The quietness of the evening train to Tokyo was oddly comforting for the Eisenberg lass who had quite an eventful week between Tetsuko's birthday and the preparations for her mission alongside Spymaster. Seated in one of the empty wagons the pink-haired lass held a paper note in her left hand, and her cellphone in the other, looking quietly ahead on the navigation system of her phone. It appeared that her destination was found in Kabukicho, one of the districts of Tokyo where according to rumors it was a bit less 'safe' than in other places. Not that it was comparable with the likes of the underground city, but Elise knew there was a reason people were cautious in Kabukicho, and with recent events, it was only natural that people would be on edge. But still, to think that after all this time 'he' would send her a note, and through Kouta out of all possible avenues. It made her wonder, but before she could allow her thoughts to linger on the subject the train arrived at the Tokyo station and she disembarked the wagon, making her way along the streets of Tokyo.
Fortunately, she had her special kunai with her, carefully concealed in case of an emergency, so Spymaster would be able to track her down if she got herself involved in an unpleasant encounter on the way to her destination.
Maximillian Tychus Kane, quite a troubled name in the history of the hero academy, the second student to be expelled, and a person Elise had considered a friend, although in the wake of learning what he had said and done she was somewhat uncertain what to think about him. She knew he was a troubled person, weighed down by the nature of the hero system, but at the same time, it didn't excuse his actions. However, she would be a hypocrite if she didn't at least hear him out to consider giving him a second chance.
What was Kouta's association with Maxi in the first place? An idle question that drifted through her mind as she saw the store further along the street. "O boy, you better got a solid story behind 'Kaneland' Maxi, last time I checked minors can't exactly own a business."
Musing with a hint of amusement in her voice she opened the doorway, the sudden frosty chill of the interior making her smile weakly. Right, Maxi also meant cold temperatures, but fortunately for her she preferred the cold over the humidness of summer, Japanese summers were dreadful. Stashing her phone inside the pocket of her jacket Elise stepped further inside and decided to take a look around the store while addressing the owner who was no doubt waiting for her arrival. "Not the type of location I had expected our reunion to happen at Maxi, although you could have just called? Poor Kouta-kun must had been confused about why you asked him to deliver a note to his former senpai~"
She smiled briefly, at least not showing a hint of hostility or annoyance, in fact she seemed amused if anything. "So what made you change your mind on the radio silence?"

Maxi had seen Kouta ever since the young child got lost while trying to find the train back home and, once the barkeep found the poor creature, it was already too late and the pink haired boy was seemingly starving. Of his own accord, for free that is, Maxi fed the young child, comforted him until he was smiling and had his live-in butler of the main property to come down and take the poor child back home. Since then, he had earned himself a loyal costumer for the breakfasts, to whom he always gave his favorite chocolate milkshake at a discount, having quickly learned of his family situation of not having blood relatives.
For a long while, he heard of the situation at U.A., from his daily visits to the bar and, subsequently, Maxi's own weekly visits to the hospital once the child injured himself fighting for his family. It tugged at his heartstrings, to know that he had to fight by himself against a villain. It was not his job to do so, it shouldn't be his responsibility. He could have ran but, instead, chose to stay behind and fight for his life and the safety of his family. It left Maxi weirdly proud, though also worried. How were his friends doing?
He had no actual contact with him, since he took the chat for granted. Not even one of their numbers, that was how bad it got! Even if he wanted to contact them, he had no way to do so. At first, he did nothing, since he didn't even want to talk to them. Just considering it made him feel awful inside, that he wasn't able to talk to them without fearing a repeat of Yumi's situation. Where he wouldn't be able to explain his situation without getting emotional and just push away everyone that cared about him. He knew it. He felt it. That day, when they talked, there was this underlying feeling that Yumi would accept him again as her friend if only he showed that he had truly improved, but he just showed himself to be a coward, who hadn't recovered from what he did and lived with some sort of resentment/emotional damage.
He was ready now. Ready enough to ask Kouta to take a note to Elise with the cake he offered for free for their birthday party. Now, he'd just been expecting Elise every day since, each minute of uncertainty making him feel even more on edge. Was she angry at him? Would she even show up? The guy had even learned to make a perfect apple milkshake, finding out that trying to add juice to the milk wouldn't work properly, but powdering it with his violent quirk to mix it into the milk actually helped.
Also shavings.
