The festival is here but Jin can't be arsed to participate in the activities. But he needed the fresh air and needed to find more visual references for gadgets. So he would use his free time to get ready in his usual attire and then head out into the festival to see anyone interesting. Tuning his headphones to a nice frequency so he can hear the world just fine and just vibe with the atmosphere. He would take a small satchel and pack his sketchbook along with robotics guide for beginners and a laptop. Packing some tea and some snacks for his brain as he would stumble out. He would yawn as he does as he is still quite groggy from the all nighter he pulled before.
He would leave the dorms and then make his way down to a nice spot in the school that would be perfect for people watching and taking a nap. However he would slowly make his way there and attempt to try and find such a spot but it would prove a bit more troublesome than he initially thought and he would take a seat on a nearby tree and then just relax while listening to music.
“These foreigners...they seem so diverse in their quirks...should i draw or should I hmmm”, Jin would think to himself as he would get comfy. It would be a peculiar sight as he would be sketching like crazy and reading through various notes. Any passerby would be curious as to what he is doing in such an area.

So many things to do today! Despite feeling tired, that was not going to be enough to keep Kumoko down! She was determined to do whatever she could to prepare for the festival. And not just physically. She had several ideas in mind for new gadgets to try and build for the future. She was proud of coming up with the idea to use a slingshot for the tournament. It was a simple tool, but played to her strengths. Keeping her distance from her opponent. Hitting accurately from afar. Fighting without having to make physical contact. She would have to practice a bit with her new slingshot later.
But right now, it was time to draw! And no, it was not just meaningless doodles. Kumoko wanted to come up with more ideas for gear to make. The slingshot was genius, but surely she could think up more ideas? After all, she wanted to create things, not just for herself, but for all her fellow heroes-in-training. She was certainly not selfish enough to think up ideas that would only benefit her. No, she wanted ideas that could work out for anyone and everyone!
That was when Kumoko got a brilliant idea. As she drew, she could observe other students, especially the foreign ones that were visiting the school. She could watch them train. Or for the fellow mutants like her, see just how their mutations worked. Then from there, come up with ideas for gadgets and other gear that would help them out and suit their specific needs. It was brilliant!
But now Kumoko needed to find a place to sit down and begin work on her sketches. And as she looked for an ideal area to sit down in and get to work (preferably under a tree or something), she noticed her fellow support student. Smiling, she walked over to him, being careful not to trip for what felt like the thousandth time today. And also not being a bother to the guy, of course.
"Hey ya, Jin." Kumoko noticed that he was busy with something, so she spoke quietly, not wanting to ruin his concentration. "Do you mind if I join you?"

Jin would notice someone coming up to him and he could feel their stare. He would glance up for a moment to see one of his classmates, Kumoko Juro. Her quirk intrigued him from the moment he saw her in class. Much of it remains a mystery to him as he rarely met quirkers who were arachnid in nature. But she was a presence that was not detected as she seems to be here for the same reason he is or something similar. He did not need to adjust his headphones as he heard her question loud and clear as he would go back to sketching a moose quirker and would start to design a few gadgets.
“I do not mind.... have a seat and just start sketching away...there's plenty of subjects to look at”, he would reply in a relaxed tone before he would get back to designing more suits.
After suits, he would go to eyegear, then to weapons, then to braces and then to glasses and the like as his hands were a blur as he would scribble and detail various designs in a matter of minutes before resting his hand for a few seconds before going back into the storm. He has so many ideas and so little time, so he is prioritizing the smaller ones in the crowd before he would do the bigger targets due to how impressionable they are.
“How goes the festival prep? ”, he would ask mid sketch. As he wasn't interested in participating in the tournament, he was curious to see the support students in a fight as their class was more utility than battle oriented. Nevertheless, its going to be good for note taking for sure in both for seeing quirks in action and making gadgets around their weaknesses.

