279 words A parade of visitors had sauntered through the mansion in the past week-and-a-half. Mostly men. A woman. The girls had broken-out, once. Met a girl their age. After that, security tightened. They could never get an unsupervised moment. Even when they were sleeping, a maidservant was in the room. They came in shifts, never sleeping.
The only place of respite was the garden, full of trees and flowers and artificial sunlight. The twins lay side-by-side in the grass, their eyes closed, hands resting upon their stomachs.
It was so nice, up above, Suzume mused.
The world above was full of people, full of chaos, and so exciting. In a way it was “wild”, though a different kind of “wild” than the woods. It was wonderful. It was unusual. There was so much they didn’t know. So much to learn.
It was so much more interesting than this… cave… Suzume continued, Let’s go back.
We can’t with the eyes that watch us, Ayame countered, we need a plan.
Suzume hummed, Maybe… one of the watchers… will take us back up there? Nothing is forcing them to keep us here.
There were footsteps in the grass, and the sisters opened their eyes. Ayame turned her head, and sat up-- Suzume sat up shortly thereafter, their gazes drawn towards the approaching figure. It was a person they hadn’t seen before. Muscle-bound, incredibly tall, and with the most peculiar hat. Neither girl stood, neither addressed or greeted the man. Ayame moved closer to Suzume, tucking her face into Suzume’s shoulder.
We’ll get him to take us above ground, and then give him the slip, Ayame thought to her sister.

Bucket was a man of his age who had gone through so many different adventures. After all, how could he forget the times of his teenage youth, when he was flown all over the world for his demanding bosses, to do increasingly dangerous stuff like that time he and another group of mercenaries ambushed a small military convoy all the way in South America, the time he assisted a rebel army back in the middle east. Of course, he was as hidden away as he could, masked and the sort, so he never really got any recognition.. It wasn't like he did anything out of the common, he just fought to the best of his abilities.
Still, out of all of those adventures, including being back in Japan and wishing to fight inmates so he intentionally fucks with a bank alone to get himself arrested, he now had the worst, hardest adventure of all. Babysitting.
Dear God
Everyone else had things to do, like jobs to tend to, guests to listen and cater to or whatever other excuse they could find, so it obviously fell to Bucket to protect two little plant girls who, as he had been told, were important to Shocky, so it was imperative that they were safe and away from any extra possible danger. He had been told that they were untrusting, occasionally violent, rebellious and, as one had told him, "manipulative". He didn't exactly care, he just had to make sure the kids didn't die, yeah?
"Yo. I'm Bucket." With that said, he quietly sat down and pulled out a deck of cards, figuring that they were more than smart enough to keep themselves out of trouble so, while sitting in front of the door, the only way they could actually leave the premises, he started playing solitaire, to keep his brain active and awake, occasionally glancing up at them to make sure they weren't trying to cannibalize each other.. or were hungry, for that matter. "Tell me if you're dying. Or thirsty, whatever."

253 words ft. bucket The twins uncoiled themselves as the man sat, synchronized with one another, both curious and disinterested all at once. The man introduced himself as Bucket. Suzume laughed. It was a strange and tittering noise. Neither of them knew what a "bucket" was, but the word was funny nonetheless. Even Ayame cracked a smile. They walked cautiously through the grass, tilting at the waist to survey what the man was doing. Their stringy emerald locks slipped from their shoulders, and may have momentarily obscured the man's vision.
After a moment, each of the girls took a seat, to one side of the man in the silly hat. He had small slips of paper in his hands, each with different designs on them. The girls had seen cards before. A lot of people brought cards camping. The twins' favorite activity was to take cards out of the pack and then throw them skyward, letting them flutter to the ground like leaves. But Bucket… was placing them on the ground, in some sort of… pattern.
Why? Why?
Suzume, who was sitting closest to Bucket's knee, patted his leg insistently, hoping to draw his attention. Assuming he'd acknowledge the pat, Suzume would point at the cards, and then fix Bucket with a shrewd stare. They wanted explanations.
That is, until Bucket flipped a card to reveal a Queen. It wasn't empty or simple, like the other cards. It was beautiful.
And Ayame wanted it.
The quieter twin, after a moment of staring, snatched at the playing card.

Honestly, Bucket was expecting them to not care at all about his presence and instead cower into a corner, away from the scary-looking big guy creature that had walked into their room and just sat down without doing anything. Nah, instead, they were quick enough to come over to him, with the one he remembered being called Su-something patting his waist, pointing at the cards, something that made the giant mercenary take a few seconds to consider what she desired.
In the meantime, he let his more than just slightly experienced reflexes come into play when.. uh.. Aya, yes, Aya, tried to snatch at the playing card, wich just made the large man raise it out of her reach, the dots for eyes on his head moving slowly towards her, so that he could let her see the anchor in the space of his mouth curl up a bit in a grin. "I guess I ain't going to be a single player here, so there." Bucket simply let the card daintily fall towards the ground, so that Aya could do as she pleased with it, not even particularly worried of her damaging it or something of the sort.
In all honesty, it was just a pack of cards he found on one of the bodies on a victim who tried to sleigh the Kobayashi family and remembered the good ole' days of prison where he played cards for days on end when the boredom ate at him. "What I was playing is Solitaire. It's pretty simple. I just have to create four stacks of cards that go from an ace to a king. Ascending order." To exemplify, he showed her what he meant as an ace and, since he had stopped playing, he showed what he meant by sliding the Ace and 2 to below a 3, then a 4. It was simple enough, he figured that girls as supposedly intelligent and curious as them would understand it well enough.
"If you two are bored, I can teach you more card games." If they were interested in actually spending time doing something, he'd be interested too. After all, he was told to babysit the girls and, if he had the chance to make sure that they both enjoyed the time they spent together, Bucket would go for it without anything holding back. After all, it was sort of living his dream; Was it not? To be a father.

316 words ft. bucket As Ayame grabbed for the card, the masked man snatched it out of her reach, earning a flash of teeth and a snarl from the teen. She wanted that card! Ayame reached after it to no avail, her fingers grabbing uselessly at the air. Then the man let the card fall fluttering to the grass. Ayame snatched at it again, this time grabbing hold of it, before rising sulkily to her feet and moving out of arm's reach before crouching down to look at the card.
She pinched the card in both of her hands, her nose practically touching the cardstock as her eyes traced the bold lines. With a fingertip, she felt the smooth surface of the card.
Suzume, all the while, listened to the masked man speak. She understood very little of what he said, to be entirely honest. There were certain, complicated words that they hadn't encountered before, or had no need of in the woods. "Solitaire". "Ascending". But as he began to line the cards up, something stirred at the back of Suzume's mind, from before the great fire.
A man at a table. Brightly colored o's, which Suzume intuitively knew to be food, all in a line.
"One... two... three... four..." each word was drawn out, and each time they said the word, they touched their finger near the next piece of cereal, counting down the line.
The man in the mask was counting.
Suzume was contented to watch. And when the man offered to teach Suzume more card games, the girl nodded. Ayame, overhearing the offer, got to her feet, the queen still clutched in her hands. She wanted to learn something, too! It wouldn't be fair if only Suzume learned. The quieter twin took a seat next to Suzume, slightly further away from the masked man. She was still concerned that the man would try to take her card.
