Well if someone could help her Japanese sound a bit better and less like a crude minded cave woman then Jess was going to seize the oportunity even if she was a bit cautious and frightened about it. Sure this person was another student but meeting anyone new was an anxious moment if it had build up. If it happened out of nowhere Jess could handle it better but having accepted the offer online and having it set up yesterday allowed for a whole day of the nervous energy to form into something that caused this feeling within her.So it would be on this day that she would come to the school grounds to meet someone and was nervous in her approach. Dressed in her street clothes her black trip pants jingled as she moved forward throughout the rows of houses on her way to the meeting ground. She had only wore black eye liner as she normally enjoyed a more normal route for meeting others the first time but her band tee and the graphic depiction of violence it bore did more than thick eye shadow would have to showed someone her affiliation. Still gloriously oblivious to this fact Jess walked up to the skate park looking from someone from over a century ago due to her getting her fashion from VHS tapes and old 'CDs' of death and black metal bands long since dead. While it did feel a bit queer to not arrive in her student garb Jess felt most comfortable in this style of dress and it was what she wore when she was living on the estate with Kasey, her benefactor. While normally she would enjoy to wear a horizontal stripped hoodie that downplayed the overall size of her torso it was a bit too hot for that now and she would have to wait until this place had it's version of winter to bust those out again. It would be just slightly before five PM, the arranged meeting time, when Jess would arrive to the agreed upon location within the campus and sit on a bench while looking around at the place with the sun beginning it's lazy descent in the sky. It was a nice mental image for the Slavic woman to latch onto and distract her from the anxiety that had built in her throughout the day, while she felt no fear when it came to life or death situations the social side of life was not something she felt she had the skill to succeed in sufficiently and satisfactory to her own standards. Still she could not help but wonder how Kenji would be like in person outside of class, would he brush her off once he realized how hard the task of teaching her would be? Jess Circe certainly hoped not, instead she was hoping this would be the start to some kind of comrade betwixt the two to share and grow throughout the school experience as she still had two years after this one to survive in the social status of the school. i'll help you back up again KENJI WAS NOT THE BEST STUDENT, and he had no illusions about being the best, either—he did alright. Average grades, absolute middle of his year in junior high. Nothing to be ashamed of, nothing to brag about either. Just average. He couldn’t stand those stuffy assholes who tried to tutor everyone, either—like they were better than everybody else, or something. So annoying!
Anyways, Kenji had been fooling around on UA Chat on his way to the skate park after some DC-mouthbreather told him he couldn’t skate on campus, and that new kid that’d joined 1-A was in chat asking for help in Japanese. She—Jess—was beefier than Kenji, taller than Kenji and... he didn’t know, she seemed cool. Misako was nice enough, Michi had the personality of a wet towel, Prism was… Prism… but Jess seemed neat! So Kenji offhandedly offered his services.
japanese is the only language i know && i speak it ok
After some light ribbing from Eddy about the grammatical correctness of Kenji’s sentence, Jess agreed to meet with the boy in spite of his stilted offer to help. And she wanted to meet right that very moment.
i'm not on campus rn heading to the skate park
No problem, the girl had insisted, she’d go to the skate park. Shit, what about skating?! So Kenji tucked his phone away and skated the remainder of the way to the park, eager to get their sooner.
Kenji had been at the skatepark almost an hour when his classmate arrived, his usual shock of bright red hair hidden underneath the less-common beanie. His attire was also relatively common-place—skating shoes with thick, flat soles, cargo shorts, t-shirt and a hoodie. All very nondescript compared to the grunge look Jess had going.
It was such a relief to be skating again—Mosa had surprised the teen with a new board, upon learning that Yui had snapped Kenji’s months and months ago.
Picking-up skating again was hard. It’s like all his skating muscles had deteriorated from disuse—but he hit a good groove right before Jess had showed-up. Kenji picked-up his board and trotted to the fence as soon as he saw her, waving a hand.
“Hey, Jess!” he greeted, “It’s me!”
His forehead was slick with sweat now, so Kenji peeled of his beanie and wiped it with the sleeve of his hoodie. The boy dropped his board on the opposite side of the fence, before gracefully vaulting over, using one hand to steady himself. He landed with a “whoomph” in the grass, his legs buckling slightly beneath him. Okay, so he was a little worn-out.
“Thanks for coming all the way out here,” he said with an affable grin, running a hand through his hair, “I… would have gone back to school to tutor you.”
