It is possible to fly without motors, but not without knowledge and skill. There was a steady breeze today, which was the first reason Hachi had chosen today to hold this lesson. The second was that, despite it being early spring, it was fairly warm and pleasant enough to spend quite a lot of time outside. As her first "solo" mission for her internships Hachi had several items to procure, as well as a safe location to do this. She had opted for a small park in the Musutafu housing district--not too far from her own home, as a matter of fact. She had asked for a little help bringing some supplies over, but while she could have held this lesson inside the training facility, she found that students learned flight far quicker when they were outside and exposed to the elements.
Which was what she was doing today: flight training.
She admittedly didn't know very much about the girl, Honey Hirano, who had signed up for her internship. She knew she was a member of her partner Mikhail Orlov's class as well as a mutation Quirk, and Mikhail had described her as "twelve shots of espresso in a small, cinnamon latte". That already made Hachi sigh. She didn't do poorly with energetic type--she would be a bad teacher if she couldn't handle those--but she had her reserves about teaching a little ball of energy to fly.
Flight was not an easy skill. One didn't learn it in the course of a day. They could learn how to fall safer, to glide a short distance, even perhaps to manage some sort of landing that didn't hurt the knees or palms. So if somebody didn't have patience to take those bumps and scrapes and embarrassing falls then this was just going to take longer than it already would.
This was another reason she wanted to be outside. If they were going to be at this for a while, she'd much rather be in the sunlight and able to relax than cooped up. And the wider space gave Honey more room for her supposed energy as well. The park also had a few people mulling around, and one of a heroes key issues to master was accepting the eyes of a crowd being on them. Especially when you weren't on your "A" game.
Hachi, dressed in a peach, floral patterned sundress rather than her hero suit as she wasn't technically on duty today--though the suit was stored in one of the cases she had on the nearby bench--was flattening out a foam mat about four meters away from the highest point of the park: a fairly impressive climbing structure. Their first lesson was the most simple, in her opinion.
"How to land without spraining anything 101".
I'm sure this will go fine.

She was so excited, her first internship! Wooooohooo! She had been jumping on her bed all morning while talking to Kumoko and adjusting her hero suit. Trust me, that's difficult while you keep on jumping. "I feel like a whole new Honey is born!" She told her friend while jumping up and down with her arms and legs spread as far out as she could before jumping back up. She would have to calm down and she did not even have any sugar, so she was doing fine with that. Alright, alright, finally she remained seated and made sure that the hero suit was sitting fine and that the boasters were on the right spot of her shoes, her hands and her tail was doing fine now too. She wagged it a little before hugging her friend and heading out to go to the spot where she would meet Tsutsuji-sensei!
Aaah to have the third year support teacher as her teacher was like a dream come true. Second dream, because having Orlov-sensei as her own homeroom teacher was dream one. But that did not matter, she had signed up for Tsutsuji-sensei's classes because last year she fixed her hero outfit with the boosters to learn how to fly. She twirled while grabbing her bag with drinks and snacks, keys and bandaid because she knew she was an idiot. So now that she had everything ready she waved goodbye to her friend again and sprinted down. She had designed her own hero outfit and worked hard on it with Kumoko's help and she was rather okay with it. She had showed her mother who had pointed out the importance of colour and prettiness and she had hired a seamstress to fix Honey's sloopy work, it looked rather professional and she held the yellow barret while running down the stairs. She did not care, she was going to do her very best and become even better this year! Now that she had no need to catch up to the first half of year one, she would have more free time to get familiar with what she wanted to acomplish and do, that was her goal for year two. But one for that was learning how to fly or more like how to establish a better crash landing than her own crash landings.
It did not take long for Honey to arrive at the place Hachi had told her. She did not get lost once! It was a big accomplishment but she was an excited creature and she had paid very well attention to where she was running, it also helped that she had her phone in her little hands to check the map every so often. "Tsutsuji-sensei! Hello." She stopped, oh god, so informal! She quickly bowed to the bee teacher and looked a little bashfull at her but with still a big smile on her face: ExciTED!
She looked around to see where to drop her bag and what to do and she tried to remain standing still, she could do that for a bit but not too long. She was going to show her best side!

