Training. That was all Kenshin seemed to be doing lately. Whether it was training his mind at school, training his body by taking G's lessons to heart, training his hand coordination and fingers as he strummed the strings of his bass guitar, or training his reflexes and techniques with a sword, it was clear that the boy was seeing much improvement. And it showed. He could maintain his high grades more easily, run for longer without tiring as quickly, play songs more accurately and with fewer mistakes, and swing his sword harder and faster. There was definitely growth. However, this was not nearly enough in Kenshin's opinion. There was always room for improvement. He could do better, get stronger, be tougher. There could not be any slacking off, no unnecessary rest, lest he becomes complacent and all that progress goes down the drain. No, Kenshin would never allow that! He needed to keep on getting better. He wanted to be the best of the best! How else would he be able to compete against those who currently stood above him, not just in height but in skill? One of those people was Tetsuko Shindou. Although the very first match they had was several months ago, Kenshin could still clearly remember it all like it was only yesterday. It was a day that he would always remember (barring something like memory loss or old age or something). Prior to that day, Kenshin had never lost to a sword user outside his family. Perhaps it was naive to think that he was the best swordsman other than his very skilled mother, but when clashing blades against anyone else, the boy had always come out on top. No one ever came close to pushing him to his limit. That was until Tetsuko came along. Although their match was fierce, it was ultimately Tetsuko who had claimed victory. On that day, Kenshin had felt two things for the very first time. Frustration from having been defeated for the first time, and immense joy from someone having pushed him to his limit and had given him the battle of his life. Naturally, Kenshin had declared Tetsuko to be his rival in swordsmanship. He would continue to hone his skills day after day, eagerly awaiting the day when the two would fight once again in a glorious rematch. He was determined to not repeat the same outcome of the previous battle. No, this time, he would win! He would best the swordswoman in a fair and honorable clash of blades. With this intense desire to beat the first person to have ever bested him in combat, Kenshin's respect and admiration for Tetsuko and her skills only grew. Teaming up with her to protect Shien's Dojo from the shadow swordsman Kagemitsu Yamitou not once but twice only help increase the amount of respect for Tetsuko Kenshin had. Kenshin loved to talk to his family about his battles with the girl so often, that his younger brother Sai began teasing him about having a crush on the girl. Naturally, Kenshin quickly grew annoyed by this and had to constantly explain that this was not the case. It was clear that Kenshin saw Tetsuko Shindou as a worthy opponent and rival, a powerful ally, and a good friend. Today started off like any other. As soon as he was free, Kenshin took the train from Tokyo to Musutafu to visit Shien's Dojo as usual. Once there, the boy greeted the old swordmaster and the other students. Then, he requested that several of the students spar with him and try to gang up on him all at once. Naturally, they stood no chance against the skilled swordsman. Kenshin had been developing a new kind of martial arts, one that was unique to him. He dubbed it Kenshin's Asskicking Techniques And Nonlethal Attacks™, or K.A.T.A.N.A. for short. The purpose of K.A.T.A.N.A. was to allow the boy to continue to fight well with a sword while also being able to fight without one as well. Seeing as the boy was mostly vulnerable when he was not donning his armor, it was important to be able to learn how to fight without the need for his sword arm or a sword-like weapon. Thanks to G's training, the fighting style was coming along well. However, it was far from perfect. There were still several kinks to iron out and new techniques to learn. Of course, the best way to hone and improve a martial art was constant and diligent practice. And thus Kenshin came to the dojo to improve his technique. There posed a problem, however. None of the students were anywhere near his level. They were no match for Kenshin, even eight against one. And Shien himself could not help the boy, at least not all the time. He had a dojo to run, visitors to greet, and students to supervise. Besides, he was far too strong and would need to hold back. Kenshin did not want a fight like that. He wanted both sword users to be able to go all out and stand on an even playing field. He needed someone strong, someone to try out K.A.T.A.N.A. on, someone who could push him to his limits while being pushed to theirs. Someone like Tetsuko Shindou. Fortunately for the boy, he would not need to wait much longer before getting his wish. | Word count: 900

"To be unrivaled is to stand at the summit of our art. So does it follow, that to be rivaled, to have a rival, an equal, is to have cause for further honing of your skills. Eagerly draw your blade, and let it be tempered against opposing steel, polished with blood and sweat. Use it to relentlessly carve your own path up the mountain. Then, once you reach the top... Well, who's to say?"The importance of the rival had been a central part of the Shindou's philosophy ever since the former headmaster, the 21st of Jikishinkage-ryuu, had uttered those words. He'd passed them on to Tetsuko's grandfather, who'd passed them on to Tetsuko's mother, who'd passed them on to Tetsuko herself... Now they were one of the pillars of the swordswoman's strict and brutal training system. Not once had Tetsuko forgotten the importance of having equals, not once had she forgotten to keep carving her way up the mountain. So much of her time had been spent on training, on swinging her sword until the very motion was as natural as breathing. Tetsuko had honed her skills to achieve her goals, as countless practitioners of Kenjutsu had. Those goals themselves were simple. The restoration of honor. The protection of those she loved. The simple glory of being the