Worries be bygones, because she just came in and the first thing she did was question on how a minor could own property. For a second, he couldn't even speak at all, instead, just figuratively frozen in joy, staring happily at his old friend, feeling as if everything could become ok and he could go back to his old life. It was a passing thought that died in an attosecond, but it felt very nice to actually have. "My parents are serving as the in-name owners, though they handed me the control and ownership. Specially after I made my first million dollars. In yen that's like.. A billion and one yen? Whatever that is, I always deposit it in the better currency at the end of every day." Still. Having things to explain, Maxi took a few seconds to whip up the apple milkshake he had invented just for her, sliding it slowly over the counter towards her. Sitting down on one of the seats behind the counter, he sighed and finally let out the first thing, the first impression for her. "I changed on my radio silence because I finally feel ready to face the consequences my actions had on my friendships, instead of trying to avoid it, run away or push others away. Would you listen to me?"

Elise couldn't help but smile as Maxi explained the nature of his financial arrangement with his parents about the ownership of this establishment. "It actually is one hundred and eight million, six hundred and sixty thousand, nine hundred and ninety-eight with some change I guess~" Elise mused softly as if her answer was meant to be both a joke and a reminder of her bookworm smarts. "I see~ So, in the end, it still becomes Euro, I see you are a fellow man of culture~ No wonder, ever since Brittain left the European Union the British Pound lost a lot of its 'weight'" A hearty chuckle followed in return to her jest when they finally arrived at the main topic of their meeting. But first things first.
Taking a seat at the counter she looked with a hint of curiosity at the milkshake, taking a sip from it upon which she smiled briefly. Seems he still remembered her fondness of Apples, not that it was much of a secret with how much apple juice she tended to drink.
Maxi began his explanation on the changing of his radio silence policy by explaining he felt finally ready to face the consequences of his actions. It was not unheard of in the psychological field that sometimes people needed time to come to terms with certain things they experienced, but in this case it was quite a bit different from a victim coming to terms with the things they experienced. "Hmm..." She mused quietly, tracing the bottom of the glass on the counter as she listened to his request to hear him out. "You have quite a lot of consequences to deal with..." The girl muttered quietly. She had not forgotten the rumored racistic treatment Maxi gave Hachi, or even the outburst he made against the principal, two individuals she admired, and that didn't even take into consideration the reported battle between Maxi and Yoruhi was it? Gods if that happened after the establishment of the disciplinary committee she would have quite the fieldtrip with the paperwork.
Then again, second chances were difficult to earn, but she'd be a hypcrite if she didn't at least give him the opportunity to say his piece. After she brought the milkshake to her lips and took a sip from it the pink-haired lass answered him with her usual calm and gentle voice. "The least I can do is hear you out." However, before he could start she raised a finger into the air between the two of them. "But first, tell me how you have been since your 'untimely' departure from the school. Were you able to stay out of troubles? Been eating and sleeping normally?" Those questions should actually tell Maxi a lot. But nonetheless, here she was listening to the words spoken by the second student to be expelled in the history of the hero academy. Quite a peculiar situation she found herself in, but perhaps it was exactly because of who she was, that she found herself in this situation.

The same smartass that she always had been and, as far as he knew, would keep being. She still loved apple and still loved to playfully flex her book smarts on others, or at least on him, though not ever with a mean spirited intention. Elise never struck him as that sort of person, who would use her smarts to make others feel inferior or annoy them just for kicks and, so far, he had not been proved otherwise in any metric. Instead, Elise had only shown him friendliness, compassion and understanding. All he showed back was rudeness, evil, some ingratitude. To have cracked so easily with the smallest amount of pressure, compared to her who lost a parent in a villain attack and not even been able to strike back with the danger of being labeled a vigilante was much beyond anything Maxi had been put through.
Here she was though, sipping from the apple milkshake and, though she did mutter that he had a lot of consequences to face, was still smiling, friendly and giving him his chance to actually speak his mind, to give his side and explain how he changed. Maxi had spent so much time, maybe too much actually, trying to find proper words to not make himself out to be a total braggart asshole, just wishing to be honest without coming across as a bad person. He truly considered himself to be, though not a good person, at least a much better guy than before. He was still young of course, way too young to truly know the hardships of life, but he still knew what was it like to commit an irreversible mistake.
Her concerned question being the first one that she had for him did hit his tough, relaxed facade with quite some severity, wondering just why she was showing so much concern over his health and life if they both knew why she was here. Why not go to the point, why not ask him directly? When Yumi was here, she went directly to ask him if he actually attacked a teacher. Which he hadn't and he had no fucking idea how that spread. All he did was attack Yoruhi out of uncontrolled, irresponsible rage and snap at the principal. Also secretly cry because he made Hachi sad, but.. maybe he shouldn't say that.
