There was something about this trip that felt different. It was an odd feeling, and yet not entirely unpleasant either. Wandering around the festival grounds Elise had taken some time to visit the various booths, although she had not exactly a solid purpose or goal in mind. No, perhaps she had merely been passing the time, even if her mind was occupied with more serious thoughts. The familial hardships her lover had been facing required a delicate approach, and while Elise did her utmost to support her, it was, in the end, a problem that Tetsuko herself would need to resolve. However, the more time passed, the more she felt that something was changing. It was difficult to describe in her own words. It first started with her feelings toward Tetsuko. Although she was still very affectionate toward her during their moments together, Elise had come to realize she had grown much less possessive over her lover. Perhaps it was a sign that their relationship had matured so much that she could learn to treasure the moments they shared together, rather than having to constantly be with one another. Although she had to admit a certain event that occurred during her birthday might have been part of what led to this development. The knowledge that even if physically apart, they would always be connected emotionally, was an endearing something for the Germanic lass, and it only made her realize all the more how much they cared for one another.
But it also caused something else to be nurtured. A certain resolve that had been stirred within her since the day her mentor died. Kiryu had left his legacy in her hands, the role of Spymaster was hers to inherit, and yet Elise was not entirely certain just how she could do this. To act amidst the shadows to protect society was a difficult task, and Elise had learned just how impactful the act of killing could be, not just in terms of the victim's social life. After all, the victim would leave certain things behind, connections and bonds, whether they be family, lovers, subordinates or comrades, and they surely would be affected by it. Some say that one of the most natural consequences of this is the search for retribution, something she had known first-hand when Thunder Shock's men killed her father, but that was not where the complications ended. The psychological consequences killing had on a person could be even worse. In the days that followed that night, Elise felt constantly haunted, not just by her deed, but also by the feeling she had failed her master. It were burdens she had been forced to acknowledge and carry on her shoulders, and what frightened her was the awareness she would not hesitate to do it again if it meant saving those dear to her.
How far are you willing to go to protect those dear to you?
A question often asked as a moral theme in plenty of fiction, and yet it seemed like the question had such a special meaning for Elise, it made her realize that no sacrifice was too great to protect Tetsuko, and that made Elise come to terms with the fact she was not suited for being a hero. She was too selfish, and in a certain way even too cruel to be a hero. And yet, it didn't mean she was a bad person, for Elise simply cared, she cared too much. In the days that followed her departure from the hero academy Elise grown to acknowledge that her desire to help people was still there, she wanted to improve the hero program's efficiency not just to support Tetsuko, but also to aid the people she had come to know those past two years. Kirk, Darren, Akio, Yojin, Haruuhi, so many people she wanted to help in her own way.
It was for that reason she had decided to invest so much effort in her work at the Public Safety Commission, wanting to improve her supportive skills so she could help ensure that in the future the least amount of casualties would be made during missions. Which means as little errors as possible, almost even a perfectionist attitude.
Nonetheless, that was not the only reason she had been there. The threat that lurked in the shadows was still there. The awareness a spy associated with the Plutocracy had infiltrated the hero oversight committee was worrying, to say the least, and so far the clues were still too spread out and too little for her to get a proper impression on who this treacherous villain might be. Not that it would help her to worry about such things at this time, no far from it. She had to focus on the festival, after all, she had joined it as a member of the Public Safety Commission delegation, and while Nana and Heaven on High were more than willing to give her some free time to enjoy the festivities, Elise couldn't entirely shake off the feeling of responsibility. Perhaps that was why even during her break, seated on a bench in the festival grounds, with an hot-dog in one hand and a handheld device in the other, the Eisenberg lass was quietly touching the keypad on the device while taking small bites from the hot-dog. For now she was simply doing some reviewing of the upcoming events. It appeared there would be an exhibition tournament soon, which she was certain of would be an event Tetsuko wouldn't miss. With the girl's grandfather present it was clear she would try her best to give him a good fight to spectate, but she wasn't sure yet about who her opponent would be. At least Elise was certain that this time, if her lover did something crazy again during her fights like last year, Elise would be able to properly treat her. After all, she had improved a lot in her medical skills.
However, a familiar face showed herself wandering around the area she was at, making Elise raise her head lightly as she smiled briefly at her. "Haru-chan?"
