye color, but he quietly nodded his head as he took a seat next to the boy, a safe distance away if his quirk goes haywire. Natsu sat cross-legged on the ground- despite it being a nice sunny day today- Natsu shivered with a chill running down his spine, sis quirk needed to burn something, it's been acting up all day, must be all the stress.
Natsu without a word started opening up his Bento box and saw that it was filled to the brim with spicy food, Natsu blinks once-twice-thrice, Finn listened to his favorite foods, But Natsu shakes his head and took a bite out of the bento box-and it was spicy excessively so-how he likes his food. Natsu started digging into the food as he enjoyed the intense heat warming up his inside- and despite it being a few hours old was still warm.
Natsu listed up one of the still warm octopus cut sausages and activated his quirk, it was only a flicker, but the other boy would see that Natsu's fingertips were covered in an inky black flame. But instead of charring- the sausage froze over with frost and once all the heat was all absorbed from the meat, Natsu flicked the piece of meat with his thumb and middle finger to flick the meat across the roof which made the clicking sounds of ice hitting cement.
Natsu felt better- a lot of his tension eased and he felt better already-it wasn't much of a meal for cool flame-but it was good enough for now. Since that was the last of Natsu's lunch he set aside the bento box, and he pulled his chilly legs up to his chest as the heat started to return to his limbs after feeding his quirk.
Natsu without looking up from between his knees asked the boy, "You have a quirk too, don't you, is that why they don't like you? frankly a little too bluntly but he was already socially an outcast, so how lower can he go at this point? If he makes enemies of the outcasts then he could at least keep everybody safe distances away from him.

of copycats and flames THE BRUNETTE AWAITED THE NEW KID'S RESPONSE. And when the New Kid admitted that he never had a chance, anyways, the corner of Yuki’s mouth twitched.
“Hm,” Yuki rumbled approvingly, returning to his index cards. New Kid took his seat beside the brunette. Yuki took another bite of his lunch. His food was… decidedly bland, compared to the selection New Kid boasted. Rice, grilled chicken, edamame, egg, and a small dessert. There was a thermos near his knee, presumably containing a beverage.
A silence settled, and the brunette made no attempt to break it—he really needed to study for this quiz, and he suspected that once New Kid figured-out that Yuki was some anti-social nerd, they’d leave him alone.
A scratchy sound tickled at Yuki’s ears, and the teen looked up. Something distorted the New Kid’s fingertips, a bit of flame.
“Ah, watch out-!” Yuki hissed, not at-first processing that this was the work of a quirk. He watched as the flame, rather than burning the other teen (or the sausage), froze it… and the brunette’s expression went slack.
A… another quirker?
Bewildered, bright orange eyes followed the frozen-solid sausage-octopus.
Well, now Yuki could possibly return to his index cards! This was infinitely more interesting. But… well… Yuki didn’t… talk about his quirk that often, not with his peers. So now that an opportunity presented itself, he was at a loss for words.
Yuki teased a piece of chicken with his chopsticks, looking at his bento box. It was the eyes, wasn’t it? It was always his eyes that gave him away…
“I, uh…” Yuki stammered, “Yeah. I have a quirk.”
He mirrored the boy beside him, pointing his gaze ground-ward.
“I think they hate me for other reasons though, honestly. They’re not nice about my quirk, either. But that’s not why they hate me.”
It was the great downfall of being abrasive and quirked. Kids hated what was different, but expected the objects of their disdain to be quiet and dejected, not snarky and cruel.
Yuki finally pinched he chicken with his chopsticks, guiding the bite to his mouth.
“You still have a chance to choose a better lunch partner,” the brunette offered, “Being quirked isn’t the end of the world. It’s about who you know.”
Yuki really did appreciate having someone to eat with, for once—he really wasn’t trying to get rid of the New Kid. But simply by sitting with Yuki would make the New Kid a target of the bullies by proxy. It was kind of like a… Quiet Kids Code to protect other quiet kids from suffering similar fates.