He felt low-key terrible for making her travel so far, but Jess had insisted on venturing his way for reasons beyond the redhead. Kenji meandered towards the bench, retrieving his board along the way. The board was propped-up against the bench itself, and Kenji clambered onto the bench itself, sitting on the back-rest portion of the bench.
Somehow sitting next to a girl was less nerve-wracking when one wasn’t sitting in the seat, but on the back-rest, next to her.
“How are you?” he asked, grinning apologetically.

Jess was still getting used to using cell phones, they were just so small that her thumbs were too big and so she had developed a style of typing with her pinkies instead and was finding it much easier to do so much so that now she could walk and text at the same time. A startling good revelation that would allow her to access the chat more often which she felt helped her connect with her fellow students far sooner than she would have been able to without it. This whole experience was extremely odd to the Slavic girl who was not used to being welcomed, let alone seemingly by almost everyone she met. It was so odd it put her in a weird head space of someone who was receiving more kindness than they thought the world would allow, her world view shifting as each new person ingratiated her into their fold in one way or another. The summoner had wanted to meet her fellow student at the skate park in order to avoid putting him any more out of his way than she already had by receiving some outside tutoring, Jess was not a person who did well when she felt that she owed someone else karmically speaking. Thus she walked out to a part of the suburbs she had never been to before and was a bit away from the Estate that Kasey owned and Jess called home, it was an interesting and insightful trip the Pole had seen many new things within the city and more quirk mutated people than she was used to. It was all rather welcoming on top of everything else that had happened that Jess could feel her shell becoming less and less useful. Kenji appeared to be dressed in normal skating attire and seemed to be more in his element out of the uniform she had seen him in before from class. " Hello Kenji, is Jess!" she chirped back with a wave as the boy made his way eloquently over the fence much more gracefully than she could have without Black Hole Sun out thanks to her body retaining thick cords of muscle which were better use for going through things than around them. " There is of no need Kenji, easy for me to come out here instead and besides this way you can skate while teach and not get in of trouble" Jess responded brushing aside his worry easily as the trip benefitted her more than a regular trip to the school would have, as she did so enjoy to explore. Although he was sitting on the back of the bench he was still within comfortable eye level for the slavic lady who did not need to move her head to maintain eye contact with her fellow student as he sat down, Jess would give him a smile as he did so delighted he was not frightened of her as many people were at least at first. It was understandable in her mind but she had grown up with a crippling loneliness due to it and thus the girl appreciated it when she was treated as 'normal'. "Fairly of good Kenji, how are of you? Walk over was enjoyable, much better than staying seated in office chair looking at screen." her voice was low but soft and gentle reflective of her self and her voice rumbled with happy tones as she responded to Kenji's question of her well-being. " So what are of things you like besides skating? We can of be doing those too as I learn, I simply ask you tell me how of better to make sentences as I forge with tongue." Miss Circe did not want to stop her fellow student from enjoying his day and it would tell her more about him at the same time allowing two birds to be stoned at once for her as Jess was certain the saying went. i'll help you back up again THE REDHEADED TEEN GAVE AN AFFABLE, albeit slightly awkward, smile. He had announced that it was him because he was wearing a hat, and he wasn’t sure if his classmate would recognize him with it one. Jess, in turn, saw fit to announce that “it was Jess”! Y… yes, indeed it was. She was a great deal more… visually distinct than Kenji was. He’d even greeted her by name. So… of course it was her?
“Y-yeah,” the teen acknowledged simply, not wanting to alienate his classmate too much. He was already unpopular with basically everyone, so… why fuck it up with the new kid, too?
As he perched on the back of the bench, Jess haltingly explained that it was easier for her to come here, rather than for Kenji to come to her… and besides which, he wouldn’t get in-trouble for skating out here, rather than somewhere else.
“I don’t care about getting in trouble,” Kenji said with a cheeky grin, dismissively flapping his hand in front of him. He’d already earned a few detentions for trivial shit anyways. The stunt he and Rei had pulled on the fourth floor, firstly—a dress code violation, secondly—and he’d nearly landed a third for quirk use, but he’d managed to lie his way out of that one. Kenji was already amassing quite the list of transgressions, so what was one more?
He murmured affirmatives as Jess explained that the walk was good, and better than sitting in front of a computer. And when she turned the question back to Kenji—what did he like to do? Could he do that while teaching her?
“I dunno, I like video games?” he hazarded. He did really like video games, “Sometimes I like to climb things, too. Like… climb a tree? I dunno. Right now I just need to catch my breath.”
Jess spoke softly, which in-turn dialed Kenji’s energy down significantly—he was the kind of boy who tended to match the energy with which the people around him were acting. (Ergo, being combative around people he perceived as combative.)
