((Part 5 of Deguchi's saga))
By now, Hotarubi Deguchi had run the circuit. She had reached out to UA's teachers to build her platform. She'd commissioned help from an unconventional source- i.e., a literal possum. She'd sought help from one of the big mover-shakers in the military-industrial complex. She'd even reached out to a member of the current government for strategy advice against her opponent, Higashide. One could call her over-prepared at this point, but there was still an important, dark cloud looming over her whole campaign: her recent, inadvertent arson, perpetrated in the cherry blossom park in Tokyo.
Interacting with Hye-Rin had convinced Deguchi she needed to make a campaign donation to that park and have a new tree planted, as a way of compensation. She couldn't have that donation traced, however, or it would draw all the more suspicion to her campaign. So far, no one had any credible way to tie it to her, but the more conspiracy theorists dug into it, the more they were going to discover: the time of the incident, her whereabouts at the time, what could cause a tree to be immolated in a spot like that, why no one had moved forward to claim the arson... any number of questions pointed back to her. Deguchi couldn't stop them from digging. What she could do: make sure she was fully protected when the brunt of those theories came down against her. The most likely time for this to occur: during her upcoming address to the people, the last she'd get to make, sharing the stage with her political opponent. Higashide would love to take that opportunity to bring that particular conspiracy against her.
Maybe she deserved it. She could not, however, afford it.
That's where her new friend, Libra, came in. To her, this was a necessary evil. Her campaign couldn't afford to die for this one little mistake; the people of Komae, Tokyo needed a mayor who would wave the flag for a quirker-friendly government. How far the government should extend into those affairs could be addressed later; for now, the important part was making sure that the government itself wasn't looking at them as second-class citizens or playing us vs. them against non-quirkers and quirkers. Yes, Deguchi knew she was making a deal with the devil: she'd need to perpetrate this lie in order to keep her campaign afloat. That said, she was totally unaware of just the nature of that devil, whom she'd accepted a card from earlier and now sought legal council from. In truth, Libra was the kind of criminal to whom burning down a tree with an errant sneeze was a laughably small-time crime. The irony was known only to Libra, not to Deguchi.
Seated at an oak table with an over-sized cup of coffee in hand, Deguchi kicked her crossed leg up and down unconsciously, perhaps due to said coffee. She'd never heard of Libra's reputation before and had no idea what to expect, but right now, the promise for relatively inexpensive legal coverage was too good to pass up, and having a lawyer who wasn't constantly making funny looks at her jaw and tongue was all the better. She was willing to take a chance. Taking another long chug of coffee and then shaking her shoulders in a jittery way, she watched the door she'd come in from. Libra ought to be through with her papers at any moment. Here, Deguchi would be relying on that attorney-client privilege to its fullest extent, as she'd be forced to admit her involvement in that arson if she wanted to fully prepare herself for how to mitigate the damage to her campaign.

She got interested and decided to take up Deguchi as a client. Nuff said.
Maybe it was out of boredom. Maybe she wanted to take a ride on this train wreck. Or better yet, maybe she wanted to help build it up, to the point of near victory, only to see it crumble down due to outside factors out of their control...or maybe she wants to choke her backstage when she wants to make her climatic speech. Ya know it's hard to decide, really. Which one is funnier: help her out or let it crash and burn in front of her...and yet...the idea of helping her out is just...it's kinda like a project. A project she wants to be involved with. It sounds....entertaining.
Not gonna lie though, if she spills that coffee in front of her and stain the carpet and , then she will blow a fuse and kill her right there on the spot. No one will blame her for doing it...well they will, in fact they will freak out when they see a gray skinned woman choking out a woman while laughing. But it's the thought that counts. it counts a lot in her mind.
The lawyer was told that she had a client in her 'office.' It wasn't a big place, but it was well known. At the very least they got good jobs. Deguchi gave her an offer and out of a whim she took it. And now she was here to actually go through it. That's hilarious. If she were in Libra mode she would be laughing her ass out as she bangs her fist against the wall. The banging is because she can't contain herself on how hilarious it is. But she still has to like...keep up appearances around here. So...Tachibana's just laughing inside her head.
