NO OFFENSE, WE'RE JUST HUNGRY. LOCKED CABINETS. THE TWINS HAD PADDED INTO THE KITCHEN and found locked cabinets. Locked refrigerator. And they were hungry. So the two verdant twins ventured into the living room where their skull-headed guardian was watching some colorless show. They liked t.v., but there were more pressing matters at hand. "Zuuuuuu," Suzume rasped, her cry like a single note upon a violin. It was their name for Zugai when he wasn't patched-in to their telepathic conversations-- a single syllable. Sometimes, if they were feeling endearing, they'd even use "Zuzu". When the skull-headed man pried his attention from the screen, the twins pantomimed to him. Their four fingers on the right hand were clasped against the right thumb, as if pinching something. Then the twins used their clasped hands to gesture at their mouth. Hungry. "Alright. Go sit at the table." In Zugai's house, you ate at the table. He'd tried to introduce forks a number of times, to no avail. They crouched in their seats and ate with their hands. But it was progress. The twins did as they were told. They sat at the table while Zugai roused himself from the chair and went into the kitchen. There was a muffled series of beeps, followed by one slightly longer beep. Moments later, Zugai emerged with two rotisserie chickens. "What do we do before we eat?" The twins did the meaningless gesture of touching their forehead, touching each of their shoulders, and clasping their hands. The chicken was deposited in front of them. The same exchange persisted until, six rotisserie chickens later, Zugai's response changed. "We're out of chicken. I'll get some more at the store tomorrow." The twins wavered. "Zuuuu," Ayame complained. "Zuzuuuu," Suzume chimed-in. "You ate all the chicken. You have to wait until tomorrow." The twins scowled. They were still hungry, and Zugai wasn't feeding them. They exchanged a conspiratorial glance, and walked quietly from the room. If Zugai were to grow suspicious of the silence, and venture to the twins' bedroom, he'd find their abode empty. And if he went into the kitchen, he would find two knives missing from his knife block. If Zugai wouldn't feed them, they'd feed themselves, in the way that they always had fed themselves. ○●○●○ The two wandered the streets barefooted, each with an identical ankle monitor glinting in the moonlight. The air was cool, their breath coming out in puffs. Each twin wore a flannel shirt, rolled at the elbows, which they swam in, and black stretch jeggings. Their ropey hair hung freely. What would the evening hold? An unsuspecting passerby? A wayward pet? Anything was free game, unless it was gifted like them. And then there was the fabled "store" where the fabled rotisserie chickens were kept. Finding the store works be like hitting the jackpot. They could get all the rotisserie chicken that they wanted, wherever they wanted, and they wouldn't need Zugai to retrieve them. They'd walked down this street a few times, now. What they'd learned is that it had little traffic. No lights lit the windows, which meant the were few residents. Fewer witnesses. Now they just needed a target. There. Ayame hissed psychically to her sister. Suzume marginally lifted her head. A figure. Another girl. Too easy. Suzume wrapped her arms around her sister's arm. You silence, I stab? Suzume always wanted to stab. Okay. They would walk past the other girl, gazes calculating. Ayame would turn, sliding her arm free of Suzume's grasp, and grab at the other girl's hair, trying to constrict a hand over her mouth. Suzume, all the while, would free the butcher knife from the waistband of her jeggings. She'd go for the throat, if everything went according to plan. That was the quickest and easiest way to fell an unsuspecting victim. That is, if anything ever went according to plan. | 642 words tl,dr: the twins will singlehadedly cause the price of rotisserie chicken to go up, or commit a murder in the process |

[attr="class","goodbye"] NOTES Something's up here! It was rare that she’d be alone this late.
Sunaho had been lectured several times by Matsuda - a resident Dust Devil and veteran when it came to ‘street politics’ - on the dangers of being out so late on turf that wasn’t her own. He’d even gone as far as bringing up how dangerous it might be for an attractive young woman at this time of night. Sunaho, not being a child anymore and with no intention of being treated like one, didn’t listen to his advice.
True, it would’ve been easy enough for her to just stay in that empty lot the Dust Devils called home. There was only one thing that kept her foraying outside of their own ruled turf, but it was important enough to her to warrant the danger. It was, after all, her way of protecting a much more important part of herself than her own body.
Of course, another reason behind Sunaho’s disregard for Matsuda’s warnings was sheer confidence in her own ability to survive. The green-haired girl was hardly any stranger to a fight, and with her Quirk, felt she had a leg up against your average street thug. If she could survive gang wars with the Chinese and the Bosozoku, she could survive a late-night stroll.
Nonetheless, she did take some precautions to keep herself out of trouble. It would be inconvenient to get jumped be a group, after all. So Sunaho covered up her appearance somewhat, wearing cheap glasses that she’d knocked the lenses out of and a black cap to keep her visage obscured. Her hair was tied in a long ponytail, a different style than normal. With these alterations, she hoped none of her rivals would pick her out quickly…
Yet, there were deadlier predators in this concrete jungle.
