525 words @mrdeath The lives led by the two strays were generally uneventful. They scavenged food, clothes, and various trinkets from unsuspecting campers, spent long, lazy days basking in the sun, taking walks, or going for swims. Sometimes, they hunted-- deer were their favorite, but they would settle for fish, too.
It was a simple life.
Except, of course, when their lives became complicated. There was one such complication weeks prior-- they were scouring a campground that was supposed to be empty. The round-faced twin rifled through a suitcase, deft fingers unearthing spills of satin fabric in bright patterns, fastening briefly onto a razor before tossing it aside. The thin-faced twin, all the while, dug through an ice chest, looking for food. Each girl sat on their haunches, absorbed in the task at-hand, one just out of range of the other.
The inhabitant of the camp came back, spying the first sister bent over the ice chest.
"What the fuck do you think you're doing?! Get outta there!"
Ayame snapped to attention, a vacuum-sealed bag of bacon clasped in her thin fingers. The man stalked closer. His head was shaved, and he had patterns on his face.
"That's my fuckin' food!"
She was frozen, he reached out.
"Give me that!"
Ayame wrenched the bacon out of reach, baring her teeth and hissing, he grabbed her arm. The frantic twin shrieked. Suzume came tearing out of the tent, moving on all fours.
"Shit! Shit shit shit!"
She sunk her teeth into the man's arm, biting off a chunk of flesh, straight to the bone. The man's terrified screams were all that pursued them as the two tore into the forest with their boon.
That was weeks ago, now. And though the memory was fading into the back of the girls' minds, tale of them had not faded. This singular encounter was a catalyst. Word of them led orders to be passed from Thunder to his underlings, a smattering of them, and they were dispatched to campgrounds near where the attack had happened. Each was tasked with finding the two assailants, who were rumored to be descendants of the Kimura clan-- former servants to the Kobayashi organization.
The light of the day was fading over the forest, casting tall shadows over the spongey floor. Birds were nesting and silent, the deer were coming down from the hills to get water from the trickling creeks.
The twins moved quietly and on all fours along the muddy banks of the creek, heads swinging from side-to-side as they went. Their dresses were hiked up around their waists and tied in knots. Their dirt-encrusted jeans were rolled up to their knees, and their flannel shirts were rolled to their elbows. Earlier that day, they had supped on an unsuspecting deer, and the signs of this were written in slashes of red upon their freckled, green faces.
They walked, one behind the other, picking over tree roots and outcroppings of brush. They then came to the edge of a round pool, deep and scintillating blue, kept fresh by the flowing creeks. Here, they would wash away the evidence of the hunt from earlier that day.

"Anotha' day anotha' dolla'." Zugai mused to himself; As Zugai exited his church on saturday he'd feel vibration in his pocket which he instinctively knew was his phone "Can't even wait five minutes..." Apparently something had went down and a man who wasn't supposed to die did, unfortunate, not for the dead man he was probably someone who deserved it and while one can never be too sure it was better safe than sorry, no it was unfortunate for Zugai. "Hope you got yourself some good hikin' shoes cause it's look like death's gonna have to make a trip through the forest." Zugai rolled his eyes. "How'd 'e die, what was the weapon." By now he started making his way to his car while holding his phone between his head and shoulder and lighting a cigarette. "Yea, here's the fucked up part, none. Notta' zilchamundo. Guy was fuckin' EATIN'" Zugai had a look of bafflement before just shaking it off as he got in his car. "Quirker than, describe it to me while I start preparin' my equipment." A subtle lie, he had no equipment but he did have some music. He placed his phone on the seat next to him as he started to fiddle with the radio until he managed to get on some funky music that poorly matched the situation. "Yea bout' that, no quirk it looks like. Normal run of the mill every day eatin', kinda similar to one of em' fuckin' uhhh Lions on that old network fuck was it called. National Geographic? Yea one of those, except pint sized and a lot less thorough, have you ever seen one of those fuckin' things they rip out the ri-"
"Who did it, got anything on that." Whoever this guy was Zugai wanted to get this over with as fast as possible to save himself anymore headache. "It's th- Oh fuck. One second my man lemme just.... Where the fuck is it." The sound of ruffled papers soon filled the call and Zugai's frustration started to get palpable. "Ah there it is the uh' fuckin... Kimura clan." Zugai once again was confused, he'd been in the business awhile but he was never one to memorize or mind the clans all that much. "Never heard of em'." The man ruffled through a few more papers. "Basically? Used to work for the big man, don't anymore, I don't remember them bein' fucking cannibals or having tiny pint-sized lion cubs but a lotta shit changes in fifteen years." Fifteen years? "Anythin' else?" The man ruffled through a few more papers. "Yea 'pparently they died bout.... Ten years ago? Looks like it was fake and they got some lions. Or maybe it was like a fuckin' wolf?" By now Zugai's patience had ran thin. "Alright, we're done I got the idea. Don't ever call me on saturday again or else death's gonna make its way to wherever this call's from." He hang up, perhaps not his greatest threat ever but Zugai was too busy trying to align things in his head.
Eventually as Zugai arrived was about the time he figured out he wasn't alone on this venture, there were about a dozen others, not the greatest luck for Mr.Death, they'd just get in the way. They fanned out each paired in two's except for Zugai who both was the odd member and had a quirk that was none too great for teamwork.
Zugai probably wouldn't be the first to encounter them, he wasn't much of a tracker and was apprehensive on killing on the day of the lord. Instead the first to find the girls would be two mid-sized thugs.