Natsu has never really been part of the popular group, so even if he got accepted among them, he'd probably get chased off not long after. Natsu didn't like his quirk, it felt alive, and it was hungry for heat. It'd didn't matter the source- be it food, flames, or even people it wanted their warmth and swallow it whole. Natsu often forgot public use of quirks is illegal. The boy's sense of legality was distorted compared to others. It'd made sense- why it is, but he still doesn't like it.
Natsu hasn't processed the other boy's words as he alit a part of his lunch. So when the burnt boy asked his question, he was a little surprised by his expression since the other's boy's expression looked shocked and slacked- but not scared. But Natsu asked his question anyways- about the other boy's quirk. Natsu watched the other boy intently as he played with his lunch as he seemingly decided his next set of words. But when the boy looked up, Natsu looked back to the ground he explains that he has a quirk, but pointedly didn't explain what it is. The boy would then explain that the others' hated him for other reasons.
Natsu' lift his gaze from the ground to look at the boy, thinking what'd he meant by that. Natsu didn't quite understand, but Natsu looked back to the ground as he tries to figure out what he meant. The boy would then say that he still has a chance to find a better lunch partner and that being quirked isn't the end of the world. It's about who he knows. Natsu silently stares ahead, considering what to do. He could leave and pretend he never talked to him, and maybe that selfish attempt at social upgrading will do something.
But Natsu knew better, much better. So Natsu absent-mindedly said, "I don't mind you as a lunch partner though," Natsu said before finishing his lunch and putting it aside. Natsu sat there with the bento box at his side as he lifted his hand to the air, and licks of flames danced around his fingers. Natsu then spoke up, "I think once they know more about my quirk- they might become scared of me." Natsu says as he lowered his hand back to his side and looks up to the skies above.
Natsu wondered if he could see any shapes in the clouds. "That isn't too bad though, I'd rather they be scared of me and safe then fearless of me and then get hurt by me," There were no unique shapes up there.

of copycats and flames THE SUGGESTION TO "FIND SOMEONE ELSE" was, in a way, a test. It was a test to see if the New Kid was even worth talking to, or just another one of those Fake Classmates that gave Yuki so much grief. If the New Kid was worried about being popular, Yuki would’ve clearly dodged a bullet.
But instead, New Kid didn’t mind eating with Yuki. It wasn’t the best, most reassuring answer per se. It was a few degrees shy of “wanting” to eat with someone, and a step down from “being okay with” eating with someone… but it was better than outright abandoning Yuki right out of the gate.
“I guess I don’t mind eating with you, either,” Yuki agreed. He cracked a rare smile, and took another bite of his lunch. He held his bento in his hands, and his index cards slipped onto the pavement near his thigh, promptly forgotten.
“Wouldn’t be so sure,” Yuki answered, watching the flames dance upon the New Kid’s fingertips. Unlike normal fire, his was blue. It was pretty to behold, “I mean… who doesn’t love setting things on fire, right?”
Yuki certainly indulged in some pyromania, especially in elementary school—taking a magnifying glass and burning weeds that had pushed their way up through the pavement. Normal childhood things like that.
New Kid seemed to have some damage about “hurting people that weren’t afraid of him”, though.
Hm.
“Is that how you got the scar?”
It was kind-of difficult to ignore New Kid’s massive facial scar. And if he was cautious because he’d burnt himself once before… well… that’d make sense, wouldn’t it.
“My name’s Yuki Tachibana,” the brunette finally disclosed, “I would shake your hand, but my quirk makes it hurt big-time to touch other people. Nice to meet you, though.”
Yuki raised his chopsticks in a mock-toast, as if to say “cheers” to the other boy.
The roof was pretty sparsely populated, and no one was paying much attention to anyone beyond their social circles. So, after hazarding a glance around, Yuki spoke again in a conciliatory tone.
“I can show you my quirk, if you’d like. But I need to borrow something of yours. The longer you’ve had it, the better,” the teen confided.

