Rushed footsteps resounded on the stone pavement as two shadows darted into the darkness of the night. It was a cold evening, the sky above was clouded and the temperature was slightly chilly, but overall the circumstances were optimal for their mission. Emerging from amidst the trees the kunoichi and her master stepped beside a tree where a body was tied against a tree, the first to speak was her master. "You were the one who got discovered, it is your responsibility to erase the evidence that ties your existence to this infiltration." Her master's voice was cold, lacking in emotion as he handed her a knife, a gesture that spoke book chapters. A small yet firm nod was made by the kunoichi who placed her grip on the hilt of the dagger, its immense weight making it clear what she would have to do.
Taking a step forward she approached the guard that was tied to the tree, her steps seemingly alerting him out of his grogginess. "W-Wait a moment" The guard stuttered in response to her approach, seemingly noticing the knife in her hands and quickly piecing one and one together. The kunoichi stopped in her tracks, her amber eyes locked with the frightened stare of the guard. "Y-You don't have to do this!" the man exclaimed worriedly. "I won't tell anyone you were there!" An impossible thing to consider, after all a loose end was a threat, if someone knew about their infiltration it would always be a dangerous factor in their future endeavors. Her master was clear in teaching her a mission couldn't have any loose ends.
Tightening the grip on her knife the kunoichi took a step forward toward the guard whose nervousness only intensified. "Please reconsider! Y-You're not a murderer right?! I'm sure we can figure something out!" Yet the kunoichi didn't waver, a gloved hand grasping a hold of the man's hair and pulling his head upwards, giving her a clean view of his throat, all it would take was a single clean slice to silence him forever.
She brought the knife to his neck and then... "I'm sorry Darling." Wait darling? Her hand froze for a moment as the guard whispered weakly "I should have listened to you Keiko, I shouldn't have gone to work today, should have just stayed home with you and our little girl."
It then dawned onto her, that in all those times she only calculated her enemies as threats, forsaking the knowledge that they were living humans like her, people who might had family and friends, loved ones that they held dear. She could already feel her hand shaking lightly, how would those people react? How would the wife deal with the fact her husband wasn't going to ever return home? How was her daughter going to react to the fact she would be raised without a father? A single clean cut would silence the guard, but it would also destroy an entire family.
She could feel it, the way the guard had relaxed in her grip almost made it seem like he had resigned to his fate, knowing that only death awaited him. Kill and she would ensure the success of her mission, kill and she would take a life, destroying the life of this person's loved ones in the process.
A scream escaped from her, her breathing rapid as she slashed the knife along the man's throat, splatters of that warm substance hitting her mask and the parts of her face that were left exposed.
Panic overcame her mind, her entire body shook as the bloodied knife dropped onto the ground and a few unsteady steps backward were taken. A sickening feeling build up in her stomach as she felt the strength in her legs collapse under the pressure of her deed, falling onto her knees as she pulled down her mask and threw up, the corpse of the man in front of her, the image burned vividly in her mind as she finally felt her vision getting hazy, her mind blanking out.
Darkness consumed her, but unlike usually she was not alone, no this time Elise found herself in a most peculiar situation. In front of her stood the masked kunoichi known as 'Shadow', while at her side was a figure people were more familiar with, the pink-haired young lady clad in a doctor coat.
"It hurts doesn't it?" Shadow asked her, upon which Elise nodded her head feebly in return. The doctor at her side soon spoke up "Of course it does, as someone who dedicated herself to helping people, to saving them the act of killing is a consequence so severe our mind considers it a taboo."
Certainly, it felt that way but that didn't change the fact that: "Sometimes killing is a necessity." Shadow's words hit her right in the core of her being, and yet at the same time it seemed the doctor had some words of wisdom herself. "And since when did we change our priorities?"
Change... our priorities? A tense silence lingered in the air, only broken by Shadow's words shortly afterward. "We seek to improve the hero program so that people remember what true heroism is, we do those things so nobody else has to do them." And yet those words were retaliated with a curt response. "And since when did we become a martyr? Was that our dream? To become someone who would shoulder all those nasty things on her shoulders?"
A sudden tug against the back of her uniform made Elise turn backward, seeing the visage of her younger self. "I wanna become a doctor! The number one doctor! So that I can always help Tetsu!"
It was the undeniable truth, her dream had always been to become a doctor who could cure any injury her beloved Tetsuko might suffer from, a doctor who could help people with a reassuring smile, a symbol of hope.
Footsteps suddenly made her gaze turn back toward the front, seeing the kunoichi turn her back toward her. "There is your answer~ You know what you want to do, and in the end, I will always linger. Should Tetsu be in danger, all you need to do is reach out."
Slowly the steps seemed to cause the kunoichi to blend deeper into the darkness, her voice resounding through her mind.
"Remember Us..."
As she unsteadily stood up Elise saw how the guard's body was dissolving in the pink slime of her construct, while at the same time she could feel it, in the back of her mind that dangerous conviction still lingered.
"Remember that we exist."
Indeed, like two sides of a coin, the Elise who wanted to help people, to heal and save people, and the Shadow who would cut down anything that threatened her beloved Tetsuko.
"I hate making detailed simulations like this..." Elise muttered dryly
