| if i'm a danger to myself Just think what I could do to you |
Byeol-Su could not feel the emotions of her host. Although she could hear their thoughts this time around, which made communicating a lot easier, that was still a glaring flaw, and she didn’t even have a face to look at to really make out an expression. Luckily for her Suzume and Ayama shared faces. Sort of. So when she saw the faint huff on Suzume’s face, she could assume a little about Ayame’s own feelings. Or maybe not? The two of them shared thoughts, they weren’t the same person. It was like how she didn’t become the same person as whoever was hosting her.
He doesn't like them? That’s so dumb. Your mushrooms are cool, even if I couldn’t figure out how they worked, Byeol-Su tried to cheer up Suzume a little, a pulse of amusement tinted with just a trace of fear beating through the bond with Ayame, But I guess my ears aren't normal ears. I almost ate it actually. That should, uhh, tell you how smart I really am.
She was smart. Well, smart for a girl in her position. A girl who’d been locked in a box for most of her life and only allowed to see the world through somebody else’s eyes the majority of the rest of it.
As the two of them--one of them--Ayame peeked her head into the classroom Byeol-Su’s eyes looked out from her own. The people inside were all so young. Not as young as her, but still young. It was funny being around so many people like that. She was more used to adults these days. She didn’t have too long to stare at the strange shape of the boy’s head or the other two, but when Ayame’s gaze snapped to a much more familiar face, Byeol-Su squeaked with excitement. They’d found her!
But, boo, that meant this was going to go by so quickly.
Except it really wasn’t, as Ayame pulled back and away from the classroom, because she wasn’t alone. They needed to be close to her, not her friends.
Shoot.
Hm.
Do you see a closet in sight of the door? Even by a little bit? If we find one, I can put my eye on your finger, and watch the doors for her. When she leaves we can follow her. But it might take a while.
Were we told not to make a big scene? I can’t remember.

OPERATION: SCHOOL GIRL THE TWINS CHUCKLED TO THEMSELVES at Byeol-Su’s remark. That would have been silly to eat a mushroom. But plenty of people were silly like that. Besides, Byeol-Su thought that they were cool, which exempted her from being judged for acts of silliness.
The two—erm, three—young, misplaced teens lingered in the hallway, discussing their options. Hiding in a closet, Byeol-Su proposed?
You can put your eye on my finger, Ayame echoed, clearly amused by the concept?! She pointed a slender finger at Suzume, and Suzume silently laughed at the notion. Imagine that, watching someone with your fingers. How novel.
The two green-skinned girls calmed themselves, and began to stroll down the hallway, inspecting the doors that lined the hall. Most were the kind of doors that slid, with windows to peek through. Not closets at all. Finding nothing deeper into the hallway, they turned to pace towards the stairs again. Near the stairs was a different kind of door—nondescript and windowless, with a grill at its base.
Ayame gasped a faint “ah!” of revelation, gesturing for her sister to follow. The two hastened towards the door, and Suzume eagerly grasped for the handle, tugging at it with all of her weight. Ayame glanced up the hall, towards the classroom where their mark was. She knelt low to the ground, as if peering through the grill.
The knob of the door turned in Suzume’s grasp, but the door was stuck tight, despite not being locked. Suzume tugged again, forcefully, and fell back into her sister from the effort as the door finally gave way.
The door swung open to reveal a collection of brooms, propped against the walls and a deep sink, above which sat stacks upon stacks of towels. They… might be able to fit in there if they moved the brooms.
Not the best, Suzume remarked.
What choice do we have, Ayame sighed, It’s only for a little bit. You first.
Eh?!
ParaSyte and I need to be closer to the door. Move!
Suzume made a petulant expression, as if she was about to protest, but then complied. She stepped gingerly over broomsticks and tucked herself into a corner, up-ending a bucket to sit upon.
Ayame followed shortly after, finding a place upon the floor that was flush with the door. It’d be snug, but that was alright. Neither of them sat in an entirely ladylike position, either, but neither sister seemed to care.
Door please, Suzume, Ayame thought to her sister.
Suzume uttered a quiet growl, standing-up just enough to get the door and pull it shut. They had somehow clambered into the closet without a hitch. No outside intervention or nagging inquiries, nothing—
The chain for a single lightbulb glanced Suzume’s temple. She tugged it once, casting a weak yellow light upon the pair—er, trio.
Will you be able to see through this, Ayame asked, lowering her eyes towards the grate near the base of the door? If she looked at just the right angle, she could see the doors to the classroom where their mark was hiding, but too much wiggling and it was obscured by the strips of metal.

