DOING THE NEEDFUL THE BEST WAY TO LEARN A NEIGHBORHOOD was to walk it-- so, after finishing some of the construction work and clean-up around her cafe, and moving some boxes into the upstairs unit, Teruko Serizawa set-out on the streets of Mustafu.
As it was winter, the spines on her back had been painstakingly chiseled away and then cauterized, so that she could fit her massive winters coat over her body. She wore a simple pair of jeans and an open-backed sweater underneath that, and set out trundling in the snow.
"Have a good evening, Serizawa-san!" one of the neighboring shopkeepers called.
Teruko waved back, "Walk safely!"
Though her arrival had been the subject of heated discussion on the neighborhood watch website, as soon as Teruko had gotten further into the public eye, the frenzied talk quieted into nothing. She became the "lovely reptilian new neighbor", rather than "that monster from from Tokyo". Funny how, in almost fifty years, humans changed so little.
Teruko strode down the sidewalk, her tail swaying this way and that behind her. The kaiju couldn't very well stay cooped-up inside-- but goddamn, it was freezing outside. Teruko drew the hood of her coat, then wedged her meaty hands into the lined pockets, clasping the hand-warmers within. What an awful night to go out. Above all, though, Teruko was stubborn.
A noise snagged her attention. The crocodilian lifted her nose towards the sound, and then followed it. There was a flick of motion in the dark-- what on earth...?

The animal could not find a good place to sleep even if its life depended on it... well actually its life did depend on it. But it didnt wanna stay with that green woman. The two still havent warmed up to one another. Pun not indended. But brr was it chilly and whats worse that animals dont wear clothes. And the only fur it had was on its mane. In one of the alleys it jumped on a trash can lid, but it was chilly too. Not the mention slippery which caused the critter to slip off and knock out the trash can as well. It was a big oof moment. Luckily nothing fell on the animal.
But the sound did not go unnoticed as soon, someone was to approach the clumsy animal. But that someone wasnt human, or at least not appearance wise. Looking at the new arrival, they looked lizard like, but not. Something was off and the centipede didnt know should it be alamed or not. This blasted world of quirks confused the animal to no ends. Just as it felt it was getting used to everything. Nature threw another curve at its way. It backed away from the person, just in case it was danger

DOING THE NEEDFUL THE CROCODILIAN WATCH the unusual creature with tentative interest. At first, she thought it was a cat—or perhaps a tanuki—but the way that it scuttled was distinctly un-mammalian. She rummaged into her pocket, withdrawing a rather blocky smartphone. The kaiju powered it on, pulled down the drop-down menu, and selected the flashlight.
It seemed insectoid, but it boasted a main, and it was huge. Probably a mutant quirker of some sort.
“Ah, apologies!” Teruko said quickly, turning-off the flashlight. She didn’t know if it was sentient, but regardless—be it a quirked animal, or a quirked human, it wasn’t kind to flash your flashlight at an unsuspecting passerby.
“Are you okay?” Teruko inquired, sinking onto her haunches. Squatting on the sidewalk in an attempt to get closer to the creature she was addressing did nothing to remedy their size differences. But the crocodilian thought it was better than nothing, “Heh, sorry for startling you. I’m Serizawa Teruko, I’m opening a bakery up the street? Nice to meet you!”
Since she wasn’t sure if this creature was sentient or not, the woman opted on the side of caution, addressing it as one might address a human. She awaited a response, if there was any, then asked another question of the creature before her.
“Are you quite warm enough with your little mane?” she inquired, “You don’t seem to be built for snow, little one. AHAHA Not that I’m one to talk, being a giant lizard and all."

A light shined on the animal. And the confused creature saw a animal doing human things. Like talking, the insect didnt know was this danger or not. It spoke of an apology and turned off the flashlight. The lizard person asked if the animal was ok. The animal didnt reply, it knew people dont understand it. But lizard person continued to speak as it introduced itself as Teruko Serizawa. The critter just yawned and scratched itself. And then looked at the lizard person and nodded
Then Teruko as the person is called asking if the critter was warm. The animal shook its head, because of course it wasnt warm. It decided to hop off the snow. It hopped on her tail. The lizard Teruko's tail was much better then the snow. The animal decided to crawl up on the Teruko's back and rest on her head, because that was much more stable and better for sleep and nap. Maybe then Teruko would realize that she was indeed interacting with an animal and not a fellow quirked human.
While the centipede did have some sort of intelligence, it was still well below the level of a human. But luckily for Teruko, it had ambition to learn