very best she could be. Simply, yet the path to them was anything but. Taking many forms, perhaps one of the most fruitful training methods Tetsuko had utilized as of late was sparring. Clashing her blade against others' to test her own skill. Tetsuko had fought a handful of people far beyond her level, those with age and experience on their side. She'd also fought no shortage of those below her abilities, those who didn't have her bloodright or training. However, the smallest subset of Tetsuko's sparring partners carried a tiny amount of swordsmen. That was, the few peers she considered her equals. Arthur Hale had been one. The British blade wielder whose athleticism had aided his unconventional swordplay. The other, even closer rival, was one Kenshin Akadama. At the time of their spar, Tetsuko had never been as close to defeat in the realm of swordsmanship, as she had been when she clashed against the red samurai. His skill was evident right away, Tetsuko still wondering what his lineage could be. She did not yet know where he'd first learned the art of the blade, however she knew quite well his skills. He'd managed not only to take her on as an equal, but also to aid in the defeat of the dark swordsman who'd threatened Shien's Dojo on two occasions. His prowess was known well to the ironblooded lass, who took pride in being called his rival. Eagerly, she'd awaited their rematch. Not just to see her own growth, but also, to witness his. An honorable clash of blades would bring them both higher, elevate them closer to the summit. Tetsuko cared not who came out on top, so long as she could channel her own pride and fury into her sword, and test it against his. This desire to pit one's whole self against another, that was the true essence of rivalry that the 21st Headmaster had detailed. Of course, more than a rival, Tetsuko also considered Kenshin a friend. Which is why she was determined not to let him down. That was what she'd told herself on this day, the day where samurai would clash! Finally deciding now was as good a time as ever to see if their rematch was fated to be - without interruption like last time - Tetsuko would deviate from her usual training regime to head off to a familiar locale for the both of them. Shien's Dojo. If Tetsuko was going to find him anywhere, it was there. That was what she knew as she set off from the dorms, to that place where a certain menace had been cut down... It wouldn't be long before the Shindou girl walked right into the Dojo, an eager smile on her face, the smile of warrior anticipating a good fight. Formalities were had, Tetsuko quickly bowing to Master Shien and greeting him before the girl walked over to the sparring area. There, she saw exactly what she was hoping to see. Kenshin Akamada, proving himself much stronger than the fodder he was testing himself again. Not nearly enough to elevate him up the mountain. He needed a true rival, and Tetsuko was happy to provide. "Kenshin-san!"Tetsuko would bellow from a distance as she walked toward him eyes looking for a spare bokken. "It's been a while. You look like you've improved."There was no point shying away from it or being coy, Tetsuko cut right to the chase. "One more time!" Several of the students approached Kenshin, moving in to swing their wooden swords. A few blocks, parries, and counterattacks later, and the students were all knocked down and disarmed. With a smile, Kenshin helped them all up. "You're all showing a lot of improvement. Ukuro, you even got close to blocking that last strike! Now all of you go take a break for now. You all earned it." The students bowed and made their way to the benches to sit down and relax. Kenshin took a short break as well. After sitting down for a few minutes and drinking from his water bottle, he got up and then went back to practice his sword techniques. A few students got up to join him once they were done with their break. As Kenshin continued to swing his bokken around, he heard the dojo door open. Glancing to it, the boy saw Tetsuko come in. The smile on his face said it all. He was happy and excited beyond words to see the swordswoman again. "Tetsuko-san! Hi!" Seeing her look for and pick up a spare bokken made Kenshin's eyes light up. Was she doing what he thought she was doing? "Yeah, it's been too long! I have improved greatly since the last time we met. I trust you have as well?" That was more of a rhetorical question than anything. Of course she had gotten stronger too. Kenshin had no doubt there. She was a warrior who sought to keep improving herself, to hone her skills and not let herself get rusty. Kenshin was the same. And then Tetsuko uttered those words. Ah, that short but sweet sentence! Not even an oblivious moron would fail to see the excitement written ever so clearly on the boy's face. To him, it was like his birthday had come early. "I've been looking forward to our rematch for quite some time now. I'm ready whenever you are." The boy then smirked. "Though it's only fair to warn you. I have no intention of letting things go like last time. You'd better give me nothing less than your absolute best."Naturally, the students became excited upon hearing what was happening. They all eagerly whispered among themselves, looking forward to the incoming spar. Even Shien himself could not help but look forward to the fight between two very talented sword users. To call this a battle of the ages may have been a bit of an exaggeration, but it was up there. Of course the old swordsman was not surprised when Kenshin looked in his direction and asked him to oversee the battle. "Of course! It would be nothing short of an honor and pleasure!"All preparations were made. The students sat down on the benches, watching as both Kenshin and Tetsuko walked to the main arena. With bokken in hand, Kenshin smiled as he spoke to Tetsuko. "Regardless of who wins, let's make this a battle to remember. Best of luck, Tetsuko-san!" The boy then assumed his battle stance, holding his sword with both hands as a sign that he was not holding back. Once the two were ready, Shien would speak and announce the start of the match. "BEGIN!"As soon as the old swordsman had declared the start of the match, Kenshin was already on the move. He thrusted his bokken forward, lunging toward Tetsuko in a manner similar to how she started off their first fight all those months ago. He doubted that such a technique would catch her off guard. Still, it was clear right off the bat that Kenshin's earlier words were not mere bragging. He really had grown quite considerably in skill since last time. If pulling off a victory was difficult for Tetsuko last time, then it would be even more so now. The boy was not kidding when he said that she should bring nothing less than her absolute best for this fight. After all, he would do the same. | Word count: 666