Instead, he had a question to answer so, once he put down the other cups he had been washing, the young brit sat down, on the other side of the counter, face to face with Elise. If she wanted to know how he had been, he might as well explain. "It started out hard. I was quick to ask for this shop from my parents, a simple loan and their names to serve as the legal proprietors. Because I could barely sleep after what I had done, I just worked without any actual stop. I stopped going to school altogether, choosing to just do exams myself -- I just didn't want to be around teenagers anymore. Not again." Maxi still didn't get along with teenagers, even now that his patience and maturity had increased by leaps and bounds compared to his overly flirty, perverted nature that often got him into trouble, as well as his short fuse and hot-headed personality, unfitting of a guy who actually uses ice. He had become a much calmer person, restrained in his interactions and more respectful with his flirting. Not to mention his much more developed business nature.
Teenagers just had their stupid way of annoying him easier than most.
"Thanks to the tireless work, though, I made money. A lot of it, beyond what any guy my age should earn. I branched out from this into other things and by that I mean, at this moment, I own some real estate here in Kabuchiko and rent it out for cheap - way cheaper than others. It pays itself with the amount of people that choose to live in them and the contracts force them to maintain and keep it neat on their own dime, I just deal with things that affect the building in a wider sense." Maxi was now talking, with some passion to boot, about his business ventures. It had made him great amounts of money and, honestly, it was still increasing, leaving him richer by the minute. Of course, he continued to spend it on random shit, so he had plateau'd a bit with his progressing wealth, as well as him not taking on new business risks. A secret life had called out to him and, as far as he knew, the money he had right now sufficed just fine.
He could get more money if he actually tried harder, he was sure. There were so many demands that the quirked public had that just hadn't been met yet, with no one really wanting to risk themselves on something that had just developed and appeared. They saw risks. Maxi saw money. So, so much money.
That aside, he still had one last thing to tell Elise before she continued on to her other questions, of which he was sure she had a lot, wanting to make it clear that he hadn't become a greedy, evil businessman. Just greedy. "I stayed out of trouble too, of course. I haven't had any run-ins with the law and, of course, I let go of all of my resentment and racism. Turns out that all I really needed was exposure to the good side.
..the majority, that is." Wc: 925

Elise quietly shook the glass containing her milkshake, listening attentively to Maxi's response to her question. It seemed the initial phase after him being expelled from the academy had been a period of hardships. In the back of her mind, the medical side of her upbringing was stirring, and as she quietly sipped from the milkshake she pondered. So he was troubled by his actions, the weight and severity of his behavior and misdeeds having left him with the pressure of guilt. Understandable, if the school desired to, they could have easily filed charges for assault against Yoruhi, possibly even worse if there had been malice involved.
And so Maximillian Tychus Kane found his escape from that guilt by means of labor, a logical explanation. People often tried to find distractions to push away the more troubled thoughts that haunted them. Some might seek to do sports, others might delve into their educations with unhealthy zeal, and others dedicated themselves to their work to the point exhaustion made it quite difficult to even think back about the past.
"So you ran away from your past and avoided being confronted by it by dedicating yourself to your new business endeavors?" She didn't sound judgemental, the question might have sounded more like a psychologist talking to their client as if to make Maxi look back at his past actions and figure out for himself why exactly he didn't want to remain among teenagers anymore.
She took another sip from her milkshake as Maxi explained that in the wake of his business endeavors he obtained quite a budget which he invested into real estate if she didn't know better the teenager before her was talking like a businessman. It made sense, renting real estate had always been something of a popular method to earn money. Even generations ago it was not unheard of for a family to buy an apartment and rent it out, certainly it was an investment that only showed rewards in a longer term, but people always needed a place to stay at, and with this approach it was a long term plan that Maxi had set before himself, the focus on the financial side of things being mildly amusing to her
"Careful Maxi, money might earn you comfort, but it doesn't bring happiness~" Elise chimed softly as she took a sip from her drink while the young man clarified further that he had not had any run-ins with the law in the wake of being expelled, although the words that followed about having let go of his resentment and racism made Elise muse quietly. "Is that so?" Placing the milkshake onto the counter the young lady gazed straight at him. "Merely being exposed to the good side of things isn't a wonder medicine Maxi, like you mentioned at the end, 'the majority' suggests that there is still a lingering phantom of those feelings, correct?"
She gently leaned forward a little, her eyes locking with Maxi as she shook her head lightly. "There is no need to try to be a saint in that sense Maxi, you're a human being, it be unusual if negativity never found its grasp on you. I am no exception to this rule, even now after all this time I still resent Thunder Shock for his crimes, I hate every fragment of his existence, but here is the thing Maxi. The true challenge is in figuring out how to deal with those emotions. I could have acted upon that destructive impulse of hatred and hunted him down, leaving my loved ones troubled and worried about myself, and of course becoming a criminal in the eyes of the law."
