This was it. The big event. It wouldn't be wrong to say that she had been looking forward to it. In fact she did help a bit with some of the preparations, being a class rep. The Sports Festival tournament was upon them and her opponent for the first round was familiar face from class. She grinned. Given that there were only a couple of classes in the first year since the merger the chances of facing a classmate early on had grown. Well she wasn't one to complain about such things but hopefully there would be no hard feelings. She was in this competition to win it and she wasn't going to hold back against acquaintances or friends. After putting on her special suit and gear and finishing up her stretches in the locker room she headed out to the fated battlefield, donning a confident smile amidst the cheers from the audience. While she was still a ways off from the ring she decided to put on a little show. Aura flaring up she would launch herself through the sky from the arena entrance, performing a single flip before diving down near the center of the ring in a stylish fashion. There was winning and there was having fun. And in her book the best way to go about things was to do both. There was something noticeably different today with her look. It would be new to people in UA anyway since she been training with them in secret at home. She was wearing a pair of what looked like arm guards of some sort. Most people would probably assume that they were just an aesthetic update to her costume but there was a little more to them than that. The question was, would she end up using them in this round. After all the longer she kept her cards secret the better her chances at the latter stages of the tournament. How this would go would be totally up to her opponent. Still he biggest change to her look was probably what she held in her hand, no doubt piquing the curiosity of a lot of people present today. She was holding a staff which was quite the big departure from the girl who all this time had only ever sparred hand to hand against her fellow students. But as if to show that she was quite serious and it wasn't a bluff, she would proceed to demonstrate a short staff twirling routine, earning a few ooh's and ahh's before setting it down and waiting patiently for her classmate to make her own entrance. Frankly the field they had to work with was rather small and the little restriction they put on how high you could fly was quite limiting too. She briefly eyed the marker around 15 meters above the ground that indicated where going out of bounds was. As for the ring itself, if she ever went at maximum speed she could easily cross the distance from end to end in a second or less. Really her biggest worry at the moment was trying not to end up outside. In terms of starting positions the two competitors would be around 10 meters apart. Not too far that ranged specialists would have an overwhelming advantage and not too close that close combatants could immediately proceed with a beat down as soon as the bell rang. From what she knew of Mia in their classes, they were both going be engaging in close quarters but who knows if the girl had her own surprises prepared for today. Mia was friends with Shouko after all. Karen would have to watch her very carefully.

Mia's aquamarine eyes took in the shaking of her hands as she waited for the moment it would all begin. To say that she was nervous didn't do the concept justice; she had been stressing over the fight ever since she signed up. It's not like she disliked fighting exactly, but rather the expectations a certain someone kept placing upon her had begun to feel very heavy indeed. You're super strong, Mianon! Everyone is going to be so surprised! That's what Shouko keeps telling me but I really don't think she's right about that. Not to mention her understanding of her classmates' motivations. What had started as a method to escape the confines of the Fischer family manner had culminated in this moment of standing before people earnestly trying to be heroes. She couldn't possibly measure up to such lofty aspirations and the burden of motivation that they presented.
Yet.. she swiftly tightened her hand into a fist willing her hand to stop shaking, even just a little. How could I still stand beside her if I didn't give it my all? She zipped up the unusual diving suit-esque outfit that gave away far too much of her figure for her liking and headed out. Not like her figure was except easy on the eyes, yet she was still nervous of such things. Her tail swished behind her as she left the locker room, betraying a certain eagerness to begin. If you took away all the stress and difficulty of it, this was her core feeling about the fight after all. One does not spend months following Shouko around without developing more than a passing interest in quirks and fighting.
She walked out into the glare and to her surprise a small spattering of applause of her own. Reacting almost instantly to the crowd, she fell into the typical Fischer family style of politely waving back and closed in on her expected start position. Despite that model composure, her heart pounded inside like a drum and her tail swished along to the cadence. This is it. She gazed about the arena taking in every detail she could about the different surfaces she might be playing with in the future. After a bit her eyes finally took in her opponent. Wait, we're allowed weapons?! She thought to herself upon seeing the staff her opponent carried. Whether by a failure to properly read the rules or a lack of interest in the idea, this notion completely confused Mia. Shouko never showed me how to deal with weapons, what do I do? Mia cleared her throat, quieting her thoughts enough to begin speaking and swiftly bowed before the fight could begin. "Please take care of me, Class president." Maybe it wasn't the correct thing to say before attempting to defeat an opponent, but Mia was nothing if not polite. All the while she dreamed of smashing that staff between her jaws for the difficulty it presented to her. The young shark rose from the bow, and loosened up her stance to prepare for the fight. In her mind she swiftly reviewed for one last time everything she knew about Karen's quirk and usual style while waiting for permission to begin.