By the time Tetusko had arrived at the dojo, Kenshin had already proved his mettle against many of the other students. So of course, when they were to finally clash, it was surely going to be a fight to remember. The two top wielders of the blade within that Dojo, old Master Shien not included, were to do battle in one of their many glorious spars, an event that every student of the dojo waas surely looking forward to. As much a friend as he was a rival, Tetsuko was glad to see Kenshin doing well, and he quickly picked up on what she was there for. Tetsuko grinned back at they boy, nodding firmly in response to his question. "I'd be bringing shame to too many people, if I hadn't improved every day since we last met. I'm sure you're the same." They were both carving their own paths up the mountain, after all. Each of them keen warriors, on the constant quest to perfect their skills. Part of that quest, that journey, was to make sure they always had someone to test those talents against. A rival was of the utmost importance, after all, and they'd found one in each other. As she offered up the rematch, it was evident immediately, that Kenshin was just as excited for it, if not more. They were both looking forward to this, after all! Tetsuko returned a smug grin at the boy as he asked her to give her best, something she obviously already intended to do. "I'd ask the same of you. Give me your strongest, and let me clash against with my strongest. That's what this is all about!" The Shindou girl declared proudly. Naturally, the rest of the dojo was keen to see the clash too, and fortunately they'd the reliable old Master Shien to help oversee the fight for them, to ensure it was good and honorable. The students would all be watching, though Tetsuko didn't feel any pressure from the eyes on her. All the girl's focus was on the coming battle above all else, not to say they wouldn't still be putting on a show! Holding her own bokken lightly, Tetsuko nodded to Kenshin's words, returning the sentiment. "Of course, this is one of many rematches, I hope. So let's make theme count!" The Shindou girl grasped her blade firmly, shifting back into one of the defensive stances of her style, just before Shien set things off! BEGIN! He had shouted, and no sooner had Kenshin rushed forward towards the Shindou girl. Her own stance was ready to intercept such an offensive, the counter-heavy style of Jikishinkage-ryuu prepared to deflect the thrust as the Shindou girl swayed to the side and pushed the bokken away! However, already, Tetsuko could feel the skill behind his sword, the blade whistling past her at a point too close for comfort. Her own deflection had just barely worked, the gap between them was clearly closer then ever! It was enough to put a satisfied smile on Tetsuko's face, glad to know that her opponent was going to give her such a challenge. Tetsuko naturally followed it up, twisting her blade in her hand to re-angle it for a quick diagonal upward slash at Kenshin's torso, nothing fancy, but good to keep him on his toes, as she transitioned it into another slash the other way. Her own talent had been honed, yet they stood against one another now as equals, as true rivals! words: 000 • tags: you • notes: stuff

Kenshin was not surprised that Tetsuko was able to deflect his attack, albeit just barely. Not giving him time to make another attack, Tetsuko was already on the move with her own attack. Kenshin chose to evade rather than trying to intercept. Had he been even an instant late, he would have been too slow. He only just barely managed to get out of the way of the attack. It was already becoming clear that this battle would be Kenshin's toughest battle yet. And he would not have it any other way. The boy knew that he could not dodge or parry Tetsuko's sword for very long. Doing so was just impractical, as she was too good of an opponent for such a strategy to be consistent. Still, attacking recklessly was no good either. Even if Tetsuko's main focus was not defense, she was far more efficient at defending and countering than Kenshin was. Not that he was bad at being defensive by any means. It was just that his usual method of attack was to take out opponents with quick decisive strikes, only employing defensive maneuvers and techniques when a quick victory seemed unlikely. So if a quick decisive blow was not going to work, and a war of attrition would not go in his favor either, just what would work? For now, Kenshin's only plan of attack was to not overexert himself so as not to tire out so quickly. At the same time, he would keep Tetsuko on her toes so that she could neither stall out this fight and wear him out, nor whale on him relentlessly. After the exceedingly close dodge, Kenshin was already back on the offensive, aiming several quick jabs and swings at Tetsuko, who would undoubtedly either block, parry, or dodge them all. The goal of these specific attacks were not to get a hit in. At least not yet. Rather, Kenshin wanted to observe Tetsuko, see how she moved and reacted. Observing her stance was like inspecting a samurai's armor. The boy wanted to see if there were any weak spots he could exploit, and then if there were any, take advantage of them. At the same time, he needed to be careful not to make his own weak spots so obvious. After all, the last thing he wanted was to make this an easy fight for the swordswoman. Kenshin would refuse to let this end so quickly. It was not fair to either warrior. After Kenshin's attacks, he was back on the defensive. To remain adaptable, unpredictable, unwavering in spirit. That was the only way to fight an opponent as strong and skilled as Tetsuko. But would that prove to be enough? | Word count: 452

