The Spymaster's Shadow | | | | | To the onlooker, it must have been quite a peculiar sight, to say the least. On the outskirts of Musutafu a lone figure was dashing through the forest. To the onlooker it might had looked like a scene straight from a shonen anime. Wooden logs which were tied together with ropes were swinging along the path, leading the cloaked figure to dive and jump over them with the finesse of an acrobat, and that wasn't everything! A sudden dash to the side made it narrowly avoid a flurry of shuriken which pierced themselves into the tree behind them, causing the figure to mutter softly. "Yare yare..." and yet another 'zip' noise suddenly made what appeared to be a shower of kunai to be launched from a nearby collection of bushes. With a violent sweep of their cloak, the figure suddenly seemed to hover, or fly or, what were they even doing?! A closer look would have revealed what happened, for a pink-colored rope had extended from underneath the cloak and pulled the figure upwards, allowing them to avoid the projectile rain when finally at long last the cloaked figure reached the end of their obstacle course. A gigantic oaken tree with a pair of bells hanging to a kunai!
Were they going to sling up again? Of course not! What self-respecting spy would do such a thing? No, instead they seemed to dash straight to the tree and started to rush up along it, mysteriously enough leaving small puncture holes where their boots had been. It was only after reaching the kunai and tapping the bells that the figure landed and groaned softly. "Seriously, he expects me to run the entire obstacle course within one minute?"
There was no mistaking this scenery: for a certain black-furred cat this was paradise.
A training ground where those nimble of body and mind were attempting to hone their craft. A place where a practice that had almost died down, was being practiced in earnest again. In front of the feline's eyes was surely the land of Asian spies, they who history had once revered to as Shinobi!
"Ugg and this suit is still too heavy for me to move in properly. We'll have to fine tune it once I get back." Walking over to the log that was impaled by the shuriken the masked figure mused softly. "But it is the least I can do to. To overcome this trial means to be a step closer to what I need to master." The figure's gloved hand reached for the shuriken, pulling them out one by one while the contraption at their under-arm made a soft 'ka-ching' sound. "And some of the mechanics don't function properly yet either. But such challenges are meant to overcome, isn't that right?"
It seemed almost as if they were conversing with someone, yet oddly enough nobody seemed in sight. "I'll be back in a bit, after all a 'Shadow' can't stay out for long." But little did that figure know that there would be a disruption to those plans... |

395 words ft. shadow He had stowed away under the seat of a van, the feline's preferred method of transport... a van that left from the grounds of U.A. and bee-lined straight for the mountains. He'd slept during the drive, as there was very little to see or hear. The humans in the car had very boring conversation, when they opened their mouths to speak at all--
But the payoff was good! The van had been parked while the cat still slumbered, locked against any potential looters. He awoke to silence, and stillness. With a few, easy leaps, the cat bounded from floor, to chair, to van window-- in the world beyond, a forest.
"Beautiful," Kuro murmured, his tail flicking contentedly. He batted at the lock, sliding it into an "unlocked" position. And then, mustering most of his strength, he toggled the handle, prompting the door to slide open on its own accord. He was just... that good. He leapt victoriously down from the seat, to the soft loam of the parking lot, and took-off for the trees. He just had to be sure to come back before the people did!
Kuro ripped through the under-brush, driven wild by the faint breeze and unfamiliar smells. What a magnificent place. Pine needles crushed beneath his paws, and he bounded off of rocks and over logs. In the distance, there was a crash, followed by a staccato of metal-against-wood. The cat froze, raising his head at the unfamiliar sounds. That didn't sound very forest-like. Well, he had to know what that was about.
Kuro trotted in the direction of the noise, assuming a more casual pace. A murmurous sound reached his ears, a voice... perhaps one of the people from the van? He couldn't be sure... The cat crouched, eyes wide, ears alert. A shiver ran up his tail. He took cover in a bush, obscured by the thick foliage. The only part of him that was visible was the very end of his face-- just his nose and his spring green eyes. Who was... talking?
It was then that he saw them-- some masked figure, wrenching knives from the trunk of a tree. Kuro watched owlishly. A villain? A hero? What were they? As they turned, lost in their conversation with nobody, he saw the glint of the kunai in their hands.
"Whoa--" the cat breathed. A ninja!! No way!!

The Spymaster's Shadow | | | | | It didn't take long for the figure to notice the disturbance, although little seemed to suggest that they were aware of the feline admirer. However, training in the forest away from society had its perks, for example, the fact that the only ambiance noises were those of nature. Most of the birds had long scattered since her training began, and similar most wild animals went into hiding or fled, so the soft barely audible noise had alerted the figure that something was heard.
After a moment where they gazed at the kunai in their hand the figure stepped behind the cover of the tree and wondered. The general direction the sound came on suggested the south, into the direction civilization was situated. There weren't many hiding places aside from behind some of the trees or behind some of the bushes, and the figure had the mobility to ensure they could investigate quite easily. While hidden from sight they raised a gloved hand toward the tree branch up above, a similar pink grappling hook as the first being launched upwards, and soundlessly coiling it around the branch they pulled themselves upwards.
Now out of sight it took only a few swings, the rustling of the leafs mimicking the sound that the spectator could have easily guessed came from their own body, finally led the cloaked figure to be hanging on a branch above the aforemntioned bushes. Nobody behind the trees, nobody among the branches.... Which left the bushes.
Pulling her body upside down, a trick similar to a certain old comic book hero that involved a spider as theme had allowed the cloaked figure to descend till they were right above the feline spectator, who was in for quite a surprise. A pink tendril, similar to those cat toys one purchased at a store slowly slithered along the side of the bushes, making its way along the ground in front of him, almost like it was alive, the tendril arched upwards, making a nudging motion toward the cat's snout and then nudged upwards, where the masked figure lowered their other hand to the side of their head in a playful salute and called out to the feline.
"Yo~"
The voice was soft, the higher pitch might had suggested feminine in nature, yet a moment after the motion the tendril holding her up came loose, and the poor masked stranger came crashing down onto the ground with a surprisingly soft bouncing motion. "Unya~ Not exactly a sight you want to see a kunoichi make... Let's keep this our secret, okay kittykins?"
With her body upright she extended a gloved hand, although after a moment of consideration pulled off the glove, revealing a rather soft-looking hand, and should the feline try to sniff it, a pleasant fruity scent.
"What you be doing out here in the wild? It's rare for even hikers to visit this part of the forest" At least the shadow didn't seem to be hostile toward the feline, but it certainly was an interesting sight to behold! |