Natsu was oblivious to Yuki's test, assuming it was just a fair warning, Natsu has never been good at picking up double meanings or implications. But Natsu was blissfully unaware of anything and instead kept admiring the clouds above, as the pair made their small talk. Natsu was a liar in not only words but in actions, so being so honest with this kid felt weird, even if he felt a sort of kinship with him. Natsu looked over the boy as he spoke once more. Who cracked a smile at him, Natsu tilted his head at this reaction, before giving the boy a small smile himself.
As Natsu played with his quirk- despite its fiery nature, it wasn't warm or inviting as a campfire, but still as destructive and dangerous as a raging inferno that consumed all in its path. Truly a glutton of a quirk. Natsu cracked another smile at the boy as he joked about setting things on flames, "Y-yeah?" Natsu said as he finally set his embers back into his body for safety reason as he only now realized his hand was covering the cement under him with a layer of black frost and ice, "Sadly I don't set things on fire, I freeze things." Natsu spoke as he pulled his hand away from the cement as it appears covered in icy soot. And for some reason, he wiggled his fingers as he lifts his hand.
When the boy asked if his quirk was the reason for his scarring, Natsu lifted his hand over to his scarred side, "Yeah, kinda," Natsu said not wholly telling the truth but also not lying. "It's complicated," Natsu said more honestly this time around, it is complicated. But thankfully, the boy, who he finally, learned is named Yuki Tachibana, and the boy explained that it hurts to touch people. Natsu didn't mind not making contact with people Natsu gets scared of hurting others with his quirk. Natsu nodded his head understandingly, "Nice to meet you too, Yuki," Natsu says as he looks at the boy's chopsticks in the air, before realizing it was a sort of cheers. Not sure what to use, Natsu picked up his bento box and lifted it high, mirroring Yuki's actions. His action caused a few scattered rice in the box flying around Natsu. Natsu either hasn't noticed the rice or that he didn't care, but no matter Natsu is now covered in rice.
When Yuki says he can show him his quirk, Natsu looked a bit surprised but pleasantly so when the boy asked to see a belonging of his, the longer, the better, Natsu looked thoughtful for a moment before he realized something. And he pulls out an old steel lighter from his pocket that has since lost its fluid years ago. Natsu carefully held the lighter at the very edge of his fingers to Yuki, so the chance of contact lessened. Natsu waited for the boy to grab it. Natsu wondered what kind of quirk Yuki has.

of copycats and flames THE OTHER BOY'S EXPLANATION EARNED a quirked eyebrow from the shapeshifter. Blue fire was supposed to be the hottest temperature of fire, or so he’d heard, and yet Natsu was insisting that he froze things instead. Yuki was the type to trust his eyes more than the words of others, but… he supposed that Natsu had no reason to lie about his abilities, either. Yuki flapped his hand dismissively, and insisted, “Well… you can still show-off with it.”
A thin vein of annoyance ran through the dark-haired youth—he didn’t like to be wrong, or even suggested to be wrong. And people were so difficult sometimes, even lonely little new kids. Why were people so tiring…?
When Yuki remarked about the kid’s scar, he seemed uncomfortable about it, remarking that it was “complicated” and covering it with his hand.
“Sorry…” the dark-haired youth mumbled, taking the cue to back-off. What more… Yuki’s ploy to get the other boy to repeat his name fell totally flat. Which meant, to Yuki, he was still the New Kid. Well… there was one way around that.
The other boy rummaged through his pocket and procured what appeared to be a lighter. A nice, steel lighter with one of those caps that you could flip open and closed, like one you would imagine a yakuza to use—man, he’d get in so much trouble if the teachers found out he had a lighter.
Yuki extended a hand, palm upward, so that the other boy could drop the lighter into Yuki’s expectant hand. It was better than grabbing for the thing and accidentally brushing fingertips.
As soon as the lighter connected with the teen’s palm, the tendrils of his flesh spasmed and began to crawl. Yuki’s average-build began to stretch into something more gaunt—his sleeves and pant-hems creeping higher on his limbs. The pallor of their skin remained. His hair grew darker, knappy and black.
It took all of a minute, tops. And soon, a fairly convincing copy of “Natsu Fuyuko” sat where Yuki Tachibana had once been.
Faux-Natsu smiled placidly at the original, their bony hand clasped around the lighter now. Though the replication was fairly good, the eyes still weren’t right—right now, they were brown.
“God, you should really eat more, Fuyuko-san,” the faux-Natsu remarked, patting their stomach, “I feel like I’m going to blow away in the first strong gust of wind.”
With their free hand, they combed through the tangled mess of black hair atop their head with their fingertips, grimacing slightly. His hair needed a good combing, too. Faux-Natsu touched the side of their face, where the scar should have been, only to find... smooth skin. No scar whatsoever. It was like a Natsu whose past had been totally erased.
“Huh...” faux-Natsu demanded, “That's... weird. I... did not know I... couldn't copy scars.”
The shapeshifter hazarded an uncertain glance at the original, ready to drop the lighter at the first sign of discomfort.