Sunaho kept her eyes peeled as she wandered through the dim streets, taking the quietest route she could to get back to her home turf. There wasn’t another soul in sight, or so it seemed, but eventually her eyes did settle on an odd pair strolling toward her. Sickly green twins, arm-in-arm. What a strange sight…
Too strange for her liking.
Sunaho wasn’t one to judge others with odd appearances. But the sight of these two identical beings, this late at night, was so dreamlike that it immediately unsettled her.
Putting her hands in her pockets, she walked a little faster, trying to just get past them in case they were some kind of scouts. They looked young, so she hadn’t expected much from them… A folly she’d nearly pay for.
As soon as she passed the girls, Sunaho felt a firm grip on her hair, followed quickly by a hand over her mouth. Fuck! Her instincts were solid, and as the hand slipped over her mouth, her hair would turn into sand, slipping out of the grasp of the other girl as Sunaho’s legs took on their own sandy form. Slipping out of her shoes, she dashed rapidly away, gliding across the ground on sandy masses as she pivoted to face the twins, her stance low and hands in front of her.
Though she’d escaped their attack, the sting on the side of her neck, and warm dripping of blood let her know she’d almost been an unfortunate victim.
”Who the fuck are you with?” Sunaho snarled, grimacing towards them as she kept her stance low, like a cat ready to pounce. Her hands shifted into sand, shaped into grainy claws that were presented before her. ”One of the Yakuza groups? The Koreans? Not Bosozoku, they've got they wouldn't jump someone like this...” Questioning wasn’t likely to get her anywhere, but she hoped it would buy her time.
Her eyes scanned around, looking for others. Chances were, she was about to get jumped… Who the hell would send two girls to take her out? As her mind raced and her sandy form continued to flow, ready to strike, she finally spotted the two odd little bracelets that each of them had on their ankles. Were those…?
”What the hell…?” They looked a helluva lot like the kind of ankle bracelets a criminal on probation would wear… But, as far as Sunaho was aware, that shit didn’t fly on kids. Nor would any actual criminal be dumb enough to go out and commit murder with one on… Shit, what was this!?
”Hey... Why the hell do you have those?” Sunaho inquired sternly, her voice softening. Something was up here.
This was looking less simple by the second.

NO OFFENSE, WE'RE JUST HUNGRY. THEIR MOVEMENTS WERE PRACTICED AND QUICK. Jerk the ponytail. Cast the girl off-balance. Stay her with an earthy-scented hand over the mouth. Go for the throat. In the woods, they were much more efficient-- one needn’t worry about being overheard. Only the trees bore witness to the slaughter. The concrete jungle was different, and perhaps their newness to this habitat was to blame for their faux pas.
Hair turned to sand, the girl broke free as Suzume lunged. Just a glancing cut. Somewhere in the confusion, the girl kicked-off her shoes, borne away by sand. A frustrated hiss broke form Suzume’s lips. Ayame went to draw her blade. A handful of sand fell from her clenched fist. Where…?
Wait-! Ayame hissed.
Suzume had sunk onto her hands and the balls of her feet, one hand elevated to clasp the knife-- wild, bloodthirsty eyes turned to Ayame.
She's Gifted. Ayame warned, rubbing her hands together to disperse the last grains of sand. Look.
In a way, the Gifted were protected. They were more difficult to catch, and therefore less-often hunted. But they couldn’t very well let the girl go.
The other girl snarled, her stance low like Suzume’s. This refocused the girls' attention. The twins often made such noises, but to hear it from someone else was… well, comparable to meowing at one's pet cat. It warranted confusion.
Who were they with?
Matching amber glances were exchanged. Deeper confusion ensued, and was written plainly upon their faces. Well… it was pretty clear who they were with-- by who was physically present. Ayame pointed at her sister, being further back and less concerned with any immediate attacks. Ayame was with Suzume. No one else was there to be with.
Suzume remained crouched, showing no acknowledgement of the question. She swayed on her haunches, ready to spring. She held the tang of the blade to her lips, a black tongue lapping up the shed blood.
So what? Are we just gonna let her go?! Suzume's telepathic voice made no attempt to contain her thin annoyance.
Well, she is Gifted. Ayame folded her arms.
And it was a Gift that made it easy to get away, which meant a more difficult hunt. Which meant they’d be hungry longer. A powerless target would be easier, and they wouldn’t expend as much energy (hours after sundown, no less) trying to kill them.
Suzume whined.
The telepathic conversation was interrupted by the girl addressing the mute twins once again, asking about their ankle decorations. Suzume kept staring at the blue-haired girl, whose neck was still bleeding from the knick she’d received. Ayame sighed.
We’re finding someone else.
Suzume uncoiled from her crouched position, lowering her butcher’s knife. If Ayame determined that it was too much work to hunt the girl, she would listen.
But she’ll tell, Suzume insisted.
Maybe, Ayame agreed.