A polite greeting. Nothing less from the Mia that she knew. Unlike her it didn't seem like her classmate had anything in the way of support gear at first glance. At the back of her head she was expecting something that took advantage of the stealth-like abilities that Mia's quirk provided. But perhaps instead of something tangible the fruits of her classmate's training would be displayed in the form of tactics and strategy. On Karen's end, part of why she brought a staff today was because she was keen on keeping her hands away from those teeth as much as possible. "Likewise Mia-kun~"They would only have to wait a moment before the starting bell signaling the beginning of the match would ring. For now she would test the waters. A rather ironic thought considering she was up against a shark girl. Demonstrating proper wushu form, she would wield her staff to perform a thrust while activating her quirk at the same time. Soaring forward just inches above the ground she would rapidly close in on Mia with the tip of her aura clad staff aimed right at the girl's solar plexus. It was straightforward and no nonsense. Just a simple demonstration of pure speed that she was confident she was a cut above in compared to most of the competitors in this tournament. The goal was fairly simple. A sharp blow to that area was both very painful and also took a lot out of one's breath, while also being fairly 'nonlethal' not that the person pain would think that was much of a consolation. In the meantime she was also curious about how good Mia's reflexes were. Would the girl be able to avoid it or block it? Or would the attack be taken head on? She wasn't aware if her classmate was especially sturdy so there was some risk to a straightforward attack too, one that she would have been less likely to take if she was unarmed. Being one of the more basic moves, Karen was prepared to chain her attack depending on what Mia ended up doing. Should the girl retreat below the ground, Karen would switch up her attack to a downward strike in an attempt to catch her before she completely got away. Should Mia stand her ground, then she would proceed with chaining her attack to a barrage of multiple thrusts to try and overwhelm the girl with speed, power, and technique.

There are so many things Mia would have liked to do, however Karen's speed was really quite breathtaking. With that staff suddenly rocketing towards her she wouldn't be able to get away unscathed. The reach of that staff was truly intolerable and in the split second of thinking time she had she knew she had to close with her opponent. Her body twisted as she pushed forward taking the blow full force on the shoulder. "Ahhh!" She cried out, the natural result of being hit with a rather big stick but she didn't stop moving forward, closer to Karen. Thankfully some degree of natural pain resistance helped out slightly, but the hit went far and above such resistances. This however didn't stop Mia from moving forward, inelegantly struggling towards her goal.
Following that hit was naturally a hailstorm of similar thrusts from the most hateful staff. Mia was trying to deflect what she could using what Shouko had taught her but Karen's speed and technique was quite tyrannical. Acting more on growing frustrations than any particular tactical plan Mia made a grab for the staff all the while continuing to take hits whenever possible with that same left arm. Quit it! quit it! quit it! quit it! owwwwwwwwww! The young shark repeated in her mind as the pain built further and further, knowing full well that an arm did not serve as a good buckler as hers took repeated hits.

As it turns out Mia was a much braver soul than Karen gave the girl credit for. Perhaps her classmate was just more bold when it came to fighting and if not, then it was also likely that Shouko's enthusiasm may have rubbed off on the girl too. In any case her opponent was perfectly willing to take some hits, but choosing how to take them. Karen would give Mia that. Any damage anywhere was good enough for her early on in this match. She certainly wasn't going to complain if the competition was down one arm. And yet despite taking hits there was a lot of skill involved in the motions. Perhaps if Karen wasn't faster, their martial arts abilities wouldn't be too far apart. While the damage was evident, the girl still wasn't backing down and even pressing on. This was quite impressive mental fortitude. It made her wonder if Mia had some measure of pain tolerance to be able to keep this up. In any case Karen tried to match the girl's movements by backing up in tandem with her thrusts 'increasing' the distance Mia had to advance to reach her. She wasn't going to give up her weapon advantage easily. That is until another unexpected thing happened. She couldn't believe it at first because that was not move someone would normally attempt unless they were absolutely confident in their skill over whoever they were fighting. Was it a desperate move then? But Mia grabbing her weapon opened up a different set of opportunities. Rather than try to swat her classmate's hand away Karen had a different idea. As soon as Mia had a solid grip on her staff, she would stop hovering and plant her feet firmly on the ground to give herself a solid base. Meanwhile her classmate would suddenly find her aura quickly extend from the staff to cover the girl's own body. After all anything Karen was 'in contact with' was engulfed with her aura to allow her to carry them up with her quirk. And then with all her strength she would swing her staff upward, with girl grabbing it included in an attempt to toss her classmate up high in into the air. Was it five or maybe even seven meters high? Karen's strength at this point was no joke and could easily perform the tossing feats that a whole cheer squad needed to work together to achieve. And with her quirk 'shaving off' some of the weight of her passenger this was made even more simple. Should she be successful, she now had helpless target in midair and she was not going to let this moment go to waste. She would rapidly fly up to where Mia was and deliver a full swing of her staff, to attack while keeping her classmate from falling down. It was a basically a real life air juggle. Being up in the air meant she had the freedom of motion to swing from almost any direction to keep up the juggle. She was curious to see how Mia would handle it.