311 words ft. shadow The figure ducked behind a tree, which was enough for Kuro to poke his head all the way out of the bush. W- wait! Where were they going?! He shouldn't have said anything. He took a step out, ready to follow them, when a voice from above addressed him.
He heard them before he saw the lure, which made the small cat jump in alarm, looking reproachfully at the masked figure. His back arched, and his tail flicked skeptically at the proferred... tendril... The stranger suddenly, and rather unexpectedly, dropped from the branch, sending the cat scrabbling out of the landing zone. Rather than landing with a thud, however, they bounced, offering a winsome ultimatum to the cat.
Luminous green eyes regarded the gloved hand, the masked face... he didn't trust it. People with gloves grabbed cats by the scruff of their neck. Seeming to sense his apprehension, however, the mysterious figure removed their glove, extending a pale, human hand towards the cat. The motion of removing the glove was enough to spread the human's scent upon the air, so the cat drew cautiously closer, following their nose.
They smelled human, so at least they had that going for them, but they still wore a mask! And that was suspect! Kuro cautiously butted his head against the back of the extended hand. The masked figure, all the while, asked how the cat had made it to this part of the woods. The cat lifted his gaze towards the ninja. The arch in his back was gone, and his tail was starting to calm down.
"Meeewww," Kuro insisted. As if he'd use his people-words with some mysterious, knife-wielding ninja. And become kitty sashimi? Yeah right! The cat attempted another nudge with his forehead. He had to ascertain whether or not this person was a cat-person and, by extension, worthy of his trust.

The Spymaster's Shadow | | | | | The masked figure gazed quietly at the cat, crouched in front of it while listening to the soft meeww. The arch in his back was gone, and with the tail starting to calm down it was a clear sign the cat was hesitant, unsure if she was friend or foe, and so the masked figure gently left her hand open, lightly tilted so both the palm and back of her hand were visible, yet not moving in for a motion yet. It was only after a moment that she turned the back of her hand upwards and slowly motioned. "Don't worry, I don't mean you any harm. Here let me show you."
A soft and gentle voice called out to the cat, and after the nudge with his forehead she tried to slowly, while ensuring not to alert the cat attempted to gently rub its head. She knew all too well about the fact cats were different than dogs when it came to earning their trust. The Spymaster clearly loved dogs, but his shadow preferred cats by far. In fact, judging from the gentle rubs of her fingers, and the careful attempts to lightly scratch the space between its ears, that this masked figure was quite used to dealing with cats.
A momentary pause followed as the figure spoke again. "So little one, are you at ease now?" After waiting for affirmation, the figure chuckled softly. "Of course, it's not easy to trust a masked person, is it? But surely a shinobi needs a disguise~" Clearly amused at this unexpected situation the figure continued to speak. "I am 'Kage', or 'Shadow', the aide to Spymaster, you could say that I'm as much a 'hero' as I am a 'kunoichi', I am a 'hero that walks in the shadows'." Finishing the little scratching on the cat's head she withdrew her hand and mused softly. "Still, you're quite a sneaky one yourself, able to approach so closely without being noticed." |

300 words ft. shadow Kuro watched, his tail twitching, as the masked figure kept their hand aloft and extended, tilting it to be surveyed. Even though their face was hidden, their voice was sweet. And their hand seemed normal enough. Kuro decided to trust the proffered hand, mostly because he wanted pets—and he allowed the masked figure to scratch his forehead. He even rubbed his head emphatically against her palm. If she let him, Kuro would walk along the hand, prompting the person to pet along his spine, too.
When the young woman began to speak, the cat flopped onto the ground with the faintest “whump”, rolling partially onto his back. She’d established herself as a cat-lover, so he’d soak-up the attention for a little bit. The flop was his affirmation, so the ninja continued to speak. He rubbed his head into the dirt, his tail twitching. The girl explained how the mask was a disguise, they called themselves Kage, and that she was in fact a ninja.
Kuro preened as the masked figure complimented his sneakiness, licking the back of his paw coyly. This paw was then dragged over the crown of his head. His fur smelled like her, now—which made Kuro certain that it was, in fact, a “her”. Knowing this made her seem a little less scary.
“I sleep under the seat,” the cat remarked absentmindedly. His pride made him bold, and he paused mid-lick of his paw when he realized what he’d done. He looked at the ninja, blinking slowly. At the first sign of danger, he’d make a break for it—he had size on his side, “I find warm place to sleep, I sleep there. Then, van moves. I wake up here. Hear you.”
He might as well explain himself, if he was choosing to talk.