So...what did she need to do? Well first thing's first: Deguchi needed some good ol fashioned counseling of the law variety. She needs someone to tell her how to make sure people don't laugh at her or insult her over the tree burning incident (which by the way is still hilarious and she would have killed to just be there to witness it). She needs someone to let her in the trade secret on how public relations can be mended. What she needs...
Is a get out of jail card.
She enters the room holding the required files she needs to discuss. Slightly turning on her quirk, she adjusts her glasses to hide it as she finds her way to her desk, looking at Deguchi messing around with her position. She would say something, but how can she justify saying "oh yeah can you fucking stop moving your legs, I can see you damn it?" when she already established that she's blind? So she bumps on the desk, 'accidentally.' "Gah. Swore the desk was farther way...Anyway. Pyra Tachibana here." She places the documents on the ground as she sits down. "So, Hotarubi Deguchi. What is the matter in which you are here to discuss about?" She says in a professional tone

Deguchi craned her long neck around to see Libra approaching, files in hand. Her tongue hung from her mouth, giving her a sloppy or at least a little crazy look, as she greeted her lawyer with a smile. The nervous leg kicking didn't stop; perhaps Deguchi felt comfortable doing it, thinking her acquaintance wouldn't see it. Or perhaps she'd just drank too much dang coffee. It was probably a little bit of column A and B.
Libra couldn't have missed the heckling at the rally where Deguchi had been confronted about her possible role in an arson at the cherry blossom park in Tokyo City. Either she wanted some clarification, as a professional, or she wanted to make Deguchi say it, as a sadist. Deguchi assumed the former, having no reason to assume the latter. Putting on as casual of a smile for her friend, forgetting that said friend was blind, she shrugged the padded shoulders of her suit and gave a sigh. "Ah, well, it shouldn't really be an issue at all, but I've been tied up in this whole arson conspiracy. Some of my detractors- Higashide-supporters, to be sure- are pinning it on me. You've heard about it, riiiight? The cherry blossom tree that burned down, almost spread to the whole orchard, yada yada... They place me there at the time, but if you ask me, it's all anti-quirker sentiment that's got them whipping themselves into a frenzy," she sighed, shaking her head like she was above it.
She hadn't meant to keep stringing Libra along, but it was just too embarrassing to admit she'd set that tree alight with an allergic sneeze. With an awkward expression, her tongue hanging out and one eyebrow raised, she held both hands out, palms upright, upon the table. "But say, hypothetically, that some sort of testing finds out that the tree did perish by some sort of, I don't know, laser weapon, similar to the one my tongue emits. That could reflect very, very poorly upon my campaign! People would be asking me why I didn't come forward, is my quirk a danger to others, all that rhetoric! Anti-quirker sentiment would be stoked... ruinous for the people of Japan, not just for my campaign!" she shuddered, pressing one hand to her forehead as though to perish the thought.
"So, I was thinking I should prepare myself. That Higashide-san... he always takes the low road and he'll take this one too. He will most certainly wield this hypothetical scenario against me! So I ask you, Libra, as my legal council: what steps can I take to get out in front of this? What sort of liability do I have, if the worst comes to worst? Does the law cover a case like mine, where an accidental misfire of my beam could, theoretically, reduce a tree to ashes?" she inquired, her tongue making a smoking noise against her jaw as though to punctuate the point that her laser was capable of doing such a thing.

Pff, her tongue's out. Can see how that would cause some worry among other people. Why would this politician have her tongue out in the open? Is she okay? Does she lack common courtesy? Is her quirk just a very unnatural long tongue? So many questions would come out from the mere look of it. She makes no note of it...since ya know, appearances and all. Deguchi still thinks she's blind. Wonder if she'll fire out some random lazers right now...wait no that's bad. This is where she works, she can't just have her damaging the place. Even if it would make her laugh. Especially if she aimed at her. Especially if she shot at her arm. Or leg. Or anything really.
