Winter in Japan can bite sometimes, and by that Piles of snow, freezing rain and wind that just felt as if it blew right through you. Thistle Smith is a first-year support student at U.A. and its east to see what her quirk is a mile away. Standing at a high top table designed for more massive mutation quirks, she faces the window watching it snow; the centaur found it comforting to see the snow. It reminded her of home after all. Her tray is filled with larger than standard servings sized meals, one plate of vegetarian omurice, one bowl of miso soup, onigiri with varying toppings such as pickled plum, and toasted nori. Most of her diet consisted of vegetarian dishes; she occasionally had fish or chicken. Beside her plate sat open blue folder filled with signed forms and care manuals for her new gear and how they worked. It wasent complicated, but it warranted a thorough reading. Throughout the year, she had several redesigns and improvements on her gear; all meant to protect herself and others. Lately, she asked for adjustments to her saddlebags, allowing for hand and hoot hold loops for the occasional rider. Reaching under her swept bangs, Thistle rubbed one of her eyes and yawned before plopping another chunk of the delicious tender eggy omurice into her mouth. Chewing, she let out a low internal squeak while folding her fuzzy ears to the side, savoring the sweet tomatoey taste that filled her mouth. It was a known secret among her older brothers that omelets were her favorite food, but omurice was her weakness and would never pass up the chance to eat it. Shifting her heavy rubber shoed hooves, she pushed her papers away from her plate and switched from chopsticks to a spoon and chowed down relishing every bite, wagging and swishing her short cut black tail with happiness as she did so. "MMhhn!! This is so good! It's almost better than dads- though I could never tell him that.."

The weather as of late was actually becoming a pain. But it was nothing Jin wasn't accustomed to as his hometown would have it worse during this time of year and a fair number of people would get hurt by the virtue that its snow. Jin Nakamura, a first year support student who was unfortunately born with his naturally green hair and red eyes made him stand out like a sore thumb. Adding on the headphones and odd way he dresses, he is an eye catcher to say the least.
Why is he here in the first place? Well he was holed up in his workshop/room for the past few days, finishing up some gadgets that he could use personally. But at about 11 at night, which was his normal work hours, and he would knock out and wake up in the morning. Which was odd to him because he was at his normal pace only to realize that he hasn't eaten in about two days. He contemplated eating his rations, but with nothing else better to do he would leave the dorms and head to the cafeteria. Taking the time to enjoy the snow coated scenery as it reminded him of home or at least a little.
He would saunter into the cafeteria and get his food. The tray consisted of udon, a bowl of rice, some grilled fish, some milk, and some melon bread. Standard food and it helps the brain grow so he would accept it wholeheartedly. Though the issue with people these days is that eating stuff immediately upon getting it and not sitting down to enjoy it is considering weird. So he walked around to find somewhere to sit. It took in a matter of about a few seconds to see a preculair sight. A centaur was eating at one of the tables...a centaur. It was normal to see one or twice these days but this was actually a first. Was this person new to the school? How did she differ from the others? Does she require any sort of gadgets to help her? Eating habits? This was all new to him and he would quickly make his way to introduce himself. Curiosity has him piqued and now he wants to see who this person was about.Bad habit of his but he means well once you get past it.
But then he would notice that the centaur is a she, so he would quickly adjust his attitude and would sit across from her. Noticing she was well into eating more than the average person but that can be chummed up to her size. But saying that out loud would be rude as some would call it and he would calming start eating as soon as he sat. Because curiosity or not, he was pretty hungry. After a few minutes of him properly eating his meal, he would adjust his sound input of his headphones and then begin to speak. But he heard her speaking to herself so he hesitated for a moment.
“Are you a new transfer?” he would open up with in a rather calm tone. Since he couldn't actually think of proper words to introduce himself and just went with the first thing in his mind.