DOING THE NEEDFUL WHAT AN UNUSUAL LITTLE THING! As Teruko spoke, she started to feel more and more foolish. The creature was intelligent, no doubt-- or at the very least, petrified by the sight of a much larger creature. The woman wondered if, perhaps, it was some sort of deformed dog or cat? Animals in general didn’t seem very fond of her at all… but just when Teruko was about to write the critter off as “some weird dog”, it nodded in response to her question.
She went quiet. Maybe it was a fluke?
But when Teruko asked if it was warm, and the critter shook its head, Teruko knew that it hadn’t been a fluke. It understood her.
The idea on its own wasn’t entirely far-fetched-- she’d seen the news bit on that super-intelligent opossum applying for personhood, and thereby citizenship. So who could say that there wouldn’t be some weird, deformed dog-bug-thing, too?
Teruko had wrapped her tail around her legs as she spoke to the creature, and the creature saw the opportunity to hop onto her tail and skitter up her spines. When it settled, it settled atop her head. Through her thick, scaly skin, Teruko could barely feel the weight of the deformed dog-bug-thing getting settled there.
“You feel tall up there, buddy?” she asked, humored. She chuckled to herself, and began to walk again, doing her best to keep her head as still as possible.

Now on the head, it was much more comfier to rest and nap. The lizard person asked if it feels tall. Good question. It looked before it and yeah sure enough it felt big "Yah!" the animal said, thus for the first time, the reptillian woman would hear how the animal sounds like
Soon, the animal noticed that they started to walk. It wondered where they were going. The animal yawned and started to blink and stay awake to see where they were going. It was interesting for sure. But it was sleepy, not only was it sleepy but it needed to balance. Because if it fell asleep it had a large chance of just falling off the lizard persons head. As they walked or rather as the lizard woman walked, the animal looked around. Everything was different from here. Everything looked so different. It wondered if it could become this big? Hmm. It wondered and pondered. A thought that went anywhere as it couldnt think of an answer, but at least it kept the critter from falling asleep.
For a lizard, this lady seemed nice. Then another yawned escaped the bugs mouth. The walk they had was strange but also relaxing

DOING THE NEEDFUL THE WOMAN CHUCKLED AT THE CREATURE'S enthusiastic response, which seemed to be a short proclamation of "yah!". Teruko had, at this point, chalked its intelligence up to a very smart bird. Capable of speech and solving puzzles, perhaps, but not a person.
"Good," she hummed. The walk was slow-going, the streets were decently quiet. The weight of the creature upon her head was little more than a warm, heavy pressure. It stayed relatively still, though a periodic yawn could be heard from it. Maybe she should carry it instead? Was it someone's pet? Would it be receptive to getting carried?
Before Teruko had the wherewithal to coax it into her hands, a noise pricked at her ears-- shattering glass, and some shuffling, just around the corner.
"Hrm..." she grunted, deciding to follow the sound. As she rounded the corner, she spied him-- his back was to her. A man with the hood of his sweater drawn up over his head, unlocking the driver's side door through an open window. Around his feet, the powdered remains of the window he'd busted. Teruko snorted, twin rivulets of smoke starting to wisp from her nostrils.
"Ex-cuse me!" the woman boomed, storming into the street, "The FUCK do you think YOU'RE doing, buddy?"
Her thick, durable scales (and rather daunting appearance) gave the woman a sort of foolhardiness. For example, there was no telling if the man was armed-- but if he was, Teruko was certain that her scales could take it.
The man screamed, clearly startled, and turned to face the unusual interloper. Teruko smirked at him, the smoke drifting through the gaps between her sharklike teeth. In the man's hands, a few college textbooks and a cell phone. An absentminded student, perhaps?
"You better have a great goddamn reason for being in that car," Teruko hissed low, her lip twitching into a sneer.

The animal enjoyed being on top. This height was amazing. But as they were walking their own way, they heard some shattering glass and other sound. "Hrm" it heard the lizard woman grunt and saw she followed the sound. As they rounded the corner, they saw a human with their back turned to the duo. It had what the humans call, sweater hoodie. Their feautures were obscured. The lizard woman Teruko snorted, apparently noticing something the animal failed to see.
She then spoke, starting off ''gently'' and then BOOMING and calling out the bad person. As soon as she raised her voice, the animal growled at the petty thief.
The human screamed seeing the two of them. Like, none of them was human looking compared to him. A dinosaur and a bug. Things that usually frighten simple humans.
As the lizard lady Teruko gave the man a chance to explain himself, the animal just snarled and growled. It was ready to attack if need be. But it was now very mindful of using its quirk as it did not want to harm Teruko by accident. But as soon as the human showed signs of hostility, the animal would strike with its acid