"Don't worry, I'm just going through the process. No need to worry." She politely tells her. "I just needed you to say it for the record. I hope you understand." A rally in her mind isn't a good way to build up a platform for a defense. Since a lot of people over there were asking Deguchi and she was acting nervous, that meant someone can use that event against her. It's more of a hassle to deal with outside factors. She goes on on some tangent, with her feeling a bit embarrassed from the whole incident. She can't blame her. But seriously, she's supposed to be building a defense, so this chick has to get to the point and stop waltzing around the issue. "Deguchi, please. There's no shame in discussing it here." She remarks, somewhat annoyed but still keeping a respectful tone. "That's why you're here, to prevent incidents like that burning down to happen. Or, if it does happen again, we can deal with it."
She opens up more about it, still not enough but enough for a basis (kinda). "Higashide...hmm. Truth be told, you gotta worry more about that than your platform. If any sort of inflammatory evidence pops up, you won't even get the chance to even speak out. Some small remarks grown into full blown controversies, rumors of burning other places…" She began to mutter to herself, leaving Deguchi hanging for a moment. After a while she adjusts her glasses and faces forward. "I believe there are cases with accidental arson we can use for our first line of defense. What you need to worry though is what he will do. If he's as low as you claim him to be, even with a good defense he'll try to run your name down on the ground. It happens a lot. A previous arson case ended with the defendants favor, but the accuser managed to cause them to go bankrupt over some minor law...I can get that case if you want...but I don't think that's really need."
She lowers her quirk usage so she can barely see, reducing the afflicted gray patches under his eyes until its barely visible, enough to be passed off as baggy eyes. Her eyes aren't even vibrant bright red, they're just dim enough to pass off as her usual blind state. Her vision is a lot more blurry, though. She takes off her glasses and smiles at Deguchi. "Sounds to me this isn't as much as a law problem, but a confidence problem. Am I wrong for assuming that? You're afraid of not arson, but the mere fact that you'll do it in public, during a meeting of sorts.”

If she was being honest, Deguchi had expected a much more kid-gloves approach from Libra, hoping they'd share a few good-natured chuckles at the expense of how desperate her opponents must be to trump up an arson conspiracy against her. This wasn't quite that. Libra basically stressed that this single case would be easy enough to get over, even if they had to fall back on calling it an incident on her behalf, but that the difficult part might be if Higashide or others worked to pin it on her as deliberate. Beyond that, Libra correctly guessed that this might not be a one-off; it was not as if there was much keeping Deguchi from burning things down all the time, given her erratic quirk. "What is she, my lawyer or my therapist?" Deguchi thought to herself, feeling her mood sour now that they were discussing one of her least favorite topics that could possibly be discussed.
Not letting it show on her face, she kept her eerie smile and rubbed her hands together meekly. "That's an issue I've had to live with for a long time, of course. Typically circumstances aren't as dire as you might imagine, but it's true: I ordinarily try to arrange things in my favor to avoid that kind of scenario. I hold rallies or debates outside. I don't ask to be invited in places. I- usually- avoid any place with conditions that might cause me to sneeze, like, say, a park full of various flowers and blooming seasonal foliage," she rattled off; the last bullet point was especially relevant, since that was essentially what had gotten her into this mess. "As long as I'm not eating something peppery or suffering from a cold, I can typically keep it under control."
Sighing, she adjusted her tie and leaned back in her chair, seeming increasingly weary despite all the coffee. "Of course, it's an obstacle in my daily life, and one that will be inflated even further by my opponent. That's why it's ideal that this not be put on me. If people think I'm going to burn down the Diet building- or even just the mayor's office in Komae- with a sneeze they're not going to believe my message about the positive effect of quirks in Japanese communities, let alone vote me into office..." As if to demonstrate the severity of the issue, she was briefly forced to let her tongue hang out again, creating a hot crackling noise of laser-tongue on metal. "So yeah, I'm worried about what might happen in the future, but to be honest, I'm a lot more concerned about how that bastard can speculate to make the present sound worse than it is."