It is possible to fly without motors, but not without knowledge and skill. A soft voice came up from behind Hachi in a not-so-soft volume, and she turned to see a tiny cosplayer. It took her longer than she cared to admit to realize that this was her student, even with the fluffy tail and cheeks, but it clicked after that amount of time. This must be Honey. Hachi's mouth curled up into a tiny smile. I've not seen a hero suit so...magical girl inspired? Cute.
"Good morning, Hirano-san. As I'm not on duty at the moment you may continue to call me sensei, but when we are doing internships in the city, please refer to me by my hero name. I will in turn be calling you by yours. Honey Lemon, yes? That was what is written on your file, unless you chose a new one in that time." The name was as cute as she was. There was a strange shortness of "cute" heroes, when she thought about it. A lot of the female students had a different approach when it came to costumes--ones Hachi questioned for their practicality many, many times--but in a sense it made her think of her own vigilante costume. Her dress had been much poofier then. Not practical at all.
Hachi gestured a thin, clawed arm at the bench. "You may set your belongings next to mine, I guarantee they will be safe. Now. Can you guess what it is we're going to be doing today, just from looking around us?" Hachi hovered just slightly more to the left so Honey could see around her, and thus see the foam mat on the ground. "I trust you're not going to be nervous about practicing your flying skills in a public place, are you?"

Honey was so excited that she realized too late she had been so informal and had quickly bowed to the teacher. She bit her lip and with big green orbs she stared at Tsutsuji-sensei. Oh, oh shoot, she had used the wrong name... she nodded and did not dare to say anything and looked again a little bashful. "Oh." she got a little more enthusiastic now that she could use her hero name, "I thought I had to fill in something when I started but I changed it." She grinned, "Into Furball." With a big grin on her face, she was absolutely not ashamed of it, Honey Hirano was proud of the idea to be called Furball, because she was always enthusiastic which was the ball reference, bouncing around and so on, and well she had a fur and a tail so she used this.
The little Furball wiggled because she tried to stand still on the spot, she had no idea she was moving really and still grinning from "ear to ear" at Hachi. "Honey Lemon is-" She bit her lip again, she almost said was her stage name... Huh she shouldn't share that but on the other hand, Orlov-sensei knew she was because of missing classes last year and so on, she was sure the school knew, "A stage name." Which was also why she wanted something else, and Furball it is!
She turned her attention quickly back to Tsutsuji-sensei when she explained about her bag and Honey nodded again but remained standing as her teacher wasn't done explaining. She looked at her as she moved, it was so cool to see Hachi Tsutsuji up close and like talk to her! She would almost bounce but she remained standing on her spot (give her an award for this already) and she looked around, she saw the mat and looked at the space and started to grin again, "Flying?" She asked as if she was a little silly. She shook her head wildly, "No, I don't mind, practice is more important and if this is the best way I can learn, which I believe it is, than I would do anything." Now she finally hobbled off to bring her bag to the bench and get ready for the big try out. She would quickly show up again, made sure her hat was secured, her poofy skirt was fine and her tail and everything. Ready for take-off!

