In the old days before pro heroes, before UA, there were those few individuals who took it upon themselves to try to fight back against the increasing wave of crime. With quirks on the rise, it would be tougher for the law to maintain peace and order, with police officers having trouble stopping crimes that used to be easy to take care of just a few decades ago. Because while quirk use was illegal, that did not stop the criminals from using their power to torment civilians and hold their own against the cops. It was clear that the old ways of dealing with crime were insufficient for this new age. So a few brave and just individuals decided to fight fire with fire. Or in this case, fight quirks with quirks. The first of the heroic individuals who would be labeled as vigilantes.
This is the story of two of these early vigilantes. The duo who would come to be known as the Beetle Brothers.
The Beetle Brothers were two mutant twins who were active from 2060 to 2066. As the name implies, the duo had beetle quirks. The older brother, Kabuto Mushi, resembled a humanoid rhinoceros beetle. The younger brother, Kuwagata Mushi resembled a humanoid stag beetle. With the fear and hate of quirks being commonplace in this time period, the two would often stick in the shadows, not making public appearances unless absolutely necessary. Despite this, however, the two had a strong sense of justice, stemmed from the fact that their parents were police officers who were unfairly killed while trying to stop some rampaging quirked criminals. The two would not hesitate to step out of the shadows, beat down any troublemaker, then disappear before the police could so much as catch a trace of the duo.
For years, Kabuto and Kuwagata would combat the waves of villainy that seemed to keep on coming endlessly. Their awe-inspiring battles became the stuff of legends, with the brothers gaining a cult following. Kids at school were quietly and excitedly talking about the Beetle Brothers behind their teachers' backs. As the duo did their work anonymously, with only their appearances being the sole hint to their existence, nobody would know their names. Thus the term was coined. Naturally, there was plenty of myths mixed in along with the facts. Some of their feats became comparable to those of comic book heroes. Clearly, the two brothers did not take down Kamirex by suplexing the Moon. Still, their feats (both real and exaggerated) would be passed around. Soon, it would not be uncommon for the average person to at least be familiar with the name 'Beetle Brothers'. Plenty of fan art, articles, and even a movie was made to honor the duo. Of course, with the brothers only caring about the people being safe from villains, they had no interest in their rising popularity. Let people make up all the stories and merch they wanted. Kabuto and Kuwagata did not care.
With the brothers' rising popularity, the police would naturally begin to look into these two individuals. Of course, vigilantism was illegal, and so there was no way that the twins would be allowed to roam around stopping crime unimpeded. They had to be brought in. Of course, neither Kabuto nor Kuwagata had any interest in opposing the police. They only fought criminals, after all. Still, they did not wish to get arrested either. Being locked up meant that they could not continue fighting crime. So whenever the police did show up, the two brothers would naturally flee.
One fateful day in May of 2066, the Beetle Brothers were just wrapping up taking down a local gang. However, the police had arrived on the scene before the brothers could make their escape. Fleeing seemed unlikely, and fighting for their freedom was something neither brother would ever consider doing. So with a sigh, Kabuto and Kuwagata accepted their fate and allowed the cops to cuff them without a fight.
But then the whole group were ambushed. Eleven thugs with quirks had shown up and attacked everyone. Seeing the cops' weaponry doing nothing against the thugs' armor, scales, muscles, thick skin, etc. Not wanting the officers to die in this hopeless struggle, the two brothers nodded, and with all of their strength, broke the cuffs that bound them. With a roar, the two began to fight back. It was a harsh battle. The duo did not escape this unscathed. But slowly and surely, they overpowered the eleven thugs and managed to bring them down.
Unfortunately, it was not a clean victory. Two of the officers had lost their lives, with four sustaining serious injuries. The only reason Kabuto and Kuwagata managed to escape was because the remaining officers were either too busy restraining the thugs, or too injured to pursue the vigilantes. Despite taking the criminals down, the brothers lamented their failure to protect the lives of those officers. They questioned their ability to fight crime if they could not stop even a single person from dying. So the two brothers departed...
...and disappeared, seemingly for good.
The brothers' 'retirement' greatly saddened many of their fans, upset that such a powerful duo were no longer around. As the years went on by, the brothers and their heroic actions would soon be forgotten to the public, like a fad that became popular only to fade away in time. Only the most hardcore underground fans, the few vigilantes that followed who had heard of the duo's feats and were inspired by them, and those whose lives were saved due to the brothers' actions would remember them. A small ray of hope appeared years later with the new pro hero system. With some vigilantes going over to serve and uphold the law, some hoped that the brothers would step out of the shadows to do the same. No such luck, as nobody had seen or heard anything about them again.
To this day, no one knows what became of the Beetle Brothers. Were they dead? Did they simply leave the country? Were they arrested? Were they simply retired and doing their best to live normal lives? Or were the brothers still around, hiding in the shadows and biding their time, waiting for the perfect moment to make their comeback? Perhaps one day, the answer to those questions will be made clear. But until then, the Beetle Brothers live on in the memories of those few who still remember them.
