Otome❖Kurokami ❝It's not always what it seems❞
Otome tried to recall again what that job offer said. The details were vague but the gist was that it was bodyguard work. That was what it was supposed to be. She was sure of it. So why was she being shown into a large mansion that didn't look like it needed the slightest bit of security help at all. At least not from someone like her. Her eyes wandered around under her mask. This was an impossible location for someone like her. Even with help, if someone told her the job was to break into a mansion like this she would have declined on the spot. The pragmatic fox wasn't going to bite off more than she could chew. And yet here she was now. That job ad was a trick and it certainly felt as though it was too late to back out. The man who showed her in didn't feel like he was the boss of this place or anything. And rightfully so. Whoever owned this mansion was probably sending servants to interact with all the guests, only showing their face to those who were really relevant. As far as Otome was aware, she was not such a person. In any case, while the bodyguard aspect of the ad wasn't entirely truthful, it sounded like they still needed someone pretty capable going by the man's explanation. Apparently she was supposed to watch a certain pair and make sure they didn't get up into any trouble. There have been attempts to escape and other such shenanigans that resulted in people getting hurt, spooked, or otherwise forced to retire from this duty. Otome wouldn't be the first and if she failed, she wouldn't be the last. In her head this was starting to sound more like prison guard duty than bodyguard duty. The man however clarified that the pair themselves still do need to be protected, likely from hurting themselves in some way. Otome asked if apart from watching them she was free to spend her time as she wished. Apparently that was fine. There was a library of sorts next door that she was welcome to borrow books from to read assuming she didn't have her hands full with the pair. It's not as though Otome was being overconfident. She was simply making plans for a possible future where this job would turn out to not be much of a hassle after all. Finally arriving at the designated room, she would first retrieve a book from the library before entering the room in question just so that she had one on hand right away. She had her mask on and tails out as this was supposedly a job for her villain persona. Hopefully it wasn't too startling an appearance for when she made her entrance. She knocked twice and opened the door and after stepping inside closed the door behind her. There were two inhabitants in the room as the man described. But what he didn't say was that they were two very young girls who looked like they were inseparable. Had Otome been bamboozled into some sort of babysitting duty? It certainly felt like it.

367 words ft. otome kurokami Ayame's shoulder, and a whiteboard and marker upon her lap. Suzume followed the newcomer with her eyes. Ayame seemed to pointedly not pay attention. The speed with which she navigated the pages suggested that she was not actually reading the book, but surveying the pictures.
Someone else was within the room, an older middle-aged woman with streaks of grey appearing here-and-there in her dark brown hair. The woman unfolded herself from an armchair and rose to greet the newcomer. She was a portly old woman, with flabby skin and large eyeglasses. The only thing that suggested she was a quirker was her eyes-- each round and comparable to galaxies. She wore the outfit of the hired help around the mansion.
"Lovely to meet you, miss," she greeted, bowing at the waist, "A few things of note, that they may not have advised you of-- first, these young ladies have a nasty bite. Take care not to let them do so. They bit a chunk out of man's arm! Also, if they start to seem dreary, they may need some sunlight. The garden in the back as artificial light. They know the way."
The advice was given in low tones, just below the hearing range of the two sisters. And they were far enough away that neither could listen to the two streams of consciousness either.
New eyes. Suzume remarked psychically, shifting her gaze from the conversing pair to Ayame. In other words, someone new was watching them.
I don't like it. Ayame intoned, without lifting her gaze.
Her face doesn't move. Big fox tails.
Finally, Ayame lifted her gaze, her hand sliding over the pages of her book, to keep her place. She stared at the masked figure, lips drawing back over her teeth, almost like a sneer. Suzume may have been intrigued by the newcomer, but Ayame's patience was already thin.
She's still just new eyes, Ayame retorted, looking down upon her sister, There are always eyes watching us. I hate the watching eyes. The shared thought ended there, but it was clear that the gears were still turning in Ayame's head. She loathed being contained, and she loathed being watched. Something needed to be done. Maybe they could give the newcomer the slip.