It is possible to fly without motors, but not without knowledge and skill. "Furball?" Hachi sounded more amused than she may have meant to, but the name was so cutesy, even more than the other one. It certainly suited her. Her quick explanation as to where "Honey Lemon" came from made sense as well. "I see. Orlov-kun would likely be the sort to encourage you to keep both your hero name and your stage name the same for 'branding purposes', or some other inane reasoning he has. Furball it is."
If she were an aspiring actress, idol, or whatever else she may also be pursuing outside of UA, it wasn't any of Hachi's business to pry. She wondered if other heroes would try to take on the double-life though. The idea of heroes as celebrities still made her feel...strange. It felt wrong to some extent. They were meant to be law enforcers--it was like turning police officers into idols. At the same time people like Mikhail and Mia had the charisma to perform as they pleased in either role, should they so desire. She did not.
It didn't make her jealous, but they did exhaust her.
"Precisely. Well, let's not waste any time. Would you go up onto the climbing structure there as quickly as you can, and glide onto this mat here?" She gestured with a small roll of her claws. "I would like to see your landing technique--" Or lack thereof, a part of her mind added, "Then we will go from there. I will ask you to repeat the process a few times if you are having any difficulties, but repetition is important when mastering flight." To prove her point just a little, Hachi's wings began to beat. Slowly at first, then until they nearly blurred behind her body. She lifted up a few inches into the air and stayed there, hovering at a comfortable height. "I know your method is quite different than my own, but the basics and safety practices are similar."

Honey moved her little food a bit like circles on the floor, hands behind her back and she looked down with her face but up with her big green eyes at Tsutsuji-sensei, would she say that furball was a bad name? She had not asked a professional hero yet about it, but she had thought it was cute and energetic and something that would fit her. Now she did not read the amusement of Hachi as a good sign, some past experience with her mom had made that clear but right now she wasn't sure if it was bad or not and she nodded because the name was repeated. She nodded, her mother would probably not agree with Orlov-sensei though so she had gone on her own way to find a name that she found nicer than Honey Lemon but she nodded again and looked up with a little smile when Hachi said that it was Furball today. So her name was accepted? Her teacher for today started to explain more about what they would do and she nodded and thought about it while trying to listen very carefully. Although her ears were invisible by the yellow hat that she wore, she was definitely listening carefully. She moved her feet up and down without barely making a sound but she was so energetic that sitting still was almost impossible, she had no idea of herself moving her feet even, she was focused on listening. She looked up, head up high, shoulders down when Hachi said she should go as fast as she could to the structure that stood there, she would almost sprint off but realized her teacher wasn't done yet and she looked with an eager expression on her face to Yellow Jacket, but what followed about her landing technique made her hunch down in her shoulders and look back at the floor. She had no landing technique, her teacher had probably figured that out already by the sports festival, she might have watched it or something alike. "Yes, sensei." she said when Hachi finished and her eyes had lingered on Hachi hovering and she wanted to perfect this, so it was going to work hard for that and she dribbled off to go to the structure and climb on it. She took a moment to take a deep breath and swallow the lump in her throat away. Now, this was the time to show her teacher how she would fail with this! Alright! She would go jump to make her suit go into flight modus and glide forward, she thought about landing by putting her little feet forward when she slowed down, but what happened was that she kept on gliding and in the end fell off the matt on her bump, at least not so harsh but that was not the way.

It is possible to fly without motors, but not without knowledge and skill. Well somebody's had their sugary cereal this morning.
Hachi kept a laugh locked in when Honey jolted towards the climbing structure, only to realize Hachi was still talking and backpedal to listen. She was very energetic and quite how Mikhail had describe her. It would serve her well as a hero, but the inattentiveness was going to need to be ironed out before she got too much further into the year. Hachi watched her climb to the top and make quick prep-work of her hero costume, and then, with a little jump, she was up in the air. It wasn't too long a distance between the mat and the starting spot, but it was enough time for Hachi to take some notes.
Her body looks stiff in flight. Is that from being nervous in front of me, or unsure about her ability to land? In the tournament she was certainly...something, but it's been two months since then. I expect some improve--
Never mind.
Honey landed with a thump right on her tail, and Hachi couldn't physically wince, but she did let out a small "oof" in sympathy. She hovered to the side of the mat. "Would you care to explain your logic behind that, or would you rather I skip straight into giving you advice?"
Whichever Honey responded yes to, she would either listen then speak, or speak immediately. "What you're doing would make sense for somebody who's flying style involves wings similar to mine. However with your suit being styled like a sugar glider, when you tilt your body upwards to put your feet forward, you're catching the wind in your 'wings' not unlike a kite. That will slow you down and trip you up if you're going against the wind, or speed you up and make you miss if the wind is behind you. As less-than-safe as it may sound, I would recommend a landing style where you come in hands-first and move into a somersault. It would be a chance for your 'wings' to retract and won't rely on trying catch your to balance on your feet while moving too fast."
"That said you are more likely to land on your nose while you practice this method than on your tail. But that is why I brought the padded mat. Do you want to try again, using the method I suggested for you?" Hachi gave a small glance at her belongings. "I have hand-pads and knee-pads, if either of those might help you feel less vulnerable to scrapes."