She closed her eyes and leaned backward, her lips curving upwards into a gentle smile. "In my case, I overcome my hatred by focusing on the warmth that surrounded me, I dedicate myself not to harm, but to heal. All those years I promised Tetsu I would become a doctor that could save her from any injury, and I intend to keep that promise."
She paused for a moment, a chuckle escaping her lips as she scratched the back of her head. "Although coming to terms with such negativity is indeed not a thing people do within a few days." She placed her hands back on the counter and continued. "Let us presume you came to terms with your resentment and racism, what about your own deeds? Have you come to terms with those?"
She seemed to carry a more heavy weight with her tone, as if to make him recall the severity of his actions. "Also, as shown throughout history actions speak louder than words. How do you intend to make up for those actions of your? Your outburst against the Principal, your rasistic remarks against Hachi-sensei, your violent aggression toward Yoruhi. Surely you don't expect the passage of time to make one forget such transgressions?"
She reached for the milkshake, taking another sip from it. "In order for you to truly be able to put this part of your past behind you, you will have to take responsibility for your actions. You are no longer a child Maxi, actions have consequences, and as an adult in this society, you need to carry the weight of those consequences. The only ones who ignore those consequences are cowards who are too terrified to be confronted with them, and villains who don't care about the consequences."
She finished the milkshake after a final sip. "Surely you must have some form of plan, or thoughts about how to confront the consequences of your actions?"
After all, in order to earn forgiveness, Maxi would first need to face those shadows of his past, to take responsibility for his transgressions, and possibly be given a second chance as a person. "Phew~ All this talking makes me thirsty, fill one up again Chef~"
She hummed in a mildly jesting tone as she slid the milkshake glass back toward Maxi while awaiting his response. At the very least it seemed Elise was willing to hear him out on the events that had happened, and whether he planned to do anything about it.

Maximillian stayed quiet the entire time she spoke, knowing well that he shouldn't interrupt someone when they were saying something that important. None of what she said felt like a personal attack, though it was clear to him that she only got the biased truth. Well, at least when it came to him and Hachi. He knew what he had said, but "remarks"? In the plural. There was a serious issue with that, one that he'd definitely get to in time, however, first things first, he used his powers to dust another apple, going through the same process of making an Apple Milkshake for her, seemingly calmed by using his powers. It was a sort of outlet for him, to not let his powers and mastery over them atrophy, as well as to let go of some frustrations by being aggressive with that apple. To anyone, it just looked like he was diligently working, too. An action where there are no losers.
Maxi slid it towards her, the big, refilled cup of milkshake, in complete silence, his initial response to everything that she said. There were so many doubts and fears in him, of not knowing what he'd say or how he could even defend himself. What if he tried to clear up the misconceptions and she just didn't believe him and, instead, push back harder against him? It was his word against an entire school, so there was no reason or way that she'd believe him. There was no way anyone would ever believe him, so why was he still struggling? Resentment over being badmouthed and lied about? His desire to clear his name and let everyone know that what he did was as much evil as it was pathetic, that he wasn't some evil mastermind that got off on inflicting pain on others?
Was he just trying to grasp at some hope that he'd be accepted back into U.A. after being expelled? He knew it wouldn't happen, everyone knew it wouldn't happen. No one would accept him back. The students surely hated him, the teachers probably despised him. To those blind and deaf fools, the name Maximillian probably had the same connotation as Nick Cross. To them, he was no different than the rapist murderer eugenicistic racist terrorist. If they had their way, they both would just be executed like flea-ridden dogs, like prisoners of war being victims to some serious violations of the Geneva Convention.
This is why he hated teenagers. This is why he couldn't even stand them, not even the ones he liked as his friends. They brought out the bad memories, they came in with an attitude of accusation and witch-hunting. They brought out the worst in him, so controlling himself was diffficult.
He did control himself, though. Though he found it pointless, he'd continue to talk. "I ran away from my past, I avoided being confronted by it because nothing good will ever come out of it. I decided to go and make myself rich, because money can't buy problems, but it sure can make so many of them go away.
Besides, saying "the majority" doesn't suggest shit about my old feelings, it suggests that I didn't become blind to the reality that there are still way too many people who would rather have me exterminated or extradited. I just got to see that most just don't mind and are actually quite open to the reality that I exist."
After that, he needed a second or two to rein in his bubbling, chaotic emotions. A forceful reminder that, though it was all pointless, it still had been his choice and his request to ask Elise to come here. Sure, she's a teenager too, just like him, but she was the teenager he respected most because she was basically an adult at that point. Sure, he felt like he kept getting accused with things that were either fake, like that time he was accused of fighting teachers, or overblown like his "racist remarks towards Hachi".