It had been a long time since they'd last fought, but even so, it was evident neither combatant had let their blade gather rust. Her counter-cut was dodged closely by Kenshin, emphasizing the lack of a gap between them. They were true rivals ; and the complete mystery as to who would come out on top was the most thrilling part of their clash! Tetsuko had clashed against many stronger than her before, but of those she'd fought, who she had a chance to win against... Kenshin was easily the strongest. He was easily her closest rival in the realm of swordsmanship. Following his dodge, Kenshin followed up quickly, not giving Tetsuko the chance to put pressure on him. Jikishinkage-ryuu was a style that specialized in a firm defense and viscous counters, so Kenshin's ability to force Tetsuko back into a close guard spoke volumes about his skills! Even though his testing strikes were not enough to get past a counter-volley of deflections and blacks, it forced Tetsuko to rely on her defensive stance - and a battle could not be won with defense alone. Tetsuko had to fight back, if she really wanted a chance at winning! Nonetheless, letting him get even one of these strikes in could open her up, so Tetsuko threw up the ironclad defenses of her style a soon as he jabbed toward her! That distinctive firm-footed stance was assumed as she kept her center of gravity low and performed a number of quick, agile deflections against Kenshin's un-aimed attacks. Never moving her blade more than she needed to, Tetsuko used her sword like a shield, however this rigid form did highlight one of the distinct weaknesses of her style... However! Staying on defense and doing nothing but block and deflect was not the essence of Jikishinkage-ryuu! No, it was to remain immovable, and strike back with ferocity! Kenshin's adaptability was a great asset ; so Tetsuko needed to make sure she was as quick to strike as she was to defend! Naturally, Kenshin couldn't attack forever - no warrior could, nor should they. Eventually, as you strained your muscles, or your movements became predictable, you had to falter, or withdraw to your guard... That's what Tetsuko was counting on! The quick flurry of Kenshin ended with him moving back to a defensive position, so Tetsuko wasted no time with idle, testing strikes, immediately moving her blade into a high, overhead guard, her intention to swing it down clear immediately! "ICHIMONJI!"Sliding her feet forward with a quick step, Tetsuko would deliver a powerful but controlled downward swing at Kenshin, aiming to use his transition to defense as her opportunity to turn the pressure around! She'd follow it up with another pair of quick overhead cuts, powerful and risky, but controlled and pressuring! She wasn't going to let him adapt in time to beat her - that was her goal, to make sure the formidable and relentless arts she knew could stop him before he had the chance to capitalize on the weakness of the system! words: 000 • tags: you • notes: stuff [/font][/div]

As Kenshin and Tetsuko continued to clash blades, the dojo students could not help but watch the match in awe. Never have they seen two people use a sword so skillfully. They were in a whole other league of their own! Although a couple of the students eagerly whispered among themselves and decided to place bets on who would ultimately win the match, the general consensus was that it was far too soon to figure out who would best the other. They continued watching excitedly, waiting to see who would get the first hit in. As soon as Kenshin's moves became more defensive, Tetsuko went on the offensive. And from the looks of it, she was ready to stop him from adapting, aiming to end this match before he could figure out a way to exploit her sword techniques. Naturally, Kenshin would respond with his own counterattacks, determined to figure out the best way to break through her offensive pressure. However, he simply could not avoid or block Tetsuko's attacks forever. She was far too skilled for that to ever be effective. Sooner or later, Kenshin would get hit. It was impossible for him to win without taking damage from such a skilled opponent. That was simply fact. However, that was something he was counting on. He had one technique up his sleeve. A powerful counterattack that he would unleash as soon as he got hit. In that one moment Tetsuko would attack, Kenshin would unleash his counterattack, essentially landing a decisive blow while being attacked. The boy's reasoning was that with how hard he had been working to avoid Tetsuko's attacks, she would probably be driven to get a strike in. And once that happened, he would immediately go on the offensive, hopefully catching her with her defenses lowered. With any luck, she would not catch on to his strategy and be caught off-guard by his sudden shift from defense to offense. Realistically though, Kenshin doubted that Tetsuko would not have some sort of countermeasure against any possible counterattack. And such a technique would only work once. If Kenshin messed up, or if Tetsuko caught on, she would be on the lookout for such a technique, making it that much harder to take her down. Kenshin smiled. This was why he loved sword fights so much. Not only was it a lot of fun, but there was also strategy and skill behind it. Swordsmanship was not merely just swinging one's sword blindly and hoping that opponents would just fall. Swords were more than just a weapon. It was a shame that there were those who did not understand that, and insisted on using swords to hurt others. Then it happened. As Kenshin tried to block one of Tetsuko's attacks, he felt her sword pushing past his defense. Now! Shifting into an offensive stance, Kenshin immediately thrusted his sword towards Tetsuko. "HANGEKI!" 反撃 The attack was swift, but not instantaneous. If Tetsuko chose to, she would just barely have enough time to pull away and avoid his attack. However, should she choose to continue with her attack, she would successfully land a blow on Kenshin and be one step closer to defeating him, but would most likely be unable to avoid his counterattack in time. Alright, Tetsuko. How will you react? Will you accept my one-for-one? Or will you pull away once you realize what I'm up to? | Word count: 568