| if i'm a danger to myself Just think what I could do to you |
Watching the two twins working out a place to hide through their--her--Aya's eyes was pretty funny. Their trains of thought were nearly identical, as was their reaction to the tiny little "room"--if one could call it that--they finally found. Poor Suzume getting squished in the back like that. Next time she would be sure to use her as a host instead. Would there be a next time? The three of them worked pretty well together, and this was the first and probably only time she'd be able to talk to a host and use one of her eyes at the same time. That was very good, and very useful, right? Maybe when she told him about it, he'd insist that Ayame and Suzume join them.
They'd probably be happier with them than with Thunder or his goons.
And Iseul wouldn't be bothered by how they looked or spoke at all. He'd probably be fascinated by it. He might even like it. But even if they only got to visit now and then instead of stay forever, Byeol-Su would be happy.
It was nice to have a friend--two for the price of one!--around her age.
Once Ayame and Suzume had settled into the "room", Byeol-Su focused her self through the haze that connected her and Ayame together, and pushed it towards her--their--Ayame's fingertip. It became grayer the more she focused, until, like a weird sort of wart or bug-bite, a bump raised up on it. Then the "skin" over it split in two, and it opened, revealing a little eye with a dark violet iris. It blinked, then looked at Ayame and Suzume.
I see you! A pulse of excitement went through the bond. Hello!
She watched her eye get placed against the grate at the bottom of the door, and simultaneously could see out of said grate into the hall beyond. It was weird seeing through three eyes, especially when one was nowhere near the other two, but it hadn't bothered her in a long time. If she hadn't been able to get over that, then he'd be totally unable to see, ever.
This works just fine--I can see the classroom door! Now we just wait. Um. Know any games to pass the time? Do you know how to play shiritori? It's a word game, but it's still really fun, and can help to teach Japanese better.

OPERATION: SCHOOL GIRL SOMETHING WAS HAPPENING NEAR AYAME'S FINGERTIP, which the more cerebral twin watched with a scholarly curiosity. It ballooned almost imperceptibly, going from green to gray. And, just when it was starting to become orb-like, it split, revealing a tiny, purple eye. It was somewhat familiar, but totally foreign. Ayame bared her fangs in a delighted smile, showing the eye to her sister.
Hello! the pair chorused, doing their best to muster quiet laughs. Ayame sat a little taller, since her two normal eyes weren’t really needed, she supposed. She balanced her other fingers on the grate at the bottom of the door so that her index finger was steady.
Through the hivemind, Ayame felt the quiet pulse of how weird it was to have three eyes, with one so far removed from the other two. Subconsciously, she also closed her two eyes, hoping to help ParaSyte focus on the hallway beyond. Perhaps she could even take a nap… would that interrupt their surveillance, though?
Ayame leaned back, her back resting against a shelf filled with large, pungent plastic bottles. Suzume surveyed her nails.
It was then that ParaSyte proposed a game to pass the time. Ayame adjusted her weight, and Suzume sat a little taller.
We do not know shiritori, Ayame confessed.
Teach us, Suzume agreed.

Oh, they didn't know shitori? That was alright! It was a pretty easy game for people to learn and after that it was just a matter of playing. And since they were all sharing thoughts, the language barrier didn't seem to be a problem at all. Would it make it easier or harder to play, though, if your word was the very first one that came to mind, with no filter between that and what you said aloud? They'd only be able to find out if they played it.
The rules are easy! Somebody starts with a word, and then the next person says a word that starts with the letter or character that word ended with. But if you end a word with the letter "N" then you've lost. Or the sound "N" since you don't know your letters. Sometimes we make it harder by saying all the words have to be something in particular, like everything has to be a food, or an animal, to make it more fun!
We don't have to do it with those limits though. Since you might not know all the names of animals or foods, I don't think it would be as fair.
Not that she knew every word in the world, either, but whatever.
I'll start. Hmmm. My word is "school"!
.
.
.
Time was passing; not so slowly as to be unbearable, but not so fast that they had missed anything while playing their game. The lunch period had ended and students returned to the room, and after them came teachers to teach their subject before moving onto the next room after their class slot was over. A couple of students left at times, to get a drink or use the toilet or whatever they wanted to do, but not the one they were waiting for.
Not until about forty-five minutes had passed. Byeol-Su had lost track of who had won (or lost) however many games they had played, not that that mattered much; but upon seeing the sour-faced girl from the photograph exit the classroom and start down the hall toward the bathrooms, a loud pulse of excitement disrupted whoever's turn it had been.
She's out! And alone! Hurry, now's our chance!