The sound of clanking dishes and the low murmur of students followed by the subtle rattle of the windows as the winter winds blew about outside filled the air; it was no bother to Thistle in all honesty. She was quite accustomed to the noise level and knew to turn out most of the background noise. It wasn't unusual to have company, swiveling her ears around; she could hear the approach of the young male. Standing at the high top table, she paused in eating then stared down at the green-haired student as he settled down on a stool in front of her with his back to the window.
Swallowing her mouth full of omelet, tilting her ears forward inquisitively; she wondered to herself if the headphones had anything to do with his quirk, or were they just an accessory? Cleaning the tomato sauce from her face, she sat in silence the expressions on his face suggested he was mauling over what to say, so she just waited.
He inquired if she was a transfer, letting out a slight snort she reached up and scratched the back of her head.
"No, not really. I've been enrolled for quite some time, but I'm usually so involved with studies and classes. I typically make my lunches, but its been so cold lately going to the grocery store to get what I need to cook had become a little troublesome. I saved a good sum of food money, so buying the lunches here is just pure convenience."
Pulling her hand back away from her ruffled bob, she rests her hands back on the table where she taps her fingertip in time with the beat of someone's music playing a tad loud. Having equine sal-dish ears allowed her to hear several decibels lower and higher than the average human was able to. Its usually played to her advantage, and sometimes led her to listen to things she wished she hadn't. Returning the inquiry, she asked.
" What about you- Oh, I'm Thistle Smith, by the way, sorry for not saying it in the beginning."

The young woman would soon reply to his question in a rather concise manner. He would continue to eat his food in a rather calm manner as he would figure out another response. His motor functions are still a bit delayed as he was still trying to wake up from his rather messed up sleep schedule. So she has been around for quite a while, he hasn't just noticed due to many reasons he can answer for himself.
“Ah…”
He would carefully watch her movements as he would listen to the crowd around them. His brain is working a mile a minute as he would try and find the right response and note down any features about the person in front of him and who they. Equine quirk, sensitive ears, massive diet, and so on. Nodding to her previous statement before coming head to head with the same question reflected back at him. He would take another taste of his food before he would answer.
“Its...fine...Jin Nakamura...support studies student...sorry about..sudden question..was curious since I saw your quirk from far away...just wondering how it works and stuff to make up for it...personal habit of mine…”
He would answer in a rather flat tone as he would starting eat his grilled fish and rice. Quickly taking out a notebook and set it next to his tray, quickly sketching out another design for various gadgets that would limit the feedback of sound for quirkers with sensitive ears. It seems a bit rude to be doing this suddenly but the gears in his head were turning as he was trying to figure out a design for those who don't have proper ear structure.
“If I were to go with this design, will this benefit the client if they had this sort of mutation...how comfortable would this be for the person in question...I don't want to sacrifice comfort and use...how adjustable would this be if i try this approach…”
He would mutter in between bites of his food and listening for a response from Thistle. Doing this out of habit, he would not know if the person in front of him could hear him or not.

Thistle slowly tilted her head while listening to him, so they were in the same boat- but different reasons. Sure she could rock hero studies, but she preferred being support and using her strength to help the injured, rather than just cause more damage. Not to say heroes were aiming to hurt but her quirk, in particular, had the capacity to kill and dole out serious collateral damage. It wasn't something she rightly liked to think about. Letting out an audible laugh she shook her head and looks back at her rear before patting the side of her withers. He wasn't wrong, anyone could see her from a mile away.
"No, it's okay-."
Putting down her spoon she sighs and shifted her legs, the sound of the guards on her hooves squeaking with the movement. It was a little difficult to put in words what he was asking but she stood in silence flicking her ears outward to the side as she thought.
"In short I'm a centaur, from my lower pelvis down is the body of a heavy breed Draft horse. So I'm much larger than what would ordinarily be seen when it comes to quirks similar to mine. My mother is much smaller and appears to be the size and build of a thoroughbred and my papa is a larger breed like my self. Both my older brothers are large like papa and me."
Taking in a short breath she turns her head and looks to the side seeming a bit uncomfortable, swishing her short black tail side to side she stood perfectly still while a small group of students walks around her rump to head to a table a little further down.
"My quirk in simple terms gives me an advantage for running and pulling heavy loads, I'm not to bad at push either- but the bulk of my strength lies in my ability to move heavy loads that would usually be relegated to machines or those with quirks specific to physical strength."
Reaching up she cupped her hands behind her tall equine ears, "I have pretty good hearing, I can hear decebals that are either too high or too low for normal human ears. Ah- I can see really well in low light and the dark too. This makes it easy for me to walk at night and not be so panicky hahah......"
looking back down at her tray she reaches down sturs around her miso soup, "What about-"
Pausing she blinked and twitched tilting them forward her hearing his voice lower, was..he muttering?
"I'm sorry? what? Design what? I'm confused?"