Tetsuko felt not the eyes upon her, for though she was aware of the crowd they had drawn, nought mattered to her now but the opponent, nay, the rival before her! Two students of the blade, sure to become legends someday, would be giving the others quite a show as the let their blades clash, as they ebbed and flowed through combat. That 'ebb' and 'flow' was the distinctive nature of spars of this manner, of flowing between offense and defense, dealing with your opponent's attacks while allowing yourself to get in your own. Such was the nature of any martial art, truly. Tetsuko's powerful technique, however, was intended to disrupt that flow, like a crashing wave upon a gentle shore. If she could shift the advantage in her favor and hold on to it with an iron grip, she'd be able to control the very tides of this battle. However, it wasn't going to be that easy. Tetsuko had known it wouldn't, but at the very least, learning how Kenshin responded would also be worthwhile! His own counterattacks would force her to slow her vigorous pace somewhat, as she used the firm footing of the Ichimonji to transition into aggressive blocks that made sure she didn't drop her pace too much. Her violent but controlled blows continued, with force and might. This technique was designed to crush, to overpower, such was the intent of its creator: The Iron Will of Kashima himself, Ryouichi Shindou. However, the technique did have one counter... For although it could decimate weaker-willed men, a sufficiently strong spirit could force its way through! Much to Tetsuko's joy, Kenshin's strong spirit matched her own, as he'd soon display! As one of her powerful strikes came in, Kenshin shifted into an offensive stance - as his defense was broken! It was a dangerous move on his part, but fortunately for him, the Shindou girl was committed to her own risky technique. One of the Ichimonji's most notable aspects was that the strong stance and forward momentum made it hard to throw the user off balance. In other words... Even if she was hit, she could still commit to her own blow! As Tetsuko's blow came down onto Kenshin's face, she'd feel a sword thrust into her own, her stance remaining firm as it struck her just above the jaw, thanks in part to her own tucking her head in. A pained grunt was let out as she staggered back slightly, feeling her head spin a bit as she refocused on Kenshin. The students had wondered who would get the first hit in, and now they knew... Just how close these two were when it came to their skill with the blade. Tetsuko wiped her mouth, feeling the warmth of blood as she grinned towards Kenshin. He had some tricks, it seemed, at least she'd been able to make him use on... On the other hand, if he could pull out that trick again, it trivialized the usage of her Ichimonji. This had been a fair trade if there ever was one! Recollecting herself and steadying her breathing, the Shindou girl smiled towards Kenshin. Time for a change of strategy. Raising her blade up into stance, she brought her feet close together, and held her hands low on the weapon as she assumed a low guard. With a simple nod, she ushered Kenshin forth. If he wanted to attack so badly, she'd have to show him why her art was that of the immovable heart! words: 000 • tags: you • notes: stuff

The silence was almost deafening as the students continued to watch in anticipation. Which of the two skilled sword users would be hit first? Who would ultimately win? Like a suspenseful anime or movie, Shien's students had their eyes glued on the match. Even Shien himself watched in silence. The old swordmaster smiled. Just from seeing the two fight, it was clear that both had drastically improved since their first spar and the two fights they had with the shadowy swordsman. He was aware of the little bet going around with the students about which of the two would get a hit in first. Shien chuckled. If he were to take part in such a bet, he would claim that the two would break past each other's defenses and strike at the same time. With how close in level their swordsmanship was, it was really anyone's guess. Kenshin grinned. Success! Hangeki worked! Though it came at the cost of getting an unpleasant strike on the jaw that made the boy grit his teeth and grunt in pain, Kenshin managed to land his counterattack on Tetsuko, striking her face at the same time and place she struck his own. A one-for-one trade, so to speak. However, Kenshin knew that such a technique would probably not continue to be effective after the first time. Now Tetsuko knew what to expect from that move, so the tiny element of surprise was lost. Perhaps the girl was devising a plan to counter his counterattack with her own. Still, Hangeki was only one of many techniques Kenshin had. Rarely would battles be decided by the use of a single move. No, to even have a shot at beating someone as skilled as Tetsuko, Kenshin would have to skillfully use anything and everything he had ever learned. To hold back was to forfeit. To hesitate was to lose. Neither was an option the boy would ever consider. Once Tetsuko was ready, Kenshin jumped back a bit before resuming his attack. Barely giving the girl time to react, Kenshin quickly extended his blade in an outward jabbing motion. "HAYAI EIKYOU!" 速い影響 Several quick yet powerful jabs, aimed at various parts of Tetsuko's sword and upper body. They were even faster than the Hangeki, which was already a rather fast technique. A technique that would give most swordsmen trouble with parrying or blocking due to the sheer speed of the strikes. However, Tetsuko was not most swordsmen. She would undoubtedly find a way to either dodge, parry, or even counterattack. The boy would honestly be more surprised if any of those strikes actually landed without some sort of counter waiting for him. Kenshin was smiling the whole time. This was far too much fun! If this was like their first battle, then he would be starting to pant heavily from exhaustion by now. Although he was certainly no iron wall, and he was definitely getting a bit tired, the boy's stamina was better than it was before. Tetsuko would not need to worry about Kenshin collapsing from exhaustion just yet. The fight was far from over. | Word count: 518