The spider-headed girl was happy with the fact that she was not immediately turned away. Kumoko was unfortunately far too used to that happening. Not that she ever blamed anyone when it happened. But still, Kumoko was shy enough to the point that she did not really interact much with her classmates unless it was a class exercise of some kind, or they approached her. A shame, as Kumoko really wanted to get along with and maybe even befriend as many of her fellow students as she could.
Kumoko smiled and nodded upon hearing Jin. She sat down and took out her pencil and sketch pad. Hmm, what to sketch first? There were many ideas flowing inside her head at the moment, but which to capitalize on first? Well seeing as Kumoko was a good seamstress, she figured that she could design a hero suit first. Maybe try to go for a sleek, practical, and stylish design.
That reminds me, I should finish up the modifications on my own suit. Gotta do that when I head back to my room.
As she began to sketch a basic hero suit design, Kumoko heard Jin's question. "Not too bad. I'm already done with the main thing I'll be using in the tournament. A slingshot! Just need to test it out later to make sure there's no issues with it." That would be terrible if the slingshot malfunctioned during the tournament. As if the poor girl was not already nervous enough about the whole thing without worrying about embarrassing herself in front of a whole crowd.
Speaking of the tournament, Kumoko was surprised that she had even decided to enter the thing at all. The only other class 1-S student entering the tourney was Kouta, and at least his quirk was fitting for combat if she remembered it correctly. She wondered what the rest of the class thought about her decision to enter. Well if anyone is going to go far in the tournament and make class 1-S proud, it's definitely not going to be me.
Kumoko wondered if Jin was going to sign up for anything in the festival if not the tourney. "So um, are you planning on joining in on any of the activities? Or are you going to sit this one out?" In hindsight, Kumoko would have probably decided not to join anything if she knew that she would be this nervous. But now that she had committed to this, there was no turning back. She wanted to not let her friends down. Even if she did not get very far, Kumoko wanted to at least show off some of the things she made. To show everyone that she did not just spend the whole school year doing nothing.

Jin was not the type to turn away someone for their looks as he has worked with many types of quirkers in his hometown. So seeing a spider mutation can freak much of his family but him. Though he was more a gear head in his way of thinking and as a result, his designs are more schematics that look like they were straight out of the design book. Various gadgets centered around different quirks and all designed meticulously with a sense of care put into each detail. Notes decorating each page in various colors that point out issues and corrections that need to be made. It was a marvel to behold to see his hands move as he designed.
‘Need to see if any of these designs can be improved on….requires more work when I get back into the workshop’
He’d listen to her response as he sketched around, his curiosity started when he heard that she needed to do some testing. “Do you need any help with that? I'm always curious to see how my peers work on their gear and their approaches...helps keep the brain busy”, he’d offer as he took a chance to look and see what she was working on. His endless curiosity always lands him in trouble as he took a closer look at the design and forgot about the concept of personal space. Eyes were scanning the page for every detail and what he can learn from it. Since he doesn't know how textiles or sewing, it's always an opportunity to see how more cloth based designs are made.
“These notes...are these modifications to a hero suit? How doe these mechanisms function and-”
It took a bit before the question Kumko registered as he took a step back to think about his response. The festival could be a cool way to showcase his gear but that also requires a large amount of energy to burn, which he doesn't have. He lacks proper training and only knows the bare minimum of self defense as he spent most of his time developing weapons and gear rather than fighting with them. “I recently joined and as much as I want to, my skills aren't exactly made for the field. If I get any training..but for now I’m setting this one out. Maybe next year when I can feel more confident about my gadgets”, he replied as he noted it down in a pocket notebook he kept on himself. Learning how to fight is going to be beneficial for sure as he needs to test his weapons eventually once the times call for it. Can’t rely on people forever as he did before.
“Hmm..now that I think about it...do you have any recommendations on how to make more durable gear? Your suit intrigues me and I've been curious as to how to design a hero suit from scratch...”