The icy winds gnawed him down to his very core. All he wanted to do was sleep, escape the chill, eat something. Part of him, to think of the unthinkable, wanted to skip a few classes just so he could avoid that sting against his skin. Every other snail in the world was hibernating tight in their shells somewhere underground. It was a shame that the most important part of the school year was coming oh, so soon. He wiped away a few frozen bits of mucous as he stood in line, his shivers persisted the whole time. Big spaces like this were never easy to heat. All that warm goodness just went to the ceiling and left everything below it a luke-cold mix of misery, he reasoned.
Nenkin could never tell if the food was really that great, or at least not anymore. Maybe it was better to say that the cafeteria food was boring. After months spent eating through their regular rotation he just wished he could eat something else. His tastes longed for his grandmother's cooking so much that he thought that he could smell all those spices that she liked to use in her dishes.
He lumbered out of the line with heavy steps. He looked around, spying a few of his friends in the distance already enjoying their lunch. He twitched his mouth a few times. No. Every day a new table, he had decided. He was never one for socializing in middle school, but going to UA offered him the unique opportunity to start afresh.
His eye stalks swiveled about without his head. There were a few that were sitting by themselves, though there was a table that had caught his eye in particular. He had seen her around campus before between classes, but had never approached, for she was always just at the edge of his sight or too far out of the way to bother. If he didn't go and meet her now he felt he would never get chance to again.
Chances were the two of them would be able to see him coming from a mile away, if not that then the feeling of his lumbering gait smacking into the tiles below. In all his time here he never once sat at one of these tables, and now that he thought about it he probably put more than a few years of stress on those poor chairs in the space of months.
Despite the heavy weight of the food on his try, he carried it easily in one hand, He had a plethora of different foods on several plate; everything that his impressive size and special dietary needs could convince the servers to give him. He was hungry enough that he couldn't even wait for the table before he took a piece of chicken in his hand and sucked it up with his proboscis. "H-uh-!" He tried to introduce himself just before he had managed to swallow his food. He put his free hand against his chest as the rogue poultry casually made its way down. "Hey." He looked to Thistle first, and then to Jin. The guy seemed somewhat familiar, but it was more passing.
"You guys don't mind if I sit here, do you?" He wouldn't wait too long for a response, assuming that neither of them protested he would take a seat next to Jin. He would quickly start digging into his meal, his proboscis shooting out from the bottom of his head to suck in some noodles he had picked up with a handy pair of chopsticks.
He would make sure to swallow this time before he started speaking again. realizing that he had never introduced himself. "I'm Kamekuji... Nenkin. Nice to meet you."

Jin would take out a pocket notebook and would start listing down various details of Thistles quirk as she would explain it to him. Nodding in between glances up at her and then his design book, his mind would start to design small pieces of gear in the notebook. Her quirk lends well to a gear study as her lower body presents a challenge in terms of fitting and ease of use due to increased body mass. Her energy consumption would be higher as a result due to her greater capacity for speed and overall endurance. Build based off an existing horse species, seems like the larger bottom half is the dominant factor while the smaller must be recessive. Being able to pull heavier loads has some ability to place stress on her back...if her body works the same as a regular horse..perhaps some bracers would aid her if she were to let him make some. He would eat his food slowly as his brain starts working harder to figure out various gadgets to help people like her in the future. Wait..did she mention she has good hearing?
At the mention of his design, he would look up as he would set down the pen and eat another piece of his food.”Sorry...I was thinking up a new design for quirkers with mutations that affected their hearing...mostly trying to draft up a prototype that can be adjusted for ease of use...similar to my own but for more unconventional ears..like yours for example..apologies for mumbling, bad habit of mine… I tinker a lot so it's on the brain often..” he would explain as he would drink his tea. Doodling another design for a gadget in the smaller notebook as he would apologize. Making a mental note to not mumble around people without knowing about their quirk beforehand. That last detail had a delayed reaction on him as he now has to explain is weird habits to her. But it should be fine since it wasn't anything bad, perhaps she could find interest in it but that's up to her really.
But in the distance he would notice another figure coming towards them. Somewhat...unique in appearance as he would slither his way towards the place the both of them were sitting. He could see that it's another mutation but it was an appearance that was also new to him. His hometown despite having a few quirkers, it didn't have many of the outlandish mutations going around. It take a seat next to us and would start eating, nothing too extravagant but it was fascinating to watch happen in front of him. He would introduce himself as Kamekuji Nenkin.
“Nah..its cool, feel free..” he would reply normally.
Jin would start writing down his name and various observations on his mannerisms. He is snail like in appearance and seems to have all the features a snail would have and yet he is able to speak as normal. Is he a human with a snail mutation or a snail with a unique quirk.? Can't ask right now due to the lunch period and he has various designs to work on. It was fascinating to watch him eat but he also remembers that its rude to stare. He would turn his attention back to Thistle. With design book in hand he would slide it over with ease as he would eat his food.
“Here..since you heard me muttering about it...best take a peak of it to explain it better...just a bunch of roughs and ideas...it needs improvement..”, Jin would add on as he would eat his udon.