But all this had been his choice. He'd have to deal with it with dignity and respect. "Besides. Though I now realize that I was wrong and blind to what I had, at the time, I felt like there was no warmth for me. I felt like I was the supplementary wheel to the big truck that was U.A., who spent so much time in the neglectful shadows that, when someone looked at me, I had long rotted away, eaten away by the rats. They'd then dump me at the side of the road, forgetting me just as quickly as they threw me aside. I was not popular. I wasn't respected and no one recognized my strength or power. Everyone who did just faded away too quickly and left me behind. Before, I had little, but by then, I was alone. At least, it felt like I did.
Eventually, I came to realize, wrongfully or not, that all I had in my daily life was an attitude of general disinterest from the people I wanted to impress, while on the outside of school, I kept getting harassed. Kicked around, insulted. They wished I was gone so many times that, eventually, I wished harder than them. I made them go away. I scared them half to death with rage and, when I finally snapped at U.A., I had no one to help me. I had no calming presence or friend who knew me better than others.
All I had was just Yoruhi acting like he always did in class. He antagonized me but, instead of taking it in stride like I usually did, teasing him back or something, I snapped. I challenged him to a fight that very instant and the poor fool said yes. I let out a single shot before I came to myself, but by that point, it was now too late. I did something I could never take back what I said and did and would be punished for it."
By that point, he was repeatedly trying to light up a cigarette that he pulled out of his pocket, his lighter flickering a few times before it actually worked, lighting it up. By now, Maxi had grown to become addicted to it, depending on it to calm his daily nerves and anger. Knowing better than so many others that it was terrible for him, he still smoked it to allow himself to calm down. It doped him up, left him being not truly himself but, as long as it stopped him from saying or doing something stupid again, he'd smoke as many of those as needed. He continued, now occasionally blowing a cloud of smoke away from Elise, letting a slight influence from his winds to make the smoke go directly to the vents and out of the building. "I cannot go back to U.A. and I can't have my friends back. I can't have the old life I had and, thanks to it, I live my daily life following only money, without any friends or acquaintances. Thankfully, I still have my girlfriend, so I'm not about to mentally collapse and turn into a vengeful villain, so you don't have to worry about that. Still. I don't know how I'll apologize to all of them. I may have said a single racist thing towards Hachi and immediately regretted it, I was in immense emotional distress and didn't think twice about what I was about to say, but.. I wronged her in so many other ways. I promised her that I wouldn't lose myself to it and, still, I went insane. I shot Yoruhi and there's no way I can justify it, nor is there a way that he'd forgive a guy he already hated. And I have no way to apologize to a man I know I'll never be able to get along with. I realize now that he had no fault for what happened to everyone at Semper Fi, that he was on our side the entire time.. but how am I ever to trust him?
How will I explain to a man who never felt or went through anti-quirked racism that I lashed out at him out of frustration over it and that I'm sorry?
Elise. I don't want to run away anymore - but I don't know how to face it either. I asked to talk to you because I knew you'd likely be the only one who would help me instead of shoot accusations and wish death upon me. The only one who doesn't look at me the same way they look at Nick Cross. Please. Help me." At that point, Maxi bowed quietly, a Japanese custom that he followed out of respect and true need. Without the help of someone like her, he'd never be able to put a rest on his past and finally let go of his regrets. Without those regrets, nothing would hold him back anymore.

After she had spoken her piece she had gone quiet, allowing Maximillian to give his response to the statements that were given. In the end, it was only natural that in a proper conversation between adults, that she gave him the opportunity to provide his side of the story. Elise hated nothing more than to base her decisions and opinions on partial information, it was why she was so adamant in the fact that even as the shinobi serving as Spymaster's successor, that she still allowed her own decisions to be made based on the information she obtained, and her feelings relevant to the matter.
"Thank you~" Elise mused softly as Maxi slid the cup back toward her, inwardly her mind was trying to figure what the consequences would be. She might have not the power of foresight, but she could anticipate some things. Tetsuko, for example, was a person who valued actions over words and would without a doubt require a more throughout convincing by means of his actions rather than explanations. The school? He likely would need to forget about that, aside from the fact it was incredibly rare for an expelled student to be allowed to return to the same school, a high profile place like the hero academy came with so much media attention and government involvement, that it was doubtful they would want to take the risk.
As he responded Elise nodded her head lightly, so he tried to run away from his past, desperately trying to avoid being confronted by it, and yet if there was one thing Elise knew then it was... "You might be able to run away from your past, but you can't escape it Maxi. There will always be traces, whether it's paperwork, reports, rumors, or those personally involved." She took a gentle sip from the milkshake and then continued her response. "That it why it is important to someday confront it. You're correct in your statement that money can make problems go away, but the act of bribery to make them disappear is a dangerous path to traverse."