He sighed—skating circles around the skate park had winded him, so he didn’t mind just sitting and talking with Jess for a bit.
“Do you need help with homework?” Kenji asked, “Or do you need help with talking?”
You could talk while doing just about anything, but he wouldn’t skate while trying to help Jess with homework. That was more of a sit-down things.
“If you have homework, we can work on homework,” Kenji offered, “Or… if you just want to practice talking, we can walk around the park and talk?”
Someone was actually giving him a chance, so he was eager to be helpful in the best possible manner—and trying his best not to fuck it up.

Why would Kenji not care about getting into more trouble for such trivial things? Sure Jess did not think rules were things that could never be broken but to her the justification of breaking aforementioned rule mattered in the context, as such skateboarding when one could go to a park for that was not worth risking the trouble in her mind. Regardless it seemed it came more from a nonchalance and lack of care for something infringing upon his traveling choices and Jess could not judge the boy for not caring even though she would not do so herself. It was why she did not dress like she would like at the school after all instead blending in with her uniform to not gather infractions daily. " You are of brave person Kenji" Jess would respond to the skater who had flapped his hands in her kind voice. " Ahh of climbing, yes this is sometimes fun. First time was of surprise to Jess just how freeing seeing view was from so high up" she chirped in response before replying with another question. " Ah good, what kind of video game? Like on very first console or silly thing that tries to be real life?" woefully ignorant of the current gaming scene the Polish girl opted to not even guess at asking about the names in particular. While she did not play many herself she only saw appeal in far more retro games that delivered an experience through an odd controller one could put in their hands rather than anything more modern. That being said she did not even know what current games were like, learning most of what she knew about them from VHS tapes from America from around 1960-2005. It was odd to her that Kenji was so winded so Jess began to wonder just how long the boy had been skating for, it must have been some time as the exhaustion kept around the rather light framed male for quite some time of someone his age and what Jess perceived was his fitness level from his physical appearance. Still even if it was for a short time it was hardly something Jess would judge him for, to the contrary she would be excited for him trying to push his boundaries and become better than before or struggle in spite of an injury or other short coming. Nobody was a better companion on the road to improvement like someone who dedicated time to the gym. Pondering the question for a moment in her head the Slavic girl wondered, she did not want to seem like she did not need more help but her grades were rather good thanks to the accelerated learning programs that she had been on previously. Jess simply could not think of something to lie about her being behind enough to justify the help, though truthfully her speech no doubt was atrocious compared to her Polish verbosity. The lexicon of her Japanese left much to be desired in her opinion and she wished to rectify that but realized starting by fixing her grammar was the first step and as such she would attempt to communicate this to Kenji. " Just of speech, hence why Jess say Kenji comrade can be of do what he like. After all he is of friend help me, so why not he also enjoy self while do so?" her face lit up into a smile that pressed her puffy cheeks into her eyes like an overexcited pit bull. Her head would cock to the side as she spoke and a lock of her silky hair would fall in front of her crimson eyes as she did so. [ WC: 613 ] |

i'll help you back up again THE GIRL PRAISED KENJI'S FLIPPANT disregard for the rules as something “brave” and the previously-gloating redhead was forced to pause. Brave? He was so used to getting shit about how “stupid” or “annoying” or—the most recent addition to the repertoire of adjectives—“unheroic”. To be called “brave” was… wow. It felt pretty good. Kenji couldn’t help the earnest smile that flickered across his face. Not his usual, cheeky grin, but an actual, genuine smile.
“Little bit of everything,” he said, in response to the video games question, “These days it’s a lot of… Underwatch, sometimes Burgdusk… basically anything Ninetendo… I only have an old handheld console that I bought on my own, so I’m kinda limited to whatever they have the dorms, or PC games…”
Kenji had saved-up to buy his console, bought it used at a store, and carried it with him through all the ups and downs of his young life. Even if new systems were constantly getting churned-out every few years, Kenji’s console was his—it was one of his most prized possessions.
Jess confirmed that she just wanted to talk, so Kenji sprung back to his feet, leaping-off of the bench.
“Let’s walk, then,” he insisted.
He grabbed his skateboard, tucking it under his arm. Walking and talking was so much easier than sitting and talking, after all. Maybe they could even grab a snack. Maybe he could buy Jess a snack, with Mosa’s allowance. That’d be pretty cool.
The teen still seemed a little winded, and slightly flushed, as the two of them would set-off down the sidewalk. His stubborn insistence upon wearing his hoodie, even if skateboarding got him all gross and sweaty, was likely to thank for that. The teen didn’t care enough to shed his sweater, though.