Poof. She slid off and rubbed her ass as she stood up, or well more the back part where her tail connected to her body. She shivered, that has definitely been worse than ever before, the last time she did this she had managed to make a little bit of a better landing and she jumped up to rush to Hachi and apologize for her failure. Honey rubbed the back of her head, trying to make sure her little hat was still there, "I got a little nervous and thought this would be better but in the end, it was worse." She said honestly, it might be considered mumbling on a normal volume for Honey though and she looked at the floor. Moving her right foot a little more into the dirt and grass before looking up at Hachi. This was so embarrassing. Oh, so it wasn't even that bad what she did but just the wrong style? Her big green eyes stared at Hachi as she explained, yes Honey was surprised. She also expected some harder words as her mother always immediately told her what she did wrong and not in this way. She made a silent o sound when Hachi simply continued to explain why it was a dangerous move and she nodded and nodded again. Tsutsuji-sensei so smart, that she saw and explained all after one of Honey's failed ways. She nodded again and thought about it and looked at her hand, "I can try that!" She quickly said, yes, somersault, should be something she should have thought off as that is exactly what happened at the sports festival.
She followed Hachi as she looked at their belongings at the bench. "Oh at least the hand patches please." She would definitely have to work on that making it so that her hands wouldn't scratch open, she lowered them. Honey shouldn't worry, her teacher obviously knew what she was going to do. Trying to remain still as she would wait for the patches, she after that nodded that she would try and sprinted off to the construction again to climb up. She waited for jumping, making sure everything was right, clapping her hands together as to remind herself this was about landing on her hands and just trying not to go face forward. She jumped again down and this time she tried to stop herself by moving her elbows in, to catch less wind, sticking out her hands to the floor and trying to make a somersault. Well... it didn't go so smoothy, she fell sidewards thanks to the wind not being on full speed against her but she should try to get that somersault better. Strange, she was sure she had done that before and jumped up with a small agitated look on her face. "Let me try again, sensei!" She said and quickly ran towards the structure and jumped again. Only during her jump she realized she should have waited for Hachi's advice. Which made her distracted and slip, she made again a weird looking somersault and scratched her head. "A little too enthusiastic." She said to herself, not to the teacher but she went to Hachi and bowed, "Sorry, I thought I got what I did wrong." But not yet.

It is possible to fly without motors, but not without knowledge and skill. Hachi hoped that her inhuman face was demonstrating some manner of calm understanding and not anything else, because she was having a moment's difficulty with talking without a laugh trying to sneak out. It wasn't that Honey was laughably bad--nor was Hachi the sort to laugh at somebody for trying their best--but she was simply so animated and energetic that it contrasted against almost every other person she knew. Except for maybe Mikhail, but Mikhail was far less cheerful than she was. Honey didn't have a mean bone in her body. Mikhail had about four hundred in his tail alone.
"One moment then," Hachi managed to say with as even a tone as ever, and hovered to the bench where she had set aside her equipment. She took two hand-pads from out of the metal box and returned, helping to put them on Honey's hands. Luckily for them both Hachi had very, very slender wrists, so Honey still fit these despite her height; and that they were adjustable to make up for any difference. "Be careful, please."
She really is so cheerful. I wonder what drives her to be that way? It feels too simple to be an act. She is an actress, though, isn't she? I don't want to doubt her.
I've become to paranoid since high school...
Up she went again, and down she came. This time was better if only because she hadn't tried to stop on her feet. It still didn't end in a perfect somersault but that was expected. If she'd gotten it in one, then she would have no need for an internship to begin with. Hachi reached out a thin, clawed hand to help her back up to her feet...only for her to suddenly take off again to try it over. Once again she didn't stick the landing. Hachi sighed to cover the laugh that was still trying to bubble out, and this time did reach for her again. "It's fine to be enthusiastic. While your stance wasn't perfect, you did better than the first time or the second time. When you are coming down try not to curl your body until your hands have touched down. Can you do a hand-stand, or a cartwheel?" Hachi tipped her head forward, "That may be a decent way to practice keeping your balance on your palms, when we are not practicing."