The girl gestured at their ankle decorations. Her voice was softer. Did she want the big plastic bracelets, too?
Put up your blade, Ayame told her sister.
Stupid! Suzume hissed, a growl coming from her throat, That’s stupid!
Just do it! Ayame flashed her teeth, hissing at her sister in low, dangerous tones.
Begrudgingly, Suzume complied.
Ayame also tucked her blade back into her waistband. Perhaps… the other girl could be reasoned with.
Ayame held her hands at eye-level, palms forward, to show that her hands were empty. She strode closer to the other girl, just not… too close. The sand was off-putting. Ayame pointed to the other girl, then drew that same finger to her lips. Then Ayame placed a hand over her chest, and pointed at the anklet. She pantomimed holding something in her hand, and extended the cupped hands towards the girl. All this, an elaborate charade, an attempt to say--
If the girl kept quiet, Ayame would trade her the anklet. The more intellectual twin had incorrectly assumed that the blue-hair girl wanted an ankle-monitor of her very own.
Ayame would wait a moment. And, if there was no reaction, repeat the charade again. Given their mutism, very few questions would likely be answered without patching the girl into the hivemind. And since they'd only just tried to kill the girl, they weren't eager to start speaking with her... not that the girl would allow them that close anyways.

[attr="class","goodbye"] WORD COUNT 000 TAGGED @tagged NOTES You can put notes and w/e else here. It will scroll so no worries about length~ There were all kinds of red flags going up.
Cliche as it might sound, Sunaho could tell these girls weren't inexperienced killers. They'd gone right for the throat; efficient, clean and quick. The green-haired woman hoped your average teenage girl would at least hesitate a bit before taking the life of another human being. Then again, they could be quite vicious, in her own schooling experience.
That aside, there was also the matter of their movements. 'Animalistic' would be a simple way to describe it. Everything about the girls was offputting to Sunaho, raising so many questions that all boiled to the conclusion that this was far more than your average hit.
It didn't help that they refused to say a single word.
Of course, it might be a bit hypocritical of Sunaho to say they were odd. Given that, at that point, both the prey and predator were facing off while taking stances like animals, ready to pounce, ready to fight and kill if need be. However, with Sunaho, her willingness for violence slowly diminished as she tried to pry some information from the girls.
Asking them who they were with was an empty question; Sunaho hadn't expected to get an honest response. All she had hoped for was a reaction that might clue her in as to who they were affiliated with. So their response - to simply point at each other - seemed like nothing more than a smart-ass reply. Then again, watching one of the twins lick that blood... Maybe they were just random killers, picking off whoever they found on the street. The kind of people it wasn't even worth trying to talk to.
That explanation wasn't compatible with what Sunaho noticed next, however.
What kind of murderer did it with an ankle bracelet on? It was one hell of a way to put yourself right at the scene of the crime.
Asking them about it was instinct; Sunaho immediately knew they had no reason to answer. At first, it didn't seem like they were going to answer. They just growled and hissed, disconcerting Sunaho even more. If these were just murderous psychos, as broad as the term was, maybe it didn't matter that they were being tracked. The woman was ready as ever for a fight, expecting little cooperation from the odd pair.
So it surprised her when one of the girls tucked the knife away, and presented her hands in a passive gesture.
"Go for that knife, I'll claw your face off." Sunaho responded quickly. This kind of thing could easily be a trap, she wasn't going to be the fool that fell for it. Keeping one of her hands shaped into a sandy claw, Sunaho stood up straighter to see what they were playing at. She was starting to wonder if, rather than being unwilling to speak, they were unable. Otherwise, you'd think they'd try a more direct method of communicating...
What they did 'communicate' didn't make much sense, however.
Pointing to Sunaho, then a shushing motion. "Keep quiet."
Gesturing to themselves, then to the anklet, and back to Sunaho. "We'll give you the bracelet."
"Why would I..." This wasn't making any sense. Why did they have those things on in the first place? If they knew what they did, why would they be out killing with them on? There was the chance they were somehow tricking the bracelets but in that case... If they were willing to just hand them over, why hadn't they removed the bracelets? It seemed there was an inescapable conclusion as Sunaho stood there silently, her face colored with confusion.
"Do you kids even know what those bracelets are?"
How couldn't they? Then again... the law couldn't exactly slap those on a pair of teenagers anyway, could they? So these bracelets... Probably weren't even legal. Someone, for some reason, had slapped these bracelets on the teens without telling them what they did. Why?.
None of this made any damn sense.
"Alright, I've got my own offer." Sunaho spoke up, furrowing a brow at the twins. It seemed they could understand her, even if they couldn't speak themselves. The green-haired woman, gave them a cold look, one hand still clawed, as she put forward her own suggestion.
"I won't snitch if you answer my questions. Nod for yes, shake your head for no. Grab a knife, and I drag you both to the nearest police station." An empty threat. Sunaho had little intention of getting the cops involved, but they wouldn't know that. If there were no objections, Sunaho would calmly and coolly ask a small handful of questions, giving a brief space for them to reply. Her voice was smooth, careful.