Deguchi rested her head on her hand and leaned on one arm of the chair, her smile momentarily dropping to make a face that looked more like the one she'd often worn as a thug, fed up with adults, school, society, and everything else that her rebellious heart rebelled against. "Oh, here's another fun addition, not sure if you've read up on my history anywhere yet: I used to be in a street gang. The Ssss-" she began, then clicked her tongue irritably, shooting off an almost imperceptible red beam as she did, "-Striped Snakes. We weren't big time. Ordinarily nobody would remember, but this sort of thing comes back on a person running for office," she grumbled. She stared at the ceiling for a moment, then turned her beady, bright-red eyes towards Libra. "I pretty much resigned myself to play it straight and honest on that one and tell people the real events where one of my street brawls ended up becoming the catalyst that turned me to social service. What do you think? How would you approach it?"
She leaned further back in the chair, showing the underside of her angular metal jaw and staring at the ceiling. "Oh, before you ask, his history's clean as a whistle... I checked. Besides anti-quirker activism during his university days which is like... a positive, for the constituent base he's courting," she pointed out, rolling her hand as she spoke. Her contempt for the guy, on both a personal level and as he stood in her way as an obstacle, was obvious.

The past can haunt you. Not Libra's past, though.
...Well, no. Libra's past is super easy to be able to haunt. Murderer and all. Killed someone in college, kinda easy to haunt back at her.
No, the real past that can't even haunt her was Pyra Tachibana's. What kind of event other than the blinding (which truth be told she still can't recall the fuck happened, all she remembers is one day, blam! On a hospital bed, blind as hell) can come back and ruin her reputation? Nothing. She lived a normal life. She had normal parents, normal extended members she got along with, normal friends...so what the hell happened with her? What made Tachibana...Libra? Pff, who fucking knows. Who cares, anyway? It's all in the past, man! Worry about the future and the now! Who cares about what you were as a normal law abiding person and instead set your gaze on the bloody limbless melting future! Carpe diem or something, who the fuck remembers what the exact phrase was.
Deguchi meanwhile is the kind of person who would annoy the hell out of Libra. And truth be told it is annoying her. But...what is it about this mess of a political figure that is endearing? Is that the way she can win this? Who knows. She is knowledgeable in the field of law and figures. Political stuff? EEeeeeeeeEEEEEEEEEEEeeeeH she guuuuueeeessssesssssss? She just messes with her glasses as Deguchi talks about her worries. She super didn't expect this, but she's here as a client. They're not friends. What is she gonna do, lean on her shoulder and give her respite? God, no. "Debilitating effects of one's quirk...and yet you keep pushing forward on your pro-quirk platform. Interesting. Could be used in your favor if you spin it around." She slightly faces the direction of the origin of the noise emitting from her unrolled tongue. "Is that...hmm. Cool." She bluntly states, like a part of Libra just went through undetected. She shakes her head and slightly smiles. That can be a nice party trick. "He might go on about how you would burn down the podium you two are debating on, or on any desk…" She simply states matter-of-factly.
Then she started to talk about her past. God, what is she? Her therapist? She didn't sign up for this. "A gang...interesting. There are some Diet members with rumored connections to organizations, but a low time gang...didn't know that." This gang of theirs, the striped snakes. First off: alliteration. Cute. Not good for a low time gang, no wonder they failed to make it big. Second thing is the fact they used Snakes instead of Serpents. Serpents sound more mythical, more dangerous, more appealing. Come on now. Third thing...did she like, choke people with her tongue, or shoot lazers at them? She's interested in this now. If she were in Libra Mode, she would be asking more about her past as she's searing Deguchi's arm off with her acid.
"...I think that's a good move. Play up your past. Maybe downplay any potential severe criminal actions, but acknowledge them. Just...accept it." She's slipping out of lawyer mode as she slightly leans back on her chair, waving her glasses in the air. "Who cares? It's in the past. He can dig up all this horrible dirt on you, and if you ever decide to play his game, you can too. But unless you two managed to, I dunno, killed a lot of people, it won't matter in the end. Those people in the rally? They were focusing on the most recent event. People are fickle like that: All about the present. You got to work with that. Make your current image based off the you that you are in...in the present. Ya get me? We can handle the cases and such, but if you keep like, thinking about the striped serpa-snakes or your quirk's effects...that's gonna affect your speeches and stuff. Speaking as someone observing, right now."