Kumoko smiled. "Sure! I don't mind. I could use all the help I can get." When building pretty much anything, it was good to get a second, third, maybe fourth, and even a fifth opinion on something. While Kumoko took pride in the things she made herself, she was always open to constructive criticism. Plus, working by herself meant that she would have a bit of a bias. It was better to broaden one's perspective by having others come look and offer advice, concerns, or comments. Sure, the girl had six eyes, but the more the merrier!
She listened as Jin explained why he was choosing to sit out on this year's festival activities. It made sense. He was still relatively new, so his skills, while certainly not lacking, would not feel enough for him. "That's understandable. If you do decide to jump in next year, I'm sure you'll be great!" In the meantime, Kumoko began wondering if she should have followed the same route as Jin and sit out of this. On one hand, she wanted to prove that she had grown much since enrolling here, plus she did not want to let down those who had faith in her. On the other hand, however, she was nowhere near as experienced at combat as the others in her year. So the tournament would very likely be very short for her.
Can I win even one battle? Will my gear be enough to get me through the match? Or am I biting off way more than I can chew with this? I suppose it really doesn't matter. There's no turning back, so I just need to hope for the best.
Kumoko was snapped out of her thoughts by Jin. She listened to his question and began to think. "Hmm, I mean for most of my suits, I just use my own silk. It's both light and durable, and a lot cheaper to make than other materials." But of course, there was no way that was a satisfactory answer by itself. "Perhaps using small bits of metals or hard plastics as the material would help? It's hardly practical for the purpose of durability, but being lightweight means that the user wouldn't be slowed down too much by it. Though if weight isn't an issue, or if durability for the gear is too vital, then heavier materials could be used."
Kumoko then smiled. "I'd be happy to give some pointers on making hero suits. It's honestly one of the few things I'm good at." She was not afraid to admit it. But as long as she was able to be helpful and useful, it was fine.

Jin began to furiously write down the tips that Kumoko said quickly as he made sure to add his own notes in between each one. Her quirk avoids the issue of fabric which possibly makes it easier for her in the long run when making suits.” How durable is your thread?… I have worked with a few fabrics while prototyping and always run into the issue of the fabric not being strong enough...I may want a few samples for the sake of testing if you don't mind..” It could be possible to ask her for help when it comes to fabric and sewing since his area of work was more geared towards mechanics and gadgets rather than everyday things people wear comfortably. His hearing aids and other devices have the issue of being more function than comfort, one of these days when he goes back home he may want to improve on the designs he made for the people he helped. But that's a plan for a different time. “I...I haven't had the idea to use small plastics since I always worked with metal...but that can solve one of the issues of prototyping due to me not realizing I can use other materials other than metal and junk.”, he’d reply as he put his hand on his chin and the gears started to grind in his head as he thought on how to use plastics.”...that's also true...but I feel like there are more lightweight materials that can be used to accomplish the same end but….saving budget for the first stage can be a good thing for me…”, he said as he took out his pocket notebook and started to write various things in the pages with a sketch or two before pocketing it again.
The acceptance of aid did lighten up his expression as he gave a relieved smile as he turned to look at her. “I am thankful for your guidance, Kumoko. But I simply don't ask for your help for free so in exchange I can exchange some of my designs and notes on gadgets. Its the least I can do as I have a good number of spares laying around that can be of use for you in the fights ahead of you.” he’d reply as he took out another pocket book that was labeled ‘Working Prototypes’. Taking the opportunity to sit next to her and offer her the notebook.