"Did someone else give you those bracelets?"
To make sure they weren't just some fashion statement.
"Was that person a police officer?"
To make sure they really were illegal, if they'd answered yes to the previous statement.
"Did that person tell you that those bracelets track your location?"
This one, she already had figured the answer for.
There was no way in hell they knew. If they did, they either wouldn't be giving those bracelets up now... Or would have already removed them.
Sunaho hadn't lost sight of the fact these girls had tried to take her life.
Even then, she wasn't about to let this shit go unanswered.
Something was up here, and Sunaho had a feeling there was someone else involved.

NO OFFENSE, WE'RE JUST HUNGRY. WHEN THE OTHER GIRL THREATENED THEM, a laugh burbled out of Ayame, a lyrical and disconcerting thing. How could she claw their faces off without any claws? Her answer came in the form of a silty dagger that arced from the other girl's hand. Ayame was right to assume that she was not worth hunting. Her gift with Sand allowed her to shape it however she wanted-- with such an unpredictable weapon, the psychics were at a clear disadvantage.
She asked a question-- did they know what the anklets were? Though they didn't, Ayame nodded. Suzume, who'd been watching her sister, also nodded, though a few seconds later. They'd learned about nodding and shaking heads from Zugai. So when the woman offered to forget about them for nothing more than a few answers, the twins exchanged a glance, before both nodding their heads. Answering questions without touching knives seemed straightforward enough. And it meant they could resume their hunt without interruptions.
Did someone give them those bracelets?
Thunder did.
The twins nodded in stereo.
Was the person a police officer?
They'd been taught about police-- about how they looked, and about how they locked girls like Ayame and Suzume in small, dark boxes, and never let them out. Police were bad. Thunder, and his friends, did not like police.
They shook their heads. No, Thunder was not police.
The last question… elicited no response. Largely because neither twin had a grasp of what it meant to track one's location. They exchanged a glance.
If we don't say anything, she'll tell, Suzume insisted.
Can we not know?
Suzume shrugged.
Ayame turned, and shouldered a shrug. They didn't know what the anklets did. Thunder had put them on, and said that it would protect them. That people would see the anklets and know they were in his protection.
This was, of course, a bold-faced lie of which neither teen was aware.
The bracelets were asset protection, plain and simple.
And if Zugai had been aware that his two wards were cavorting about town with kitchen knives, rather than relaxing at home, surely the bracelets would already be signaling for reinforcements.
The twins stood a moment, awaiting further questioning. But when none came, Ayame bent quickly at the waist-- or at least, as far as the knife in her waistband would allow. Suzume followed suit. It was a polite bow, as if the two were dismissing themselves from a formal meeting-- another gesture Zugai had taught them. And when they righted themselves, they peered at the other girl inquiringly.
Did she have any other questions? Or were they free to continue their hunt?

[attr="class","goodbye"] WORD COUNT 000 TAGGED @tagged NOTES You can put notes and w/e else here. It will scroll so no worries about length~ A thought crossed Sunaho's mind as she stood there, questioning her would-be killers.
What the hell am I doing?
The practical thing to do, after someone tries to slice your throat open, is either get the hell away or put them down so they don't come after you again. Right now, she was doing neither of those things. Like some kind of amateur, she was trying to get an answer from them. Hell, she was trying to leverage out some answers using the only actual advantage she had. It was stupid and reckless.
But what other choice did she have?
The first question was the simplest one. Did someone else give them those bracelets? Had the answer been no, and they had willingly slapped them on, Sunaho would've been more likely to just vacate the premises as quickly as she could. However, as was to be expected, the bracelets weren't just some weird fashion statement.
Fair enough. It didn't hurt to check.
The second question was about getting to the core of the issue. Sunaho's eyes narrowed at them, brows furrowing as they both shook their heads and answered "No, it wasn't police that put them on us."
Shit.
Almost wincing at the confirmation of her theory, Sunaho quickly found herself coming to the most likely conclusions. She was no fan of cops, but at least if they'd slapped on the ankle bracelets, Sunaho could be fairly sure there was a decent reason for it. Instead, it was an undoubtedly criminal element that wanted to know these girls' whereabouts at all times.
The last question was to gauge their relationship with this criminal entity.
Unfortunately, the answer was inconclusive, with both twins shrugging. Sighing in frustration, Sunaho glared into them. "Did you not understand the damn question or something?" It was pretty straightforward, she thought... Though...
It wasn't like they'd shown themselves to be any degree of normal thus far.
A few moments passed as Sunaho stood silent, trying to figure out what to do. At this point, she was past trying to justify her actions; whatever was happening, she was doing something about it. If there was some creep putting ankle bracelets on teenage girls, she'd find out about it. She spotted the twins bowing, and quickly raised a hand in their direction, signaling them to stop as she stepped forward.
"Hold up. Let me try that last one again."