She then sighs. "Sorry about that. Usually I don't get this worked up on the job." She then moves her hand on top of the files and collects. "Anyway. These copies are of arson cases shown to the public. You can look at them if you want." She then places her glasses back on. "...What kind of stuff did your group do, actually?"

If Deguchi and Libra had been able to really ponder their comparitive situations- one, a blossoming politician haunted by small-time crimes from the past and the other, a recent murderer holding a respected profession as a legal representative- surely, they would realize the irony therein. Of course, any amusement at the irony would be faint, compared to how Deguchi would react to the context itself. Instead, her mind was all on her own past misdeeds.
If Libra was inwardly critical or Deguchi's career as a gang member / civil servant / political hopeful, Deguchi found herself somewhat irritated with Libra's demeanor as well. Wasn't an attorney supposed to be all smiles and pleasantries, like she herself affected as a civil servant? Then again, maybe she had thrown that out the window herself when she started slouching in her chair and showing her exhaustion.
"I guess I'll just stay the course. It's all uphill, though," she sighed again, pinching the knot between her brows with two fingers as though she was staving off a building headache. "I don't think he killed anybody. I didn't either, just injured a lot. A lot." She had repeated the statement, but any amount of emphasis probably would have just sounded quaint to Libra, to whom injury was just the build to a deadly climax. "Besmirching his character is going to be difficult, at least unless people reject his anti-quirker sentiments more than polling indicates they will. Hopefully I can win on policies instead..."
She grabbed the folders and began to flip through them, making an effort to study, like a student who can't stand the coursework but knows they can't afford to fail the test. Perhaps out of curiosity, or perhaps to better serve, Libra asked about her past. There were parts of it that would make her smile, but right now, with the election hanging over her head, they didn't evoke any good feelings. "Keh heh heh... we were a wild bunch alright. It started as a bunch of kids habitually truant, but of course, when you skip school that often, you find ways to amuse yourself..."
Deguchi began counting off her fingers while her tongue hung out her mouth, sizzling. "Lessseee... we did a lotta vandalism. That's the easiest one, of course, especially when your tongue shoots lasers. Stuff like blowing up fire hydrants or melting water sockets or shooting down traffic lights. Breaking vending machines for soda and parking meters for change. The whole world is a shooting gallery for a bad girl with a quirk like that," she smirked, spreading her arms to either side as though inviting judgment. "As a kid, it was a victimless crime. Just something to blow off steam."
"Once that got old the gang decided we wanted to start throwing our weight around, espessssshially since there were other gangs of jackasses in Komae looking down on us. So we started, you know, just picking fights wherever we could. We'd beat people up for looking at us funny, shake 'em down too if we wanted the cash. Usually other gangs, sometimes just unfortunate folks that didn't deserve it," she murmured repentantly.
"Anyway, it kept spiraling. I found myself targeted by another gang leader, part of a gang called the Gold Grip. I always thought Golden woulda been better, but what do I know? Our gangs clashed all the time, until finally, their leader jumped me. The two of us tussled, he got me in a stranglehold, and blam, just like that, my laser half-killed both of us," she exclaimed, pointing at her jaw for emphasis. "That was the end of my wild youth and almost the end of my life as well. If some good citizen hadn't seen me bleeding out there and alerted the EMTs, I'd be dead."
As if remembering them, Deguchi turned her eyes back down to the papers and thumbed through them more hurriedly. As she did, a strange burn mark on the corner of one caught her eye. Had she done that? Perhaps a miniature laser had slipped out during her reminiscence... but that was unlikely. Maybe it only made sense for an arson photo to have a burnt corner?
