"There! All done!"
After several days of work, Kumoko had finally finished it. The hero suit that Angel's aunt had designed for her. Looking at the finished work, Kumoko smiled. It came out pretty well in her opinion. It took a couple of tries to get it down just right, but in the end, it was worth it.
Though sadly, Kumoko was not in one of the hero courses. This meant that it was highly unlikely if not just outright impossible for there to be a situation where she would ever get to actually wear this outfit in a realistic setting. Well, unless she decided to become a rescue hero rather than support, but the spider-headed girl was not yet sure just which path she would take.
Still, this was by no means a waste of her time. As a Support Student, she would be expected to assist those in the hero courses, which would probably include making hero outfits for them. So this was pretty much practice for when that time came. And Kumoko was more than happy to do so for anyone who wanted a really neat hero suit. She hoped to get better, improving her skills until one day, she could make top quality suits for anyone and everyone who wanted one.
Speaking of making suits for others, Kumoko had an idea. She had a certain vigilante friend who was in need of a proper outfit. A hooded jacket and baseball cap would not be sufficient enough to act as a viable hero outfit. And seeing as one of the primary reasons Kumoko had worked up the courage to join UA in the first place was because of said friend, she wanted to help him out in whatever way she could. So keeping her plan a secret, Kumoko began to spend the next several weeks designing and creating a hero suit so amazing that it would completely blow his mind.
Obviously, the girl was often busy with classes and homework. So she would have to put her plan into motion during her free time. In between classes and after finishing studying or doing homework, Kumoko would make various sketches, using what knowledge of her friend's likes and dislikes she had to design a suit that would appeal to his tastes. A suit that was both stylish and practical. Whenever she could, Kumoko would go visit the mall to buy the supplies she needed. And once she got all the necessary supplies, it was time to start sewing.
Kumoko would do everything in her room. The sewing, the measurements, everything. She did not want to be disturbed by others, or even worse, be asked who the suit was for. Kumoko wanted to avoid awkward questions, hence the relative secrecy and privacy. It helped that she was careful enough to not arouse any suspicion. And even if someone were to see what she was working on, Kumoko could just hand-wave it as practice for future projects. Technically not lying.
After several weeks, the main suit was ready! And now for the hardest part: the helmet. First, helmets were surprisingly expensive. Second, Kumoko wanted to go for a custom-built one, so that would be even more tricky. Fortunately, Kumoko knew a guy who worked with automobiles, and would no doubt have a good motorcycle helmet to use as the base. So going into the man's shop, she explained what she needed, what it was for, and who it was for (which just so happened to be the man's own son). After listening to Kumoko, the armored man agreed to help, keeping the whole thing a secret from his son, and even offered to let Kumoko pick a motorcycle helmet free of charge, though of course the spider-headed girl would decline such a generous offer and insist on paying. After getting the helmet, it was just a matter of bringing it to school, modifying it by adding some parts, and hiding it from everyone else. In the event that someone did see her with it, Kumoko would just say that it was a surprise Christmas gift for a friend. Again, technically not lying.
So after quite some time had passed, the preparations were finally complete. Everything was packed up in two boxes, all neatly wrapped up and tied like Christmas presents. Now it was time to visit a certain friend's house. Texting him that she would be right over, Kumoko asked her foster dad to drive her over to her destination: the Akadama household.
"Kumoko? Hi! You want to come in?"
Kenshin was a bit curious on why Kumoko had texted him that she would come drop some things off for him without further clarification. Meanwhile, Kumoko just smiled. "Maybe another time. I actually have to leave pretty soon. I just wanted to give you these. Consider these a late birthday present. Or maybe an early Christmas present?" Upon seeing the wrapped gifts, Kenshin raised an eyebrow. "Really? Well thanks, Kumoko."
As he took the boxes, Kumoko smiled. "Come on! Why don't you open them here? I wanna see your face when you see what I got you!" Kenshin began to wonder just what this girl was up to. "Um, sure?" He then set the bigger box down and started to open the smaller one. Upon seeing the custom helmet, his jaw dropped. "Kumoko! You made this?!" The girl grinned. "You like it? Well open the other one too!" Kenshin excitedly picked up the other gift and started opening it like it really was Christmas.
"Oh my god!" The look of shock and excitement on his face upon seeing the black and red hero suit had said it all. "Kumoko... this is... this is amazing!" He just stared at her in shock, not knowing what to do or say. Suddenly, Kenshin went up to Kumoko and hugged her so tightly. "Thank you so much!" The spider girl was surprised for a second having not expected the sudden hug. But then she smiled and hugged him back. "Anytime, Kenshin."
After what felt like anywhere from two minutes to two eons, Kenshin finally let go of Kumoko. "There's gotta be something I can do to pay you back for this, Kumoko. This is awesome! You're awesome!" Kumoko then shook her head. "No, you don't need to pay me back or anything. If anything, I've been meaning to thank you for saving me from those thugs a long time ago. You and G, you two are the awesome ones. You two were the ones who inspired me to stand up for myself, to join UA and help others. Besides, I'm always happy to help you, Kenshin. After all, that's what friends are for!"
Another cheerful smile. "Though if you insist on finding a way to pay me back, then all you need to do is just keep on doing what you've been doing. Saving people, protecting the innocent, fighting off villainy, you know, the usual badass things you do. Do that while wearing the suit and helmet, and that'll be enough to satisfy me." Kenshin then quickly spoke. "Wait, about that. Won't you get in trouble if someone at the school finds out you made me this?" Kumoko grinned mischievously. "What are you talking about? All I did was make a costume for a friend. There's nothing illegal about that. What you do with that costume has nothing to do with me...." She giggled as she playfully winked and stuck her tongue out.
Kumoko then began pointing out the various parts of the suit. Pockets to store things like a phone or communicator if he ever got one of those. A special utility belt that could store various gadgets. Sadly, there was not much there at the moment. Just some rope and a couple of handcuffs. "Sorry, I'm still learning how to make gadgets. But once I get better, I could send you some." Kenshin shook his head. "Don't worry about that. This is seriously amazing, gadgets or no gadgets."
She then showed Kenshin something. Something that would not show on the outside of the suit. On the inside of the shirt, Kenshin noticed a tiny golden spider sewn on the inside, right around where his heart would be. "You see that? I used my own web string and sewed that in. It's a friendly reminder that while I may not be able to physically be out there fighting alongside you, I will always support you in spirit." Kenshin smiled. "That's sweet! I really appreciate it! You know, we make a pretty damn good team. You got the support, and I got the asskicking. It's as you said earlier. That's what friends are for, right? I'll wear this suit with pride, Kumoko! Again, thank you so much!" Another hug given, and Kumoko once again happily returned it.
"Now go back inside, or your family might start wondering if we're a thing now." She snickered upon seeing the boy hastily pull away while his cheeks turned pink. "Alright, I gotta go now, or my dad might lose patience with waiting for so long. Take care!" And with a final wave, Kumoko headed back to her foster father's car, opening the car door, apologizing for taking longer than expected, and smiling as she was driven back home.
I can't wait to see the new and improved Red Edge in action.