“Have you been to this park before?” the teen asked brightly, looking up towards his silver-haired classmate, “It’s pretty cool. Besides the skate-park, my favorite thing is probably the playground.” , It was probably a childish thing to say, but whatever.
“What do you like to do?” Kenji asked, curious enough to return the favor of asking Jess.

That smile actually reflected joy in Kenji's eyes? Jess had not expected this from his demeanor and had expected him to throw the compliment she gave him away but instead he took it to heart from the looks of it and this made the Polish girl very happy in return. Now she just had to figure out Underwatch and Burgdusk and what exactly they were, from the context it sounded like something from Ninetendo unless Kenji meant those two games PLUS anything Ninetendo. Regardless Jess caught a bit of what he said and nodded along as the youth spoke. Now old handheld consoles were a bit more her speed having played a lot of older systems back at the orphanage to fill her time, this was more familiar to her. " Oh like game girl?" Jess would ask in response to Kenji's declaration of which systems he had played before. Following as Kenji picked up his skateboard Jess would fall in line and make sure her longer legs did shorter strides to not overtake her friend who was doing her the solid of helping her with Japanese. " Have not been here before as am rather new to Japan. Oh is the playground here of special compared to others? Jess always did like jungle gym even if now much too big for it....are you tired? Want me scoop you so you have more energy for of skating? Why thick hood on such warm day?" Jess would babble like a brook just bowling through things that Kenji was no doubt trying to hide from her in a sense of machismo or something but the girl could feel his chest have a higher pace than before indicating his breathing was tiring and he was a bit more worn out than when they had started walking. This combined with her lack of social awareness or graces left her calling out the young boy who no doubt would not like it. " Well Jess of like to hang out on Estate when not in school, play pranks with summon, get food for Setsuna, she of like to go to gym but also of like to dress up with the makeups. Jess like doing of most things as long as she do them with friends!" Her voice would raise into a triumphant shout at the end as she pumped her fist into the air before growing a bit embaressed and nervously returning to a normal position with sheepish eyes. i'll help you back up again "UH."
GameGirl? Truth be told, Kenji had only heard of that console by name, and all he knew was that it was ooooold. Like, super-old. Retro. Only collectors had them. But he wasn’t going to mess this up by calling Jess out or make himself look stupid by not knowing what a GameGirl was exactly.
“Yeah, kind-of like that!” the boy agreed. Kenji’s pace was naturally a little quick, so hopefully it wouldn’t hinder his taller friend too terribly much trying to stay back with him.
“The playground is special, yeah!” the boy confirmed, “It’s got this giant cement slide. Super cool. I’ll show you.”
Maybe they were too old for such things as playgrounds—or perhaps playgrounds were the perfect source for an appropriate amount of chaos. The teen was so wrapped-up in his excitement over the slide-hill, he had almost missed Jess’s offer of sweeping him off of his feet and carrying him.
“Scoop me?!” the teen echoed, incredulous, “What, no! I’m not a baby!”
That said, he did still look warm and winded. Geez, some girls thought they could do whatever to a guy, just because they were short.
“I just like how it looks,” Kenji said dismissively, flapping a hand in Jess’s direction. Heaven forbid she try and pick him up. It would wound what paltry amounts of pride the redhead still had.
Kenji listened with varying degrees of interest as Jess listed her interests—“estate” huh? Like a big piece of property? That was cool. Playing pranks, rad—getting food, normal enough—dressing up and wearing makeup, ugh, girly things.
“Are you rich?” the teen blurted. It was really hard to tell, when someone’s casual garb could best be described as “grunge”, but… if she lived on an estate, and could afford to go to a gym… unless it was the gym on-campus, of course. The idea of a wealthy lifestyle held a certain appeal to the redhead, since… well, since he’d always been poor. But he didn’t cleave-on to that topic of conversation for too long-- perhaps out of embarrassment for asking such a nosy question.
“You play pranks with your quirk, too?! Dude, no way!” the boy cheered, “Me too! Have you gotten in trouble for it yet?”
Kenji shook his hair, puffing his cheeks out.
“Honestly, I think Eddy’s got it out for me,” the redhead remarked, “So I get busted for small stuff all the time. Like, sticking phone to ceilings? So easy to fix. But no, that’s unauthorized quirk use! Detention.”
For someone who didn’t care about consequences, he certainly took the additional attention personally.
“Come on, the slide hill is this way,” Kenji said with an eager “come hither” motion, “Hopefully someone left some cardboard around.”