Natsu looks over at the boy as he said he could show off his quirk-Natsu without thinking, grabbed his water bottle, and then spoke the words, "Come Forth- and as he does so the water bottle exploded into a pink flame. And after a few moments, the fire died down to leave behind a blackened frosted over the mess. And Natsu started to shake the bottle, the sounds of ice juggled came from it. Natsu then twisted the tap and threw out the contents of the bottle, and all that came out was snow and bits of ice, and it flew into the air. Natsu looked nonchalantly at what he did before looking at Yuki expectedly, hoping for a positive reaction.
Natsu was frankly not always the most socially aware person around, so he didn't notice the slight annoyance coming from the boy-of the tenseness from him when Natsu said his scares are complicated. Natsu thought this whole exchange was going swimmingly. Despite Natsu's passiveness and quiet demeanor, he was already starting to consider Yuki as a possible friend. Natsu wasn't used to having friends his age to be perfectly honest. He was used to befriending younger children-that was his role back at that hell he called a childhood home- he would protect and take care of children instead of the adults-which might've explained Natsu's uncertainty in how to interact with people his age. He felt like he grew up too fast.
Natsu handed the boy his lighter-not knowing it could get him in trouble- and watches as the boy activates his quirk. It was strange to watch and even harder to try and understand from his point of view. So Natsu watches as Yuki's body stretches out, his hair drying out and becoming messier, to Natsu's shock- a total lack of scarring on both his face and the right side of his body. Natsu couldn't exactly hide his facial scars, Natsu does his best to conceal the ones covering almost half his body.
Natsu couldn't help but stare at the copy of himself. Natsu filled with a lot of emotions. He couldn't explain it. But he kept staring at Yuki's face that reflected his own. But when Yuki spoke up- Natsu looked away sheepishly and nodded his head as he looked down at his feet for a moment before looking back up curiously. "Yeah, my guardian says the same thing- he's always worried about my weight-or lack thereof." Natsu responded as he kept looking Yuki's face, Natsu smiles very slightly and says, "sorry, and don't worry it might seem like the wind will do that, but it never does." Natsu joked very lightly before letting Yuki speak about the lack of scars, which he didn't he couldn't do.
Natsu blinks once-twice before saying, "Might be for the best-" Natsu says frankly, scars hurt. Natsu looked forward watches as the snow that he tossed into the air, still flying through the air until it fell to the ground over the edge. "You have an amazing quirk, Yuki." Natsu says as the last of the snow dust fluttered away into the sky. "You could do great things with it." Natsu says with a smile over to the not Natsu.
Once again-Natsu's golden eye lingered on the green that looked back at him. He would've looked nice with green eyes, Natsu thought.

of copycats and flames THE DARK-HAIRED SHIFTER FLINCHED as Natsu showed his quirk, the bursting water bottle startling him with the magnitude of the explosion. Yuki covered their face with their arm, expecting debris to be blown towards them. Thankfully, the force with which the bits of plastic hit them did not seem to be that violent.
After the shift, “Natsu” continued to prod at their new physique, giving a droll, “I can see why.” When the real Natsu remarked that their guardian was always worrying about their weight too. Note… guardian. Not parent. It was a distinction that the studious youth was quick to pick-up on.
The compliment was taken by a dispassionate look from “Natsu”.
“I guess,” they remarked, “It would be great, if I ever used it. My dad hates it when I use my quirk. Here-“
Yuki held-out their hand, intent upon returning the lighter. As soon as Natsu held his hand out, Yuki would drop the lighter into their expectant palm. As soon as the lighter left Yuki’s grasp, their form would unravel, returning them to their usual brown-haired visage.
“I know it’s the law and all, and Dad’s just following the law, but…” Yuki rambled, retrieving their chopsticks and bento once again, “It’s fun to be someone else for a change… even if for a little.”
The brunette’s eyes glittered a bit, still whirling through colors—brown, orange, yellow, green, back to orange—but their gaze was downcast, focused on picking more food out of the bento.
“You said guardian, not Mom or Dad,” Yuki observed, finally retrieving an adequate mouthful of food with their chopsticks, “What’s the story there?”
If they weren’t comfortable sharing… oops. Yuki assumed Natsu’s word-choice indicated a willingness to talk about it.