Tilting her ears back her senses picked up a familiar squish-squash sound, watching Nenkin lumber around the table and sit beside Jin the centaur just tilted her head to the side twitching her ears as she craned them forward to more intently listening to the two. She'd seen this student before but he much like her didn't really seem to be the sort for many words.
"Hm- no c'mon there's plenty of room at the high tops, most people never sit here with me- guess heights aren't really favorable?"
She joked her mouth gone dry after watching his proboscis launch out and snatch food off his chopsticks. Blinking a bit behind her bangs the centaur just quieted down and stared, it was awkward for most but she found other mutation quirks fascinating to see. It wasn't long before the medical knowledge gears in her head began to turn, she wondered how his quirk worked and how it affected his physiology.
This spoke up with a random question, her tone of voice seemingly excited.
" do you have a radula ?"
She asked sticking her tongue out and pointing to it, " Most land snail species have a tongue covered in backward teeth used to shred their food."
pausing in thought with her tongue still out she stared down at the notebook shoved her way, reaching up she cupped her hand while pushing back her bands exposing her very large black-blue equine eyes. the design looked very good but seemed to be missing something.
reaching in her saddlebag she dug around before pulling out a sketch pencil, flipping over the page she sketched out a looped design making a side note in cursive that the material should be smooth and flexible so not to apply pressure to delicate tissues and cartilaginous ears.
"Try using poseable structures so they can be adjusted without falling off, if they loop and grip the ear its less likely to cause pain or irritation."
She replied handing back the note book

Nenkin stared at thistle, confused, one of his eyestalks retreated into his head, only to pop right back out. “Radula?” His English was a bit fuzzy, if he was going to be honest. He didn’t even remember what it was like to have a tongue, funny thing. He ground the last bits of food in his mouth until it finally made his way down his throat. He tilted his head a bit. “Maybe?” Easy as it would have been he wasn’t about to stretch his mouth open in front of what were essentially a couple of strangers.
The topic of the conversation was quick to move on. Expected, but disappointing. He should have considered how much he was interrupting them before he sat down. Not much that he understood. Sounded like suit business. He didn’t understand the hype. Words that he never thought he’d hear in an actual conversation flew right through and out his head like they were speeding bullets. He furrowed the brow below his eyes. Why had that been the analogy that popped into his mind first? He chowed down on a hearty piece of beef, enjoying the tender texture and what hints of spice he could taste. Some curry would have been nice right about now.
He tapped his claws a few times to the beat of music that he was bouncing around his head, one of his eyes glanced over to what they were working on. A rough sketch of what he guessed looked like the girl sitting across from him. “Ar-” He tried to interject himself before the other boy at the table would be able to toss the conversation back to the centauress. “Sorry. Are you guys in class A?” He had talked to quite a number of people, and he was sure that he had already met every one in there, but he could never be sure. It seemed that the first class was a lot smaller than his own. "I thought that we designed our suits already though..."