733 words ft. mr. death The two crouched on the muddy banks of the pond, raising into a standing position. They undid their belts and let their pants fall in vile piles upon the banks. They also peeled their flannel shirts off, piling those atop the pants. Clad only in threadbare sundresses, the two waded out into the pool, their dresses trailing on the surface of the placid water.
They crouched in the pool, cupping water in their hands and smoothing it over their arms, washing away the grime and the blood. Ayame dipped into the pool, taking great swigs of the water, and then wiping her face. Suzume cupped water in both of her hands, and tipped it back over the spill of vines that grew from her head.
Two silhouettes moved in the gathering dark. Men walking one behidn the other, wielding flashlights to fight the coming dusk. Thunder had made it very clear that their targets were to be captured alive, particularly if they were the descendants of the Kimura's, former servants to the Kobayashi's, hence their lack of lethal weapons.
Dried pine needles and sticks crackled beneath their feet. The girls, ever atuned to the ambient sounds of nature, wheeled back to face the source of the noise. Silence stretched between them.
"It's them," one thug hissed. He was weasely and thin, perhaps a few inches taller than the girls. The other-- bald, muscle-bound, and packed with muscles-- stepped around his accomplice, showing no hesitation or fear.
"I'll get 'm."
The massive man slid down the embankment with a grace unnatural for his size, padding past the discarded articles of clothing without sparing them a glance. He crossed the bank, and stood at the water's edge, well within the range for the girls to hear his thoughts.
We should leave.
He's standing by our clothes.
It wouldn't have been as essential to retrieve those articles, in particular, but squirreled away in the folds of their stiff jeans were hunting knives that neither girl would deign to part with.
"Come here, darlings," the man crooned. He seemed unarmed as he extended his hands towards them, "We're gonna take you some place nice. With pretty clothes, and yummy food. You want have to bite nasty men anymore. What do you say?"
His mind conveyed an entirely different message-- As soon as I get my hands on them, I'm going to beat them senseless-- Thunder said he wanted them alive. He said nothing about unharmed-- They'll pay for what they did--
The twins began to back further into the pool, deeper into the water.
Lose them in the woods, come back for our clothes?
Yes, we know the woods better. They can't keep up.
The two dove into the water, kicking towards the far shore, pursued by the frustrated shouts of the men. The sundresses, although gauzy and light above water, weighed them down underwater, and soon the muscular man was upon them. He grasped at both twins, snagging them by their bony ankles and hauling them above water.
They broke the surface of the water screaming like a wild ensnared animals, hissing, gnashing their teeth, raw voices reverberating off of the trees. They went straight for the man's arms, but rather than sinking their teeth into flesh, they met stone.
"Nice try," the villain crooned, "But you won't get a bite of me that easily."
A stony armor was rippling up his arm and across his face, overtaking his entire body. With each girl in his vice-like grip, the man trudged towards shore, dragging them behind him. The water kept their bodies aloft.
"Get the cuffs!" the man barked at his accomplice, his voice cutting through the frantic yowls and frenzied splashing. The other man slid down the bank, rummaging into his pockets for the handcuffs.
Once ashore, Ayame wrenched herself free, scrabbling towards their clothes.
"Get her!" the big man yelled. The small man swiped for Ayame, but she was too fast, ducking beneath his arms and digging frantically through their vile clothes, procuring a hunting knife.
"The fuck is th-"
She flicked it open, the large metallic blade glinting in the low light of dusk. Ayame crouched in the mud, the fabric of her dress clinging to her emaciated frame. She swayed threateningly, holding the blade at eye-level.
"Fuck. She's got a knife."
The weasely man tried to move towards her, and earned a low hiss.

