No, that was half right. Cherry did manifest the same sort of horns, though hers were more small, narrowed, and easily hidden under her hair. It was some physical trait that was more apparent with Kasey. Even if she couldn't remember when they were children, she could remember the crown, the tiara that hid the one trait they both shared, along with their faces. "Oh, they probably work the same way like when you make square watermelons and stuff." the idea of molds forcing people to grow a certain way, didn't seem much different than produce, or corsets and waist trainers. There was a million ways to influence the body. Animalistic quirks were easily manageable with existing tools for animals. With it, the strange line of livestock and cannibalism blurred. If you had the traits of a cow, did you no longer eat beef? Was it something to do with your quirk, or a life choice because of it? With more answers, came even more questions. Kasey couldn't answer the unasked question. Simply put, some quirks appeared before others. Some were awakened late, some when they were children, like Kasey. The horns on herself, and her sister, were there since birth, long before either of them started to hear their new friend speak to them. And long before either of them were able to manifest their own forms. "If the government did their job, we would still be at Yuuei." Setsuna would speak aloud. "Thundershock would be a problem long resolved." He grumbled to himself from behind the collar. "Paperwork is unfit to deal with the reality."Copycat killers. People who joined in unison. Kasey understood them. She was among them. She was a criminal too. But never did she end a life that was unfit. Every death was calculated, chosen, and carefully picked. With the absence of them, a stronger society. A thug, a thief, a conman, a scam artist. None would miss them. They weren't beneficial to anyone else but themselves. items donated to the less fortunate. With their undoing, others would get just a bit of help. She considered it a community service, but even she understood it was simply murder. "Well, then I'll be looking forward to Professional Hero, Chimera." she would say with a smile. "Maybe by then, I'll have a better place in this world.
Maybe I'll actually belong among society and not just watching from the distance."~ Word Count: 404 ~ |

499 WC I refuse to hit 500 D:< | Chimera nodded, paused, then chuckled softly. "Yeah. Heh. One of the last times I hung out with Levi she took me on a tour of Tokyo to see some of the really weird things, like that sad egg mascot. I think I remember seeing square watermelons at some point in that. It was trippy. But...fun."
It felt like forever ago. Back when he wasn't as together as he was now, or as persistent in how he helped his friends. He'd backed down so easily when she told him to instead of trying to press. If he had then maybe--
But they'd already gone in circles on that. He wouldn't do it again.
Chimera frowned a little more at Setsuna's follow-up words. Were his thoughts the same as Kasey's? Did she think the government wasn't doing their job? He understood the distrust that leaked through between people and the law, but Chimera was training to be a hero. A hero funded and taught by the government no less. People--even students--sometimes forgot about that, but he hadn't. It definitely made some things harder to swallow, like the Quirk tax and the bias against Quirker people trying to get into positions of power, where he was supposed to keep his mouth shut and avoid the topic at all cost.
But if it weren't for them then he wouldn't even be here. There had to be a divide between the people that wanted the hero program to succeed and those hurting quirkers. Some kind of schism in the middle of the government that, hopefully, would go in favor of the former. Right?
Why else would the hero program exist, otherwise?
And why, if he really believed in it, did he go behind it's back to help Yojin?
...well I know the answer to that one. But it's not any less stupid...
He looked down and fiddled with his claws, scratching them against each other. He wasn't sure what else to say to that. It felt like a subject he shouldn't touch. Or didn't want to. Both. He didn't want to focus on the politics.
"Instinct," he said, smiling again but still not as much as before, "That's the hero name I picked. Like...trust your instincts, or animal instincts. Like that."
Chimera started picking himself up from the concrete and stood up, stretching his arms up over his head and hearing his bones creak but not pop. Sitting against the hard ground and equally hard metal door of the garage wasn't good for the joints. Bleh. "I should be heading back. I appreciate the offer for a ride but...I think I wanna run, think some thoughts, all that jazz. But. Thanks for this. And everything else. It..." he looked down at Kasey and Setsuna, looked back out at the reddening sky, and sighed softly, "It felt kind of like getting some sort of closure, even if it's been so long. So. Thank you. I needed this."

Sad egg? Was that a euphemism? No, it didn't matter. She didn't want to know. It wasn't a memory for her to remember. Parts of her life were meant to be kept and treasured by others than each other. Together, they would have the whole of her, or at least pieces to make something close to it. There was always going to be pieces missing, but like the living, some secrets were personal. She wasn't going to dig deeper than she had to. Square foods that were round, and other strange shapes. All of it was done with clever tricks, and some with the aid of quirks. Science had existed beforehand, and it would remain even now. Everything could be explained, except when, well, it couldn't. Kasey lingered on all of the questions she avoided to give the girl her privacy. All of the memories of Seki, and the life she was too blind to see. It was his life, and pieces not shared were simply not meant to be shared. She was no different. She would remain as she was, in the back of her mind as a thought that would take shape in her dreams. Government was always contradictory. She hated it. A military man ran the school. The military swore to protect them. The military tried to exterminate them. Yet, they were the ones that funded heroes, the schools, and other programs. It was hard to hate them, when they provided the means against what they might have been trying to do. If they really were trying to get rid of them all, then perhaps funding schools and licensing heroes was the best cover up. Maybe, in some twisted reality, the heroes were fools to real villains, and it was villains who would save society. Maybe. Or maybe it was just another sick fantasy for the girl. "Then follow them." she would say in response to his name. "Trust what you feel. Sometimes what's right, and what's legal isn't the same thing." She would smile, "Slavery was legal at one point, and those that freed slaves were criminals. Sometimes you have to." He would rise, stretch, and Kasey would remain as she was. If he didn't need her help, and he wanted to take his peace alone, she would let him. It wasn't her child. He was going to be a hero one day, he could protect himself. She wasn't there to baby sit anyone anymore. She would nod silently to his words. Closure was needed. People needed it. Kasey however, drowned in her own grief. She had lost her family, both instances. She had lost friends, she had lost lovers. She was just getting used to feeling human and now she coped with the silence of loneliness. "Be careful," she warned, "Don't let your thoughts consume you. It's harder to fight things in your head, rather than the things you can fight with your fists."She battled every day, but a day she awoke, was a battle she won. ~ Word Count: 504 ~ |