Gone was the savagery she'd initially met these twins with; an instinct to survive replaced with an unchecked curiosity. Sunaho took on a somewhat guarded stance as she looked to them both. "Also, I'll say when you can leave." The content of her speech was cold, but her tone was matter-of-fact. Her threats were empty, and she had become aware that the twins weren't likely to catch onto it.
Pausing a moment to make sure they didn't make a run for it, Sunaho spoke up again, trying to approach these simply girls with a simple manner of speaking. "Those bracelets... If you wear them, it lets whoever put them on you know where you are at all times. Am I clear?" She said, pointing harshly to the girls' feet. "You break 'em or remove 'em, and they'll get real fucking angry. Cause they wanna stalk you with those things. I don't know why." She looked to them with a grim expression, offering her final question once more.
"Did they tell you the same things I just told you?"

NO OFFENSE, WE'RE JUST HUNGRY. THEY WERE TURNING TO LEAVE WHEN THE GIRL SPOKE-UP AGAIN, trying to impede their hasty escape. What?! They had answered her questions. That meant they were done, right? That was the deal! The woman before them adopted a more authoritative tone, stating that she would tell them when they could leave. Ayame sighed as if she was being put-upon by the minutes that they spent standing there. Suzume flashed her syringe-like teeth. What gave this other girl the authority to boss them around?
She is keeping quiet for us, Ayame reminded her sister, her gaze cutting sideways as they seemed to gauge the bared teeth.
Fine, whatever, but if we don’t get food soon—
I know.
Ayame hooked her arm through her sister’s, mostly to hold her back lest her temper boil-over. She turned her burnt-orange gaze expectantly towards the woman before them.
As the girl explained the anklets, the fierce looks that the twins wore slackened. Ayame looked surprised, her brows climbing on her forehead, while Suzume maintained a look of annoyance, though… not directed at anyone in particular. Not at anyone present, anyways.
That’s how they found us, all those times, Ayame realized.
Every time we escaped… Suzume murmured.
They’d been wearing ankle monitors. That was how Thunder and company kept tabs on them, and always found them. It wasn’t because people had told them… it was the devices on their ankles.
Again, the woman asked her question. Had they already been told this?
The twins shook their heads.
No one had told them anything.
Which honestly, had been a trend ever since they’d been taken from the woods. They were forcibly removed, passed from one house to the next. Admittedly, Zugai’s house was much better, but… to think that their anklets had such dark implications.
Ayame looked at her feet, and at her sisters’, and the steadily-blinking devices that they wore. Honestly… anger didn’t seem like such a bad consequence. If they took the devices off, and made a break for it, neither Thunder nor his flunkies could exact their revenge, even if they wanted to. Suzume freed her arm from Ayame’s grasp, hunkering down on the ground. Suzume reached around her back for the butcher knife tucked into her waistband.
Zugai will probably get in trouble, though, Ayame remarked. Suzume paused, then looked up at her sister.
So?
He’s nice. Even if he doesn’t feed us enough.
Suzume let her hands fall, remaining squatted.
Ayame cast an uncertain look towards the lady, her brow stitching. She held both hands up, palms skyward, and wiggled them slightly—it was akin to a shrug, but more exaggerated. It was a question.
What could they do?
It was kind of silly to assume that the girl they'd just attacked with a knife would help them try to escape-- but if she was willing to tell them the function of an ankle monitor, was it really that much of a stretch to assume that she'd be willing to tell them how to get out of an ankle monitor?

[attr="class","goodbye"] WORD COUNT 000 TAGGED @tagged NOTES You can put notes and w/e else here. It will scroll so no worries about length~ Sunaho was pretty much making her plans on the spot.
She didn't really know how she was going to deal with these two kids, but she knew she had to. Leaving them be, letting them walk away, that just wasn't gonna happen. It was possible, physically at least. It just... Sunaho just couldn't take that route.
It was that simple.
The twins didn't exactly like it themselves, both making their annoyance more than clear enough to the green-haired woman. She didn't blame for feeling pissed off, and was ready to bare her clears again if it came to that.
It hopefully wouldn't come to that. She was just doing what she needed to do.
They seemed to understand her the second time, when it came to explaining those ankle bracelets. Keen eyes tried to gauge their response, and it became evident they weren't exactly happy with this usage. Good, that meant she could try and explain to them how to get out of this mess they were in... Even if Sunaho didn't have the first clue as to why they were in it in the first place.
With clear confirmation they'd been lied to about the ankle monitors, Sunaho was starting to hope that they too would see that they needed to do something. They were shackled as they were now, and Sunaho had a feeling they didn't like that anymore than she did.
Hell, they looked ready to break them. Wordlessly communicating between themselves, they were hunkered down and preparing to cut the things off. Sunaho almost stepped forward to stop them, but it looked like one managed to intervene with the other before anything could happen. Meanwhile, Sunaho was seeing quite clearly how they felt about this whole shitshow.
