It had been a year. One year since the greatest humiliation of his life- He, Ren Zhenya. He, who had defeated Japan's U12 Shogi champion at the ripe age of 9. He, the highly praised star student of Fenghuang high... Had lost. He had fallen in the first round of battle, no less- And were his opponent to have won the tournament, perhaps he would not hold such a grudge. And yet, she had lost. For a man as rational as Ren, he rarely displayed emotion. But even he could not help but roar at the news- "What do you mean, she. Isn't. Coming."
That was right. Kurama Rin. UA's former number one, had quit while she was ahead. This past year, he had been training. Practicing. Working hard just for the sake of showing her up... And she was GONE!? Unforgiveable! A sneer rose across his face as his classmates found excuses to be anywhere but here. He was known for his arrogance, and for his skill which backed that up. But in this case, his bottom line had been crossed- And the person whom he wished to take it out on. Why, she wasn't there, was she?
Nor could he even defeat the one who had defeated her, thus proving his superiority by proxy. These Japanese dogs... "Are they looking down on us!?" He roared at anyone who was too slow to escape. Well, that would be the natural assumption. After all, of their top students- Had they not only sent that Shindou Tetsuko? Hah, that samurai... What a joke. "They think they can defeat us, without even sending their best? I'll show them not to underestimate Fenghuang!"
They say that absence makes the heart grow fonder, and in this case, it seemed to be true. Ren assumed that in the past year, the top students of UA remained unchanged as his own position had- And that Kurama Rin and Daimon Darren still stood at their peak. How would he react, should he find out that they were not only absent, but had given up on UA entirely? His wrath would surely not extend merely to his unfortunate classmates in that scenario.
However, he quickly calmed himself. Acting on emotion was not rational- And without logic, he was nothing. A cold look once more rose over the boy's face. Very well. If UA would not provide their very best, he would punish them for their hubris. "I'm going out." It was not a request.
Valiant Institute had so kindly provided their training facilities, it would be rude not to use them. Rather than take out his anger on his classmates, it would be far more productive to channel it into his training. Ever the rational one. A line of test dummies stood before him, a staple of heroic training. But not for long. His fingers would swiftly separate from his hands, each flying towards a separate dummy. His calculations were perfect, as usual. Pop. Five headless dummies slumped to the floor. An impassioned face looked down on the wrecks, unconcerned at the destruction of Valiant's property. Such was the fate of those who challenged the number one.
However, coincidence is as coincidence does. And he was not the only one with an interest in training this day. A face he remembered from last year- "Oh, it's you. UA must really be looking down on the world, to send you in place of their best." He said impassively. His words were the truth. Of the sixteen entrants last year, Feng Yao was without a doubt... The weakest. He held no greater expectations for her this year than the one previous. "The world has no place for weak heroes. Be glad that you chose those island mutts over your home, for in Fenghuang, we are not so tolerant." Despite all evidence to the contrary, Ren was convinced that their way was correct. Those who slacked off deserved no better than expulsion. There was no purpose in training those with no talent.
Even the embarrassing defeat the previous year could not shatter this self-centered worldview.

How did I even get into a situation like this
Feng would ask herself as she would roll her eyes at one of the students from the Chinese Academy. Of all people to run into, of course it would be the most rotten one of the bunch. Though his name escapes her as more or less recuperating during that time and she couldn't watch any of the matches. Faintly she does recall a someone losing to one her previous class president at the time but it was foggy and she was still new at the time.
As to how she got herself into a situation like this, she would do her usual routine as she would train to her absolute limits to prep for the festival. She couldn’t sit still or keep her thoughts stagnant as she wanted her body moving. So she put on her training outfit and would go to the Vailent Institute’s training area. However things would soon go wrong as she was met with a chain of explosions in the distance and attracting the attention of the set student. First impressions of him can be usually summed as “What a fucking asshole” or something like that. Even her meaner opponents were bit more elegant with their words but not this dude.
His words would bounce off her as she was used to dealing with people like him already. She would look around and get the creak out of her neck as would wait for him to finish his rather cliche’d speech. Part of her wanted to punch him in the mouth to shut him up but another wants to ask him about certain people pertaining to an incident that happened in japan a few months back. Something that involved one of their own attempting to take her life. While it was a gamble and chance, she just needs to confirm her suspicions to say the least. One way or another, this dude is going to slip up and say some important info. People like him tend to do that once their exterior that was prickly as a sea urchin shatters and they become children. But she would simply take a deep breath and stretch before giving the dude the attentiion he was asking for with her own way.
“...Who are you again?”, she would bluntly ask. Not saying it out of spite or anger, but out of genuine curiosity as she wasn't awake to see any of them.

"Not researching your opponents. Illogical." Would come the almost mechanical response. The battle started well before the festival. Researching your opponent. Learning their quirk. Their moves. Their mentality. From this, a plan of action could always be calculated. Checkmate was inevitable. This was why he was the shogi prodigy of his generation. Why he was Fenghuang's star student. And why he had no reason to expect defeat in these coming days. Feng Yao's attitude said it all. UA hadn't even bothered to research the other for schools. If it were Huang Lan or Fan Lang that this Japanese girl failed to recognize, he would understand. Even he had hardly looked into Feng. With the rosters not being released until the last second, there had been no point in studying a third rate student with a fourth rate quirk.
His other arm would raise. There was no point in wasting training time on this weakling, who seemed destined to make it no further this year than the last. If he had a low impression of her after her dismal showing the previous year... Her blatant lack of preparation for the tournament placed her at the lowest of the low. Such a student should be expelled, lest they bring the school's level down on the whole. This time, his entire arm would separate at the elbow, flying as his fingers had, before exploding in a blast that incinerated the remains of the target dummy. The metal robot was left without a trace, testament to the sheer power of Ren Zhenya's quirk. Power and precision. The two weapons that would allow him to overcome his defeat of a year prior.
However, he would deign to introduce himself. "My name is Ren Zhenya." The boy would say coldly, as though that held all the weight it needed. Even if she did not recognize his face, his name should be familiar, no? If she did not even know that... Hah. UA truly had sent their weakest students in response to the world's best. Anything less than utter dominance would be unacceptable. Once he returned, he would have to supervise his teammates. Especially that Cheng. It was amazing he ranked as highly as he did, given that he slacked at every opportunity. If they lost due to his attitude, then there would be no forgiveness this time. "I will be Fenghuang's representative in this festival. A fact you would be aware of, had you done even the minimum preparation."