Indeed, what if the ones who had their problems disappear, only made them disappear for a while? What if they came to demand more money from Maxi? It was a saying her father often taught her: Money makes life easier, but it buys you neither happiness or true friendship. She could only hope that the young man in front of her would realize the same thing her father had been trying to teach her all those years ago.
Ah right, there was a bit of the side to Maxi that she was worried about. "Indeed, there might be people who look unfavorable upon you, others who might not care. But what is it that 'you' want Maxi? To let the former get to you, to stir those memories of the past, or to show those people that you're better? That you're not the type of person they made you out to be."
"Hmm..." She paused for a bit, allowing her hand to go free from the base of the milkshake cup and instead tapped her cheek lightly. "It is the harsh truth that the current state of things makes not just the hero academy, but the hero program as a whole incredibly competitive. If you fit in or excell, you can ride the wave and feel like you have a glorious experience, but what about those who are not among the top with their peers? They struggle finding their place, they lose sight of the importance of 'what they have and can do', too focused and obsessed with the gaps between themselves and their peers. It's a problematic situation..."
Elise shook her head lightly as he continued, letting him explain how he felt like he was neglected entirely. "Popularity is like beauty in the eye of the beholder. You mention respect, popularity, recognition for your strength. Those things aren't claimed by force Maxi, at least not true respect, it's earned, but like I mentioned, the competitive nature of the hero program makes it that there is way too much focus played on raw strength alone."
She reached back for the cup, pausing as she listened further to his explanation. Like she had expected, there had been outside influences that compiled to Maxi's stress, which finally gathered all together in the outburst that led him to get expelled from the hero academy. Her expression remained calm, listening as he explained how Yoruhi's provocations had finally escalated into the fight that everyone knew about.
The lighting up of the cigarette only earned a brief blink from Elise, who had not known Maxi smoked, but she disregarded the detail, having been used to such things after her meeting with Kanna in the past. She pulled her milkshake a bit closer, although noticing the unusual manner the smoke moved and felt a bit glad that there was still that side of Maxi that she knew from back then, a side that still cared about others.
"And there we have the full story now~" Elise mused softly, taking another sip from the glass as she started speaking. "Before thinking of the results, think of what you 'should' do. Let us theoretically focus on those things. Whatever you might have said to Hachi-sensei in the past, do you think her to be that cruel that she won't at least hear you out? If you were to ask my opinion, showing that you are genuinely apologetic for your action will be your first step forward, whether she forgives you or not, it shows that you are committed to doing the right thing."
She tapped a hand lightly against her cheek, thinking a bit further. "Yes, I doubt that even I could put in enough of a good word to allow you to return, disregarding the opinion of the faculty and the student body, the hero academy has a lot of attention both from the media and the government, if anything the decision would be in the board's decision that oversees the school."
Then there was the matter of Yoruhi, which she shook her head at. "Still remains a matter of showing who is the more mature out of you two, someone who admits their wrongs, even if he is partly to blame, is more of an adult than one who refuses any form of reconciliation. You're not expected to suddenly become best buddies."
Yet the last part was one she had expected and was prepared for, pulling a hand in her pocket she mused softly. "The reason you have no way of apologizing to him is because you, just like those who hate you, are blinded by a cliff forced upon humanity by racism. You forget that the two of you are, at their base still human beings."
She pulled out the paper of the news article surrounding the 'miraculous' surgery she had done a few months ago. "You likely seen it on the news, did you know my patient was one of the very soldiers that shot me during Semper Fi? You must be wondering why I'm crazy enough to tend to a man who tried to kill me. The answer is simple Maxi: Because divided our society will fall."
She shook her head firmly as she continued. "Fiends like Thunder Shock, villains like Abbandon WANT you to start hating each other, and by letting those feelings cloud your judgment, you're playing exactly in the cards of those villains. I decided to try to break that cycle of violence and racism by saving that soldier, and it paid off. Even now I hear how more and more of his former comrades are joining various volunteering efforts to unite Quirkers and Quirkless people."
She grasped for the milkshake, finishing it with a long sip as she continued to address the final matter of their conversation. "About the Principal, if not for his clearance for us to defend ourselves, quite a few of us might have died that day. Kobayashi Touma takes a heavy responsibility on his shoulders, but in the end he is still a human being. So tell me Maxi, are you going to try to deal with this as a fellow human, or will you let your emotions make yourself a puppet to the schemes of villains?"
She lowered the glass back on the table and smiled calmly. "I believe you're better than that. It's why I decided to come here to hear your side of the story. Certainly, the world might had seen that violent and racistic outburst of yours, but I recall the playful and charismatic teenager who cared about others and who he tried to help in his own way, the same teenager I tended to in the infirmary that day."