She had in her hurry missed the first time that Hachi extended her hand to Honey as she had sprinted off to try another time and now the second went bad as well. She shook her head, scratched it a little before looking up at Hachi and taking her help to get up and made a small bow to apologize for her running off again. She looked at her hands as she wondered if she could do a handstand or a cartwheel. She had surely did those things in her enthusiasm but really practised that, not really. "I have seen those eh gymnasts do a handstand before going into a slow somersault, is that what you mean?" She asked because she was trying really her very best to imagine what her teacher meant because that was what she would have to focus on. She had to be a little slower so she listened and she took a few steps back and tried a handstand on the ground. She was wobbly, but she managed to do it and nodded to herself, to consider that she would have to train that to practice her landing but she could now try it again. "I try again, right?" Though she felt already that she was getting a little tired from running and climbing up and flying but she would want to make Hachi proud that Honey got what she meant and she would just wait for approval before sprinting off and climb up the construction.
She clapped her hands together to go through the plan and try to visualize it a little better. She would try to stop herself with her hands and lift up her legs slower and try with that to make a straighter roll than she had done now. She would jump again, thank god her suit seemed to hold on and she would watch very carefully where she would land and extend her hands to make use of the hand patches and though she couldn't get her legs as high up as she imagined she made quite a straight roll this time. Still with a poof she got on her butt but that was a lot better and less painful than before. She grinned up to her teacher. "That was fun!" It could still use improvement and maybe this was the one-time lucky chance as she took a moment to propose herself but this was something that made her smile happily.

It is possible to fly without motors, but not without knowledge and skill. "Yes, roughly that, but attempt to tuck into yourself if you feel like you're losing your balance. Best of luck."
Hachi kept her eyes on Honey as again she scampered away. Her climbing capabilities were impressive--did that relate to her Quirk, or simply from her experience with stunt work? She was certain Mikhail's own set of skills hailed from that sort of thing. But doing a stunt where a soft mattress was waiting for you was very, very different from doing the same without one. This training mat wouldn't be here forever. Honey would have to get accustomed to the scrapes that would come along. But before that happened, she had to get the prat fall down. Speaking of which.
This time Honey managed to stick the initial landing and pushed herself over in what could have been a perfect flip...had it stopped at her feet, and not toppled further onto her tail. Still, that was very good progress. Hachi smiled her small, calm smile and nodded. "That was a step in the right direction. Now...you may not like what I am about to say, but..." Hachi tapped her claws at her chest, "Do that again, until you have landed on your feet. Then, until you have landed on your feet three times in a row without accident." If she could, her smile may have gone a little sly, but this was a part of the training as well. "When you have finished, we will try it without the mat. Or, if it has gotten too late, we can move onto that in our next session. Understood?"
She didn't want to sound mean, but she wanted to test the patience of this little bundle of energy, juuust a bit. Sometimes the only way to see a person's best was to try to push them into their worst. Hopefully it'd be fine.