They were conflicted, confused. Angry. Maybe scared. They didn't know where to go, what to do. They were just kids, yet it must've felt like the world was either going to chain them or chase them.
Yeah... She knew what that was like.
They looked to her for guidance. For a fraction of a moment, Sunaho's mouth turned upwards, before glancing down with a furrowed brow at the ankle monitors.
"You gotta be careful. If you break them they'll know. If they know, they'll come for you. They'll go to the place where you broke them, and search from there." The green-haired woman explained, trying to keep itm. simple so they could understand. "I can probably break em for ya. But as soon as I do, you need to run and hide..." Her words trailed off a bit.
Run and hide?
Look at these two... They were out trying to kill people in the streets, looking like they'd just risen from the swamp.
Running and hiding weren't going to be so easy for them...
Sunaho spoke on without thinking.
"I can help you."
Her words lingered in the air. Pair of murderous kids who would've had her bleeding from the throat if she hadn't noticed them. Here she was, helping them escape... Something.
"I help you break them, and I can help you hide until it's safe. Otherwise, they might find you, and whoever put it on you won't be happy. They might hurt you, even."
Matsuda was going to call her an idiot for this, but she didn't particularly care. As Sunaho spoke on, she became more and more sure in her words.
So what, they'd tried to kill her? They were hardly the first. Besides, murderous street rats weren' nearly as bad as the kind of sick fuckers who'd slap ankle monitors on kids for their own purposes. There was more here, something bigger. Sunaho wasn't going to grind these kids into the dirt when there was some worse shit up above.
"That's my offer."
She took on a passive stance, shrugging lightly.
"Take it or leave it."

NO OFFENSE, WE'RE JUST HUNGRY. THE TWINS LISTENED WITH WIDE, unblinking eyes. They were, as always, silent. Their faces were slack as they listened to the woman’s explanation, spare the periodic twitching of a cheek muscle or stitching of a brow. Everything made so much more sense now-- that was how Thunder’s men found them.
If this was the forest, we could lose them, Suzume thought tersely.
Ayame sighed, lowering her gaze. That was true.
The woman before them offered to break the devices, and to help hide the two teens hide until everything blew over.
Still hungry, Ayame, Suzume thought with a huff.
Soon, was her sister’s terse response.
They’d have to figure out something else to eat.
Something that wasn’t their rescuer.
They uncoiled themselves, and Ayame nodded her head. Suzume glowered. The generosity of their target from only moments prior had done nothing to quell the gnawing hunger in her stomach. But if they could free themselves of Thunder, that would be very nice indeed.
We aren’t going back to Zugai? Suzume trailed.
Maybe not, Ayame remarked.
He might get in trouble. But it had always been Ayame and Suzume. What did they care, if regaining their freedom meant throwing their temporary caretaker under the bus? The twins stood expectantly, swaying faintly as they awaited the woman’s next move.

With little idea on what the hell they were thinking, Sunaho could only stand their and wait until they gave some kind of go-ahead. Which, with their limited speech, was a bit difficult. Fortunately, they did offer the closest thing they could to verbal consent to this plan of hers: The lack of any objection, and an impatient and expectant look towards her.
"Gonna assume you're taking it..."
The woman uttered lowly, stepping towards them cautiously. They didn't seem to really trust her or anything like that, so she didn't want to make them jumpy. "I can break those anklets off. If I break them the right way, they'll be off you, but still be telling people where the bracelets are. You follow?" Sunaho explained, moving close to the twins and kneeling down at their feet. It took a bit of trust on her end too, leaving herself this open.
"I'll break 'em now. Don't panic. Then, you follow me." Assuming they weren't going to suddenly start objecting to the whole idea, Sunaho would reach for the first one's leg. Ayame. Reaching for the band of the ankle monitor, one of her hands would take the shape of a sandy claw. A single, slender claw would reach into the gap between the band and Ayame's ankle, a sharp inward edge pressing against the band. With a harsh pull, Sunaho severed it quickly, cleanly. The violent speed and edge of her sand was stronger than any knife those twins had. She hoped they'd see that, and maybe be discouraged from attacking her.
Without a word, Sunaho would do the same for Suzume, using her unnaturally sharp claws of sand to cut that band too. For both of them, she'd pick up the ankle monitors, tucking them both into the back of her pants, covering them with her shirt and jacket.
"Now we trick them. Stick close, act as natural as you can." The green-haired woman would order, glancing around to make sure they were in the clear, before marching onward. She knew the streets well enough to execute this plan quickly and simply, she hoped. As the woman lead her would-be murderers through the city streets, she couldn't help but wonder still.
"You kids know how to write or anything? Would make gettin' answers from you a hell of a lot easier. Like who put those bracelets on you, and why... Any chance you even know the answers?" Sunaho would huff as she glanced back at them, not expecting much. Communicating without words wasn't easy, trying to get names wasn't something she hoped to turn out well.