Dismissing the thought, Deguchi tried to turn the discussion back to her campaign. "Yeah, this is the kind of stuff I used to see in my nightmares, when I worried about burning down my school building, back when my quirk started coming in," she admitted. "That said, that does make me wonder if this could just be treated as uh, the ssssss-" she hissed, then rolled her tongue back in with some annoyance. "-same as when you burn your kitchen making French fries in some kind of grease fire. It's not really arson, right? Or does it fit the definition since it's public property?" she pondered, rubbing her metallic chin thoughtfully.
Puffing up her chest with a point to make, Deguchi sat up and entered speech mode. "This is why we need the government to incentivize and sponsor quirk-related drugs and pharmaceuticals! Something like a quirk repressor or more effective allergy medicines, could have prevented this whole situation! Unfortunately, the government is too focused on gearing up to shoot quirkers on sight or capture them as test subjects to focus on humane projects with benefits for quirkers and citizens alike!" she railed. Unfortunately, with context, it came off as a more self-centered message than she had wanted it to be.

Ah, youth. How it can be both fun and dumb to think about your life as it slips by the seams. To look at what can be considered great and fantastic choices and look at them with a new look on life and realzie just how stupid it really was, or for how great it was when you didn't have to worry about adult responsiblities or the law or if killing is moral or not. It's just you and the world...such a good way to think about it, huh? To be young and walking around wiht your friends, to be sitting in that bed laughing with people, to be sitting in a bathtub melting yourself with your own acid and slowing regrowing the melted off skin, maniacally chuckling quietly nonstop. Oh, youth.
Just hearing about the escapades of this woman's gang seems to worth the whole awkward vibe she's emitting. Man, what a bunch of rookies. Just normal arson and vandalism...ah, well, she can't really judge, she herself had a bit of a vandalism back in her college days. You know the usual, just lightly applying her acid hands upon trees and bushes and walls and people's stomachs and chests and mouths and- ah well that few last things aren't really what one would consider to be vandalism, but hey. You live and learn with that info. Gangs aren't her thing, ya know. Maybe at times she'll hang out with some others and do shit their way, but she just likes to walk around the alleys and just kill em right there right then. Why have a plan? There's no grand thing about killing, it's just killing. People being weirdly deluded about it having some deep meaning behind it. It's just killing for killing's sakes. It's good. It's fun. It's her hobby that she enjoys.
When she mentioned the incident, Tachibana rose her hand over her mouth, in a state of shock. That...that must have hurt. Wow. To nearly die by own's own quirk, and to live through with heavy altercation to your body and self...it sounds so difficult to live through. "Wo-wow...it-it must have been a struggle to recover from that...I'm really sorry to hear that." As she's still supposed to fully blind, she makes no note of her small study over the files given to her.
Mentally, Libra is laughing, grinning ear to ear as she recalls all the times her quirk badly harmed her body. Man, she's liking this chick already, it was a good decision to take up this offer as her lawyer. So her lasers CAN hurt people, oooh boy this is fun. Man now she's jealous, she wants lasers as well. She wants to show people with weird looking lasers through their mouths. Hell, maybe she might subject herself to some of that action as well. The possibilities are endless with lasers! Hell, she could recreate those incidents with ease!
She lets out a small smile as Deguchi went on another promotional speech of sorts. This could be fun to help out. Plus...quirk suppressor might be neat to hold onto. Maybe, dunno, jab it into people if theyre resisting too much. "That's...actually a nice idea! Not like, removing it completely, of course. Just the mere idea of limiting it for medical purposes would be an interesting angle to take it into. Might cause some murmurs and could label you by negative sites as someone who wants to remove quirks altogether, but it's an interesting thing to support. Tons of people get hurt by their quirks, why not help them out a bit? You're onto something."

"Ha ha, thank you. There is no good way to get a prosthetic like this, is there?" Deguchu joked, rapping one fist on her own metal chin. "But again, I owe it all to the fine, upstanding folks of Japan, who cared for me more than I myself did. Without that token kindness, recovery would have been impossible," she pointed out again. It was part politeness, part core of her message of civic responsibility that thereby needed to be repeated whenever possible.