“Wait...thats a good idea but then comes to the idea of material and how that plays into a factor...hugging the ear is good and all but at some point or another you’ll need to take it off...but...” he would trail off as he flips through the sketch book to find aclean page to draw on
Jin would respond to Thistles suggestion on the design and it only fueled the gears in his brain to go even faster than before. He would start scribbling like a madman as he would draw up various designs. Several designs start to evolve as a result and he could feel eagerness to get these designs made once he has finalized them.
Nenkin would soon chime in as Jin would realize that he didn't introduce himself to the new lunchmate at the table. He would snap out of his trance and would shift his attention over to the mollusk esque friend.
“Ah sorry, Jin Nakamura, class 1-SS. Just discussing how to design hearing aids for people with certain mutations”, he would explain as he would show the various designs to him. Fluttering through and quickly realizing who he was talking to. He took a moment to show Nenkin the various designs and then simply ask him but then also include Thistle as well.
“I have a question to both of you...what sort of headphone design do you find most comfortable?”, he would ask as he would start sketching different designs that would for different mutations. Equine would the the start then mollusk then go into crustaceans and so on. Though it soon became apparent that he was sketches various animals with headphones on them and it looks quite good and silly considering what it looks like out of context.

Laughing on how silly her question one, the equine rooted student shifted her heavy legs, the sound of her horseshoes clopping against the tile floor alarming some behind her. Swishing her short black haired tail side to side, she paused and touched her finger to her chin.
"Hmm? Oh, I'm from 1-SS as well; I'm a Medical and emergency response hero in training ehehe! I'm not too great at making things, but I have a good eye for improving designs in the making stage by giving material and form critiques.."
Smiling sheepishly, she flattened her ears and playfully stuck her tongue out; " My Suit often has to be refitted and adjusted, my lower-body is a lot stronger than most materials can handle, so the bindings and buckles tend to break when I run or pull things. And I go through leg gear more than I care for, but that's the cost of having four !" She said with another nervous laugh.

Nenkin looked around, not really sure how to respond to Thistle's laughter, nor what she was really laughing at. He hoped it wasn't his ignorance in the matter. Regardless, he was quickly aware of his mistake. No wonder he never met them before!
He listened to what Thistle had to say, but if he was going to be honest he didn't really understand half of what she said. "Oh," he would say, trying to sound as if he understood her completely, "that's really cool." Something told him that people had to go to college for stuff like that, but he shoved it out of his mind just as quickly. He wasn't about to make a fool of himself.
"I uhh. Wow. I have to pay a lot for clothes but I'm pretty sure that's not as bad as having to buy horse-stuff all the time."
Nenkin's eye stalks leaned in to the sketch book as the boy took another bite of his food. He never thought about it before. He remembered having ears when he was little, in fact his favorite pair of earbuds couldn't be used anymore ever since his quirk manifested. "Cans." He would quickly respond. Just because he didn't have ears anymore didn't mean he couldn't be a bit of an audiophile.
"So long as they're not in-ear I'm good." He would wait for a moment before figuring he should explain himself on that one.
"I kinda lost my ears when my quirk manifested," he would point to a place on the side of his head, right about where one might assume his ears should have been, "there's just a membrane over the hole now."
He slurped up another chopstick of noodles and munched down on another piece of meat while the two conversed a bit more before he remembered a small detail. "Well," He stopped himself, realizing that he was still chewing on a bit of beef, but he would quickly swallow, "I don't know if I could even wear hearing aids. I heal really fast and I think the doctors told my parents my body would reject implants."

Thistles response was rather stinted to say the least after Nenkin corrected her. Could it be nervousness? Anxiety? The fact that an assumption was corrected? Either way we have a new lunch mate as it looks and he looks rather interesting from what he said so far.
Jin would start noting down the various details about Nenkin as he spoke and looked at his designs. So he doesn't have ears, it was a gradual process, he has regeneration and the mutation happened overtime. None of his normal functions seem to be affected by this aside from a few added benefits but given his snail like properties one could assume that he suffers the same sort of issues a snail would have in cold weather and whatnot.
Nenkins answer was rather simple but it did serve as a direction on how to design headphones in the case that people similar to his mutation would go on. He would start to sketch like mad on designs that gripped the head and didn't rely on being in ear to be used, each sketch and design started to evolve rapidly as he was feeling the groove as he was accounting for thistles mutations as well. As he would do this he would listen to Nenkins reply and respond normally as he sketched.
“Rest assured...these aren't implants, these would be wearable headphones I was just curious and wanted to challenge myself in designing something...Thistle, do you perhaps have any specific issues about the gear you go through...maybe I can build something more durable for the sake of convenience and what not…”, he would say as he sketched more and more, drinking his tea and eating his food every five designs he would draw in red and blue pencil. Corrections, iterations, varinants, and more could be seen all over and he would flip each age to start anew.