Much to the young shark's surprise she actually caught hold of the staff, not quite connecting that it had slowed down for a moment to allow her to do that. Unfortunately, much like a dog chasing the spinning tires of a car, she had no idea what to do with it now that she had it. Her friend and mentor would no doubt have had some bombastic idea but Mia was still very much new to the idea of fighting someone else. Thus it was that when she had come up with an idea of what to do next, Karen had already landed and began her swing. Mia's entire body was swiftly lifted into the air as she held on for dear life to the end of the staff. "Ahhhhhhhhh!" She cried out, more than a little startled to suddenly be airborne.
However a thought occurred to her that while she may not be in a position to neutralize the staff as an issue, she was still in a position to close the gap swiftly. When the upwards throw stopped it's momentum Mia pulled with all the might her still intact arm could provide firing her body towards Karen. Instinctively using a method she had practiced with Shouko, Mia attempted to bring a kick to bare.

She had been fairly confident of the plan and moves she visualized beforehand, so you could imagine her surprise when things didn't quite turn out as expected. From the moment her opponent was successfully able to hang on despite her attempt to throw the girl up with all her might, she knew that she had just opened herself up for a nasty counterattack. After all from that position, both her hands were occupied while her foe had both legs and a tail free to act. And then she saw it coming. Using the momentum from her failed toss, Mia was winding up for a kick. The girl had been much stronger than she had anticipated. Even with her shield up there was no telling if it would be enough to keep her safe from the incoming impact. She needed to make a split second decision to abandon her weapon to guard or take the hit on and ultimately the latter won. Being the kind of person that she was, she couldn't allow herself to show any less tenacity than her opponent so far. Mia honestly deserved some praise. The second reason was the fact that her classmate aimed for and wouldn't let go of her weapon. This could only mean that for the girl it was just that much of a threat. At least that's how Karen interpreted. Now of course she wasn't just going to smile and take the hit. As a martial artist, it wasn't as though she was completely out of options. A kick to the face even if she could take it was still going to daze her a bit. In that case she would have to 'take' it some other way. She leaned her head back and timing it with Mia's kick, she met the girl's foot literally head on with a headbutt. She felt the pressure, but because she pushed back she didn't lose her balance though it did leave her a bit shaken. It seemed her shield managed to hold though, but that was probably going to leave a bump. Still there was no time to rest or let up. Hoping that her counter caught her opponent by surprise, she would use this opportunity to just outright take this to the skies. If Mia would continue to hold on despite that, then she suddenly start spinning at high speed, both to try and make her opponent dizzy and to build up momentum to throw the girl out of the ring. This time she would be very much willing to let her weapon go if it meant winning the match.

To say that Mia was operating on anything more complicated than simple trained instinct would be a bold faced lie. The girl had never truly been part of a fight and the tactics that went into it escaped her mind completely. Thus, she was almost entirely stunned to see Karen stop her kick with her forehead of all things. Despite her best attempts to keep a mindset of fighting, she was almost overwhelmed with a sudden desire to ask 'oh my goodness are you okay?' A left arm that was the mildest suggestion away from breaking entirely and she was more concerned with the person she just kicked in the face.
Still, the fight waited for no shark and in her stunned state she had let the precious staff slip from her fingers. Gravity pulled down on her body and instinct took over as she slipped beneath the surface of the ring. Into the quiet darkness of solid's made liquid she sank and slowly Mia recovered her precious composure. Her tail swished and propelled her through the ring as she tried to figure out a good 'next move'. There was surprisingly a slight ache in her leg from the kick that left her wondering things. Regrettably she began, What would Shouko do? And why is Karen's head so hard?