NO OFFENSE, WE'RE JUST HUNGRY. THE BLUE-HAIRED WOMAN AS ONE MIGHT when approaching a feral cat, stepping lightly, speaking in smooth, reassuring tones. She explained that she could break the anklets now, but they would still tell Thunder’s people where the twins were. It was strange to think that something so inanimate could speak-- perhaps these anklets were gifted like the twins, though? Silently speaking to anyone who had the right resources to listen. The woman knelt. She was prone. Suzume gave a low growl, but Ayame clasped her sister’s wrist, warning her against the impulse to attack. They’d already seen her power-- even if Sunaho wasn’t looking at them, that didn’t mean that she wasn’t dangerous.
Sand moved around the other girl’s hand, forming a claw like those of a bear. The twins stiffened, their mouths opening to reveal jagged, syringe-like teeth. The motion was quick-- a flick, and then the anklet fell away. Any growing growl in the back of their throats was silenced. Sunaho is powerful, the twins realized. And in the city-- much like in the woods-- the most powerful were the most safe. Trusting her would benefit their well-being greatly.
They were far more complacent once Suzume was also free. They watched with tentative intrigue as Sunaho retrieved the monitors from the ground. Suzume wrapped her arm around Ayame’s, and the two only nodded when Sunaho told them what to do-- stick close, act natural.
They did precisely that-- trailing obediently behind their ex-dinner, now-rescuer.
Her questions were met by bobbling heads-- yes, they knew how to write-- yes, they knew who the bracelets were from, and they knew why. While Thunder was a guarded man who kept his thoughts close, his employees were not nearly so discerning. They knew how important they were to him. At least… from a strategic standpoint. On a personal level, they doubted that anyone was important to Thunder.
They knew all these things, but probably couldn’t write about them very easily. Their writing was still incredibly limited. Even drawing would be difficult. Besides, how would they write? With what?
Should we? Suzume asked, reaching towards the crown of her head.
Well… if we are going to follow her… it would be easier if she knew how to talk to us? Ayame proposed, You know, if she could hear us?
Suzume sought a mushroom from the crown of her head, pinching its stem before freeing it. Its mycelium flailed in search of a place to take root, barely perceptible in the din.
Suzume coughed, as if to clear her throat, trying to snag the attention of their rescuer. She would then hold-out the mushroom for Sunaho’s taking. Should the woman accept, the twins would pinch a phantom-mushroom in the air, as if holding ones of their own, and pantomime putting the imagined mushroom in their own ears.
If Sunaho complied with the absurd request, her ear might itch for a moment. And out of the solitude of her own mind, in the oppressive silence in her own ears, two, distinct voices would begin to make themselves known. She would be patched-in to the neural network that the twins shared.
If we can be found with the bracelets, why do we hold them still? Suzume asked her sister, her expression droll. Is that not dangerous to us?
To keep them, yes, but we are not to keep them, Ayame reassured her sister. She has a plan. She thinks of it. We hear this.
Perhaps the plan is to give us to someone else?
Who? We are useless to anyone else.
The twins would again turn their attention towards the woman who strode before them, looking for any sign that she had heard them, or had even wedged the mushroom in her ear int he first place.

Sunaho's head was filled with a hundred different guesses on what was up with these kids, and none of the possibilities were particularly nice. There was no doubting that they were from some kind of messed-up background. Taking swipes at strangers in the streets, walking around with ankle monitors on... Not to mention the generally 'feral' aura that seemed to surround them. Whether they'd grown up in some rough streets, the woods, as slaves or... Worse... Sunaho didn't know. All she knew was that, well...
They were kids.
It didn't matter what the story was. Just that some sick fucking freak had slapped ankle monitors on a pair of kids. That's all Sunaho needed to know to tear the damn things off, and try and find out who exactly she needed to tear apart.
Before she could rip into the sick bastard, she'd have to get her would-be killers to relative safely, and that also meant disposing of their monitors. Sunaho would lead them quickly, glancing back every now and thin to make sure they were right behind her and weren't trying anything. It seemed they were good at following orders if they were mutually beneficial.
Even though they seemed to be getting by at this point, Sunaho was still surprised by what she saw when one of them beckoned her to look their way. One of the girls was holding out a mushroom... Something related to their Quirk, it seemed. "Uh...?" Sunaho didn't really have any idea how to respond at first... Though, decided to trust them just a bit. After all, if something went wrong, she was quick enough to get the hell out of there.
Sunaho took the mushroom, but was a bit more hesitant when they gestured placing it in her ear.
"You're kidding me, right? What the hell..." The distrustful woman looked to them both, not detecting anything but sincerity in what they were suggesting. She stopped for a moment, thought it through. It looked like these girls wanted to get their freedom, and would cooperate if Sunaho helped them. So it made sense that they'd try and pitch in too, if this was somehow pitching in...
Furthermore, this was a trap, well... It would be an uncharacteristically silly one. These kids didn't seem smart, but judging by that move they'd pulled when they first went for Sunaho's throat... They knew how to hunt. This didn't look like the trap of a hunter.
"Ah, fuck it..."