She nodded along with Libra, never suspecting her devious inner monologue. "Right? I would never suggest anything so barbaric as trying to remove a quirk, just something to help those of us with less convenient ones not be so much at their mercy. I'm sure there are others out there with even more unruly mutations," she sighed, though one had to doubt quirks got much more self-harmful than her own. It was also possible she was thinking how a quirk suppressant could help law enforcement officials fend off quirked criminals... but that sort of bullet point was not in-line with her pro-quirk, small military message, so she left it unspoken.
"Well, let me think on this accidental fire some more. If I think of it like an accident, it doesn't seem so bad. More like... a potential fine to be paid than any kind of scandal," Deguchi sighed, kicking her leg again. "Walking down memory lane always makes it hard for me to put myself back in the mindset for being a politician, and yet, I do it so often. Those formative years, you know?"
Idly, staring at the woman across from her, Deguchi made small talk as her thoughts stewed. "How about you? What sort of past drives you to be a lawyer? I'd imagine you have to have a sense of..." She had started to say justice, but that was a bit corny. After all, justice was the role of the judge and jury, not the attorney. "Hmmm... reliability. It takes self-confidence, I bet! And the ability to compartmentalize," she proposed. "Not so different from the life of a bureaucrat, really." After all, a lawyer had to be able to live with certain harsh feelings, such as doubt towards their clients or anger towards their opponents. "How'd you decide that was what you'd do. Was it just the money?" she joked, wearing a big, crap-eating grin that would make the joke obvious to people with sight but would theoretically be hidden from a blind person.

yada yada, token kindness, yada yada, impossible. She's heard it all before. She can't see shit normally, it's all thanks to her quirk that she can even turn on and off her afflcition. And even that comes with a massive drawback as she sets all of her senses to the max. High sensitivity is a bitch, sometimes...but man does that feeling feels great. The feeling of intense pain. Wonder how burning a complete hole through her jaw would feel like. Hell, probably. Torture most likely. Wonderful times would occur during that as her healing factor slowly works its horrible magic. Wonder if this gal would benefit from that: A healing factor. Would remove that jaw of hers.
"Accident might work. Get the proper paperwork to defend yourself, get some public recognition in the park department, and you might get yourself a nice shield from anyone trying to target you through it." She places her glasses back on her face as Deguchi apologizes for her small past deluding. "It's alright. Its better to know this before than later down the line if push comes to shove. Having this out in the open helps potential cases down the line." She gives off a small smile at her.
That grin of hers mentally makes her laugh a bit. Oh, the benefits of having a quirk to turn on her sight. It's nice to trick people. Is she having fun trying to bring up serious heavy handed questions to her? Kinda cool. She can respect that hustle. "Hmmmmm...I guess its...well, it's a bit cliche." She nods her head side to side, thinking on how to not make this sound childish. "I just wanted to make a difference. Be involved. Somewhat selfish, but hey."

"Hm, that's not a bad idea. I was planning a few donations... not that I have money to do much in that department," Deguchi shrugged, still kicking her foot up and down. "Maybe putting in some face time with parks and recreation wouldn't be a bad idea either." She thought about adding that putting in face time sometimes backfired on her... but if she couldn't be personable for that goal, she'd have a hard time making it far in the political realm. The difficulty of making people buy in, given her strange appearance, was just another hurtle she had to get over.
The civil servant sat back in her seat and folded her hands; Libra's answer hadn't given her too much to think about. That seemed to be the point, though whether Libra had something hidden away and didn't want to make a distraction out of it, or perhaps it was personal, Deguchi couln't say. Of course, not everyone blows their jaw off in some street fight and gets rescued by the kindness of strangers; Libra might really have just wanted to be a laywer to help people, like she said. Or maybe she was just some crazy mass murderer who gets off on moonlighting as a defense attorney?