Otome❖Kurokami ❝It's not always what it seems❞
As Otome listened to the woman's explanation she couldn't help but feel that she had been put in charge of feral children. The pair certainly looked the part and she wasn't surprised at all that their primary attack of choice was biting. They were welcome to try. She was fairly confident of the punishment her tails could take. At least the woman didn't say anything about them being poisonous which would have been Otome's only point of concern. Otherwise it seemed there wouldn't be too much problems in case things had to get a bit rough. Hearing that the pair might occasionally need sunlight from the garden intrigued her though. Otome usually kept to herself and didn't care much for other quirks but given that this was work, it had her full attention. Plant people were certainly something you didn't see everyday. She nodded to acknowledge the advice and then casually waved goodbye without saying a word when the woman went on her way. Thanks to her mask hiding where exactly she was looking, Otome was free to keep her gaze on the twins while she seemingly moved around without her head really turning in their direction. She pulled up a backless chair and set it up much closer to the pair then the woman from earlier did and sat down, her face finally obviously staring at them. She did so for a few seconds before finally bringing out the book she had brought earlier and started silently reading. She did not bother exchanging greetings of any sort as the twins didn't seem interested in talking either. One of them was even purposely not paying attention to her at all. Otome wasn't exactly here to make friends if she didn't have to. So for her it was enough that she made it clear she was right there and that they were well within range of her tails should they try anything. Well, they wouldn't know yet how far exactly her tails could reach so they might be in for a surprise. Unlike the twins, the book Otome was reading had no pictures at all. It was a business studies book written by some successful tycoon. She was actually surprised to find this and many like it in the library she was pointed at earlier. The master of this house must have been quite the businessman. Or he just really loved to make money. In any case being someone who just wants to live a comfortable life, this genre was up Otome's alley. She would pretend to give the book her full attention when in reality she was actually glancing over at the pair every once in a while when they made any big movements or sounds. She felt the mask really helped there. At some point she began to entertain curious amusing thoughts about the two. Like were they more human or more plant? What kind of plant were they? Could you make tea out of them? Again no one said they were poisonous. She chuckled just a bit though she pretended it was because of something she read in her book.

351 words While the women spoke, the twins remained twined on the bed, with only Suzume watching. Finally, the middle-aged woman left, leaving the twins with the masked, tailed stranger. Ayame was likewise engaging in "watching without overtly looking", her face pointed towards the book on her lap. She mistrusted the new arrival as she mistrusted anyone affiliated with this mansion.
Suzume was much more overt with her intrigue, watching the masked woman as she took her seat. The more outgoing twin uncoiled herself from Ayame's side, creeping on all fours towards the masked woman. She perched at the bedside, orange eyes curious and bright.
Ayame, the whiteboard--
That was a new word they learned. Whiteboard. The thing they practiced writing on. Ayame didn't show she signs of hearing, so Suzume hissed quietly, and repeated herself.
Whiteboard!
Ayame made some low, growling noise and, with an underhanded toss, passed the whiteboard-- and shortly thereafter, the marker-- to Suzume. Ayame stared flatly at the masked woman, then returned her attention to the book. It was around that time that the woman began to inhale the spores that Suzume was releasing. Her thoughts became privy to both of them.
-kind of plant are they?
Suzume stared.
Could I make tea out of them?
Tea, Suzume echoed?
Leaf water, Ayame explained without lifting her gaze. In the early days, they'd been offered leaf water. And soba. Neither of which the girls were very fond of.
"Ah-!" Suzume gasped, perhaps surprised and a bit disgusted. She uncapped the whiteboard marker and clasped it in her fist, almost like a child holding a crayon. After a minute of careful concentration, she held up the whiteboard. If the masked woman showed no sign of noticing them, Suzume would make another cry in protest.
On the board, in shaky hiragana, were two words: "Suzume" and "Ayame". Each name was accompanied by an arrow. Suzume's arrow pointed straight up, at the twin that was holding the whiteboard. The other arrow pointed left, to the twin who was skimming the book. Suzume grinned as a gesture of goodwill, flashing her triangular teeth.