Nothing could really break Honey's spirit. Maybe it was a little of her dense perspective to the world, but she had learned to be always positive, about nearly everything. So she asked, she got it almost right and nodded, which made her happy as Hachi-sensei simply said best of luck and she sprinted off again to try and try and try again. Though at that point she wasn't aware yet that she would have to do it so often more. This time it went a lot better and she sprinted back to her teacher to say it was fine and look forward to her feedback. She looked with her big green eyes at Hachi when she explained that it was good but not good enough and her happy smile turned into a determined expression. Alright, well she was going to make it better in that case and do better and so on. She just frowned, thought about it and nodded, okay, do a couple of times and do it right and right three times before it was done. She nodded though again, she understood and immediately sprinted off again.
Maybe it was the nerves that she had to do it three times in a row but the first time failed, but without grumbling or looking tired, she ran around to climb the construction again and try and try and try. Finally after the fourth time, she managed, but the fifth time failed again. So it was until time nine, ten and eleven in this round that she finally managed. She was tired, you could see it by the fact that she was dragging her hands and feet lower towards the ground, barely getting her feet off the ground so to say but she tried to show an enthusiastic side. "I did it." She said, showing a small but tiring dance and she jumped up once before standing still, holding her hands and holding onto her tail like a soft blanket wrapped around her. She wanted to try without a matt, but she was tired. She had been running around, jumping around and flying about with somersaults extra. "So now without the matt, right?" She wanted to prove she could do this!

It is possible to fly without motors, but not without knowledge and skill. The day continued passing steadily, and through each of Honey's attempts Hachi saw bits of improvement. They didn't always stay, and sometimes a mistake still came and she'd land funny, but her perseverance was quite impressive and made Hachi feel less bad about having her do such repetitive, difficult training repeatedly. She had spirit. She had drive. She had energy. All it felt like she needed was a good direction, and Hachi could see her doing very well in whatever field she ended up choosing in her life. After all, there was little that a non-stop determination couldn't achieve, given time.
Finally, finally, she managed the three landings in a row without error, and Hachi gave her a small applause (small only because the size of her "hands" didn't really allow for greater sound). She almost anticipated that Honey would ask to be done for the day, but given all that she had witnessed, there was no surprise in her when she instead asked for one last try without the mat as protection. Hachi nodded. "Yes. Let me see you do so, and then I believe we can call it here." The sunlight was starting to dip below the tops of the trees; summer had not yet come, and spring was still working to shake off winter's long nights. It wouldn't get cold but Hachi figured it would be best to do this sort of training when there was light enough to see. Night training could wait. With both hands she took up a corner of the mat and folded it over the middle, did the same to the other side, and then dragged it away. She placed it under the bench that their belongings were resting on.
"After this, I believe it would only be fair for me to grant you some manner of reward for all your hard work. And it is getting late. Is there anywhere around here that you would want to get take-out from?" She didn't have the time to sit down to dinner with Honey, but she would happily buy her a meal. She had been expending a lot of energy after all, even if she appeared to be filled with it. "My treat, of course."

She should work hard if she wanted to become better, with missing half a year in her first year and not having a goal until she realized it in her second year, this meant she had to make up and study things and flight was definitely on that list. With the help of Hachi-sensei, she managed to get quite far and when she was finally able to do the three good landings in a row, she hurried to her teacher and grinned happily when she noticed the clapping. She loved this way of teaching, she felt like she really accomplished something. She would help her teacher to remove the mat and she would climb back on the construction and took a few seconds to focus. She had in mind how to do it now and it had gone fine for the last three rounds, so she had to prove she could still do it. She needed to work on her focus and that was exactly what she was going to do now.
So after the few seconds of a break, she would jump off, hover, and would go down to the ground and make the right roll and she jumped up after that and made a little happy dance that she was doing it right. She hugged Hachi quickly (albeit for a few seconds) she followed up with running back to the construction and doing it again and she took again the pause to think before making the right roll again. She was so excited about it but when she sat down on the grass and noticed the sun disappearing behind the treetops and everything, she got hit with exhaustion. When Hachi offered her food, her stomach did a loud impression of a whale and she covered her stomach and smiled, "That sounds amazing!" She thought for a second before pointing out a dumpling take-out restaurant that was close by and that she would like that. She looked up even more surprised when her teacher offered it as a treat and she grinned, beamed and looked happy for forever, this was the best day ever!