Whatever the case, Libra and Deguchi would spend another half an hour or so going over some of the less interesting parts related to preparing a defense against a hypothetical arson charge. By the time it was over, Deguchi felt more reassured in her ability to fight back any accusation through thorough prep-work, coming out in front of it, and framing it as an accident for which reparations had already been made. "And, key phrases to avoid... 'potentially greater damage'... 'all things considered, we were fortunate'... I think that covers it!" she resolved, shutting her notepad and sticking it inside her jacket's inside pocket, just behind her handkerchief. "You've been a great help," she finished, rising back up to her feet and extending her hand for a handshake. Deguchi thought about telling Libra that she was one of Japan's finest citizens, but it didn't seem like Libra liked political platitudes like that and preferred the informal touch. "Hopefully, I can return the favor some day."

She just wanted to make a difference.
Here's a weird paradox to consider. Take for consideration a person who likes the law. Now think about someone who kills for fun and for utterly no reason. And now combine the two into one person. it doesn't make sense. Logically, and let's be frank, very realistically would include the very important penalty for...uh dunno, killing someone? A bit minor to consider, but yeah, a pro tip to consider when making laws and legislations: murder is bad. It's really, really bad. You got a lot of details to consider like the type of murder, the weapon or lack therefore of, the victim, the assailant, the mental state of the murderer, how to make them seem innocent enough to get them off the hook (really hard in japan, thanks 'guilty until proven innocent') and a lot more stuff...stuff one can enjoy performing and dealing with.. While killing is messy, gross, fantastic, lets you jab your fingers up their throat, melt their insides...man. All those complications and more is why killing is a fantastic hobby of sorts. See what's off about this? You can't be an avid law follower and serial killer at the same time. Logically, its not feasible.
But see, it makes sense for dear old Tachibana. Listen, it's a very feasible concept: She wants to do her best in law, while also killing people and enjoying her entire body and mind slowly rot away and regrow itself over the span of the killing. Simple, right?
All this talk about legal issues and small details? It's great! She loves stuff like this! She also likes killing people. How hard is that to get? It's why you label stuff work and hobbies and other labels. You get to compartmentalize stuff very easily. It's also a bit of a hassle when those two fields get close to one another. Very rarely does she herself get a case involving murder but man...is that stuff good for the brain. She basically has to contain her glee and force her body to not transform just by thinking about it. But that's the fun of it! It's not a hassle, just an extra step to consider.
Deguchi seems like a nice person to meet in the middle of a alleyway, sneak up behind, and blind them until their eyes and flesh are gone. Nothing personal. But ya know what? She's gonna help her for a while. As previously stated, it might be fun to hang with a politican and see how either they mess up or succeed. Maybe she won't kill her after the congratulatory victory party? Who knows! As she compliments her, she stands up to give out an handshake. "...Uh. Are you doing something?" She narrows her eyes behind the shades before she smirks. "Let me guess...a...uuh...handshake?" She holds out her hand to return it, although as a small joke she stretches out her hand far out to the left of Deguchi's. "Just let me help out and we'll call it even. Like I said, I like making a difference. Maybe this will be a big one." She smiles again. Deguchi and her lawyer Tachibana...nice ring.

Deguchi felt like slapping herself on the forehead once she realized she had been expecting a blind person to pick up on a handshake. She should have gone for the double-handed mayor handshake she often performed. What a gaff!
Thankfully, it seemed Libra was taking it in stride; she made up for her earlier blunder by grabbing the hand now and shaking vigorously. "Thank you again for working pro-bono today. You're a little like the helpful citizen from my story! An altruistic force where none is obligated, really. It seems I owe the citizens of Japan another great debt," she chuckled, almost like it was her strange idea of a catch phrase. Going around indebting yourself to Japanese strangers all the time would be a pretty exhausting way to live.
With handshakes extended and farewells given, Deguchi left Libra's office. For Deguchi, her mayoral candidacy was the only thought on her mind... fun and hobbies had to be pushed to the wayside. She was the type, however, who was so passionate that her work became fun (well, when it wasn't about fending off arson charges). Libra, on the other hand, had perfected the work/life balance even further and thoroughly enjoyed both sides of her paradoxical lifestyle. Perhaps once this was all over, Deguchi could find a hobby of her own, though one would have to hope it wouldn't involve murder.