The skull-faced man lit up a cigarette as he walked through the forest taking in the sights, it was a scenic visage to be sure but something about it dredged up some long forgotten anxiety and had an odd familiarity about it. He didn't like it, in fact he hated it, there was something about this place that was on the tip of his tongue. Whatever, he had something more important on hand at the moment anyway, or at least something important enough for him to not to think too long on it.
"Maybe sum' tunes." He almost pulled out a pair of headphones before reminding of himself that this is a tracking job, not a hit. He'd sadly need his ears, unfortunate. He would continue walking around somewhat aimlessly unsure of what to look for until he heard yelling and saw birds fluttering away in the distance "Fast, good means it's over more quickly." He flicked his cigarette to the ground and stamped out it's light as he made his way toward the origin of the sound.
Eventually making his way through the trees with now grass-stained shoes he found the two girls in their struggle with two thugs, were these really the people they were looking for? Two little girls? Zugai let out a sigh, this was a new low for him, but he'd refuse go lower by harming them. "What the fuck is this? Fucking tweedle dee and tweedle fucking stupid let em' go, this the way you handle children you fuckin' psychopaths." He barked out towards the men with a loud booming voice if a little raspy, the two men soon took notice and remain silent.
He'd march towards them with his hands firmly placed in his pockets, till he noticed their clothes in a pile and let out a wretched gagging sound. "So this is what the Kobayashi clan has come to, peeving on children, absolutely fuckin' disgustin'. " There was a small silence as the two looked at him unsure of what to do till Zugai pinched the bridge of his non-existent nose. "Hell I just say, let em' go and let em' dress." The two would look back at each other than back at him until he let out a sigh and walked over to the thin fox-like goon and shoved him over by his shit and stepped aside to the small girl. "Get dressed. Do it quickly." He pointed towards the pile of clothes before switching his gaze to the stone armored man, but he knew better than to tempt fate and released his grip.
If his mind were read in that moment it'd mostly mark his disgust with his fellow man and waiting to ask if the children were hurt.

272 words ft. mr. death Ayame swayed, keeping her knife opened as another man came stepping through the trees. His face was smooth and devoid of the usual physiological features common to faces... no nose, eyes, lips... His face was like a carcass, picked cleaned by scavengers but inverted in color. Ayame froze, her eyes widening. There were more?! The skull-headed man barked orders at the other two, ridiculing the men for how they were treating... the girls.
"They bit a fuckin' chunk outta our guy's arm," the stone behemoth spat back, "But sure, I'll let the little bitch go."
Suzume was released with a splash and she got hastily to her feet, scrabbling towards her sister with only a cursory glance towards the intruders. Ayame kept the knife raised, using her free hand to push her sister behind her, bearing her teeth at men, backing-up slowly.
The skull-faced man commanded them to get their clothes, and Ayame breathed a hiss through her needle-sharp teeth. He had stepped into the radius of their telepathy, his churlish thoughts whirling into the back of their consciousness. He thought untoward, cross things about the other two men, and meandered towards concern for the girls.
He's different, Suzume thought quietly.
They're the same.
They were beginning to back-up, away from the trio, away from their piled clothes. It was undeniable that the men wanted to take them away. And, quite frankly, the girls didn't want to go with them. These were strangers. They were terrified.
The two growled and hissed and continued their steady retreat. The skull-faced man would need to win them over if he didn't want them to bolt...

Death's gaze was an cold unfeeling one towards the stone man, he wasn't worth wasting breath on all things considered. He then set his eyes on the two girls who still were rather defensive, to the point of hissing like they were rattlesnakes. He tried to think back on his experience as a child, he struggled to think of any warm memories. He'd need something else, he fumbled through his person until he felt a rectangular shape and remembered a brief foray he had earlier in the morning.
He walked towards the two girls and knelt down close to them, he was un-intimidated by their dagger or their stand-offish demeanor. If anything it gave him a bit of a sinking feeling in his stomach. "You two girls don't like ya' venture far into civilization now do ya'." He tried to make some small talk but in his mind it came out sort of awkward, he doubted they even knew what the word civilization mean't.
After what'd seem like to be a brief silence as he accessed the condition of the two girls much more up close, he pulled out a small bar with symbols on it that said SNICKERS. "Got it for muhself but... Well, I ain't really all that hungry all things considered. You ever have one-a these? Tell ya' what, you two girls seem like ya' got more bone than meat... Well guess it'd be plant huh. Das' besides the point, I'll let ya' eat this little treat right here and in return I jus' wanna have a little chat is all. Trust me, it's pretty darn good." He'd rip open the plastic container as he outreached the bar slowly, he was pretty sure they understood what he was saying but he couldn't be too sure so he tried his best to avoid spooking them.