It seemed before she could attempt to do anything her opponent decided to finally let go. This wasn't really something within her control but after being so persistent about it she was curious about the change of heart. In any case Mia wasted no time in finally putting into practice the girl's own specialty which was swimming underground. Meanwhile she continued to hover a few meters above the ring. They really had the most incompatible match-up of this tournament in Karen's opinion. If both of them were to focus on what they were best at, neither would ever reach the other and that would make for quite the boring fight. In other words the only way to keep things exciting and progress the battle further was for one to deliberately infringe on the other's territory. It was risky ploy for obvious reasons but Karen was the type to enjoy such challenges. She wouldn't always be in a position where she was at an advantage so she might as well push the boundaries of that now when there was plenty of room for error. She would float down to the very center of the ring and do something that most people watching might find weird. At least it wasn't immediately obvious why. She would set the staff down on the ground standing perfectly straight. Afterward she would cross her legs and sit on top of it like some sort of balancing act. Well she was really slightly cheating as with her quirk activated the weight that she had to consciously balance was almost none. But at the same time she wasn't really floating. It was somewhere in between. As for the reason why she would take this position, well let's just say she didn't come here today without thinking up of a few strategies. The question now was would the fish take the bait.

If Mia could sigh, she would have. Karen was proving to be an impossible opponent, the young shark could feel defeat was an inevitability. However, simply giving up was not something she could be proud of. So after a time, she swiftly popped her head out and witnessed Karen's unusual position. Naturally she dove underneath the surface immediately afterwards, and began her attack run.
While the idea of a staff being the only thing in her attack range should have probably sent off warning alarms in her head, Mia had really no other options. Trying to do an aerial stunt against someone like Karen would be laughably arrogant. She could only hope to bring the battle further into her domain if she wanted to even make a good showing of herself.
With such thoughts the furthest from her mind, she focused only on what she could do in the moment. With the position of her target confirmed just moments ago, Mia dove out of the surface of the arena. She was perpendicular to the staff, swiftly attempting to close her jaws on it and drag the staff and whatever was holding on to it down into the depths. If she was lucky, perhaps this fisher would hook more than they could possibly reel in when it came to this fish. In the instance that she was going to lose this tug of war, she could always solidify the ground around her preventing Karen from flying off with her.

What she hoped to accomplish with her unusual position was to narrow down the places that Mia could likely pop out from. The girl had already shown considerable interest earlier in trying to deprive her of her staff. It wouldn't be weird to assume then that given the chance, her opponent would attempt to do so again. And this was indeed a tempting offer. She kept a close eye out below as with Mia's talents it was extremely difficult to pinpoint her position until she chose to reveal herself. Sure enough the girl would try to go for her staff again. What she didn't expect was that Mia would make use of the jaws that the shark girl was more famous for. It was an interesting to choice to be honest. She wondered if it was because Mia had more confidence biting down on her target than simply grabbing. But Karen wasn't going to let this happen without making a move of her own. As soon as she saw and felt the fish bit, she would shift her position to deliver a powerful kick to the staff, sending the force through the weapon. It might have snapped in half if her aura wasn't protecting it but this was one way to attack without actually swing the staff herself. From the earlier exchange Mia took significant damage from her attacks. Hopefully her classmate's mouth was sturdier, lest the girl be at risk of losing a few teeth. Should this be enough to make Mia let go then she would once again pull up her staff and then attempt to quickly thrust down before the girl could retreat underground to follow up. Should her opponent be stubborn about letting go yet again then she had no choice but to continue striking the staff to damage the shark girl that way, while also tugging back. She wasn't going to allow Mia to sink her staff so easily.

Mia had been somewhat surprised that she seemed to manage to pull the staff a bit, though it quickly became clear that this was well within Karen's plans. The staff seemed to swing back as a large force was applied directly to her mouth, heartlessly breaking a few teeth. Mia would have coughed blood had she not been under the surface of the ground yet it was still more than enough of a shock to her that she let go of the frustrating staff and pushed away from it. This had the effect of removing her aura of liquefying surfaces from around the staff but far more importantly of distancing herself from the hateful weapon. Mia winced as something struck her side, no doubt the staff had been yanked out, it's not like a pole would be difficult to remove from the ground. I am truly outclassed Everything she tried or attempted seemed to be defeated before she could even get started, and that distance seemed almost impossible to cross.
That isn't to say she would simply give up, but the damage was really beginning to pile up. She popped her head above the surface for the barest of moments far to the left of Karen to note her position and spit out a few bloody teeth. With a dive she went under again. Swiftly moving to an area behind Karen. Frustration was beginning to take over, and she wanted so desperately to actually land a hit. Once more she breached the surface with speed, popping above the surface and getting reasonably airborne. This time she aimed a vicious swing with her good arm directly at the Karen's pretty face.