She leaned back in her seat, musing softly. "But you do have a long road ahead of you if you are brave enough to overcome your past. But it's not a road you walk alone. Just remember, actions speak louder than words."

By that point, Maxi was quietly ticking the side of his tongue against his molars by sucking air through it, letting out a distinct "Tsk" sound, much deeper than the usual sound that people could make by sucking air through the front teeth. Obviously because doing it through the front would suck in the cigarette. Or the second one he was lighting up, using the old schoolyard trick of pressing the two tips together to light up the second one, sliding it into his mouth as well. That only came out when his emotions were really going out of wack, a pot on the verge of a steam explosion where everything goes wrong.
Teenagers tick him off so badly. Well, this one was ticking him off, not for fault of her own or choosing the wrong words, but because she was just doing so well that it was forcing his mind into tough spots. As his life, his past, his present and possible future flashed before his very eyes, he was left wanting to be left alone and forgotten by all that had met him before by this point, realistically thinking that no one would ever want to speak to him, no matter what words or actions he tried. Teenagers are shit like that. Once bad, always bad. Redemption is something that does not exist and people do not change. Frankly, if he didn't have a girlfriend he'd likely have completely snapped and become a serial killer who only targets teenagers - and the ice boy knew this, just how on the edge of crumbling his psyche could get sometimes.
"You really think anything can ever change, Elise? If that ain't the most naive thing you've told me today. Or maybe, I'm thinking too little of them all." Maxi turned to her again, two cigarettes in between his lips, feeding him that nicotine he desperately needed to curb himself, the smoke still lightly flying towards the vents to be pushed off into the outside. That look of pitiable hopelessness that only a british man could pull off painted in his face, letting it show just how little he believed in the good of people. Teenagers, mostly. "If I do nothing, they'll continue to speak of me as the sequel to Nick Cross. If I try to show them that I've changed through actions, they'll call me the sequel to Nick Cross who tried to hide what he did under fake good actions. You know how these little despisable dipshits are, girl. There's no way for a man to redeem himself after failing like I have. There's no way to improve in their eyes and someone changing is an entirely alien concept to them.
Once bad, always bad. It has been like this for almost a century and it shows no signs of ever actually changing."
What an emotional rollercoaster. From going to wanting his friends back and the people he loved to realizing just how useless it all is and how little he actually wants them back, since he knows what'll just happen. Why should he try improving for people who won't care? They could all die and Maxi's life would quantifiably improve, with those loads off of his mind. Less people that know what he did, less people that can pester him about it, less people to act like self righteous dickshits in front of him to sustain their egos.
They were never worth a thing and, thanks to talking to Elise, he really could reflect on how little they were worth to him. The adults were different. Those still held an actual dear place in his heart.
"..Relating to Hachi and the principal, though.. you are correct. Hachi deserves a proper apology that isn't just snide sarcasm and cockiness veiling my sadness and the principal.. yes. Yes, you are right. I think like this because I believe that there is a divide that there's no way of ever crossing, without ever actually trying to build a bridge myself. What I said to him is unforgivable and, at the soonest opportunity, I must try to solve this as well as I can. They both deserve it, for all the crap I put them through, at no fault of their own."
Was Maxi acting like a boomer at this point? Hating his own generation and having a soft spot for the older generation? It was likely that they were part of a generation just as detestable in their time. This hatred of his own generation over the crap that past generations also did might be dangerous and stupid. Though it also brings the great option of waiting until everyone grows up so that he can try to reconnect with now matured people who aren't stupid. "Back to the other students.. I don't know what to tell you that would make you happy, mostly because none of this pleases either of us. I want to overcome my past, but really for the people who are worth it. I must make right with the principal and Hachi. The others..?
God, just.. fuck them. Fuck them all the way to hell. Fuck them for this stupid fucking competitive climate, fuck them for their cryptic, fucked subliminal demands to show the minimum amount of respect to someone else's efforts, fuck their cliques, fuck their drama, fuck their irresponsibility and fuck the yes-men that keep this fucked, shit system going and, most importantly, FUCK THEM. Among the dozens, hundreds of people I've met there, I can count the people I still hold in my heart with the fingers on my right hand. The others?
Fuck them. They've given me nothing but misery and self confidence issues. I won't try to fix anything with people I can't even stand to see in front of me. If they hate me that much, if they see me as a sequel to Nick Cross and nothing can change it as I know it can't, then the least I owe them is distance, apathy and no contact."