You win battles by knowing the enemy's timing, and using a timing which the enemy does not expect. Such were the words of Musashi Miyamoto, one of history's greatest duelists and fencers. To him, timing was everything, it was the aspect of combat that underpinned every piece of guidance he'd written in his famous Five Books. There were few swordsman that disputed his teachings, Tetsuko herself taking them to heart and holding them close. It was 'timing', after all, that wass key to the immovable nature of Jikishinkage-ryu! Kenshin, however, was no stranger to the importance of timing either. By utilizing that effective and savage counter of his, he'd managed to trade blows with the Shindou girl, by invading her timing with his own unexpected technique. Given the boy's typically stronger focus on offense compared to her, it wasn't too surprising - in hindsight - to find that he had a counter technique that was so straightforward and damaging in nature! The drawback of this clash was that the respective techniques each of them had used were now known to one another. Each of them had know that single 'aspect' of their opponent's 'timing', so using those moves again was going to be much less effective. They had to be on the lookout for other tricks instead, and be ready to use some of their own. Whoever could decipher their opponent's timing first, and kept their own hidden the longest, would surely prove the victor of this clash! Given that each of them were as skilled as they were, however, this was going to be a difficult battle for the both of them. After all, both Kenshin and Tetsuko had a myriad of techniques in thier arsenal, so it was unlikely they'd run out of tricks or ideas anytime soon! That was perhaps one of the most exciting aspects to Tetsuko, as it meant they'd be clashing their respective strongest abilities against one another. In the interest of playing to her own strengths, Tetsuko had tried to transition back into a defensive position just after their traded hits. Jikishinkage-ryu was a counter-focused style, so letting her opponent fall into a position where she could get a good hit wasn't a bad strategy at all. That wasn't to say it was going to be easy, however. Kenshin's offense was blindingly quick, after all, and his next rapid impact would leave Tetsuko little room to breathe. Her sword was brought quickly up to block and deflect his jabs. Each thrust was like a bullet, and the Shindou girl could only barely parry them with her own strong defensive stance. Raised into a high defensive position, it was evident right away how much pressure Kenshin's barrage was putting upon her. This was his specialty, it seemed, this speed and pure force he could come up with... Getting in a counterattack would not be easy, not with how little room Tetsuko was getting to breath. Not only that, but his efficient movements weren't going to eat up as much stamina as her focused deflections, so she couldn't just continue to block them like this... If he was showing the essence of his attack, she'd need to show the essence of her defense. "Ten'i Muhou."Quickly, as one jab came out, Tetsuko shifted her hands. Her forehand would move quickly up, supporting the spine of the blade, before giving a firm and steadfast block to the jab, using both hands to support a harsh deflection! In this stance, it was like she was using her sword as a staff, while showing greater control and a more comprehensive defensive posture that let her weather the rapid attacks! It made any offense more difficult, but if she could force Kenshin to pull out some bigger moves... Well, that would be ideal! For weathering his barrage, even with her new stance, would be quite tiring unless she got herself an opening. words: 000 • tags: you • notes: stuff

Although it felt like the two had been clashing blades for a while now and there seemed to be no end in sight, the fact of the matter was that this was simply not the case. Naturally, the battle could not last forever. While Kenshin had good stamina, it was not boundless. Sooner or later, the boy would tire out. Still, this was a massive improvement compared to last time. It would have been around this time that Kenshin would be at his limit if he was exactly like he was back in that first spar. But tons of training had done much to improve his physical capabilities. So rather than being on the verge of collapsing, Kenshin was only just starting to tire. Still, it did not matter just how tired he was gradually becoming. Kenshin would not allow himself to stop so soon. No, he would continue to push himself, continue fighting despite his slowly increasing exhaustion, and take on Tetsuko with everything he had. As expected, Tetsuko was ready for Kenshin's quick strikes, employing a defensive stance that allowed her to weather the fast strikes with ease. She was like an impregnable iron wall, one that Kenshin was determined to crush. Straight on attacks would not prove to be effective here. No, what he needed was to observe. Find a weak spot if any existed, and break through. All while avoiding easing up on the offensive pressure. If she got even the smallest of openings to take advantage of, Kenshin was not sure that he would be able to drive her attacks off very well, as his defensive maneuvers and stance were not as great as Tetsuko's. With the next blocked attack, Kenshin pulled away a bit and began to swing his wooden sword in a 180 degree arc. "Kaiten Ōda!" 回転殴打 The purpose of this spin slash was to swing with great power and leave the boy in a favorable position regardless of how Tetsuko reacted. If it hit, great. That would certainly leave quite the mark. If she moved out of the way, it would be easy to chain another swing to continue his offensive pressure. And should she decide to block, then Kenshin could push himself back and give himself some space to try to think of what to do next. And should Tetsuko choose to swing back? That was fine, too. Kenshin would be more than happy to have a head-on clash. Though naturally, many plans would seem excellent on paper. In practice was often a different matter entirely. Would Kenshin's attack hit its mark, or otherwise leave him in a favorable position? Or was there something he could not foresee? Something that Tetsuko would capitalize on as she made her move? Regardless, it was clear that while the battle had not yet begun its final phase, the end was drawing ever closer. | Word count: 480