341 words ft. mr. death The man was trying to speak to them... but his words didn't make any sense. They were too complicated for the teens to piece-apart. Though it had to be clear, in how they acted, that they did not venture into society very often-- or really, ever. They kept to the fringes, stealing what they needed, trusting only themselves.
He rummaged into his pocket, which caused Ayame to follow the motion with her extended dagger, her lips twitching back over her bared teeth. What he withdrew wasn't intended to hurt the teens-- but to lure them. It crinkled in his grasp.
Both twins froze.
They were no strangers to sweets. Though they needed meat to survive, chocolate was... very good. Any chance they had to steal chocolate from campsites, they would take it. Mostly they could only find chocolate and marshmallows, but both of these delights were greatly coveted by the twins.
The chocolate bar was dangled before them. Neither twin budged, for fear that the man would grab for their wrists.
The hunting knife lowered ever so slightly. Suzume nodded owlishly from behind her twin, extending a knobby arm towards the offering. Ayame looked-on uncertainly, still grasping the knife tightly, even if it was almost at her side.
We just have to listen to him, Suzume insisted, And he'll give us chocolate.
Ayame glanced towards the other two men, her eyes sharp. She was rightfully suspicious.
Okay, she finally yielded. Suzume reached around her sister, snatching the bar from the man's extended hand.
A piece for each of us. But not for the men who grabbed us.
The bar was broken into three pieces. The shortest one-- only a nub really-- was held out to the skull-faced man. Suzume tucked her entire third of the chocolate bar (which was closer to a half of a chocolate bar) into her mouth, chewing it awkwardly with her shark-like teeth, and extended the other nub of chocolate towards her sister.
Ayame took the offering, popped it into her mouth, and watched the skull-faced man.

As he saw the two twins divvy up the sugary treat he rolled his eyes, it almost made him chuckle as he saw one sister con the other out of most of the bar, but it didn't as instead he gave a cold stare to Suzume for being well... Childish. He gave a somewhat warmer but still cold due to his nature stare to Ayama as he handed her his nub of snicker. "Trus' me I ain't hungry right now. " He lifted his head and exhaled a breath as he thought of what to say next.
So I heard ya' two little leopards bit a good chunk out of one a' my... He groaned. Employer's men. And well... He ain't too happy 'bout that so he just wants a little chat with ya' two. I promise ya' he won't hurt either of ya'." Really he didn't know whether or not Thunder would attempt to hurt them but if he did Zugai would make sure he wouldn't succeed. "Tell ya' what to sweeten the deal... I uh.. Hmm... I'll buy ya' both a snickers if you come with me and ya' can have the spare jerky that's in my car. How's that sound?" For some reason the cursory thought of them being familiar floated in his head but he had no clue as to why, maybe it's something to do with the mushrooms on their head he didn't know.

305 words ft. mr. death
The skeletal man spoke tersely about past events, declining the offer of chocolate. Suzume passed the remainder to her sister-- so, in the end, they both got about the same. Ayame nibbled the chocolate, watching the two flunkies as their apparent leader spoke. Suzume watched the skull-faced man.
They didn't understand "leopards". But they understood "biting". Suzume cracked a razor-sharp grin. Ayame mirrored the gesture. There was only one man, in recent history, who'd gotten his arm bitten. A man who'd grabbed Ayame against her will. A man who deserved it.
Apparently this man was protected by the boss of the skull-faced man, and the boss wanted to talk to them. That's what the man said with his mouth. With his mind, he wondered if the boss would hurt them… but had already decided that he wouldn't let the twins be hurt.
Suzume glanced towards her sister. The leader wanted to speak with them.
Ayame shook her head, without even lifting her gaze. Even if the skull-headed man protected them, they couldn't risk it. Not for the sake of snacks.
Suzume mirrored the gesture. No. No more men. They wouldn't go. They weren't even especially hungry, either, since they'd just eaten an entire deer earlier that day. The skeleton man was nice, though. After all, he fed them. And he wanted to feed them more. Much nicer than his assistants.
Suzume offered a hand to him. Should he accept it, she would start to lead him back down the bank, away from his associates.
He's with them, Ayame insisted, clearly uninterested in their new companion. She looked warily at him, wondering if he too would try and drag them away.
But he fed us chocolate, Suzume insisted, and he has more.
Unlike Ayame, it would seem that Suzume could be bought with promises of food.