Otome❖Kurokami ❝It's not always what it seems❞
After a while one of the twins finally made a move which caused Otome to visibly raise her head as the girl approached the edge of the bed, staring at her curiously. The girl would then make a hissing noise at her twin who would respond with a growl before tossing what looked like a whiteboard and marker. This behavior intrigued Otome a bit as she took it as the pair obviously communicating. But rather than proper words they appeared to be using hisses and growls. There was proper understanding between them though as the other twin knew exactly what her sister wanted, who would proceed to make a surprised noise before scribbling something on the board. Otome shut her book for a moment, expecting that something was up even though she didn't understand what just yet. When the girl had finished writing, she flashed the board that now had two words written on it and arrows pointing up at her and her twin. Otome could just barely read the words Suzume and Ayame which she took to understand with their names. So they had names after all. And, crude as it might have been, they also knew how to write. It puzzled Otome then what the hissing and growling from earlier was. Perhaps they had a way of talking so that no one else understood them? Otome definitely saw why that would be something useful to have. Displaying her writing proudly, Otome wasn't too surprised at Suzume's toothy grin. Obviously if the lady earlier warned her about biting then these girls would have the proper tools for it. So was this their idea of an introduction? Otome's tails shifted a bit, one of them reaching forward towards Suzume until it was within handshake range of the girl. Meanwhile Otome would point at herself. She didn't want to be outdone in etiquette by a pair of feral girls so it was only right that she introduced herself properly as well. "Megitsune, pleasure to meet you."She didn't know if the girls understood what a handshake was, or in this case a tail-shake, but whether or not they took it Otome would pull her tail back afterward and open up her book again to resume reading. Her opinion of the pair would change in that it seemed they had some sense of understanding of society after all and were smart enough to write coherently. Otome figured she should have expected that. The lady from earlier did say that the two knew the way if they needed sunlight and so they must have been able to communicate with regular people just fine.

265 words ft. otome kurokami The twins did not understand the concept of a handshake-- on the one hand, it was very Western ideology, and on the other, it was very human. And besides which, the masked woman extended a tail. As the tail extended towards Suzume, the green twin would take a step back. This house often played host to some fantastic individuals, so there was no telling what a tail could do.
When the masked woman introduced herself, Suzume realized that this was some sort of truth, and extended a hand towards the tail, patting it lightly.
Ayame reached the end of the fairy tale book, and closed it. Not that this wasn’t fun, but… she needed a new book. And she wasn’t going to sit and bear witness to the first contact between Suzume and this new, masked species. Suzume, hearing her sister’s movement, looked up.
‘Where are you going?’ was the silent inquiry. Ayame stepped off the bed, passing only a cursory glance at “Megitsune” and Suzume.
‘I want a new book,’ the more staid twin insisted, padding towards the door, ‘I’ll be back.’
Suzume trotted towards the door just as Ayame was opening it and slipping through. They’d been ushered to the library by the help once before, so Ayame remembered the way.
‘What about Megitsune?’
‘She already has a book.’
Ayame neglected to mention the part about trying to give Megitsune the slip, too. Would the masked woman follow? How closely? If she didn’t follow at all, shaking her would be easy. Ayame walked briskly down the hall, her sister half-jogging to keep up.

Otome❖Kurokami ❝It's not always what it seems❞
It was more of a pat than a shake but a welcome without hostility was already more than what Otome could ask for given the expectations set. Now if the two would just continue to behave until the end of the day then this would be her easiest job yet, albeit somewhat dull. She was grateful that there was a place to procure interesting books close by as that was more than enough to keep her from getting bored. It would seem that she was tempting fate with her thoughts however. Not too long after introductions it would appear as though Ayame had finished 'reading' her book as she had quickly closed it and got out of the bed. This would grab the interest of her sister who would turn in her direction but say nothing. Suddenly she too would get off the bed and with her twin proceed to leave the bedroom. To be honest just either of them standing up and walking was enough to prompt Otome to get up herself and follow them. The two had been silent almost the entire time but Otome had a feeling that they could understand each other somehow. At the very least they were in agreement to leave the room. Well the servants did say that the two would occasionally need to go out to get some sunlight. So she assumed walking around the mansion was par for the course when it came to looking after the pair. She wondered if it was time for them to go out now for sunlight or if this short trip was entirely for something else. She would close her own book and follow the two as they made their way down the hall, carefully watching them. She was no more than ten or so paces behind them. "Where are you two going?"She would ask as they continued on their way. While the silent show had been a bit curious and amusing, there wasn't much point to her being their watcher if they couldn't communicate properly what they needed. Otome had already resigned that she was stuck with this job so she decided to make the best of it. Even if that meant stepping up her babysitting game. She would ask the same question again if the two would continue to decline giving her a proper response. She was patient but it would be in their best interest not to test her patience.