DOING THE NEEDFUL TERUKO'S TINY ACCOMPLICE SNARLED and growled from atop Teruko’s broad forehead, clearly trying to intimidate the thief that they’d caught redhanded. It was kind-of cute, really. What a clever creature. The man seemed to go weak in the knees, cowering against the door, his eyes blown wide and watery from a lack of blinking. His lip trembled as if he were about to speak, but instead he just sniveled.
“Hey, buddy!” Teruko called, waving a taloned hand in his face, “I’m talking to you!”
“P-p-please don’t hurt me,” the guy sputtered, flinching away from the thick hand, “I j-just need some m-moneyyy.”
The woman tilted her chin up at him, squinting down at the man.
“What do you need money for, huh? What’s important enough that you gotta steal from your fellow man, huh?”
The man started to blubber, holding his hands to his face, fat tears rolling down his cheeks. Teruko’s shoulders had been squared intimidatingly until this point, but they slackened. The fact that he was crying, rather than attacking her, meant that he was probably desperate. But why he was desperate would really help Teruko determine what to do with the man.
“Oi, dude—stop your blubbering,” she repeated, her tone dropping to something less growl-y and hostile, and more levelheaded, “Why are you breaking-in to cars? If you’ve got a good reason, you gotta let me hear it. Else I’m gonna knock you out and leave you for the cops to find…”

They approached the villain and Teruko spoke to him. But then the cowardly man started to cry, which confused the animal. Usually screaming and hits and attacks come. Not cowardice and tears. Was Teruko special in some way? Hmm, surely the height made her seem fearsome compared to the small big. Oh she was so lucky. Many people probably respect her for it
One day the critter will garner the same respect that Teruko does. But that is for another time. Now, the animal needed to focus as Teruko and the thief were talking. But the animal did not understand anymore what was going on. But it seems all if well as long as the man isnt attacking, Teruko doesnt seem to relax and was less hostile, growly, so that means the animal should do the same and remain alert.
So even if the animal didnt understand what was going on anymore, it would be able to follow somewhat by judging and mimicking Teruko's reactions, so if Teruko got to be mad, the animal would do so as well. But now the animal wondered what happens next? Do they like capture this crying villain or not. Do they yell at him?

DOING THE NEEDFUL THE MAN HICCUPED PITIFULLY at the questions, getting all disgusting and snotty. A low growl rose in Teruko’s throat. This was pathetic.
“I’m gonna count to five,” the woman insisted, “If you don’t start talking, I’m laying you out and calling the cops.”
The man squinted at her through the tears and snot, on the verge of a lucid moment. It was clear that he didn’t believe her.
“One…”
Teruko held a taloned finger aloft.
“Two…”
A second finger.
“Okay, okay okay,” the man said urgently, raising his hands, “I’ll talk, I’ll talk I’ll talk.”
The crocodilian kaiju lowered her hand.
“I just got laid-off from work,” the man explained, “And money is tight. I don’t even have enough for rent next month. If I don’t come-up with money, fast, I’m going to be out on the streets.
Teruko rubbed her chin with her plump, taloned hand.
“How much ya need?” she asked.
“A-hndred-and-ten-thousand yen,” the man mumbled.
That was pretty steep. The kaiju harrumphed, peering skyward.
“What are your skills?”
The man’s shoulders trembled.
“Oi, don’t start crying on me again! What are you good for?!”
“I work maintenance.”
The kaiju-woman smiled.
“Hear me out—“ she said eagerly, “I’m starting a bakery in downtown Mustafu, across the street from the Gym—and I could use another pair of hands. Put in a full eight hours, every day from now until the fifth, and I’ll pay you fifteen dollars an hour under the table for each honest day’s work. That should leave you with 1200$ and give you more time to get this sorted. And you won’t have to break-in to cars.”
“You mean it?”
“Yeah.”
The pair exchanged details, and the man set-off. Teruko watched him leave before walking in the opposite direction.
“Well… that was exciting, wasn’t it?” she asked the creature atop her head, “Thought for sure I was gonna get to kick some ass. That’s too bad…”

The animal observed actions made by the sapient creatues. So far it seems the guy was bad and Teruko was giving him a chance of redemption. So if that was the case, the animal would go along with it. With a simple count down she made him agree to work with her and work FOR her. Meanwhile the animal blinked in astonishment in how she did that.
Once the ordeal was done, Teruko remarked how exciting this event was. The animal nodded in agreement. But now that their little adventure was done, what next would they do. Well chances are they go their seperate ways. But how do they go about it. Should the animal now jump and go away.
Well it was an option, but it didnt wanna do that. So the critter watched Teruko to see what she would do in this situation. Frankly the animal didnt wanna go anywhere. This place was cozy now. Teruko was cozy. So would it be possible to stay? At least until the weather conditions get better. That way the animal can scurry away elsewhere. This sounded like a good plan. Now what wuld Teruko want to do? That was the question