To control one's stamina, one had to control their breathing. That was another facet of Tetsuko's sword style, one aided by the boundless iron flowing in her body. Breathing created energy, life and vigor. It was exactly what the Shindou girl needed to weather the storm of blows Kenshin had sent her way. Her defensive stance gave her good coverage and ease of movement, with the downside of it being tricky to transition into an attack with this particular position. Not that Kenshin was giving her an opening with his rapid barrage, that is. Tetsuko's goal was to force out a chance to counterattack, or, failing that, tire Kenshin out until an opening presented itself. Her steady breathing and unshakable will left her confident in her ability to, at the very least, outlast him. Perhaps Kenshin sensed this too, as his own best play was to find a weakness in Tetsuko's defense and exploit it to render her strategy ineffective. Having anticipated this, Tetsuko was surprised to see the brute strength of a powerful rotating swing coming her way. A simple deflection would not do against the power of a spinning strike. Tetsu presented her blade in a static block, the force striking into her hands as the blade struck hers. It stung like anything, but Tetsuko wasn't going to let an opportunity go to waste. As Kenshin tried to pull back, Tetsuko tightened her sore hands around her sword grip, and lunged forward after him. Keeping her blade pressed against the side of his and sliding along it as she moved both hands down to the handle once again, pulling her blade around within his guard for a wide swing! It was a foreseeable movement, however, so she had to follow up quickly for a more effective attack. Pivoting her hands, she took a one handed grip and swung her sword in a tricky upward arc as she leaned forward, for an odd but dangerous attack! Even now, during the middle stage of the fight, both were still fighting with their all, striving for nothing less than victory against their rival. For there was no better way to temper their blades. words: 000 • tags: you • notes: stuff

By now, most opponents would have been succumbing to exhaustion, if not have been defeated outright. Most opponents would have found it difficult to continue weathering Kenshin's attacks for this long. However, Tetsuko was not most opponents. It was clear that wearing down her defense was its own ordeal. But no matter how tough it would be, Kenshin was determined to find a way to break through it. Even if it meant breaking his sword in the process, though he did hope that it would not have to come down to that. Still, there was a huge worrying fact. The boy was gradually beginning to get more and more tired as time went on. He could still keep on fighting, but not indefinitely. Eventually, he would need to stop to catch his breath. However, Kenshin had a feeling that this was exactly what Tetsuko was waiting for. His barrage of attacks was making it difficult for the girl to go on the offensive, but once he slowed down enough, she would no doubt capitalize on that opening and come at him with a relentless assault. Would he even be able to hold her off if she did? In addition to that, Tetsuko was not an easy opponent to read. She was not an open book by any means. Even without the constant blade clashes, it was difficult to tell if she was tiring as well, and more importantly, by how much. Kenshin already had a feeling that trying to outlast her just wasn't going to work. Despite the boy's best efforts to hide it, his increasingly frequent breathing would not be too difficult for Tetsuko to notice if she were to pay close enough attention. Despite this, that in no way meant that the spar was coming to an end. While it was getting more and more close to that point, Kenshin was not done yet. His body may be starting to slowly feel fatigued, but his spirit continued to shine brightly. He was not about to make it easy for Tetsuko to turn the tables on him. His determination made itself very clear through the boy's actions as he continued to put on the offensive pressure on Tetsuko. You're strong, but not invincible. Somehow, I'll find the weak point in your defense. I'll crush you, even if I get crushed in the process!Of course, Tetsuko was not going to make things easy for Kenshin. Just as he was trying to pull back after his Kaiten Ōda was blocked, she was already after him. Coming in with a swing, Kenshin was just barely able to parry the move. But Tetsuko's follow up to that proved to be too quick, bypassing the boy's defense and striking him. However, Kenshin was not one to just stand there and take such a blow. As he began to grit his teeth in pain, he immediately made a two-handed horizontal swing at Tetsuko, hoping that he was fast enough to strike her before she could block the surprise attack. Meanwhile, the rest of the dojo was silent. Everyone was silently watching this intense showdown. Shien smiled approvingly as he watched the two continue the fight. It was clear that neither one was about to back down. The old swordmaster was pleased to see that both of them were giving it their all. But who would fall first? Who would be the one to ultimately claim victory? It was far too soon to tell, and quite honestly, even Shien was unsure. It was really anyone's guess. But one thing was for certain. Both Kenshin and Tetsuko were commendable. Regardless of the battle's outcome, both were highly skilled with the blade. The two would go far as long as they continued to hone their skills. Shien was sure of that. | Word count: 634