If things went wrong, Sunaho would just slash their faces off. Doing it quickly before she could second-guess herself, Sunaho put the mushroom in her ear. It wasn't comfortable, but she hadn't exactly expected it to be. A moment of confusion and silence came, broken by a sudden voice that made everything click into place.
"Ahhh... That's why..."
Sunaho had heard of 'twin telepathy' as a joke before, but it seemed these two had the real thing. That explained why they didn't speak at all, even to each other. She was surprised for a moment, but in the age of Quirks, this wasn't too bizarre...
Finally hearing their voices, Sunaho would scoff at suggestions that she might give them to someone else. "I ain't got anything like that planned. Not my style. As for why I'm holding on to these..." Sunaho would reply as she looked further down the road. Right on schedule, the night bus pulled up next to a stop.
"If we just dropped them, then the people who gave them to you would know where it was you got rid of them. That would make it easier for them to hunt you down. So, we send them in the wrong direction. Buy you guys more time to cover your tracks. We'll leave the bracelets on the bus and get off at the 3rd stop. I'll cover the bus fare."
If they followed, Sunaho would do just as she had planned, stowing the bracelets in her jacket before approaching the bus. Leaving the bracelets on board would make it hard to tell where they'd gotten off. Chances were, the driver would notice them at the end of his shift. If the cops got alerted, and found out there were some unregistered bracelets going around... Well, if they could trace them back to the fucker who put them on the kids, Sunaho didn't mind.

NO OFFENSE, WE'RE JUST HUNGRY. THE TWINS CEASED THEIR TELEPATHIC CHATTERING when the woman they’d lunged at addressed them, regarding her with mirrored looks of blankness… and they both smiled in a sort of self-satisfied way. So she had accepted the mushroom. She spoke frankly, insisting that she had no intention of turning them over to someone else. Her thoughts reflected the same—which meant that she was telling the truth… or just really good at lying.
As the woman explained her rationale with keeping the anklets, the twins would listen closely, inclining their heads—that is, until the bus rolled around the corner. Suzume would crane her head towards the street, her mouth forming an excited little “o”.
Is that “the bus”?! Suzume exclaimed, We get to go on the bus?!
Ayame cast her sister a withering look, but her gaze would also find itself drawn away from Sunaho in the interest of surveying “the bus”. They had never been on a bus before…
Ayame did, however, manage to mostly-maintain her attention on Sunaho, and when the older woman finished explaining her plans, she nodded, albeit somewhat eagerly.
We like that plan! Ayame proclaimed.
And only partially because it involved riding on the bus. The bus in-question rolled to a stop at the curb, brakes hissing. The twins ebbed away from the sound, squinting their eyes at the hiss, but their excitement was almost tangible. They would dutifully follow behind Sunaho as their fares were paid, their eyes raking the interior of the bus.
Bright lights. Plastic seats. Metal armatures. It was totally foreign, and totally cool. Tired working people and even homeless people occupied only a smattering of seats. The girls smiled toothlessly to one another. Once Sunaho paid their fairs, the twins would bobble excitedly along behind her.
Never been on a bus, Ayame remarked.
Been in a few cars, though, Suzume chimed-in.
The lights flickered off before the bus surged into motion. A confused and wordless murmur stretched between the twins. Unless prompted by Sunaho, neither would know to take a seat, or at the very least grab onto a pole for balance.

It was weird, finally being able to hear what these kids were saying, or rather. thinking. There was a sense of violation to the whole thing, but Sunaho was willing to put up with it for their sake. It meant they trusted her, and hearing their reactions made her trust them much, much more. That excitement on seeing the bus made Sunaho smile a bit, relieved to hear these kids acting childish. Meant that their trying to kill her maybe really was out of desperation... Their full story was something she wanted to find out, but that could wait. Their safety came first.
When the bus finally came around, Sunaho wasn't sure if the twins understood her plan fully, or just really wanted to board. Either way, it didn't matter. They wanted to ride the bus, after all. Their lack of knowledge on it made clear just how 'sheltered' these two were, and Sunaho didn't want to think too hard about the possible hardships they'd faced. All she could say for certain was that this was another sign of just how 'blind' they all were to real suffering. Those down in the dirt stayed there, after all.
With both twins looking awed and confused, and neither making much of an effort to stand, Sunaho would usher them along, after paying the fare for all three of them. "C'mon, sit down. At the back." Safest place to hide her disposal of the bracelets, she figured. Once they were all seated, it was just a matter of waiting for their stop... Giving Sunaho plenty of time to think about how silly her decisions tonight had been.
And also, how necessary.
"I want you girls to know, I ain't promising you all that much. What happens next is all up to you, but I'll do my best to do what I set out to." Keeping them safe may have been her ultimate goal, but it was clear they could fend for themselves. Instead, there was one thing she could at least guarantee the twins...
"We get rid of these bracelets, I give you some freedom. That's the trade... You want more of it, and I'll show ya what freedom I can bring."