Kumoko saw just how intensely Jin was taking notes. She was curious, but felt it was rude to try and peek. "Well, my strings' durability depends on several things, mostly on whether or not I apply my special silk on the strings. At their worst, they're slightly tougher than regular cloth, but with my silk, it's about the level of stone or concrete. Something like that." Kumoko wondered if there was a way to make her silk even tougher. Maybe her strings could be hard as iron if she were on a more iron-rich diet? It was interesting thing to think about. Maybe one day the spider-headed girl would get a definitive answer on that.
"Oh, samples? Sure thing. Just let me know when you want them." If he asked for them right now, then Kumoko would take out a plastic container from her bag, hold that container close to the spinneret on the back of her head (her arm could barely reach that far back), produce some silk that would then fall inside the container, then quickly cover it with a lid before handing it to Jin. The reason Kumoko would produce the silk from the difficult to reach spinneret rather than from the much easier to reach mouth was because she did not want him to worry about the silk that came out of her mouth being unsanitary or anything like that. Well the silk would be clean either way, but still. Better safe than sorry.
"Oh, but quick note: My super tough silk dissolves very quickly in water, so keep that in mind. Well, it also dissolves over time as well, but for the purpose of clothing, I weave my silk with extra materials if I need to preserve the silk's toughness. Just don't keep it out in the air for too long, and avoid water unless you want the strings to be soft." Kumoko hoped that she was not being too talkative and annoying, but it was best to give a thorough explanation on the limitations of her silk.
Kumoko smiled, happy that she was being useful. It was good to be able to help others. It made the girl feel better about herself. "Always happy to help!" But then she heard Jin's next words. "Oh, I mean I don't mind giving you the help for free. But if you insist, I won't stop you. Thanks!" She smiled as she carefully took the pocket book and took a read. She did not mind Jin sitting next to her, as she was usually used to having people sit as far away from her as possible. It was a nice change of pace.
"Ooh, there's so many awesome things here!" As Kumoko skimmed the book, her eyes widened from all the ideas that suddenly sprung to mind. Where to even begin? Kumoko had no idea, but she would figure it out eventually. In the meantime, she had an earlier idea that she wanted to run by Jin to see his insight. "Hey, I had an earlier idea. It involved making a portable net but infused with elemental properties. Like a fire net that would burn whatever is captured without the net itself burning, or an electric net that would stun as it captured. The net part is easy, as I know how to do that already. But it's adding in an element that's got me stumped. How would you tackle that problem?"
She was inspired by seeing Mizuki's quirk in action, and Kumoko wanted to try and see if it was possible to replicate that kind of effect in one simple support gear. She did not know whether such a thing would be easy to make or not (assuming it was even possible), but she looked forward to seeing how Jin would answer that.

So her webbing dissolves in water? That is both interesting and a massive issue but….maybe if one can make an adhesive that can take away that issue then her threads can become quite useful for many an outfit. Wait, that is also breaking a few laws and feels like exploiting her quirk for gain. Back to the drawing board on that as he scribbled all of these thoughts in the pocketbook in various marks of green and black ink. He’d take the time to design a few gadgets based around Kumoko as he listened to her speak. It was something he found calming since he never done this sort of thing before. Talking tech was always something he enjoyed but he never found someone else to talk to about it.
“I do my best...but I need to build em to see how they work…” he’d reply to the compliment as he sketched more designs. Each one getting more and more defined as he drew each one. But his attention was drawn to her as he heard her question and little issue. Taking a moment to calmly stop his work and looking at Kumoko with his usual look, he thought up his reply carefully and meticulously.
“Well it seems like the most direct solution is creating a system in which it coats the net in a substance that can allow both elements to coat the net properly. Possibly use a system in which you can switch between settings via a button. Perhaps a gel that can be flammable and conducts electricity but not too flammable to interfere with the systems. The issue comes with application of set ideas as loading a net is quite complicated as well as maintaining the weapon properly and making sure it's durable Depending on what else you want to add on it can become a challenge to become more modular as one needs to balance effectiveness, utility, and cost as something like this would be quite expensive to protype and difficult to pitch due to the market being filled with similar products... But the ones in the market are a bit outdated so something like this can work with enough elbow grease and time...would that suffice? I can explain more in detail if you wish..”, Jin asked as he noted down various details of the device Kumoko was talking about.
Of course he couldn't help it and thus the end less exchange between the two about how to design went on as they got into the nitty gritty about how to make it all work to applying other gadgets to other various designs. It was something Jin enjoyed a lot as time seemed to fly by as he continued to speak with her. Bits and details about applying his other pieces of work began to spring up as he spoke like it was nothing as he was fully ready to offer her help. She may be the first person Jin considers her a true friend to that degree as he can relax around her and talk to her like normal.