Tetsuko prided herself on being sturdy and unyielding like a mountain, however, even she had her limits. Kenshin's barrage still took a lot out of her, and she knew that this fight could not carry on indefinitely. Although they weren't on their last legs yet by any means, dragging things out too much would just leave her more likely to make a mistake. If she made a mistake, then Kenshin would surely capitalize on it. In a fight like this, with such a skilled opponent, she was fully aware her errors would be used against her if she wasn't extremely careful and wary. His offensive style necessitated that carefulness, and a flexibility that would allow her to try avoid being completely overwhelmed by the onslaught. The constant clashing of their blades would end up in his favor if she didn't strike back eventually; and his own powerful spinning attack gave her the chance to do just that. Her hands were raw from the static block she'd given, but she wasn't going to let any opportunity pass her by by. Coming after him with a chasing slash, she managed to strike him somewhat cleanly. Receiveand counter, one of the essences of her art, and how she'd fell this mighty opponent! However, Tetsuko knew she couldn't let herself get too carried away. Kenshin wasn't going down anytime soon, and she couldn't let herself get cocky just because she got a good hit in. As the old master watched overhead, their fight continued, neither one of them nearly close to being about to yield. Whoever fell first didn't even seem to matter at this point; they were both simply pitting their all against one another, to see whose strongest came out on top! As the Shindou girl pivoted for a counter swing, she quickly found herself in a predicament, having underestimated Kenshin's own recovery speed as he unleashed a powerful horizontal swing! Gasping lightly, she had to redirect her approach, raising her body a bit and moving her arm to redirect the attack slightly, but ultimately copping the blow right on the shoulder, causing her to grunt in pain. Like Kenshin, however, she wasn't going to just let a hit go unpunished. With her sword clashed against his, having redirected his blow into her shoulder, one of her arms was growing sore and less effective... But the other was still free. In a surprise attack, one spurred by the instinct of a technique she normally used when fully armed, Tetsuko would lunge her free hand at Kenshin's chest with a sudden palm strike! She wasn't terribly strong, so the blow wouldn't deal much damage, but it would hopefully knock him off balance a bit, as she spun on the spot, twirling her blade into back hand grip and thrusting it right at Kenshin's core as a follow-up to the palm strike. "TATSUMON!'She exclaimed, her body pivoting and hips twisting into the reverse-grip thrust, aiming to force him back and give herself some breathing room once again, hopefully having landed another decent hit... However, she doubted it would be so easy! words: 000 • tags: you • notes: stuff

Kenshin was finding it more and more difficult to hide his excitement. Despite the end of the match approaching, despite the point of exhaustion coming closer and closer, despite his attacks not being as quick and fierce as they were earlier, and despite his movements and reaction time not being as swift as they were at the beginning of the match, Kenshin was having the time of his life. He was giving it his all, and in an intense clash of blades where his frighteningly skilled opponent was doing the same, he would not have it any other way. An all out fight until only one swordsman was left standing. One that pushed both warriors to their absolute limit. What could be more exciting than that? Well, coming out on top, of course! Though even if the boy failed to do that, he could not complain. Still, Kenshin refused to listen to the cries of the aches and pains of his body from having fought so hard for so long. He refused to let up now! Remaining as focused and determined as ever, Kenshin continued to try to find a way to take Tetsuko down. To try to predict her movements and act accordingly. To make such a seemingly impossible task not only possible, but a certainty. But would he pull it off? Well there was only one way to find out! But of course, Tetsuko was anything but predictable. The surprise palm strike seemed to come from out of nowhere. Not only was the boy too slow to prevent himself from being pushed back and almost knocked off balance, but then Tetsuko quickly followed up with a quick thrust. Shit! Kenshin would have had trouble with blocking such a move if he wasn't fatigued, but with how tired he was now, it seemed that blocking or parrying just wasn't going to happen. Another clean hit. But of course, Kenshin was not going to go down from that! Tetsuko may have pushed him back to create some distance, but Kenshin would not let her enjoy that brief reprieve for too long. After a short moment to catch his breath, the boy was already back on the offensive. Letting Tetsuko have even a moment to follow up with another attack was simply foolish. So Kenshin unleashed his quickest strike, a technique even faster than Hayai Eikyō, which was already very fast to begin with. "Kōsoku Ken!" 光速剣 This technique may have been even faster than Hayai Eikyō, and thus a bit harder for Tetsuko to respond to, but that was not the only difference. First, this was a single focused jab, rather than a flurry of several powerful techniques all in a short span of time. Second, speed was the main focus for this move, which meant that a bit of power would be sacrificed. Assuming that Tetsuko was not able to react in time (though it would be difficult to avoid or block, it was by no means an impossible feat for her), it would not hit her nearly as hard as Kenshin's earlier attacks. The point was not to damage, but to try to throw her off-guard and dispel any belief that the boy's increasing exhaustion meant that he would now be too slow and thus easy to read. Of course, such a technique would not be effective for long. Tetsuko would most likely already be readying her next move. Kenshin quickly shifted to a more defensive stance, readying himself for whatever Tetsuko would throw at him next. Meanwhile, Shien continued watching intently. He could already see the signs of fatigue from Kenshin, despite the boy's best attempt to hide it. It was clear that the battle would soon reach its conclusion. But would Tetsuko crush the boy? Would Kenshin be able to push past his fatigue and overwhelm Tetsuko with his determination? Or would the two be evenly matched, with neither being able to remain standing while the other fell? It was anyone's guess. | Word count: 666