By that point, half of his face, the cigs and the floor below him had deep frozen in his almost unshackled rage. Upon noticing this, he took the cig-blocks out of his mouth, throwing it to the trash while punching a code into a safe neatly hidden below one of his tables, taking out a small bottle of assorted pills and popping a whole few of them into his mouth. He might have a problem. He knows he has one, though there's no willpower or a sense of urgency in him to fix this anymore.

Maxi's inquiry about whether anything would ever change or not left the girl quiet for a moment. Change was something difficult, especially a positive change. It was perhaps even more difficult when that change had to come within. For a moment she closed her eyes, trying to think carefully on the matter. "Change is a very difficult thing to accomplish. However, I firmly believe that there are things that can change. The main obstacle is that such a change needs to be set into motion. Someone needs to want this change to happen, and in this case, the change you desire partly is depending on you also."
Elise listened attentively to Maxi's words, his decision to call her 'girl' when she was as a matter of fact older than him being mildly amusing, yet she didn't show it at all in her expression. No, instead she took in consideration Maxi's belief that he would always be judged as a second Nick Cross, the traitorous student who turned into a terrorist. But to this Elise could only sight audible. "Actually there has been close to no talk about you after your departure. Perhaps some credit to your claims that you stayed out of trouble." She opened her eyes and gazed quietly at him. "..." A light shake of her head followed as she resumed speaking. "There is no need to lecture me on the cruelty of teenagers. Remember, I'm the one who till a year ago had the o so wonderful Quirk that caused her bodily fluids to regenerate any injury. Quite an amusing punching bag, right?" She spoke in jest, although there was a certain coldness to the joke. "And yet, let me ask you another question: What about the kind boy you send to deliver that cake? What about Kouta-kun? He is a teenager, just like the others of his age, and yet in your blind hatred you're readily painting him under the same brush as those who have wronged you."
She leaned back against her seat, listening further at how Maxi expressed his thoughts about feeling the need to apologize at least to Hachi and the Principal. Yet as he resumed speaking about the other students she couldn't help but sigh audibly. "There you go again, painting everyone under the same brush. However, has it never occurred to you that the problem might not only be found among the teenagers but the system in general? Then why I wonder, have you never considered trying to change the system? Instead, you closed yourself off from those seeking help from those sharing similar concerns."
She raised her hands onto the table, locking her hands together while resting her chin on them to look at Maxi. "Do you want to know why you never did that Maxi? Because deep inside you are afraid of even trying. Which surprises me, to be honest, I never took you for a coward."
She sighed gently, pressing her hands against the counter while contemplating her next choice of words. "Your concerns about the system are shared by quite a few people. Yes, even someone like me can see just how flawed the system is. Yet, as long as you're lamenting your own problems, you won't change a thing, either for yourself or for the system. Not that I blame you for not wanting to try to change the latter, it's a long and complicated process. But in time it can change. But what do I know~ I'm not a hero, never intended to become one either. You know why Maxi? Because in a certain way we are similar."
Words that would surely surprise him. Still, Elise has never bothered to deny it, the fact that she always had her priorities. "I always placed Tetsuko on the first spot, followed closely by my friends, helping others is merely a positive byproduct of those priorities. In that sense we are similar: I do not care about strangers if I help them it usually is simply convenient for me. All things considered, I'm quite a selfish young woman, right?"
A momentary moment of silence followed as she stretched her arms forward over the table, attempting to flick the teenager's forehead lightly. "Nonetheless, you have your own path to walk, your own choices to make Maxi. All I can do as your friend is give you advice on how to proceed, what you end up deciding to do with it is your choice."
But there was still a point that needed to get discussed, one she felt important to mention. "But you are no Nick Cross. Nick Cross was a traitorous student who later was revealed to be a terrorist, a man that act purely out of malice and his own interests. But you Maxi? When I look at you right now I see a conflicted teenager who is lost in this labyrinth we call society."
Indeed, if Maxi had been Nick Cross he would likely have had to deal with several impalement attempts by now, rather than her sipping a milkshake. "Also a word of cautious, I'm turning nineteen next month, which means I am your senior in age 'boi'" She smirked at Maxi at her jest and after a moment decided to let him in on one more detail. "Although, if you're wondering, I myself am not staying at the hero academy anymore..."
Indeed, her path had become a different one to traverse. "Quite a lot of things happened, and as I mentioned, there are people trying to force a change into the system, I'm one of those people. And before you ask, no I'm not going to visit your shop in a suit so you can chuckle at me. I still feel awkward about wearing one, always liked to dress more girlish I guess, but if I show up dressed like a ninja, or wearing a fancy dress people will likely start asking questions." She chuckled weakly before she muttered softly. "You do know taking that many reduce the medicine their efficiency right?"