OPERATION: SCHOOL GIRL THE PAIR WAS QUIET AS ParaSyte explained the rules of the game, curious yet reluctant to try it out. Idle time was often filled with sunning oneself on the ground, or swimming, sleeping, or hunting. So such time-passing games were completely foreign. Besides which, their grasp of written language was… debatable. But when ParaSyte described the words phonetically, it made… a little more sense.
School… Suzume repeated, breathing a low “hrrrrm”.
Heart! Ayame interjected eagerly. The volley would continue in the din, the three psychically suggesting words in the snug little closet. Admittedly, as time ticked by, Suzume’s attention thinned. She didn’t have the mind for word games, and started to doze in the corner. Ayame, however remained sharp as ever as they approached a near hour in-hiding.
Suzume had fallen silent, but Ayame scarcely noticed in favor of playing this game with her new friend. She was about to propose the word, Fox! When ParaSyte interrupted her.
The exclamation compelled Ayame to her feet, who carefully freed her hand from the grate so as not to hurt the eye-stalk. Then, with decidedly less care, she nudged Suzume with her toe, hissing across the psychic bond.
Wake up! Our girl is on the move!
When this garnered no response, Ayame kicked Suzume’s shoe.
Wake up!!
A groan of discontent, but some movement, followed.
Moments later, the odd pair (trio?) emerged from the broom-closet, heralded by clouds of spores, which had filled the space in their stationary time. Ayame’s head swiveled left and right before pinpointing their mark, just up the hall.
She kept her steps slow and silent, her heart hammering against her ribs. Ayame kept close to the wall, where she could duck out of view if necessary… and she did, a few times, when she worried that their mark would look back. Suzume followed along, still groggy from her surprise-nap.
It had been ParaSyte’s prompting that had compelled them from the broom closet, so it was to ParaSyte they looked to for guidance. In a way, she had become the leader of this expedition.
Their target slipped through a door into a new room, this one marked with the picture of a girl upon a plastic placard. Ayame and Suzume remained at the door, reluctant. Their mission had been to follow her home, right…? So to follow her to the bathroom…
Now what? Suzume asked groggily, still rubbing at her eyes. Ayame glanced back at her, then at the door. She pushed the door open with the palm of her hand, and slipped inside. Suzume followed. From their vantage point, they could see a pair of shoes beneath the door of one of the stalls.

Byeol-Su momentarily lost sight as the twins moved about, her eye getting swung around with the movements of Ayame's hand and making her a little dizzy. She closed it and withdrew it back into her skin, and when she came back into focus she was seeing through their--her--Ayame's eyes again as they clambered out into the hallway. The girl wasn't moving quickly. She probably didn't want to. The more time out of class the better, if Byeol-Su could guess anything about her character from anime tropes.
They crept along behind her quietly, until she finally turned into the girl's toilet and they lost sight of her. Suzume's sleepy question got a little beat of quiet thoughtfulness over the bond. If we need to get info from her, we need to keep her in place. Are there questions we should ask her? Or were we supposed to keep away from her?...one of us should stay near the door to listen for people coming. We don't want to be seen now. And we can speak to each other this way so she won't be able to hear us, right?
Let's wait out of sight of the stall until she comes out. Then I can make a mouth. I can talk to her with words, and ask her questions, if we have any...

OPERATION: SCHOOL GIRL THE PAIR WAIVERED UNCERTAINLY AS their passenger directed them, moving seemingly at Parasyte’s behest. First, they were directed to go in—to question the other girl—Suzume grabbed the door’s handle.
But then, they were advised to keep their distance—Suzume released the handle yet again. The sisters exchanged glances, uncertain. One go, one follow… both go… uh…?
Inside there was a rusted-over creak of something metallic, some shuffling, and then silence. Ayame grabbed the door’s handle and pulled it open, and the two slipped in.
The room that they entered was mostly covered in cool, strangely colored squares of stone, with sinks protruding from the wall and partitions with doors over the entrances that didn’t fully conceal what lay within. Too many toilets, all unoccupied. How funny, to see so many toilets in one place. Until now, the sisters had only seen rooms with a single toilet inside.
But where was the girl…?
Window! Suzume hissed sharply. Ayame followed her sister’s gaze towards the window at the far end of the room. It was a small window, perhaps meant for ventilation of the small, claustrophobic hall of toilets, and it was thrown open onto the outside, sunlight filtering into the room.
Beyond the window, their mark was stealing hastily across the schoolyard, her bag slung over her shoulder.
The pair stole towards the window—it was a narrow opening, but they were small statured—with a little wriggling, they squirmed their way through.
Their mission was to tail the girl—and she was getting away.