Natsu didn't flinch at all when the water burst into snow and ice. Instead, he was watching the snow scatter in the wind. It was a pretty sight. Natsu found prettiness in some strange things. Maybe it was just who he is as a person that he finds beauty in things people typically didn't even notice.
Natsu's eyes the way not!Natsu prodded at his own body, which started to make Natsu feel self-conscious a little bit more. Maybe gaining a little bit of body weight would be good for his health-it would help get Finn off his back more often about the subject matter.
It must've looked weird how the two Natsus expressed themselves- since normally Natsu was hard to read. The Not!Natsu was almost Alien to the burnt Natsu. The real Natsu stares at the Not!Natsu as he spoke about his father and how he hated him using his quirk. Natsu looks to his feet and says- "That's rough," Natsu sympathetically said to the best of his ability-but might've still sounded flat.
When Not!Natsu told him here-Natsu reached out his hand to grab his lighter back. Yuki returned to himself instead of wearing a non-scarred up version of his face. Despite the initial excitement of seeing Yuki's quirk, Yuki wearing his face, made him feel weird things about his face and himself.
Natsu played with the lighter between his fingers and flicked it closed and put it in his pocket. Yuki spoke, saying how his father was following the law. Natsu nodded his head understandably and said- "I get that- my guardian is more willing to let me use my quirk-it'd be weird if he didn't since he has one himself." Natsu says as he looks up to the sky and wondered what a cloud tastes like.
Yuki asked why he said guardian and not dad or mom. Natsu picked up his bento box and played with the little bit of rice at the bottom of the box. "My parents are dead, or they left me behind after I was born, I don't really know, so there's not much of a story there." Natsu bluntly said as he plays with the rice a little bit more. "I got adopted by a man named Finn Halloran a few weeks ago." Natsu spoke his voice had no strong emotions behind it if anything the way he was talking seemed like he has practiced this many times before. That is because he has many-many times before. To practice his lines for potential adopters back at the orphanage. And for anybody who got worried about his health or wellbeing.

of copycats and flames THE SHAPESHIFTER RETRIEVED THEIR BENTO once again, working the rice with their chopsticks. He listened closely as his scarred acquaintance spoke, watching them with a measured gaze. Surprisingly, the dark-haired boy easily surrendered some of his backstory, explaining that he could use his quirk because his guardian was a quirker, too.
“My mom’s a quirker,” Yuki offered in return, “An empath. Think that’s why my eyes are the way they are.”
Yuki’s mom had always that Yuki’s eyes tended to match his aura. And, since Yuki didn’t see auras, he simply had to take her word on it.
“Her quirk is passive, though. Can’t really turn it off.”
And as Natsu persisted, the shapeshifter’s expression pinched slightly. Dead parents, adopted by a man named Finn just recently.
“Hey, well, I’m halfway caught-up to you,” Yuki offered, offering a wry smile, “My ‘Dad’ is not really my dad. Mom married him when I was in elementary school. Pretty sure my bio dad’s dead, because no one talks about him.”
Yuki checked his phone—lunch was nearly over—he closed his bento and began to snap it closed, before tucking it into his bag. Yuki then pulled his fingerless gloves back over his hands. The bento was tucked into his backpack, backpack closed, and Yuki stood up once again.
“We should get going,” the shifter with the two-toned hair insisted, “Lunch is almost over.”