While she didn't exactly see the damage done because her opponent did try to sink her staff pretty quickly, she felt the impact from the other end of the weapon after she delivered her blow. The grip on it would subsequently loosen up for a moment only to be stuck yet again. Her classmate's quirk was truly an interesting one being able to liquefy and solidify the ground at will like that. Her first thought was just to break off the tip since the stick wasn't all that sturdy by itself anyway. Much of its durability was thanks to her quirk. But thinking on it, she hadn't really lost her advantage just yet. In fact with the difference of the tip of her staff being partially sunk in the ground, they were still relatively in the same position as earlier. The question was where would Mia attack from next. A blind spot perhaps? She cautiously started looking around. She didn't know if her classmate could see her while hiding underground but Karen herself definitely couldn't spot the shark girl beneath the surface. She couldn't fly too high as that would defeat the purpose of baiting her opponent to take the offensive but at the same time she couldn't stick too close to the ground lest she be at risk of getting dragged under altogether. It seemed she would not have to wait too long though. The initial approach came from behind but as Karen turned to look in her attacker's direction, she couldn't help but feel that the girl was aiming to hit her in the face. Mia had popped up so suddenly that she was slightly caught off guard. With no time to pull out her weapon, she had no choice but to make use of her hands. She raised her left arm to guard her head while flying backwards to lessen the overall impact. Meanwhile she would use her free hand to try and grab Mia's punching arm as it made contact. Should she be successful, she would change the direction of her flight to go straight up, taking the shark girl as far up from the ground as possible. This time it would be her turn to be persistent about not letting go. On the bright side for her opponent, this meant leaving her staff on the ground. From there she would spin the girl around, threatening to throw her out of the ring. Should she be unsuccessful with grabbing, she would pivot from her position to deliver a spinning kick at the airborne Mia instead, aiming to knock her away.

Mia's attack was blocked by yet another well timed maneuver by Karen. Again! What does it take to have an effect?! However, it seemed that hateful staff was no longer a concern and she had finally closed to a distance she could actually have an effect in. Before she could pull her hand back for another swing it was caught by Karen's grab and held firmly. With two hands she might have been able to escape but with only one functioning hand she simply would not be able to flee back into the ground. Her mind settled on an instinctive choice, pulling a move from memory that her dear friend had given her quite the fright with.
Her tail swung behind her for momentum to bring her body closer to Karen and she attempted to wrap both of her legs around the girl before they ascended too far. Without even seeing if grabbing the girl was going to work, she heartlessly opened her jaws and lunged her face towards the girl in a vicious bite. The kind and caring young girl had at last been blinded by her desperation to have an effect, to prove that she belonged here. That she belonged by her side. A clear look into that maw showed a bloody mess, some teeth broken, but most of them seemed fine, yet the blood still oozed from the missing ones. A vicious contrast between that and the normally demure young shark.

A certain upperclassman once told her that grabbing someone stronger than you was generally a bad idea. It seemed she would have to update that rule to include people of relatively same strength. In this case yet again Karen's plans of sending her opponent out of the ring were foiled by the girl's tenacity and grit. On their way up she suddenly found Mia's wrapped around her with what she assumed was a desperate act to not get thrown away. Did her classmate read her mind? By the time they got to a decent height, Mia had begun to just chomp on her seeing as the girl didn't really have any other functional means of attack from that position. Karen shifted her right arm, the one grabbing Mia's wrist, up a little to guard her face thereby being subjected to the shark girl's biting. While her shield held on for the first chomp, the force from subsequent ones were gradually going through. She was even starting to wince a bit. Throwing her opponent was out of the question so she had to attack the girl directly. With her free left hand she would deliver the hardest liver shot she could muster in an attempt to incapacitate her classmate right there. If that didn't work then she would simultaneously dive down to try and crash Mia to the ground. Except she wasn't exactly aiming for the ground. Knowing Mia's quirk it's entirely possible they would both sink in and that would put her in a bad spot. Instead she would head for the staff that was left upright there. She didn't know the exact rules of the shark girl's liquefying quirk but she assumed something as thin as a staff would give Mia trouble seeing as there was never any attempt to liquefy the staff itself when it was grabbed earlier. Karen's intention was to drive it onto the girl's back or rather the other way around. This would probably end up breaking the weapon though as it was currently unprotected by her aura. Whether it was this move or the liver shot, hopefully one of them would end up working to finish this once and for all.