Why do you sound like you came right out of a space opera?, Feng would retort as she would snicker a bit at his way of speaking. Like the dude sounded like he came out of an old sci-fi series made in the 80’s. Can't remember the name of it but this dude was giving off those vibes as he would stand like he has a stick up his ass. Since the only students who met him are gone, she has zero clue on how to even interact with this asshole. He is a more high strung Darren if one would make an apt comparison.
Anyways, she would watch him just use his quirk which was interesting if it weren't for his personality being more detestable than a Tasmanian devil. Obvious observation points to his quirk working off explosives as he would turn every single dummy in scrap in mere seconds. Though after seeing Yumi and other emitters at UA, his wasn't exactly something to write home about. However saying that out loud would be like poking Tsuji with a stick. His personality reminds me of the Tao that attacked her a while back. A troublesome incident that led to some….unfortunate discoveries that she needs to confirm. Since he goes to the academy he may have some clue as to who Tao is. But it could be a common name so she'd need to pry a bit before she could get a proper answer. Though she could have chosen a better target than the walking fireworks store in front of her.
He would give his name and she would retort again with a, “Never asked for your name but sure do that”, as she would make it apparent that this dude was liked. He seems like the type to never get a wife under the guise of none of them are worthy of his seed or something. It may not be true but his personality screams insecurities written all over. Like in bright neon and under a dark light type obvious. Though visible shock would paint her face as she would learn of his role. She almost felt sorry for him if it weren't for the fact he was born with a stick up his ass.
“If you’re the rep...that must mean your school has stupid standards if common decency aint one of them…”, she would add on as she would start stretching for her run as she originally planned as she would try and get out of this situation quickly as she could. One may fear the almighty lecture on why our school is better than your school. Throw in a few dozen references to historical events, talks of numbers and comparisons of students and so on. It was bog standard deal that she has zero tolerance for right now as she has things on her mind to run off and no time to deal with the walking new years decoration. The brain has demons and the legs needs movin.

The Chinese student would ignore the other's mockery. He had not come here to be mocked for his speech. Not the least of which by one so... Inferior. However, his lips did curl up nonetheless. "You hide your failings behind humor. But in evading my point, you prove it. You fail to do even the most basic of research, and yet you wonder why you fall behind. Such arrogance, UA." The boy would reply calmly. However, he continued to misunderstand. UA did not withold Rin and Darren to say that the Japanese school would win even without its top students- But because those so called top students were no longer with UA. His own pride had blinded him, a refusal to accept the rumors he had heard.
However, like a child poking a hornets nest, the Japanese student continued to wheedle. "You asked who I was." The arrogant boy would state, looking down on the girl. Of course, he should have expected no less from this fool who abandoned her homeland for that island nation... She had no pride. Would discard whatever she had said, for it did not fit her narrative. And yet that foolishness would become her downfall... He rarely was the type to revel in schadenfreude, but he anticipated seeing this one's pride ground into the dirt. From what he had seen, she hardly stood a chance in the festival.
Similarly, he would ignore her attempts to taunt him. Decency, a crutch for the weak. "At Fenghuang, we know to respect the strong. Something UA has clearly failed to instill in its students." Hmm, come to think of it, weren't there a few news stories about UA students encountering villains and foolishly attempting to face them? There was only one outcome for the weak. If they won, there was no problem... But did they even consider the ramifications if they lost? Well, if it was him... He would not have broken a sweat.

“And yet I heard your ass lost against one of our own...not much for following that saying when you can’t take a loss, hm? Humor seems to be your strong suit with the stick up your ass and everything.”, she retorts as she would look at her nails as the Zen here starts to look more and more pathetic. The previous heavy hitters may be gone, but there was no way in hell they got weaker with the lineup they have now. If pride had a face and body, this motherfucker is a strong contender to be a living example of that.
“Yes I did ask, but that doesn't mean I should care. If your school was so good, then explain why your school is second rate compared to ours. “, she would retort yet again as she cracked her knuckles. This dude is seriously pissing her off with the amount of smack talk he's putting out. Were all students from that academy this arrogant? The Tao from before would be the first example and now she has another example. Are they all so punchable or is it just her luck messing with her? Either way, the next dozen words that come out of this dudes mouth is gonna get a good kick to the face. She is not the type to explicitly hate someone from the get go but this dude demeanor and actions is making it real hard to hold back her temper. Her blood was absolutely boiling with his remarks about UA, so striking back with her own was the best she could do as she would think on her next response. The dude is on his high horse, but she knows that he can;t take it forever. Types like him always enjoy to lord his presence like hes some kind of king.
“I swear, first a grasshopper girl with an inferiority complex and now I have the self proclaimed top dog who is overcompensating trying to talk big…”, she slung at Ren as she would glare at him. Daring him to make the first move and hoping he does. Grounds for self defense and by god she needs an excuse to beat his ass down. She was recovered from her spar with Yumi so she knows she can take whatever he throws at her. Speed is her game and few dozen fire crackers aint gonna scare her off.
